THE DREAM COMING TRUE by Urszula Łęczycka z photos by Alessio Azzali
The grey colt born at the homeland of Arabian breed, at a small farm of a true horsemen and then loved, acquired and appreciated by her owners from the United Arab Emirates starts his trip to the big world winning hearts and trophies at one of the most important shows in Europe so far, the Menton Arabian Horse Championship. The exceptional colt BA Marshal is cherished by his proud owner Al Mazrouei Stud from Abu Dhabi. The famous stud farm already owns a superb collection of Arabian horses and thus added the rising star to his group of horses. The proud breeder of BA Marshal is Mr. Saif Al Ali from Banat AlReeh Arabian Horse Stud. Being a very passionate breeder and having a big love for the breed Mr. Saif Al Ali describes the story of BA Marshal: “I purchased his mother, SS Reeman, as a 6 month old filly at Sharjah Stud loving her from the first sight. When she arrived at my farm it was raining, and I thought it is a good sign for her future. She has perfect pedigree – AJ Portofino crossed with

Gazal Al Shaqab. BA Marshal, named like this to be a commander, is her first foal and from the day he was born I saw he is very special so I was insisting on sending him for international shows outside Middle East. And my dream came true – I found the right owner with Al Mazrouei Stud. A real gentleman who appreciated and estimated well the quality of the colt. Al Mazrouei Stud was the perfect choice. They supported the yearling colt with a strong promotion and at his international show debut BA Marshal was named class winner, Gold Champion Yearling Colt and Best Male at very strong competition in Menton, thanks God!‘‘ BA Marshal – a typical son of Excalibur EA, very sire look alike, with beautifully ciselled head and correct body took almost whole lines of „twenties” for type and head and neck from the judges. With the enormous total of over 93 points was without a doubt the winner in all his categories. Unfortunately due to the pandemic situation and the country rules neither the breeder nor his owners were present with him at that special day of first glory but we can be sure about his bright future and we truly believe that its just a beginning of a triumphant march. q

el Vacchio Arabians, based in the charming Italian region of Puglia, is a relatively new location on the map of European breeders. Eugenio Del Vacchio, the owner and founder of the stud, is an ambitious and hardworking individual with a strong desire to make his own way in the world ofArabian horses. He takes pride in both ofhis enterprises; a well-established family business and a newly created breeding programme. However, it is Vesuvius DPA (EF Kingston x Psymply Red VF by Psymadre), a charismatic chestnut stallion that he recently purchased from Kristi and Janel Hopp, that he considers the greatest love ofhis life. Kamila: You are the CEO of a large leather manufacturing company. How did you get involved in Arabian horses? Eugenio: I am proud to be the CEO ofDel Vacchio Leather Diffusion (www. delvacchioleather. it), a famous Italian tannery run by Del Vacchio family for generations. We

strongly believe in the need to preserve the skills passed on from generation to generation and to create sustainable value for the local society and the environment in the Solofra district. I am also the CEO of Del Vacchio Immobiliare, a real estate company that organizes unforgettable stays in luxurious homes located in Puglia (www. casedifiaba. it) and soon also in the Amalfi coast. Following a loss in municipal elections in 2017, I realized that animals, Arabian horses in particular, are much more affectionate and loyal than some people.
Kamila: Where did you see Vesuvius DPA for the first time and what was so special about him that persuaded you to buy and promote this elegant chestnut stallion? Eugenio: It was at AF Training Centre run by Antonio Fusco and it was love at first sight! His incredible personality immediately captured my attention. His presence makes me happy and serene. I wish I could be with him all the time just to capture all the positive energy that he

releases. The connection between us goes beyond any human relationship.
Kamila: If you could use only three words to describe Vesuvius, which words would that be and why? Eugenio: Big, elegant and sweet. With his impressive height
of 162 cm at the withers, I call him my Big Cuddly Toy. At the same time, his size does not stop him from floating in the air in an elegant and graceful manner. Vesuvius loves being pampered but he always gives so much sweetness and tenderness in return that you could spend your entire life spoiling him.
Kamila: Vesuvius is a predominantly Polish and Russian cross. These bloodlines have become less popular in the past few years. What benefits from using Vesuvius can you outline for potential breeders that would like to use him in their breeding programmes? Which qualities does Vesuvius consistently pass onto his progeny?
BLOODLINE
Eugenio: Combining a double dose of Padrons Psyche, the
horse that has made history in and outside of the USA and started a new dynasty of champions, Vesuvius carries a great genetic prepotency and passes many of his best traits to his foals. This distinctly masculine stallion with an exhilarating movement has already proved to be an excellent sire capable of stamping his get with substantial structure and an dynamic, pulse-stirring trot. From the moment they are born, Vesuvius’s offspring exhibit athletic strength and undeniable charisma. In my opinion, this is what majority of breeders are looking for in a breeding stallion and, later, also in his progeny. At least, this is what I am looking for. You cannot go wrong with Vesuvius. All his foals are good-looking, healthy and having a bright future ahead of them, both in the showring and in the breeding barn.
Kamila: Which bloodlines and mare types, in your opinion, cross well with Vesuvius?

only about its physical appearance, but also about its unique personality and sweet temperament. What is more, a breeding stallion should combine masculinity and athleticism with gentleness and kind disposition. Vesuvius possesses all these traits and that is why I love him so much!
Kamila: Have there been any exciting foals by Vesuvius so far?
Kamila: During the Menton Show, Vesuvius DPA was fourth in the strong class of 4-6 years old stallions. The competition was tough, but what do you think could have been done differently for him to get a slightly higher result?
Eugenio: All ofhis foals are special to me, but I have a soft
spot for the first filly by Vesuvius that was born at Del Vacchio Arabians, Alayta H (out of Anisah Star by Windsprees Mirage), a super elegant and refined chestnut filly ofexceptional balance and commanding charisma.
Kamila: When describing an Arabian horse, its amazing appearance, breath-taking movement and undeniable magnetism are always mentioned in one form or another. What about the personality and disposition ofa horse? Are they important to you? Eugenio: Of course! The beauty of an Arabian horse is not 26 | TUTTO ARABI - www.tuttoarabi.com
Eugenio: We strongly feel that we did our best, but we will definitely continue the hard work going forward. Vesuvius is still a relatively young stallion and he keeps maturing nicely. I am sure that he is more than capable of achieving better results in the future. Kamila: What are you plans in relation to showing Vesuvius in the nearest future?

Without a doubt, Coco Chanel is the queen of the stable. With irrefutable elegance and noble presence, she is reminiscent of her namesake, the famous French fashion designer, who once said that ‘a girl should be two things: classy and fabulous’. These two words are a very accurate description of this chestnut beauty. Additionally, she is one of the very few daughters of Vervaldee in Europe as well as an excellent proven broodmare.

In addition to her refined type and balanced body, Luna’s dynamic trot with an upright tail carriage add greatly to her distinct noble presence.

WHERE IT ALL BEGAN...
For many years being a horse enthusiast, competing in sports, jumping and dressage. Amira tells she very soon discovered she had a great passion for horses. The passion grew into a specialism of which she has graduated in Equine studies. In 2008 Amira started her journey with Arabian horses. Greatful of sharing the same passion with her husband Eiad Safady. Eiad has been a breeder of Arabian horses since 1998, starting with Straight Egyptian horses of which he describes are the reason of him being fascinated by this beautiful creature. Over years Amira & Eiad decided to use different bloodlines in their breeding program, and this has led to the creation of their farm: ‘Royal Dutch Arabian Stud’, based in the Netherlands.

ENRICHEMENT IN OUR LIVES
The Arabian horses have enriched their lives in many ways. First of all the Arabian horses are the reason of bringing Amira & Eiad together. Together they enjoy going to the shows, seeing rare places they would probably never visit. Of course meeting all the people with the same passion from all continents makes it a great journey every time. They can definitely agree on the fact that the Arabian horse distinguishes itself from any other horse breed. It is something about them, Eiad says, that just makes us enjoy watching them in the fields as they are peacefully grazing among their friends. We share a lot of our thoughts on qualities we see in sudden blood lines and love to read about visions and experiences of respectful breeders, who have become an icon in the Arabian horse world. Royal Dutch Arabian Stud has an amazing collection of foundation mares. To Amira & Eiad breeding is about knowing the qualities of their mares. They have selected their mares throughout the years, different blood lines but still they have a lot in common. Big eyes, strong body’s and everyone of them is a strong mover. Amira, Our vision is to start with a strong base of mares who complete our desires, then selectively choose the stallion, based on his pedigree, offspring, performance, character and of course his looks. Amira & Eiad have most of their mares ridden under saddle, they find it their priority for the mares to be relaxed but still stay in shape. Since last year Amira started competing in Dressage with their beautiful Gazal Al Shaqab daughter - WC Godiva, her dam is by the great Ali Jamaal. Godiva represents the blend of two legends. Nesj El Markhisa is definitely the Royalty in RDS breeding program. A mare who has touched Amira & Eiad in many ways. The beauty she has, so pure.. did not go by unseen in 2017. A year which is very meaningful to them. After her debut in several show in Europe, they decided to take her to the European Championships in Verona. On the lead with Paolo Capecci, Nesj El Markhisa was crowned ‘EUROPEAN GOLD CHAMPION MARE’. Today Markhisa enjoyes her life on the green fields watching over her progeny. Hoping to one day make their debut in the show ring. All Royal Dutch Arabian Stud’s home bred offspring represent their home with the initials RDS.

THE FASCINATION
The Arabian horses are one of the most beautiful creatures. who have captured the hearts of people from all around the globe as they have done with us. They are part of the history as in the old Arab literature describing how Arabian horse embraced great historical figures, prophets, leaders, kings and the love that was given by the Bedouins. The Arabian horse was primarily an instrument of war, as were horses in general in most societies of the time. The Arabian horse was highly importance in the Islamic conquering. The superior qualities of the Arabian horse have insured that it has been preserved as the world’s oldest equine breed. The Arabian horse known as the desert horse adapted to their environment, resulting in qualities that make them unique among all equine breeds. They had learned to survive by adjusting to the heat and a dry environment. This gave them strength over years.. For centuries the Arabian breed has been a family to the humans being taken care of and giving them a home created the Arabian to give their loyalty in return. There is so much more to tell about these incredible creatures. The most fascinating part about them is the pure heart they have and the mind which is willing to work hard for only care and friendship in return..

