by Kamila Kozlowska z photos by Haras Cruzeiro archive
Since the 1980’s, the long tradition of Arabian horse breeding in Brazil has been proudly continued by such famous farms as Haras Capim Fino, Fazenda Fortaleza and Haras Meia Lua. In the past few years, the Brazilian horse industry has flourished and increased its influence on breeding programmes in the USA and other parts of the world. Exporting such high-quality Arabians as FT Shaella, Honey’s Delight RB, FT Havanna El Keav, RFI Unique, Flora LA, Dandara LA and El Jahez WH, just to name a few, shows how the world has turned its eyes to Brazil. The Brazilian Nationals have become the most celebrated Arabian horse show in South America and one of the most important events in the calendar of all Arabian horse aficionados. Located in the large inland state of Minas Gerais, the world-famous stud of Haras Cruzeiro adds greatly to the worldwide success of Brazilian breeding programme. Owned by an equine enthusiast Leandro de Aguiar and skilfully managed by his nephew Andre Cruz, with the invaluable support of Zico Guardia, the stud has earned its reputation as one of the most prominent breeders in South America as well as the home of some remarkable representatives of the Arabian breed. The impressive collection of broodmares has created an inimitable genetic pool, which is further enhanced by some carefully selected stallions.

Haras Cruzeiro is a big stud farm with a long tradition of breeding horses. Located in Araxá, in the State of Minas Gerais, Brazil, deep in the green of the tropical area, the farm has a huge extension and all the kind of horses. The typical bred Mangalarga is used to work at the activities which, at the farm, never stop, night and day. In this incredible location, Arabian horses are the kings, thanks to the vision of their owner, Mr. Leandro De Aguiar. There is probably nobody in our Arabian horses
community nowadays who hasn’t heard or known Haras Cruzeiro. At the beginning a solid base of broodmares by the good quality sires as Ali Jamaal, Lethif El Jamaal, El Nabila B, Shallenger, Marwan Al Shaqab, WH Justice, Legacy of Fame and others, started the collection of Haras Cruzeiro. Since 2010 the trips to Europe, America and Middle East has been showing to Leandro De Aguiar another type of breeding and the investments to increase the quality in Haras Cruzeiro have never stopped. Just to mentions a few, mares like Turchyia MPE

Andre, who bears the responsibility of managing this complex operation, agreed to share some of his secrets of the success of Haras Cruzeiro both in the breeding barn and in the show ring.
farm, where they look after the cattle. Their willingness to work is simply astounding! On top of that, they are such beautiful creatures. Believe me, I can spend my whole day just looking at them and admiring them.
Kamila: How has the story of Haras Cruzeiro begun? Andre: My esteemed uncle, Leandro de Aguiar, started breeding horses as early as in the 1980’s. Two special breeds became the part of Haras Cruzeiro breeding programme: the majestic Brazilian-bred Mangalarga horse and the exceptionally exotic Arabian horse. In the 1990’s, our focus shifted towards the Arabian horse breeding with another major turning point in 2010, when the international travels showed us what kind of changes we need to implement to achieve the highest breeding standards.
Kamila: I can definitely do the same! However, apart from being beautiful they also need to be horses. I am curious whether you, having bred Mangalarga horses for years, tend to introduce any elements of traditional Brazilian horse breeding into your Arabian breeding programme? Andre: It is extremely important for us that our horses, no matter how beautiful they might be, do not lose the qualities and abilities to work. In our opinion, horses are made to be ridden, so you can never lose this perspective in the breeding program, no matter what the market dictates, what kinds of new show ring trends emerge or which qualities the international judges are looking for. All these are just tendencies which, similarly to other fashion trends, come and go. I think that fashion should be the last thing that determines your breeding programme. We should not forget that, as breeders, we have a massive responsibility for the development of the breed and for what we deliver to future generations.
Kamila: Why did you decide to breed Arabians among other breeds? What is so special about them? Andre: Arabian horses are very special. They have such undeniable charisma and amazing attitude that no other breed I know has got. Also, they are impressively intelligent and have big hearts. Their physical strength and resistance make them perfect for all-day work in the

In my point of view, stewardship is a fundamental value when it comes to breeding. Delivering individuals of higher quality than the ones we started with for the next generation of breeders is fundamental for the development of the breed. Kamila: Thanks to your forward-thinking approach to breeding, Haras Cruzeiro is among the most significant Brazilian breeders nowadays. What is it like to have such an immense responsibility to manage the whole enterprise? In other words, what is the key to your success as a general manager of the stud? Andre: I believe that breeding Arabian horses is such a privilege that every day of my life I am grateful for being a part of this amazing adventure, which is only possible due to the fact that I was born in a family of great horsemen. The tradition of breeding horses was first introduced by my grandfather Ananias Ferreira de Aguiar and is now proudly continued by my uncle Leandro de Aguiar, the owner of Haras Cruzeiro and my personal mentor. It is really amazing how much I have learnt from him in the past few years. Leandro is also the brains behind Haras Cruzeiro’s vision and
breeding programme and by far the most passionate horseperson I have ever met. Kamila: Let us talk about your horses. How many of them call Haras Cruzeiro home at the moment? Andre: Considering all the breeds, I would say there are approximately 250 horses. Kamila: That is quite a lot! What about the foals? How many of them are born each year? Andre: I would say that we have approximately 40 new arrivals every year. Kamila: Your herd is a mixture of different bloodlines. Are there any particular bloodlines that you personally prefer? Andre: It is hard to point out one or two bloodlines that I could say are my preferred ones. I think that one of the most interesting things about breeding is when you mix some bloodlines that you would not normally mix and you manage to get extraordinary results. It is quite risky, usually does not work, but it is still worthy a try.

Kamila: Are there any horses that you consider a ‘must have’ in the pedigrees of Haras Cruzeiro Arabians? Andre: I cannot think of any particular representatives of the breed, but we are very fond of international pedigrees that have high genetic prepotency to enhance both type and conformation of our Arabians. Kamila: Is there any historical horse that you would love to introduce into your breeding programme, but it is no longer possible? Andre: Nowadays, almost everything seems possible, hence we are introducing Bey Shah and Padron into our breeding program. Thanks to our dear friends, David Boggs and Zico Guardia, we had a great opportunity to purchase frozen semen of these two outstanding stallions. I believe we can expect some 88 | TUTTO ARABI - www.tuttoarabi.com
significant improvement in such desirable qualities as structure, attitude and movement with the use of these two legendary representatives of the breed. Kamila: This is a very interesting addition to the genetic pool of your herd. Can you please share with us your breeding vision in a little more detail? Andre: From my point of view, the horses that we breed must be strong, resistant, fast and hard-working. They also need to be intelligent and have the ability to learn fast. All of these characteristics, combined with good-character and friendliness, make a horse that is very close to perfection. It is not easy to find all these qualities in every horse, but they are definitely much easier to find in an Arabian. However, this is still not enough. As Vinicius de Morais, a famous Brazilian
STUD
poet, bohemian and singer, one of the Bossa Nova creators, used to say “I would like to apologize to all the ugly ladies, but beauty is fundamental. Thus, beauty is a vital quality, but only when it is combined with all the characteristics mentioned above. If I were to summarize Haras Cruzeiro breeding vision in one sentence only, I would say that we enhance the quality of our horses in the way that they become more skilled for those who need a soldier to win a war and more beautiful for those who want someone to be in love with. Kamila: Beautiful statement! I wonder how HDB Sihr Ibn Massai, who is your main stud at the moment, fits into this vision. Twice Brazilian National Champion Stallion and a mixture of Russian, Egyptian and Spanish bloodlines, he seems to be an exciting breeding prospect. What made you choose him for your breeding programme? Andre: Massai is an extraordinary horse, not only as an individual, but also as a breeding stallion. His pedigree, as you have mentioned, is a very interesting FLORA LA (HDB SIHR IBN MASSAI X FT HAVANNA EL KEAV)

mix. Genetically, he is very different to the majority of bloodlines we have here, which means that there are plenty of opportunities for him to be crossed with a lot of our mares. He has already contributed greatly to our breeding program. Kamila: Do you remember when you first saw HDB Sihr Ibn Massai and what was your first impression of him? Andre: Of course! It was in one of the paddocks in Aachen. He was just about to enter the show ring with Paolo Cappeti. In that moment, Massai really impressed Leandro and myself. Unfortunately, as soon as he entered the show ring, he slipped and fell down to the ground. After that unlucky incident, his performance in the show ring was really poor. I remember that it was a difficult day for Paolo too. However, his poor performance in the arena did not really matter to us, as we were already under his spell. His failure to win on that day turned out to be beneficial to us in the long term. If he scored better in the All Nations Cup, it would be much more difficult to bring him to Brazil... 90 | TUTTO ARABI - www.tuttoarabi.com
Kamila: As the old saying goes: one man’s loss is another man’s gain! Which horse do you personally consider the best offspring of HDB Sihr Ibn Massai so far? Andre: Massai has already proven himself as a sire by producing a few Brazilian National Champions such as Carissima LA and Dandara LA. The latter one is currently in the US, where she won first place in her category in Scottsdale 2020 with David Boggs. However, in my opinion, Flora LA is the best foal that he has produced so far as well as my personal favourite. Kamila: Flora LA, Unanimous Gold Champion Young Filly in the 2018 Brazilian Nationals, is undoubtedly one of Massai’s best offspring. She now belongs to Almazrouei Stud in UAE. Why did you decide to part with this beautiful filly, who is an amazing show prospect as well as a promising future broodmare? Andre: It was a really difficult decision to let her go. It is extremely hard to produce a horse like that. For some, it is a lifetime endeavour to reach such high quality. When

you finally manage to breed such an incredible animal as Flora, you wish to keep her forever in the barn next to your office and you wish to use her in your breeding programme. However, as I have already mentioned, all breeders have an enormous responsibility for the future of the breed. At that point in time, letting her go was the right thing to do, considering all the new possibilities for her with the new owners. Kamila: Do you remember the day that she was born? Was it obvious from the very beginning that she is a special filly? Andre: Yes, I remember that day quite well, and no, it was not so obvious from the beginning that she would be so special. I think we started noticing it when she was about 4 months old. Kamila: Out of all the precious mares that belong to your herd, which ones have proven to be the most valuable broodmares? Andre: We have many special mares with precious pedigrees, so it is very difficult to point out one or two.
However, FT Havanna El Keav and some exceptional Marwan Al Shaqab daughters have proven to be outstanding producers for Haras Cruzeiro. Kamila: Which broodmare is your personal favourite and why? Andre: Impossible to choose just one, so I have prepared a short list: FT Havanna El Keav, Turchiya MPE, MS Magnolia and Dandara LA. Havanna is the most winning horse in the history of Brazilian Nationals. Not only did she become 5 times Brazilian National Champion, but she has also proven to be an incomparable producer. It is enough to mention that she is the dam of one and only Flora LA. Turchiya MPE, a refined snow-white daughter of WH Justice, was Italian National Champion as well as Best Head Trophy winner at the World Championships in Paris. A beautiful bey Marwan Al Shaqab daughter MS Magnolia is a trotting machine and another remarkable producer. Among many outstanding offspring, she is the mother of Carissima LA, the 2014 Brazilian National Gold Champion Filly. Last but not least, Dandara LA www.tuttoarabi.com - TUTTO ARABI | 91

