Everyday Beauty’s Slimmm Weight Loss Challenge I

n the spirit of our commitment to health, happiness and selfimprovement, our goal with this challenge was to encourage moderate, steady weight loss. It’s well documented that crash and fad diets don’t work long-term and are incredibly unhealthy, so we steered clear of that route – and we recommend you do too. We got Slimmm on board (check them out at www.slimmm.com.au) because their weight management program is sensible and caters to busy, modern people who want to be healthy and feel good but may need a little support getting there.

The program is convenient and easy to follow – for six days a week, replace two meals with one of their nutritionally complete and balanced shakes or bars and eat one regular healthy meal as well as snacks. Slimmm products are designed to increase your protein intake while limiting calories and empty carbs. Once a week is a ‘breakout’ day to satisfy cravings.

Total % body weight lost: 5.1 % Interests and hobbies: I collect wine, manage an under-17 soccer team, and love sports, travelling and going out to dinner. Why he took the challenge: It was great timing. This weight loss is five years in the making. I lost approximately 35 kg about 4–5 years ago when my doctor told me that I needed to take better care of myself. He warned me that I might have to go on diabetes medication. That woke me up. I lost all the weight quickly, but I’ve since put some of it back on. Because the Slimmm program isn’t drastic or extreme (I’ve tried those diets in the past – they don’t work) and you’re allowed a normal meal every day, I thought it might really help me. Motivation: I’ve learned that you need to be in the right frame of mind for weight loss. Since I find it really easy to put on weight and harder to lose it, I just tell myself that it isn’t worth it not to keep on the right track.

as mentor – encouraging, supporting and motivating them through their highs and lows. And, we’re happy to report, the challenge was an all-round success! [Editor’s note: Alicia lost 4.4 kg whilst joining the contestants on their Slimmm journey.]

Our four contestants who undertook this 10-week challenge – Joe, Bianca, Bruno and Sara – each have very different stories and weight loss goals. Our editor, Alicia, joined the foursome acting

Favourite Slimmm products: Definitely the shakes, but I really like all the products – they taste great and are easy to consume. I’d recommend them to anyone thinking of losing weight. Exercise: Brisk walking. I tend to speed up on hills to get my heart rate up. Sometimes I alternate 2–3 minutes of walking with jogging too. Best thing about losing weight: Improved confidence and selfesteem, especially when looking in the mirror. On the results: I’m happy overall, but I feel like I could have done better. I probably took too many cheat days and I know I didn’t walk enough, but that’s life. With daily stresses and an active social life, I’m not going to be perfect all the time. I’m medically healthy and losing weight steadily and that’s the most important thing. Wise words: If you’re serious about weight loss, a program like Slimmm can be a great help, but balance and greater lifestyle changes are key factors.

THE BIGGEST LOSER Joe, 45, 179 cm Works in the Food Industry

Total lost

10.6kg

Total % body weight lost: 9.2 % Interests and hobbies: I’m a sports guy and family man. I love footy and watching my lads play soccer. I also really like long walks and family outings. I work in the food industry, so naturally I have a passion for good food. Why he took the challenge: I’ve struggled with my weight for the past 30 years. I’ve also had a number of health issues. Diabetes runs in my family and I’ve witnessed the pain it can cause, so I need to get healthy. I’ve tried every fad diet in the book – each time I’ve lost weight and put it right back on. I still have quite a bit of weight to lose, but this diet is sensible and suits my goals. Motivation: When I’m feeling down, I tell myself, “You’ve been doing so well – don’t stop now!” Also, if I have a bad day and binge on comfort food, I pull myself together and psych myself up to be extra good for the next while. Diet ‘kryptonite’: Savoury foods such as chips and pasties. Favourite healthy meal: Grilled fish and vegetable soups. Losing weight has opened up a whole new world of food for me. Favourite Slimmm products: The Breakfast, Chocolate Meal Replacement and Mini-Snack bars – though I don’t dislike any of the products. They’re all filling and tasty. Exercise routine: Walking briskly 1–2 times a day with my music. I look forward to it every day. I can’t wait to start lifting weights once my liver is better and my doctor gives me the all-clear.

BEFORE: 115.7 kg AFTER: 105.1 kg Best thing about losing weight: When people I haven’t seen in a while tell me how great I look! Also, being healthy, feeling better, and being able to run around and play with my young son more. On the results: I’m very happy. I’ve achieved my goals. Of course I would have liked to lose more, but from what I’ve studied, dropping too much weight too fast makes you put even more back on. My blood pressure and cholesterol are the lowest they’ve been in a long time. I’m healing and feeling better and better each day. This challenge has been hugely beneficial to me. Looking forward: I look forward to upping my exercise when I get medical clearance – and I plan to keep watching what I eat and using Slimmm products. I’m happy and progressing at a really good rate and I’m absolutely confident I’ll reach my goal weight. Also, I need to continue to be honest with myself – the weeks I try harder, I do better, and the weeks I do better, I’m happier. There isn’t anything that will stop me now! Where there’s a will, there’s a way: Programs like Slimmm are a great help, but it’s important to understand that losing weight requires a lifestyle change. There are no quick fixes – you have to go through some tough times to succeed (especially if you’re an emotional eater like I am). It takes commitment and willpower – your mindset needs to be right. But if you really, really want it, you’ll make it happen.

Did you know? P op culture affects eating habits: After the Popeye comic strip launched in 1931, spinach consumption went up by 33% in the US.

WANT TO FINALLY “IGET STABILISED INTO

A HEALTHY LIFESTYLE.

Interests and hobbies: Socialising with friends, shopping and travelling.

Why she took the challenge: My BEFORE: 73.6 kg weight is always fluctuating and has been for AFTER: 67.2 kg a long time. I want to finally get stabilised into a healthy lifestyle. Also, I’m getting married in two months, so naturally I want to look my absolute best. This looked like just what I needed to kick-start myself into long-term healthy eating. Also, the fact that it was a public challenge was a huge motivator. I figured it would keep me in line. Motivation: If I’m having a tough day, I find that distraction always works. My partner helps with that – he’s really supportive. Diet ‘kryptonite’: I have a sweet tooth. I tend to go for chocolate and carbs. Favourite healthy meal: Grilled chicken or fish with salad or veggies. Favourite Slimmm products: I really enjoy the Breakfast and Coconut Delight bars and the Vanilla Bean Shake. Exercise routine: Listening to music on the treadmill. I actually love going to the gym – I wish I had the time to go more often. Best thing about losing weight: Just feeling healthy and good about myself. I also love when people I haven’t seen in ages compliment me about how I look! Also, my clothes are fitting looser and I’ve had to have my wedding dress taken in a few times – that’s a great feeling.

