a scary good time Whether it's September 1 or October 31, spooky season is all about visiting haunted places with gruesome pasts and ghost stories sure to send shivers down your spine. This frighteningly fun day trip centers around Jerome; Arizona's most notorious ghost town; and branches off to Prescott, Wickenburg, and Tempe. Buckle up: it's going to be a terrifying ride! The spooky adventure takes just under four hours, which leaves you plenty of time to explore each place without needing to spend the night anywhere. However, I highly recommend spending the night at the Jerome Grand Hotel. I have spent many nights at the Jerome Grand and have enjoyed it every time; I've even had my fair share of possible ghost sightings! The trip begins in Tempe, at Casey Moore's Oyster House. Yes, the Oyster House is haunted. The story, as it is told, is of a young woman who was murdered in the upstairs room. From time to time, she makes her presence known when patrons enter the restaurant. Everything from paintings crashing to the floor, silverware hurled through the air, lamps swing to-and-fro, and furniture rearrangement. What is guaranteed to not be scary at the Oyster House, though, is the delicious seafood. Once you hop in your car and hit the road, set your navigation for the Vulture

Mine in Wickenburg. One of the most infamously haunted places in the state, Vulture Mine was abandoned in the 1940s after the War Production Board ordered all non-essential mines to be closed. The mine is famous for once having a hanging tree, which may be the cause of reported "cold spots," orbs, and haunting voices. Public and private ghosts hunts are held throughout the year, and a thrilling, not-for-the-faint-of-heart, overnight lockdown is popular, as well. Putting the pedal to the metal head to the Palace Restaurant & Saloon in Prescott, Arizona. By now, a hearty lunch is surely needed or pull up a stool at the bar, order, and drink, where famous characters such as Doc Holiday and Wyatt and Virgil Earp have patronized the saloon. The basement is where all the action took place, once being the site of an underground jail, gambling rooms, and even a speakeasy. The tour takes you to all the spookiest places and some hot spots around the Prescott town square. After your gun-slinging is over in Prescott, saddle up and head to Jerome, our final destination. Jerome is undoubtedly the most infamous of all haunted cities in Arizona. Tucked away at the base of the hill is Old Miners Cemetery. Over 500 burials took place here, and you'll see headstones that date back as far as the 1890s. Climb from the bottom of the hill to the top and visit the Jerome Grand Hotel. The Grand was once a hospital, for over 25 years, and is said to have thousands of ghosts that roam the halls. Apparitions of children, patients, and of course, the spirit of poor, Claude Harvey, the maintenance man that was mysteriously found pinned beneath the elevator in 1935. And finally, a trip to Jerome wouldn't be complete if you didn't grab a bite to eat at the Haunted Hamburger. Yes, the Haunted Hamburger is really haunted. The owners say the spirits of former tradesmen haunt the establishment as hammers would mysteriously disappear during renovations along with nails and other tools. After a long, spooky (if not terrifying) adventure ends, hop on your brooms, and head back to Toscana to the safety of your home! PAGE 4

Nicole's Noteables by Nicole Careaga While October is all about the Boos, Scares and Thrills, the team has been focused on making this budget season less scary for all of those involved. Over the past few months we have been meeting with, and discussing the financial impact of the contracts for our 2021 Fiscal Year. In a typical budget season, the management team works to take the BOO-hoos out of budget season by gathering information for your Finance PAGE 5

Committee as early as May to ensure that they are prepared for the budget writing process. The management team reviews current contracts, and presents ideas to the Board for renewing or changing vendors based on anticipated costs and service levels. Going into the 2021 budget season has been very different than in past years. The year 2020 has been quite scary, which makes preparing for a new year a bit more unpredictable. Most years, we are able to anticipate costs for the new year based on what was spent in the year prior. Of course, operations this year saw an abnormal increase in items such as sign printing, disinfecting, and PPE supplies, while other items saw a decrease due to limited operations caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Your Finance Committee is an integral part of completing the budget, as they have insight from you, their neighbors, regarding anticipations and preferences for your financial operations. This year, the Finance Committee will be taking their final look at the budget on Friday, October 9th at 10am. During this meeting, they will provide a recommendation that the Board will be reviewing at their meeting on Thursday, October 22 at 10am. We hope that you will join us at both of these meetings via zoom. Once the Committee and Board of Directors have approved the budget, a summary will be sent via USPS to all Toscana owners. You will see this arrive in your mail the latter part of November.

