True Eid lies in continuing good deeds and sustaining Ramadan’s virtues

Highlights from Huzoor’s Eid-ul-Fitr sermon 2025

Islamabad, Tilford, UK, 31 March 2025: At approximately 11 am local time, Hazrat Mirza Masroor Ahmad, Khalifatul Masih V, may Allah be his Helper, made his way into the Mubarak Mosque to lead the congregation in Eid-ul-Fitr prayer and deliver the Eid sermon.

A large gathering of Ahmadis – men, women, and children – assembled in Islamabad to offer Eid-ul-Fitr 2025 prayer behind their beloved imam, Hazrat Khalifatul Masih Vaa, and to listen to his sermon.

Following the Eid prayer, Hazrat Amirul Momineenaa recited tashahud, ta‘awwuz, Surah al-Fatihah, and said:

“Ramadan concluded yesterday, and today, by the grace of Allah the Almighty, we are celebrating Eid-ul-Fitr – a day of joy. This joy stems from the good deeds we performed during Ramadan and the commitments we made and renewed to continue on the path of righteousness.

“However, Eid is not merely a day of celebration; it is also a day of reaffirming our pledge to uphold and sustain the virtuous practices we observed throughout Ramadan. Only then will this truly be an Eid in its fullest and most meaningful sense.”

Hazrat Amirul Momineenaa explained that a true believer is the one whom the Promised Messiah, peace be upon him, described as someone who remains steadfast in righteousness, resolving to continue performing good deeds and abstaining from evil. Merely refraining from wrongdoing is not true piety; rather, the essence of righteousness lies in the consistent practice

of virtue. Hence, on this blessed day of Eid, we reaffirm our commitment to uphold the lessons we learned during Ramadan. We pledge to continue fulfilling the obligations of serving humanity (huquq-ul-ibad) just as we did throughout the month of fasting. And it is in the joy of making this solemn commitment that we celebrate this day of Eid.

Huzooraa said, “This Eid thus serves as an opportunity to remind us of our commitments.” He said therefore, we should not spend this day merely in play, amusement, and wearing new clothes. Rather, we must reflect on the lesson that

Eid brings for us – that we must continue practicing righteousness. We must fulfil both our duties to Allah the Almighty and our obligations towards His creation.

Hazrat Amirul Momineenaa said:

“Today, we must make this pledge, for it is this very commitment that has brought us together here on the day of Eid. We have gathered to reaffirm our dedication, just as we do every Eid. The steps we took towards righteousness during Ramadan must now continue to advance even further. It is in this spirit that we are assembled here today – both to pray and to rejoice.

Hadith-e-Rasul – Sayings of the Holy Prophet Muhammadsa

Straighten your rows

Hazrat Anasra narrated that the Prophetsa said: “Straighten your rows, for indeed, aligning the rows is part of establishing the prayer.” (Sahih alBukhari, Kitab al-adhan, Bab iqamati s-saffi min tamami s-salah, Hadith 723)

The Station of the Truthful

The second form of excellence is that which characterises the Truthful (Siddiqin). The Arabic word siddiq is in the superlative form, and refers to a person who is so absorbed in the truth that nothing of his inner self remains. Such a one adheres to rectitude of the highest level, and is a sincere lover of the truth. It is at this point that one is referred to as a Siddiq. This is such a station that when a person reaches it, they gather within themselves all forms of truth and rectitude, and begin to draw them in. Just as a burning glass concentrates and draws in the rays of the sun, in the same way a Siddiq attracts towards themselves the excellences of truth (sadaqat). As someone has said:

In the world, gold attracts gold, and treasure attracts treasure. When a thing grows and multiplies, it develops the power to draw towards itself other things of similar nature. (Malfuzat [English], Vol. 2, pp. 79-80)

“Wearing new clothes or enjoying good food is not the true essence of joy. Rather, real happiness lies in renewing our resolve to uphold the good deeds that Allah the Almighty enabled us to perform. Our joy will only be genuine if we remain steadfast in this commitment. Our true Eid will be when we sustain these virtues, continuously progressing forward in righteousness, in accordance with our abilities.”

Huzooraa said if we fail to uphold this commitment, then the joy we experience today on Eid will be merely fleeting, leaving no lasting impact on our spiritual lives. Eating, drinking, and simply going through life hold no real significance –for even worldly people live in the same manner, and even animals fulfill these basic needs. Such things are not worthy of mention; true significance lies in sustaining the righteousness we cultivated during Ramadan.

Hazrat Amirul Momineenaa said:

“A believer – and a true Ahmadi –benefits only when they undergo a pure transformation within themselves and firmly resolve to make these righteous changes a permanent part of their lives. Otherwise, there will be no difference between an Ahmadi and a non-Ahmadi.”

The Promised Messiahas stated:

“If no transformation is taking place within you, then what distinguishes you from others? In such a case, you are committing a double sin: first, the sin of breaking your pledge, and second, the sin of failing to reform yourself.”

Therefore, on this day, we must reflect on whether we truly find ourselves prepared to fulfill this commitment. Are we sincerely striving to uphold the promises we have made to Allah the Almighty?

Huzooraa said:

“The true objective should be that Eidul-Fitr serves as a testament that, through a month of fasting, we have found God. And when one attains nearness to God, progress in righteousness must follow.”

Hazrat Amirul Momineenaa said that Eid is not merely a day of joy; it is also a day of reflection. On regular days, five daily prayers are obligatory upon us, yet on Eid, we offer six prayers. Thus, this day itself serves as a reminder to advance towards Allah. We must recognise that, in addition to celebrating, this day also comes with the responsibility of fulfilling acts of worship. This should instill in us the lifelong remembrance that on this day, we pledged to elevate our standards of righteousness. We resolved to walk in obedience to Allah’s commandments while also fulfilling the rights of His creation, for serving humanity is, in itself, a form of worship.

Hazrat Musleh-e-Maudra once gave an example of a person who claims to have found God but remains content with superficial aspects. Such a person is like a madman who does not understand the value of diamonds, jewels, or money. Instead, he considers anything that shines – such as glass shards or polished stones – to be precious. True appreciation can only come to one who recognises the worth of real diamonds and genuine gems. The same principle applies to spirituality: only one who understands the essence of true worship and righteousness can be called a true believer.

Hazrat Amirul Momineenaa said to attain such recognition; a person must develop a strong connection with Allah the Almighty. This enables them to refine themselves into a radiant jewel – one that Allah is pleased with. Otherwise, there is little difference between a madman and someone who makes no effort to seek the pleasure of Allah.

He said:

“For a worldly person, the accumulation of wealth is life’s ultimate goal. Observing the world, we see that many have made material wealth their deity and dedicate their entire existence to its pursuit. A financial loss can drive them to despair and even madness.”

Huzooraa recalled an incident from his time in Ghana. There was a man who was mentally impaired – perhaps due to some worldly loss, as is often the case. His behavior suggested that he had once suffered a financial setback, for he was obsessed with accumulating wealth. He constantly begged for money but refused to accept coins, insisting instead on receiving banknotes. One day, he approached us as usual, and we called him over to offer him some money. To our surprise, he declined, saying, “I do not need money today; I have become very wealthy.” When we looked at what he considered his great wealth, we found that he had cut cigarette boxes into small pieces, stacking them into a thick bundle, believing it to be a pile of banknotes. In his mind, he had acquired immense riches and, therefore, needed nothing more.

Hazrat Musleh-e-Maud’sra example perfectly illustrates this point. Just as a deluded person mistakes worthless scraps for real wealth, someone who rejoices in superficial achievements without true spiritual progress is equally misguided. Such a person is no different from someone who is mentally impaired.

Huzooraa explained that the true joy of a believer lies in attaining nearness to God and securing genuine spiritual wealth – not in mistaking cardboard scraps, glass pieces, or pebbles for priceless jewels.

Hazrat Amirul Momineenaa said:

“If we have truly gained something from this experience [of Ramadan], then it should lead us to develop a deep connection with God. The real expression of celebrating Eid with true joy lies in the recognition that we have indeed attained this nearness to Him.”

The Holy Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said that Allah the Almighty experiences immense joy when His servants walk on the path of righteousness. He gave the example of a man who loses his laden camel in the desert. After tirelessly searching for it, he finally gives up, exhausted, and lies down to rest. In this state of despair, he falls asleep. Upon waking, he finds his camel standing right before him. The happiness he feels in that moment is immense. Yet, Allah the Almighty experiences even greater joy when His servant turns back to Him in repentance and strives to attain His nearness.

Similarly, the Holy Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, also stated that just as a mother rejoices upon finding her lost child, Allah the Almighty is overjoyed when a person returns to Him.

Hazrat Amirul Momineenaa highlighted that during Ramadan, those among us who sincerely strove to please Allah and sought to attain Him will continue to receive His grace and blessings, as He has promised.

The Promised Messiahas has stated that while Eid is indeed a blessed day, there is another day even more blessed than this. Unfortunately, people neither seek it nor anticipate it as they should. Had they truly understood its blessings, they would value it and consider it a great bounty. Which day is even greater than Jumu‘ah and the two Eids? It is the day of a person’s sincere repentance – the day that surpasses all other celebrations.

The Promised Messiahas further stated that true repentance must be accompanied by genuine purification. One must completely rid themselves of all forms of impurity and filth. Mere verbal repentance or repetitive words hold no benefit.

Thus, our celebration of Eid should be accompanied by the reflection that during Ramadan, we abstained from many evils and adopted virtues, humbling ourselves in complete devotion to Allah. The true Eid for us was the day we sought refuge in Him.

