Lotto NRFL Premier Preview

Round 2

Waitakere City vs Melville United Fred Taylor Park | Friday 3 April | Kick-off: 2.45pm | Referee: Chris Wolken, Assistant Referees: Mark Fisher, Stephen Merriman Waitakere will be looking to begin an undefeated run at home after posting a scoreless draw with Onehunga Sports at the Fred last weekend. Given their struggles of 2014, coach Colin Tuaa would’ve been happy at avoiding defeat on the opening day but newly-promoted Melville had no such luck in being humbled 6-2 by Bay Olympic. The one bright spot was the two goals of Kieran Frewen, who will likely receive close attention from the Waitakere defence.

vs

Three Kings United vs Western Springs AFC Keith Hay Park | Friday 3 April | Kick-off: 2.45pm | Referee: Mark Owens, Assistant Referees: Ben Norman, Bruce Horrox

vs

This central Auckland derby – the second in succession for Three Kings – is one of the highlights of the round and, if last week is anything to go by, is sure to offer plenty of entertainment. Both sides began their seasons in thrilling fashion, Three Kings falling 4-2 to Central while Springs showed plenty of spirit in fighting back to draw 2-2 with Birkenhead. Allan Pearce was on target for Three Kings and the vastly experienced former All White will pose plenty of problems for a youthful Springs.

Glenfield Rovers AFC vs Hamilton Wanderers McFetridge Park | Friday 3 April | Kick-off: 2.45pm | Referee: Cory Mills, Assistant Referees: Simon Lount, Aiden Moffatt

vs

It was business as usual for both these sides in the first round as they carried on their good form from the previous campaign to earn wins. Something may have to give on Friday but Glenfield have made McFetridge Park a fortress in recent times and will be favoured to continue their dominance on home soil. The main threat to that will be Federico Marquez, who struck twice in Wanderers’ season opener.

Bay Olympic vs East Coast Bays Olympic Park | Friday 3 April | Kick-off: 2.45pm | Referee: Nick Waldron, Assistant Referees: Tom Woo, Paul Mason

vs

The visitors are already up against it in this one after a pair of key players, Joe Bresnahan and Alec Solomons, received their marching orders last week. Their absence should play into the hands of a Bay Olympic side with confidence soaring after scoring six against Melville. Dylan Tate is the early golden boot leader after hitting a hattrick while Bays will also have to keep an eye on Stewart MacKay, who notched a double in the rout.

Birkenhead United vs Onehunga Sports Shepherds Park | Friday 3 April | Kick-off: 2.45pm | Referee: Chris Kerr , Assistant Referees: Martin Neale, Allan Wilson

vs

Both these sides will be keen to kick start their seasons after being held to draws on the road last weekend. Birkenhead will be kicking themselves after blowing a two-goal lead at Western Springs while Onehunga will also be disappointed after failing to beat Waitakere, who finished second-from-bottom in the previous season. Sports have fond memories of Shepherds Park though after recording a 3-0 win there last season.

Eastern Suburbs vs Central United Madills Farm | Saturday 4 April | Kick-off: 12noon | Referee: Torres Chang, Assistant Referees: Charles Nothnagel, Peter Lamb While this is Suburbs second ‘home’ game, it is the first at their regular base after being forced away from Madills Farm last weekend due to cricket still being played. Three of their first four games are at home so coach Malcolm McPherson will be keen to take advantage of that and get his charges into a pleasing position after the opening weeks. Central have begun well by putting four past Three Kings and will expect to pick up at least a point here.

Round 2

Forrest Hill Milford vs Lynn-Avon United Becroft Park | Friday 3 April | Kick-off: 12.30pm | Referee: Wendy McNeely, Assistant Referees: Reza Al Rebea, Rhys Kimber

vs

The title defence of champions Forrest Hill got off to the worst possible start with a shock 7-1 hiding at Three Kings so now appears to be a good time for Lynn-Avon to visit Becroft Park. There were extenuating circumstances for Forrest Hill’s poor performance though – injuries and other absences have ravaged the squad – and they will surely improve greatly over the coming weeks. Lynn-Avon suffered a mass exodus over the summer and the challenges that will bring for coach George Vale came to the fore last week with a 3-0 loss to Glenfield.