ECAHO- National JUDGES, The Netherlands Amira, Since beginning of 2016 I have joined the great panel of judges, there is nothing more beautiful than doing what you love doing most. I aim to pass on the importance of maintaining quality and type we have built over the many years and the modern Arabian horse we see these days. Eiad, I have been judging Arabian horses since 2010, it is very important we don’t go down on the quality. we play a big role in educating breeders, new horse enthusiasts etc. You must be gifted with an eye that catches the right beauty of the Arabian horse. A high level of concentration is the key to success in practically everything, as it is for judging. When classes have large number of horses we must stay focused and make sure every horses is equally judged. I am grateful to be on the team of respected judges among us.

EUROPEAN BREEDERS TRUST
As most of you have probably realised, the Arabian Horse Industry in Europe and also other parts of the world are facing extreme problems over the past years. The passion continues but breeders are not capable for continuing with their breeding program caused by several problems, financially, availability of stallions, participating against big farms etc. This means less foals are born, however many of these breeders have had a major role in the Arabian horses we see competing at the top level of our industry. This should be the concern to everyone in the Arabian horse world, it was time to take action. In 2017 TRUST was founded, as for many breeders, Amira & Eiad did not think twice by giving their full support. The initial founders of EBT (Mr. Karl-Heinz Stockle, Mr Gregor Aymar and Dr. Nils Ismer) gathered a group of high quality individuals who all had a long experience within the world of Arabian horses. Amira is incredibly proud to be part of the Supervisory Board, she hopes with EBT to encourage everyone to think together, listen to on another to share the love we have of the Arabian horse and to bring back the highly knowledge European breeders to continue their passion. It was a very special moment for Amira & Eiad on their 10th year anniversary during the Breeders Select Sale in Aachen to donate and embryo out of their best mare, NESJ EL MARKHISA in the auction of which the outcome went to charity. Eiad, The feeling this gave us was indescribable. All we can say is that we feel truly blessed to able to do so.

ild high mountain peaks, deep valleys and plains blooming towards the sea, this is the hinterland of touristic Albania, which has the most beautiful sandy beaches along the sea. They are occasionally interrupted by rocky cliffs, which form almost uninhabited and hardly accessible white bays on the blue sea of the southern Adriatic. And those who think that Albania is still a “workers’ and farmers’ state” do not know Valona (Vlore). This tourist jewel is nowadays populated by Italian visitors and investors, who find a home by the sea there, which reminds them of the Italian region Puglia of the 50’s in terms of its natural beauty and water quality, which stretches barely 150 km away on the other side of the Adriatic coast. We drive south along the beach. Then the jeep turns left into the mountains. On the narrow road two tortoises quickly save themselves from the car. After another three kilometres of serpentine bends, we reach a natural plateau and see the Arabian stud farm owned by Ilir Shyti and Blendi Bani come into view. Above us, an eagle circles, on the ground, wild orchids and in front of me, the horses in the paddocks. I wonder why there are so few Arabian horses in Albania, because the natural environment would be ideal for their breeding.
Looking back to understand the future As in all Balkan countries, oriental stallions influenced horse breeding in Albania during the 500 years of Turkish occupation. The Ottoman Empire, which had also conquered Egypt, had excellent cavalry. Muhammad Ali Pasha, also called Meḥemmed ʿAlī Pāšā, (1769-1849) was born in Kavalar, Northern Greece, but his family came from Albania. History calls him the Albanian Ottoman governor and de facto ruler and King of Egypt from 1805 to 1848. Abbas Pasha I, the Viceroy of Egypt, was famous for his collection of Arabian Horses. He had definitely a preference for the Arabian horses with the fine head and elegant type, which he found only in the southern part of the Arabia, called Nejd. These horses were for the most part the original gene pool for the Straight Egyptians of today.
100 | TUTTO ARABI - www.tuttoarabi.com
STUD At the height of his rule, he controlled Lower Egypt, Upper Egypt, Sudan and parts of Arabia and the entire Levant. He is regarded as the founder of Modern Egypt. His dynasty ruled until the King, Farouk I was overthrown in the Egyptian Revolution of 1952. Farouk I was the tenth ruler of Egypt from the Muhammad Ali Pasha Dynasty and proud of his Albanian heritage. As king, 30 Albanian bodyguards protected him as he regarded Albanians as the only people he could trust with his life. During the whole period of the dynasty until 1952, breeding of Arabian horses played an important role, not only for the cavalry but also especially as status symbol for the ruling class. Six generations later Abbas Hilmi II, (1874 – 1944) reached the throne, following the dynasty founded by Muhammad Ali Pasha. He was called Abbas Pasha II and was obsessed with Arabian horses breeding from their country of origin, the region called Nejd on the Arabian Peninsula. He did everything to import these horses into Egypt. He even hand-wrote a book about his straight Egyptian horses, pedigrees and history, called „The Abbas Pasha Manuscript“. His horses and their offspring have been the root horses of the breed of straight Egyptians in the following years. They mainly entered into the RAS (Royal Agricultural Society) founded in the early 20th Century in Cairo. Later it was called EAO (Egyptian Agricultural Organization).
When King Farouk I in 1952 had to resign after the revolution, his breeding stables Inshass stud with the finest Arabian horses from the Nejd were also transferred to the Egyptian State Stud RAS / EAO and the basics for today’s purely Egyptian Arabian horse breeding was laid. The influence of Abbas Pasha’s Straight Egyptian horses was important throughout the Ottoman Empire, including the land of Albania, as it was a matter of improving cavalry by means of powerful, tough horses with charisma and elegant phenotype. Furthermore, the character of the pure Arabian horses were especially people-oriented and able to create a link of understanding to their riders, which could save their lives. Their influence on horse breeding in the whole Ottoman Empire is widely documented. Still today, many of the Albanian mountain ponies have pretty little heads with a fine mouth and dish. Even before the Second World War, Arabian horses are said to have been used in private studs to improve the breeds. Three-quarters of Albania (the “Land of Eagles”, as it is also called), are high mountains and deep gorges, where without the use of donkeys and horses, even today, transport work and agriculture can only be carried out to a limited extent. Because of political alliances, in 1958 Albania received five purebred Arabian stallions and ten mares from Tersk, the state stud in the former Soviet Union. Also in the 1960’s, according to WAHO (World Arabian Horse Organization) information, a number of Russ-
STUD
ian Arabians were imported from Tersk to the Albanian State Stud Shkroda. In 1996, there were still about 30 purebred Arabians from these lines living in Albania. Later the state stud was closed and the horses were sold. We can presume that Russian Arabians from these old bloodstocks still live in Albania today, but they are no longer recognized by the WAHO as purebred Arabians. Today, the few breeders in the country who want to revive the old tradition of purebred Arabians are trying to re-register their horses with the WAHO, because in the last five years about 50 purebred Arabians have been imported to Albania from other countries, especially from Italy. A strategy is now being worked out to have the Albanian purebred Arabians recognised by the WAHO, probably by having the Italian Arabian Association ANICA as caretaker of the formalities. Later on Albania will take over the organisational business of registration and compliance with the WAHO rules. Now, however, some requirements are still missing in the various small studs, with the exception of LA Arabia’s in Valona, where the entire horse stock already consists of Arabians imported from countries with recognised WAHO breeding associations. For Roland Shyti of LA Arabians, the idea of this stud was a matter of the heart. Today he has passed the ownership of horses and the farm to his son Ilir Shyti and to his friend and collaborator Blendi Bani, who takes care of all matters today.
INTERVIEW WITH ROLAND SHYTI
Mr. Shyti, how did you get the idea to breed Arabian horses of Straight Egyptian bloodlines in Albania? „The love for horses was born very early in my childhood. In the town where I was born and raised, there was a racetrack, where my father took me to see the races of the time. We would go to every horse event that took place. I used to spend my summer holidays in Divjaka and Orikum; in Divjaka there was a protected natural area where there were herds of horses in the wild often went to visit them, but in Orikum there was a well-structured and well-maintained state stud with Arabian horses
102 | TUTTO ARABI - www.tuttoarabi.com
imported from very prestigious international stables. Luckily, for me, a cousin of mine worked there at that time, and he made sure that I could go whenever I wanted to see the horses. During these long visits to the stud farm, I heard for the first time that these were Arab horses, but I did not understand the difference between them and the other races. There I had my first acquaintance with this magnificent and proud animal. So while growing up, I had the dream of having an Arab horse myself. In the 1990s, I visited an old friend of mine, who had collected some of the Arab horses that were left without care and without a stable after the fall of the Dictatorship. However, it should be remembered that during the years of communism 1945 - 1990, Albania had an excellent equestrian tradition and culture. Purebred Arabs were bred and selected, making Albania a large player of this breed. We remember in Shkodra
STUD
there was the Institute of Equine Studies and Breeding, as well as in Orikum and many other farms spread in our country“. Straight Egyptians are a rarer and more particular line because their value refers not only to their phenotype but also to their history, recorded in their pedigree. You are the only breeders of the Straight Egyptians in Albania. Why did you make this choice? „When I was later able to buy an Arab horse myself, I read many books and came to the conclusion that the Straight Egyptian (SE) Arab is the most distinctive of the original Arab lines. Another impact on me in choosing this particular horse was the fact that King Farouk of Egypt was a lover and breeder of this breed. King Farouk had distant Albanian origins and I saw this possibility to keep the tradition in my own way. Among the different stables where I had contacts, was also one in the Czech Republic. From there I took my first three horses. Then my research, not to say odyssey, began to start the breeding of the Straight Egyptians Arabs in Albania. In this initiative, my dear friend, the architect Blendi Bani, sustained me. He is also a great lover of these horses and supported me to realize the project and to import the horses into Albania.
From those days, the horses became a very important part of our lives. After some time we got to know other breeders in Italy, Germany and Belgium and continued to import excellent horses to our farm, which are now the corner stones of an important breeding project. Now there are around 20 Straight Egyptian Arabians in our stables and some foals are still being born. We are the only breeding stud in Albania with the aim of preserving the purity of the Arabian breed in the best way, engaging only horses in breeding that represent the historical Egyptian bloodlines, but also with excellent type and athletic skills. So in addition to our passion we must bring back and take care of the tradition that our country has had in the past by breeding and selecting Arabian horses. This tradition was forgotten after the fall of the communist dictatorship in 1990“. What are your plans for the future? „Another of our goals is to make our breeding farm become an organizer of equestrian events, shows, and cultural activities around the Arabian horses. We hope that after Albania’s entry into the European Union, our horses can also be traded in other countries“.