Having a toddler, there's nothing scarier than figuring out what to feed my "little gremlin." His tastes change on a daily basis and he'd much rather be eating Spider-Man fruit snacks than anything else. Luckily, I've found some spook-tacular recipes to make snack-time even more fun than chewing off the head of his favorite superhero.

BOO-NANAS This cute, quick snack puts a fun twist on a toddler staple. Just add two mini chocolate chips for eyes, and a standard chip for the mouth and viola! You have a ghost!

MONSTER TEETH Another quick treat that (v)amps up a snacktime classic, monster teeth are made with sliced apples, your favorite nut-butter and yogurt-covered dried fruit (or marshmallows for an extra-special treat)!

WITCH'S BROOMS These cute brooms are made with just three ingredients: string cheese, pretzel sticks, and fresh chives. Stick about 1/3 of a cheese stick on the end of a pretzel stick, peel apart the ends and tie a chive at the top of the cheese for that extra bit of witchy flair. PAGE 8

Friday Night Fright by Lynn Jerrett

It was a hot summer's day back in July during the late 1970's. After the usual Friday night hang out at the park with my friends, I returned home. I watched T.V. for a while and then I finally went to bed. My room was very warm due to the heat of the day so I opened my window and a gentle breeze soon began to cool down the interior. I hopped into bed and after closing my eyes I promptly fell sound asleep. It seemed like I was asleep for hours, but then I felt something shaking and jostling my shoulders and pushing me from side to side. Half asleep I rolled over and saw a huge, massive black figure half in and half out of my window. A blood curling scream roared from my mouth as I was thought a monster was trying to crawl through the window. My mother quickly burst into my bedroom to find out what was going on. The room was ablaze with light as soon as she flicked on the switch. I could hear my oldest brother telling me to shush and be quiet. There, half way in the window was my brother. He had been locked out of the house and did not want to ring the bell to awaken everyone. He spied my open window and pulled over the little slide with steps thinking he could climb up and crawl through the window. Little did he realize the consequences of his actions. After everyone settled down from the scare we all returned to bed. You can be assured that I never left my window open at night ever again. PAGE 9

SO YOU WANT TO BE A BOARD MEMBER? HERE'S WHAT IT TAKES TO DO THE BEST JOB FOR YOUR COMMUNITY

Leadership Being a board member means you will be responsible for the approval (or disapproval) of proposals for the Toscana community. Examples of decisions you will be making with your fellow board members include: vendor contracts, policies, annual budgets and assessments, enhancement projects, and more. Your neighbors will look to you as an example of community leadership and innovative ideas.

Confidentiality Perhaps one of the most important tasks board members are given is keeping certain items confidential. These items can include anything from individual resident account statuses, to legal proceedings, to future planning goals, and everything in between.

Knowledge While CCMC does provide training to board members on essential topics, it is a good idea to come into the position with at least a little knowledge on your community. Take time to talk with your neighbors, discover the different common areas your homeowner's association manages, and maybe brush up on your contract-reading and finance skills! A great way to get involved before taking your seat on the board is to join a committee!

Caring Board members interact a lot with their neighbors, both in person and on paper, one-on-one and as a whole. It is important to enter into this role looking to further build a sense of community at Toscana.