Andre: To me, the best one is Iara LA by Vitorio TO and out of Turchiya MPE by WH Justice. She is already very refined and feminine and she moves like she was flying. Kamila: Of all the Arabian horses that you have met in your life, if you were to choose one that you love the most, which one would that be and why? Andre: It is impossible for me to select just one, as there are at least two horses that have been especially close to my heart. When I was younger, I used to own a half-Arabian sport horse gelding called Dargon. He was an extremely brave and intelligent horse and my greatest companion. At the moment, it is FT Havanna El Keavan, an incredible mare with a big heart and an amazing soul, who holds a special place in my heart. 92 | TUTTO ARABI - www.tuttoarabi.com
Kamila: Your collection of broodmares is really impressive, but you have recently purchased a young stallion EKS Farouk from Elkasun Arabians in RSA. What are your plans with regard to this promising future stud? Andre: We have great expectations towards EKS Farouk. I believe he can be a perfect match for our Massai daughters and hopefully he can perform well in the show ring too. Kamila: Let us talk about shows. Have you ever counted how many championships you have won so far? Andre: In the last 10 years, our horses won 20 Brazilian National Championships, including 12 Gold, 6 Silver and 2 Bronze titles. Andre: Being recognized as one of the most important breeders in the world, so that the Haras Cruzeiro-bred horses can compete and win at the shows in the USA, Europe and the Middle East. After my conversation with Andre, I have no doubts that his admiration and passion for Arabian horses inevitably lead Haras Cruzeiro to becoming the stud of his dreams. The breeding programme is an extraordinary combination of traditional approach, where beauty and performance are equally significant, with innovative breeding methods and continuous investment in enhancing the quality and genetic variability of the breeding stock. Rather than being driven by current fashion trends, the Haras Cruzeiro breeding vision is based on a strong belief that all breeders have a tremendous responsibility for continuous development of the breed. The responsibility that only great horsemen, to whom breeding Arabian horses is a great honour and privilege, fully understand. q

In a time where thanks to the world wide web the world itself is a relatively smaller place, especially our Arabian bubble, finding that ‘stand-out’ horse has actually become harder and harder. Apart from amongst Egyptian breeders, there are few ‘straights’ anymore -such as Polish, Russian, Spanish- bloodlines have been crossed and crossed and crossed back again and gradually all the Arabians in the world are morphing into each other, and accordingly that stand-out horse has become ever more elusive. Danubius Arabians, having already quietly accumulated an exotic and very special band of broodmares; having already bought Monther Al Nasser and leased Dominic M; have now raised their own very high bar yet again. Yes, Danubius Arabians have found the stand-out and they’ve flown him all the way from Brazil to their farm in Romania. El Jahez WH. www.tuttoarabi.com - TUTTO ARABI | 119

built around competition horses, but I liked horses and wanted to channel that interest into something I could achieve with them, but I wanted a quality project. During this time, I read a lot about the history of the Arabian horse. I wanted to buy a horse for my soul — and Arabian horses resonated with me’. In 2001 Sorin heard about some Arabians for sale in Mangalia, a town on the coast of the Black Sea. By the time he reached the farm there were only two left ‘a tall one and a small one’. Something connected with Sorin and ‘the small one’ and he bought the little Arab mare. Her name was Dunarea, and Dunarea is the Romanian name for the River Danube.
Danubius Arabians As a child Sorin Stanescu used to play with the horses at his grandfather’s, spending much time with them in the stables and it was here his love for horses started. Years later Sorin left university as Dr Sorin Stanescu, having qualified as a dentist, which he worked as for 14 years. When communism ended Sorin recognized he was to take action if he wanted to better himself and in 1996 he quit dentistry. And then where better to go to gain business insight, tools and techniques than America, the land of opportunity. ‘I came home with information burning through me, but it still took me another six months of thinking — and smoking!— before I came up with my business plan. After that I was constantly learning, copying and adapting business strategies and practices from other successful countries in a country where there was nothing — and I set out to improve the recipe’. So much so that when he retired last year Sorin was providing over 90% of Romania’s pet and livestock supplies. During this busy time however, Sorin’s interest in horses had not diminished and he wanted to channel it into owning and competing with them. ‘There was no culture

Little Dunarea may not have had long legs, but she had a big heart and became a very successful racehorse in Sorin’s ownership. After retiring from racing Sorin bred from her, but sadly she died a few years later foaling, causing Sorin to leave horses for a few years to concentrate on his business, but he still dreamt of having his own Arabians and a farm for them. Finally in 2012 Sorin was able to purchase a 2,500 acre forest near Singureni, around 25 miles South-West of Bucharest. Again he had given himself a huge project. But Sorin thrives on huge projects. To start with he had to source electricity from 5km away and there was no water. He had the whole area fenced, thinned out the forest, built a home, created paddocks for grazing and roadways to them and at last in 2016 the stables were ready. Sorin’s dream of owning a farm for Arabian horses had come to fruition and fittingly he called his farm Danubius Arabians in honour of little Dunarea. During all this time Sorin had continued with his extensive research into the Arabian horse; its history, pedigrees, farms, breeders and competitions. So, in 2016, having seen the catalogue and videos of the horses in the Pride of Poland Sale he sent a friend and a nonhorsey employee from one of his companies to the auction with the intention of buying one mare, Formia (Gazal Al Shaqab x Fortuna by Monogramm) in which he was successful, for 120,000 euros. But Formia wasn’t his only purchase after all and Sorin ended up buying

eight mares, some in foal. He had nothing ready for when they came home and had to turf the work horses out of their stables (they had to use horses to work on the farm as it was a hunting area and they were quiet, and in fact Lipizzaners were used to draw the hunting carriages) so Sorin set-to having the stable block built. At that time his intention was to have 20. There are now around 100! After the auction in 2016 Sorin met Mateusz Jaworski and since then they have worked together with Mateusz acting as his advisor, and although Mateusz only visits the farm monthly for a couple of days, Sorin says they speak almost daily about breedings and the management of the stud. Meanwhile, Sorin continued to visit farms in Europe gleaning as much knowledge as possible from owners and breeders and studying many websites, and as ever with horses, the more he learnt the more he realized how much more there was to learn. He also made other purchases in 2016, which included Wonder Girl (Etnodrons Psyche x Wolynianka by Wolyn) from a private Polish stud. In 2017 Wonder Girl foaled a superb dark bay filly by Emerald J. Now legend is that whenever Mateusz or someone came up with a good idea for the farm, Sorin’s reply was always ‘Why not?’ and this decided the name of the filly — Why Not DA. Why Not DA is a super pretty filly with tons of attitude and as such in 2018 was sent to the home of Emerald J, Jadem Arabians, for show production. She was Danubius Arabians first venture into the show scene, and that year, with their only show horse, at their very first show, Danubius Arabians Why Not DA won her class and become Gold Champion Filly in the All Nations Cup Futurity! Sorin told me that Why Not DA would always be retained at the farm as her dam passed away and he wants to keep her lines. In 2018 Rafael Leite became the farm’s reproduction vet, having worked in reproduction in Brazil for no less than Lenita Perroy and Murillo Kammer, followed by five years at El Farida in Egypt. The same year Sorin decided to acquire the famous stallion Monther Al Nasser (Ansata Hejazi x Ali Al Nasser by Imperial Mahzeer) as when he had researched the pedigrees of many successful show and breeding horses he noticed that straight Egyptian bloodlines would be in the background, and thought Monther would add the infusion they needed.
M has been used extensively this year at Danubius Arabians and they are expecting a good number of foals by him.
Also during his continuous extensive research Sorin decided he liked Versace and DA Valentino lines and wanted to bring them over to Europe to include them in his breeding programme, as an interesting outside genetic away from Marwan and the Russian strains and so as well as purchasing some broodmares he also leased the latest superstar-sire Dominic M (Da Vinci FM x Rosa La Valentina by DA Valentino) for 2019. the trees, making it less dark and more Disneyesque, and the deer can be seen grazing throughout. Sorin himself took me around the stables when I first arrived and proudly introduced me to each horse. He was obviously extremely fond of them and told me he spends much of his time in their stables, just being with them. Truly, it was nice to find a wealthy owner with numerous horses, who actually knew who they were and knew their names. It soon became obvious that once Sorin sets his sights on something, whether through research online or talking to other breeders, not much can prevent him from fulfilling his mission. ‘Once I like a horse and decide I want it I almost become obsessed about it. I have to have it. I watch its video every day online and I’m unsettled until the deal is done’. This is exemplified in his love of the Swana (Kubinec x the Spanish mare Belissa by Mel Nebli) lines.
Sorin’s first Swana purchase was the stunning Ariella OS, a 2009 Ajman Moniscione daughter. And what a mare! Snow white, with huge dark Moniscione eyes, in the arena the following day Ariella OS obviously enjoyed the attention and showed and showed, much to our delight. A massive mover with tons of snort and blow, it was easy to see why Sorin fell for her. So after acquiring Ariella OS Sorin then sourced and brought in three more Swana daughters from around the world, the four year olds Montana Sailaway (Al Ayal AA) and Odette SBA (Shanghai EA) from the US and finally three year old Shayhanna DM (Baha AA) from Saudi Arabia. The following morning I was treated to a presentation of some of Sorin’s favorite mares. Here at Danubius Arabians there are over fifty eye catching mares, most of them happily living out in the fields with ad-lib hay and field shelters. It’s a credit to the farm that some of the mares presented to me had only been brought in from the fields the previous day, yet all looked really well —

