LETTER FROM THE EDITOR I always find the Autumn/ Winter season a little hard to handle. The days are short, the nights are long, and Adelaide is suffering from a Mad March hangover that reminds us just how much fun we used to be! So this Autumn/Winter I've decided to approach the season differently.
Those who know me know about my passion for travel. In fact, some would argue that it's second only to my passion for fashion! For me, travel brings the desire to learn about place, history, culture and change, the energy to walk all day despite the weather (or my poor yet beautiful choice of footwear), and the tirelessness to do it all again tomorrow! It's exhausting, yes, but it's a wonderful way to experience a place, and it's the foundation of my Autumn/ Winter plan; view Adelaide through the eyes of a visitor.
Taking this new approach recently inspired me to visit the Old Adelaide Gaol; the subsequent location for the beautiful Jailbird photo shoot and the oldest remaining colonial public building in Adelaide. While there, I was surprised to learn that most Adelaideans don't even know how to get to the Old Adelaide Gaol, yet the reward for discovering this beautiful location only minutes from the heart of the CBD is vast. So I encourage you all to take on the 'tourist challenge'; don't let the cool weather put you off exploring our beautiful city! Whether you choose to head to the football at Adelaide Oval or explore the hidden gems of Rundle Mall, the pages of UNIQUE will steer you toward the perfect outfit for the occasion (and maybe even some of the great places to visit). And if the weather really does get too much or you decide to head out to one of our beautiful
regions for a weekend away, our friends at the City Library have provided a range of great winter reads for all ages to curl up in front of the fire with… and borrowing them is FREE! It's true that Rundle Mall has everything you need to make your winter warmer. And with stores open up to 7pm Monday to Thursday* there's even more opportunities to explore the city. I'm excited to see what Autumn/ Winter 2014 will bring, so stay in touch with Rundle Mall at www.rundlemall.com or follow 'Rundle Mall' on social media. See you in the Mall!

There's no doubt that we're blessed with access to fantastic wine regions and a beautiful coastline in South Australia, yet for me the city holds an allure that is second to none. Become a tourist in your own town and you come to appreciate the changes that are currently underway; the inaugural season of AFL at Adelaide Oval, the new City Library boasting state of the art facilities, and the ongoing redevelopment of our premier shopping destination, Rundle Mall. Change is often uncomfortable, but I for one am
excited about where Adelaide is headed and the opportunities that will arise as a result.

WHAT'S NEW SHOP AND STAY The much anticipated Ibis Adelaide hotel, on the corner of Grenfell Street and Twin Street, is due for completion later this year. The hotel will offer guests restaurant and bar facilities, a fitness centre, business centre, guest lounge, conference and meeting spaces and will showcase an enviable panoramic view of the Adelaide skyline.
RELAX AND READ Adelaide City Council has opened the City Library on Level 3 of the Rundle Place building featuring ample space to relax and read. Take time out with a book or enjoy the exciting program of activities on offer throughout the year. Check out the library's winter read recommendations on page 69 for some inspiration.
JAMIE'S ITALIAN TRANSFORMATION Jamie Oliver's global chain of Italian restaurants, Jamie's Italian, will soon open in the Rundle Mall precinct. It will transform one of the city's most prominent buildings, the ground-floor of the old Westpac building at the corner of King William Street and North Terrace, into a spectacular dining room. Jamie's Italian franchise started in Oxford, England, four years ago and has now spread to 30 restaurants in the UK, Ireland and Dubai. In Australia, outlets are operating in Sydney, Perth and Canberra.

The launch of the inaugural Adelaide Oval Showdown between the Adelaide Crows and Port Adelaide Power on 29 March saw tens of thousands of people visit Rundle Mall. Prior to Crows games throughout the season fans can enjoy exclusive activities and offers in the Mall including 'Specky', an inflatable and interactive football display designed to allow children to practice their football skills. One lucky attendee at every Crows home game will also be rewarded with the opportunity to play a game on Adelaide Oval later in the season. The Power will be encouraging their fans and members to meet in the Mall prior to each home game, followed by a march to Adelaide Oval. For further information see page 66.