GHOSTS AND POLTERGEISTS AND DEMONS, OH MY! Halloween embodies all things spooky, mystifying, and haunting. As one of my favorite holidays, I would like to go over some of the scariest supernatural phenomenon. Whether fact or fiction, life is more exciting when you can embrace the unknown (and, let’s face it, this stuff is downright fascinating)! In this article I will be explaining the differences between ghosts, poltergeists, and demons. You never know when you might get haunted (just remember don't go into the basement when you hear those ghost-chains rattling!). So let’s get acquainted with which entities could be harmless and which ones are definitely not. Ghosts: The old classic when it comes to supernatural entities; ghosts are known to simply be the spirits of people who have passed away and make themselves seen by the living. They tend to only manifest visually, but some have been reported to bring audible messages from beyond, change the temperature of a room, or bring a certain odor with their presence. Ghosts are almost exclusively dead humans who passed into the afterlife with unresolved issues or suffered a violent death; so, generally, ghosts are troubled souls. However, that doesn't exactly make them dangerous or malevolent (although they can be if they were a particularly evil person in life). They tend to stick to the location where these hard-tomove-past events took place, but have been known to attach their spirit to objects and even humans in the past. This can explain "haunted houses," where a spirit remains regardless of who is moving into or out of the space. Many people who claim to have had ghostly encounters say they've had the sensation that they're being watched, and also heard strange noises or voices in their homes. PAGE 11

Poltergeists: The word itself translates to "noisy ghost," which refers to its apparent ability to make noise, throw around objects, and otherwise disrupt our physical environment. They're said to be able to bite, pinch, and attack or harass their human victims, as well as move, throw, and even break objects. Many experts believe they have nothing to do with ghosts or spirits at all. The best way to describe a poltergeist is active kinetic energy that causes physical disturbances. This makes sense, as ghosts are generally unable to break through to the physical realm in the extreme ways that make poltergeists unique. Another key difference is that poltergeists aren't typically visible the way ghosts are; although they have no trouble making their presence known. Poltergeists are extremely angry and violent non-corporeal entities who have the power to lash out and physically interact with our environment. So while seeing a ghost is certainly scary beyond belief, being in a space with a poltergeist, invisible or not, is straight-up dangerous.

Unlike ghosts, poltergeists are said to feed directly off of the emotional state of a particular person, rather than being linked with a place. They are psychic disturbances that surround an unhappy person. Some experts explain it as a mass form of energy that a living person is controlling unknowingly and for this reason, poltergeists are known to follow energy or a person, rather than occupying a particular space like a ghost does. Demons: are defined as "an evil spirit or devil, especially one thought to possess a person or act as a tormentor in hell. They're widely considered to be insidious and malevolent in nature, and have been referenced in countless types of folklore, religions, and cultures throughout history. In religious terms, they're often considered to be fallen angels, or other "lower gods" who wield some sort of supernatural power. A demon isn't out for any resolution of an issue but rather pure malicious evil, as it feeds off the emotional energy of fear and anger. While the danger and potential for physical destruction associated with demons can be compared to that of a poltergeist, it's considered much more severe in demonic cases, and demons have the power to make themselves very much seen in the human realm. Demons can manifest themselves to us, taking on physical form

in order to try to coax us to commit evil. They're said to be highly persuasive and prey upon vulnerable, emotionally-troubled people who may be desperate for help, not able to think clearly, or are weak in other ways.

association that silver has in European folklore, it’s believed to be protective against monsters such as vampires, werewolves and shapeshifters. Along with salt, it’s believed to be pure, which is probably why it has become a symbol of protection.

And while demons won't necessarily haunt you the way a ghost will, they can do worse: demonic possession. A demonic possession occurs when, through continued cooperation with a demon, a person essentially "invites the demon in." This is where a demon's snake-like power of persuasion comes in handy. Let's all hope we maintain our wills-of-steel and that there are no exorcisms necessary in any of our futures. Glad to know the option exists, though... I mean, just in case, right?

Iron: This is another metal that is thought to be very important for humanity in protection against the dark and supernatural. The folklore and mythology behind its importance is varied worldwide. Horseshoes are probably the most well-known charms that originated as iron protection or providers of good luck. It is believed in many European cultures that horseshoes are good luck and that if they were made of iron, it would also ward off bad spirits and prevent the visit of unwanted otherworldly guests to their homes.