Eastern Suburbs vs Three Kings United Madills Farm | Friday 3 April | Kick-off: 1pm | Referee: Torres Chang, Assistant Referees: Charles Nothnagel, Peter Lamb

vs

This is traditionally one of the highlights of the Women’s Premier calendar and will have even more bite than usual with Suburbs sure to be fired up. They claimed a win over Papatoetoe last week but endured the frustration of having that result overturned due to the fielding of an ineligible player. The best way to get over that disappointment is to pocket another three points but it will be far from easy against a Three Kings side full of confidence after giving the champions a lesson.

Papatoetoe AFC vs Claudelands Rovers

vs

Murdoch Park | Friday 3 April | Kick-off: 1pm | Referee: Neil Tobin, Assistant Referees: Alan Tobin, Caleb Moffatt Papatoetoe had a stroke of luck in mid-week by being awarded the points from their loss to Suburbs so are now in a stronger position than anticipated going into the Easter period. Claudelands could hardly have done any better in the opening round though, showing no mercy to newcomers Norwest in an 11-0 win. Papatoetoe will not know who to attempt to shut down as Bethany Witt, Kate Loye and Tayla Christensen all scored more than once for Claudelands last week.

vs

Fencibles United vs Norwest United Riverhills Park | Friday 3 April | Kick-off: 1pm | Referee: Greg Woo, Assistant Referees: Kieran Withers, Jessie Dale Norwest’s introduction to life at this level did not exactly go to plan with that heavy loss to Claudelands and they will feel things surely can’t get any worse against Fencibles. Friday’s opponents don’t seem to possess the same potent attacking force of Claudelands but will still be heavily favoured to take all the points. Scoring was an issue for Fencibles last season and they drew a blank again in their first up defeat to Western Springs so will be keen to make a few entries into the goals-for column.

vs

Western Springs AFC vs Glenfield Rovers Seddon Fields | Friday 3 April | Kick-off: 1pm | Referee: Sarah Williamson, Assistant Referees: Robert Swiney, Charlie Tseng Springs have not been a contender since winning the league in 2008 but with virtually an entire new squad in place and former Eastern Suburbs boss Rico Wilson at the helm, the good times could well be returning – a suspicion strengthened by the 3-0 win over Fencibles. In Rebecca Tegg, Springs have one of the most lethal goalscorers in the league but Glenfield also possess such a figure – last season’s Women’s Premier player of the year Katie Rood. Whoever comes out on top in this battle of the strikers could well win the game for their side.

Round 2

Tauranga City United vs North Shore United Links Avenue | Friday 3 April | Kick-off: 2.30pm | Referee: John McCoskrie, Assistant Referees: Thomas Fritz, Brett Willis Tauranga may be new to the division but could well be promotion contenders after their dominance of the second division last year and a promising win over Hibiscus Coast, one of those fighting to go up in 2014. There is certainly a precedent for back-to-back promotions in this league after the exploits of Western Springs and another victory here would put Duncan Lowry’s men in the early running. North Shore are also tipped to do well though and justified those beliefs with a 4-0 thumping of Manurewa last week.

vs

Forrest Hill Milford vs Ellerslie AFC Becroft Park | Friday 3 April | Kick-off: 2.45pm | Referee: Vaughan Couillault, Assistant Referees: Chris Casey, Tony Wall

vs

This pits one of the favourites for promotion against a side hoping to join them in being regarded in that manner so Ellerslie will be keen to put the hosts in their place with an authoritative display. Both are coming off good results, particularly Ellerslie, who disposed of Takapuna 4-1. Forrest Hill kept a clean sheet in their triumph over fellow promoted side Waiuku and are therefore likely to prove more difficult for Ellerslie to break down.

Manurewa AFC vs Mt Albert Ponsonby Memorial Park | Friday 3 April | Kick-off: 2.45pm | Referee: Rajesh Kumar, Assistant Referees: Paul Shakes, Jeremy Ferguson

vs

The fresh start Manurewa were hoping for didn’t materialise last week as their script of 2014 continued with a 4-0 loss to North Shore. With Shore appearing to be a strong outfit, the south Aucklanders will be hoping that was just a blip and that they will be much more competitive against Mt Albert. The visitors will be in a determined frame of mind though after succumbing to Metro, the side they hate losing to the most.