GOT BALLS
Si n ce 1 9 7 6
THE NEXT STAGE OF THE RUNDLE MALL REDEVELOPMENT SEES ADELAIDE'S ICONIC MALL'S BALLS PREPARING FOR A CHANGE OF SCENERY
S
ydney has a bridge, Melbourne has a wheel, and Adelaide's got... balls. Actually Rundle Mall's got balls, and by balls we mean spheres – two large stainless steel spheres balanced on top of one another, measuring over 4 metres tall with a diameter of 2.15 metres. 'The Spheres', a project commissioned by the Hindmarsh Building Society and donated to the City of Adelaide to mark its 1977 centenary, was erected on 5 October 1977 by the late Viennese/Australian sculptor Bert Flugelman. "The total cost came in at $18,000, of which $16,000 was paid by the Hindmarsh Building Society and the remainder was funded by ACC with the assistance of the Visual Arts Board," an Adelaide City Council Archives employee tells UNIQUE. Little did Flugelman know that over the 37 years since its inception, this silver sculpture would become synonymous with Rundle Mall and prove to be an iconic South Australian landmark, an integral part of Adelaide's cultural journey and a popular meeting place (most Adelaideans have uttered the phrase "Meet you at the Balls!" at least once or twice). As part of Adelaide City Council's $25 million redevelopment of Rundle Mall, The Spheres need to be relocated, a move which has proved to divide the community while simultaneously highlighting South Australian's intrinsic connection to this bold artwork. While in future the Balls will be only metres from their current location, they will need to be temporarily removed from the Mall for a few months to assist with underground works.
"The sounds they make – and it’s a good performance stage. Everyone loves taking photos of the Balls." Skyla, 19
"They are just cool. Even our Swedish friends thought they were cool!" Sophie, 19
"They are quintessentially Adelaide. If you want to meet anyone, you meet at the Mall's Balls." Sue, 56
"So South Australian! Adelaide’s got balls, baby!" Suvam, 33
"The Balls are very different. I’m from Perth, we don’t have this sort of stuff over there." Rob, 34 with Hector, 17 months
Rundle Mall's redevelopment project is scheduled to continue throughout 2014 with the aim of creating a vibrant and exciting retail precinct to be enjoyed both day and night. Many of the finishing touches that can be expected throughout the Mall can already be seen in the completed Western end of Rundle Mall, including the introduction of new paving, seating, lighting and foliage. "We understand that the Rundle Mall redevelopment may cause disruption to shoppers and retailers alike, however seeing people engage with the new, modern, and attractive Mall at the project's completion will make the works all worth it. The urban-setting seats and modern lighting will encourage visitation throughout the early evening as we create a vibrant retail and leisure space," explained Tom McCready, Executive Program Manager at Adelaide City Council. "Rundle Mall is undoubtedly undergoing a significant time of change, and we are very thankful to our customers and retailers for their patience," said Rundle Mall Management Authority CEO, Ian Darbyshire. "At the heart of this project is creating a place that people want to come and work in, play in and stay in, and The Spheres are an important focal point to that end so we're looking forward to their return." "While we are saddened to see The Spheres leave the precinct during the redevelopment works, there can be no doubt that Rundle Mall has Balls and will have for a long time to come!" For further information and updates visit www.rundlemallmasterplan.com
So how will we go without our Balls? In search of an answer, we asked Rundle Mall patrons "what is it about The Spheres that leaves Adelaideans smitten?"