One of the ultimate mysteries mankind face is the question of whether some other world or dimension exists beyond the natural world—a domain of the supernatural. Some are typically seen as personal (deities, devils, angels, ghosts or spirits), while others are impersonal (karma, fate, destiny, luck). Supernatural attribution occurs when a person interprets an event (a situation, action, or thought) as being caused by a supernatural entity.

Religious Relics: Most notable, the Christian ideas of holy water and the use of the crucifix have been objects that have become synonymous with protection against various creatures and things at Halloween. Holy water is water that has been blessed with a special prayer, usually by a member of the clergy or a religious figure. It has been used historically against demons in exorcisms.

With the creatures of myth and lore out and about this Halloween, it can be interesting to look at the history of the various weapons and beliefs that people thought could dispel creatures such as vampires and demons. Here are the top five things to have in your arsenal this Halloween to protect against the things that go bump in the night.

Halloween is a special night preceding All Hallows Day (November 1st) and has been considered, for centuries, as one of the most magical nights of the year. A night of power, when the veil that separates our world from the Otherworld is at its thinnest. So please protect yourself and your loved ones, you never know what could be lurking around the corner…

Salt: There’s an old belief that throwing salt over your left shoulder would protect you from bad luck. This comes from the belief that the devil is always standing behind you and throwing salt distracts him from interfering in your life. Salt also has traditionally been a protective agent. A line of salt across all points of entry should prevent against ghosts or demons entering your home. Remember to cover ALL points of entry; don’t forget windowsills and fireplaces. Silver: Everyone has heard the myth about a silver bullet being the only thing that can stop a werewolf in its tracks, but the myth and lore of silver being used against creatures of the night extends beyond werewolves. Because of the lunar PAGE 12

Sleep Like the Dead by Beverly Elias

In June of this year, my niece and I stayed at the Grand Hotel in Jerome for one night. We had heard stories of Jerome possibly being haunted and thought it would just be a fun trip. Well, late in the evening, out of the blue, I awoke to a horribly pungent smell. It made me sick to my stomach. I walked over to where my niece was sleeping and there was no smell. It was only present on one side of my bed. Then, the smell just went away. After we got home the next day, I googled about ghosts and lo and behold there are stories of ghosts and smells of sulphur/rotten eggs. It was definitely a sulphuric smell. I was never really a believer, but to this day, I always wonder...

Halloween is here, the one time of the year when everyone loves a good ghost story. But not all ghost stories are about human ghosts. For thousands of years a night-time howl of a wolf or a dog has set our human spirits on edge. Stories of frightening, spectral dogs run throughout world history. But not all ghost dogs are “spooky scary.” Like all good ghosts, each of their stories is memorable and unique. Read on for some interesting canine capers of famous ghost dogs. Nashville, Tennessee – Preston The Friendly Boxer Ghost In Nashville’s Belmont Hillsboro neighborhood, a goodhearted Boxer keeps vigil over young trick-or-treaters. According to Ghost Dogs of the South, Preston the dog accompanied young trick-or-treaters when he saw a boy trying to pick up candy he’d dropped in the road. Preston saved the boy by knocking him out of the path of a speeding car, but Preston was fatally hit. Now every Halloween for the last 50 years, children have invariably reported being bumped onto the sidewalk when they step into the road while trick-or-treating or go too slowly for his liking from house to house. Los Angeles, California – Pet Cemetery To The Stars There is a 10-acre memorial park in Calabasas, California, named the Los Angeles Pet Cemetery. It’s the final resting place to the famous and not-so-famous deceased pets of California. Among the animals interred here: Tawny, the MGM lion, (only) one of the Peteys from the Little Rascals movies, Hopalong Cassidy’s horse Topper, and Kabar, Rudolph Valentino’s dog. Kabar was Valentino’s Great Dane. Sources say when the matinee idol died in 1926 in New York, Kabar suddenly let out a horrible howl. He was 3,000 miles