On the results: I’m happy. I would’ve loved to have lost even more weight, but I’m on the right track. It’s been stressful as I’ve been swamped with long hours at work, social events and wedding planning. Also, though I like the Slimmm products, it takes a lot of willpower and dedication to follow the same food plan for 10 weeks.

WAS DEFINITELY “ITTOUGH, BUT I’M PROUD OF MYSELF FOR STICKING TO THE PROGRAM THE ENTIRE TIME. I DIDN’T STRAY ONCE.

Looking forward: I plan to keep going with this diet and an exercise plan until my wedding, at least. I’d like to lose a few more kilos by then and I think I now have the foundation and momentum built up to do so successfully. But, overall, I want to maintain a healthy diet – I think this program has started me off really well. I’ve learnt to make better food decisions. Sage advice: If I have a strong craving – chocolate, for instance – I’ll allow myself a little bit to refrain from binging. I find that if you deny yourself too much, it eventually backfires.

Tasty bars, creamy shakes and savoury soups – the Slimmm range has something for everyone. Did you know? Some cravings for non-nutritive substances such as paint, plaster, rocks, and dirt may be a sign of a mineral deficiency.

BEFORE: 93.8 kg AFTER 89.6 kg

Interests and hobbies: I collect World War I and II memorabilia. I’m also into tattoo culture – I hang out with tattoo groups and help out with design. Why she took the challenge: I had lost 45 kg on a severe caloriecontrolled diet (only 830 calories a day) starting about five years ago. I lost most of my weight early on and then hit a plateau. I was having trouble losing those last few kilo’s, to get down to my ideal healthy weight range.

days

weekly program 6 day supply with 1 day break

I thought a different approach to dieting might work. With the Slimmm program, you eat more often and significantly more calories – I was correct in thinking that it might boost my metabolism. Diet ‘kryptonite’: Icing – just icing for some reason. Favourite healthy meal: Steamed salmon broken up into pieces with veggies and soy sauce. Favourite Slimmm products: The Breakfast and Coconut Delight bars, and the Banana Shake. The snack bars really help curb sugar cravings. Exercise routine: Spin class and weights about four times a week.

On the results: I would love to have reached my goal of 85 kg, but I’m happy. The past 10 weeks were a bit of an emotional rollercoaster – my energy was up and down. Getting used to a diet so different from my last one was tough and my body struggled. But I did lose weight and I’m definitely looking better. Lessons learned: Because I’m a competitive person, I pushed myself a little too far sometimes, which left me tired and led to me getting sick. It’s important to pace yourself. Looking forward: I’m happy to be down in the 80s (finally!), but I certainly want to keep losing weight. And no matter what, I always feel better when I know I’ve done the best I can do. Wise words: With Slimmm, and any other program, you have to tailor it to your needs. I’m six feet tall and active – I need more calories than a smaller, less active person does. Remember to listen to your body.

T

here’s been a lot of talk about this topic lately – from the media coverage to the noticeable increase of ‘gluten intolerant’ people to the influx of glutenfree food brands in the shops. This has led to a lot of misinformation and confusion about the true nature of this very real and increasingly common condition. We break down the facts from the fiction below.

the lowdown on gluten intolerance

Myth: ‘Gluten-free’ is a just a diet fad. THE REALITY: Though some people may avoid carb-heavy, glutenladen foods to lose weight, make no mistake: Gluten intolerance is very real. At least 7 % of Australians have some form of the condition. So why are we just hearing about this all of a sudden? Apparently it’s just been mis- and underdiagnosed for many years. Also, studies show that incidences of gluten intolerance have increased drastically over the past 50 years – possibly due to changes in diet and farming practices.

Myth: Gluten is unhealthy. THE REALITY: Gluten is actually a protein found mainly in wheat, barley and rye. It’s harmless to most people. For those who suffer from a gluten allergy however, it can cause a lot of suffering – namely headaches, nausea, dizziness, lethargy, bone and joint pain, bloating, cognitive difficulties, vomiting, constipation abdominal pain, diarrhea and/or anaemia. For people with Coeliac disease (about 1 % of Australians) gluten is literally poisonous and can cause severe and permanent damage to their entire bodies. Gluten damages the small intestine, causing a mal-absorption of vital nutrients and severe illness. Over time, this can lead to dangerous vitamin and mineral deficiencies, and eventually, organ failure. Sufferers of this autoimmune disorder must keep a strict glutenfree diet for their entire lives.

Myth: ‘Coeliac disease’ and ‘gluten intolerant’ are the same thing. THE REALITY: Until recently the terms were used interchangeably. Though the research is still emerging and the causes of gluten intolerance are not yet fully understood, we now understand that there are in fact, varying degrees of the condition. It’s clear that some people can eat gluten and experience only mild or moderate symptoms. Those with only a minor sensitivity may choose to just enjoy gluten in moderation – much like someone with lactose intolerance may indulge in the occasional piece of chocolate. Also, unlike Celiac disease, gluten intolerance is usually only temporary. More often than not, gluten can be successfully re-introduced into the diet after a period of time.

Myth: Gluten-free diets are boring. THE REALITY: Sure, eating out can be a hassle and you’ll become religious about checking labels, but there’s still a world of healthy and delicious options out there. Keep eating fresh fruit, vegetables, meats, eggs, nuts, dairy, legumes and rice. Experiment in cooking with gluten-free flours (rice, corn, potato or bean) and nutrition-rich grains such as quinoa, millet and sorghum. Keep in mind, fast food chains, restaurants and supermarkets are catering to you more and more, with tasty gluten-free alternatives. Think you might be gluten intolerant? Book an appointment with your GP today.

SWEET DREAMS TECHNIQUES FOR BETTER SLEEP

A

ll too often, sleep is underrated – which is unfortunate because sleep deprivation causes havoc to your memory, ability to think clearly, attention span and mood. It can even aggravate or cause minor depression. Insufficient sleep also carries health risks such as elevated heart rate and blood pressure, impaired glucose tolerance (raising your risk of developing diabetes) and increased appetite, leading to weight gain. The amount of sleep we need varies from person to person, but it’s usually around seven or eight hours a night. Here are some tips to get your mind and body sleep ready: » DON’T GET HOOKED ON SLEEPING PILLS. More and more studies show how problematic they can be when taken too often. » EAT A HEALTHY, BALANCED DIET and make sure you’re not deficient in any vitamins or minerals – especially B12 and folic acid. You can always try supplements such as Bio-Organics Vitamin B Complex with Rhodiola. Just make sure not to take Vitamin B before bed – it tends to keep people awake. » EXERCISE and spend time outdoors each day so that you’re physically as well as mentally tired at night. » RESEARCH RELAXATION TECHNIQUES. Yoga, breathing exercises and meditation are all great options. » KEEP YOUR BED FOR SLEEP ONLY, or if you have a significant other, ‘bonding time’. You’ll condition your mind to associate bed with only those things and fall asleep

faster – so refrain from working, watching TV or using your computer in bed. » WIND DOWN BEFORE BED. Read a good book, watch some light-hearted TV or listen to soothing music. » PRIME YOUR BEDROOM. Use clean, cosy bedding and a supportive pillow and mattress that are good for your neck and back. Make sure your room is dark, quiet and full of fresh air. » SET YOUR BODY CLOCK. Try to go to bed and wake up at roughly the same times each day. » TAKE A RELAXING BATH OR SHOWER. The warm water helps relax your muscles and clear your mind. Also, the sound of running water is proven to be pleasant and calming. » HAVE SOME CHAMOMILE TEA. Herbal teas can have real soothing effects – just make sure it’s caffeine-free!