Ruth Walkington, Rundle Mall CommBank Branch Manager
CommBank in the Mall IN THIS FAST PACED WORLD OF MOBILE DEVICES AND CONSTANT CONNECTIVITY IT CAN BE EASY TO ADMIT YOU HAVEN'T STEPPED FOOT IN A BANK IN YEARS. But if there's one to break the trend it's the new Commonwealth Bank branch in Rundle Mall! Having recently moved from its previous location, the new Rundle Mall Commonwealth Bank branch is a far cry from the awkward silence, long queues and paper bankbooks of the past. The branch has undergone a huge transformation and now boasts a banking experience of the future. Since Mr (later Sir) Denison Miller opened its first branch on Collins Street,
Melbourne in 1912, CommBank has constantly evolved its branch network to provide more ways for customers to bank on their terms; and those terms have changed a lot over the years! The bank has seen Australians through The Great Depression, the 'recession we had to have' and the technology boom, all while helping more South Australians own their own home than any other bank. It's not surprising then that CommBank is Australia's leading provider of integrated financial services, including retail, premium, business and institutional banking, funds management, superannuation, insurance, investment and share-broking products and services.
www.rundlemall.com  37
While the bank branches of today are unrecognisable from 100 years ago, they still remain a central hub for customers, businesses and communities. Bar 9
"I was so happy when Bar 9 set up shop in the Adelaide Central Plaza food court! Not only is it in central Rundle Mall, but owner Ian Callaghan has done a great job decking it out," muses Chloe. "You'll often catch me here working on my next Yelp event while sipping a delicious 5Senses coffee they roast themselves, and enjoying the eclectic décor and cosy vibe."

WINDOW SHOPPING (OKAY, SHOPPING) Ahh shopping, the Mall's main drawcard. With Arcades (Adelaide, Regent et al), Plazas (Adelaide Central, Rundle Mall et al), a Tower (Renaissance), a Centre (Myer), and a Place (Rundle) playing home to an assortment of goods – handmade, vintage, bespoke, artisan, designer and big brands – shopping has never been more exciting. "I couldn't resist! I picked up this cute tome: 'A Pug's Guide to Etiquette' from Presence as a friend's birthday present," Chloe tells us. "The place is packed with handmade goodness like divine smelling soy candles and quirky jewellery from Days of August."

CHOCOLATE TREAT
(#NOM)
(NAUGHTY!)
Food courts. Cafes. Delis. Sandwich bars. Fast food. International cuisines. Sweets and treats. Rundle Mall really puts on a spread come lunchtime.
Whether it's a day of work or a day of play, you can't go past a mid afternoon treat. Read: chocolate.
"Today's lunch is at United Latino Cocina," Chloe tells us. "I was so excited to hear that the owners of Lucky Lupitas had set up shop in the heart of the city. This Mexican paradise boasts delicious cuisine like chicken tostada, fish burrito or finger licken' good corn on a cob. Bliss!"

AFTER WORK DRINK/ SUPERMARKET STOP
"I needed this!" laughs Chloe. "Haigh's dark peppermint chocolate frog from Beehive Corner is my weakness. You get a free tasting with every purchase too. So basically it's double the chocolate for only $1.25!" Richmond Hotel
What better way to wind down after a hectic day than taking some time out at First Bar at the Hotel Richmond. The bar is dotted with chic trimmings – a long Calcutta marble bar, sparkling wire-ball chandeliers and modern art, making it the perfect backdrop to unwind and relax. Pick up the bar tab and then tonight's dinner at one of the two supermarkets in Rundle Mall. "It's officially gin o'clock and I enjoy spending it in this hidden oasis above the Mall! The fairy lighting flatters, the cocktails sparkle and you can watch the Mall rush by after work over drinks with a friend. Finally, it's only a short stroll to the supermarket for dinner supplies. Perfect!" Chloe concludes.
(GET YOUR INTELLECT ON) There are libraries and then there are libraries. The new City Library isn't your typical accommodation for dog-eared books, old magazines and DVDs. This multipurpose space houses cutting edge technologies, inspirational areas and functional universal design that sparks learning, creativity and innovation. Now that's a library. "The new City Library is amazing," Chloe says. "There's a beautiful outdoor reading room, a 3D print lab, free Wi-Fi and great spaces for catching up on my work emails and Yelp reviews. Oh and perusing the books – naturally!"