Huzooraa said that today, in accordance with His command, we are celebrating this joy collectively. However, if a spark of divine love is ignited in a person’s heart through sincere repentance, it will expand into a radiant light, illuminating the heart and protecting one from sin. Gradually, all of their actions and deeds will be carried out solely for the pleasure of Allah. When a person reaches this state, their surroundings are also positively affected – their spouse, children, and those around them benefit. This, in turn, fosters a peaceful and spiritually uplifting environment. And this is precisely the purpose of human creation as defined by Allah the Almighty.

May Allah enable us to fulfil this purpose. May we become those who establish prayer with sincerity. Huzooraa advised that if we previously attended mosques for Tahajjud and Tarawih prayers during Ramadan, then at the very least, we should now make an effort to continue offering nawafil prayers and Tahajjud at home. We should also be willing to spend in the way of Allah, uphold the rights of His creation, work towards resolving disputes, and maintain the virtuous habits we developed during Ramadan.

Hazrat Amirul Momineenaa said that let us strive to strengthen all our relationships –whether between in-laws, siblings, friends, or any other social connections – so that Allah may be pleased with us. When He sees that we are acting for His sake, He will fulfil our needs beyond measure.

Let us continue to pray for all Ahmadis, that Allah may envelop them in His grace. There are many Ahmadis across the world who are suffering unjust persecution, such as in Pakistan, where they are deprived even

of their right to offer Eid prayers freely. May Allah grant them the opportunity to experience true Eid, allowing them both to develop a closer relationship with Him and to celebrate outwardly in peace. May He enable them to worship freely and fulfil the rights of others. May they continue to attract His blessings. Many Ahmadis, out of fear, were forced to change their prayer locations and schedules for Eid today. In some places, such as Karachi, Ahmadis were even prevented from offering prayers. Rather than stopping the aggressors, authorities instead locked our mosques. May Allah swiftly hold such opponents accountable.

Let us also pray for those who are ill. May Allah grant them health and shower them with His mercy and blessings.

Huzooraa said that we should also remember in our prayers those who make sacrifices for the sake of humanity, whether through financial means or other forms of service. May Allah bless them abundantly. Similarly, may He bestow His immense grace upon those who sacrifice their wealth for the Jamaat and for the propagation of Islam.

Let us pray for the children of martyrs, that Allah may strengthen their faith and continue granting them the blessings earned by their forebears’ sacrifices.

Hazrat Amirul Momineenaa said, “We should also pray for those who have dedicated their lives to the service of Islam. May Allah accept their devotion and enable them to truly live as waqifeen (life devotees) and serve the faith with sincerity.”

Huzooraa also drew our attention to remember the wider Muslim Ummah in our prayers. They are currently facing great hardships, as the forces of falsehood are exerting all their power to harm them. However, many Muslims themselves are weak in faith. May Allah strengthen their faith so they may escape these forces of Dajjal. The only true solution for them is to turn towards Allah. May He grant them the wisdom to recognise and accept the Promised Messiahas, whom He has sent in this era, so that they may attain true happiness.

Hazrat Amirul Momineenaa said:

“We must also pray for those imprisoned in the path of Allah, that He may grant them freedom. May He thwart the schemes of their enemies who seek to strip them of their joy. May He continue to shower us with His grace and blessings so that we may experience true Eid in the most meaningful sense.”

Towards the end, Huzooraa led the congregation in silent prayer, then conveyed ‘Eid Mubarak’ to Ahmadis across the world.

My journey of memorising the Holy Quran

coming to Jamia. The best book to learn Arabic is the Book of God. How nice is it to commit it to memory?

Let’s be clear: memorising the Holy Quran is not for the faint of heart. It requires dedication, mental discipline and tenacity that would make even many diligent students think twice.

As a student of Jamia, I am already on a remarkable journey – one that weaves together the pursuit of knowledge with the sanctity of faith. On top of this, I embarked on another quest: memorising the Holy Quran, which requires both divine grace and human determination.

The task before me was daunting, with challenges that tested the limits of my resolve. Despite disruption and unforeseen circumstances, by the grace of Allah, my enthusiasm remained unshakeable, for the support I found in this endeavour was unparalleled.

A lot of things motivated me to memorise the Holy Quran. From the spiritual benefits of the Holy Quran – like the reward for each letter while reciting the Holy Quran is ten – to the revelation of the Promised Messiahas that “all good is contained in the Quran.” (Noah’s Ark, p. 44)

Understanding the Arabic language also motivated me to memorise the Holy Quran because I was a student of Arabic before

My methods

I used the basic method of memorisation; I sat alone to avoid distractions, and most times, I memorised at night too. I would repeat a particular portion several times and then go from one verse to the other until I could recite it offhand. When I was fluent, I would recite the portion in my nawafil [supererogatory prayers], as this is a great way to revise the Holy Quran.

I would also recite to my tutor, another student, who would listen to my recitation. Sometimes, to aid the memorisation, I would check the meaning of the verses from the Holy Quran. This helped a lot. Although I understand Arabic, this made me feel very connected to the subjects discussed in that particular portion. At times, I would go further by checking the Five-Volume Commentary for more clarity and understanding.

If not for the help of Allah the Almighty and the regular prayers and guidance of our beloved Khalifa, this dream might not have been fulfilled. I tried to pray Tahajjud [pre-dawn voluntary prayers] regularly, asking Allah to make this task easier for me. I also wrote letters to Hazrat Mirza Masroor Ahmad, Khalifatul Masih Vaa, seeking his prayers. Anytime I received his replies, I was

Jamaat-e-Ahmadiyya Lesotho distributes food during drought crisis

elated because they uplifted and propelled me forward.

By the grace of Allah, I memorised the entire Holy Quran in 11 months, finishing on 27 December 2019. May Allah abundantly reward all those who helped me along the way.

The benefits

I firmly believe that those who commit the Holy Quran to memory are bestowed with extraordinary brilliance. Alhamdulillah, I am a witness to this favour. I feel as though the Holy Quran opened my heart and gave me a lot of insight. Academically, I got better with retention. I can mostly memorise anything, provided I can read it. All this is the special grace of Allah. The Holy Quran is not just a book to be memorised but a key to unlocking a treasure trove of wisdom and knowledge.

The Holy Quran helped me shape my life morally as well, because being the word of God, I know injunctions first-hand. It also improved my Arabic. It is a joyful thing that I have completed. I feel accomplished, even though I have another challenge ahead, which is a revision of the Holy Quran.

This is a lifetime duty. Every day is a battle against the greatest enemy of memorisation: forgetfulness. No one wants to forget what he had memorised after much toil. To keep it flowing, revision is very necessary.

activities and cooperate in different sectors of the country and expressed his desire to continue such works in the future. He said, “Amazingly beautiful and blessings upon your Jamaat.”

The path ahead

Reflecting on my journey, I have learnt that memorising the Holy Quran is not just about retaining words; it’s about embodying the divine message in every aspect of your life. And when you finally reach the end, when you’ve committed every verse to heart, you don’t just close the book and call it a day.

No, that’s when the real work begins – the work of living out the Holy Quran. Because, let’s face it, anyone can memorise words, but to live by them? Now that’s a story worth telling, a journey worth every step, every verse, every chapter of this divine scripture.

Anyone can consider memorising the Holy Quran; it is certainly not impossible. You’ll need to go the extra mile to achieve this. Be slow and steady, have a goal, use the easiest method, and most importantly, pray for your success. Don’t forget to write to Hazrat Khalifatul Masihaa for prayers. Always revise, and this is very important, the Holy Prophetsa said:

Jamaat-e-Ahmadiyya Lesotho distributed food supplies to a hundred needy families on 8 March 2025. The country is currently facing a mini-drought due to untimely rains. This has also led to a significant increase in the prices of commodities and is making it difficult for low-income earners to support their families. The Jamaat Lesotho participated in this charity event during the blessed month of Ramadan. The Minister of Law and Justice of Lesotho, Honourable Richard Ramoletsi, was the chief guest at the event that was sponsored by the Jamaat and the government agency Disaster Management Authority. Essential

commodities were purchased from the country’s capital, Maseru, for this distribution. The stuff can be used by a family of five people for one and a half to two months with ease.

To organise this programme, a meeting was held with the Honourable Minister of Law and Justice in his office. He was informed about this programme and with his permission, it was organised. During the meeting, the Ahmadiyya Muslim Jamaat and its charity work were introduced to him.

The programme was attended by various distinguished guests, including the D.C., A.C. Chief of the area, Member of Parliament and Councillor. My humble self spoke about Islam’s message of peace. The Honourable Minister thanked the Jamaat and requested to continue these beneficial

Similarly, the Holy Prophetsa stated:

“No man recites the Quran, then forgets it, but will meet Allah on the Day of Judgment in a maimed condition (or empty-handed, or with no excuse).” (Sunan Abi Dawud, Kitab al-witr, Bab at-tashdid fi man hafiza al-Qur’an thumma nasiya-hu, Hadith 1474)

May Allah make it easier for everyone striving to achieve this.

