A portfolio containing the works from Alief Riyadi, an undergraduate student studying at the University of Canberra. The learning outcomes from this three stage project will demonstrate and understanding of the design issues in a small scale architecture project, explore the circulation with form, volume and purpose, and interpret design concepts in response to site and orientation. This will be displayed throughout the portfolio showing the development of the

Exploration 1 explores the concept of using figurative paths to guide an occupant and using light and shadow as a tool to implement this idea.

Throughout the day with the movement of the sun, a shadow is cast by the large corten steel elements creating a figurative path on the ground that transist throughout the day with the movement of the sun. The concept was to make the occupant feel out of place when they traversed in a ‘path’ that was not under complete sunlight. The feeling of walking through a ‘portal’ as they walked through negative space carved by the corten elements was an experience I wanted to duplicate as if you were driving under an underpass or through a short tunnel.

Initial design plan where main elements and sectioning will be similar. Dark, heavy hallway with sliver of light. ‘Light carving negative space’. Use slope of site to create an ‘amphitheatre’ type seating arrangement around the hearth.

Courtyard sketch

Circulation needs to flow from entry to hearth, to exit. But do NOT force occupants to make their way to the hearth. Must be convenient for the occupant for if they desire to continue immediately towards the next stage.

Exploration 2 applies heavyweight materials in the form of planar elements. The language behind the built elements is scale.

Rammed earth was a material of choice that allowed the language of scale to be exaggerated. The earthiness and natural characteristics of the material was to imitate the scale of a cliff when looking up at the base that is aided with the aperture of light between the overhead and most southern wall. When exiting from the threshold the next element that instantly draws the eye is the chimney because of its mass. The scale of the chimney, made out precast concrete with a smooth dark grey rendered finish, can be greatly appreciated when it is approached as the sky expands in the background. This exploration displays the understanding of scale and how the elements that can feel overwhelming may be controlled so that they are scaled appropriately in relation to site and human scale.

Exploration 3’s task was to design two towers where one was designed using heavyweight materi-

als and the other using lightweight materials. It is important for both towers to work cohesively and continue the language that has been applied throughout the previous explorations, but it needs to be able to stand as its own.

The dwelling is composed of off form precast concrete i n vertical layers creating the illusion of height. Overtime the concrete will look very aged due to weathering and look more the part within the site. Dwelling consists of a bedroom, bathroom, kitchen, living space and an additional rooftop terrace that is kept to the bare minimum. The dwelling is simple a place of rest, excluding the idea of and forms of recreation other than relaxing in peace. The observatory, in this situation the study, is designed and built using black anodised steel members, recycled American oak timber, and the facade completely out of grey 60mm winged U-Glass. U-glass was the perfect material for a lightweight structure as it is strong against wind, a fire resistant material, and able to disperse light as it passes through the glass reducing the amount of light and heat that enters into the interior space. The balance between concrete and glass as two separate volumes was difficult but with the way both towers were placed in conjunction with the site keeping parallel to the two axis created by the contours it allowed a different form of tension to take away the single difference of materiality.

The Writer. The imagination is a home for minds to wander, a place to discuss, a location to learn. It is the translation from your imagination to the physical world that can sometimes be lost. A space that is inviting allows you to pull these thoughts out of the mind, a space of inspiration allows your thoughts to grow, a space of tranquillity allows you to create and build it into reality. A client who writes requires a space with quality lighting. Artificial is convenient, but natural light has a lot to offer. Shadows create a relaxing ambience that feels alive. It is important that the light is at a controlled level. Lighting is an important element as positive and negative light tells a story throughout each exploration, up until the third where it will be applied much more literally. The balance of urban and natural environments in view allows inspiration from both dimensions of reality to exist when visiting the site. The sounds of the CBD calls for you to come and be a part of the hustle and bustle, but the sounds of birds, the breeze that flows between the trees, and the lapping of the lake’s waters tell you exactly where you need to be, here.

A successful project has been completed exploring different forms (linear, planar + volumetric), functions (path, threshold, hearth, dwelling + observatory/study), materiality (lightweight + heavyweight), and the use of horizontal and vertical movement to help express the architectural language that has been designed and created.