Were you surprised by a clanging bell as you rushed past the corner of Rundle Mall and King William Street this year? Brett Charlesworth has installed a large ship's bell in honour of his father Chappy Charlesworth's Naval history, at the iconic number 1 Rundle Mall address. The staff ring it loudly when the nuts are fresh and hot from the in-store roaster, as a salute to Chappy. Brett Charlesworth is proudly watching his three sons Rhys, Kain and Liam's involvement with the company increase.
Charlesworth Nut's ninth store in Rundle Mall is described by his son Kain as Brett's "proudest moment in the life of the company". Special family traditions contribute significantly to Charlesworth Nuts' place as a South Australian institution, fuelled by the dedication of four generations of Charlesworths, Brett Charlesworth recently celebrating the birth of his Granddaughter, Jayde. It is hoped that a fifth generation can find their place within the company.
Though you may never buy a delicious 'chocky frog' over the counter from Alister Haigh, he is very much the driving force behind how it gets into your hot little hand. Haigh is Adelaide chocolate royalty, a fourth generation chocolatier, he can still be found in one of Haigh's Chocolates fourteen stores around Australia, continuing to monitor the quality that has become synonymous with the Haigh's brand. An unassuming man, he seems to let the product do the talking regarding the chocolate,
however he recalls warmly his father's particular penchant for dark chocolate and mentions the company's many long-term employees by name. Part of Haigh's role is to oversee the purchase of cocoa beans from several countries. Haigh's Chocolates is amongst a handful of companies in Australia manufacturing chocolate from the bean. "It's much more expensive to bring in the beans," Haigh tells UNIQUE, "but that way we have quality control over the whole flavour process."

THE BNKR EXPERIENCE
NOW OPEN
WE ARE HOOKED ON AUSTRALIAN FASHION LABELS. MONTHLY COLLECTIONS OF MODERN LOOKS FROM CAMEO, KEEPSAKE AND FINDERS KEEPERS ENSURE WE REGULARLY VISIT LOCAL STOCKISTS FOR UPDATES. However, in April we changed the way we buy these beloved brands. Following the success of their online retail outlet, FSHN BNKR, the company has launched a flagship store, BNKR, on the corner of Rundle Mall and Pulteney Street. Owners Melanie and Dean Flintoft had been searching for the ideal space until they set eyes upon the former Commonwealth Bank site. FSHN BNKR's E-commerce Manager, Jared Brown, has been working to translate the online store’s essence into a physical space. "We wanted space and one that we could do something with," says Jared. "The fact that it's on the corner there – it's a really beautiful, highly visible spot." FSHN BNKR's website was originally the only platform for customers to view and buy every style from each Finders Keepers, Keepsake and Cameo collection, rather than having access to select items in a boutique. "We are very proud of the developments to come out of every collection so we wanted a medium where people could buy everything from the collection, not just what other people selected," Jared says.
"That translates into the vision for our flagship store; it's a place where people can actually shop the full range and it isn't mixed in with other brands. Essentially, each of the labels have their own area and the range is displayed as it's intended by the designer." The company's latest label, Jaggar, will be joining the mix in June 2014. Catering to the off-duty model aesthetic, Jaggar fuses high-end quality with a laid back vibe. "There's leathers in there, so it's a little bit of a different style to the other labels. It will fit quite nicely alongside the ones that are existing," Jared says.
Despite Cameo, Finders Keepers and Keepsake being stocked in more than 3,000 stores throughout 20 countries, BNKR plans to launch internationally, so fans can experience the