The Promised Messiah’s poem in defence of Islam and the Quran

Ata-ul-Haye Nasir

Ahmadiyya Archive & Research Centre

In one of his poems, Hazrat Mirza Ghulam Ahmadas of Qadian, the Promised Messiah and Mahdi, stated:

“Life-giving is the goblet of Ahmadsa; How dear is the name Ahmadsa. There

may be a hundred thousand Prophets, but I swear by God that; The greatest of all in rank is Ahmadsa. I have eaten the fruit of the orchard of Ahmadsa; My garden is the word of Ahmadsa. Speak no more of Ibn Maryam [the son of Mary]; Superior to him is Ghulam-e-Ahmad [the servant of Ahmadsa].” (Defence Against the Plague & A Criterion for the Elect of God [Dafi‘ul-Bala’i wa Mi‘yaru Ahlil-Istifa’], p. 36)

The opponents of the Promised Messiahas often raise objections on his poetry. In relation to this poem, in particular, they mainly raise two baseless allegations:

1) Mirza Sahib has declared himself superior to all other Prophets, including the Holy Prophet Muhammadsa

2) Mirza Sahib has disrespected Jesusas

However, they fail to realise that this particular poem was written in defence of Islam, the Holy Prophet Muhammadsa and the Holy Quran, with the objective of proving Islam’s superiority over all other religions. As for the alleged “disrespect” of Jesusas in the last couplet, they do not understand that here the Promised Messiahas is telling the

opponents to shun the idea of the physical descension of Jesus Son of Mary, since the one who was prophesied to come in the Latter-Days has already come, i.e., Ghulame-Ahmad, meaning the true servant of the Holy Prophet Muhammadsa

The opponents fail to comprehend that just before these couplets, Huzooras mentioned one of his revelations and wrote:

“This [revelation] indicates that the Christians had gone on raising a clamour that the Messiah too, in his nearness to God and eminence of person, was unique and without partner. Now, God says, look here, I will create his match, who shall in fact be superior to him and his name is ‘Ghulam Ahmad’, meaning, the servant of Ahmadsaw [i.e. the Holy Prophet Muhammadsaw].” (Ibid., p. 36)

The background of this poem

This poem of the Promised Messiahas is part of one of his ishtiharat (tracts), dated 23 April 1902, titled “Aik shakhs Saakin Jammu Charagh Din Naam ki Nisbat Apni Tamaam Jamaat ko aik Aam Ittilaa” (literally, “A general notice to my entire Jamaat concerning a resident of Jammu named Charagh Din”).

In the beginning of this ishtihar, Huzooras stated:

“The person in question has published perhaps one or two announcements concerning the plague after claiming to support my Movement and stating that he belonged to the Ahmadiyya Community as he had taken bai‘at. Portions of these

announcements were briefly read out to me, but I had not yet heard the objectionable part. Thus, I consented to their publication believing this to be of no harm. Regrettably, however, because of the number of people with me at the time and other distractions, I was unable to listen to certain dangerous remarks and inappropriate claims contained within the footnotes. Out of goodwill, permission for the publication of these announcements was granted.

“Now, when another of Charagh Din’s essays was read out last evening, it came to light that this essay was dangerous and noxious, even pernicious to Islam and was overflowing with senseless and false ideas from beginning to end. In it, he writes that not only is he a Rasul [Messenger], but a Messenger with great resolve. Moreover, he writes that his mission is to bring about peace between Christians and Muslims, and reconcile the mutual differences between the Quran and the Gospel; he would do all of this as a disciple of ibn Maryam [the son of Mary] and be called a Rasul

“As everyone is aware, the Holy Quran has never claimed that it would reconcile with the Gospel or the Torah. In fact, it declares that these books have been subjected to interpolation and alteration and that they are defective and imperfect. [I have perfected your religion for you’ (Surah al-Ma’idah, Ch. 5: V. 4)]. It is our belief that the Gospel, the Torah, and other similar books bear no value in comparison

Faith, fasting and fighting cancer: What recent studies reveal

Nusrat Jahan Idrees

researcher in the field of oncology

For Muslims around the world, fasting during Ramadan is an act of devotion, selfdiscipline and spiritual purification. But beyond its religious significance, fasting has long been associated with numerous health benefits, from detoxification and improved gut health to metabolic regulation and enhanced immunity.

Now, emerging research is uncovering yet another profound advantage – fasting’s potential role in cancer prevention and treatment.

Studies show that fasting can strengthen the body’s natural defences, enhance the effectiveness of cancer therapies and reduce disease risk. As science delves deeper into the mechanisms of fasting, it is reaffirming what Islamic teachings have long emphasised – moderation, self-restraint and mindful eating are essential for overall well-being.

Can fasting enhance chemotherapy?

A recent study published in Nature Cancer (2024) suggests that fasting-mimicking diets (FMDs) can protect healthy cells from the harsh effects of chemotherapy while making cancer cells more susceptible to treatment. The study found that cancer patients who followed an FMD before chemotherapy reported fewer side effects, including nausea and fatigue, compared to those who did not fast. (Nature Cancer, 2024)

Fasting and immunotherapy:

Boosting the body’s natural defences

Another ground-breaking study found that fasting enhances the activity of natural killer (NK) cells, which play a crucial role in the immune system’s fight against cancer. By shifting metabolism, fasting makes these

to the Holy Quran and that they are indeed imperfect, interpolated, and altered. All good is found in the Holy Quran, as is intimated in the following revelation, which was recorded twenty-two years ago in Barahin-e-Ahmadiyya

“See page 511 of Barahin-e-Ahmadiyya [Barahin-e-Ahmadiyya (English), Part 4, Sub-Footnote Number Three, p. 391]

This means: ‘Say to them, “See that I am a man just like yourselves; I have received the revelation that God is One, He has no partner, and all good is comprehended in the Quran.” Good-natured people understand the truth of this matter.’

“So, what book should we seek besides the Quran. How can we consider it to be incomplete? God has told me that the Christian faith has died completely, and the Gospel is a lifeless and incomplete word. Can there be any comparison between that which is dead and that which is alive. We cannot reconcile with Christianity in any way as it is entirely worthless and false. Today, there is no book that exists beneath the heavens other than the Holy Quran.”

(Defence Against the Plague & A Criterion for the Elect of God [Dafi‘ul-Bala’i wa Mi‘yaru Ahlil-Istifa’], pp. 33-35)

“In the Holy Quran God says that the ill [doctrines] of Christianity would wellnigh cause the earth to burst thereat and the heavens to break into pieces. How can we seek reconciliation with this [belief]? Furthermore, despite his utter lack of sense, understanding, and piety, Charagh Din claims to be a Messenger of Allah and thereby ridicules the system of God and belittles the station of Messengers and Prophets. Owing to his uncultivated intellect he has failed to grasp that although in earlier times certain Messengers were sent to support others in their very lifetimes – as was the case with Harun [Aaron] who was raised alongside Hadrat Musa [Moses] – KhatamulAnbiya’ [the Seal of the Prophets] and the Khatamul-Auliya’ [the Seal of the Auliya’] are exempt from this practice. Just as no one was divinely commissioned alongside the Holy Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, or raised as a Messenger in his time, and all of his Companions followed one guide, similarly, at this time, everyone follows one guide; no one else has the right to claim that he is, God forbid, a Messenger.

NK cells more effective at identifying and eliminating tumours (Immunity, 2024)

The Ramadan effect: Does Islamic fasting reduce cancer risk?

A 2024 study published in The Lancet Diabetes & Endocrinology suggests that prolonged intermittent fasting, such as during Ramadan, reduces metabolic disorders linked to cancer. The study tracked fasting participants over a decade and found lower rates of obesity, insulin resistance, and diabetes – conditions that significantly increase cancer risk. (The Lancet Diabetes & Endocrinology, 2024)

This aligns with Islamic principles of fasting not just as an act of worship, but also as a means of maintaining good health. It reinforces the hadith: “Fast and you shall be healthy.” (Al-Tabarani, al-Mu’jam al-Awsat, Hadith 8312)

How fasting affects tumour microenvironments

A 2024 study explored how fasting alters the tumour microenvironment, making it less favourable for cancer growth. Researchers found that breast cancer patients who followed fasting protocols had better responses to Sorafenib, a cancer drug, due to increased oxidative stress on cancer cells (Cell Oncology, 2024)

This further supports the idea that fasting works as an adjunct therapy rather than a standalone cure. In the Islamic tradition, fasting is seen as a means of purification, physically and spiritually, which may extend to the body’s ability to fight disease.

Bridging faith and science

It’s fascinating how an ancient religious practice aligns with modern medical advancements. While fasting remains a deeply spiritual experience, its scientifically supported health benefits make it even more

This was followed by the poem mentioned at the beginning of this article. In regards to these couplets, Huzooras further stated:

“These verses are not mere poetic caprice; they are an exposition of truth, and if evidence does not establish that I have been granted greater support than the Masih ibn Maryam [Messiah son of Mary], then I am a liar. God has supported me, not for my own sake, but for the sake of the Prophet who has been wronged [i.e. Muhammadsa].”

(Ibid., pp. 36-37)

Huzooras further wrote:

“Now just consider for a moment how poles apart we are from the Christians. They declare that holy person to be a liar whom we consider to be the paragon of all creation. To achieve any reconciliation both parties must first strike a compromise. But given the extent to which our religion and our Book consider the religion of Christianity utterly foul and unholy, as indeed it is, how then can there be any agreement between us. In view of this vast religious divide there really can be no room for compromise. Rather, the only end is that false creeds are vanquished, and the virtuous people of the world accept the truth and then will the world come to an end. [...]

“What kind of an impure prophethood is this, to which Charagh Din has made a claim? How shameful that a person who proclaims to be my follower can make the reviled claim that he is a Messenger sent by the Masih ibn Maryam in order to reconcile between these two religions.