» DEAL WITH IT IN THE MORNING. If you’re quarrelling with someone or trying to solve a problem and it’s getting late, put it on the backburner and deal with it when you’re rested. » TRY AROMATHERAPY. Lemon and lavender essential oils in particular are known to relieve stress and promote relaxation. Give Bosisto’s Lavender Oil a try. » USE NATURAL REMEDIES WITH CARE. Valerian root, melatonin supplements, hops and passion flower are all known sleep aids and can be effective. You can try Nature’s Own Complete Sleep Advanced or Blackmores Valerian Forte. Just be sure you’re aware of any possible side effects. Note: See your doctor if you suspect that you’re suffering from clinical insomnia or that your sleep issues are due to another medical condition.

Did you know? I t’s impossible to tell if someone is really awake without close medical inspection. People can take cat naps with their eyes open without even being aware of it.

veryday Beauty met with Angela, 50, to discuss her experience with menopause. A mother of two, she loves her retail job at a kids’ clothing store, has a great relationship with her grown-up daughters, and enjoys a good gin and tonic with her husband and friends. How, and when, did you realise that you were beginning to go through menopause?

It started with hot flushes and night sweats disrupting my sleep – pretty typical menopause signs. I also noticed that I’d gained a bit of weight around my middle and started feeling bloated. My periods became irregular and infrequent, my breasts were very swollen and sore, my joints ached and my skin and hair got very dry. I started having more difficulty concentrating on day-to-day things, feeling nauseous a lot and getting headaches all the time. In terms of my emotional state, I became very moody and irritable – I’d sometimes burst into tears for no reason. I just felt ‘off’.

Lots of women use hormone therapy or take medications or supplements to deal with symptoms. How do you cope? Yes, many do, and I’ve seen how effective they can be for some women. My cousin, for example, swears by topical hormone creams. I actually don’t take any supplements or medications myself – mostly because I don’t feel like I need them. Also, my symptoms have eased up a lot since they started. I find that exercise really helps me cope. I try to get out for long walks at least three to four times a week. I also try to watch my diet and eat healthily because it makes me feel a lot better – and I’ve found that I put on weight more quickly now. I don’t smoke at all and I try to only have the occasional drink, which likely makes things easier.

No two women are “the same. Each will

I was fairly certain what was happening and I got it confirmed by my doctor with a blood test about a year ago.

Did you know? Women tend to have fewer problems associated with menopause in cultures where aging is viewed as a positive experience.

everydayhealth 13 woman. But I find that the best thing I can do is keep busy and get on with my routine without focussing on it too much. I treat it as just a part of day-to-day living.

Well, that makes sense. Menopause is a natural biological process, not a medical illness, after all. But many women have a really tough time with it. Yes, exactly! Menopause is natural, but it can also be extremely tough. I certainly don’t think a woman should hesitate to seek treatment if her symptoms are severe. It’s a lot like pregnancy in that way. Now that I think of it, I dealt with pregnancy much as I’m dealing with menopause with my “just get on with it” mantra – I kept going to work (against my boss’s urging) until about three days before I gave birth to my second child! I realise I was lucky to have such easy pregnancies. I was also a young mum, which, of course, helped.

Basically, no two women are the same. Each will experience this stage of her life in her own way.

What’s your advice to women who may be struggling (either emotionally or physically) with menopause? I would tell them that I get it – I often wish I could feel like my normal self again. But I try to remind myself that this is a natural part of life. And look at it this way, once it’s over, you’ll never have to get your period again! Also, I urge every woman out there to look into her options and educate herself about menopause as much as possible. Read different sources, talk to your friends, female relatives and your doctor. It’s recommended that menopausal women schedule regular check-ups, so make sure you have a doctor you trust. He or she will be able to talk you through the many treatment options available from lifestyle adjustments

Saving Your Skin

Over-the-counter solutions that do more than scratch the surface. Common Rashes

Fungal Infections

Unless part of an infectious disease (ie. chickenpox or herpes), most rashes are neither dangerous nor contagious. Caused by allergies, heat, harsh products or viruses, they usually get better on their own. In the meantime, try to treat the symptoms.

Scaly patches of skin can be caused by a fungal infection such as athlete’s foot or jock itch. Contrary to popular belief, fungal infections aren’t caused by poor hygiene, passed on by animals or easily picked up in gyms, pools or changing rooms. They’re also not especially contagious.

Among many effective anti-itch products (from ointments to tablets), the DermaVeen range is a great bet – keep some on hand in case a rash pops up. Antihistamines are also useful to reduce swelling and inflammation. And remember to moisturise – try a hypoallergenic, fragrance-free brand like Alpha Keri. Lanolinrich, it relieves dry, itchy skin and provides a crucial hydrating barrier.

Dermatitis/Eczema* This family of recurring skin conditions is distinguished by patches of extremely dry, itchy skin caused by allergies, genetic factors, irritants or a number of health conditions. Treatment typically involves removing the cause (when possible) and a slathering of over-thecounter 1 % hydrocortisone cream (try Dermaid, Egoderm or Cetaphil Restoraderm). *See opposite page for some eczema treatment options.

Treatment is simple. Check out Hydrozole, Solveasy or Pinetarsol. For infected nails, try Loceryl or Canesten Fungal Nail Treatment. If you don’t see improvement after a few days, a fungal infection may not be the culprit, but rather a form of dermatitis. This is a common mistake because they look alike.

Minor Burns For non-blistering surface burns, run cold water over the affected area for at least 20 minutes. Then apply Solosite or Solugel liberally to keep it cool, moist and protected. Lastly, place a non-stick pad (such as Melolin) on the area and secure it with a bandage. For sunburns, Soov Spray cools the skin and numbs the pain.

QV Flare Up Bath Oil relieves symptoms of dermatitis and eczema by both moisturising and reducing harmful bacteria on the skin.

