While staying in Bahrain, all Arabian horse aficionados should pay a visit to the amazing Al Orasia Stud. Located in Al Jasra, a charming costal village situated on the western coast of the Kingdom, this adorable place is a perfect combination of traditional Arabic design with a subtle touch of modern style. Born in Saudi Arabia, Sheikha Muna Alrashed, the owner and founder of Al Orasia, seems to have Arabian horses in her blood. Her ancestors trace back to the esteemed Anaza Tribe who have bred and cherished Arabian horses for centuries. No wonder that within what seems like a blink of an eye, Al Orasia and its horses have become recognised in both Bahraini and European showgrounds.

Sheikha Muna made every effort to create a magical place where, together with her charming family, she blesses her guests with unceasing kindness and hospitality. It was a great pleasure for me as a representative of Tutto Arabi Magazine to attend an evening presentation at Sheikha Muna

Al Orasia, where I had a unique chance to admire the carefully designed facilities together with their gorgeous inhabitants. The evening concluded with an interesting conversation that I had with Sheikha Muna over dinner.

Kamila Kozlowska during the Al Orasia visit with the filly ORA Almozoon (Kanz Albidayer x Mezna Al Zobair by Equator)

Kamila: How has the story of Al Orasia begun? M. Alrashed: In 2015, when I graduated from the university as an Executive MBA and started a regular job, I felt I needed something that would give me a bit of entertainment in my everyday routine. I have always had passion for horses, so I decided to buy one for riding and endurance. However, my experience in equine matters was fairly limited and I did not have a clue what to do with my horse and where to train him. Some of my friends recommended a training centre, owned by the man who shortly after became my husband. He was the one that suggested endurance might not be my thing and encouraged me to start my own breeding programme. At the beginning, I was not sure about it, but one day I woke up and saw the empty space in my family farm. On this day, I decided to build a small stud

where I could keep my horses. Although I originally come from Saudi Arabia, my home and my heart were already in Bahrain and I decided to build and register the stud in here. With the help of my husband, also a great horseman, my breeding programme commenced at the beginning of 2017. Initially, it consisted of just two mares. I must admit that the first generation of the horses I bred myself was not very good quality. At that time, my knowledge of breeding was very limited and my programme was based on nothing but luck. Yet one of my husband’s friends, while visiting our farm, suggested that we should participate in a local show, where the quality of horses would be thoroughly evaluated. He also recommended a trainer that we employed to prepare our horses for the show. The training started around two months before the event,

STUD

so the time for preparation was limited. Still, my horses were slightly better than the competition and one of my colts became Bronze Champion. Not long after, I celebrated a triple success when the three maternal half-brothers out of Bint Al Lail (El Gameer x Doudja Al Lail by Fahim Hisan) won all Gold Champion Male titles at the 4th Bahrain Produce Arabian Horse Show. This amazing achievement awakened my interest in shows, so I leased the gorgeous grey Bint Hazy Al Khalediah from Al Khashab Stud with the intention to show her in Europe. It resulted in another two medals: gold at the 2017 Chantilly World Cup and silver at the 2017 Menton Mediterranean and Arab Countries Show. Also in 2017, I bought a two-year-old bay filly bred by Knocke Arabians from Belgium. Magnum’s Fortune KA (QR Marc x FS

Magnum’s Madonna by Magnum Psyche) won three titles in Bahrain in less than two years and now, she is also an amazing broodmare. After all my achievements in the show ring, the aim to breed high-quality horses became more important to me than simply leasing or buying them from someone else. I will continue to develop and enhance my breeding programme until I achieve my goals and then, I will present the outcomes in the European showgrounds. Kamila: Where does the name Al Orasia come from? M. Alrashed: It is actually an abbreviation of my family name; each letter comes from either my first name or my family name. But what I also like about it is that it sounds like a combination of Europe and Asia.

