LIVING SPACE + PARKING ON THE BEACH WORK SELECTED FOR PUBLICATION BY INSTRUCTOR, “WORK 10-11” PENNDESIGN SPRING 2011 STUDIO INSTRUCTOR>> HOMA FARJADI TYPE>> MIXED-USE SITE>> SANTA MONICA, LA, USA

A Peculiar relationship exists in Surfurbia -- specifically, a juxtaposed opposition between private life and public space. The beach is the ultimate public domain, yet the living spaces on it stand in isolation, bound by solid walls, fences, and vegetation. Out proposal involves the removal of such solid boundaries, as a means to add ambiguity among what is public and what is private, what is beach, what is parking and what is living space.

INSPIRATION from movie “Reyner Banham Loves Los Angeles” Brad, the Mobile Musician: “I need a place that is very private, that no matter that how loud I yell, I’m not gonna bother anyone, and even a private apartment doesn’t do that. I can take it where I want to. I can be close to nature, make as much noise I want to when I want to. It’s a extremely private life I wanted to be.”

“Inside and out, vans give this loving attention, because the new thing in California, the new

mobile private lifestyle.”

FIRST ATTEMPT Our initial attemp is to find ways to achieve the mobile private life style. A “Mobile Urbia” came to our mind. To let people move around “home parking lots” along the coast line and that they can enjoy different views and atmosphere on different locations. However, we decided to think about something beyond that -- a parking structure that does more than just parking but includes living space.

Construct his personal private world on a context as public as the beach. Freely moves from one beach to another at his will.

TYPOLOGY This project is a new type of parking structure that is concurrently living space, beach space, etc. It is essentially an extension of the beach landscape, which is further extended to the cit by the mobility of the car.

CATALOGUE OF CONES Based on the needs of different activities and user types, a catalogues of cones is designed. Different combinations of cone depth and cone radius provides a variety of cones that’s suitable for all kinds of purposes. Mainly, there are three functions of these cones -- structure, car access, and program.

LANDSCAPE OF ACTIVITIES

viewing

The four essential activities -- bathing, eating, sleeping, and viewing -- form four distinct landscapes, offering instable and shifting relationships to the horizon, to incidental programs, to pedestrians, to cars, and to the water.

FLOOR PLANS The project is located on Santa Monica Beach next to a 18ft tall cliff and a highway. The cliff is connects to the city so three bridges are designed on the top level of the building. The top level is for viewing program that has a more dramatic topography. The third level is for sleeping program which has a lot of sleeping pods for people to stay. The second level is for eating program that has some mounts for people to gather and eat. The first level is for bathing program which is consist of several pools with different sizes. The scenery on the bathing level merges well with the sand and become a extension of the beach.

CAR CIRCULATION

Alice Chiu Portfolio | 11

The circulation of the cars is naturally formed on where there’s no program cones. The cars can either go to the other levels by the structural cones or the ramp on each level. Parking occurs anywhere near the program cones and inside the floor slab.

SUPERCHARGED

ELECTRICAL VEHICLE (EV) CHARGING STATION WORK SELECTED FOR PUBLICATION BY INSTRUCTOR FERDA KOLATAN, “MEANDER -- VARIEGATING ARCHITECTURE” PENNDESIGN SPRING 2010 STUDIO INSTRUCTOR>> FERDA KOLATAN TYPE>> MIXED-USE SITE>> NEW YORK CITY, NY, USA SUPERCHARGED serves as a prototype for the approaching Zero Emission era. Part parking structure, part charging station, part office and exhibition space. This hybrid building translates the language of human face and car expression. A component is designed to function as a facial feature that has infinite expression varieties. These components become alphabets that express the language of SUPERCHARGED.