collection and its creative process. Jared attributes the brands' local success to their luxury feel and affordable price point. "I think the style's quite progressive. We have such loyal customers and fans of the labels," he says. "Everyone who works here is really Adelaide-centric and loves the city, so I think part of the success is that people are really happy to be here. It's awesome for this sort of stuff to come out of Adelaide."
"EVERYONE WHO WORKS HERE IS REALLY ADELAIDE-CENTRIC AND LOVES THE CITY, SO I THINK PART OF THE SUCCESS IS THAT PEOPLE ARE REALLY HAPPY TO BE HERE."
For the Australian Fashion Labels team, it has been a perpetual effort to create the bespoke shopping experience for each brand, with much time spent on perusing textures, colours and materials for the fit out. BNKR showcases the designers' mood boards and a back story brought to life for each of the 11 collections released annually.

PM DELIGHTS IL MONDO CAFFÈ BAR Shop 8, 20 James Place • 8212 3626 Looking for an authentic Italian experience with that homemade feel? Look no further than il Mondo caffè bar, James Place. This quaint Italian haunt might go by many names – caffé, bar, wine bar – but one thing's for sure. Luca, the owner of this fine establishment, has really honed in on his specialities – homemade regional Italian food for breakfast, lunch and dinner. With a new Italian dish introduced to the menu weekly, there's always something new to taste. By trade Luca is a sommelier, so you can be guaranteed there's a wide selection of fantastic vino on the menu too, making il Mondo caffè bar the first Italian wine bar in Adelaide and the only place in the Rundle Mall area offering homemade meals and alcohol, morning til late. And let's not forget 'aperitivos' (available from 5:30pm to 7pm). "'Aperitivo' is a traditional Italian ritual of bites and Italian gourmet food," Luca explains. "It's often enjoyed with 'Aperol spritz', the customary beverage, or other selected drinks. It's the perfect way to enjoy unlimited access to Italian homemade food and a beverage before heading home after work." "il Mondo caffè bar is the first place in Australia where people can experience this," he proudly adds. Visit il Mondo caffè bar and you'll be struck by its worldly charms. So where does it come from? Last year Luca spent 370 days backpacking around the world, visiting 41 states and all of the continents, and his incessant travel is evident in every corner – the design of the venue has clearly been inspired by it. While travel has definitely influenced il Mondo caffè bar, one country's influence remains prominent – Italy. With dishes like 'pasta al ragu' (succulent meat with tomato), 'pasta al pesto' or homemade 'parmigiana' (eggplants and mozzarella), how could you resist? Open daily from 8am to 8:30pm and on Fridays and Saturdays until 10pm. Available for private functions and wine tasting events. www.ilmondocaffebar.com.au

Doctor Who ran for an impressive 26 seasons and featured eleven actors portraying the Doctor, but flagging viewer numbers caused the series to be suspended in 1989. A reboot of the show made a return to our screens in 2005 with a whole new showrunner, cast, writers and crew, as well as a brand spanking new Doctor portrayed by Christopher Eccleston. Although everyone involved was nervous about how it would be received, Doctor Who mania exploded all over again. The show is still universally recognised as one of Britain's finest television shows and has always been a significant part of British popular culture, but since its new beginning it has become a cult television favourite here in Australia too. People who watched the original series could enjoy it all over again thanks to the cleverness and quirkiness the reboot retained in spades – it was these qualities that drew in a whole new (and much younger) audience with a Doctor for the 21st century.
Known as the Ninth Doctor, Eccleston lasted one year and was then succeeded by fan favourites David Tennant as the Tenth Doctor (2005–2010), and Matt Smith as the Eleventh Doctor (2010–2013). Thanks to the Time Lord's handy ability to regenerate when he dies, we have recently gained a Twelfth Doctor – veteran actor Peter Capaldi, who took on the role after Matt Smith's last hurrah in the much-hyped 50 th anniversary episode 'The Day of the Doctor' and the following Christmas special (the Twelfth

Doctor's first appearance). The fan frenzy surrounding these episodes whipped up a fresh new appreciation for the show, and firmly ensured it was foremost on the 'cool stuff to watch' list again. If this success wasn't enough, not only did Doctor Who make a massive impact on our viewing schedules, the distinctive and quirky outfits of the always-individual Doctor have influenced fashion trends as well – just look at the bowties, elegant sports jackets teamed with sneakers and slim-fitting suits that are dominating men's styles at the moment!