[The curse of Allah be upon the disbelievers].

remarkable. Whether for faith, longevity or cancer prevention, fasting is a timeless remedy for both the body and the soul.

As science continues to explore fasting’s full potential, one thing is clear: the wisdom

“I have not come accompanied by two angels alone, but with thousands. In the sight of God, praiseworthy are those who have long assisted me for years on end. In my view and in the estimation of God their help has proven true. But what of Charagh Din’s help? His presence and absence have made no difference at all. This organised effort on my part has been ongoing for almost thirty years now, whereas he has sprung forth only a few months ago. I cannot recognise his appearance well enough to even identify him. He has not lived in my company for any length of time. I cannot imagine what service he might render me. Will he assist me in manifesting the sign of writing Arabic prose or in the exposition of hidden Quranic truths. Will he aid me in the intricate discussions I engage in for the advancement of natural and philosophical argumentation that rebut the Christians and followers of other religions? I know that he is bereft of all these areas of knowledge. The error of his nafs-e-’ammarah [self that incites to evil] has made him conceited. So from this day forth he is cut off from my Community, until he publishes a detailed confession of repentance, and forever disavows the foul ministry to which he has made a claim.

“How lamentable that the unfounded manner in which he has exalted himself has led him to defame my true helpers, and confer upon the repugnant faith of the Christians a status of parity with Islam. I care not for such people, for they can neither harm nor help me.” (Ibid., pp. 37-39)

Conclusion

In short, this is another example of the true purpose behind the Promised Messiah’sas usage of poetry. Unfortunately, his opponents raise objections over his poetry just for the sake of opposing him and fail to realise why and where he used this method in his writings.

of fasting, as taught in Islam, was ahead of its time. The next time you fast, know that you’re not just cleansing your soul – you’re empowering your body against disease.

Effects of screen time on children and Islamic perspectives

Short attention spans & an alarming study

Parents today often face the challenge of dealing with children who struggle to concentrate. Smartphones, tablets and televisions are everywhere, constantly providing distractions. Many families wonder: How does too much screen time affect the development of our children? This article explains what a study says about this issue and how Islam helps parents set wise rules to ensure their children grow up healthy.

Children naturally have a short attention span, but today there are more distractions than ever before. Phones beep, televisions run in the background and tablets are always within reach. These stimuli can overwhelm children. Parents often notice

that their children become more restless, get bored quickly and have little interest in books or conversations. This is particularly important for most Muslim families who, in accordance with Islamic teachings, value proper upbringing.

A study published in 2024 in the journal Early Child Development and Care was conducted by a team led by Shujin Zhou from Shanghai Normal University and Yan Li. This cross-sectional study involved 571 mothers of preschool children aged 3 to 6 years from seven public kindergartens in Shanghai, China. The parents reported how much time their children spent in front of screens each day. The results are alarming: More than one hour of screen time per day can cause problems. The children exhibited more hyperactivity, tantrums, and difficulties interacting with others. Researcher Shujin Zhou explains: “Videos and games overstimulate the children’s brains, leading to poor sleep and

Jamaat-e-Ahmadiyya hosts peace symposium in Petauke, Zambia

Bilal Ahmed Missionary, Zambia

Jamaat-e-Ahmadiyya Petauke, Zambia, organised a Peace Symposium with the theme “Love, Justice and Peace: A Universal Faith Message”, on 15 February 2025.

The event started with a recitation from the Holy Quran, followed by a welcoming remark by my humble self and several speeches by dignitaries. The honourable senior chief Kalindawalo sent a representative who commended the efforts of the Jamaat towards peace through the provision of social needs for humanity, such

as education, health, water reticulation and many other social amenities. The District Education Board Secretary (DEBS) delivered a speech and appreciated the Jamaat for the initiative of quality education provision by opening doors to the less privileged children who have accessed quality education through the secondary schools that the mission has managed to open in three provinces of Zambia. The Honourable District Commissioner of Petauke delivered a speech and applauded the approach of coordinating and uniting interfaith harmony in her district and appreciated the Jamaat for such an event. The former Member of Parliament

restlessness.”

The gift of sleep

Sleep is essential for children, as during sleep, the brain processes what they have learned during the day – language, social rules, or movement. Poor sleep makes children unfocused and irritable, which affects their learning and behavior. Islam views sleep as a gift from Allah. The Quran states: “And We made your sleep for rest” (Surah an-Naba’, Ch.78: V.10). Good sleep is a treasure that parents should protect – for the health and faith of their children.

Children who spend long hours in front of screens are often more restless. Fast-paced cartoons with loud sounds overwhelm them. They find it difficult to calm down, become angry more quickly, or get into more arguments. When they are accustomed to constant stimulation, they get bored without screens – a problem that parents can address with wise rules.

A solution

Islam teaches moderation in all things. The Holy Quran says: “We have made you a middle nation” (Surah al-Baqarah, Ch.2: V.144). Even though there are no direct rules for mobile phones, the responsibility lies with the parents.

The Prophet Muhammadsa said: “Everyone of you is a guardian and is responsible for his charges:” (Sahih alBukhari, Hadith 7138)

Parents should set clear boundaries, such as fixed screen times or a ban before bedtime, to protect their children. Evening screen time disrupts sleep. The bright light from devices blocks the sleep hormone melatonin. Children find it harder to fall asleep and are tired and impatient the next day. This affects their concentration and behavior – something that parents can avoid

and aspiring candidate, Mr Severian Lungu, also delivered a speech in which he expressed his wish to learn from the Jamaat the ways to promote and spread peace in our societies.

In the end, the President and Missionaryin-Charge of Jamaat-e-Ahmadiyya Zambia, Muhammad Javed Sahib, delivered a speech and explained the teachings of Islam about peace, love, harmony and brotherhood. The event ended with a silent prayer. The peace symposium was covered by the media and representatives from two radio stations (Radio Explorer, Radio Pasme) were also in attendance and later broadcast the event on their respective stations. Copies of the Holy Quran and the book World Crisis and the Pathway to Peace were given to all dignitaries. The total attendance of guests was 115.

by banning media in the evening. Here are the recommended screen times based on age:

Age (in years) | recommendation

0–3: Ideally no screen media, at most 30 minutes of audio media, regular viewing and reading of books.

3–6: At most 30 minutes in front of a screen, at most 45 minutes of audio media, regular viewing and reading of books.

6–9: At most 45–60 minutes of screen media, at most 60 minutes of audio media, regular reading or being read to.

9–12: At most 45–60 minutes per day.

12–16: At most 1–2 hours per day.

16–18: Set common rules for screen media use, with 2 hours per day as a guideline.

Now, I would like to mention some tips. Fixed bedtimes and calming rituals help children settle down. Therefore, you could: Reading aloud: A positive story before bedtime calms the children and stimulates their imagination and way of thinking. Stories convey values and create a soothing atmosphere.

Praying: Evening prayers or reciting Surahs like al-Ikhlas, al-Falaq, and an-Nas provide comfort and are a wonderful way to spiritually close the day. These Surahs offer protection and bring peace.

Conversations: Talking about the day strengthens the bond between parents and children and helps process the day’s emotions. A calm conversation before bed gives the children a sense of security and affection.

Screen alternatives

Regarding the question of what alternatives there are to screens, I would like to emphasise that parents should invest their time. Young children need a lot of attention and time. In this situation, parents should change their mindset and recognise that children need their time.

Shared activities are a great alternative to screens. Time with the family is more valuable than digital distractions. Parents can engage in activities such as playing, crafting, role-playing, or board games, which are fun and strengthen social skills. Children should also help around the house. They learn responsibility when they participate. Alternatively, one can visit relatives or go to the playground. There are many activities available, but the willingness to sacrifice lies with the parents. They must dedicate their attention and time to their children.

It is also very important that children learn by imitation. When parents are constantly on their phones, children want to do the same. Islam encourages parents to be role models (Surah as-Saff, Ch.61: V.34). During meals or conversations, phones should be put away. This shows children that real relationships are more important than screens.

Excessive screen time harms children’s concentration, sleep, and behavior. Islam provides parents with clear values such as moderation and responsibility to protect their children. With clear rules, shared activities, and setting a good example, children can grow up healthy – in balance between technology and real life.

Defending the honour of Prophet Muhammad, 1925

London

Recent letters from abroad reveal that the Ahmadiyya Mission House [in London] has been newly renovated and beautifully decorated. The building is now not only clean and well-maintained but also wellsuited for the worship of Allah the Almighty. The missionaries are working with great dedication and diligence.

Holland

Maulvi Abdul Rahim Sahib Dard[ra] MA has received an invitation from Holland to deliver lectures on Islam. Our newly converted sister, Mrs Budd, who serves as an honorary missionary of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Jamaat in Holland, is actively organising these lectures.

The Review of Religions

The Review of Religions is being edited with great care and effort, and the March issue has already been published. Members of the Conference of Religions have shown special interest in our magazine. The newspapers of England have published numerous forceful and continuous articles regarding the martyrs of Kabul. Our missionaries have engaged in significant dialogues, which have also been reported in the press.

The people of Europe are familiar with the barbarity of the Afghan maulvis, yet they are not fully aware of the educated ignoramuses of India, such as the Zamindar and Jamiat [Ulama-e-Hind]. When [the people of Europe] find out about this, the true missionaries of Islam will inevitably face severe objections and will be compelled to declare that such Muslims can no longer be considered true Muslims.

