MAEER’s

MIT ID MANDATE

At MIT Institute of Design, our education addresses new and emerging socio-cultural and economic realities. We believe that Design is a critical value addition that will pitchfork the country to use its culture and tradition as a legitimate basis for innovation to create new value chains for the future. There are increasing demands on design to play a key role in the domains that were traditionally considered to be the forte of technology and management. Design has major roles to play in India at this stage of evolution and maturity. Design acts as a strategic tool for economic progress and improved competitiveness, creating employment and business opportunities and upgrading quality of life. The emergence of design can thus bring global competitiveness to Indian industries, enhancing profits. It helps expand export volumes multifold while understanding and creating quality of life products for the national and global customer. It generates an ‘innovation culture’ and brings best practices and technology to the masses and to the needy.

CLASSROOM PROJECT // Character Design Author Sudha Murthy’s Dead Man’s Painting, has an interesting character named “Krishnakant”. He has an appealing role and is very authoritative in nature, so I chose to work on it. Not much information was available on the appearance or age or his nature. So depending on the role which he was playing, I had to design a personality based on a few assumptions, which I thought went quite well as Krishnakant Singh. I assumed the events to take place in Rajasthan. I doodled, explored and finalized the character, made gesture and situation drawings, sketched silhouettes to give an ultimate feel to the character. And finally designed the set and made a clay model of the character. Faculty Guide: Prof. Prosunjit Ganguly

1 DIPLOMA PROJECT // Artist Alert! An awareness film on Occupational Health Hazards of professional artists and painters. Artists belong to that section of the society who work for the love of their profession. The passion and crazy hours which takes in to make a piece of art often takes a toll on their health. The film addresses problems faced by three women artists because of their postures and their exposure to chemicals used. Also, being women means added responsibilities of marriage and childbirth which only aggravates the situation when health is ignored. So eleminating wrong postures of work to avoid pains in back, knees and shoulders is necessary. Also, suggesting measures like following the proper posture and maintaining a routine of taking breaks while working and regular exercises, muscle pains and other major hazards can be prevented. Pregnancy further complicates the postures as the back bends further more due to the weight forward so there should be extra care taken. Faculty Guide: Prof. Prashant Desai Industry Guides: Prof. G. CLASSROOM PROJECT // Green Design - Leaf Leaf is inspired from the mechanism of a natural Leaf. Entire structure is around 12 feet tall and works in the same way as dewdrops are formed on natural leaves. There are 4 major components in this equipment – Solar panel, Charge controller, Lead acid battery and a thermoelectric module. All these parts work well in conjunction to create water. The process of condensation forms dewdrops when the aluminum plate cools down its temperature with the help of the thermoelectric module. The water passing through the Sand filter gets purified and minerals are added to it. Further passes through carbon filter and the drops then get collected in the attached earthen pot, which cools down the water. Through this process, one unit can collect up to 15 liters of water per day when humidity is relatively high. Faculty Guide: Prof. Pritharshv Pushkar