STUD
EVERY HORSE AT LA ARABIANS HAS A PERSONAL STORY TO TELL.
As Roland Shyti told us in his interview, the first three horses at the stud came overland from the Czech Republic to Valona in Southern Albania. The successful breeder and endurance rider Marina Novotna sold him the colt Kamaal AQ and the two young mares Sharifah AQ and Dorri AQ. However, that was not enough for Roland Shyti, Ilir Shyti and Blendi Bani to start breeding. Roland Shyti read everything he could find about breeding Straight Egyptians. Now new mares and fillies were sought, according to certain criteria. Ansata lines and the gene pool of Dr. Nagel’s Katharinenhof should lay the foundation for a good offspring. Many studs in Kuwait and Qatar were already successful with this concept. Why should they not be successful in Albania as well? Therefore, it is not surprising that especially mares from the Dahman Shahwan strain were sought. At the same time, large stables were built and suitable grooms were sought, which was much more difficult than finding good horses. Finally, it was decided to import the following brood mares: THE MARES AT LG ARABIANS Sharifah AQ (*2015) is a young athletic mare by Serene Farid, a son of Salaa El Dine, bred by Dr. Nagel, out of Sharifa Al Kadir by Halim Al Kadir, a famous son of Ansata Ibn Halima. Sharifah AQ is tracing to the Hadban Enzahi strain. She had her first foal in 2019 by Malik El Nile, called LG Kadir (*2019). Dorri AQ (*2014) is a daughter of Sheikh El Sherif, who was bred by Jarrell McCracken in Texas. He ist he half-brother of the legendary stallions Ruminaja Ali and Alidaar, but after he was sold to Florida, he was mainly forgotten. This excellent stallion was in 2010 exported to Marina Novotna in the Czech Republic. He produced for her a number of outstanding foals. One was Dorri AQ, out of Farida AQ, a mare of the Kuhailan Rodan strain. In 2018, Dorri AQ gave to LA Arabians the nice filly LG Aisha (*2018) by Kamaal AQ and in 2020 again a wonderful filly with the name LG Shaha (*2020).
104 | TUTTO ARABI - www.tuttoarabi.com
DORRI AQ With four years of age, Persja Al Qusar (*2013) arrived in LG Stables from Al Qusar stud in Germany. She is as well belonging to the Dahman Shahwan strain, tracing to the Farida strain. Her grand dam is the famous Ansata Princessa by Prince Fa Moniet. She is by show champion SI Sidi Rayyan by Turki Al Rayyan - Ashhal Al Rayyan. The bay mare Shariha Pasha (*2013) came from Italy to the stables in Albania. Her sire is Ibn Emir Sinan by Ansata Emir Sinan. She is out of the bay mare Princess Pasha, bred by Dr. Girolamo Dibenedetto in Sicily. She gave to her new owners three wonderful fillies in the last four years: LG Afra (*2017) by Radhjai Ouhara, LG Habiba (*2018) by Kamaal AQ and LG Azra (*2019), sired as well by Kamaal AQ. Shariha Pasha belongs to the Dahman Shahwan strain and is tracing to famous Kamar – Sabah family. TB Jaleelah (*2014) by Nil Del Guado, out of Jasline, was as well imported from Italy. She was bred by Tre Balzane Stud in Umbria and belongs to the Dahman Shawan strain. She is tracing to the famous Ansata Bint Bukra, the foundation mare of Ansata Stud in the USA. Her first foal at LG Arabians was LG Amira (*2020) by Kamaal AQ.
STUD
SHARIFAH AQ TB Shirin (*2017) was as well imported from Tre Balzane stud in Italy. Her sire is NK Mahir by Safir Al Rayyan. Her dam is Diva Shalima, an Adnan granddaughter. She belongs to the Dahman Shahwan strain, tracing to Kamar – Sabah family. This year she might be covered for the first time. TB Hekaya (*2018) was sired by Rayyan Al Naif by Ashhal Al Rayyan out of Ansata Aya Nadira, Bint Bukra Family. Her dam is the Obayan mare TB Heba, an important root mare at Tre Balzane stud, tracing to Marah, one of the foundation mares of Dr. Nagel’s Katharinenhof. TB Maha (*2018) is one of the most typiest daughters of international Show Champion and Junior SE World Champion, Naseem Al Rashediah. She arrived from Tre Balzane stud in 2019. Her dam is TB Muneera by TB Hafid El Nil and out of Mia Mouna by Salaa El Dine. LaDiva Noaa (*2015) came from LaDiva Stud in Belgium to Albania. She is the daughter of Sahib, one of the best sons of Salaa El Dine. Her dam CD Anasta by Safeen is the corner stone at La Diva stud.

LADIVA NOAA COLTS AND STALLIONS AT LG ARABIANS Kamaal AQ (*2014) was the last son of the 1991 in the USA born mare Orient Queen. She was a daughter of Alidaar and an important brood mare of the Dahman Shahwan family, tracing to Kamar and El Dahma (1880), the famous root mare of Ali Pasha Sharif. His sire was Ansata Nile Echo by Ansata Hejazi, out of Ansata White Nile. He was one of the most important Ansata stallions in Europe and the Middle East. His offspring is much requested because he is a successful Show Champion producer. Kamaal AQ produced some very nice foals in the stables of LA Arabians. LaDiva Omar (*2017) is a typey son of Ansata Nile Echo, out of CD Anasta by Safeen. He will support in the future his half-brother Kamaal AQ as stallion in the stables of LG Arabians.

KAMAAL AQ TB Farouk (*2018) is the son of Jamil Al Rayyan by Ansata Hejazy. He is an outstanding type producer with many champion foals in the world. His dam is the Tre Balzane root mare TB Helwa by Ibn El Nil. She is belonging to the Obayan strain, tracing to Marah, one of the foundation mares at Nagel’s stud in Germany. TB Farouk is the full brother to the Gold Champion filly TB Fayza. Malik El Nile (*2005), son of Ansata Najdi and out of AM Alia El Nile by Al Kidir, was a very successful Endurance horse, winning many races. He was never disqualified for lameness and with his 15 years now, he is still a perfect riding horse in the farm. Roland liked as well his Ansata Pedigree and tried him as stallion, with success. His first foals are of very good quality.

For next year, the LG Arabians team is planning an Open House event and would like to invite interested breeders from all over the world. It is definitely worth it. However,
visitors should also take a few days to get to know the country and its people and especially its breath-taking nature, along the coasts and in the mountains.

owards the 1990ies, the American business model of „Arabian Horse Shows“ arrived in Western Europe. The market thrived and many breeders went to buy horses in the USA, importing with them the methods and know-how of the American show world. The classic European progeny inspection and stallions licence show, serving to evaluate and judge breeding horses and their offspring, was gradually replaced by a cat walk, called SHOW, where horses mainly exhibit their spur-ofthe-moment beauty. In France, they were two-minded about it at that time. On the one hand, there was a strong focus on riding: flat races for Arabian horses were held, the endurance sport started emerging strongly, and there were innovative forms of events intended to highlight the versatility of the Arabian horse, such as the „Arabissimo“ heptathlon
comprising seven different contests for Arabians, including race, show, dressage and endurance. On the other hand, the show scene blossomed in France, culminating in the invention of the first big title show: the World Championships in Paris. In Italy, the Arabian Horse breeding was flourishing as well. Italians love beauty, aesthetics, and harmony, in many cases this aspect has more importance than functionality. Which was why Arabian shows started achieving success with the public quite early on. Trainers featuring know-how as well as show experience were sought after, and when the news got around that a Frenchman had arrived in orthern Italy who was able to successfully present Arabian horses for shows and had also been trained in the US, there was great interest in him.

This Frenchman however, who was Franck Boetto, was not the common sort of handler, not the one just hotly eager to win with his horses. First and foremost, Franck was an Arabian horse enthusiast and lover, a real connoisseur, as well as an excellent rider. He knew what makes Arabians tick, ridden as well as in-hand. He was able to assess the horses' character and to tailor his training concept to that, invariably based on creating trust not fright in training a horse. „ Horses need to be taken seriously“ he used to say, and when he set himself a task, he would work on it consistently until he had succeeded. „ At that time, what we talked about with the owners were their horses, and not the money these horses were meant to earn for them“. Franck is fully entitled to his reputation as „ a man who knows how to read horses“, however there are many show enthusiasts among the fans ofArabian horses who ask: „ Is it possible to teach a horse the stand-up for the show in a
peaceful way? Franck Boetto: „ I think so, yes. There are different reasons why trainers will often resort to pressing as one means ofinstilling respect or rather fright in a horse. It is faster than any of the soft methods based on trust and success by repetition and praise. Most trainers do not have enough time at their hands. But there is also the argument that the way horses are required to present their stand-ups today ought to be trimmed back, in favor of a more natural pose which would enable the judges to assess the horse more easily and correctly, in my opinion. There are quite a lot of screws that might need to be adjusted in order to improve the horses' situation in the show ring and make training more sustainable in a positive sense. “ Franck Boetto is a communicative person expressing lots of creative ideas. A „ Clinic for Handlers“ was one of these ideas he frequently shaped, with his ambition being improving the world for the horses. That clinic would be a training center for young people, for breeders and owners, and for others who wish to go more professional in their

„ Arabian horse“ hobby. And indeed, together with the Italian Marco Capelli the „ Clinic for Handlers“ seminars have been conducted in many countries. In immersion courses of3 days each, young men and women were trained as handlers in practice and in theory. It was not only about empathy for the horse's behaviour in the ring and its presentation, but also the EACHO show rules were applied. I was there when he trained youngsters with great success at El Zahraa State Stud in Cairo, as well as in Yazd in Iran, in many places in Italy and other European countries.
In terms of Arabian breeding it still has two royal studs where pure blood breeding has been practised for 300 years. These horses embody the original desert horses and ofcourse you can see a big difference to our show horses of today.
Today, Franck Boetto works as Stud Manager of Al Rashediah Farm in Bahrain on the Persian/Arabian Gulf.
"The first thing I did was put together a team, which started to do the urgent work with me. I have two Dutch collaborators and some grooms from around the stud farm. Everyone was given tasks with clear goals. We developed a plan and the first thing we did was to adjust the nutrition of the horses in a tailor-made way. Then we developed training units and started the training with the young horses.
I TERVIEW How is your life in Bahrain? "For Europeans, living in the Gulfis ofcourse a big change, but I can say that compared to other places at the Gulf, Bahrain is a very tolerant country, known for its relative freedoms in relation to the lives ofall the people there.
Talking about my work at Rashediah Farm, we are able to offer the horses a good life, despite the heat. "
When you got there, what was the first thing you did?
In the stallion stable the boxes were separated by high walls, we partly dismantled them so that the stallions learned to communicate with each other, which finally brought peace to the stable.