not just well-covered, but with super glossy coats too and all happily showed off to us, bright eyed and with tails aloft.
Sorin’s first purchase walked regally into the arena, the very dark bay Formia (Gazal Al Shaqab x Fortuna by Monogramm), now sixteen, bred by world famous Michalow Stud in Poland, she carries herself with tremendous grandeur and has that fantastic Polish majesty about her, barely bothering to break into her big trot — she knew she didn’t need to impress any further.
The beautiful bay Amerikhe (TF Psymreekhe x Jakartas Jewel by A-Jakarta) was a perfect example of this, living out until the day before, yet her shiny-conker coat almost as bright as her eyes as she hovered her way around the arena, and a very dramatic look she gives too, with great expression, dark mane and tail flying and head held high. Sorin chose Amerikhe when he visited David Boggs at Midwest. Interestingly, this mare is only just coming into her own, something I have noticed with imports from different continents or climates, some adapt almost immediately and some can take at least a year. Whatever, Amerikhe, a pretty mare with tremendous eye-banking, obviously now feels fully at home.

Sixteen year old Donna Diva (Laman HVP x Dhalila VCM by RSC Carhif ) had a lovely Excalibur EA colt at foot, but this didn’t stop her showing off for us in the school. However, most remarkable about this mare is that front on she has to be almost perfection. She has the biggest, deepest dark pools for eyes, perfectly placed on her flea-bitten face, giving her the softest, kindest expression ever. Every time I walked down the barn aisle I had to stop to get another look at her. Sorin had already told me that he finds the connection through the

eyes of horse and human most profound and you could lose yourself for an eternity in this mare’s eyes. On a trip around Italy visiting various farms, one of the stops was to Giacomo Capacci’s farm and here Sorin selected the eight year old Mystica Maghi (Marwan Al Shaqab x ZT Maghan by AB Magnum) and says he immediately had a feeling about her. Mystica Maghi was in foal to none other than FA El Rasheem and this year rewarded Sorin’s faith in her by producing a superb chestnut filly, Marama DA. Marama DA is such a cool baby with an extraordinary amount of bravado and look at me. Of course she strutted her stuff, but actually spent more time with head held high giving us an imperious stare and daring us not to be impressed with her. Another Danubius queen in the making. Another with a super FA El Rasheem filly at foot was the bay Savannah OS, a five year old RFI Farid daughter out of Aijana OS by Ajman Moniscione. Aijana OS was Gold Champion at Menton in 2016 and not only does Savannah ooze the quality and class of her illustrious parents, she obviously passes it on to her offspring, as this filly has a beautiful face, great eyes and plenty of movement and attitude. The dark grey three year old D Nawasy (FA El Rasheem x D Nawal by Royal Colours) snorted and blew her way around the arena. This filly has a crazy pretty face with the tiniest teacup muzzle, and attitude to match, so it was no wonder that she achieved over 92 points and was awarded second in a very strong class at the All Nations Cup last year, shown by Tony Bauwens from Elba Training Center. And next came my new favorite, the white-grey 14 year old Pentra (Poganin x Peczora by Emigrant) who has
already proved herself a great broodmare and dam of champions Poganinka (by El Omari) and Protekcja (by Ekstern). But for now I didn’t care about her progeny, I simply fell in love with this Polish gem. Pentra may not have an extreme modern head, but it’s short and typey, and anyway she arched her neck, lifted herself and powered around the area again and again, tail over back, snort mode on full, she gave me those same goosebumps that made me fall in love with Arabians in the very first place. And when she was brought back out to ply again later in the evening, she happily gave us the same display all over again. Needless to say, Pentra garnered three hearts against her name in my catalogue. There were many others of course, including the greys Justina (WH Justice x Virginia by Vympel) a stunning fourteen year old and seventeen year old Piekna Pani (Ekstern x Pasja by Wojslaw) are two other favorites of Sorin and one could see why, both beautiful mares, oozing quality and style.

In 1999 at the Pride of Poland Sale Lenita Perroy bought the grey stallion Debowiec (Monogramm x Debowka by Eternit) from Michalow Stud. Monogramm of course was becoming a phenomenon as a sire and his stock were winning titles throughout Europe. At only four years old, Debowiec had recently returned from lease in another country and so only had a few foals on the ground in Poland. Lenita bought him with the intention of incorporating longer necks into her Haras Meia Lua breeding programme and to combine his pedigree with her Ali Jamaal stock. Seven years later, in 2006, Debowiec was crowned Brazilian National Champion stallion. Also that year he was the sire of a very promising colt born at Haras Meia Lua. The dam of this colt was Jiullya El Jamaal, one of five full sisters that were the cross of Ali Jamaal and the beautiful Jullye El Ludjin (Ludjin El Jamaal) This special colt was named Jiuliusz De Wiec and was exported as a yearling to Pomeroy Arabians International (USA). Five years on, in 2011, Lenita, a frequent Scottsdale visitor, arrived a week earlier than usual for the show, to give her plenty of time to view horses, both for sale and competing. One of Lenita’s first visits was to the training center of Ricardo Rivero and Riyan Holte where she found a grey colt that stood out for its extremely long neck. Despite being only eight months old, Lenita felt he had the qualities that would fit into her breeding programme. The colt was bred by Fred and Mary Widman of Widman Hill Arabians and his name was El Jahez WH. And to Lenita’s surprise he was a son of her homebred Jiuliusz De Wiec and not only this, but his dam, Chili Pepper V, was sired by another stallion bred by her, Jullyen El Jamaal, an Ali Jamaal son out of Jullye El Ludjin. Lenita bought the colt. In 2012, having already left a great impression amongst the Brazilian breeders, El Jahez WH was crowned Brazilian National Junior Champion under Lenita’s
name. After Lenita’s passing he was acquired by a syndicate formed by Haras Panorama, Wolf, Haras FT and Serondella and gave a spectacular show at the Brazilian Nationals in 2019, where this time as a senior stallion, he was once again crowned Brazilian National Champion. Amongst the judges that year was Koenraad Detailleur, who spoke of his admiration for this horse: ‘Before the Brazilian Nationals I had only seen pictures of El Jahez WH, but in reality he overwhelmed me. Standing in front of me during the Championships he gave me goosebumps. A horse well in balance with an extremely well laid shoulder and amazing neck. I think we can use a stallion of this quality in Europe. I consider to use him on very typey mares to improve body, stretch and neck’. www.tuttoarabi.com - TUTTO ARABI | 133

Also to see him was professional handler Tom Oben, who said: ‘It’s not often you come across a horse that leaves you with that special feeling. Undoubtedly, El Jahez did when I saw him at the Brazilian nationals last
year. Beautiful and powerful! His look and expression captured me the moment they took him out of the stable. His style, elegance, stretch, athleticism and presence are hard to find nowadays. I truly believe that El Jahez WH

will be a game changer in the breeding industry and I am looking forward to his impact on the breed’. Meanwhile, Sorin had sent Mateusz to the Brazilian Nationals to look out for a colt or stallion. Sorin had decided he wanted a horse with different lines to those currently always used extensively in Europe. Plus there were specific qualities he wanted this colt or stallion to have such as attitude, good length of neck which was well set (which is where Sorin had noted the US were ahead of Europe) and good ears. The plan was just to view the horses that had made it to the championships. Says Sorin: ‘The horse needn’t have been crowned Champion, the horse itself was more important than the award, we wanted to look for what we liked and not what perhaps fashion or others had dictated’, but then in came the white wonder that was El Jahez WH and of course the search was over. El Jahez WH had every quality that Sorin had been seeking and more. His height for one —an impressive 1.62m— with long legs and a great body and movement. Added to these his incredible neck, typey ears and — importantly for Sorin— large black eyes. El Jahez WH had what Sorin wanted in abundance and the icing on the cake was his alluring star appeal. Now he ‘just’ had to buy the horse! Sorin soon heard that

a substantial offer had been made and rejected for this magnificent stallion, so he says he just waited quietly in the background to see what unfolded, although in the interim he bought a Jahez embryo (and made a substantial offer for Sophie El Maktub which was rejected!). In the meantime Sorin carried on with what he loves to do —research and learn— finding as many El Jahez WH offspring as possible and was pleased to note that he reproduced well, passing on that great neck and attitude, and importantly for the breeders, his semen was of very good quality. Six months later unfortunately there was no embryo, but Sorin managed to go one better than that, his perseverance and faith had paid off — he was able to buy El Jahez WH. Sorin says: ‘Not only did this stallion have to have the qualities I was searching for, he also had to have bloodlines that were not so available to European breeders, and importantly too his semen had to be of good quality for

I was fortunate enough to be able to invest in this horse and bring him to Europe and I wish to share that fortune and share the satisfaction and success that I get with other breeders, not for commercial reasons but for the soul. European breeders such as James Swaenepoel also have high hopes for him: ‘When we bought Psytadel from the US, we knew this was a horse who might improve the breed and take it to another level. If you flow with the current you feel all is right and you just float, but I think to be successful sometimes you need to go against the flow and try something else. I have a feeling that some of our mares will outcross very well with El Jahez’. SHOWS AND EVENTS
The Scottsdale Arabian Horse Show grows and changes faster than journalists can write about it. The innovations, improvements and great new ideas fall into place almost daily, and those changes seem to grow more dazzling every year. No wonder the Scottsdale show has become the largest equine event of its kind in the world, with more than 2,400 horses coming to town to compete for over $2.5 million in prize monies. And if that isn’t enough, some 300,000 people from 50 countries come to Arizona’s Valley of the Sun to participate, to spectate, buy and sell horses, make new friends and have even more fun than they ever imagined. Arabian horse enthusiasts everywhere plan far in advance for the annual pilgrimage. Many will make hotel or motel reservations for next year before they leave town this year. Arabian breeders, owners, trainers, exhibitors and enthusiasts from every imaginable global locale continue to send or bring their finest. Year after year, the numbers-all the numbers-steadily increase. In this uneasy era when most horse shows are cautiously picking their way across economic minefields, the Scottsdale Arabian Horse Show is prospering wondrously. Anyone who has witnessed the show’s exponential growth, even in the last ten years, can only marvel. Sure, Arizona is the perfect escape from the icy winter blahs, but people are making plans to be a part of something very special right here in Scottsdale the Mecca for the Arabian horse. 138 | TUTTO ARABI - www.tuttoarabi.com