Menton 2019 congratulating the beautiful Noft

Kamila: Why Arabian horses? What is so special about them? M. Alrashed: What makes Arabian horses special to me is their unique type. It does not mean that I do not take into consideration other qualities, like refined head, long neck, complete body and high tail carriage, but to me the type is a predominant feature. I need to highlight the fact that refined head does not necessarily equal an extreme face. And I love horses which are both typey and complete. Kamila: If you were to describe an Arabian horse in one word only, what would that be and why? M. Alrashed: Authentic, as Arabian horses were part of our ancestors’ lives. The famous Anaza line which blessed the worlds’ breeding with such legendary individuals as Anaza El Farid (Ruminaja Ali x Bint Deenaa by Ansata Ibn Halima) can be traced back to my ancestors, the Anaza Tribe. I feel honoured that my ancestors were the

48 | TUTTO ARABI - www.tuttoarabi.com

breeders of such a pure and prepotent line. Kamila: Can you please tell us something about your breeding vision and how it has changed or developed over the years? M. Alrashed: First of all, I believe in quality, not quantity. My three years’ experience in attending the shows and visiting important breeders all over the world makes me focus on a small number of high-quality individuals. I have noticed that many big farms tend to either sell their horses at auctions or give them away. Why would I waste my time and energy as well as the hard work of my team if, at the end of the day, it does not bring a desired effect. Additionally, having good broodmares as a foundation is essential in my opinion. I have bought a few fillies that I think will greatly benefit my breeding programme but if they do not produce good offspring, I will try something else. I also try to use new bloodlines to change the style of breeding and bring something new

STUD to the arena. The trends change every two or three years and if you want to succeed, you need to keep up with the current fashion. Presently, I am heading towards the Straight Egyptian stallions with the aim to breed them to my mares of mixed origin.

complete her. In fact, this half-Polish mare made me more interested in the Polish bloodlines which, until not that long ago, were slightly ambiguous to me. But having this mare here and seeing what she can produce makes me want to visit Poland at the next available opportunity.

Kamila: Which horses have had the greatest influence on your breeding programme? M. Alrashed: All the stallions I have used in my breeding so far have had some positive influence on the next generations but it is the Straight Egyptian stallions in general as well as the WH Justice line that have vastly improved my breeding by adding a bit of refinement to my mares.

Kamila: Can you name three horses that you consider the pillars of the breed? M. Alrashed: My short experience as a breeder allows me to mostly talk about the contemporary horses of great importance, which to me are: Al Lahab (Laheeb x The Vision HG Thee Desperado), WH Justice (Magnum Psyche x Vona Sher-Renea by El Sher-Mann) and Marwan Al Shaqab (Gazal Al Shaqab x Little Liza Fame by Fame VF) when it comes to their value as breeding stallions. As far as the most important show champions are concerned, I would like to mention Excalibur EA (Shanghai EA x Essence of Marwan EA by Marwan Al Shaqab) and Sundown KA (QR Marc x L Serenella by Turki Al Rayyan). Speaking of Excalibur, I have recently leased a yearling colt by him, the beautiful bay RDS Armani (out of Stellaris BPA), because I believe that he is an upcoming show champion and an exciting breeding prospect.

Kamila: Why did you decide to move most of your breeding horses to Europe? M. Alrashed: There is more than one reason behind my decision. First of all, the number of shows held locally is very limited. Also, Bahrain is quite strict with its quarantine regulations, so it is very hard to move the horses around. It is much easier to bring them back here once a year for a show. Additionally, there are excellent breeding facilities and very experienced people spread across the Old Continent. And even the weather in Europe is better for the horses. Due to extremely high temperatures in Bahrain, they spend roughly 5-6 months of the year in the stables. I believe they are much happier in Europe, enjoying their lives in the pastures. I only keep a few horses here at Al Orasia so that I can enjoy them and present them at the local shows. Kamila: When you choose a mare for your breeding programme, what are the most important characteristics that she should possess? M. Alrashed: I need to see the mare first. If I find her beautiful and if she touches my heart, I am trying to find out more about her pedigree. When it comes to mares, an extreme face is not the feature I am looking for. I would rather choose one that is complete, meaning she has refined type, correct conformation, long neck and powerful movement. The face needs to be beautiful, but not necessarily extreme. The stallion can do the rest. For example, Mezna Al Zobair (Equator x Farasha Al Zobair by Juwel OS), whom you saw in the presentation here, is a beautiful mare although her face is far from being extremely dished. However, she has all the characteristics that I need for a great stallion to