Protest

At the time of dispatching the last mail from London, it was resolved that a protest meeting would be held in response to the barbaric actions of the Kabul government.

Africa

From East Africa comes the glad news that the Nairobi Jamaat has purchased a hall, spending several thousand rupees, as a memorial to the martyrs of Kabul.

The Jamaat in West Africa is progressing peacefully. Hakim Fazl-ur-Rahman Sahib, who had travelled to London to visit Hazrat Khalifatul Masih II[ra], has safely returned to his headquarters at Saltpond in the Gold Coast [now Ghana]. He is engaged in the moral training and education of Fante Land Jamaat and the Talim-ul-Islam School at Saltpond. There is a proposal under consideration to purchase one acre of land for the construction of a proper school building. Although the land is extremely expensive – three times the normal rate per

square foot – the Jamaat is determined to complete the mission house and the school, as our work in Africa is largely connected with education and moral training.

Since the Prince of Wales is expected to visit Lagos, the capital of Nigeria, in April, the Jamaat is earnestly engaged in both the completion of the Talim-ul-Islam School in Lagos and in preparing to welcome the prince with due honour.

From the markaz of the Jamaat, Hazrat Khalifatul Masih [IIra] has graciously approved a grant of £200 for the construction of the school building.

Australia

Sufi Hasan Musa Khan, the honorary missionary of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Jamaat in Perth, Australia, reports on his ongoing preaching efforts. In his latest letter, he mentions an incident where a company had used an English proverb in its advertisement, stating, “The mountain would not go to Muhammad, so Muhammad must perforce go the mountain.” The Ahmadi missionary strongly objected to this usage, after which the company issued an apology and assured that the phrase would no longer appear in their advertisements.

Sufi Sahib is now growing weak with age, and friends are requested to pray for his health. He is one of the old and devoted servants of the Jamaat. When he returned to India, Hazrat Khalifatul Masih Ira had advised him to go back to Australia and continue his preaching work.

India

By the grace of Allah, the Ahmadiyya Muslim Jamaat is steadily progressing in various parts of India. During the current month, some non-Ahmadi associations themselves felt the need to invite missionaries from the Ahmadiyya Headquarters, and their requests have been accepted. In certain regions, religious debates were held, and by

the support of Divine help, Ahmadi debaters were crowned with success and victory.

The debate at Batala

Although Batala is situated close to Qadian, it has, unfortunately, partaken very little from the spiritual fountain that flows nearby. However, on 24-25 March [1925], on the initiative of the respected Master Abdul Rahman Sahib BA (a new convert), who had accompanied the students for the university examination, a debate was arranged between Ahmadis and non-Ahmadis.

Three topics were debated:

1. The Life and Death of Jesus

2. The Possibility of Prophethood after the Holy Prophetsa

3. The Truthfulness of the Promised Messiahas

On behalf of the Ahmadis, [Hazrat] Maulvi Jalaluddin Shams [ra] (Maulvi Fazil) served as the debater, while Maulvi Abdul Qadir Sahib Deobandi represented the opposing side. The debate proceeded peacefully, and every intelligent listener could see that the arguments of Maulvi Shams Sahib were enlightening, strong, and decisive. The opposing party was left with nothing but an acknowledgment of their own weakness.

During the debate, the opposing scholar remarked that just as the Holy Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, was like a mirror – wherein Abu Jahl saw his own image and the Companions saw their noble reflection – so too are the writings of the Promised Messiahas. In them, non-Ahmadis see their own faces, while Ahmadis behold their own reflection.

On several occasions, the truth prevailed upon the tongues of the speakers, and by the grace of Allah, the people of Batala attentively listened to the arguments of Ahmadiyyat and felt the weight of their own weakness.

Lantern lectures

I express my gratitude to Allah the Almighty that, just as Ahmadis and non-Ahmadis appreciated my general lectures, excellent preaching was also carried out among nonAhmadis through lantern-slide lectures in Jalandhar, Jammu, Sialkot, and Batala. When people witnessed the message of the Promised Messiahas reaching both white and black races, and extending to the corners of the earth – along with the journey of Hazrat Khalifatul Masih II[ra] to London, the laying of the foundation of the London Mosque, and the symbolic descent at the Minarat-ulMasih – even those not affiliated with the Jamaat were deeply impressed.

Moreover, new slides were added, featuring the annual gatherings of Mecca, Medina, Constantinople, and Qadian, among others. Through these, non-Ahmadis were shown how our imam is the inheritor of the blessings of Masjid al-Haram and Masjid al-Aqsa, and the ghair muba‘ieen [those denied to perform bai‘at after the passing of the first Khalifa] were shown how the land of Qadian, filled with multitudes, bears testimony to its resemblance to the sacred precincts of the Holy Land. By the grace of God, this method of preaching has also proven effective.

Sumatra

Correspondence is ongoing with certain scholars [of Sumatra], and they are engaged in studying the literature of the Ahmadiyya Mulsim Jamaat.

Miscellaneous

Some brave Ahmadi missionaries are travelling to those regions of the world as well where the governments are not as peaceful as the British government.

Ramadhan: Faith, prayers and righteous deeds

After reciting the tashahhud, ta‘awwuz, and Surah al-Fatihah, Hazrat Khalifatul Masih Vaa stated:

After reciting the tashahhud, ta‘awwuz, and Surah al-Fatihah, Hazrat Khalifatul Masih Vaa recited verse 187 of Surah al-Baqarah:

Allah the Almighty says:

“And when My servants ask thee about Me, say: ‘I am near. I answer the prayer of the supplicant when he prays to Me. So they should hearken to Me and believe in Me, that they may follow the right way.’” (Ch.2: V. 187)

As the month of Ramadan begins, the immediate thought that arises in one’s heart is to pay more attention to the prayers, for this is the month of immense blessings. It is a time when supplications are accepted, which is why people generally turn towards the mosque more frequently. The attendance at mosques increases, whether it be for the Fajr or Isha prayers. On ordinary days, the attendance for Fajr, Maghrib and Isha prayers does not reach the level it does during Ramadan. This is, indeed, Allah the Almighty’s grace that, at least during these days, people are reminded to head towards the mosque and seek Allah the Almighty’s mercy and blessings.

One of the reasons for this is that Allah the Almighty says that during the days of Ramadan, He closes the doors of Hell, shackles Satan, and opens the doors of Paradise. (Sahih al-Bukhari, Kitab Bad AlKhalq, Hadith 3277)

This leads many to believe that worship

is only necessary during Ramadan, and that the prayers and acts of worship performed in this month alone will secure their forgiveness. This hadith is often repeatedly mentioned on non-Ahmadi Islamic channels and various other channels, even though this is a misconception.

Allah the Almighty has drawn our attention towards worship during Ramadan so that we make it a permanent part of our lives. If this does not happen, the worship performed in Ramadan alone will be of no avail. In fact, Allah will say, “You performed worship for one month only, but what did you do during the other eleven months?” Therefore, we must rid ourselves of the misguided belief that it is enough to only offer prayers and fill the mosques during Ramadan.

The Holy Prophetsa has said, “Whoever prays during the nights of Ramadan while fulfilling the requirements of faith and seeking reward, his past sins will be forgiven.” (Sahih al-Bukhari, Kitab assawm, Hadith 1901)

This indeed is His blessed declaration.

Now, one might think that when a person consistently strives to make good deeds a part of their daily life – paying attention to prayers, focusing on Tahajjud, offering nawafil – it will lead to greater devotion during Ramadan. Those who are committed to regular worship perform these virtues with this intention. However, some people mistakenly believe that merely waking up for prayers during the nights of Ramadan is sufficient.

Indeed, humans are prone to making mistakes, but Allah the Almighty is also extremely gracious and merciful, and He is Forgiving. Therefore, he has granted us this opportunity that if one has made mistakes in this regard during the past year, one can now renew their commitment and try to uphold it; that going forward, they will fulfill the rights of worshipping Allah the Almighty and they will perform all those virtuous deeds, which Allah the Almighty has commanded them to perform.

Therefore, a Muslim must especially remember that the worship prescribed by Allah the Almighty during Ramadan is meant to instil true guidance within them. And true guidance is not something to be developed for just one month; rather, it is something that should become a permanent part of one’s life. Allah the Almighty has stated that He repeatedly brings Ramadan as a reminder and as an expression of His mercy so that those who have strayed may once again remember their duties.

Both the rights due to Allah and the rights due to His creation should be remembered, and one should reflect on how to fulfil the rights due to Allah’s creation and the rights owed to Allah. When Allah the Almighty says:

“When My servants ask”, here, “My servants” refers to those who are lovers of Allah. Now, if someone is truly in love with another, they do not express their love for only one month while neglecting it for the remaining eleven months of the year. A true lover of Allah, a true servant of His, must continuously strive to uphold this responsibility which Allah the Almighty has commanded.

And if there have been shortcomings in the past eleven months, then one should make a special effort during these days to compensate for them and ensure that such shortcomings do not occur again. True lovers always obey their beloved in every matter.

In worldly love, people become attached to others who may have many flaws, and such relationships can sometimes bring harm or, at the very least, fail to provide any real benefit. However, in the love of Allah, there is nothing but gain – only benefit upon benefit – because He is the Source of all goodness, the One Who protects from all evil, and the One Who delivers from every hardship.

He says, “Ask from Me. If you pray to Me, I will respond to you.” And a true lover only seeks nearness to Allah.