Hibiscus Coast vs Mangere United Stanmore Bay Park | Friday 3 April | Kick-off: 2.45pm | Referee: Mazhar Batoor, Assistant Referees: Tony Goulding, Dimitry Sabitov

vs

Mangere will take inspiration in heading north for this one from Tauranga, who faced a much bigger trip last weekend but did not let it affect them in posting a 1-0 win. The Coasters will have been stung by that defeat as they will have expected more against a newly-promoted side and will be desperate to bounce back against Mangere. To do so, they will have to contend with the prodigiously skilful Ernesto Lopez, who scored a remarkable five goals in Mangere’s 7-2 success over Ngaruawahia.

Metro FC vs Waiuku AFC Phyllis Street | Friday 3 April | Kick-off: 3pm | Referee: James Ashford, Assistant Referees: Khalid El Gana, John Bennett

vs

Metro’s spirits will be sky high after claiming local bragging rights in the New North Rd derby and they will fancy their chances at home against a side that have only just come up and were beaten last weekend. Waiuku will be hoping their previous result has not set the tone for a season of struggle and a good result here would therefore be a very welcome confidence boost. A point would be satisfactory for Jim Evans but Metro counterpart Mike Taylor will be targeting all three.

Takapuna AFC vs Ngaruawahia AFC Taharoto Park | Saturday 4 April | Kick-off: 2.45pm | Referee: Steven Black, Assistant Referees: Jeremy Ferguson, Neil Tobin Both sides will be at a low ebb after losing in humbling fashion in round one, Ngaruawahia receiving a rude seven-goal welcome from visiting Mangere while Takapuna were outclassed 4-1 at Ellerslie. Given the heavy nature of those defeats, expectations for this weekend will have been adjusted as both sides look to steady the ship. Defending is clearly a concern for each so the respective coaching staffs will be looking for significant improvement in this area.

Round 2

Lynn-Avon United vs North Force Ken Maunder Park | Friday 3 April | Kick-off: 2.45pm | Referee: Sarah Walker, Assistant Referees: Martin Huang, Deane Laing These sides experienced contrasting starts to the new campaign, North Force charging out of the blocks with a 4-0 triumph over Claudelands while Lynn-Avon returned empty handed from their long trek to Fury. With the likes of playercoach Scott Burgess, Jeremy Rintoul and the classy Steve Schimmel in the ranks, finding the net is not likely to be an issue for North Force so the Lynn-Avon defence will have to be at its best.

vs

Onehunga Mangere vs Papatoetoe AFC Mangere Domain | Friday 3 April | Kick-off: 2.45pm | Referee: Andrew Lamberth, Assistant Referees: Gordon Campbell, Daniel Wilkinson Papatoetoe should theoretically be one of the stronger sides in the league after dropping down from Division One but it appeared they are not yet out of the losing habit when falling 3-0 to Manukau. Recently-appointed coach Mark Holt is used to success after leading Eastern Suburbs to the Premier League last season and will now be under no illusions as to the size of the task at hand. This is Onehunga’s second home game on the trot and they will be looking to go one better than their 1-1 draw with Albany.

vs

Oratia United vs AFC Fury Parrs Park | Friday 3 April | Kick-off: 2.45pm | Referee: Avnit Maharaj, Assistant Referees: Dave Doidge, Pat Barrett

vs

It’s been a long wait for Fury to make their bow at this level after being denied entry a year ago and they made up for lost time with a 2-0 triumph over Lynn-Avon on debut. Oratia are likely to offer a tougher test as they were in the running for promotion at times last year but their campaign did not begin well with a 2-1 defeat at Fencibles. Mark Withers was on target in that loss and Oratia will be hoping the former Northampton apprentice can put his injury woes behind him and return to the form of old.

Manukau City AFC vs Papakura City Walter Massey Park | Friday 3 April | Kick-off: 4pm | Referee: Carl Watkins, Assistant Referees: Peter Caffell, Chris Farnell

vs

Like Fury, Manukau have wasted no time in making their mark at this level, knocking in three unanswered goals at Papatoetoe on the opening day. Coach Ricky Espinoza will be keen for more of the same in his side’s second southern derby in quick succession but Papakura will provide a stern challenge. Having been held to a draw by Te Atatu, Jason Heather’s men will not want their progress halted by another promoted side so will not be lacking in motivation.