away at the time. Kabar died in 1929 and was laid to rest in the cemetery. Since then, visitors to the pet cemetery report hearing barking and panting near Kabar’s grave. Some say they’ve even been licked on the hand. Chicago, Illinois – The Ghost Dog Of Graceland Cemetery Graceland Cemetery is one of the older cemeteries in Chicago. Inside the cemetery is a vault belonging to German immigrant and coppersmith, Ludwig Wolff. One of the ghosts in Ludwig’s unique vault is a green-eyed dog that howls near the vault. No one is certain whether this was Wolff’s dog or the spirit of some other wayfaring, and perhaps unleashed, canine. Phoenix, Arizona – The Ghost Dog of Toscana Most ghost dogs do not leave behind physical traces, other than a brush against the leg or perhaps the lick on the hand. The reported ghost dog of Toscana however, leaves behind his droppings throughout the property! Not only is this mysterious dog spotted walking the grounds without a leash, sometimes he mysteriously gets into common areas such as resident hallways or elevators and leaves his mark. He surely knows this is not allowed within Toscana, with his evasive and secretive nature. At times he is reported to be a large black dog and other reports have him pegged as a small white dog.

Although the first three stories are told with fanfare within their city, unfortunately our own "ghost story" is not truly of supernatural nature. Please, if you have a canine family member, ensure your fur-friend is leashed when walking throughout the property, and does not leave behind any non-ghostly droppings. PAGE 14

WADE'S WORLD by Wade Longworth

SCARY MOVIE MARATHON We have made it to that time of year when the weather has finally begun to change and the sun is setting a earlier. All of that extra darkness means there is more time for creepy, crawly, and spooky creatures to slither around in frightening fashion. The spookiness of All Hallows ‘Eve descends upon us at the end of every October. It is in this most crisp and golden time of year that dastardly ghouls keep us looking over our shoulders. With that in mind it is also that time of year to open a window, fill a bowl of popcorn, and cozy up to watch a few scary movies. I wanted to share with you three horror movies with that changed the genre forever; Pyscho, Jaws, and Scream had society jumping out of seats with goosebumps trembling down their spine. In the year 1960 director Alfred Hitchcock directed the movie Pyscho, The movie is about a secretary that embezzles a good amount of money from her employer's client and goes on the run. She checks into an out-of-the-way motel, run by a young man under the control of his mother. It is praised wildly for its smooth direction, tense atmosphere, and effective camerawork. It is perhaps most famous for the shower scene which you will have to watch to believe. This movie is so iconic that it ends up on many "greatest of all time" lists. It also is widely considered to be the earliest example of the slasher film genre. Sticking with the thriller theme, in 1975 director James Cameron gave us the movie Jaws. It is the first movie to be shot on the ocean. The main story is about a killer shark that unleashes chaos on a beach community when a young girl meets her demise by the jaws of the beast. The local sheriff, a scientist, and PAGE 15

old sea captain team up to go after the monster. Much like Pyscho scared people from stepping into their showers, Jaws had audiences frightened to head to the beach. So much so that beach attendance after the movie was released was historically low. This also produced a generation of man-eater copycat films that many writers and directors are still trying to capture the magic of Jaws today. After a few years of uninspiring motion pictures failed to generate shrieks from the collective audiences, the release of Wes Cravens 1996 Scream once again seized viewer’s attention. He aimed to re-invent the slasher-horror genre by incorporating different elements that were not commonly used. Such as having a funny, clever, scary, masked, knife-wielding maniac that stalks high-school students in middleclass suburbia. Much like the previous two movies discussed, this film also spawned group of movies looking to make a mark of their own. All though these are three of my favorites there are plenty more to choose from because Halloween isn’t all about the scary movies. From Hocus Pocus to Halloweentown all the way through Pixar’s Monsters, Inc. you can find anything you’re looking for this month on Freeform. Find some time to relax this month by kicking your feet up on brisk fall day and catching a great flick. Please follow this link to see the upcoming schedule.