RED ALERT! While most skin conditions aren’t cause for worry, particularly when they go away quickly, there are many different kinds of rashes and infections not covered in this article. Some may require prescription medication. If a rash spreads or lasts more than a week, if the pain is unbearable, or if you just want to play it safe, get to a doctor ASAP.

your ASK Pharmacist I’ve been dealing with eczema since I was a teenager and I’ve always been prescribed corticosteroid cream to combat breakouts. However, the cream appears to have bleached my skin in some areas. How can I relieve my eczema without damaging my skin? For those lucky enough not to know, eczema is a common condition characterised by recurring skin rashes, usually localised on the lower limbs, hands and feet. The rashes aren’t contagious. Rather, they’re triggered by environmental irritants – jewellery, detergents, animal hair and various chemicals – or even stress and changes in the weather. Eczema can be quite painful too, with symptoms ranging from extreme dryness, redness, itchiness and swelling to blistering, crackling, oozing and even bleeding. The first step in treating eczema is to identify the cause and, when possible, remove it immediately. Consider swapping any detergentbased soaps and shampoos for pH-balanced varieties. Toss out any products that are harsh on your skin. Next, moisturise the skin, relieve the itch and stop the inflammation. Corticosteroids are commonly prescribed because they are fast-acting and very effective. However, use them sparingly and for short periods of time because, as you’ve mentioned, they do have side effects – notably thinning of the skin, stretch marks and blotching. But don’t despair – there are several ways to ease your eczema. After showering, apply a thick, rich, fragrance- and preservative-free moisturiser (such

as Dermeze Ointment) twice a day. If you have time, take a relaxing and luxurious bath with QV Flare Up Bath Oil – an excellent extramoisturising product. To combat itching and inflammation, oral antihistamines (try Phenergan or Telfast) can be quite effective. Tar-based products (check out Ego Pinetarsol) are fantastic too. Potassium permanganate (ie. Condy’s Crystals) can help if the eczema is oozing. Natural vitamin supplements such as primrose oil or oral fish oil tablets can ease symptoms. You can even break open Vitamin E capsules and apply the oil directly onto your skin. Lastly, control your environment. Avoid all temperature extremes, harsh indoor heating or airconditioning, and showering in toohot water. Keep your nails short (to keep from scratching), wear cotton clothing (wool and other fibres can be irritating), use fragrance-free detergent, and apply a barrier cream and wear gloves when washing or handling chemicals. As with so many other afflictions, it also helps to manage stress with relaxation techniques. (See ‘Sweet Dreams’ on page 11 for tips.)

I’ve been getting bad chest pains recently and it’s starting to worry me. Every few days I get this tight, stabbing pain that lasts a few minutes. What’s going on? Sounds like angina, a common symptom of coronary artery disease. The pain can manifest itself in the chest, shoulders, arms, neck or jaw. Briefly, angina occurs when there’s a build-up of fatty deposits in the heart’s arteries. When blocked, these arteries temporarily become narrow and less blood flows to the heart. Angina can come on at any time (including while you sleep), but common triggers include exercise, anger, stress, excitement, or even a heavy meal. Left untreated, angina can lead to a heart attack, so get to a doctor ASAP for a proper diagnosis. The standard prescription is for nitrate medicine (tablets or oral spray), which quickly relaxes the blood vessels, enabling blood to flow to the heart more rapidly. Your best bet? Keep your heart healthy. Reduce your intake of animal fats, cholesterol and salt while increasing your intake of fruit, vegetables and wholegrain cereals. Also check your blood pressure regularly, exercise often, maintain a healthy body weight, and of course, refrain from smoking.

Beautiful Every body is

W

e believe that every woman can and should feel happy and beautiful in her skin – on her wedding day or any other day. Unfortunately, many of us are incredibly hard on ourselves far too much of the time – critiquing perceived imperfections, comparing our features to other people’s, getting frustrated in fitting rooms...

These gorgeous brides – three distinctly different looking women – look as magnificent as can be in their exquisite gowns. High-end fashion designers Liz and Shirley of couture bridal boutique Eliza French are experts at catering to any body type or personal style. Here they explain why these dresses (each an original creation) work for each bride’s body.

Enough! It’s time to celebrate the specific and uniquely beautiful gifts you have – and in your own personal way.

Sylvia Body shape: Petite On deciding on the dress: It didn’t take long at all. Eliza French are very talented dress designers, and I had a basic idea of what I wanted already. We came up with my dream wedding dress together. On how her dress felt on her wedding day: It was really heavy (10 kg) as there was so, so much fabric! However, it was comfortable most of the day – though I did remove my extremely heavy veil after the photos. On the importance of the ‘right’ dress: It’s relatively important but not the be-all and end-all. I think all brides look beautiful on their wedding day no matter what dress they choose. On hair, makeup and accessories: Since my sister is a makeup artist, hair stylist and very creative, I pretty much left that up to her once she knew what my dress would look like. I matched my jewellery with the beading and lacework on my gown, though I didn’t wear much as there was already so much detail. Eliza French: “As a petite girl, Sylvia needed a dress that didn’t overpower her frame. Lots of soft tulle cut in shapes gives it softness without bulk. And her bodice is completely handmade with French lace.”

Did you know? I t was custom in ancient Europe for drunk wedding guests to tear off parts of the bride’s gown for good luck. The tradition of throwing the bouquet and garter began as a diversion tactic if things got too unruly.

everydaybride 19

Christina Body shape: Curvaceous On deciding on the dress: I always knew I wanted to get one made. I wanted something different, something never seen before, and I knew the best people for the job would be the girls at Eliza French. I looked around and tried on different styles so I’d know what would suit me, and after a few appointments with Liz, she had designed the perfect dress. On how she felt in it on her wedding day: Very glamorous – as if the dress and I were meant to be. On the importance of the ‘right’ dress: The ‘right’ dress is pretty much everything to a girl who has hoped for this day since she can remember. On hair, makeup and accessories: My hair was put into a soft up-do and topped with a headpiece that matched my dress pattern. I left my makeup to a makeup artist who knew what I did and didn’t like, and accessories were kept to a minimum as the gown itself was made to shine. Eliza French: “The centre panel gives the illusion that she’s taller, while the tulle gives her the fairytale princess style she was looking for.”

Christine Body shape: Tall, slender, smaller upper-body On deciding on the dress: Because I’m so indecisive, I found it extremely difficult to finally decide on a style. I would literally take stacks of pictures to Eliza French and we worked for hours to find one that worked. Four months before the wedding I was still changing my mind! On how she felt in it on her wedding day: I remember waking up in the morning and just automatically smiling from ear to ear. I felt beautiful and glamorous all day. On the importance of the ‘right’ dress: It was extremely important to me. If you don’t feel beautiful in your dress, you won’t have a good day. On hair, makeup and accessories: I always knew I was going to have my hair both up and a feature part of my overall look. I wanted dramatic makeup – I went for darker shades which I feel suit my dark features. I don’t particularly like necklaces with wedding dresses, so I kept it simple with just earrings. Eliza French: “Christine wanted a ‘statement gown’. We used 185m of fabric to create the skirt. The embellished bodice with the wooden feature on the front is all hand-worked. The fishtail skirt is ideal for a tall girl.”