In The Beginning
Somewhere in the inhospitable deserts of the Middle East, centuries ago, a breed of horse came into being that would influence the equine world beyond all imagination. In the sweet grass oasis along the Arabia peninsula, this hearty horse would be known as the Arabian horse. Historically the Arabian has maintained a reputation as the horse of beauty, intelligence, courage, endurance, and romance. Because he was bred and reared in close contact with man from the earliest records and developed an unequaled ability to bond with humans. As the oldest of all the light breeds and foundation stock of most other breeds the Arabian is unique. The Arabian breed is different in that it does not exist as a result of selective breeding, as are most modern light breeds. This breed has been recognized for thousands of years and records have been maintained and cherished over those years to document its purity. The high intelligence, trainability, gentle disposition and stamina of the Arabian enable it to excel at a wide variety of activities popular today many which are seen at the Scottsdale Arabian Horse Show each year. Competitions in English and western pleasure, cutting and reining, even jumping and dressage provide opportunities for fun and enjoyment. As an endurance horse, the Arabian has no equal. The top prizes at endurance events almost always go to riders of Arabians. In addition, the Arabians’ Bedouin heritage is evident in their unequaled ability to bond with humans, making them the perfect horse for family members of all ages.
The Guiding Light(s)
Arabian Horse Association of Arizona president Mary Lou offers some insight into the phenomenon. “I would have to attribute much of the show’s continuing success to our Board of Directors’ foresight and progressive, out-of-thebox thinking. Their eyes are on the future of the Arabian breed. We constantly tweak and improve what we offer; we want people to participate.” Participate, they do. Their motivations are as diverse as the manyfaceted show itself. Visitors to the show’s website will note that each day’s offerings include something for everyone. While it is debatable whether spectators or exhibitors, and which age groups within those respective constituencies, enjoy themselves more, the show schedule includes some-
thing fun unrelated to competition, every day. On the weekend you can watch for special free activities for the whole family, ice cream social, paint a pony, barn tours, seminars, pony rides, personal guided tours and much more! Children from five to 95 can have a great time with any or all of the foregoing activities. Watch for barn tours and educational seminars to be sprinkled throughout the week.
One Life To Live
Current Arabian Horse Association of Arizona director Sharon Chauncey-Siar has attended the show every one of its 64 years. Her father, the late Tom Chauncey, helped organize and stage the first show. It all started in 1953 when horse fancier Ed Tweed stopped by the stable of Pearl Grey Clyde, the first person to bring a purebred Arabian horse to the Valley of the Sun. At that meeting, Tweed proclaimed that he would bring together all Arabian horse owners in Arizona and start an Arabian Horse Association. Two years later, the inaugural Arabian Horse Show was held at the Arizona Biltmore Resort. The event was organized by an all-volunteer group and consisted of 50 horses and just over a dozen exhibitors, all from Arizona and neighboring states. Following the inaugural event, Arabian horse owner Ann McCormick bought 150 acres of land near Bell Road that became Paradise Park, the new site of the Arabian Horse Show. Due to the amazing success of the event, it outgrew Paradise Park in the mid-1980s and moved on to WestWorld of Scottsdale, a newly developed, much larger facility that proved to be the perfect locale for this incredibly popular show. That ambitious undertaking was almost entirely a volunteer effort. Volunteerism is still one of the show’s key elements.

“Everyone volunteers for the love of the horse,” explains Sharon. “We couldn’t do it without them. We have more than 400 volunteers altogether, staffing many of our services and activities. This allows us to reduce expenses in a number of areas. Most of our prices-entries, for instance-are the same as they were 20 years ago. We have absorbed many costs, including judges’ salaries and other expenses, but we haven’t passed those costs on to exhibitors. Instead, we’ve made cuts in other areas. The show’s yearly fundraising efforts have meant millions of dollars to local and national charities. This year’s charitable contributions again will be divided among Horses Help, March of Dimes, Scottsdale Community College Equine Sciences and Youth For Troops and many other smaller charities throughout the year. “Volunteers from each official charity also help out during the show,” adds Chauncey-Siar. Janet Cothern and Bob Leary are the volunteers who head the barn tours and educational offerings. “The seminars and demonstrations and ‘behind the scenes’ barn tours have been a tremendous success for more than a decade,” says Leary. Be sure to take part in a barn tour at the show this year, you will see what it takes to get the horses ready for competition and be able to meet some of the industry’s top competitors. “The last few years our barn tours have been very large: they usually start out at the beginning of the week with about 200 people. Well, word got around, the tours became a big hit, and we all worked together to really inform and entertain our audiences. We started small, but on last year’s final tour last year we had more than 450 people!”

Kahil Al Shaqab is the fourth son of Marwan used by Polish breeders (beside QR Marc, WH Kaneko MS and Abha Qatar). Kahil Al Shaqab is a distant relative of Bask, Eukaliptus and Naganka. Due to the repeated presence of Bask and Gwalior in the pedigree of his dam, OFW Mishaahl, half of his bloodline is Polish. . Pitawal descends from Janów’s most valuable dam line of Szamrajówka. His dam Pepita was sold in 2015 for the record price of 1.450 million euro. She left valuable produce at the stud, such as Patanga. here is no Arabian horse aficionado in the world that would not have heard of the famous Al Rashediah Stud. Located in the breath-taking Kingdom of Bahrain, this incredible collection of carefully selected Arabian treasures has created one of the most influential breeding programmes of our time. After the spectacular success of Naseem Al Rashediah at the 2020 Straight Egyptian World Championship in Milan, the Arabian horse society have again turned their eyes to Al Rashediah. Only four years after becoming Gold Champion Junior Colt at the same show, the gorgeous grey six-years-old Naseem has proven to be one of the most exciting stallions in both Straight Egyptian and non-Straight Egyptian breeding world. Not only did he win the title of Unanimous Gold Champion Stallion, but he also became Unanimous Best in Show Male and the highest scoring horse of the show. This amazing achievement would not be possible without the determination and engagement of Rashed Abdulrahman Al Jasmi, who is the proud breeder and owner of Naseem. In addition to carrying on the great legacy of his father by choosing the finest representatives of the Arabian breed for the Al Rashediah breeding programme, this young visionary decided to follow his own path by establishing a new enterprise called RJ Arabians. When I met Rashed earlier this year in Poland, I could not help but notice his great passion and admiration for the horses. His eyes lit up every time one of the Arabian beauties entered the show ring in Janow Podlaski. In between expressing his appreciation for the horses and analysing their pedigrees, Rashed found the time to answer my questions. Not only did he tell me about his everlasting love for the horses, but he also shared with me the story of RJ Arabians, where his passion and love for the Arabian horse conquered his fears of being excluded from the Straight Egyptian breeding society.

Kamila: How do you manage to run such a big enterprise as Al Rashediah Stud being such a young person? Rashed: As Earl Nightingale once said: “All you need is the plan, the road map, and the courage to press on to your destination”. I always work with pure passion which goes side by side with the depth of my love and compassion for the breed. My truest intent is to evolve the Straight Egyptian horse to the level unseen since back in the day when SE horses had high chances of winning in the shows against other purebred Arabians. In order to achieve my goal, I have been collecting these precious pearls with the most unique lineages into one breeding programme, creating the herd of the rarest foundation gems found in the world nowadays. Having all this in mind, I cannot forget that it was my father who played a vital role in pushing me towards my life purpose shortly after I turned fourteen. Thanks to his continuous support, I am now being led to a brighter and more fulfilling destination, where the best interest of the horses is my main focus. The trust and faith that my father unceasingly put in me, while raising me up, helped me to follow my instincts towards my own personal philosophy of breeding, which then saved me from making the false assumption that by mimicking another successful breeder, I can achieve the same results.
Kamila: How do you choose the people that work for you and what are the most important characteristics of your employees? Rashed: First of all, the people I work with need to share my love and passion for the breed and act in the best interest of the horses. It is crucial that my employees are loyal, hardworking and goaloriented team players who take pride in what they do. In my opinion, the horse industry is full of crazy horse lovers, whose passion depends on the discipline they desire to participate in, be it dressage, jumping or endurance. According to my personal observations, the Arabian horse show industry is limited to a handful of qualified and well-respected horsemen. Throughout the years, I myself had gone through working with many different handlers and employees, from horse grooms to management. These experiences have taught me that each mistake and each failure to overcome an obstacle can be a valuable lesson in life. However, the trick is not to let time slowly drift these lessons away to fade into the past. As the common saying goes: “fool me once, shame on you; fool me twice, shame on me; fool me three times, shame on both of us”. It is my guidance for how not to make the same mistakes while choosing my staff. Whether it is grooms, vets, managers or trainers, they all need to be honest, trustworthy and have respect for one another and for the horses. A good knowledge of the breed, experience in horsemanship, professional integrity and a common decency as human beings are also essential characteristics of the people I choose to work with. And they need to be realists, who are eager to accept a situation as it is and are prepared to deal with it accordingly. At the end of the day, I trust them to take care of what I cherish the most – my precious horses. Throughout the years, I have had my fair share of different employees that were interesting in their own way. Nevertheless, I have never regretted choosing them as it has given me the opportunity to learn from my mistakes and move on. No one is perfect, we all have flaws and we should learn to accept one another, but some people are just not suitable to work with horses. Let me put it this way: some people should have joined a circus rather than the horse industry.