Into the Rainforest by Lorry Zaffina

This is the story of an evil spirit that roams the rainforest. Legend has it, the spirit was once a woman who became lost in the forest, got disoriented and eventually died. The troubled spirit is said to wander the forest whistling at any who cross her path. Locals say that those who hear the whistling should take it as a warning and never acknowledge what they hear. If you whistle back, she will come for you and kill you in a way so horrible you could not even imagine.

THE MAINTENANCE

REPORT

by John Raabe

CREEPY CRAWLIES With Halloween around the corner I am sure everyone will be putting up their scariest decorations; fake spider webs and spiders will take over Toscana. To make sure some real spiders (or other unwanted insects) don’t get mixed in with those decorations I would like to go over some pest control items to help out some residents. To start, the Association has a contract with Burns Pest Elimination and they are on property three times a month, twice to spray for pests and once for rodents. They spray all the exteriors of all buildings and in hallways and inside of the amenity areas. They do offer Toscana residents a discount for using their services inside your units. For inside the units, the most common complaint is cockroaches. These annoying pests can get in to your unit several different ways but the most common is through the pipes. If you have sinks or tubs in the guest bathrooms that don’t get used much, or your unit is being left unused for a week or two at a time, they can crawl up the dry pipes into your unit, this can easily be remedied by turning on all faucets at least once a week and letting the water run for at least 30 seconds. This will fill your P-trap with water, blocking that access point. If you’re leaving the unit I have heard of some people that will place plastic cups or bowls over the drains so they cannot enter the unit. Another common complaint is ants. The Burns technician is pretty good at looking for ants crawling up the sides of the buildings and spraying them, but sometimes they are hard to see and they can travel all the way up to the fourth floor, if they find something they like. The easiest way to not have to worry about ants is to make sure there is nothing on your patio that will attract them. Once they get up there, they will continue searching and could find ways into your unit. If you do notice them on your patio, or maybe around a window, please notify us and we make sure he stops the problem on the ground. I haven’t heard too many complaints about mosquitos this year, probably because the lack of water but make sure you do not leave standing water on your patio because that is where the larva thrives and you could quickly have a swarm of mosquitos on your patio and in your unit. Last, but not least, we have spiders. The most common one I see around is the daddy long legs. They are completely harmless to humans, but they sure do make a mess with their webs. There are several of different kinds of spiders around, though, and the easiest PAGE 17

way to avoid them is too keep out all the other insects. Spiders tend to hang around areas with large amounts of insects for food, so a good idea could be to keep insect repellent devices on your patios. They have battery-operated devices that omit a high frequency noise that keep insect away as well as a wide variety of scented decors to keep them away or just spraying down your patio once a month with insect repellent will definitely help. Hopefully this helped a few people with some ideas on how to keep those nasty critters out of your units and just like with everything else if you see an issue with insects or pests in the common areas please notify someone on the management team ASAP so that we can get it taken care of.

LUXURY LANDSCAPE by DLC Resources

With temperatures finally dipping down as we enter October, DLC will begin overseeding your turf areas in just a few weeks. By overseeding in the second half of the month, we allow the Bermuda turf to fill in as much as possible, which should help strengthen its crop next year. However, we will be continuing to lower mow heights on this Bermuda to best encourage and prepare turf areas for the germination winter Rye following the overseeding process. Weather permitting, you should begin to see Ryegrass growing into turf areas by midNovember! With summer coming to an end, crews have also been moving through Toscana to clear bean pod debris from sidewalks and other areas. To aid in the cleanup effort, we have been utilizing our blue sweeper vehicle to most efficiently remove these pesky bean pods. This helps to save time, which can be then spent in other areas of the Community! In selected areas around the Community, we will be removing heat-tolerant summer flowers and replacing them with cooler weather winter flowers. You will see these colorful variations of flowers coming throughout the month, adding a bright look to your fall and winter! Also in October, our Certified Tree Crews will be pruning selected trees around Toscana! With the high winds of monsoon season behind us, this process will help to thin canopies of trees and promote a healthy structure moving forward.