Claudelands Rovers AFC vs Albany United St Peter’s College | Saturday 4 April | Kick-off: 2.45pm | Referee: Paul Shakes, Assistant Referees: Sean Coon, Hubert Bakx

vs

Claudelands will be fearing they are in for another long season after last week’s mauling at North Force and coach Jim Keaney will want an immediate response from his charges to provide hope better times are on the way. Albany began much more promisingly with a point at Onehunga Mangere and will feel they are capable of claiming their first win here.

Te Atatu AFC vs Fencibles United Te Atatu Peninsula Park | Saturday 4 April | Kick-off: 2.45pm | Referee: Chris Casey, Assistant Referees: Aiden Moffatt, Charlie Tseng

vs

Te Atatu were the only of the three promoted sides not to record a win on the opening day but will be satisfied with their efforts nonetheless, having taken a point off one of the teams fancied for promotion, Papakura. And it could’ve been even better for the westies had they not somehow conspired to miss three penalties. Lome Funafuti still managed to tuck away a brace so appears to be the man Fencibles – 2-1 winners over Oratia – must look to shackle.

Round 3

East Coast Bays vs Glenfield Rovers AFC Bay City Park | Monday 6 April | Kick-off: 2.45pm | Referee: Mark Fisher, Assistant Referees: Simon Lount, Tom Woo This North Shore derby is always eagerly anticipated and, given the events of 2014, it now assumes added significance. Bays have somewhat of an axe to grind with Rovers as it was their neighbours who took the Premier League title off them last season and the hosts will therefore be keen to return fire with a dominant showing.

vs

Waitakere City FC vs Bay Olympic Fred Taylor Park | Monday 6 April | Kick-off: 2.45pm | Referee: Bruce Horrox, Assistant Referees: Martin Neale, Nick Kang As with the Bays-Glenfield fixture, local bragging rights are on the line here as the division’s two west Auckland representatives go head-to-head. Considering the contrasting fortunes of both sides in last season’s campaign, Bay Olympic will go in as favourites – although this year’s line-up bears little resemblance to the one that went before it after a summer of wholesale change.

vs

Melville United AFC vs Birkenhead United Gower Park | Monday 6 April | Kick-off: 2.45pm | Referee: Cory Mills, Assistant Referees: Hubert Bakx, Aiden Moffatt This is Birkenhead’s second trip to a promoted side in the opening weeks and coach Paul Hobson will hope his charges fare better than on their meeting with Western Springs. They somehow let a two-goal lead slip on that occasion to claim only a point and will need to do better on the road against the league’s lessfavoured teams to repeat their runners-up placing of last season.

vs

Hamilton Wanderers AFC vs Central United Porritt Stadium | Monday 6 April | Kick-off: 2.45pm | Referee: Mark Owens, Assistant Referees: Andy Holdsworth, Dominic Hopkirk

vs

Both sides are looking to up the ante this season, Wanderers to launch a genuine bid for the title after finishing third last time and Central to at least climb into the upper half. If the previous campaign is anything to go by, there will be plenty of goals as Wanderers beat Central 3-1 and 6-2 in their pair of league meetings.

Onehunga Sports vs Three Kings United Waikaraka Park | Monday 6 April | Kick-off: 2.45pm | Referee: Chris Wolken, Assistant Referees: John Bennett, Ben Hill

vs

This is the third local derby of the day in the Premier League, giving neutral fans a conundrum as to which game to attend. Sports did not manage to earn a three-pointer against Three Kings last season, drawing 2-2 and being defeated 4-0, so have a score to settle with Neil Sykes’ men. The hosts will be pleased to be in familiar surroundings after spending the first two rounds away.

