Inside contains selected works produced during my employment at Collins Pennington Architects, and graduate projects at the University of Canberra. Each project manages to exhibit a personal objective whilst meeting the expected outcomes provided in the brief. The term ordinadis chao - organising chaos - is my perception of architecture and it’s role within the world. The word chaos in itself inhibits a negative connotation and is quite jarring, but by acknowledging and understanding its existence you become far more capable of producing higher quality results of order. Life is the balance of chaos and order, light and dark, Yin and Yang; neither qualities are greater than the other, they are complementary forces that are required to exist. Everything around us has been fragmented into individual puzzle pieces, our task as architects is to identify the qualities of each piece and see the various possibilities that can come from it. It is natural for chaos to exist, and it is natural for us human beings to arrange that and make order from it all. Each semester solidified my foundations of theoretical and practical architecture, each semester allowed my curiosity to thrive. This is all present in my studio projects and essays that cover a varying but relevant topic of architecture that allowed discussion amongst my peers.

VERTICAL SCHOOL
A new typology that is currently emerging in architecture; the vertical school. This project provided opportunities to question what makes a school a school, and what can make a vertical building dynamic. Located in the CBD, the secondary education vertical school required a contextual relationship with its urban settings, publicly accessible facilities as a contribution will help enrichen and encourage the relationship with the public realm. Large focus on section reveals the potential of the architecture within; crafting and sculpting spaces from a block of stone.
Perspective section radical circulation and organisation of programs
CIRCULATORY CONCEPT
CIRCULATORY SYSTEM
Experimenting with an alternate circulatory system that causes a greater impact in providing events - Bernard Tschumi’s theory. The shift/split of the typical primary circulation distributor ‘stretches’ occupancy of a space, in this particular instance the school quad halfway through the building; an important quality of schools.

DICKSON: ARCHIPELAGO REVIVED!
The Garden City dream and the many town-centres that are scattered through Canberra has withdrawn the potential of creating dense urban environments, Dickson Shops being one of them. Although located close to the CBD it is an area that is under utilised. Town-centres have not reached their full potential due to the lack of commitment to produce the facilities for these communities. What if we were to commit radically and discover the true potential of town-centres through the route of a hybrid-megaform, thus producing what we can consider an ‘archipelago’.
Abstract illustration of Dickson precinct Canberra, ACT
Initial sketch of given site. Painting the site to help identify key surrounding elements and characteristics.
Direct element is identified, how to embrace and enhance it w/ architectural elements. This highlights the path and route of the site.
Final draft; painting with regular forms and patterns, organised in a chaotic manner allows an observation of possibilities. Relationships of forms, view points, site axis’, and language of site are exposed.
Section A ‘Dining Pod’ sitting gently on the lifted ground plane. Transparency through pod maintaining the relation of the internal form as a whole. Marketplace expands the entire basement level.
Performance hall and public rooftop courtyard. Articulation of the ‘wall’ providing clear sightlines directly through the entire form. Section B

NORTHBOURNE AVENUE HOUSING
Successful housing projects are achieved through the success of communal and social facilities. The proposed sites were located along a vital prominent arterial road of historical significance to the conception of Canberra; currently undergoing large scale redevelopment to further densify the CBD and its surroundings. Northbourne Avenue has been neglected and lost its charm and connection to Canberra due to the jarring juxtaposition between humans and machine; focus has instead been reorientated towards the residential side of the adjacent sites or completely divided with the development of multi-storey offices with no relationship. This project was an exploration into altering a negative component of the city into an advantage, whilst solving the initial housing objective. A gateway that promotes the community values and culture of Canberra, and retuning the purpose of Northbourne Avenue back to what it originally was.

Site Circulation
Hard edge has been broken and diminshed between the two sites. Hard edges continue beyond the sites along Northbourne Avenue
Circulation between site on either side of Northbourne available w/ pedestrian crossing at the southern end, and bridge at the northern end creating ownership of the space to pedestrians > to the residents of Canberra
Visual Breaks
Stage 2
Visual breaks provided with views towards the sky; lowest building height @ 3 storeys. Mass of buildings eased by elevating form a storey above ground level. Large setback of the forecourt eases the presence of a large building along Northbourne

OPERA by the SEA
This project required a design of an Opera House fit for today - a cultural hub -, one that encapsulates the architectural style of the 21st Century that is iconic but can withstand the passage of time, lasting for decades to come. Designed to encapsulate the history, the culture, and the surrounding context Valge Laev - named after the mythological White Ship that brings freedom and takes people to a better land - is a cultural hub that belongs to the people of Tallinn, Estonia. It was essential that the project became a cohesive junction between the Soviet Union constructed Linnahall Arena and the Port of Tallinn resulting in a harmonious waterfront presence between all three sites.
Elevated perspective of Linnahall, Valge Laev, & Tallinn Port
Diagrams analysing and identifying relationships of environmental and architectural elements. Orange representing primary elements; either mandatory links/relationships between functions, or highlighting that the collection of programs will represent the building’s spirit in function and form.
Ship
Linnahall Quick sketches in an attempt to produce a form that is identifiable through simple lines; an icon that all can be easily remembered.
Dock
Designed based on a hybrid of a ship, Linnahall, and a dock. Ship represented by curviliniear lines, dock orthogonal linework, Linnahall by the opera house as a whole - an alien mothership upon the shores of Tallinn.
Opera House
Above: Reforming site; creating interesting vantage points upon the shoreline for dwellers and incoming visitors. Initial sketch of opera house silhouette. Attempt to create heirachy within the sectional form. Side & Below: sketching architectural elements ie; beside - courtyard pavement characteristic to be achieved, and stair/ramp layout for lower court seen in plan.

COMMON GROUNDS 2 Dickson, Canberra Multi-Residential Late 2019 - Present Involvement: Feasibility > Development Application Team collaboration of a Multi-residential project part of the affordable housing program initiated by the ACT Government. Extensive design solutions were studied. Client was not sure what they were after so various options were developed to pinpoint the eventual desire of the client. Eventually wanted a balanced mix of units that provided communal and community facilities. A masterplan by an alternate consultant was provided; this project was at the tail-end of a masterplan to connect to the existing Dickson commercial precinct. Designed to integrate within the existing community by providing ground level community zones that are activated by shop-fronts/cafes along a primary pedestrian path. Residents across the Sullivan’s Creek had concerns of visual obstruction from their properties, and reduction of direct sunlight, but the site location and decision to limit building height waived their concerns. Role: - Feasibility studies - Documentation for community feedback
- 3D modeling - Architectural documentation