Therefore, we should strive to seek nearness to Allah. In our worship during Ramadan, we should not only ask for worldly benefits but also pray to attain closeness to our Beloved.

We should supplicate to Allah, asking Him to grant us His nearness, the ability to offer prayers which are granted His acceptance, the blessing of His communion, and the acceptance of our fasts. When this happens, not only will we refrain from committing sin after Ramadan, but we will also continue to have the ability to do good deeds.

Allah the Almighty has repeatedly drawn attention in the Holy Quran to what the rights of God and the rights of His creation are and to strive to fulfil them.

The Promised Messiahas stated that there are seven hundred commandments in the Holy Quran. (Kashti-e-Nuh, Ruhani Khazain, Vol. 19, p. 26)

In Ramadan, special emphasis is placed on reading the Holy Quran, and when we read it, we should seek out the commandments that Allah the Almighty has given us. In fact, in one instance, the Promised Messiahas mentioned that there are even more than seven hundred commandments.

Thus, when we search for these commandments, we will strive to act upon them. And this is the true task of a sincere lover – to make every possible effort to follow the words of their beloved. Allah the Almighty says: “So they should hearken to Me and believe in Me, that they may follow the right way.” Perfect faith is to truly obey Allah and His Messengersa, as I mentioned earlier.

Allah the Almighty also commands that faith and good deeds go hand in hand. That is why this verse also states that they should respond to My call. This means that one must perform righteous deeds and remain steadfast in virtue. When one prays while engaged in worship, then Allah the Almighty says that He will become their friend, as He states elsewhere:

“Allah is the Friend of those who believe.” (Ch. 2: V. 258)

When Allah becomes a person’s friend, their faith and connection with Him will continue to grant them His nearness. And this nearness will continue to increase, and one will continue to progress in it. This closeness is not something that remains stagnant, and He will also listen to their prayers.

Therefore, during Ramadan, we must strive to attain this level [of nearness to Allah]. We must also reflect on the fact that if, after Ramadan, we regress from this state, if we fail to do justice to our worship as we did during Ramadan and do not continue our efforts to attain Allah’s closeness, then how can we expect Allah to remain our Friend? Allah the Almighty cannot remain our Wali [Friend].

Allah the Almighty has set certain conditions for the acceptance of prayers. The first and foremost condition is that one must truly become His servant – one must belong to Him with complete sincerity. Worship must be offered with absolute devotion, recognising Him as the sole source of all power. One must not create false gods in the form of worldly figures, nor should one, even unconsciously, turn to other insignificant people as deities for personal gain. Such actions would lead a person towards shirk [associating partners with Allah].

Just recently, some members from the Hifazat-e-Khas team in Germany visited, and they were asking how they could please their senior officers. I told them that whatever work they do, they should do it with the intention of pleasing Allah the Almighty.

If you strive to please Allah the Almighty, then He Himself will turn the attention of your officers in your favour, and they will work towards your well-being, treating you with kindness and compassion. However, the most important thing is to seek Allah

the Almighty’s mercy and compassion and to strive to follow His commandments.

Let us take the example of Hazrat Chaudhry Zafrulla Khan Sahibra and how, on one occasion, he expressed unease during an official meeting with the Queen in her royal residence. He was seated but kept checking his watch repeatedly.

When the officials inquired about the reason, he responded, “It is nearly time for my prayer, and the time for my worship is approaching. This is a command from Allah the Almighty that I must fulfil. I am feeling restless because I do not want to let this time slip; I do not want to miss it.” Upon hearing this, they arranged for him to offer his prayer. (Mahnamah Khalid, Rabwah, December 1985, January 1986, p. 89)

This is the courage and the true requirement of faith that every Ahmadi should possess. We share such examples, but we must also adopt these models in our lives.

Then the Holy Prophetsa has imparted countless teachings to direct our attention towards good deeds. There are countless hadiths, and the Promised Messiahas has fulfilled his duty as the true servant of the Holy Prophetsa in this era. He has guided us towards righteousness. Many of the conditions of bai‘at [oath of allegiance] highlight the importance of paying attention to the rights owed to Allah and the rights owed to His creation.

These are the things we should focus on, and when we do so, Allah the Almighty will become our Wali, our Friend, and He will listen to our prayers.

The Holy Prophetsa has said that Allah the Almighty listens to the prayers of those who do not show impatience. (Sahih Muslim, Kitab Al-Dhikr Wa Al-Dua, Hadith 6936)

And do not say, “I have prayed a lot, but Allah the Almighty does not listen.” Such thoughts are akin to disbelief and lead one away from faith. A believer must always avoid this.

Thus, we ought to focus our attention on these matters. Sometimes people write to me, saying they have prayed extensively. The first thing to understand is that their prayers were not offered to attain the nearness to God; rather, they prayed merely for their worldly objectives, turning towards Him only when worldly difficulties arose. If someone only seeks closeness to Allah the Almighty for solutions to worldly troubles, why should Allah the Almighty listen to them? A true friend is one who fulfils the rights of friendship even during times of ease. Such a friend listens, respects, and adheres to his friend’s words, and then he is also heard.

Always remember, we must not approach Allah the Almighty solely for personal, worldly objectives but genuinely strive to attain His nearness. When we do this, God-willing, He will hear and answer our prayers, for He Himself has promised:

“I answer the prayers of my servant.”

The Promised Messiahas states:

This is the essence of what the Promised Messiahas has stated. When one says “I prayed,” in fact first their prayers were offered solely when worldly needs arose. Such a person has not offered for the sake of their faith and its betterment, or for achieving closeness to God Almighty. If this pertains to a believer, who, on occasion, experiences that his prayers were not answered, then, as the Promised Messiahas stated that this relationship is like the bond of friendship. At times, a request is accepted, and at times, it is not. In cases where he does not accept a prayer, Allah the Almighty arranges something far better in return for His friend; He recompenses through alternative means for what He does not accept.

At another instance, the Promised Messiahas states:

“When a servant of God inquires about Him, seeking proof of His existence, the answer is simple: ‘I am very near.’ There is no need for grand arguments; ‘My existence can be comprehended by a means that is well within reach (My existence can very easily be proven). The proof is that when a supplicant calls upon Me, I hear him and grant him glad tidings of success through Divine revelation. Thus, he becomes firmly convinced not only of My existence but also of My omnipotence.’”

When Allah the Almighty listens, He responds as well. The Review of Religions has been holding “The God Summit” for many years now. They have held it from time to time, and it also took place this year. In this program, people have shared accounts of how Allah the Almighty accepted their prayers, and how, through the acceptance of their prayers, they became convinced about the existence of Allah the Almighty. However, there is one condition, as the Promised Messiahas states, “People must first adopt righteousness and a longing for God, so that He hears their call.” Allah the Almighty states that we must develop righteousness and a yearning for God, so that He may hear us.

The Promised Messiahas states that Allah the Almighty instructs us to first develop righteousness and a longing for God, then He will listen to us. He will not listen unconditionally. Thus, we must develop this state of righteousness and yearning for God to enable our voices to reach God Almighty.

Elaborating on the verse, “They must believe in Me”, the Promised Messiahas states:

“Before attaining perfect understanding, they must attest that God exists and He is the possessor of all power. Those who believe are granted true understanding (‘irfan).

“Allah the Almighty also states in this verse:

“‘They should hearken to Me and believe in Me.’ These words are directed toward those who are truly His servants (Allah is addressing His servants, those who are true believers).”

(Malfuzat, 1984, Vol. 3, p. 386)

“This relationship is like the bond of friendship. Sometimes a friend accepts his friend’s request, and at other times he persuades the friend to accept his. God interacts with us similarly. Even when it appears that God rejects a believer’s prayer, this rejection is ultimately for the believer’s own good.”

As I mentioned earlier, even if at times weakness arises, believers must strive to strengthen their faith by seeking closeness to God. Only then will their belief grow stronger, for God is the Possessor of all power. Seeing His servant striving to approach Him, God Himself nurtures the believer’s faith.

Then, the Promised Messiahas stated that such a believer is granted true understanding (‘irfan). When this state is achieved, Allah accepts his prayers and he begins to recognise the true reality of Allah the Almighty. In the case that Allah the Almighty does not accept a prayer, He grants the heart such comfort that a person will never come to the conclusion that God did not hear him. Instead, he will realize that Allah the Almighty will fulfil his needs through some other means.

The Promised Messiahas emphasized that one should yearn for God, fulfilling both the rights of Allah the Almighty and the rights of His creation. Only then does God promise to hear our prayers. Subsequently, believers must continually progress in faith and certainty, increasing steadily in spiritual insight, until they attain complete understanding (ma‘rifat-e-ta’ammah), which, as the Promised Messiahas states, will continue to grow. (Ayyam-e-Sulh, Ruhani Khazain, Vol. 14, pp. 260-261)

Regarding the Quranic injunction:

That is, to believe in the unseen, the Promised Messiahas provides a profound insight. At one place, he states:

“The Unseen (Ghaib) is also a name for God.” (Malfuzat, 2022, Vol. 10, p. 11)

Before praying, one must possess certainty that God exists, and that He embodies limitless attributes and absolute power. When you approach Him with this conviction, bow before Him, and supplicate to him, you will achieve true awareness and recognition of Him. You will witness clear signs of accepted prayers.