Kamila: Can you name any horses that, every time you see them, take your breath away? M. Alrashed: I must admit that first horse that comes to my mind is RDS Exquisite (Excalibur EA x Angelica KS). I am the lucky owner of this amazing bay yearling, who became Gold Champion Yearling Filly at the 2020 Arabian Horse Weekend in the Netherlands. Kamila: Can you name one horse that you consider the epitome of the Arabian breed? M. Alrashed: In regards to the older generations, I would say it is Magnum Psyche (Padron’s Psyche x A Fancy Miracle by Sasaki). Unfortunately, I only saw him in the photos but his influence on the Arabian horse breeding is still visible in horses that are several generations ahead of him; in their correct conformation and amazing attitude. When it comes to the new generation, I would point out to the very showy Excalibur EA who always brings great results in breeding. Kamila: Are there any horses that you hold dear to your heart? M. Alrashed: As far as my own horses are concerned, I would like to mention Magnum’s Fortune KA, Apollonia

STUD

K (EKS Alihandro x Annika) and RDS Exquisite. No doubt Magnum’s Fortune is beautiful but her amazing attitude makes you love her even more. When she snorts and moves with this upright tail carriage, you cannot help but fall in love with her. Similarly, the beautiful and charming Apollonia enchants everyone around by her kind and sweet disposition. With regard to Exquisite, there is not much I would like to say apart from that once I present her to the world, people will fall in love with her. Speaking of the horses that I bred myself, I cannot forget about the two exciting fillies: the grey ORA Haala (S.M.A. Magic One x Magnum’s Fortune KA by QR Marc) and the bay ORA Aljazla (Nadeer Al Rashediah x Saffire by Shanghai EA). Kamila: Who is your favourite mare and stallion at the moment? M. Alrashed: Out of all the amazing Arabian horses in the world, I am unable to choose one favourite mare. Both Mozn Albidayer (S.M.A. Magic One x Mattaharii by Magnum Chall HVP) and Noft Alnayfat (Ajman Moniscione x Eagleridge Passionata by Sanadik El Shaklan) are special to me. In my opinion, they are the most beautiful mares in the world. I admire Mozn for her athletic body, sloping shoulder and gentle demeanour and I adore Noft for her exquisite type, exotic head and huge intelligent eyes. It is slightly easier for me to choose my favourite stallion, which would be the aforementioned Excalibur EA. Kamila: What could you generally say about breeding in Bahrain? How has it changed over the years? M. Alrashed: In these last four years that I have been actively involved in the Arabian horse industry, the breeding in Bahrain developed quite considerably. It must be said that Bahraini breeders work very hard on improving the quality of their horses and very often they succeed. Kamila: In your opinion, what direction is the whole Arabian industry going at the moment? M. Alrashed: I must admit that it is a very difficult question! In my opinion, the industry is going in several different directions. Firstly, there are people who are mostly focused on money and business rather than on the wellbeing of horses. Instead of taking care of these beautiful creatures, they become more materialistic. When they breed a great individual, they build a strong 50 | TUTTO ARABI - www.tuttoarabi.com

marketing campaign for it and sell it for an astronomical price. The second group enjoy their breeding and do their best to breed high-quality horses but, at the same time, they let other people benefit from it. If they have a very good stallion, they sell its semen. If they own great mares, they sell their embryos so that other people can improve their breeding programmes. The last sector is what I would describe as monopoly. If they have an amazing stallion, they will not let other people use it. They will just breed their own mares, enter shows and win. Do not get me wrong, it is fine to enjoy what you and your team work hard for and to make money. The problem starts when business is the only thing that people are interested in and the prices become exaggerated. When I want to buy a horse, I always follow the advice of Sheikh Abdullah bin Mohamed Al Thani, the owner of Al Zobair Stud, not to buy an expensive horse but to buy a horse that I think is good as not all highly priced horses win. Most of the time, I deal with people from the second sector of the industry, who dearly love their horses and sell them at reasonable prices. To me, a reasonable price is the one that matches the quality of a horse and uniqueness of its pedigree. Kamila: Do you think any changes need to be introduced to put the industry on the right path? M. Alrashed: I hope the industry focuses more on the horse and its wellbeing rather than on money and business. At the end of the day, we are talking about a living creature that deserves to be respected. Kamila: What do you consider your most spectacular success over these past few years? M. Alrashed: I feel proud and happy when my horses win at the shows but I equally enjoy breeding and taking care of them. From my first steps at the European showgrounds in the summer of 2017, I achieved great success by winning the first Bahraini medal at the 2018 World Championships in Paris with my beautiful grey filly Israa AH (Wadee Al Shaqab x Zhared Dreamz JTA by QR Marc). But I also love when people come to my farm and compliment my horses, as it gives me a sense of pride and fulfilment. Kamila: Where do you see Al Orasia in 5 years from now? M. Alrashed: I dream about filling the empty boxes of my barn with high-quality horses that I would also like to introduce to the wider Arabian horse community.