FOOTYCITY in the
SOUTH AUSTRALIA MAY BE DIVIDED DOWN TEAM LINES, BUT THERE'S ONE THING WE ALL AGREE ON; RUNDLE MALL IS THE PLACE TO BE THIS FOOTY SEASON!
A
ustralian rules football is a tradition and a religion for many South Australians, so it is understandable that the move to Adelaide Oval has been a long anticipated and very successful one. However, despite the excitement of the move and the amazing facilities at the ground, football in the city is going to take some getting used to. The tailgate barbecue may have been lost but the feeling of community definitely hasn't, with Rundle Mall hosting pre-game entertainment and player meet-and-greets throughout the season. But there's no bias here – whether you proudly wear red, blue and gold, the teal, black and white, or even the colours of a visiting team, Rundle Mall has something for everyone. Ahead of the season commencement, Rundle Mall started working alongside both SA teams to ensure there is plenty of activity and heaps of fun to be had in the Mall before each game. Cities all around the world enjoy a fantastic atmosphere before major sporting events and the Rundle Mall Management Authority is committed to ensuring that Adelaide sees that same effect. "Football in the city brings an exceptional opportunity for Adelaide. We're looking to make Rundle Mall a fantastic 'must visit' place for footy fans whether they're shopping, dining, just soaking up the atmosphere on game day, or return later to enjoy everything we offer," enthuses Rundle Mall CEO, Ian Darbyshire. "Our partnerships with both the Adelaide Football Club and the Port Adelaide Football Club allow us a unique and unbiased position to support football in general and encourage engagement with a wide range of customers."

PORT ADELAIDE As the Port Adelaide club song suggests, "there's history here in the making", and that couldn't be more true when discussing the Power's march from Rundle Mall to Adelaide Oval. Marching can be a show of strength but in the case of Port Adelaide fans, it is a show of pride in their community. Prior to each Port Adelaide home game Port Adelaide fans are encouraged to meet in Rundle Mall, get to know their fellow fans, hear from representatives from the Club and playing group, and traverse the City together – and what a success it's been!
"At Port Adelaide we're focused on bringing the city to life around game day and our partnership with Rundle Mall is a terrific example of our commitment to this." "The football brings 40–50,000 people to the city each week. At Port Adelaide we're focused on bringing the city to life around game day and our partnership with Rundle Mall is a terrific example of our commitment to this," says Port Adelaide's General Manager Membership Services, Matthew Richardson. "We want our people's football experience to start the moment they arrive in the city and our march from Rundle Mall to Adelaide Oval does just that." Head down to the Oval on Port Adelaide game days and you might also think you've taken a wrong turn and ended up back in the Mall. You'd be forgiven for this mistake as you've probably just stumbled across Rundle Mall's replica Mall's Balls, which will feature in the Oval foyer each game.
Take a Specky!
At the heart of exciting football is the possibility of a 'specky'; a spectacular mark usually involving one player launching themselves into the air with the assistance of an opponent's back. It's the kind of moment young fans and prospective AFL stars dream of having and this year, you could have that moment in Rundle Mall. Prior to each Adelaide Crows home match, Specky, an inflatable interactive event will take place in Rundle Mall. You and the kids will have the chance to see what it feels like to launch yourself over a player and take that mark. There may even be a Crows rookie on hand to show you how it's done.
"Our club is really excited to be working with Rundle Mall to give football families the complete football experience in the city." "It's a very exciting time for the City of Adelaide and the Rundle Mall precinct," says Adelaide Football Club Chief Operating Officer and retired player, Nigel Smart. "Our club is really excited to be working with Rundle Mall to give football families the complete football experience in the city." We've all dreamed of playing on Adelaide Oval, and thanks to Rundle Mall's partnership with the Adelaide Crows, you may just have that opportunity. Be in the crowd at an Adelaide Crows home game and you could be rewarded