Did you know? D uring the late 19th century, voluptuous women (such as those painted by Raphael and Renoir) were considered the most attractive.

20 everydaybride

For wedding dress style advice to suit your body, check out these tips from Eliza French: Larger than average bust? Try a V or princess neckline. Smaller than average bust? Try a bodice with moulded bra cups to enhance the bustline. Wider shoulders than hips? Balance your hips with a skirt that has a defined waist and avoid embellishment at the shoulders. Wider hips than shoulders? Try a fuller skirt and an empire or A-line cut. Want to create a waist on a wider middle-section? A well-fitting corset undergarment and a low-cut or sweetheart neckline will elongate your neck and accentuate your bust. A fitted or drop-waist will lengthen your torso and slim you right out. A bigger, voluptuous frame? Try an empire dress with a skirt that begins just under the bust and flows.

Quiz:

What’s Your Body Shape?

Hourglass? A strapless or halter-neck with a fitted body will flatter your curves perfectly. Petite? Low-cut or sweetheart necklines will elongate your neck and accentuate your bust. A fitted or dropwaist will lengthen your torso, slim your line and make you feel absolutely fabulous. Very tall? A sheath gown that’s fitted top-to-bottom will look very elegant and glamorous. A belt can break up height but stay away from high necklines and sleeves. Want to create curves? A-line, empire waists and drop waists will soften your form, lengthen your posture and add volume to your behind. Also, a cinched-in waistline on a dress worn with a bodice will help you to achieve that hourglass look.

Mostly Ds Hourglass-shaped. Your hips and shoulders are almost equal size and you have a noticeably narrow waist. Hourglasses are quite curvy and tend to have fuller busts. Fitted clothes that emphasise your waist are best. Note: Each body shape has varying degrees – you might be slightly, moderately or very A-shaped, for example. eing a bride in the 21st Century can and should be a pretty wonderful experience. You can marry whoever you like, plan your wedding however you like and, certainly, wear whatever you like. Brides’ choices are as vast and varied as womanhood itself. That’s why the ideal bride is a happy bride, true to her values, her unique personality and her special sense of style. For your inspiration, we’ve put together three popular bridal looks you can make your own.

Dress by Eliza French. See page 18 for tips on picking your perfect gown.

Vintage Bride Romantic, theatrical and ultra-feminine Apply Schwarzkopf Extra Care Curl Flex Crème to towel-dried hair and blow dry upside down. Next, create loose curls with a mediumbarreled curling iron. Then loosely pull all your hair back, securing it at the nape of the neck with pins and a light mist of hairspray.

PRO TIP: The key to this hairstyle is to not fuss with it too much.

Schwarzkopf Extra Care Curl Flex Crème

THE FACE

THE EYES

For this elegant look, it’s important to start with a perfect, even-toned complexion. Smooth out any problem areas with concealer and finish with a matte powder matching your skin tone.

Apply some rosy or pearltinted shadow at the brow line and the inner corners of the eyes. Don’t go too heavy on the shadow and keep it neutral – taupes, subtle pinks or brown palettes work well. Next, apply some black liner in a cat’s-eye shape with subtle up-sweep at the outer corners of the eyes. Finish with some natural looking false lashes and a few coats of black mascara.

PRO TIP: sweep a little pink blush or some sheer illuminator on your cheekbones to catch the light and make your skin glow.

Keep your makeup light for a fresh, naturally sun-kissed look. Apply a shimmering liquid primer to keep makeup in place. Next, dot bright concealer under the eyes and sparingly where it’s needed before applying a light coat of liquid foundation. Dust bronzer and blend highlighting cream on the cheekbones and anywhere sun will naturally hit. Finish with a few brushes of pink or coral blush.

Your goal: soft and pretty. Dust a shimmery pale base all over the lid, inner corners and brow bone. Fill in the crease and lower lid with some matte brown powder. With a brown pencil, line both upper and lower lash-line. Smudge with your fingers and add some more brown shadow, blending everything together in a natural-looking way. Finish with some false lashes and a few coats of mascara.

Dramatic, sophisticated and stunning Pull your hair into a tight ponytail at the crown and tease it thoroughly with a comb to add volume. PRO TIP: Make sure your hair is smooth and glossy before styling.

Set a flawless base with concealer and a smooth, cream matte finish. Next, create contours along your cheekbones with a dusting of bronzer. When you’re satisfied, blend some highlighting cream on your cheekbones, brow bone and inner eyes. Finally, sweep on some pink blush.

THE EYES Dramatic, smokey eyes are the focus of your look. Prep your lids with a primer to keep shadow in place. Next, pair a light base colour (creamy, shimmery shades work best) with a rich, dark, ‘smokey’ colour (blacks, brown and greys are most common, but you can use jewel tones too). With a pencil in your chosen dark colour, line your upper and lower lashes making sure it’s thicker on top. Next, blend in your light base colour from lids to brow bone. Then, blend in the dark shadow from the lash line to the crease. Apply some liquid black liner, put on some false, curled lashes and finish with several coats of black mascara. PRO TIP: The key with this look is to blend, blend, blend until it comes together perfectly.

Heart Warmers Four loving couples: Happy thoughts and wisdom for long-lasting love Louise 30, Frank 32, and newborn Giuseppe Alexander – Married 2 Years On being new parents L: I’m so reliant on Frank to ensure that we give this little man the best life possible. I’ve never loved him as much as I do now. F: It’s definitely brought us closer. We want the same things for our baby so we’re working hard as a team to give him lots of love. On cherishing parenthood L: I look forward to the little moments – the smiles, the little one-liners, the first steps.

F: I look forward to teaching things to little Giuseppe. Hopefully we’ll have similar interests so we can enjoy hobbies together and be mates. What’s the best thing about your partner? L: The best thing about Frank is that he doesn’t have the mindset that something is a ‘woman’s job’. He’s very hands on – especially with Giuseppe. F: The best things about Louise are that she’s very diligent, efficient and smart.

What would you change about each other? L: If I changed anything, he wouldn’t be Frank! But he could have a little fun! If you know Frank, you know that he isn’t one for having fun, unless it’s for free! F: She’s a great planner, but when things don’t go to plan, she’s caught off-guard. She’d benefit from adapting to unplanned events. Their secret to a successful marriage Honesty and communication. If we don’t agree, we keep talking and listening to each others’ points until we find a compromise or a happy medium.

Aggie, 55 and Josie, 51 – Married 31 Years Josie’s favourite thing about Aggie He’s so welcoming and makes everyone feel comfortable, no matter who they are. Also, I love his eyes – they’re always sparkling. Aggie on Josie’s generous spirit She’s one of those people who gives so much and asks for so little in return. The one thing I’d change about my partner J: His time management skills. He’s so kind that he never wants the person he’s with to feel rushed – unfortunately this always makes him late!