I also integrated some veterinarians into the team, so that the work at the stallion station is done in close cooperation with the team's goals. !ot only that, but we also carried out all the manual work restoring the stables and I can say that I am very satisfied, even proud, ofthe overall result. The owner, Mr. Abdulrahman Al Jasmi and his son Rashed Al Jasmi love their horses and do everything to make sure they are doing well. I am very grateful to them for the freedom I have here. My old friend Eileen Verdieck, whom I met the first time in Menton in 1992, and to whom I owe as much, is employed here as general manager and we work together on fair concepts for breeding, keeping and showing the horses ofthe Rashediah farm. "
How come you've been working with horses all your life? "I have always had a great passion for horses, as a child I was allowed to ride the stallion of friends, which impressed many who had great respect for this rather untrained horse.
We were poor back then and my parents sent me to the mountains during the holidays, where I rode everything I could find, including donkeys and mules. When I was old enough, I was able to buy a mare for myself. I worked as a trainer of Paint horses and presented them on shows. When I once saw an Arabian stallion at a big horse show in Marseille, I knew this was the horse I had always dreamed of and from that time on I knew which horses I wanted to work with. The stallion was called Forex and belonged to Richard Philstrom. We became friends and through him and his wife Cecile Dupret I got to know the world of the Arabian Shows. Finally I managed to buy a young stallion from Richard with whom I trained daily and eventually became national champion. This was a marker in the show scene that did not go unobserved. I got good horses and various job offers and won a number of championship titles. Finally I decided to give up my job as a fireman and to fully enter the Arabian scene as a trainer. This was not easy, because I also had

bad experiences with owners who did not pay a salary and others with many ideas but no money, so that I had to secure my livelihood by other jobs again. I became a lumberjack, groom, worked in the trade, but after work I daily trained my arab because my goal was to present it in Paris at the world championship. It was difficult to organize my dream without money, but somehow I managed to do it. The competition in Paris was already big in the mid 80s. Famous stallions and mares from Poland, from Jordan, from many countries were the competitors. But still, my stallion and I made it into the top five. I was incredibly proud. "
And which adventure happened next? I worked for various studs until I had an accident and seriously injured my knee. The dream of being a successful trainer and showman was over for several years. I was still able to do standups with the horses, but Icould not run with them anymore.
I didn't want to leave the world of Arabian horses and after long time I could train and ride the horses again. Finally I decided to go to Canada to perfect my riding. The planned two weeks became a few years. There I met my wonderful teacher Diane Leduc, who rode at the highest level Reining and Western Pleasure tournaments. In 1992 I received an offer from Italy to train the black stallion Coaltown, who had been bought in the USA by a partnership of breeders. That was my start there and after Coaltown I worked with success at various studs. Together with my long time girlfriend Rita Montalbano I finally managed to establish my own training center there. The photographer Gigi Grasso took over the marketing and media work for our project. We had a great time with many successes in the show ring in Italy and most other countries in Europe, but also in Israel, the Gulf countries, although I couldn't run with the horses as fast as I used to, but I was able to compensate this by using body language communication with the horses.

I have always tried to show that Arabian horses not only look good in the show ring, but also have very special qualities under the saddle because of their intelligence and sensitivity. Whoever knew how to ride them could win every competition with them. I was lucky to know and to work with so many people in the world who knew a lot about horses and friendship. This has always strengthened me and motivated me to continue.
Haven't many young people come to you to learn from your experience? I remember that becoming a horse trainer was a dream job in the 90s. That became even more
so when the studs moved from Gulf to the show world of Europe. Were you able to pass on your experience? Yes, I was able to use my know-how in the "Clinic for Handlers" seminars to train young people. Many worldfamous trainers of today started in my seminars or were placed by me as interns in other training stables all over the world. I am happy that I also had such success in my role as an influential teacher. This gives my career another meaning that is important to me.
Franck, we thank you for the interesting conversation and wish you all the best for the future.

XXX JUNIOR ARABIAN HORSE SPRING SHOW IN BIAŁKA, POLAND Text: Tomasz Hebda - Photos by: Ewa Imielska-Hebda
On the 04-05 of July 2020 we had a pleasure to take part in Junior Arabian Horse Spring Show in Białka, Poland. It was the 30 edition of the spring show, which has become a tradition to many arabian horse breeders, owners and admirers. On the beautiful and green premises of Białka State Stud (one of the main three State Studs in Poland), we could admire the beauty and elegance of polish arabian horses, especially the junior ones. Białka Spring Show traditionally starts the Polish Arabian Horse show season in Poland and therefore it is always an event that everyone is waiting for. Białka State Stud is a very special place - peaceful, green, beautiful with atmosphere that is always very friendly and welcoming. And so it was also this time.
The Show was indeed a succesfull one and the organisers did a really good job to make it happen and to make the gathered audience satisfied. Althought the global covid-19 pandemic forced the organisers to limit the amount of people in the audience because of the safety measures, the show was also aired online by the Arabian Essence TV. All classes were very well represented and the handlers did their best to show the unique beauty and special qualities of Polish Arabian Horses that entered the show ring. It was indeed a pleasant and wonderful weekend and we had a unique chance to see many beautiful polish arabian horses also the younger ones competing in the show, and we just can’t wait to see their development and succeses in the near future. q

Eventing & Showjumping by Talitha Bakker z photos by Reindert Jansen
Eventing is the ultimate test of a horse and rider – comprising three disciplines – Dressage, Cross Country and Show Jumping, the scores from each combine to produce an overall total. Eventing (sometimes known as Horse Trials) takes place over one, two and three days depending on the level of competition – evolving from the training of cavalry horses the sport is rather like a pentathlon in that it combines different disciplines in one competition and is run on a cumulative penalty basis. Eventing demands of the competitor considerable experience in all branches of equitation and a precise knowledge of the horse’s ability and of the horse a degree of competence resulting from intelligent and rational training. It covers all round riding ability and horsemanship: the harmony between horse and rider that characterize
Dressage; the contact with nature, precise knowledge of the horses’ ability and extensive experience essential for the Cross Country; the precision, agility and technique involved in Jumping. Eventing is one of the three disciplines in competition at the Olympic Games, the other two being Jumping and Dressage. Modern competitions consist of three distinct tests: Dressage, Cross-Country and Jumping. they take place on separate consecutive days during which a competitor rides the same horse throughout. 1. Dressage Test - After an opening Horse Inspection, a Dressage test is performed, the object of which is the harmonious development of the physique and ability of the horse. e test consists of a series of compulsory movements at walk, trot and canter gaits, within a rectangular arena 60 m.

long and 20 m. wide. To perform a good Dressage test, the horse needs to be flexible and fluid. To keep the strong Eventing horses under firm control required by the exacting Dressage movements involves great knowledge and understanding. A good Dressage test lays the foundation for the rest of the competition and horses that are found wanting in this phase face an uphill struggle to get up amongst the prize-winners. 2. Cross-Country Test - the focus of the entire event is on the Cross-Country test, the objective of which is to test the ability of athletes and horses to adapt to different and variable conditions (weather, terrain, obstacles, footing etc...) and jumping ability of the horse, while at the same time demonstrating the rider’s knowledge of pace and the use of his horse. Exceeding the time allowed and refusals result in penalties. All penalties are added together and recorded for inclusion in the final classification. Fall of a horse and/or of a rider entails immediate elimination. 3. Jumping Test - e Jumping test takes place on the last day after a second Horse Inspection. Riders may voluntarily retire their horses if they seem unfit to continue. This test is run in reverse order of merit and its main objective is to prove that the horses have retained their suppleness, energy and obedience in order to jump a course of 11 to 15 obstacles. The winning individual is the competitor with the lowest total of penalty points. The winning team is the one with the 176 | TUTTO ARABI - www.tuttoarabi.com

lowest total of penalty points, after adding together the final scores of the three highest placed competitors in the team. All horses and riders need to build up their levels of skill, the sport has different levels of competition ranging from Intro classes, to Pre-Novice, Novice, Intermediate and Advanced. As horses progress through each level gaining points and experience the level of the competition increases. It is one of very few sports where professionals and amateurs compete on a level playing field with even the most experienced riders having to start at the lower levels with the young horses. Eventing is an Olympic discipline and is amongst just a handful of sports where men and women are considered entirely equal there are no distinctions or single sex classes. Before anyone decides to take up eventing, they will need a good range of basic riding skills and a high level of horsemanship. Horsemanship is important in eventing, where so much is being asked of the horse – a true partnership. Therefore, the rider must be able to communicate easily and openly with their horse. Once a good level of riding has been acquired, the rider will need to learn how to jump, if they do not know how to do so already. They will also need to study dressage and the range of manoeuvres they will be expected to perform – which can be anything other than the very highest level movements.