Western Springs AFC vs Eastern Suburbs Seddon Fields | Wednesday 15 April | Kick-off: 7.30pm | Referee: TBC Assistant Referees: TBC Not playing until Wednesday 15 April

Round 3

Forrest Hill Milford AFC vs Fencibles United Becroft Park | Sunday 5 April | Kick-off: 1pm | Referee: Ben Hill, Assistant Referees: Reza Al Rebea, Dave Doidge

vs

This would normally be a home banker for defending champions Forrest Hill but, given the surprising events of the opening weekend, Fencibles will now believe they can take something from this game. It will still require a heroic effort from Angela Wallbank’s side, who are sweating on the fitness of former Football Ferns captain Hayley Bowden.

Three Kings United vs Papatoetoe AFC Keith Hay Park | Sunday 5 April | Kick-off: 1pm | Referee: Wendy McNeely, Assistant Referees: Brandon Day, Robert Swiney

vs

The visitors are likely to be understrength for this encounter as their squad has been badly affected by injuries and other absences – forcing coach Andrew Kirk to send out an SOS call for reinforcements this week. Three Kings are probably not an ideal opponent to face in a weakened state as they possess one of the most talented bunch of players in the division.

Lynn Avon vs Norwest United Ken Maunder Park | Sunday 5 April | Kick-off: 1pm | Referee: Gordon Campbell, Assistant Referees: Kieran Withers, Fernando Karam

vs

It is likely to be a difficult season for Norwest and matches like this appear to be their best chance of picking up points as clashes against the heavyweights will not yield much. Conversely, Lynn-Avon will see this as a great opportunity to put in a confidence-boosting performance after being handed a tough start in facing last year’s runners-up and champions in consecutive weeks.

Eastern Suburbs vs Glenfield Rovers Madills Farm | Monday 6 April | Kick-off: 1pm | Referee: Johanna O’Connor,

vs

Assistant Referees: Brandon Day, Rhys Kimber A new man may be at the helm of Glenfield – Andrew Clay having headed over the bridge from Three Kings – but little seemed to change in the way of results with last season’s runners-up continuing their winning ways on the opening weekend. Suburbs have had a dramatic week due to the saga of the points docking and it will be interesting to see how they respond over the Easter period.

Western Springs AFC vs Claudelands Rovers Seddon Fields | Monday 6 April | Kick-off: 1pm | Referee: Sarah Williamson,

vs

Assistant Referees: Kieran Withers, Caleb Moffatt Claudelands enjoyed a great time against Springs last season, notching a pair of big wins for an aggregate score of 14-1. But hardly any of the current Springs line-up were involved in those encounters – the majority of the squad has followed new coach Rico Wilson from Eastern Suburbs – so do not have any bad memories to get over.

Lotto NRFL Division 1 Preview Forrest Hill Milford vs Mt Albert Ponsonby Becroft Park | Monday 6 April | Kick-off: 2.45pm | Referee: James Ashford, Assistant Referees: Trevor Middleton, Eric Yu Two of the league’s brightest young coaches will lock horns here with Forrest Hill’s David Mulligan trying to outwit Mt Albert’s Nick Snedden. Player-coach Mulligan – a former All White with a wealth of experience in the professional game – has already masterminded a promotion in his short time at Becroft Park and his squad appears well-equipped to launch another bid.

Ngaruawahia AFC vs Ellerslie AFC Centennial Park | Monday 6 April | Kick-off: 2.45pm | Referee: Ben Norman, Assistant Referees: Isaac Fransen, Sarah Walker A trip over the Bombay Hills always proves a challenging test for the Auckland-based sides but Ellerslie will be buoyed by the fact that Ngaruawahia did not win a single game at home in the previous campaign. That was in the Premier League though and new coach Magi Manresa will be hoping the step down can bring about some much improved form at Centennial Park.

Mangere United vs Tauranga City United Centre Park | Monday 6 April | Kick-off: 2.45pm | Referee: Vaughan Couillault, Assistant Referees: Charlie Tseng, Paul Mason These sides both made major statements with impressive results on the opening day and the early signs would suggest they are capable of pushing for the promotion places. The Easter period will provide a much clearer indication of whether that will be the case though and this is therefore a key fixture. Tauranga had the meanest defence across all men’s divisions of the NRFL last season but will be tested greatly by the likes of Ernesto Lopez and Iwa Shaker.

