Some take a school bus, others walk, ride their bikes or skateboard, and some get a ride by car. No matter how they manage to arrive and leave school, there are rules they should learn and obey. This program first shows students the wrong way, then the right and safe way. Each segment begins and ends with a "bus safety song" that reinforces safe behaviour when riding the school bus. Celebrating diversity: a universal message from the real Rain Man DVD (27 min.); For grade 5-12 and Adults For general and special educators, parents, and students committed to creating a more inclusive and tolerant school and community, Celebrating Diversity: A Universal Message from The Real Rain Man provides a powerful teaching and learning tool. An excellent resource for staff development, parent training and/or for use with students in grades 5-12 as part of a character education unit. Meet Kim Peek, The Real Rain Man, observe him interact with students and demonstrate his unique gifts. Through his life's story, viewers will learn about accepting differences in others, developing tolerance and fostering a greater understanding of diversity. Walker DVD (14 min.); For ages 7-12 Walker is a young Aboriginal foster child whose only playmate is his dog. Jamie is a lonely young white boy who is afraid of dogs, and has some strange ideas about Aboriginal people. Walker ignores the racist jeering and taunting of the bigger boys and reaches out to Jamie. Together, they find friendship and understanding. Walker challenges racist attitudes toward Aboriginal people, and shows how children from different backgrounds can form friendships. This film is part of the Playing Fair series. Educators are encouraged to preview the series before use and choose the dramas most age-appropriate for their students. Deciphering dyslexia DVDs (57 min.); For Adults The trials and triumphs of four people facing a lifelong struggle with learning. Dyslexia is the most common cause of reading and writing difficulties, affecting about 10 per cent of the population. [This documentary] is designed to raise awareness and provide an understanding of dyslexia, to bring a human face to this invisible disability and to reduce the stigma surrounding it. The film profiles four individuals and their families. Their stories, along with expert commentary, illustrate the likely causes of the disability and the most scientifically sound strategies for intervention. Students learn what they can do before a spelling test or homework time to attain an optimal state of alertness for their tasks.