SPECIAL
Once the individual components have been mastered, the rider must start putting them together. They will need to train in such a way that their work in, say, the cross country element, does not leave them too tired to be able to compete properly in the dressage. As well as riding skills, a three day eventer will need to work on their general fitness and stamina levels to ensure that they do not become fatigued in a competition. Do not forget that in most cases, men and women compete on equal terms at eventing. Although this is testament to the ability of female riders, it does mean that they will have to work particularly hard at building up stamina and strength while men may have to concentrate on their grace and elegance when riding. The horse too will need to be well trained for a three day event. At lower levels, any horse can be used in competition. But it must always be well-conditioned. However, as the levels get higher, the horse will need to be a thoroughbred to compete convincingly as these have the maximum athleticism and stability. It is here that the Arabian Horse is at its best though they lack in height and sometimes jumping technique. The horse must be trained to listen to its rider at all times. It needs to listen well to be able to perform the many and varied things in an elegant and careful manner. In cross country particularly, the horse must be a good listener because the risk of falling is so much higher. A perfect jumping ability is not usually necessary, although the horse must be competent and con dent at the jumps. Three-day, and indeed one-day, eventing is an arduous sport, because of the disciplines. be better to concentrate their e orts on the individual disciplines alone. ese too are hard work, but can be more recreational at lower levels, than the time consuming three-day eventing. Once the rider and horse are good prepared, Eventing is one of the most exciting discipline in the equestrian riding. It is also a lot of fun and gives a true bonding with your horse. Eventing is also a discipline during the European Arabian horse sport championships. With its various jumps, it is a great one to watch as a spectator as well. For those that are not comfortable yet to do a complete 3-days-eventing can also choose to do a cross country practice. ese are organized everywhere in the world and are being organized to give more con dence and experience to horse and rider. It is often without time and you can ride the cross country route more than once, so you have the time to let your horse be familiar with all the variety of jumps. Especially the water can sometimes give an extra challenge to the ride! Despite the risks for horse and rider, Eventing is a very popular sport with a great atmosphere and a lot of fun! I myself am performing eventing with my mare ASE Falaree (Fadi al Shaqab x Dakaree) and have performed in the past with Manilah (Radamess II x Marischka) and the stallion Jazzmeen (Essteem x Jasmyne). I am performing on the lower level which is challenging enough for me! Besides the three day eventing, we also do one day eventing where all the three disciplines are on the same day. These are all low till medium level of events where you find all kind of breeds! It is fun and if you are into jumping, it is really recommended to try it out! q

Herbs for Horses
by Domenico Bergero, Cynthia Préfontaine photos by Gigi Grasso, Javan
In the last years, herbal products underwent a great increase of their distribution both in the human and veterinary medicine, particularly in the horse market. This fact can be ascribed to different factors: a sort of growing suspicion in the use of traditional drugs and an increase in the horses’ health perception. For this reason nowadays is worldwide diffused the use of a great variety of products, mainly dietary supplements and nutraceuticals, containing herbal products or extracts essentially claimed to enhance horses’ welfare and increase performances. In human and veterinary medicine there is an increasing interest to find new natural substances, mainly herbal derivates, that improve biological function and increase the body health. Herbs are considered a very important resource as healthpromoting substances. The idea of using special vegetable based foods and other plant material for health promotion is nothing new. Hippocrates (400 B.C.) is reported to have said “Let food be your medicine and medicine be your food”. However the concept that herbal supplement are natural and - then - safe is fallacious. A presumption of safety derives from a history of exposure to the agent as a part of normal diet or a part of long-term practice. Several factor are believed to contribute to the increasing trend of herbal utilization: the owner desire of being an active part in horse’s care, the easy accessibility on the supplement market and the perception that herbs are safer because natural is synonymous of welfare. Nowadays a large number of natural products, with varying
190 | TUTTO ARABI - www.tuttoarabi.com
structures and different mechanisms of activities, have been reported and hundreds of phytochemicals have been identified, even if studies on how this compounds act have just begun. More and more evidences have been produced about the importance of studying herbal products to identify their real effect and, more important, the absence of undesired side effects. In fact there is a lack of specific legislation that regulates the classification, marketing and safety evaluation of animal herbal supplements. The absence of common regulatory control over herbal products have two effects: from one hand, it is hard to recognize good products from others that are of very poor quality; from the other, the consumer could be sometime exposed to the risk of intoxication.
Plants uses
Apart of the use of ready-to -use supplements available on the market, it is possible to use fresh plants (them often), dry plants or mother tinctures (maceration of plants in cider vinegar or alcohol to extract active principles) that we can mix to the ration, the water or/and clay. Herbal derivates can be offered to horses in different ways: - Mixed it in the food, or in the water. - Put less in the bowl at a time to be sure that your animal will drink or eat them comletely. - Put directly in the months. - Sprinkle on the hair on a accessible area on the animal where he is able to lick himself.

Manufacturing techniques We will list here a series of recipes on “how to prepare your own plant derivate”. Use these directions under the advice of a veterinarian. Garlic mother tincture Fill a pot with 1⁄2 to 2/3 of chopped garlic. Cover with apple cider vinegar till 1 inch from the top of the pot. Keep in a dark and dry place and stir up often After 1 to 2 mouths maceration, filter. Put back in a recipient and let it decants To bottom of the pot can be recycled for your personal needs as salad dressed. Camphor oil 250 ml peanuts or olive oil (cold pressed) 2 to 4 squares of camphor (available in pharmacy) depending on your need Gently warm the camphor in a bit of oil (take an empty and clean conserve’s can to save your cauldron) When the camphor is melted, put the rest of thee oil and mix. We use 4 squares if we want to warm. For example in case of arthritis, stretched ligament, etc. We use 2 squares to soften a cyst. Insect’s hunter 1⁄2 ounce of laurel or cedar-tree essential oil 1⁄2 ounce of Mentha pulegium essential oil 1 ounce of citronella essential oil 5 ml of garlic mother tincture 12 ounces of sunflower essential oil Mix everything Vaporize over the animal or rub him for some days. This liquid stays on the animal many days. Activated charcoal Ointment 1 part of olive oil 1 part of bee’s wax 1 part of activated charcoal some drops of pine or/and fir-tree essential oils For a sulphur ointment use to same recipe but put 1/2 part of sulphur instead of the activated charcoal. Sulphur ointment 1 part of sulphur in powder 10 part of saindoux Stirrup strongly Indicated in case of scabies, fungi, wound or infections. Sanguinaria canadensis - Bloodroot mother tincture For grave and chronic lung troubles 1 to 2 Sanguinaria roots, (about 2 tablespoons more then less)

26 ounces of gin Macerate 1 month before using it The root most stay in the gin Give mother tincture in water (20 cc one time a day directly in the mouth or in the ration). Applied therapies for animals Immunity It is common opinion that sport horses are periled to different stress which can deteriorate the immune response. Immune system activity depends on several factors, such as nutrition and physical activity. In particular the protein depletion includes a loss of capacity of several essential functions of the immune system or the respiratory tract. Furthermore, strenuous or incorrect exercise has been recognized as a stressful condition, which can significantly alter the host’s immune response and its susceptibility to disease. If moderate training generally has beneficial effects on host defence mechanisms, high-intensity exercise and over-training might impair it. Aging and travelling stress are also known to affect immune function. Older horses had reduced immune function, but were more resistant to exercise-induced immune suppression than younger horses. Many herbal based products report as a claim on the label: “Improves immune system”; most of them contain nutrients, e.g. vitamins, and herbal extracts such as Echinacea. Echinacea is a flowering plants of the Asteraceae Family, native of eastern North America. The genus name is from the Greek echino, meaning “hedgehog”, a reference to the spiny central disk. The species traditionally used are: Echinacea angustifolia (Narrow-leaf Coneflowe), Echinacea pallida (Pale Purple Coneflower), Echinacea purpurea (Purple Coneflower). Echinacea has been attributed the ability to boost the body’s immune system and protect the body against infections. The roots, the leaves or the whole plant may be used in the dietary supplement preparation. Echinacea may be best know as an immuno-stimulant in healthy or in immuno-suppressed animals. Herbs in respiratory diseases Herbs had been used to treat with success in treating chronic respiratory diseases in horses. Pearson reach to goal in 2004 as many before with a mix containing: Aillum sativum (garlic), Eupatorium perfoliatum (boneset), Marrubium vulgare (white horehound), Sambucus nigra (Black Elder), Hyssopus officinalis (hyssop). Its obvious that a lot still needs to be done to know about all the mechanism involve in the process. It is also well known, on anecdotic basis, that owners putting fir-tree branch on the floor of horses box to prevent or help the respiratory system healing process. It could be a nice suggestion to use when it when shipping or travelling with

The way to prepare it is this one: macerate for 1 mouth in 26 ounces of gin,1-2 blood-root roots. Arthritis Taraxacum officinalis (dandelion), Harpagophytum procumbens (devil’s claw), Symphytum officinalis (comfrey), Arctium lappa (burdock), Urtica dioica (stinging nettle) composed herbal abstract had been studied with successful results in osteo-arthritis. Dermatitis Flaxseed (Linum usitatissinum) supplementation resulted in a significant reduction in the area of the lesions caused by subcutaneous culicoides extract injection in different studies.

Improving performance

that can improve the athletic performance in general. One of the most widespread herbal product well known for its multipurpose use in the horse is garlic. Garlic is one of the first plant called “performance-enhancing” agents. In fact, garlic was fed to ancient Greek athletes before they competed, because it was associated with strength and work capacity. Garlic is used as an ingredient or supplement in a number of feedstuffs. However, there are some preliminary studies that report garlic toxicity for horses. In particular horses consuming increasing amounts of freeze-dried garlic (FDG) had haematological findings that were indicative of Heinz body anaemia. Then, in absence of regulatory control over garlic inclusion rates it exits a potential risk for intoxication when commercial garlic products are used especially in particular condition such as debilitated horses. Other products are promoted as multi-purpose performance enhancers and contain Schizandra chinensis. Schizandra bail (Schizandraceae family) is a plant that grows wild in far Eastern countries. It is used traditionally as adapting aid that is able to assist the normalization of body system function altered by stress rather than exerting a stimulatory effect. Schisandra exhibits a remarkable effect on the physical performance of race horses in particular on speed heart rate, quick recovery respiratory frequency and lower lactate values. Furthermore it accelerates the recovery of muscular metabolism.
Some “naturals” tools and their properties
Apple cider vinegar As clays and garlic, the cider vinegar has an important herbs supporter that you could use in many circumstances. In term of mineral, it contains mainly potassium (K), calcium (Ca), iron (Fe), magnesium (Mg), sulphur (S). As to vitamins it has: A,E,B1, B2, B6. It also contains essential acids. The apple cider vinegar can be used as a de-worming agent, a depurator, anti-inflammatory (internal and external), adjuvant, anti-acid, anti-septic, re-mineralising agent, Ph equilibrator and arthritis fighter. It have been observed in England, in racing horse’s field, to increase energy, diminish stress and reinforcing tendon and articulations. This vinegar can give a shiny, soft and healthy condition to the animal’s hairs and its mainly true for horses. Ricinus oil, Edgar Cayce method This is used in many situations and it has users for example in: arthritis, bursitis, tendonitis, diverticulitis, chronic constipation, endometriosis, firbrome, cysts, back pain and adherence’s healing process. By itself, the ricinus oil is an excellent heat conductor and an emollient (against irritation). It will increase blood circulation and moreover with heat source. Saturate of oil a tissue, triple thickness, and apply a message directly on your animal. It’s possible to use the pure oil or 194 | TUTTO ARABI - www.tuttoarabi.com
a combination with essentials oil like eucalyptus (reduce inflammation), lavender (relaxing), thymus (tonic, antiseptic). A general recipe is: 4 parts ricinus oil added with 1 part of essential oil. For animals, ricinus oils can also be camphorate with camphor oil to help warming and penetrating the skin (see a recipe below in manufacturing techniques). At this mixture add 250 ml of ricinus oil softly warmed and use it for specific needs. It can be trustily used for many mouths.
Activated wood coal
The activated wood coal properties are: cleaner, absorbent, diarrhoea controller, antiseptic, anti- poison. For a horses, a suggested dosage can be, 1⁄4 to 1/3 cup, 1 to 5 time a day. Activate wood coal could lead to dry up the milk of your animal. q

