INTERIOR DESIGN PORTFOLIO VIRGINIA TECH 2023
INTERIOR DESIGN PORTFOLIO VIRGINIA TECH 2023
I’m a fourth year interior design student at Virginia Tech pursuing degrees in Interior Design and Management. I have always admired design as a unique outlet to creatively problem solve. Choosing design was an interesting decision for me, since I have always seen myself as more logical and straightforward rather than creative. I’ve found that this has actually been beneficial to me because I am able to express my creativity in different ways, and I’ve grown a love for learning new systems and processes. Since beginning my design career, I decided to also study Management with a concentration in Entrepreneurship, Innovation, and Technology. I believe interior design is a form of entrepreneurship itself in how it is constantly evolving to adapt to changing human needs. I enjoy using an entrepreneurial mindset when creating spaces to better understand different perspectives and solve unique problems. Approaching design with the mindset that there is a solution for every problem widens the possibilities of a project and the impact that it can have. My experience studying management has helped me with my overall confidence and given me real world experience, which I’ve been able to share with other Interior Design students. I’m currently a Professional Development Chair on the IDEAS board at Virginia Tech. This gives me the opportunity to mentor other students with things like Revit, Photoshop, career development, and more. When not at my studio desk, I enjoy discovering new recipes, skiing, and learning new hobbies, such as knitting.

steelcase student competition fall 2022. 8 weeks. 12,000 sf boston, massachusetts
The 2023 Steelcase Next Competition highlights a new research and development hub in Boston, MA. The company, Next, is headquartered in Providence Rhode Island and specializes in robotics. The concept for this research and development hub takes inspiration from robotics and the technology and innovation surrounding this industry. As technology becomes more advanced, the processes behind it become more complex. However the ultimate goal that technology is trying to attain remains the same - simplicity. The goal of these complex robots and systems is to make everyday life more simple for the users. This office highlights the contrast between simple and complex spaces, taking inspiration from the complexity of the built environment in the Innovation District. A path of simplicity cuts through the complex environment of the rest of the office, creating a path of travel that offers respite and an opportunity to reset throughout the workday.
The simple path throughout the office provides a sharp contrast that breaks up the complex areas of the office, provides wayfinding, and connects the entire space. Materiality, form, and colors are inspired by the surrounding city grid and elevation, and a circuit board used in robotics.
The site, located at 101 Seaport Blvd, is a part of the rapidly growing Seaport District in Boston, MA. The Seaport District, also called the Innovation District, is home to many technology and entrepreneurial ventures.
The circulation of the NEXT office is based on creating a simple path through the entire space. First the existing condition was sectioned into two distinct parts, with a third part being added within a part. These parts were then halved, creating the simplest division possible. This was used to create the base of the path with 45 degree angles to represent the angles found in a circuit board.

The new Research + Development hub has 42 employees, divided into three teams. These teams include design, engineering, and product management and development. The office includes workstations for each employee, three designated team spaces, project rooms, prototype and lab spaces, lounge and kitchen space, and a retail mock-up center. The branding of NEXT is very sleek and represents their technology forward business culture. The void through the letters in NEXT is representative of the path of simplicity found in the office space.
The Pipeline Modular Lighting system is used to create an abstracted representation of the Boston city grid and skyline. By following the x and y axis of the city grid and the z axis of the skyline, this multidirectional form is created. The fixture provides direct/indirect light to the workstation areas and much of the open office.

