‘Underground’ is about my personal experience with the rave subculture. Its based around one particular event, a Baseline Vs Garage Vs Jungle rave at Timbuk2 in Bristol. I decided to make my magazine about this particular subculture, something very common in my home town Bristol, as it is one that not many seem to know about or understand fully. This magazine contains images taken by me on a 35mm film camera. I chose to shoot the event in film, as it’s a commonly used style of photographs relating to street wear and this particular music genre. The aim of this magazine is to inform you about the ‘underground’ scene of this culture, and to introduce you to it.

Walls are often covered in graffiti or sticker bombed, as a certain style of art is just as much a part of the culture as anything else.

A completely useless vending machine. All the many times I’ve been to Timbuk2 I’ve never noticed this, probably because its usually hidden under the sea of sweaty people,

I also never realized quite how claustrophobic it is in here.

Dj Hutton Do you prefer Baseline, Garage or Jungle? Garage. Do you remember your first experience of the rave culture as it is today? I think my first was in Brixton, It was drum and base and I was only 17. It was fucking mad, well the bits I remember were sick anyway if you get what I mean. Do you think the way you dress influences the music you listen to, the events you attend and the people you surround yourself with? Nah. Nah I don’t think so. Honestly like I’ve kind of grown up skating and listening to beats so I think that’s where I’ve come from. Obviously how I dress now is based around more of the new skate brands but that’s just how things change. Groups like the Basement just made it easier to find people into the same shit as me garms wise, but I don’t choose to hang with them cause of what they wear if you get me I’m not that picky.

What’s your Grail? Ahh shit that’s a hard one. There’s a lot of things I want but the holy grail’s gotta be the Patta cherry wood air max. Fucking Grail mate would do anything for them creps. What’s the best part of being a DJ? It’s just fun init. it’s just sick if there’s a good crowd and It’s proper rewarding to just see people loving the tunes your playing and not giving a shit about themselves. Everyones just so happy and carefree at a rave so you never get any bad feedback, the mix of good people, good music and good drugs seems to be a decent one for us all haha. Do you prefer Djing at an event or attending? Probably Djing cause you get free drinks and stuff, but you gotta be more on the game so I cant enjoy myself as much until I’m off set. Would you consider Raves and Streetwear as the new subculture of today? I guess yeah I don’t really know what a subculture is not gunna lie is it like Punk and Hippie era shit? If it it then yeh I guess it is, not many people know about it, but the ones that are involved definitely follow certain fashions and music tastes, and I guess the big drug scene too in most cases, I mean I don’t know many people that come to these events that don’t take something or dress in a particular way. I think its becoming more mainstream though with all them 10 year old kids thinking they are stormzy and shit strolling around town 24/7. They arnt in the culture, they just think they kinda understand it. Not gunna lie I don’t completely understand what a subculture is but yeh I think I get you man. Whos your favourite artist? Of my whole life its gotta be London Elektricity and Calibre. I don’t play a lot of them in my mixes though, tend to stick with the more modern baseline stuff mixed with some jungle. Everyone likes jungle and baselines just a nice background to skank to.

It was really haunting being in the venue without any music or people, it was also freezing cold but that changed quickly.

Just remember to take spare fucking batteries so you don't have to run to Tesco in the middle of a rave because they ran out.

(we had one minute until they closed too.)

Even the toilets are cool here. I have to admit though, when I went back a couple of hours later they were covered in piss and sick. Raves always bring out peoples classy side.