BLOODLINE
Founder and owner of Al Jood Stud, Mohamed Jaidah values the inclusion of underused or rare blood into the gene pool of the modern Arabian horse. The story starts in 2011, a time in which a connection was made. Mohamed found a young and promising star at Kehilan Arabians in the United States of America, a nearly 3-year-old colt at the time named MARAJH KA. Inspired by the Middle Eastern and Global breeding of the Arabian horse, a vision was put into motion. Marajh KA, an aspiring 2008 born straight Egyptian colt was selected to put his theories on improving pedigrees into practice by ensuring a variety of exotic bloodlines among the newly founded Al Jood collection. The bloodlines of Marajh KA are not typically available in the Middle East, so this would create an ideal base to ensure a strong future of the program in Qatar. Marajh KA from a young age always resembled the classic look of the desert Arabian, a combination on type, great overall structure

with a beautiful upright shoulder and well-shaped neck. Leading to his beautifully sculptured face, showcasing his bright big black eyes and refined muscle. Marajh is one of those individuals that will ensure you know he has arrived, with his snorty attitude, prancing towards you with his tail set beautifully high towards the sky. A true sight to be seen! www.tuttoarabi.com - TUTTO ARABI | 199

His sire: Makhnificient KA Marajh’s sire, Makhnificent exhibits all the traits desired in the classis Egyptian Arabian, that beautifully sculptured face which he has since birth, a smooth body and topline, perfect length of hip and croup which are hard to beat. Traits he has consistently given to his sons and daughters, which can be seen clearly in Marajh KA and his offspring as well. He truly shines as a producer, something that seems to be consistent in his pedigree and next generation. Proven to give great bodies and smooth toplines in his foals - a contribution not only from *Sultann, but also from his maternal grandsire Ibn Dahmahn who was body perfect. In addition, Maknificent produces big eyes as well which comes through from his esteemed dam, Star Bint Hafiza an exotic small bay mare that exudes those

mysterious black eyes alongside her floating movement, very reminiscent of her gorgeous grandmother the grand Dahmah Shawaniah. A truly classical beauty, Star Bint also carries the blood of The Egyptian Prince for large expressive eyes and smooth bodies combined with *Tuhotmos for charisma, expression and desert dryness. So perhaps unsurprisingly, as one foal after another by Maknificent slid out onto the ground and looked up at us with that intense expression and short, dishy face, it was apparent that he was ready to proof his siring ability. Even more consistent than Makhsous, Makhnificent KA adds type, tippy ears, big eyes, smooth bodies and beautiful faces which can be seen to near perfection in his son Marajh KA and the next generation.

His dam: Marquisah KA Marajh’s dam, Marquisah KA is one of those mares who when you see her – your heart skips a beat! She is an ethereal mare with huge black kohl lined eyes and a delightful expression! Her dam Rahimah KA was without a doubt one of the best producing mares at Kehilan Arabians for many years. Her bloodlines are quite unique – while Nabiel is very well known she also brought forward the Bint El Nile female line as well as the chiseled stallion Tuhotmos (and breeding her to Makhnificent KA to produce Marajh KA doubled the line to Tuhotmos in which the bay offspring of this family often carry a resemblance to Tuhotmos in the huge eyes and detailed chiseling) Another gem found in her dam line is that of Rawayeh the dam of El Mareekh. She produced two full sisters – one chestnut and one grey by Marquis I. They are both exquisite and both have
Marajh KA
202 | TUTTO ARABI - www.tuttoarabi.com
proven to be top notch producers with offspring in breeding programs around the world. They are also quite different in phenotype. The chestnut - Simpli Iresistibl is tall and stretchy with a strong resemblance to her dam. Whilst Marquisah was aptly named for her sire – Marquis I. Marquis attributes much of his classic looks to not only his exotic alabaster sire Makhsous (and Marajh KA is double Makhsous) – but also to his stunning dam Antigua Dance. She was a daughter of Ruminaja Bahjat. One of the full siblings to Ruminaja Ali and Alidaar. Bahjat was known for siring extremely beautiful broodmares. Antigua was no exception. Her dam line included such greats as Ansata Shah Zaman and Talal with a tail female to Venus through Samiha. Marquisah has the same fairy tale quality that Marquis exudes, they are the horses the poet would describe the
Prince riding. So refined and chiseled while exhibiting power and elegance at the trot. Tail high, floating above the ground. Zero question as to her origins – she is a Desert Queen! We knew Marquisah was special from birth. She was so delicate and her face from front on was all eyes and nostrils! Turned loose at the farm she will mesmerize those watching her with her charisma and. Besides her son, Marajh she also has a daughter that Kehilan has retained the beautiful Layla KA by Makhnificent KA – a full sister to Marajh KA. She is now on of their top breeding mares. Do not let the fairy tale beauty of Marquisah fool you however! She is without a doubt a prima donna and demands her way in the pasture with the other broodmares! She knows she is special – after all her admirers have told her so for over 18 years!

MonZen’s Oil Paintings Born in Paris, I was fortunate to spend every summer in Asia until I was 13. I would stay with my grandparents at the foot of Yu-Shan, the jade mountain at the centre of Taiwan. In this tropical island, I began to discover the meaning of life and enjoyed the beauty of nature through the abundant flora and fauna, as well as the different aboriginal and Asian cultures in this unique place. All of these wonders were embodied in the multitude of colours that lit up my childhood. In my teenage years, I lived in the belly of Paris, in the Les Halles district where my father had his stores. Fascinated by street art, I remember spending most of my time looking for new treasures among the graffiti and murals. Jean-Michel Basquiat was one of my heroes. During that time I would also take advantage of free Sunday admission to stroll around the Paris museums. Picasso, Monet, and Da Vinci became my Masters. I would fall asleep gazing at their paintings, as the museums became a refuge after a busy week. Life kept me moving. As a teenager, I traveled to the Americas and around Europe rather than Asia. Each trip was a new, starry-eyed, encounter-filled page of my life. As I entered adulthood, my heart naturally turned to more distant lands and unfamiliar civilizations, whether African, Kazakh or Siberian. I photographed those precious, magical moments for years, looking for the perfect image, going as far as to wait for a Siberian tiger for over 6 hours at minus 35° C in the snow. I’ve lived in many cities around the world and traveled in every continent for more than 40 years. I’ve always felt at home any-where. I want to share this feeling with everyone through my works. My passion for Arabian horses allowed me to live among them and observe them very closely for years. I spent considerable time trying to capture their soul. These great and rare moments are for me ‘PRECIOUS MOMENTS’. Each of these moments has its own story to tell. My encounter with many horse lovers and breeders enabled me to get my-self utterly devoted to equestrian photography for more than 10 years. I am so thankful for a lot of international horse Magazines, especially to “Tutto Arabi Magazine” for publishing my works during all these years. Meeting my wife Emilie was a turning point in my life. She enabled me to put everything on hold and change direction. Painting for me had been another world, out of reach and far from my academic and professional skills. Painting horses was a new challenge, I did not just want to paint them like photography but desired to capture genuine emotions at just the right moment and let the public imagine their own story. One of my first horses painting “Heritage” was born in late 2018. It was a revelation, full of the life that has allowed me to paint more horses ever since. This painting was selected and won the 2019 GAMMA Best Young Artist of the year Award in Paris, France, and was exhibited for the first time in October 2019 at the National Chiang Kai-Shek Memorial Hall, in Taipei City.

His Features and Role in the Course of Generations for Straight Egyptian Breeding by Monika Savier z photos by Joanna Jonientz, Nicole Sachs, Monika Savier, Archive Tutto Arabi
Quite often, the breeding potential of good stallions will only be recognized after they got old or even passed away. Only when they have vanished from the social media stage, but their positive characteristics make themselves felt in their successful offspring even after generations have passed – only then will the Arabian horse scene realize the vital importance these stallions had for the coming generations. NK Hafid Jamil was a successful sire even while he was alive. He was a fascinating exotic among the Straight Egyptians. It is true he was much debated all through his life, but at the same time, he had many admirers who trusted in his qualities, using him frequently as a sire. NK Hafid Jamil has 185 registered foals all over the world, and across the generations, he is sure to have influenced several thousand pedigrees. Even in his old age he was still called upon as a sire, as the tangible successes that his offspring continue to reap are facts, not fake. This important role of NK Hafid Jamil as a sire is even more worthy of mention nowadays, as this stallion never attended a show, never was presented to a wide public via live streaming or advertising. So I asked his breeder: “why has this stallion never been
to a show? “, and Dr Nagel’s answer was: “Arabian horses in history were used for so many purposes; they grew up under desert conditions or even here in Europe, and a uniform standard of evaluation never existed. I think today we have one standard, called Show. And for many years now, many breeders have been selecting their Arabian horses for the show. But from the point of view of a breeder, show criteria can’t be the only criteria, and they are not my criteria. So I invite you to reflect on the standard you like and you are searching for. That means you must make your own choice and then breed very consistently to reach your personal goal.” It was not just shows that NK Hafid Jamil ignored. Until today, Dr Nagel neither has a stud website nor a media presence on Facebook or Instagram. His Katharinenhof stud is a romantic place for his horses as well as for admirers of rural breeding, a place where the stallions NK Hafid Jamil, NK Nadeer, NK Nabhan, and all the others will only ever do pasture breeding and where they live nose-to-nose in their stallion barn and on the green pastures around the farmyard. They do like to show off with some naturally masculine behavior, of course, being active sires and not above using an occasion when it presents

itself. However, what they don’t display is aggressive attacking behavior such as can be observed with many of today’s stallions whose only experiences are the breeding phantom and being stabled in isolation. The Katharinenhof stallions are used to having to court their mares, being nice and polite in order to be allowed to cover. Their charming and likeable character, which will also lead them to cooperate well with humans and attach to them, is epi-genetically consolidated, being a general characteristic of the Katharinenhof horses. This kind of social behavior is a desired and calculated as a breeding goal. In 1947, Federico Tesio wrote the following in his famous manual for horse breeding: „Stallions are the basic potential of any stud - if you fail to introduce good stallions again and again, the offspring will deteriorate into mediocrity“. This guiding principle is generally applied in horse breeding up to today, defining the importance as well as the difficulty of selecting highly qualified

stallions who will produce outstanding offspring – a requirement that is by no means accomplished every time. One reason for that may be today’s strong emphasis on the sire lines. Dr Nagel’s approach to breeding, with his search for a „secret formula“ that will rather adhere to up-todate science and genetics, is more comprehensively positioned than that: “Stallions are to improve the breed, but the mares need to provide a good quality basis for the stallion to stand a chance to transmit his big points. Successful breeding works only if you have two good parents who are mutually compensative” (Hans Nagel, 2005). Along these lines, the success of NK Hafid Jamil is, among others, to be credited to the quality of his sireand dam line. Of course, his daughters owe a lot to their “front man”, but actually, what makes history is the whole of the gene pool. Katharinenhof stud with its successful breeding concept of more than 50 years is living proof of that.