Indeed, by Allah the Almighty’s grace, many do witness these signs and share their experiences. As I mentioned earlier, many people shared their stories during “The God Summit”. These experiences strengthened their faith. It is insufficient to merely profess firm belief in Allah the Almighty verbally without acting upon His commandments. Efforts to offer prayers should not be limited to Ramadan. Mosques, which are filled with members during this time, should remain full throughout the year. By Allah the Almighty’s grace, Ahmadis give importance to prayers, yet any remaining weaknesses must be examined closely. Let this Ramadan elevate our standards of worship, bringing us closer to God Almighty so that we become His sincere servants, obedient to His commandments, resulting in the acceptance of our prayers.

Thus, in this Ramadan, let us pledge to rejuvenate our worship and pray to Allah the Almighty to grant us the strength to fulfil this pledge. Let us invest all our strength in realizing it. In doing so, whilst utilising all our strengths and efforts, we will develop such a close bond with Allah the Almighty that He Himself becomes our friend. Indeed, God has promised:

“I become the friend (Wali) of those who follow My commandments.”

There is a narration in which Hazrat Ibn ‘Umarra relates that the Holy Prophetsa said:

“For whomever among you the gate of prayer is opened, it is as though the doors of mercy have been opened for him. And of the things to seek from Allah the Almighty, the most beloved thing to ask for is peace and well-being.” (Tirmidhi, Kitab ad-da‘wat, Hadith 3548)

The Holy Prophetsa also said:

“Prayer is beneficial against the tribulation that has already descended and also against the tribulation that is yet to come. O servants of Allah, it is incumbent upon you to hold fast to prayer.”

Afflictions and hardships do not occur only during the days of Ramadan; rather, they arise at various times. Therefore, Allah the Almighty states that you should not limit your prayers to these days alone, nor should you pray only when you are in need and wish to ward off calamities. Instead, the Holy Prophetsa said that supplication also serves to protect against those difficulties that have not yet come but may arise at any time. Hence, you should remain constantly engaged in prayer and strive to enter the refuge of Allah the Almighty.

May Allah the Almighty protect us from the trials that have already befallen us, continue to bestow upon us His blessings, and if there is any difficulty that is yet to come – Allah knows best – then may He remove those calamities and difficulties and continuously bestow us with benefit. Only when a person reaches this state can he be called a true believer, one whom Allah the Almighty has included among the category of believers.

Thus, when you seek the paths of righteousness from Allah the Almighty in your prayers, the Holy Prophetsa stated that the means will come about to protect you from past tribulations, and you will also be safeguarded in the future. In order to open the doors of mercy, we must bring about such a permanent transformation in our lives that our connection with Allah the Almighty remains firm, and we continue to seek His grace in times of joy and sorrow, ease and hardship alike.

Hazrat Abu Hurairahra relates a narration in which the Holy Prophetsa said:

“Our Lord descends to the nearest heaven every night. When the last third of the night remains, He says: ‘Who is there to call upon Me so that I may respond to him? Who is there to ask of Me so that I may grant him? Who is there to seek forgiveness from Me so that I may forgive him?’” (Sahih al-Bukhari, Kitab ad-Da‘wat, Hadith 6321)

This is not something that is conditional on Ramadan. Here, a general principle is being mentioned: whenever a servant calls upon God in the night, He forgives him, grants him what he asks for, and responds to his supplications. Ramadan is an opportunity that Allah the Almighty has created in which everyone naturally turns towards worship. Since the attention of people is directed towards acts of devotion during these days, if you also focus on them, you will develop a habit of worship. And once this habit is established over the course of a month, you will then strive to make it a permanent part of your life.

In another narration, the Holy Prophetsa said:

“Whoever wishes for his prayers to be accepted by Allah the Almighty in times of difficulty should supplicate abundantly in times of ease and comfort.” (Tirmidhi, Kitab ad-da’wat, Hadith 3382)

As has been previously mentioned with reference to a hadith, these are very important aspects that we must always remember. Our relationship with Allah the Almighty should be constant. We should not run to Him only in times of distress, hardship, and

suffering, crying out in anguish. Rather, we should strive to be true friends of Allah the Almighty and continuously bow at His threshold in an effort to establish Him as our Friend. This requires that we remain ever humbled at His threshold. As I have said, we must be steadfast in turning to Him in all circumstances. This hadith also teaches us that we should not call upon Allah the Almighty only in times of difficulty and need but at all times.

According to another narration, the Holy Prophetsa said:

“Allah the Almighty declares: ‘I treat My servant according to his perception of Me. I am with him whenever he remembers Me. If he remembers Me in his heart, I remember him in My heart. If he mentions Me in a gathering, I mention him in a gathering better than that. If he draws near to Me by a handspan, I draw near to him by an arm’s length. If he comes toward Me by an arm’s length, I come toward him by two arms’ lengths. If he walks toward Me, I will run toward him.’” (Sahih al-Bukhari, Kitab atTawhid, Hadith 7405)

Thus, every Ahmadi should strive to remain engaged in the remembrance of Allah the Almighty and ensure that every action they take leads them closer to Him. Every step we take should be one that draws us toward Allah the Almighty so that He, in turn, comes running toward us, wrapping us in the mantle of His love and fulfilling our needs. In both adversity and prosperity, in hardship and ease, we should always remain the servants of Allah the Almighty.

According to another narration, the Holy Prophetsa said:

“The supplication that Dhul-Nun (i.e., Prophet Jonahas) made while in the belly of the fish was:

“[There is no God but Thou; Holy art Thou. I have indeed been of the wrongdoers (Ch. 21, V. 88)]”

He said, “Any Muslim who supplicates with these words in times of distress will certainly have his prayer accepted by Allah the Almighty.” (Tirmidhi, Kitab ad-dawat, Hadith 3505)

Thus, it is yet another favour of the Holy Prophetsa upon us that he continually guided us toward such supplications. Humans are prone to making mistakes and sometimes fail to fulfil the due rights of Allah the Almighty. Yet, despite this, Allah the Almighty remains merciful towards His servants and has Himself taught them prayers. Why did Allah the Almighty teach us various supplications in the Holy Quran? Why did He mention the prayers of the Prophets? He did so to teach us to seek these prayers He has taught so that He may accept them. However, the key point remains that we must first fulfil our obligations toward Him. Allah the Almighty has commanded:

That is, hearken to My call, hear My word and rejuvenate your faith.

Thus, we can evaluate our own condition to determine to what extent we are obeying Allah the Almighty’s commandments. Explaining the supplication of the Prophet Jonahas which I just read out, the Promised Messiahas states:

“This teaches us that Allah the Almighty can change destiny. Crying before Him

and offering alms, as was the case with the people of Prophet Jonahas (as mentioned in this incident), can even overturn an already decreed punishment.” Even when a judgment has been passed and a sentence has been pronounced, prayer can still avert it. (Malfuzat, 1984, Vol. 1, p. 238)

Some people question, as I have mentioned before, that if Allah the Almighty has already decreed something and He knows what is to come, then what is the need for us to pray? Why should we strive for righteousness? The Promised Messiahas says:

“Allah the Almighty has taught us this prayer, and by narrating the incident of Prophet Jonahas, He has provided proof which demonstrates that He can alter His own decrees. If you truly weep before Him, establish a sincere relationship with Him, engage in virtuous deeds, avoid sin, and prostrate at His threshold with heartfelt supplication, then (the Promised Messiahas says) I wish to help you understand that those who pray when calamity descends, seek forgiveness, and give charity are shown mercy by Allah the Almighty, and He saves them from divine punishment.”

The Promised Messiahas has stated that when afflictions descend, God Almighty is so benevolent that even then He can save a person so long as their prayers are offered earnestly with a sincere heart and one truly seeks forgiveness. The Promised Messiahas states:

“Do not listen to my words as though they are mere tales. I advise you for the sake of Allah that you ought to ponder over your circumstances. You ought to not only engage in prayer yourself, but exhort your friends to do the same. Seeking forgiveness from God serves as a shield in the face of divine chastisement and grievous calamities.” One should seek forgiveness constantly. It is a shield for a person. If one seeks forgiveness, then Allah the Almighty will save them.

Recently, I initiated an appeal for prayers, and urged attention towards istighfar Istighfar is a shield.

The Promised Messiahas states:

“In the Holy Quran, Allah the Exalted states:

Allah would not punish them while they sought forgiveness. (Ch. 8, V. 34)

(Allah does not punish the people who seek forgiveness earnestly) Therefore, if you desire to be safeguarded from this divine chastisement, then seek forgiveness abundantly.” (Malfuzat, 1984, Vol. 1, p. 207)

Thus, through this prayer, Allah the Almighty has taught that He does not punish people if they repent. Elaborating on this point, the Promised Messiahas states:

“Therefore, if you wish to be safeguarded against this divine chastisement, then seek forgiveness abundantly.”

In a narration, the Holy Prophetsa has stated that “Allah the Almighty is extremely modest, benevolent and generous. When a servant of His raises both hands in supplication, He feels too shy to return him empty and disappointed.” (Tirmidhi, Kitab ad-Da‘wat, Hadith 3556)

i.e. God does not reject a prayer that is offered with full sincerity of heart and instead grants it acceptance. Therefore, all of us who pray to Allah the Almighty,

must do so with a sincere heart. We should seek forgiveness for our previous sins and shortcomings and implore God Almighty to be able to remain firm upon virtue in the future. Then we must strive to uphold this. Strive to do this in Ramadan and pray for it continuously. Try to remain established on this after Ramadan as well. Then see how Allah the Almighty rushes to our side and takes us in His arms.