However, I have met many great horsemen throughout my career. The story of my first manager, Mrs. Hilke De Bruycker, is quite interesting and unusual. I met her in 2011, when I was only thirteen years old and she was in between jobs, helping Philip Looyens to prepare his horses for the shows. I stumbled upon her while she was braiding my favourite horse’s hair. I introduced myself and, after a brief conversation, I wanted to learn more about this petite blonde lady who was taking care of one my most beloved horses, Farid Nile Dream. This was the beginning of a long-lasting friendship. Eventually, I helped her in achieving a completely different position in her professional career. From being the employee of the Schoukens Training Centre, she progressed to a managerial role with all the duties and responsibility that come with it. Over the years, we learnt so much from each other. I was happy to be the witness of her development into a confident manager with great leadership skills. As a result of her incredible progress, she was given a great opportunity to become senior manager of the stud in Qatar. With all her hard work and commitment, I believe that she contributed greatly to their success, which makes me very proud of her. Another great horseman and devoted employee, Mr. Franck Boetto, who is my current manager, is so grateful for his position that he would never take advantage of it. His dedication and commitment are unparalleled and he is willing to work very hard for the sake of the horses and the breed. I am really impressed with how much he has learnt about breeding Straight Egyptian horses. But most importantly, our horses are doing better than ever under his thoughtful care. Kamila: What is important to you while choosing the trainers? Rashed: Unity and horsemanship. It means that they need to share my compassion for horses. They would never neglect or harm a horse. Throughout history, we have seen all these violations when a horse has been through a traumatic experience because of being shanked or whipped. This is totally

unacceptable as it changes the characteristics of a horse. It is very important for me that all my horses are both happy and healthy. For a trainer, I will always choose a person who takes all the time needed to train the horse at its own pace without expecting it to perform well at all costs. A good trainer should always steer towards harmony while being careful not to demotivate the horse to compete in the show ring. While assessing Arabians, judges take into consideration not only conformation, Rashed with his father Mr.Abdulrahman Aljasmi but also type and charisma. The trainer needs to be confident enough to make good use of the magic fluid that flows through the veins of every know how the stable staff are recruited. After all, Arabian horse and is determined by the genetics the success and wellbeing of the horses depend on a of its ancestors. As it is charisma and amazing combined effort of the whole team. movement that make Arabian horses look like flying gazelles. A well-trained horse takes so much pride Kamila: Who is your greatest inspiration and from from its achievements and truly knows its own whom you have learnt the most about Arabians? beauty. It shows that the trainer has done his work Rashed: My father is my greatest inspiration; by complimenting the horse rather than pushing however, it was Mr. Alaa Al Roumi who taught it to its limits. Apart from teaching the horse how me most of what I know about Arabians. Firstly, to stand, the trainer should steadily encourage it he was the one that introduced me to all the original to show its unique natural traits like blowing or Arabian horse breeders who shared all their breeding snorting. Another thing I want from a trainer is to be gentle. The last thing I want to see is horses being shanked and trained with the use of wires, as it previously happened in the USA. Actually, one of our core stallions, ZT Faa’iq, had a pretty serious incident and he ended up being covered in blood because of the nails that were used on the halter behind the ears. The question that often arises in such situations is whom to blame: the breeder or the trainer. The truth is that the breeder puts great trust in the trainer, but in the end, it is usually the breeder that gets blamed for the bad behaviour of a horse. Also, when you trust the trainer, you need to trust the entire team because everyone is involved in handling the horse. You really need to know your trainers, recognize their love and Beside Mr. Al Jasmi is his loved filly Salma al Rashediah and standing on the passion for horses and commitment left is Ms. Eileen Verdieck and beside her Mr. Alaa Al Roumi, Al Rayah Stud, to their wellbeing. philosophies with me. They respected one another’s breeding vision, learning from and cheering for one another. Secondly, he was the first person who took me seriously at the age of thirteen and even bought some horses from me at that time. He highly appreciated my breeding programme and recommend my foal crops to many breeders with complete conviction. And he surely would never mislead them. He was the only one that used to have long serious in-depth conversations with me about the horses. It created a sense of acceptance and let me believe that I was not treated like yet another child in this world ruled by the grown-ups. I was given the benefit of the doubt while I shared my observations with him. What is more, he introduced me to some of the most renowned European breeders. Thanks to him, I met Dr Hans

Nagel from Germany, whose great knowledge and experience helped me to appreciate the importance of strains and dam lines. Another person that I think very highly of is Mrs. Judy Forbis who, among other things, taught me to stay focussed on my breeding program. She also emphasized the importance of using strong foundation mares as the key to becoming a successful breeder. When she started establishing her own breeding programme, she was lucky to have Ansata Bint Bukra, Ansata Bint Zaafarana and Ansata Bint Mabrouka as her foundation broodmares. I am truly honoured to know her in person. From all the people that have influenced me
in one way or another, Ms. Eileen Verdieck is surely one of my dearest friends. Not only did she share her knowledge about how to mix different bloodlines to achieve great results, but she also told me the amazing story of Imperial Arabians. It was really interesting to look at the history of the industry from her perspective, as she experienced various economic changes that heavily influenced the market when she worked for both Imperial Arabians and Al Shaqab Stud. But, above all, she is very dear to my heart and I have a lot of respect and admiration for her. My true love for her is unmeasurable and is well described by what we like to say to each other: “Love you to the hell and back”. Although she is a very busy person, she has always been there for me. We have been friends for the last ten years and we talk with each other almost every day. She has always believed in my breeding programme and now I am lucky to have her in my team. For over a year, she has been the director of our stud. Finally, someone I cannot forget to mention: Mrs. Christine Jamar, who has not only been my dear friend, but also took me under her wing and became like a mentor to me when I was only fourteen years old. At that time, I decided to head over to Belgium to take part in a very short and intense course about judging Arabians run by
her and Mrs. Toto Modderman. Even after the course came to an end, she kept sharing her wisdom with me. She showed me the ropes of the Arabian horse industry and introduced me to the variety of breeding programmes around the world. I was lucky to spend some time at her place, where we had many conversations about judging Arabians in an ethical manner. Unfortunately, there are judges that
exhibit unethical behaviour such as favouritism and bribery. At the other extreme, a biased judge may intentionally underestimate the true value of a horse, simply because they are not fond of the breeder or the owner. Such unprincipled judges bring shame upon their profession, which a woman of great integrity like her, clearly despises. She always reminded me to stay focused on the horse when judging and to ignore all the internal and external voices that may result in an unfair or biased score. Apart from her judging techniques, she also taught me the anatomy of an Arabian and how various flaws can be adjusted and fixed through a carefully designed breeding program. Kamila: Please share your breeding vision with our readers. Rashed: Personally, I have never met a breeder that would share their breeding philosophy without justifying it with certain aspects that you cannot avoid, especially in the world of Straight Egyptian horses: their pedigrees, families, dam lines and strains, to name just a few. Every breeder has their own dance routine that identifies where they have been, how they arrived at where they are now and in which direction they are going. Breeding SE horses is similar to a symphony, where every note played on each instrument must be perfect, otherwise, the entire orchestra falls into demise. It is very much a creative endeavour, full of harmony, where beauty is the main goal. I believe that a true breeder should criticize their own horses more than anyone else. Also, it is vital to know where your breeding program is heading towards and what steps you must take to not only arrive at your destination but also to know where to go from there. To me, breeding SE horses is about the journey and not about the final destination. As with any success in life, you cannot rest on your laurels, as soon you will be left behind. It happens to many SE breeders who follow the same path, using just a few selected bloodlines and focusing on particular traits rather than perceiving the horse as a whole. Kamila: In your opinion, what are the most important characteristics of a good broodmare? Rashed: I always look for an overall quality of the mare as it is extremely difficult to breed exceptional
offspring without it. Obviously, type is very important, but should never be a decisive factor, especially at the expense of the overall conformation. I believe that currently, many breeders take into consideration only the head and the charisma of a horse, which, in my opinion, is relatively easy to breed. It is much harder to improve the structure of a horse, its shoulders, legs, balance and pigment. All these qualities are hard to find and, at the same time, are essential to produce a horse that is not all about a pretty head or flashy movement but is complete and correct. I thoroughly evaluate every horse, looking at their strengths and weaknesses first. The next step is analysing their pedigrees to establish the origin of any desirable conformation traits as well as their

individual genetic prepotency. I always look for rare and unique pedigrees, ideally outcrosses, as they work well with the bloodlines that are currently available around the world. Additionally, these pedigrees need to match well with the bloodlines of the stallions that are available for me to use.
Kamila: Is there a ‘must have’ list of qualities that a breeding stallion needs to have? Rashed: In addition to the diversity in bloodlines, type and confirmation are always on the top of my list of most desirable qualities in any horse. I believe that, for a medium size broodmare band, at least three different stallions with different strengths are needed to continuously improve one’s breeding programme. Personally, I have always been a great believer in selecting the stallion specifically for the mare you want to breed. I strongly believe that breeding pieces of perfection should be based on what needs to be corrected or enhanced in both the mare and the stallion. To me, selecting the best or most popular stallion and breeding it to your best mare
Kamila: Do personality and disposition of a horse matter to you and are Arabian horses different from other breeds in this respect? Rashed: Obviously, there are differences between handling Arabians and other breeds. And of course, personality and disposition do matter to me, as I have been the witness to some dramatic incidents on a number of occasions. Some bloodlines, be it Straight Egyptian or other strains, are known for passing on bad disposition. It is definitely an attribute that a breeder should pay attention to. Unfortunately, it is commonly ignored. On the other hand, bad behaviour often results from the horse being repeatedly abused and illtreated. ZT Faa’iq, who was unfairly given the nickname “Monster”, may serve as a good example. Perceived as a maneater, he simply exhibited the fight-or-flight attitude, a natural behaviour of a mistreated and harmed animal. Luckily, today he is one of the sweetest horses on our farm, where he has never shown any signs of aggression or inclination to harm anyone. Kamila: Your breeding program is predominantly focused on Straight Egyptian bloodlines. What is your opinion on other types of purebred Arabians? Rashed: Personally, I am devoted to the Straight Egyptian horse. However, I must admit that I have also dived in the dark arts with a few nonSE Arabians, representing various bloodlines and lineages. Telling people to use my stallion on a non-
2009 World Championships in Paris, I met Ms. Kimberly Jarvis who, from then on, has become as close as family. Her daughter Brooke is like a sister to me. No wonder I have great trust in that she will always give me the best possible advice and support. In the end, she was the one who introduced me to a very interesting and impressive group of mares that later on became the foundation of what is now known as RJ Arabians, the enterprise that was once a heavily guarded secret.