NK Hafid Jamil - A member of El Zahraa’s Nazeer sire line and his Influence on Katharinenhof Egyptian Breeding Dr. Nagel talks to Monika Savier in an interview about his late stallion NK Hafid Jamil
Dr. Nagel, it is time to talk about the role of your worldfamous stallion. Let us start with his origin. Usually, people put lots of emphasis on the dam line, which in the case of NK Hafid Jamil is the famous Dahman Shawan line tailing to Bint Bukra. Why is his sire line, for you, so important as key to the success? In horse breeding, behind the word “sire line” is hidden a great richness of features and characteristics and at the same time it expresses “power” in breeding. In the course of time in all major horse breeds such
sire lines were well established and they became very influential on the whole breed. Some people, however, are claiming this influence of a sire line will not last very long and that after three or four generations, not much is left from the advantage a certain member of a sire line could bring. Other young sires normally come up quickly; they are more efficient and replace the previous ones. But sometimes history tells a different story. In Arabian horse breeding one comes across such

sire lines as well, in particular by analysing and evaluating the Egyptian Arabian horse population. This population has its beginning around 1920 and started with a relatively small number of about one dozen root mares and several breeding stallions. Until today, about 14 - 16 generations within 100 years have passed, and during this time several stallions showed up as the preferred ones and which were complying with El Zahraa’s breeding goal.
desert population were collected before by the Pashas of Egypt who decided to keep and breed them as a heritage. Therefore, “heritage breeding” could be the headline of the breeding policy followed by the El Zahraa Arabian Horse Stud in Egypt, a branch of the Egyptian Agricultural Organisation (EAO). In this stud all breeding stock are collected, kept until then by the former Royal Agricultural Organisation (RAS) and by King Farouk’s Inshass Stud.
What was the breeding goal in El Zahraa at that time, and who was behind it and had set up the definitions? This aim of breeding was guided by the idea to maintain an original type of Arabian as it had developed during thousands of years in Arabia, and to preserve it. Regrettably, this kind of Bedouin horse breeding came to an end as a consequence of the great political and cultural turmoil in the beginning of the 20th century. But some valuable horses out of this
At that time, who were the “stars of breeding” in Cairo? It took some time, but after several generations of breeding in these studs in Egypt certain stallions emerged who proved to be valuable sires: an older group, such as Mansour, Shahloul, Sheikh El Arab, El Sareei, Nazeer, and a later younger group, such as Anter, Ghassir, Touhotmos, Sid Abouhom, Alaa el Din, Morafic, Sameh, Ibn Hafifa, Amrullah, and Nasrallah. In addition, according to the El Zahraa

Nazeer (Mansour x Bint Samiha), leading sire at El Zahraa in Cairo
Stud Book No. II, about 40 - 60 broodmares were available for these stallions for further breeding. Why did Nazeer figure so prominently in breeding at that time? Did his offspring have such overwhelmingly convincing quality? It is surprising to find out that among all these horses with famous names, only one group emerged which was on its way to form a very outstanding sire line. All other groups remained clearly in the shadow of this only one. These observations centred around the stallion “Nazeer” who was used for breeding since about 1950. People named this stallion later on even “Stallion of the Century”. All the other stallions and their offspring had a relatively short career and it seems to be correct what was mentioned before: that after three or four generations, the influence of a certain sire is not noticed any more or becomes very weak. The contrary became true in the case of Nazeer. During his 15 years an active sire in El Zahraa, Nazeer
produced a very typical group of beautiful daughters out of broodmares of different mare families, and in addition, a few outstanding sons were born who became very influential in Egypt and as well abroad. In El Zahraa it was his son Alaa el Din out of the mare Kateefa, further Morafic out of Mabrouka, then Galal out of the black Mohga, all these three were intensively used in the Stud. As a result, the type of El Zahraa’s Arabians at that time was clearly stamped by these horses. Abroad, in the US, the stallions Morafic and Ibn Halima, in Germany Ghazal, Hadban Enzahi and Kaisoon, and Aswan in Russia were the ones, who established the great reputation for the Egyptian horses abroad in worldwide Arabian breeding. And it was accepted without trouble, this dominant role that Nazeer took up in El Zahraa? At a certain time, mainly around 1970, the rumour of too much in-breeding in the El Zahraa Stud made its round and people pointed at Nazeer and his extremely www.tuttoarabi.com - TUTTO ARABI | 231

Regrettably, many private farms will not last for a long time. It is difficult for their owners to find a heir who is willing and interested to continue the work of his parent. Or for an older breeder who started late, there remained not enough time to establish and to concentrate his work on a certain sire line. Most of these breeders disappeared again after no more than one or two generations had elapsed. It is basically the El Zahraa Stud as the original source of all Egyptian Arabians which has to guarantee and to fulfil long term obligations in breeding, as for example to take care of one or several valuable sire lines and to stay a rich and continuous source for Egyptian Arabians. ona (1956, Badr x Mahdia) growing influence. It became fashionable to look for Nazeer-free horses. Other stallions in El Zahraa and their offspring with a different genetic background came into the picture, and horses such as Anter, Sameh, Gassir, Tuhotmos and Achtal were now the preferred ones for breeding. It was mainly breeders in the US who looked for horses of such origin. But as is known now, none of these horses could form in El Zahraa or abroad a sire line as important and comparable to the one of Nazeer. 232 | TUTTO ARABI - www.tuttoarabi.com
Katharinenhof, too, has a close-cut breeding concept that bases its strategies on a foundation formed by just four mares. How much of “El Zahraa ideas” is behind that? Katharinenhof in Germany was probably the only stud outside of Egypt, which followed the original policy of El Zahraa and took, in this context, special care of the continuation of the Nazeer-sire line. Here is where the name “NK Hafid Jamil” comes Salaa El Dine (Ansata H into the picture. importance on the future of El Zahraa’s breeding in early times, he should be mentioned in the beginning as the first one. Then with his son Nazeer, the famous one in Egypt and abroad beyond Egyptian borders, this particular sire line will start, and then six stallions follow in line until the time when NK Hafid Jamil showed up. Mansour was one of the first major breeding stallions in Egypt. He was the sire of Nazeer and the sire of his half-brother Sheikh El Arab: two strong columns of early Egyptian breeding. Sheikh El Arab was, however, only a producer of females; Nazeer was the great all-round breeding magician of males and females. Let me make a systematic list of the facts that I was able to use for my breeding concept: Nazeer was, due to his dam Bint Samiha, a member of the Hadban family, one of the most influential groups in El Zahraa also thanks to Nazeer’s great contribution; El Zahraa works with five of such families. Nazeer became the sire of very prominent stallions: Alaa el Din, a chestnut stallion known for his beautiful daughters. Regrettably, he left no son of equal quality, his sons Galal and Morafic, however, took over this part. His other great sons were sooner

or later exported, Ibn Halima and Morafic to the US where they had for years the greatest influence in Egyptian breeding. Ibn Halima was without doubt Nazeer’s best son. He was sold as a youngster to the Ansata Stud in the US and was named there “Ansata Ibn Halima”. Ansata Stud was built on this stallion and he was responsible for its excellent reputation. As a consequence of such a great success, Arabian breeders and the public created the expression “Ibn Halima Look” due to the www.tuttoarabi.com - TUTTO ARABI | 233

In checking his pedigree, he goes back to Bukra, one of the broodmares of the prominent Dahman Shahwan family. In two breeding seasons in1984/85, he left in Germany