The Promised Messiahas states: “And just as in divine scriptures, a differentiation has been made between righteous people and those who are sinful, and they have been given distinct ranks; in the same manner, in the law of nature there is a distinction between these two people, amongst whom, one considers God as the Fountainhead of grace, and by way of active and spoken prayers asks for strength and assistance, whilst the other only relies on his own plans and strength, considering prayer as a farce. Moreover, he remains careless and conceited towards God. He who supplicates to God in times of difficulty and distress and seeks the resolution of his difficulties from Him achieves satisfaction and true prosperity from God Almighty, provided he carries his supplication to its limit. (The condition attached to this is that he supplicates to his utmost). Even if he does not achieve the purpose of his supplication, he is bestowed some other kind of satisfaction and contentment by God Almighty and does not experience frustration. In addition, his faith is strengthened and his certainty increases.”

(Ayyam-us-Sulh, Ruhani Khazain, Vol. 14, pp. 236-237)

We must reflect upon this matter: if we seek to attain the grace of Allah the Almighty, we must understand the very distinction He has placed between the righteous and the sinful. Indeed, the one who is righteous considers Allah the Almighty to be the fountainhead of all blessings and grace. Such a person believes with certainty that every bounty emanates from Him alone and recognizes that all strength is to be sought from Him. It is this very belief that defines a true believer. On the other hand, the arrogant do not acknowledge this reality. They believe that they can achieve everything through worldly means alone. But when one falls into such a perception, then at some point, Allah the Almighty seizes such individuals and holds them to account.

In one narration with regards to the Holy Prophetsa, it is mentioned that whenever he would get up from a gathering, he would supplicate in the following words:

“O Allah, bestow on us such fear of You that serves as a barrier between us and sin, whereby we are never disobedient to You. Bestow upon us such obedience that leads us to Your Paradise, and grant us such certainty that renders the trials and tribulations of this world easy upon us. O Allah, my Lord, enable us to make rightful use of our ears, our eyes, and our strength for as long as we live, and make us heirs to all that is good. Take retribution on our behalf from those who wrong us, and assist us against those who harbour enmity towards us. Protect us from every trial that we may face in our faith. Do not let this world become our greatest concern and worry, nor the pinnacle of our knowledge (i.e., the extent of our knowledge

should not be limited to worldly matters alone. Our worries and concerns should not be confined to material things). And do not place over us anyone who would fail to show us mercy nor someone who would not treat us with kindness.” (Tirmidhi, Kitab ad-da‘wat, Hadith 3502)

Thus, this supplication should be remembered at all times. How profoundly moving is the prayer offered by the Holy Prophetsa! It is a most comprehensive supplication that the Holy Prophetsa has taught to us. We pray to Allah the Almighty that He may enable all our abilities and every part of our body, be it our eyes, ears, nose, tongue, brain and heart, in fact, every aspect of our being to become a source of benefit to others; and may every part of our body express gratitude to God Almighty; and may we become the recipients of His bounties. May Allah the Almighty protect us from the oppressors. The current conditions in some places of the world, and also in Pakistan, Bangladesh, Algeria, etc. and also in other parts of the world and also in some of the African countries, there are certain wrongful factions who have seized control or launched attacks. Even governments, out of fear, comply with their demands. Thus, one ought to pray to Allah the Almighty that He grant us deliverance from the oppressors and He Himself seeks retribution from them and helps us against those who harbour enmity against us. When we will pray in this manner in Ramadan, then God Almighty shall bring about a revolutionary change. Then, we shall witness whether it is a cleric [Maulvi] or a powerful individual in Pakistan or any other powerful individual belonging to any government, they will not be able to cause us any harm. If we sincerely prostrate before Allah the Almighty, He shall grant us His help and do true justice of becoming a Wali and friend.

The Promised Messiahas states:

“The shortest path to drawing divine blessings is prayer. In order for prayer to be offered perfectly, there are certain prerequisites in that it ought to contain fervency, deep anguish and an intense supplication.” It requires humility and restlessness so one can develop that state of anguish. The Promised Messiahas states: “The prayer offered with humility, anguish and distress is the one that draws the blessings of God Almighty and through its acceptance, enables one to reach their actual purpose. However, the difficulty is that even this cannot be achieved without the blessings of God. The remedy for this is for one to persist in their supplications. Irrespective of how despondent or devoid of enthusiasm one feels, one should not become weary of prayer. (Whether one experiences delight in prayer or not, they should not give up) and instead they ought to pray: ‘O Allah! We have nobody except You and cannot turn to anyone else. I cannot turn to anyone, nor will I. I shall remain at Your threshold and my heart will not find comfort until you accept my supplications.’” The Promised Messiahas says: “Even if one has to initially act artificially or unnaturally, one must continue to pray. Because a time will come when that prayer offered with artificiality and apparent exertion will take on the form of true prayer.”

The Promised Messiahas states:

“In order to partake in true and pristine supplication, one needs to supplicate for that too. Many people pray, but they soon give up, and claim that nothing was accomplished. My advice to such people is that there is blessing in the sifting of this dust, as eventually one’s ultimate objective will be attained.”

The objective one seeks, the pearl that is to be gained, is attained only through this very practice. Just as those who seek gold through the traditional methods know well as they sit by the riverbanks, sifting through the soil with sieves, tirelessly sifting kilograms, even many Mann [a unit of measurement equivalent of 40kg] of soil, and thereafter do they find a small piece of gold, perhaps a mere tola [approx. 11g] or even less and become joyful over it. They spend many days in this very process to achieve this.

In the same manner, if one continues to remain prostrated before Allah the Almighty, they will eventually attain the blessings. The Promised Messiahas states:

“Eventually, one is able to attain their ultimate objective. There comes a time when one’s heart becomes fully aligned with the tongue, and then the humility and fervency, which are the prerequisites of prayer, begin to manifest.”

To develop fervency is extremely vital. The Promised Messiahas continues:

“One who rises during the night, regardless of how much a lack of concentration they have, (even if there is inattentiveness), impatience, (and one offers their prayer in a hastily fashion), yet even in this condition if one supplicates that ‘O my Allah, my heart is in Your hands, thus purify it,’ then even whilst feeling a sense of spiritual constriction [in one’s heart], if one seeks spiritual expansion and relief from Allah the Almighty, they will be granted it.”

Even from the state of disinterest, Allah the Almighty can bring about a state whereby one begins to increase in their focus and remove the obstacles in the heart and develop a state of fervency. The feeling of constriction will release, and not only will one be drawn to the need for prayer, but supplications will begin to pour out from the heart itself.

The Promised Messiahas states:

“This is the moment wherein prayers are granted acceptance. (When one is in such a state, it is understood that the time for the acceptance of prayers has arrived.) In such a moment, one will witness that the soul flows at the threshold of the Divine, like water descending from above.”

Thus, in such a moment whereby one develops great fervency, and then one continues in their efforts, Allah the Almighty then instils a state of fervency and it is then that their prayers begin to be granted acceptance. (Malfuzat, 1984, Vol. 6, pp. 93-94)

The Promised Messiahas states:

“The God to Whom I invite is very Gracious, Merciful, Modest, True, and Faithful. He bestows His mercy on the humble ones. You too should be faithful and pray with all sincerity and faith so that He may bestow His mercy on you. Dissociate yourselves from the commotion of the world and do not give a religious complexion to

your egoistic disputes. Accept defeat for the sake of God so that you may become heirs to great victories.”

The Promised Messiahas continues:

“You have to protect yourself from even the small worldly issues.”

In order to draw closer to Allah the Almighty, one must distance oneself from such things. One would have to pay attention to fulfilling the rights of others. Attention must be given to fulfilling the rights of one’s close relatives and friends. Only then will one’s attention be drawn towards fulfilling the rights of Allah, and it is then that one will begin to witness the signs of their prayers being accepted.

The Promised Messiahas states:

“The first blessing of prayer is that it brings about a holy change in a person.”

For the acceptance of prayer, it is crucial that a pious change takes place in a person. This pure change must not only occur during the month of Ramadan, but it should be a permanent transformation; it is only then that the effects of the acceptance of prayers will manifest in the individual.

The Promised Messiahas then states:

“As a consequence of [this holy change], God also brings about a transformation in His attributes. His attributes are indeed immutable, but for such a transformed person, He shows a different manifestation.” It is not that the attributes of Allah the Almighty change; rather, Allah brings His attributes of mercy and blessings into motion and bestows them upon such an individual.

The Promised Messiahas further states:

“The world knows nothing of this. (When a person enters this state,) it would seem as if He had become another God, whereas, in fact, there is no other God. The truth is that it is a new manifestation of His which portrays Him in an altogether different light. It is then that God, in honour of this special manifestation, does for the transformed one what He does not do for others.” (Lecture Sialkot, Ruhani Khazain, Vol. 20, p. 223)

Those who say, “If this is destined and it is bound to happen,” then how can one’s prayer be accepted? However, Allah the Almighty states that if one prays with true sincerity, then Allah the Almighty can change the destiny and His Divine decrees, and what was destined for a poor outcome is transformed into one of righteousness and success.

Thus, we ought to pay great attention towards prayers and make this Ramadan a Ramadan in which our prayers are granted acceptance, a Ramadan of bringing about pure change within ourselves, and then let this pure transformation become a permanent part of our lives. May Allah the Almighty grant us deliverance from our enemies, from all opponents, and from all oppressors. May Allah grant us the ability to make this Ramadan a means of bringing lasting, pure change into our lives, and may this transformation become a permanent part of our existence. May Allah the Almighty grant us the ability to do so.