A: I wish she’d enjoy sport more. Apart from that, she’s as perfect as one can be. Their secret to a successful marriage You fell in love with your partner in the first place for who they were and for the gifts God’s given them. Instead of trying to change your partner, aim to bring out the best in him or her. On the importance of spending quality time together It’s not what we have, but how we care for our loved ones that’s most important – and time can never be brought back once it’s gone.

Eyes

Did you know that humans are the only animal to produce emotional tears? Keep your eyes happy by eating foods rich in Vitamin A (carrots and other yellow and orange vegetables). Brighten your eyes with a rejuvenating serum (try Aveeno Eye Illuminator) that can also minimise wrinkles and fine lines. Sooth tired, irritated eyes with Optrex Multi Action Eye Wash.

Sinuses

Did you know that scientists still don’t know exactly why we have sinuses? Even so, these airfilled spaces tend to get infected. Guard against summer colds with Echinacea and Vitamin C. (Try Nature’s Own Echinacea-C.)

Hair

Did you know that chronic back pain is the most common physical ailment in Australia? If you are a sufferer, get the pain checked out to make sure it’s not signalling a serious medical problem. In the meantime, watch your posture and (gently!) incorporate strengthening and stretching exercises (yoga and Pilates are great) into your exercise routine. Also, Thermoskin make some compression support and heating products that may ease your pain.

Teeth

Did you know that tooth decay is epidemic in Australia? It’s our most common health problem, costing us about $2 billion a year. It’s also one of the most preventable health problems. Eat a healthy, balanced diet, avoid too many sweets and sugary drinks, brush twice a day with a soft toothbrush and a toothpaste containing fluoride (eg. Colgate), and don’t forget to floss.

Did you know that hair grows faster in the heat? See page 35 for some fun and easy hair treatments.

Did you know that Australian women are four times more likely to die of heart disease than breast cancer? The best way to prevent the disease is to eat well and exercise to maintain a healthy weight – and, most importantly, refrain from smoking. You can also try Wagner Cardio CoQ10, formulated to help maintain healthy circulation, blood pressure and cholesterol levels.

Liver

Did you know that your liver is responsible for over 500 different bodily functions, mostly to do with detoxification? Unfortunately one in 10 Australians are affected by ‘fatty liver disease’ due mostly to poor diet, sedentary lifestyle and overindulgence in alcohol. Treat this hard-working organ right by staying fit. You can also try Nature’s Own Milk Thistle, a known liver remedy.

Breasts

Did you know that the first bras were invented in Austria back in the 15th Century but didn’t become common until the early 1900s? Reduce strain on your back and neck by making sure you’re wearing the right-size bra. Also, check out Breast Council Network Australia (bcna.org.au) to learn how to properly self-examine for lumps.

women are four times more likely to have foot problems than men, mostly due to footwear? In fact, wearing heels just a few times a week can cause long-term damage – altering muscle and tendon structure and upping the risk of osteoarthritis later in life. So take a break from the stilettos and stretch your feet regularly.

Did you know that sales of thrush medications such as Canesten skyrocket in the summer months? Avoid this unpleasantness by wearing cotton underwear, using unscented detergents and keeping well hydrated.

Did you know that varicose veins are partly hereditary and partly a result of ageing? Though surgical and nonsurgical treatments are available, you can help prevent or minimise their occurrence by exercising and maintaining a healthy body weight. Also, avoid standing for long periods of time (especially in heels) and try not to sit cross-legged.

Life’s Little Luxuries

Treat yourself like a queen with these fun, do-it-yourself pampering techniques

Treat Your Body

Create an authentic spa atmosphere in your home by making it as tranquil and relaxing as possible:

Relax and moisturise: Spread some towels out in your ‘spa’. Warm some olive oil by rubbing it up in your hands, then massage it all over your body concentrating on your driest areas. Lay down on your towels (wrap yourself in them if you’re cold) and relax for 20 minutes, letting the oil sink in. Rinse off in a warm shower, gently washing away the oil with a loofah and light soap-free body wash. Then take a luxurious bath with some of Dr Teal’s Vapor Bath

» Generate some calm lighting: Opt for natural light or candles. » Spray a touch of your favourite scent or heat some calming essential oils. » Play a ‘spa mix’ on your iPod with music that makes you happy or download a guided meditation.

Sleep (Lavender) formula, full of soothing essential oils. When you’re ready, towel off and lather on a rich, nourishing moisturiser such as Aveeno Skin Relief Moisturising Cream or Designer Brands Coconut Body Butter. To cool off in the heat: Take a cool shower. (FYI, cold showers are proven to improve circulation and strengthen immunity. They also won’t dry you out like hot ones do.) Exfoliate with Aveeno Body Scrub.

» Mix a jug of ice water with mint leaves and lemon and cucumber slices. Sip continuously to stay hydrated.

Did you know? In ancient Rome, the local bath complex served an important social function – people gathered not only to keep clean, but to socialise and discuss current events.

everydaybeauty 35 Make your own refreshing body scrub 1. Choose your exfoliant: White sugar (gentle on skin), brown sugar (for very sensitive skin), salt (if you want a more rigorous mixture), or coffee grounds (for an energising blend). 2. Choose your oil: Baby oil, coconut oil, almond oil and olive oil all work well. 3. Mix together the oil and exfoliant in a bowl with your hands. Measurement tip: No matter how much you make, use roughly twice as much exfoliant as you do oil. 4. Add a few drops of your favourite essential oil, some aloe, or some Vitamin E oil, and – voilà! 5. Massage your creation onto your skin, concentrating on the tougher areas of your body, and rinse thoroughly. You’ll feel wonderfully invigorated.

Treat Your Face GIVE YOURSELF A REFRESHING FACIAL: Mash a ripe banana, a few tablespoons of sugar and a few drops of your favourite essential oil or pure vanilla extract. This will brighten and smooth your skin – perfect for enhancing a summer glow. GIVE YOURSELF A MOISTURISING FACIAL: Blend some cold cream, yoghurt, honey, avocado and some aloe (if you have it) together. Apply it generally on your face for 20 minutes and rinse. This will leave your skin hydrated and soft – perfect if you’re recovering from sunburn. Try a mask that suits your needs: Freeman’s Cucumber Facial Peel-Off Mask is great for removing impurities, while their Facial Clay Mask with Avocado & Oatmeal works wonders on clogged pores and acne-prone skin. CREATE YOUR OWN ROSEWATER TONER: Spas use rosewater because it’s an excellent natural astringent. This is great if you happen to have a bouquet of roses that’s passing its prime: Combine one cup of packed rose petals to every two cups of boiling water. Remove from heat right away, cover and let it sit until cool. Strain the liquid into a jar or spray bottle. Mist onto your face after a facial for a beautiful finish. If you have especially oily skin, swap the petals for green tea bags, a simple toning alternative.