My Brother the Werewolf
Bill Condon
Penny Dale
Sienna Mercer
From the award-winning author of A Straight Line to My Heart, The Simple Things is a slice of life story about Stephen, a boy who doesn't quite fit in, and his elderly Aunt Lola, told with affection and humour.
Featuring a riotously rhythmic text and vibrant illustrations, this brand new picture book in the hugely successful series is packed with adventure and a rabble of roaring, rescuing dinosaurs! For readers two and over.
Twins Daniel and Justin aren't spooked by ghosts and pumpkins – after all, one of them is a werewolf! But there's still plenty to be scared about – like knowing when to hold your new girlfriend's hand, and having to swap identities to keep your biggest family secret safe.

Welcome to Your New Life
Fire Study
Manu Feildel
Anna Goldsworthy
Maria Snyder
After a recent trip to his homeland, Australia's best-loved French chef, Manu Feildel, was inspired by a way of life that values the quality of food, and the importance of sharing it around a table each day. If you think cooking French food involves tricky techniques and long lists of ingredients, you'll love these easy dishes. From Manu's take on vol-eu-vents, quiche and crepes, to perfect steak with red wine and little chocolate pots for dessert, Manu shows you how to enjoy cooking French food at home every day.
When classical pianist Anna Goldsworthy falls pregnant with her first child, she is both excited and anxious about what lies ahead. Should she indulge her craving for sausage after sixteen years without meat? Will her birth plan involve Enya or hypnosis, or neither? And just how worried should she be about her baby falling into a composting toilet? Welcome to Your New Life captures the shock of leaving behind the life that you know and starting the great adventure that is parenthood.
The apprenticeship is over, now the real test has begun. When word that Yelena is a Soulfinder – able to capture and release souls – spreads like wildfire, people grow uneasy. Already Yelena's unusual abilities and past have set her apart. As the Council debates Yelena's fate, she receives a disturbing message: a plot is rising against her homeland, led by a murderous sorcerer she has defeated before.
The War that Ended Peace
The Berlin-Baghdad Express
Vampire Diaries: The Salvation: Unspoken
Margaret MacMillan
Sean McMeekin
L. J. Smith
In 1914, Europe walked into a catastrophic conflict which killed millions of its men, bled its economies dry, shook empires and societies to pieces, and fatally undermined Europe's dominance of the world. Beginning in the early nineteenth century, and ending with the assassination of Arch Duke Franz Ferdinand, award-winning historian Margaret MacMillan uncovers the huge political and technological changes, national decisions and – just as importantly – the small moments of human muddle and weakness that led Europe from peace to disaster.
The Berlin-Baghdad Express explores one of the most important but least understood stories of the First World War – the bid by the Germans to destroy the British Empire by harnessing the power of Islam. As the Ottoman Empire threw its weight behind Germany, a hugely ambitious project began to unhinge Britain's global grip. Sean McMeekin's fascinating and surprising book sheds new light on the First World War, and reveals the story of an incredible plan – one that came perilously, astonishingly close to succeeding.
Death is only the beginning. Elena Gilbert's entire world has shattered in a single moment. Her true love, Stefan, is dead, staked through the heart by their so-called friend Jack. Now the only thing Elena cares about is destroying Jack and his race of scientifically created vampires. Elena and Damon set out to uncover the mystery of Jack's dark past but as they spend more time together, Elena and Damon can't deny that their connection is stronger than ever. Can she face her feelings for him without betraying Stefan's memory, or are some things better left unspoken?