SE mare would verge on hypocrisy, so I have acquired a few non-Egyptian broodmares that carry on the legacy of Ali Jamaal, El Shaklan, Bey Shah, Padron Psyche and Bask. I decided to take a risk of being shunned by the SE community because of my desire to mix both worlds. It was seen by some as me having betrayed the breed. The truth is that I simply could not resist trying after I saw an amazing chestnut colt of mixed origin at Frank Sponle’s training centre. Due to the conservatism of SE community that was against mixing SE horses with other bloodlines, I had to keep the non-SE breeding programme to myself. Besides, I did not want my love for the non-SE horses to become the cause of conflict between myself and those breeders who devoted their lives to enhancing the standard of Straight Egyptian Arabians. At the

Kamila: Does your presence in Janow Podlaski mean that you are also interested in some Polish bloodlines? What is so special about Polish horses then? Rashed: My first spark of passion towards the pure Polish Arabian horses began in the welcoming barns of Mrs. Christine Jamar. I could not help but notice her great passion and admiration for the Polish Arabians that go side by side with an incomparable

knowledge of the Polish bloodlines. She strongly believes that Polish horses have great potential to be the basis of any breeding program. And I trust her judgement. Kamila: Is this your first visit to Janow Podlaski? How do you like it here? Rashed: Yes, this is my first time and I really like it here. Even though some restrictions had to be imposed because of the pandemic, it was a very well organised show. I love the world-famous stables and Mirwanah Kalliste (Marwan Al Shaqab x Nakubaya Kossack)
there are three individuals that highly affected me as well as my breeding vision: Mirwanah Kalliste, Marwan Al Shaqab and Pianissima. Not only did they take my breath away, but they also made me shift towards learning more and more about nonSE Arabians. My admiration for these amazing horses awakened my curiosity. Kamila: Can you name a historical Arabian that you would like to use in your breeding programme if that was still possible? Rashed: Without a doubt, Ansata Sinan, Imperial Madheen and PVA Karim would be my top three.
Pollina (OM El Bellissimo x Pepina)
barns of Janow Podlaski and I had a remarkable time observing the Polish horses in their natural environment. I find it fascinating how the Polish bloodlines are perceived through the prism of various disciplines, be it showing or racing. It is almost as if some lines were genetically predisposed to do one or the other. Kamila: If you could name one horse that took your breath away when you saw it for the first time, which one would that be? Rashed: Throughout the years, various horses have done so, but
Kamila: In your opinion, how the Arabian horse industry will change due to Covid-19? Rashed: There has been a lot of uncertainty in the world, but one thing I know for sure: the Arabian horse breeders will never lose their love and passion for the breed. But obviously, it is shocking how things can change overnight and how planning for the future can become impossible. A global crisis like this will surely influence the whole industry. Therefore, I strongly believe that a comprehensive strategy for the future of the Arabian horse is now our highest priority. The principles that help to fight against the world-wide
pandemic should be an inspiration for our Arabian horse society to create a balanced future for the Arabian horse breeding and showing. Firstly, the best interest of the horse should be placed above all other considerations. Secondly, the principles of honesty and ethicality should become an integral part of breeding, advertising, judging and show organisation. But most of all, the whole industry should strengthen the cooperation and synergy among all countries by searching for the methods that could create an optimal and stable balance until the situation in the world comes back to some sort of normality.
Inspired by so many great horse people that he was lucky to meet throughout his life, Rashed has developed his own unique approach to breeding without the slightest intention to imitate anyone. Despite his young age, a clear breeding vision in his mind and the determination to make his own choices will undoubtedly lead to remarkable results in continuing the great heritage of Al Rashediah as well as developing the innovative breeding programme of RJ Arabians. Looking at his own mistakes as valuable lessons in life, Rashed has become a great judge of characters, carefully choosing the people who help him to take care of his most precious treasure – the exceptional noble creatures that are blessed to call Al Rashediah their home. Since Rashed was a 13-year-old boy, he has impressed and earned the respect of so many Arabian horse experts with his thorough knowledge of SE pedigrees and bloodlines. I managed to talk with some of them and ask about their personal experiences of working with Rashed. This is what they told me: Judith Forbis: “I will never forget the first time I met Rashed. He was a pre-teen rather chubby young boy and, He was visiting Al Rayyan Farm in Qatar with his father who was in the process of developing an Egyptian Arabian breeding program. Rashed was already an enthusiastic admirer of Arabian horses at this young age. When we began to talk, I could hardly believe my ears. This kid was reciting Egyptian Arabian horse pedigrees better than even I could remember them now. I laughed to myself remembering when I was studying Egyptian bloodlines I had recited the pedigrees of each horse to Dr. Marsafi - then director of El Zahraa Stud of the Egyptian Agricultural Organization - as we walked through the farm looking at horses. Marsafi gazed at me rather puzzled that I had memorized them so well! That was back in the early 1960’s just after we had purchased Ansata Ibn Halima, Ansata Bint
Mabrouka and Ansata Bint Zaafarana. So here I was - several decades later - confronted by a young pedigree genius. I couldn’t help thinking it will be interesting to see if his excitement carries forward when he grows up. Fast forward to some years later when I was attending a presentation of horses at the Al Jasmi’s now well-established Al Rashediah Stud farm in Bahrain. As usual, tea was served and introductions of the various guests took place. Imagine my surprise when a handsome tall and very slender young man, fashionably dressed, came up and introduced himself. Indeed it was Rashed - still as enthusiastic about Egyptian Arabian horses as ever. Of course I was very pleased to see a heavy influence of Ansata bloodlines in the Al Rashediah program and to know these Egyptian horses were being bred by a family who believes in the historical and genetic value of this “breed within the breed.” This is a picture of Rashed and me taken in Germany at an Egyptian Event Europe a few years ago. Time marches on and I always look forward to seeing him and following the progress of the farm’s thoughtfully planned breeding program.”
Dr Hans Nagel: “I am following with great interest the development and the prosperity of Al Rashediah Stud, and I am very happy to see their breeding success. Mr. Al Jasmi and his son Rashed are known to me as great admirers of the Arabian horse which I could experience when they came to my farm to choose some foals which they considered to be foundation for the future. Their choice has proved a good knowledge and fine taste for Arabian horses. I have seen the development of their impressive stud and its surroundings which are a perfect place for their beautiful horses. I have always felt that working with Arabian horses brings both of them, father and son, much pleasure and satisfaction.” Franck Boetto: “Rashed is one of the most intelligent people I have ever met in my life. He acts as if he had ten brains in his head, which sometimes makes it difficult for others to follow him. His knowledge of Arabian horses and their pedigrees is truly impressive. He has great passion for the horses and is always involved in all that is happening on the farm. Sometimes he makes me crazy, but he is the nicest and kindest person I have met in my life and I am very proud and happy to work with him.” Alaa Al Roumi: “I met Rashed through his father. However, my relationship with him is quite special due to sharing a similar hobby. I saw a spark in his eyes every single time we spoke about any subject matter related to horses. This started when he was about 9 years old, which to me was astonishing, for such a young boy to be devoted to attend horse shows and to know the names and breeds of horses by heart. For a boy at that age to have so
much knowledge about Arabian horses was incredible, we called him the Encyclopaedia of Arabian Horses. I saw Rashed growing throughout the years to develop his own thought and perception of horses, where his perspective became of such a great value. He incorporated this knowledge into the breeding program of Al Rashediah Stud, where he managed to breed some of the world’s greatest Arabian horses. His young age, experience and dedication is truly an inspiration.” Eileen Verdieck: “When I first met Rashed about 10 years, he was just 14 years old and I was so impressed that this young man knew so much about the pedigrees and how the horse industry worked. He was very passionate as well as creative in his thinking process. I think one of things I like the most about him, as well as his father, is that they are willing to look to the future rather than just the immediate result of breeding. I think it is so crucial right now in the SE bloodlines, as there is so much diversity in the pedigrees that to continue blossoming and moving things forward, you need to make sure there is some outcrossed blood introduced. Rashed and his father share this vision and have asked me to help them achieve it, so I am looking forward to the future with them as they are doing some remarkable things and they are a wonderful team.” Christine Jamar: “I first met Rashed when he was a 14-year-old boy. On his father’s request, he came to my place for a three-day course, where me and another judge, Toto Modderman from the Netherlands, taught him about the anatomy of the horse and other breeding related matters. With
two teachers and just one student, the course was very intense, but Rashed surprised us both with how fast he learnt, how intelligent his questions were and how well he did on the final exam. He is very clever but pleasant and kind at the same time. And we always laugh at how I kept feeding him with salmon and asparagus, as there was no halal food so widely available in Belgium at that time. I am impressed with how his breeding programme improved over the years and I wish him all the best for the future.” Kimberly Jarvis: “I had the pleasure of meeting Rashed as a young boy and I was enamoured with his knowledge and outlook of the Arabian breed. It has been my sincere honour to become close with Rashed and watch him grow and flourish into a man, breeder and Arabian horse ambassador. He knows his horses as well as how to precariously breed his herd in a way that Arabian type and beauty is preserved and prevails.” Mohsen El Gabry: “Rashed came to me as a young boy, passionate and excited about Straight Egyptians. In 2009, he saw Sherifa Elgabry and he fell in love with her. Sherifa was so precious to me that I would have kept her for myself to breed, but when I saw the love and appreciation in Rashed’s eyes, I made an exception for a young breeder who I knew will grow up to be one of the most important breeders in the world. When I decided to sell my wellknown stallion Jamil Al Rayyan, I wanted my boy to be at Al Rashediah. I knew that Rashed admired this important stallion and that he would use him carefully. When I visited the stud in Bahrain, I fell in love with the place and the people, who are now my dear friends. It has been a great pleasure to know them and I am so proud of what they have achieved in the world of Arabian horses.”.
Glenn Jacobs: “I have known Rashed for some years now. He is very passionate and knowledgeable about the Arabian horse. He is dedicated and has perfect understanding of what he wants. All this reflects in his world-class breeding programme at Al Rashediah Stud, which in turn enhances the future of the Arabian breed in general. I have bred my own mares to his stallions Naseem Al Rashediah and Jamil Al Rayyan with great result. I like to end with wishing Rashed and Al Rashediah lots of continued success and great foals in the years to come.” Hilke De Bruycker: “I met Rashed for the first time at the Egyptian Event Europe in 2011, when he was still a little boy. That weekend he helped me in the stables (feeding, brushing horses and even mucking out). He talked about his dreams and ambitions. He knew every pedigree of any Straight Egyptian horse generations back. It was really impressive for a 13-14-year-old boy. At that moment, I was in-between jobs and was going to start later that year at Athbah Stud in Saudi Arabia. We exchanged numbers and, from that day on, our friendship started. After Athbah Stud, I was given the opportunity to manage his young stud, housing some of the most influential lines of the modern Straight Egyptian programme. Our friendship grew only stronger and he became like a brother to me. The years I worked there were a learning experience for both of us and we grew and accomplished so much together. Since I met Rashed in 2011, he has always been the same passionate and eager boy, chasing his dreams and making them come true. Today, Al Rashediah Stud is an established name in the Straight Egyptian breeding programme. It is all because of this little boy with big dreams. May the odds be ever in your favour, Rashed!”