30 foals, 19 excellent daughters and 11 sons. All of them were of brilliant quality and had no doubt a great influence on all Egyptian breeding in Germany. As a sensation, which happened never before or after, German officials licensed all 11 stallions for use in breeding, a condition and requirement. One of his sons was Salaa el Dine out of the Alaa el Din
BLOODLINE daughter Hanan. He was the choice of Katharinenhof to continue the Nazeer sire line in this stud. Salaa el Dine fitted perfectly in Katharinenhof ’s breeding plans. A better shoulder position and a stronger hindquarter was needed. Ansata Halim Shah had them and Salaa el Dine inherited these features in perfection; they formed an ideal combination with Katharinenhof ’s fine and elegant mares. Just like his father, Salaa el Dine could produce in Katharinenhof as his offspring several wonderful daughters and five important sons: Adnan, Nahaman, Shahin, Safir and Nejdy. Katharinenhof decided to keep Nejdy as a further representative of this sire line; his dam was Lotfeia, a granddaughter of Nazeer’s mother Bint Samiha. Behind this decision stands the idea to return to the Hadban family at a certain point. All other Salaa el Dine sons left the stud after they had produced at home some valuable daughters. Adnan and Shahin became noticeable sires in Kuwait, and Safir was for years the chief stallion in the Al Rayyan
Ghazala (Ghazal x Hanan)
Stud in Qatar. Nejdy regrettably died at an age of three years and left only two offspring, a filly and a colt. This elegant stallion had only little chance to prove himself, but it was great luck that his only colt developed to be an interesting stallion. He was named Ibn Nejdy. Ibn Nejdy could be described as a typical member of the Hadban family, though he was, due to his dam Ghazalla, an Obayan. Members of this family would normally look as follows: rectangular horses with a high-set neck, a perfect tail carriage and a small head. This was also the look of Ibn Nejdy, totally dominated by his sire Nejdy. However, Ibn Nejdy excels with two more very important features: his big round eyes and very interesting small ears, a typical feature of Katharinenhof ’s Arabians. Ibn Nejdy was a sire of several sons and daughters, but one of them was a surprise for everyone who has seen him. It was NK Hafid Jamil. From his first days on as a

foal and from then on for his whole life, he was as it is quite normal - if something fell out of the known framework, for some still a most welcomed exciting new horse. Some others looked at him with criticism and irritation only. NK Hafid Jamil was an exotic, and you said this about him once: “Hafid Jamil, where did he come from? He 236 | TUTTO ARABI - www.tuttoarabi.com
tails back along a long line of stallions including Salaa El Dine, Nejdy, Ibn Nejdy… and I can say that I have rarely seen a horse, in Egypt or anywhere else, who gets anywhere near him in exotic looks. He is hard to categorize.” NK Hafid Jamil was a different horse compared to all the other previous stallions of this Nazeer sire line. He was born as a weak horse, extremely fine and

delicate, a little foal as if made out of porcelain. It took a lot of effort to make him grow up to become a healthy horse. When one examined him for a correct body conformation, it could not be overlooked that it was his hindquarters which worried. This somewhat unfortunate structure was not a complete surprise, it is known. It appeared before in other stallions of El Zahraa, even in members of the Hadban family.
Now this weakness showed up in this horse again. However, his front, his head, his neck, his withers, his chest, were perfect and made up for his deficiencies in the hindquarters. Particularly when looking at his head and neck one was impressed by this unique appearance: the shortest and broadest head, never seen before in all previous generations, and very small ears in addition; short head and short ears – this fits

together. His best points: excellent eye sockets with dark round well-sized eyes, the front of his head designed in a light elegant concave swing, which ended in a fine mouth and his extremely big nostrils. These nostrils widened enormously in breathing out and gave his head an extra concave element. This nice head was perfectly attached to the neck, a very clean “mitbah” (throat). The neck was of good length, highly set on the chest and perfectly arched which gave him the look of a real powerful stallion; he showed this amazing shape of neck in perfection when something excited him in his surroundings. NK Hafid Jamil’s tail carriage was absolutely striking, a heritage of the Hadban family in Egypt, which is famous in this respect. Even when his hind part was not the best, NK Hafid Jamil was a powerfully moving horse with a light knee-action in front.
He also had a wonderful character, not aggressive at all; rather kind and he liked to be patted. He was easy to handle in every situation, a brave horse and not frightened at all. This last feature was a very important point since he was travelling a lot. Several times to England, to Saudi Arabia for one year and to Kuwait as well. In all these trips never any problem occurred - without doubt, due to his nature that he had trust in people.

Would it have been possible to derive from his pedigree that a stallion of his quality would be born, or was that a piece of genetic luck? In studying his pedigree, it becomes evident that all his parents were of first-class Arabian type. When the formula propagated by experienced breeders “to breed equal to equal” is correct, then this condition

is perfectly fulfilled in the case of this horse. The choice of his parentage could not be better; all horses, male and female, appear as a very nice uniform group. This friendly horse took an important position in the Nazeer sire line. He is responsible for the situation that this line could continue to grow very successfully further into the future. Are there sons and daughters on your farm, who successfully perpetuate the heritage of NK Hafid Jamil? At Katharinenhof, he produced four sons: the full brothers NK Nadeer and NK Nizam and another full-brother pair, Jamal el Dine and NK Kamar el Dine. NK Nadeer is a grey and NK Nizam is a bay, both are out of the mare NK Nadirah, the most striking mare of good size in the stud in expression and movement, and a member of the Hadban family again. Only the word “elegance can describe this mare properly. She is an Adnan daughter and is for sure the best

representative of the Hadban family. NK Kamar el Dine, bay, and Jamal el Dine, grey, both are out of the mare Ansata Ken Ranya, a Salaa el Dine daughter who is a member of the Bukra line. She had a great resemblance to her famous ancestor in Egypt, Bukra herself. No NK Hafid Jamil daughters have been kept in the stud, even when some excellent fillies were born, as for example NK Nakeebya who is famous all over www.tuttoarabi.com - TUTTO ARABI | 239

Kuwait, or NK Jury and NK Neehelia, the last one a highly estimated broodmare in the Al Rayan Stud. NK Nakeebya gave birth in Kuwait to her beautiful daughter Nabaweyyah Ezzain. Today she reigns as the “queen of Al Rashediah Farm” in Bahrain. She is a breath taking bay mare, Gold Champion at the Bahrain Nationals, and dam of the Multi Champion Naseem Al Rashediah …yes, but NK Hafid Jamil daughters did not fit into the breeding concept of Katharinenhof, consisting of a closed population with a limited number of brood mares and one sire-line. Since NK Hafid Jamil had some very appreciated qualities which should be distributed over the whole herd, it is advisable to use consequently his sons for such a purpose. To keep his daughters as well would lead into the direction of too close breeding, such as brothers to sisters or halfbrothers to half-sisters. Therefore, it was decided to jump one generation on the female side and to breed
NK Jamal El Dine (NK Hafid Jamil x Ansata Ken Ranya)
on with the granddaughters of NK Hafid Jamil. So it happened that all four of these stallions have left some excellent daughters at Katharinenhof, which are on their way to form the new broodmare generation in the stud. The oldest ones are four NK Nadeer

daughters, followed by four Jamal el Dine daughters and further four NK Kamar el Dine daughters. NK Nizam is on his way to arrive possibly at a similar position as a sire of fine daughters who will be added later on into the breeding herd. At this time one could conclude that NK Nadeer will 242 | TUTTO ARABI - www.tuttoarabi.com
most probably be the one to continue the Nazeer sire line. Particularly when his son NK Nabhan was born, one could not think anything else as only a strong sire can produce such a fine horse; both father and son could be strong candidates for future members of this sire line.

NK Nadeer (NK Hafid Jamil x NK Nadirah)
NK Nabhan presented himself to be a potential sire even when he was a young stallion. He proved his quality already by an important number of offspring at Katharinenhof and as well at El Adiyat Stud in Kuwait. Some of these foals developed to be excellent Arabians. The oldest of them have matured into fine mares already, reaching the age of three years, and will be ready soon to form another new generation. Could it be said, then, that NK Hafid Jamil is the patriarch of the “special looks of the Nagel Arabians”? It is justified to claim that NK Hafid Jamil had the potential to create a certain type of Egyptian Arabians who did not exist before. In examining him, his sons, his daughters and his grandchildren, it becomes evident that all these horses have those smaller, broader and shorter heads; they have the finest muzzles and amazing nostrils. Their arched necks and a good high tail carriage are features which underline their elegance. NK Hafid Jamil’s weak hindquarter disappeared totally. It did not show up NK Nabhan (NK Nadeer x NK Nerham)

again. The hindquarters of his grandson NK Nabhan and his son NK Nizam, are of perfect shape and even their foals display a wonderful top line confirming that all these previous weaknesses have been eliminated. Like his parents, all this young generation excels in exciting movements, light and elegant, and at the same time powerful and energetic. To see and to observe an Arabian in motion brings out all his appreciated features, and an elegantly carried neck and head, combined with a high tail carriage, brings a horse into perfect balance. Nobody could predict that a tiny little colt would have such a great impact as a grown-up sire. Not only at Katharinenhof Stud, but 244 | TUTTO ARABI - www.tuttoarabi.com
also when one of his sons is used for breeding in other studs, they left traces of his most impressive features. Of course there are stallions in other studs who are members of the Nazeer-sire line and who occupy important positions. This applies certainly for some of the important studs in the Middle East, such as Rayyan Stud in Qatar or Ajmal Stud in Kuwait. In Rayyan Stud, the line starts with Safir, a Salaa el Dine son out of the Ansata Halim Shah daughter Aisha. Safir was later replaced by his son Ashhal Al Rayyan, who won great influence by several of his sons in other studs in Qatar and in Saudi Arabia. Also in Kuwait,
BLOODLINE
the Ajmal Arabian Stud has chosen an Ansata Halim Shah son, Ansata Hejazi, as their foundation sire. Not enough time has passed to recognise a proper line, but it can be already noticed that one of several existing Ansata Hejazi sons will follow his sire as a perfect replacement. Last not least, NK Qaswarah cannot be overlooked. This NK Hafid Jamil son was an eye catcher from birth on and left as a young colt for Ezzain Stud in Kuwait. All his life he was surrounded mostly by NK Hafid daughters who were, however, of different mare lines – a unique situation. NK Qaswarah created his own kingdom; nowhere can you see finer Arabians and prettier heads than in this stud. Only NK Qaswarah, his sons and grandsons are used as sires until now and it appears this project will continue the same way, a very special continuation of the Nazeer sire line as well. Therefore, it can be said it appears to be guaranteed that the sire line of Nazeer will continue successfully, even by several branches parallel to each other, and carry the heritage of this famous sire into the future. With NK Hafid Jamil some new refreshing elements have entered into the Nazeer line, mainly in two areas: in the field of type, and in movement. NK Hafid Jamil himself, his son NK Nadeer and his
grandson NK Nabhan as well as several young colts, are demonstrating that such changes have happened, they are consistent and indicate that a new direction in breeding has taken place. However, progress and improvements are required in all fields, in all disciplines and in nature: possibly, due to an adaptation to a changing environment, or necessary because of different preferences in economy or culture that form the environment for today’s horses. But when it comes to Arabians and to what they are kept for, such progress and improvements should happen within certain limits, not disturbing or altering the typical features and structure which give this horse its particular identity, and which attracted thousands of breeders and friends at all times to worship this horse. They have to comply with the desire of these people for beauty, to enjoy their Arabians as a companion, and to continue Arabian horses as the only breed which is famous all over the world for its elegance and aesthetic appearance. Regrettably, NK Hafid Jamil died in November 2019. He was 23 years old. He passed away resting in his always reserved stable box, which he seemed to recognise with pleasure each time when he returned home from one of his extensive visits in other studs abroad. q www.tuttoarabi.com - TUTTO ARABI | 245