Don’t forget the cucumber slices! Not only do they feel pleasantly cool and hydrating on your eyes, they also have natural antiinflammatory properties that reduce puffiness.

Treat Your Hair Treat dry, parched hair with a heavy-duty conditioning treatment like BaByliss Argan Pro Oil or Schwarzkopf Ultra Repair Mask. Work the product from roots to ends, then cover your hair in plastic wrap to help it soak in before rinsing. TO ADD VOLUME TO LIMP LOCKS: Mix one egg yolk, ½ cup of honey, two tablespoons of olive oil and two small, ripe avocados. Massage into your head and leave on for at least an hour. Shampoo and condition as usual. Your hair should feel bouncier right away. TO ADD SHINE TO DULL STRANDS: Apply a ¼ cup of olive oil into your hair’s ends (skip the roots) and leave it on for an hour. Then, blowdry your hair on the hottest setting for about five minutes. Shampoo and condition as usual. Your hair should be noticeably glossy and healthy-looking.

Spread the Word: Protect Your Prostate This may surprise you: Each year in Australia more men die from prostate cancer than women die from breast cancer. Among Australian men it’s the most common cancer after melanoma and the most deadly after lung cancer. Nearly 20,000 Australians will be diagnosed with the disease this year, and nearly 3,000 others will die from it. Though 80% of cases affect men over 60, a prostate cancer diagnosis at any age can have a devastating effect on a man’s quality of life. In fact, the younger the man, the more likely the cancer will spread and become life-threatening. And unfortunately, there’s no known prevention.

The good news? Because most prostate cancers are slowgrowing, the disease can often be effectively managed or treated. If diagnosed early enough, it can even be curable. YOU SHOULD CONSIDER GETTING TESTED IF: » You’re a man over 50. » You’ve been experiencing frequent and painful urination, blood in the urine and/or a weak stream. Note: These symptoms can occur even when no cancer is present. Also note: Most men don’t experience any symptoms at all. » You’re over 40 with a family history of the disease – particularly if your father or brother was diagnosed at a young age. Think you or a loved one might be at risk? See your GP to discuss your prostate cancer testing options. Call the Cancer Council Helpline at 13 11 20 or visit www.cancercouncil.org.au to learn more.

Did you know? While their fertility decreases drastically over time, men may still be able to father children well into their 80s.

WHEYING THE OPTIONS

Bulk up your knowledge of whey protein supplements What is whey protein? Isolated from whey (a by-product in cheese production), it’s one of two major proteins found in milk. Easy to digest and metabolise, whey protein is a very popular ingredient in many foods and nutritional supplements. And, as a complete protein, it has all the essential and non-essential amino acids your body needs.

Why take whey protein supplements? They’re not just for bodybuilders or gym junkies. Anyone who could benefit from more dietary protein can benefit from a whey supplement. While typically taken post-workout, you can whip up a protein shake pre-workout, first thing in the morning, or as a snack.

Why whey rather than other protein sources? Because it has the highest ‘biological value’ (BV) of any known protein. This means that whey protein can be absorbed and used by the body more efficiently and effectively than any other type. Egg protein sets the standard for BV measurement at 100 %. While beef’s BV is about 75 %, whey’s BV can reach as high as 170 %.

Among its numerous potential health benefits, whey protein: » Speeds up and improves muscle recovery » Promotes lean muscle growth » Increases the metabolic rate » Improves strength » Aids in weight loss by filling you up

What choices are available? There are three varieties of whey protein supplements on the market:

PRO TIP: Formulas infused with magnesium, Coenzyme Q10 and Vitamins E and C, can aid in muscle growth recovery.

Which products will work for me? It’s best to choose brands with naturally derived flavours and sweeteners. And, since most brands have added vitamins, minerals and other nutritional supplements, it’s a good idea to read up on which mix might satisfy your individual nutritional needs.

This is one of the good WPC brands on the market designed for men. It contains only naturally derived sweeteners and flavours. It can be mixed with water or milk and comes in vanilla, strawberry and chocolate. With 36 g of protein per serve and infused with magnesium, Coenzyme Q10 and Vitamins E and C, it’s ideal for muscle growth recovery.

That said, you’ll find that the differences between protein powders are either important or negligible depending on your personal fitness goals (and who you’re talking to). While many labels and bodybuilding websites speak of the importance of ‘low-carb’ and ‘low-fat’, for example, the truth is that carbohydrates, fats and proteins are all vital to health and fitness. Ultimately you’ll have to read the labels carefully and decide for yourself what works for you.

How much is enough? There’s no magic amount of whey protein to take per day. Everyone has different (and changing) needs and goals, so start with the recommended serving size and go from there. Did you know? All parts of an egg are edible, including the shell which is rich in calcium.

Fatherhood is a tough gig – no matter how great a dad you are, you can’t shield yourself from all of life’s nasty curveballs. But you can be prepared. It’s important to me that my kids (aged 5 and 7) get the nutrition they need. Should I be giving them vitamins and supplements? If so, which kinds? The body best absorbs vitamins and minerals through food sources. Your kids are probably fine without supplements if they’re healthy and eating a balanced diet full of orange and yellow fruits and vegetables, leafy greens, eggs, dairy, oily fish, poultry, meat, potatoes, whole grains, nuts, seeds and legumes. But if they’re fussy eaters, supplements might be a good idea – particularly because your kids are at such crucial stages of their development. Common deficiencies amongst Australian children include Vitamin D and Vitamin B-12, both vital for healthy blood and brain growth. Iron and zinc deficiencies are common among kids going through vegetarian phases, as calcium deficiencies are for those who don’t eat dairy. Also, while most Australian kids eat enough fruit, few eat enough vegetables. By kindergarten age, they need at least 1–2 servings of fruit and 2–4 servings of vegetables each day. Your best bet? Discuss your concerns with your paediatrician for advice specific to your kids’ nutritional needs. Make an appointment right away if your kids aren’t eating or drinking enough, aren’t growing normally, seem low on energy, or have a medical condition (such as cystic

fibrosis, autism or cerebral palsy) that increases their medical requirements. In the meantime, you can try Sustagen Kid Essentials Vanilla 900g. Mix with milk or water to make a delicious and nutritionally complete supplement shake. Another good choice, especially if your kids don’t like fish, is Nature’s Own Omega Delight. These fruity syrups are packed with omega-3 fatty acids, which are crucial for brain development and function. Both products are suitable for children over one year old.