PRAGUE 2020
text by: Fabio Brianzoni photos by: Alessio Azzali, Renáta Kolářová, Fabio Brianzoni 2020 has been a difficult year for everyone. Many European countries have seen periods of lockdown and partial openings. At the end ofthe summer Belgium saw the closure of indoor events and so the problem arose of where to hold the European Championship 2020. A show that normally took place one year in Italy in Verona and one year in Belgium in Leer, as it should have been this year. In a climate of uncertainty and cancellations, yet unstoppable determination to remain positive and proactive, our ECAHO President Jaroslav Lacina challenged the situation, and in agreement with the Executive Committee of ECAHO and the Executive Committee of ACHPAK (Czech Association for Purebred Arabian Horses), moved the date of the now historic 'Czech &ational Championship' and 'Prague Intercup 2020' by a week later than planned. This was done in order for the European Championship 2020, which was to take place as said in Belgium in Leer at the end of October, to be moved to Prague by a month and a half earlier than initially planned, so that all the shows could be held outdoors. Thus, from September 17th to 20th, 3 shows were held: Czech &ational Championship, Prague Intercup and
European Championship. To arrange 3 shows in 4 days with so many changes in such a short amount oftime in 2020? A 'lucid madness', one might think. . . but fortunately genius and unruliness go hand in hand, proving that ACHPAK had a lot of courage, drive and flexibility, accompanying their amazing team. We at TuttoArabi have always been present, since the first edition of Prague Intercup international show. Even then, the hospitality and the organization were excellent, and it has remained so over the years. But what this four day event offered this year in the new location of "Prague - Velká Chuchle Arena" was nothing short of extraordinary and unforgettable for everyone. This facility is the historical racecourse ofPrague, built in 1860 by Archduke Karl Franz Josef, Governor Count Karl Coudenhove, and the Mayor of Prague, Dr. Karel Groš. Continuously modernized over the years, the structure is located ten minutes by car from the historical centre ofPrague and with the usual shuttle service provided by the sponsor "KOPECKŶ", a BMW and Peugeot dealership, the travel has been extremely easy. A jumping arena, with a restaurant structure made entirely of wood and tents, is located in the centre ofthe racecourse and right there were mounted the VIP tables and the ring with a www.tuttoarabi.com - TUTTO ARABI | 163

preparing ring. Two gala evenings were offered to all guests by the sponsors, whom we always thank with affection for the effort and commitment they put into supporting the world ofthe Arabian Horse.
The whole event setting was designed and consulted by Mr. Drazen Lazic, as every year with the Czech &ational Show and Prague Intercup. With speakers who took turns with the double language Mrs. Zuzana Slaviková (CZ), Mrs. Veronika Berková (CZ) and Mr. Eric Blaak (BE). Music and sound for all four days were entrusted to and flawlessly executed by Mr. Karel Zbiral.
In short, a unique event: four days, three shows, two gala evenings, high quality stabling for the approximately 170 horses present, VIP tables, catering, night and day show with archers and riders, the surprise presentation by Giacomo Capacci of the World Champion Kahil Al Shaqab, in the frame of one of the most beautiful and romantic cities in Europe. The weather throughout the event was the absolutely perfect and warm autumn sunny setting one could have only wished for.
The second day, started at 10 am and was entirely dedicated to Prague Intercup, which was masterfully judged by Mr. Gianmarco Aragno (IT), Mr. Jerzy Bialobok (PL) and Mrs. Bérengére Fayt (BE). For this show the disciplinary committee was consisting ofDr. &ils Ismer (DE), Mrs. Irena Cieslak (PL) and Mrs. Elisabeth Chat (AT).
The first day was all about the Czech &ational Show. The judges, for horses born and registered in the Czech Republic, consisted of Mrs. Anna Stojanowska (PL), Mrs. Helen Hennekens (BE) and Mrs. Elisabeth Chat (AT). With the start of the &ational Show, the marathon for the Disciplinary Committee started as well, which for this show was formed by Dr. &ils Ismer (DE), Dr. Iveta Dudova (CZ) and Mrs. Irena Cieslak (PL). Throughout all four days Mr. Gerard Oben (BE) was the Ringmaster.
The event took place in serene harmony, crowned by the high quality of the horses presented, coming from all over Europe, which brought together public, owners and breeders to this wonderful show. In the evening, the first gala dinner with a truly impeccable catering service and delightful entertainment was held. The outstanding fire show was performed by Pa-Li-Tchi, followed by the subsequent surprise presentation of the amazing Kahil Al Shaqab accompanied by Giacomo Capacci, which was the highlight

kindly arranged by HH Sheikh Hamad Bin Ali Al Thani and Al Shaqab Stud from Qatar. Due to the lockdown period and all the restrictions of 2020, the enthusiasm was truly felt and at its highest, manifesting as a clear sign of the love and passion that surrounds the world ofour beloved Arabian horses. 19th and 20th of September was all in the sign of the European Championship 2020, which included a new catalogue, new judges and ofcourse new high quality horses too. The DC committee for this show consisted of Dr. &ils Ismer (DE), Mrs. Irena Cieslak (PL), Mrs. Elisabeth Chat (AT) and Mr. Peter Hegemann (DE). The judges invited for the European Championship were Mr. Klaus G. Beste (DE), Mr. Peter Birch (DK), Mrs. Claudia Darius (DE), Mr. Robbie den Hartog (&L) and Mr. Urs Aeschbacher (CH). During the show, between the classes and the championships we had the opportunity and honor to award three of the winners of the "European Championship Sport Arabians 2020" (TuttoArabi September Edition), an event dedicated exclusively to ridden Arabian horses.
Despite all the problems of this disastrous year, the European Championship 2020 was held with the best possible atmosphere and created a much needed escapism for everyone. Dare I say that we will highly unlikely see another organization with the same characteristics and combinations actually make an event like this one, in such a successful way. &ot to mention the extremely short amount of time given to organize all the shows. Thanks to the sponsors, thanks to the technical staff, thanks to the courage of all those present, and finally thanks to Mr. President Jaroslav Lacina, who has even in these challenging times given a strong signal of confidence to everyone in our community, as far as the shows are concerned. &ext important show is planned to be in Paris, which may also prove to be a big challenge to organize in these times, but a show that will hopefully run in the same direction as the ones in Prague. With safety, wonderful atmosphere and a memorable success. &ow I will as always leave you to the results provided by Arabian Essence and the photos by the official photographers Mr. Alessio Azzali (IT), Mrs. Renata Kolรกล ovรก (CZ). www.tuttoarabi.com - TUTTO ARABI | 165

TRAPANI ARABIAN HORSE CUP 2020
T
he tenth edition of the Ecaho International Class C show ended with an excellent result of participating audience and horses. Organizers of the event is the association " uovo Gruppo Equestre Monte Erice" and its promoter for many years Mr. Antonio Culcasi. The show took place in two days, Saturday 3rd and Sunday 4th October, at the equestrian center "Pietra Dei Fiori" in Bruca in Buseto Palizzolo. Mr. Antonio Culcasi has been employing an exceptional stafffor years and this is the reason for the growing success ofthe event. In order to judge the 72 horses from all over Europe were invited Mr. Tomasz Tarczynski (Po), Mrs. Irina Stigler (IT) and Dr. Fausto Scanzi (IT). Ringmaster was Mr. Marco Capelli, who also was part of the organizational staff for many years, and composed together with Mrs. Barbara Raso and Mr Giuseppe Fantauzzo the Disciplinary Commission. The results were given by the voice of Mrs Vittoria Abbenante. The streaming was by Arabianessence.
During the show were also awarded the titles of the "Sicilian Championship" that were won by Maranfusa Cetty (Wadee Al Shaqab x GS Soave), bred and owned by Mr Salvatore Graffato for females and by Marcipan Gold (DA Marcipan x Amara DE), bred by Mr Campagna Santino and owned by Mr Muscolino Giuseppe Domenico for males. Best in show was unanimously awarded to Mystica Khaleesi (MARWA Al Shaqab x Mystica Johara) bred by Mr Mcglinn Jeffrey William and owned by Mr Wail Mahamid. Mr. Culcasi has already announced the appointment for 2021 with Trapani Arabian Horse Cup, which will take place again in the same location considering the success achieved this year despite the months ofepidemic crisis that we all well know. Enjoy the pictures taken by Mr Giovanni Messinese.

reeding Arabian horses is a great passion with high hopes in store. Picking the most beautiful mares, and selecting the best fillies they have been producing over the years - is the primary task of a good and responsible breeder. And, after that, the search begins to find the right Stallion.

