What I DiD THIS SUMMER This summer I had an Internship at ITB worldwide - www.itb-worldwide.com The experience I had here was brilliant and valuable, I got the opportunity to work in several departments and on some big projects. Examples of these are in my Summer sketchbook. The experience gave me great reassurance in the industry and showed me some insight into jobs I hadn’t known about or considered and yet enjoyed. As a company they represent many people and brands and I was lucky enough to meet some of these during meetings and presentations. I also spent most of my Summer working, I have a part-time contract at Waitrose in my home town but usually work there full time in the holidays. Although it isn’t as relivant to the fashion industry, it is a job I enjoy. I work with some brilliant people and find customer service a really interesting area to work in within the retail environment. Over Summer I also went on two holidays, the first to Lanzarote and the second to Turkey. Although most of my time on these holidays was spent relaxing, it is always interesting to visit new places and new cultures.

What am i like? “What are you like?” The What are you like? brief asked for an A3 poster about me, based on 10 out of the following 13 categories: Food/Pastime/Book/Animal/Aversion/Comfort/Place/Weather/Transport/Clothes/ Shoes/Music/Possession This was to be a visually pleasing piece of work; I chose to use the idea of polaroids in order to create my poster. These were representative of ‘snapshots’ of my life. Originally in my plans I sketched most of the images, and upon reflection I think I would have been more pleased with a hand drawn outcome. However, I did like my final poster and enjoyed the project. It was a great way to really think about what makes you who you are and how you can demonstrate that. I think the style and layout I chose is definitely representative of me as someone who enjoys taking photos and is also a pefectionist and lover of straight lines.

Data visualisation APP For the data visualisation brief we had to produce an app based on collection information and data from one of 3 categories. Our team got given diet and fitness. The app we created was based on the idea of how food can effect your mood. I really enjoyed this brief and it was our group worked really well together, everyone listened and valued eachothers ideas throughout all stages of the creative process. Using Illustrator within the project whilst creating the logo and mock ups was a great way to quickly learn and pick up skills using the software. Everyone allocated roles within the group and luckily I got the opportunity to predominantly work on the graphic design elements of the project. Although we all contributed to all areas and offered opinions, ideas and alterations. I really enjoy graphic design so creating the app was really fun, and overall everyone was really pleased with the outcome. Everybody had input on the colours and style and logo design, which meant it was a really refined final outcome, and we recieved some brilliant feedback on all the visuals.

moving manifesto

The moving manifesto brief was to produce a stop motion video visualising data that we collected about ourselves. My chosen topic was online shopping vs internet shopping. Within my research I looked at 5 people including myself and kept records of all the shopping we did over 3 days from Friday to Sunday. The outcome was that 7 out of 13 perchases were made online, which backed up facts and figures I found about the rise of internet shopping.

What is beauty? For this brief we had to create a photograph along the theme of diversity and ‘what is beauty?’.We chose to focus on a theme of age and social media; we looked at the ways in which young girls mold themselves into sexy women through the tools provided to them in social media.

#hashtag Inspired by Gregory Crewdson’s attention to detail, we have tried to convey that social media and fashion media is predominantly constructed. Our final image shows a 14 year old girl striving to fit in with her peers by covering herself in make-up and subconsciously hyper-sexualising herself for the sake of an Instagram ‘selfie’. It is an increasing concern that these carefully edited ‘highlights’ are what people perceive as beauty. “The reason we struggle with insecurity is because we compare our behindthe-scenes with everyone else’s highlight reel” – Steven Furtick

LORD whitney workshop The theme my team had for the Lord Whitney workshop was Bucket: Space. We ended up with a outerspace circus which we produced as a set of photographs in the style of an accessories shoot.

ALl Walks/Diversity Now The Diversity Now Brief was to consider a way to create a piece of work that effectively communicate diverse body and beauty ideals. My Diversity Now entry is a photograph. The focal point of the image is a girl, made up to take a selfie. She has tried to make herself appear older, this can be seen by the clues of her actual age in the backgroud/set. The use of an instagram frame is representative of the girl placing her image out on a platform that makes it accessable by anyone from the general public. Overall, this images offers up a discusion about how a diverse society without acceptance forces people, especially the young, to mold themselves into what they believe is a socially acceptable version of themselves. Someone who has no flaws, has no imperfections. Social media is the perfect tool for this, and therefore a dangerous one. It allows you to form a false persona, to provide a highlight real of events and photographs that show you to be someone with a desirable lifestyle. In reality, it is never the whole truth. In this specific case, the young girl wants to be older, wants to be prettier and wants to be accepted. She portrays an image of maturity and wealth. In reality she’s a high school student with some insecurity issues and a need to fit in.

Visual Merchandising moodboard

For the Visual Merchandising brief, our group was given Charlotte Olympia. Below is my version of the moodboards we created; the idea was based on a mystical idea called ‘into the woods’. It was based on images we collected in London.

On my pinterest account I have several different boards that cover Uni-realted topics, inspirational people or brands, my own interests and research. I think this is a great way to accumilate images and ideas, and a great place to turn to for inspiration on layouts, typography, fashion images, trends and other aspects of graphic design.