Manurewa AFC vs Hibiscus Coast Memorial Park | Monday 6 April | Kick-off: 2.45pm | Referee: Carl Watkins, Assistant Referees: Mark Fleming, Neil Tobin This is the second of three successive home games for Manurewa and, given their setback against North Shore on the opening day, the south Aucklanders need to make the most of this run to emerge with some foundations in place for an improved season. The Coasters went close to promotion last term but have since lost James Lawson and Zane Olla to other clubs – both key players who will be hard to replace.

Takapuna AFC vs Waiuku AFC Taharoto Park | Monday 6 April | Kick-off: 2.45pm | Referee: Mazhar Batoor, Assistant Referees: Wandyk Freitas, Dimitry Sabitov Both teams suffered first-up losses and a further poor result on Good Friday will leave them desperate for the points here. Takapuna will not know much about newly-promoted Waiuku and will hope the visitors’ recent bout of travelling – this is Waiuku’s second trip over the bridge in three games and their third away match in succession – has taken its toll on the players.

Metro FC vs North Shore United Phyllis Street | Monday 6 April | Kick-off: 3pm | Referee: Steven Black, Assistant Referees: Peter Lamb, Pat Barrett The winds of change have blown through each of these clubs with both under new management and having a vastly different set of players in the ranks. Both are proud outfits with a history of success at a higher level and will feel they have been out of the local spotlight for too long. This clash was a thriller last season, Metro running out as 3-2 winners.

Round 3

Lynn-Avon United vs Papatoetoe AFC Ken Maunder Park | Monday 6 April | Kick-off: 2.45pm | Referee: Jeremy Ferguson, Assistant Referees: Perry Tompsett, Rene Vaughan Lynn-Avon have a run of three home matches from Good Friday onwards and coach Karl Phipps will be pleased about that as his side are traditionally much stronger on their own soil than the road. Five of Lynn-Avon’s six wins last season came at Ken Maunder Park and, with Papatoetoe’s confidence low after relegation, the hosts will feel they have every chance of three points here.

Onehunga Mangere AFC vs Oratia United Mangere Domain | Monday 6 April | Kick-off: 2.45pm | Referee: Rajesh Kumar, Assistant Referees: Dave Doidge, Torres Chang If results on Good Friday don’t go their way, both these teams will be chasing their first win and each will have already pencilled in this clash as one they are capable of winning. Onehunga-Mangere will be out for revenge as they suffered a 4-1 embarrassment at the hands of Oratia in the corresponding fixture last year.

AFC Fury vs Claudelands Rovers AFC Maramatanga Park | Monday 6 April | Kick-off: 2.45pm | Referee: Andrew Lamberth, Assistant Referees: Greg White, Thomas Fritz The two meetings between these sides will be full of intensity as they are the only WaiBOP members in the division and will therefore be battling it out for local pride. Despite only recently entering the NRFL fray, ambitious Fury will be looking to continue their swift climb up the leagues and will see no reason why they can’t sweep aside a team that won just once on their travels last season.

Albany United vs Papakura City QBE Stadium No.4 | Monday 6 April | Kick-off: 2.15pm | Referee: Chris Casey, Assistant Referees: Jordan Morrow, Peter Caffell These clubs are located at opposite ends of the Auckland region and were also separated by a significant points differential last year, Papakura finishing 14 points better off than their counterparts from the north. That was achieved with the help of goal machine Harry Hillary-Jenkins, however, and he is currently in his homeland of Papua New Guinea.

North Force vs Fencibles United Kamo Sports Park | Monday 6 April | Kick-off: 2.45pm | Referee: Allan Wilson, Assistant Referees: Michael Badham, Stephen Merriman Freshly-appointed Fencibles coach Daniel Rattray made an immediate impact by picking up three points in round one but he is likely to find out a lot more about the qualities of his squad in this long trek north. The trip was worthwhile last season as Fencibles returned with a narrow win and a repeat would be seen as an excellent result.

Manukau City AFC vs Te Atatu AFC Walter Massey Park | Monday 6 April | Kick-off: 2.45pm | Referee: Gordon Campbell, Assistant Referees: Brett Willis, Daniel Wilkinson These sets of players are very familiar with each other after spending last season battling it out for the AFF/ NFF Conference title. Te Atatu took the spoils in that duel but it is Manukau that have started the brighter of the two in the NRFL so, with home advantage also on their side, they will be favourites here.