Woody Arabians breeding program, sometimes requiring the setting up of dedicated partnerships with Italian and worldwide fellow breeders. This was certainly the case of Royal Colours (True Colours x Xtreme Wonder), an extraordinary Straight Egyptian stallion who has strongly contributed to the enhancement of world breeding industry. HDB Shir Ibn Massai (Massai Ibn Marenga x Mayana) is certainly another pivotal stallion in the history of the Arabian horse, a great sire himself who is leaving outstanding quality progeny in Brazil. Last but not least, we need to mention Dominic M (Da Vinci FM x Rosa La Valentina), which has been efficiently managed by Noemie Zeller through an extensive and strong promotion, thereby offering many breeders a unique opportunity to introduce in their breeding program this amazing stallion, a choice that turned up to be crucial for Woody Arabians too.
More recently, Noemie Zeller has acquired the ownership of a new and important colt together with her friend Farhang Fazeli from Iran. This incredible horse is Berwaz Al Bustan, a young son by Fa El Rasheem and out of BS Noor, a gorgeous daughter by Royal Colors and out JJ Monalisa, one of the most beautiful matriarchs from the UAE, owned by Al Bustan Stables of the Taweedi family. Al Bustan is the name of the stables where Berwaz Al Bustan came to light surrounded by the loving care of his breeders and all the staff. As a foal, he was then transferred to Dubai Arabian Horse Stud where he was trained to participate in morphology shows, and his style and beauty have already conquered many arenas of the UAE show circuit. As for example the Bronze Champion Yearling title at the Emirates breeders Championship in 2018 out of 4 yearling colt classes. JJ Monalisa is a direct daughter to Magnum Psyche and out

of the mare NV Angelica. When bred to Royal Colours, JJ Monalisa bore BS Noor, a bombshell of beauty and genetic power. Once this powerful genetic pool was made available to FA El Rasheem, Berwaz Al Bustan came to life. Woody has been impressed by Berwaz Al Bustan ever since he was only a foal; this little gorgeous colt came to represent his secret dream in every way, to the extent that his wife Noemie and the Iranian breeder Fahrang Fazeli decided to take the next big step of buying him. The arrival of Berwaz Al Bustan in Italy brought everyone much joy. The beautiful colt was warmly welcomed in his new home by his new owners, but not only by them. Soon afterwards, Berwaz Al Bustan did catch the eye of famous Italian handler Paolo Capecci and the whole staff at the training centre. At his debut in Europe, Berwaz Al Bustan hit the arena
at the 2020 Menton show, France, where he obtained the highest score among all the colts, and ranked ex-equo with the first in class, then winning second place. On Sunday championships, Berwaz Al Bustan entered the arena with his high presence. In the expert hands of his handler |Paolo Capecci, he gave an excellent performance and was acclaimed Bronze medal, making Noëmie. and Farhang very proud as well as the whole family. After a couple of months, Berwaz Al Bustan confirmed his unrivalled morphological quality and amazing attitude at the 2020 Prague InterCup, Czech Republic, where he was crowned Unanimous Gold Medal Champion and cheered by the crowed. Now, Berwaz Al Bustan’s breeding career has begun, and his first crop of foals is expected for 2021. We wish all the breeders who believe in this young exotic colt, the very best and we can’t wait to see what comes next…

Arabian Futurity Europe
H
ost of the Arabian Futurity Europe Finals this year is for the first time “Tierpark Ströhen” managed by the Ismer Family.
Located in Ströhen (Germany), it is a magical location for the finals of the Arabian Futurity Europe and an attractive experience for competitors and visitors in these unprecedented Covid influenced times. The pandemic sadly led to some unavoidable cancelations, but those fortunate enough to attend thoroughly enjoyed the event.
“Arabian Futurity Europe” - founded in 2004 - is an initiative for breeders ofArabian horses within Europe, with the intention of bringing new energy to Arabian horse breeding and Arabian horse events in Europe. With an impressive collection of some of Europe’s highest quality breeding stallions this initiative allows breeders the opportunity to purchase one of these breedings in an open auction. The resulting horse born out of this breeding may be automatically enlisted to compete in the Futurity 244 | TUTTO ARABI - www.tuttoarabi.com
Competition, which offers an attractive amount of prize money. This concept provides an opportunity to both sides involved in Arabian horse breeding — the breeder and the stallion owner. For the breeder, it brings stallions/breedings of excellent quality together at one place. During the internet-based auction, interested parties may place a bid online (after registering on the official website). The highest bid for each breeding wins not only the distinguished breeding itself, but also a ticket to the Futurity Cup. The foal, Yearling and Junior born out ofthe breeding can compete for an honorable championship with prize money for all ofthe top 5 competitors. The stallion owner who enters a stallion’s breeding in the auction also has the chance to compete for the “Get of Sire
Arabian Futurity Europe
Award, ” which is not only an honorable award, but also offers some attractive prize money. Moreover, the Arabian Futurity Auction and Cup promotes the stallions European-wide and offers a market with excellent opportunities. text by Giorgia Mauri photos by Alessio Azzali, Simone Bergamaschi
he perfect location of Centro Ippico in Vermezzo hosted also this year the event dedicated to the straight Egyptian Arabian horses. The World Straight Egyptian Championship, at its 8th edition, is always a special event and one of the most important appointments of the year, very well promoted in all specialized magazines and also in national TV and press. Tutto Arabi and Desert Heritage were proud to be Media Partners of the event again this year.
Amazing organization in fantastic atmosphere were offered to the guests considering the moment all the world is living due to the covid sanitary emergency. Especially this year Organizers strove to gather the best of
the best of the straight Egyptian horse breeders despite the possibilities to travel and move horses were limited. The place was simply amazing, 5 stars boxes, perfect ring and organization, VIP helicopters for the judges, luxury scenery: this was the show offered by the Organizing Committee. The event was perfectly organized by Special Event Srl and Barbara Morali and Morali & C. Thanks to the professional support of Mrs Christianne Chazel and Mrs Dominik Briot as Show Consultants the event went into higher level and we can confirm that World Straight Egyptian Championship in Vermezzo remains the

best event nowadays for Straight Egyptian Arabian horses and an event that can not be missed. The quality of the horses was remarkable, in every class the fight was as a World Championship of Straight Egyptian deserved. This show is the most important Straight Egyptian event in the world, peerless in Italy for the importance of the VIP area, perfectly managed, and the perfection in service. There are not too many events dedicated to straight Egyptian Arabian horses so we encourage breeders to come to the World Straight Egyptian Championship in Vermezzo next year. 260 | TUTTO ARABI - www.tuttoarabi.com
Even ifthere is a small amount ofbreeders ofthis line in the world, they are capable of great passion and professionalism in maintaning these ancient and important bloodlines handed down to us through the centuries. The show reached its goal to bring the breeders to show their beautiful horses and to exhibit their abilities, and to connect all the fans. Enjoy the pictures by Alessio Azzali from the stunning days in Milano with all the results, medalists and special thophies.

NEWCOMER CHAMPIONSHIPS SPORTS ARABIANS
Most important Sport Event for purebred Arabian Horses by Elisabeth Chat z photos by Christian Kellner
Since many years together with the prestigeous European championships for Arabian Sporthorses two more Championships are offered. Masters or open Austrian Championships also qualifier for the European Championship Finals and the more and more important Newcomer Championships. On the four days event the first day is for warm up and to settle the horses and riders after the journey to Vienna from all over Europe and some years also from UAE. This Newcomer Championship should give the young riders, young horses a serious chance to reach a title without the concurrence of the old stars. The level of the Newcomer Championships is medium, in all the same disciplines as the other two Championships: Classic Pleasure, Hunter Pleasure, Dressage, Show Jumping, Ladies Side Saddle, Western & Classic Traditional Arabian Riding, Reining, Trail, Western Pleasure, Ranch riding. The classes are open for all participants with all horses. For the Title Newcomer Championship only this horse/rider combination is accepted who had never before reached either a 1.st 2.nd or 3rd place in Master/ Open Austrian Championships or the same in European Finals. But to have all riders in the classes for collecting points for the European All Around Championships they all start together. This shows also the Newcomers where in the normal ranking their result is placed. Special Trophies, ribbons & sashes are given to the Newcomers! The second day – Friday- is always the day of this Newcomer Championships.
First time we do a report of each of these three Championships. Here the NEWCOMER Championships results and report and photos. In the next issue the Masters Championships will be reported. This year two famous horses & riders dominate the Newcomer Championships: LOGGIA the chestnut mare bred in Michalow and owned by Gut Fronleitenhof AUT ridden by Susanne Schuh won three GOLD Medals!! TRAIL, Western Pleasure & Ladies Side Saddle. Loggia was very well trained by Susanne Schuh and did her best! The other extraordinary horse & rider was Neele Schlichte & Al Ashar from Germany. The grey stallion was shown in an extreme good Show Jumping style and result. Neele was also with her 11 years the youngest rider of the whole event. Not one mistake they did! Starting with the title in Newcomer Championship they went through to all other Championships up to the Europeans with no faults!! Also new in the family of riders of this event was Daniela Entner with her very talented gelding Erasmus with GOLD in Dressage. Followed by many very good other results. The bay mare Baikal´s Shangrila & Leona Böck, both after babybreak, could show in Ranch Riding their great talent and received the GOLD medal. Ranch Riding and Hunter Pleasure was first time a Championship class.

Newcomer Hunter Pleasure Champion was reached by a very good Showjumper: stallion Ojinegro Qahira & Antje Aigner GOLD. GOLD in Reining won with extreme correct circles and very good speed & very correct flying leadchanges, one of the best Reiningriders of Austria Sebastian Eisler with the shortly to this discipline changed stallion NAIN the last Drug son. Reining is as Dressage a difficult discipline where correctness and control over the horse is very important. The need of a large arena for training was in this corona times not possible. But Sebastian showed NAIN in the best way. Since several years Traditional Arabian Riding is in two classes split: western & classic.
Gold Western Julia Heindl & mare Zahim´s Alina from Germany with very loveley costume and Classic Helena Byrne and gelding Galahad from Denmark. Friday evening after the first Championships is always a welcome dinner for all riders & followers by the FAS organizers to meet & great. q