My 14-year-old daughter asked me if I could take her to the doctor to get birth control pills. At first I said no and made it clear that I think she’s far too young to be having sex. She says she wants it to control her acne. Is this true? What should I do? Your daughter is correct. Birth control pills are, essentially, hormones. As acne is most often caused by hormone fluctuations that come with puberty, many brands are designed specifically for this purpose. If we take your daughter at her word (and there doesn’t seem to be a reason not to at this point), make sure she’s doing all she can for her skin before opting for The Pill. At the very least, she should use a soap-free pH-balanced cleanser and an oil-free moisturiser twice a

x

day. Skincare products containing salicylic acid (see Clean & Clear or Clearasil) help unclog pores, while others containing benzoyl peroxide (see Benzac) work by killing pimplecausing bacteria on the skin’s surface. Make sure the products don’t irritate or dry out her skin. If your daughter’s acne is still not improving, there are various oral and topical antibiotics available by prescription. She can discuss these options with her GP. In response to your main concern, we can’t tell you whether or when your daughter plans to become sexually active. The best we can do is encourage her to become fully educated about safe sex. She can check out Scarleteen (www.scarleteen.com), an excellent, comprehensive resource on the subject aimed at teens. If you need to talk more about this, try your state’s Parent Helpline. They’re open seven days a week and provide free and confidential counselling.

Cooking with Nic & Rocco FROM STEAKS TO HANGOVERS TO ROMANTIC MEALS WITH THE MISSUS, THESE BOYS HAVE YOU COVERED

E

veryday Man caught up with the Adelaide-based super-chef duo of My Kitchen Rules-fame. They offer some simple culinary wisdom and much-appreciated man advice below.

What should every man have in his kitchen at all times?

snacks can I serve that will win me man-points with my mates?

Seasonal fresh fruits and vegetables, olive oil, lean meats, fish and freshly grown herbs.

Keep it simple. Even a BBQ is a much healthier option than greasy takeaway. Sliders (mini hamburgers) are really popular now and you can have them with nearly anything.

Nic and Rocco, you are both very open about your Italian-Australian heritage. In what ways has your background shaped you into the fantastic cooks you are today? Growing up with an Italian background has definitely shaped the way we look at food. We have learnt most of our cooking skills from traditional Italian recipes passed on from our mothers, which were passed onto them from theirs. Growing up together, everything revolved around food in one way or the other. I’m having the boys over next weekend to watch the footy and I want to be a bit more creative than the usual take away or bowls of chips. What kinds of simple, tasty

Normally when I’m hung-over, I gorge on Maccas or KFC, but I just end up feeling sick later. Do you have a special ‘hangover cure’ or something easy I can whip up when I’m feeling sluggish and lazy after a big night? Soup, believe or not, helps replenish hydration and isn’t too heavy when you’re feeling a little queasy. Something light, like a chicken or minestrone soup. You can always add some pasta or rice to give it more substance. My girlfriend’s birthday is coming up and I want to impress her with a romantic dinner for two. How should I pull this off?

Did you know? Watermelons are actually vegetables. From the botanical family Cucurbitaceae, they’re most closely related to cucumbers and pumpkins.

Nic & Rocco’s Scallop and Chorizo Stack with Avocado and Salsa Fresco Ingredients

Method

» 1 kg of frozen scallops (without roe)

1. Make the salsa first: Finely dice red onion and tomatoes into even cubes, season with olive oil and salt and pepper to taste.

» 4 sticks of chorizo » 3 avocados » 3 limes » 6 Roma tomatoes » 1 small tub of sour cream » 2 red onions » Extra-virgin olive oil » Cracked sea salt and pepper » Salted butter

2. Place flesh of diced avocado and sour cream into pestle (or mixer) and blend until smooth. Add juice of one lime and salt and pepper to taste. 3. Add a good portion of butter to a large, non-stick pan on high heat. Once the butter has dissolved, quickly add sliced chorizo first, then scallops, and cook evenly on both sides. 4. Stack the avocado blend on the chorizo and scallops, and finish with a dollop of salsa.

Nic & Rocco’s Pepper and Chilli Blue Swimmer Crabs Cooking is definitely more romantic than going out. It doesn’t have to be anything too complicated – just a simple dinner with candlelight. Even a picnic will score you brownie points. [Editor’s note: We recommend one of these wonderful and easy-tomake recipes.] I’m always famished after a solid gym session, but I never know what to eat. What can I toss together quickly that will satisfy my hunger and help my muscles recover? Whip up a thick shake with items like bananas, yogurt, honey, eggs and any other fruits, nuts or seeds you have lying around. And finally, what every man needs to know: What is the secret to cooking the perfect steak? Have your meat at room temperature before cooking. Also, it’s very important to let the meat rest before eating.

Ingredients

Method

» 6 whole blue swimmer crabs

1. Prepare the crabs: Remove the claws, upper shell, gills and mustard. Wash the shell and cut the bodies into 4 pieces.

» 1 cup of vegetable oil for frying » 3 tbsp of soft green peppercorns » 5 garlic cloves, sliced » 2 red chillies, sliced » 8 tbsp of soy sauce » 8 tbsp of oyster sauce » 2 tsp of castor sugar » 100 g of butter, diced » 500 ml of water » 1 bunch of spring onions, finely sliced » 1 bunch of coriander, finely sliced » 1 Thai chilli, finely sliced

2. Heat a wok on high heat, add some vegetable oil and heat until it starts smoking. Then add the chopped crab and cook for 2–3 minutes, turning regularly. 3. Remove the crab and return the wok to the heat. Add peppercorns, chill and garlic and cook for 1 minute. Add soy sauce, oyster sauce, sugar, butter and water, and return the crab to the wok. 4. Bring to a boil and then simmer for 5–7 minutes (or until the sauce thickens). 5. Scatter crabs with spring onion, chilli and coriander and serve with rice or egg noodles.

RECOVERY TIME

Winning ways to prevent and treat common sports injuries

Moderate Pain, Steady Gain

WELCOME TO OUR SUMMER ISSUE! For the under-appreciated silent majority of hardworking, family-loving, humble, helpful and all-round decent blokes out there – this magazine’s for you. We can understand how hard it can be to ask for help, particularly with day-to-day things. That’s where we come in. Tackling the basics of health, fitness and fatherhood, we aim to celebrate and give guidance to the modern man – the Everyday Man.

It’s all well and good to push yourself to the limit, just don’t be reckless about it. When it comes to injuries, prevention is the best medicine – eat properly, listen to your body and rest between workouts. Most crucial of all: Drink plenty of water. Hydration is vital to injury prevention and recovery. Learn to differentiate between ‘good pain’ (all-over tiredness and soreness) and ‘bad pain’ (acute pain, joint tenderness and nagging aches). When in doubt, stop and rest. Remember: Injuries can take a long time to heal and you become more injury-prone with each re-injury. Wait until you’ve fully recovered (painfree at rest) to start exercising again slowly and carefully, increasing intensity gradually.