bienenstock competition fall 2022. 6 weeks. 5,000 sf buffalo, new york
Cultivation can be defined as growing or improving the growth of something. Often used in an agricultural context, land is tended to in order to cultivate crops. This gallery acts as a center for the cultivation of local art, artists, and the community, with an aim to foster artists’ growth and success, and enrich the community’s appreciation for local art. In the way that land is tended to for different crops, the gallery partitions are transformed to support different mediums of art. The walls of the gallery are flexible in three dimensions to cradle each piece of art while informing an organic path of travel through the exhibits. Taking inspiration from a rolling landscape, the walls are able to wrap around and highlight the individuality of different art pieces.
The central walls in the gallery, informed by the elipse parti diagram, are able to flex and move in three dimensions. The structure of the wall is a lightweight, recycled aluminum frame with flexible joints, forming a grid pattern. This frame is padded and wrapped with a lightweight, stretchy material to make it look seamless and serve as a backdrop for sculpture art.
The tops and bottoms of the walls are connected to tracks on the floor and ceiling. The walls can be moved and shaped to create indents that cradle different pieces of art as they enter and exit the gallery, reinforcing the idea of cultivating and supporting individual pieces of art.

The third floor residence is home to a couple who are the owners of the art gallery. The open layout allows for maximum entertainment area within the small footprint. The kitchen, dining, and living areas are adjacent and connect to the exterior patio. The office space converts to a spare guest room with a pullout couch, while the primary suite has a queen sized bed and private bathroom. The color palatte remains neutral to connect to the gallery, with a few added warmer hues and softer textures to make the space feel more residential.
nursing school simulation center spring 2022. 6 weeks. 11,500 sf roanoke, virginia
Healthcare is a powerful source that is constantly moving and changing, much like the wind patterns of a hurricane. The eye of the hurricane is the calmest point and is located in the center. The eye is surrounded by the eye wall, which has the fastest moving winds. The eye of the hurricane represents wellness within healthcare. Healthcare has always focused on physical health, but there is now a shift towards wellness principles such as mental, emotional, and social well being. This space encourages a moment of pause, or a standstill in between the noise.
The circulation pattern of the simulation center is based on the wind patterns of a hurricane. The “eye” or the calmest point is in the center, where the main lounge space is located. The “eye wall”, which is the busiest part of a hurrican is directly surrounding the wall. This is the main path of circulation around the space, with the surrounding rooms being of a similar level of activity. Various transparent materials were used to depict the wind and constant movement.

Materiality in the Carillion Clinic Simulation Center is informed by the exisiting historic building, and concepts surrounding the eye of a hurricane. Colors were chosen to align with Carillion’s brand, and to support biophillic design elements. The central lounge has softer materials, lighter upholstery, and more texture overall to improve comfort and meet acoustic needs.
The classroom and testing spaces are designed with the intent of fostering as much innovation and collaboration as possible. These spaces have ample flexibility and storage to allow students to practice their nursing skills and learn as much as possible during their time at the Carillion Clinic.
The home health and outpatient demo spaces share a control room with one-way glass windows. The linear shape allows maximum visibility as well as the ability for multiple simulations to run simultaneously.
shift coworking office fall 2021. 5 weeks. 7,500 sf roanoke, va
The way we work is constantly evolving. Shift is a coworking office that highlights a shift towards a new way of working, one that is collaborative in innovative ways. Inspiration was taken from the site location in Roanoke, VA, which has a very high bikability rate and where biking to work is common and encouraged. Much like the gears and chain of a bicycle, this space aims to unite distinct parts and work together to create one whole functioning unit. The spatial planning is based around a circulation path intended to mimic the shape of a bicycle chain.
The spatial layout for Shift is based on the gears and chain of a bicycle. This chain shape creates a path of circulation throughout the coworking space, connecting and unifying the different segments of the office, much like the bicycle chain connects the wheels to the body. The conference room is representative of the large gear. This circular conference room is supportive of multiple meeting styles and uses the Hightower Nest System Table and Steelcase Kona Stacking Chairs, which allow for flexibility. This is especially important for the weekly yoga classes that are held in the conference room.

The main lounge and staircase area takes direct inspiration from the shifting gears of a bicycle. Inteded to mimic the gears rotating and interlocking, the unjulating forms create pockets for users to sit, relax, and collaborate. The central conference room is given privacy with frosted glass, and the ceiling element creates a sense of constant movement around the chain, connecting the different parts of the office.