AN OUTDOOR INSTALLATION FOR NOKIA FREELANCE 2005 LEAD DESIGNER TYPE>> OUTDOOR INSTALLATION SITE>> TAIPEI, TAIWAN AN is a freelance project for client Ogilvy Public Relation Worldwide to design an outdoor installation for NOKIA, the sponsor of National Taiwan University’s Art Festival, for advertisement and also act as a demonstration to the participants of the Art Festival competition. The fabrication was completely done by our team and it was placed at the front gate of National Taiwan University for three months. The client asked for an installation that shows both the brand’s essence and the theme of the festival which lead in out design concept. The design can be viewed from different viewpoints to create different visual effects. Taking the form of the NOKIA classic game -- Snake Arcade, the snake traversed to form the letters that can be read at certain view angles.

PROCESS The project was done entirely by our team from design to fabrication. I was the lead designer in the team and had contributed a lot of the ideas. We did a lot of study models to test the form and stability. Other than the design part, we spent a lot of time communicating with our clients and made adjustments. The fabrication was complicated but because of our good collaboration we didn’t encounter any huge problems. It was a great experience for me to learn things outside school.

LITTLE RED FOLLICLES

WATER COLLECTOR + OUTDOOR AIR CONDITIONING SCHENECK-WOODMAN COMPETITION: SHORT-LISTED SPRING 2009 TYPE: INFRASTRUCTURE SITE: PHILADELPHIA, PA, USA Little Red Follicle is a water collection device that reduce the effect of urban heat island. Located on the plaza next to the city hall, the site is a hub for commuters and a popular meeting space. Little Red Follicle provides water storage underground and streches its “hair” above ground to collect water. In rainny days, Little Red Follicle collects water and prevent the city from flood; in sunny days, Little Red Follicle evaporates the water collected and cool down the area. Other than that, Little Red Follicle serves people as a shading device and public art. Alice Chiu Portfolio | 26

Sewers are like blood vessels, running down beneath and protect the city from disease. The hard landscape of the city is like a skin covering the flesh; and the flesh is our earth. NON-CONDO HIDING IN AN ICON PENNDESIGN FALL 2009 STUDIO INSTRUCTOR>> BRIAN PHILLIPS TYPE>> RESIDENTIAL SITE>> PHILADELPHIA, PA, USA People sometimes desire a break from exhausting city life, a shelter where they can enjoy some relaxation and forget about who they are and what they do. This project aims to provide a shelter for people to “hide”. A home that offers highest privacy while still keeping spacious layout and elegant designs.

Alice Chiu Portfolio | 36

Alice Chiu Portfolio | 37

THE SITE In the neighborhood of Northern Liberty in Philadelphia, been divided by I-95 highgway, the site is physically next to but sensuously remote from the city. The site is so anonymous that is ideal for the three dominant users -- business worker, artist, and night entertainer -- that want to either hide from the city or from their identity. This project is proposing a condominium that hides people by showing an eye-catching shell like a magic legerdemain.

When people hide, they hide behind something, camouflaged in the context, or blind the eyes of the viewer. Instead, Non-Condo attracts people’s attention. Like a magician, shows you something very eye-catching and actually, secretly, hides the real trick.

Imaging the lifestyle of the three potential user types in Northern Liberties. This is a good place for a business worker seeks for a place to escape to but also want to work or hang out with friends easily. This is an ideal location for artists, who want to immerse in a vibrant area that can stimulate his inspiration but at the same time have their own space that he can focus on his work. This is also a great place for evening entertainers such as exotic dancers, bartenders and casino staff who want a place that is close enough to their work yet far enough as to not be associated with their jobs.

HIDING ANALYSIS The hiding analysis shows how far people can see the inside of the building from the street level. It is clear that the heigher the room is, the higher the privacy is. Therefore, smaller and denser openings are needed towards the bottom of the building to prevent the residences from exposure.

I am a tall condominium standing by myself and I hate how anonymous my surrounding is. I want to be pretty. Even though people can see me standing here people won’t know what is going on in me. I prevent my residents from being seen. I am like a secret; one must know the way to enjoy my insides. Come seek for me and join the internal society of hiding.