STUD The short story of Al Orasia suggests that, with deep love and passion for Arabian horses, one does not need countless years of experience to become a successful breeder. Both Sheikha’s ancestral heritage and her appreciation for the beauty and sweet disposition of these amazing animals have helped her in making well thought-out decisions with regard to Al Orasia’s breeding programme. With a strong focus on quality rather than on quantity of her breeding stock, Sheikha’s desire to be even more successful and recognised in Europe is not far from becoming reality. But most importantly, she deeply cares about her own animals and, at the same time, she is genuinely concerned about the future of the whole industry which, in her view, should concentrate on the wellbeing of horses more than on anything else. q

Haras de Montpezat is a modern and dynamic European Centre with high quality facilities. It is located in Beaucaire, a small town on the Rhône river in the south of France. This area is a perfect strategic location because of its weather and close distance to other important places: the Camargue region on the coast, 80 km from Marseille, 200 km from Nice, 500 km from Milan, 650 km from Paris and 300 km from Barcelona. The location of the farm is ideal from the point of view of close proximity to some major shows as well as the shipment of fresh and frozen semen, which cannot exceed 24 hours throughout Europe. Taking all this into consideration, Haras de Montpezat is perfectly located. Haras de Montpezat was founded as a breeding farm and a training centre and it is open to receive new horses from all over the world. As you can see in the pictures, the Centre extends over 35 hectares and has got great quality facilities.

During our visit, we met Mr. Daniel Souppat, who is the Manager of the stud farm and we interviewed him about the goals of Haras de Montpezat. Tutto Arabi: Daniel, can you tell us something about you. Daniel Souppat: I was born in Lyon, where my grandfather had horses and a big passion for these animals. As I was growing up, my passion for horses also grew. I started with buying a Polish mare (bloodlines of Probat, Eukaliptus), then a Russian mare, G Meneska (Ménes and Kajora), who had

the same mother as Gazal Al Shaqab. I have bred 25 horses over the years with the help of my wife Christiane, who takes care of the stud when I am

STUD working away. I have always been passionate about riding. “The one who has an Arabian horse has not only got a horse but a dear friend.” Personally, I have been a breeder and an ACA member (Association Nationale Française du Cheval Arabe) for 30 years. I have organized many national and international shows. In 7 years, Vichy International Arabians Horse Show gathered horses from 15 countries around the world. After that, I founded an Association (A.C.A.S.) to organize other shows in France. I am also a National Judge, DC and Ringmaster with a lot of experience all over the world and I hope that this can help me and everyone who works at Haras de Montpezat to do this wonderful job for a long time. I can support the growing of the farm and improving the genetics of our products year after year.

TA: Today, we are here at the marvellous Haras de Montpezat. We know that you have built it. Can you tell us the story behind it? DS: Yes, it is true. This Arabian horse farm in France started in 2012 and was built by me - as I am a builder - utilizing all my passion and the best technics and innovations in the field of construction. TA: What are you working on now? What are your goals as a Manager? DS: The construction was finished in 2013 and since then, I have been managing the enterprise. I would like to thank Sheikh Mohammed Bin Saud Al Qasimi for his trust. As this is a large stud, at the beginning we acted prudently. What I would like to see is good results and to achieve them, we are working hard with our team. My goal is to run the Stud Farm with:

BEST BREEDERS OF 2020 BRAZILIAN NATIONALS Arabian horse breeding in Brazil has bloomed in the recent years, spreading its invaluable influence on various breeding programs all around the world. Consequently, the Brazilian Nationals have become a must-attend event for all Arabian horse breeders and enthusiasts. Anyone that has ever attended the show must have been wondering what is the Brazilian breeders’ recipe for success. It looks as though there is no single formula and the secret ingredients seem to vary from breeder to breeder. This time, I decided to discover a heavily guarded recipe of the renowned Rach Stud, a private property of 2000 acres located on the Chapada Island in the picturesque Furnas Lake region, which is part of the large inland state of Minas Gerais. In this amazing place, which also happens to be a natural refuge for fantastic fauna including almost 200 different species of animals, the Saliba family are involved in multiple activities, like producing macadamia nuts and coffee as well as breeding cattle. It is also the place where two brothers, Ricardo and Paulo Saliba, have continued the longstanding Family tradition of breeding Arabian horses. With 35 years of experience in equine matters and with such amazing accomplishments as two prestigious titles for Best Halter Breeder and Best Performance Breeder at the 2020 Brazilian Nationals, their core ingredientes must undoubtedly be super special.

RFI Maktub x Vanity Rach (Mister Eros HX)

2020 BRAZILIAN NATIONAL SILVER CHAMPION MARE 2017 BRAZILIAN NATIONAL GOLD CHAMPION YOUNG MARE Kamila: You have been breeding Arabian horses for the last 35 years. How did it all start? Ricardo and Paulo: Our family have been involved in horse breeding since 1977. At the beginning, we bred Campolina and Mangalarga Marchador, Brazilian gaited horses, but because our ancestors come from Syria and Lebanon, our father Jamil was always obsessed with Arabians. The family tradition goes back as far as early 1900’s, when our grandfather Rachid Saliba owned an Arabian mare that competed in local races in the Syrian countryside. At the end of 1985, we decided to purchase some mares in Brazil and, in January 1986, we flew to California in a search for other bloodlines that could enhance our breeding programme. The first stop on our journey was the well-known Ventura Farms with their amazing Polish Arabians. Stunned by their beauty and strength, we decided to base our breeding programme on the Polish lineages. After visiting Ventura, we travelled to Lasma Kentucky Arabians in Scottsdale, another famous US breeder specialising in the Polish Arabians, where our admiration for their charisma grew even stronger. And then, for obvious reasons, the last stop on our journey was Poland itself. 70 | TUTTO ARABI - www.tuttoarabi.com

2020 BRAZILIAN NATIONAL SILVER CHAMPION YOUNG MARE 2019 BRAZILIAN NATIONAL GOLD CHAMPION FILLY Kamila: Do you still remember your first broodmare? Ricardo and Paulo: Of course! It was a mare with a Uruguayan pedigree that we bought in Brazil. Her name was Desdemona. However, it was the first group of mares that we imported from the USA back in 1980’s that we consider as our foundation broodmares. This collection included the classy chestnut Canntina, an Aladdinn daughter out of the US National Champion, Aristo Cantada by Ariston; the gorgeous grey Elbaa by El Paso and out of the ethereal European Champion Enklawa by Bandos. These two mares were joined by LS Varenna (Amurath Varonezh x NI Tanara by Nigatt) whose pedigree was only partially Polish. Yet she was so pretty that we decided to buy her with a filly by her side. It turned out to be a good move as the greyGwydion daughter Vanity VF became Brazilian National Champion Filly the year after. Kamila: What qualities do Polish Arabians possess that make you rate them so highly? Ricardo and Paulo: The list seems to be very long! Beautiful bewitching eyes, perfectly shaped swanlike necks, well-modelled correct bodies, athletic strength, amazing attitude and powerful movement, to name just a few. www.tuttoarabi.com - TUTTO ARABI | 71

Ricardo and Paulo Saliba - 2007 Kamila: And which of the abovementioned horses contributed the most to your breeding programe? Ricardo and Paulo: There were so many of them that it is really difficult to say. From a stallion perspective, Ekho VF (Bandos x Enora by Czort) and Gwydion (Bask x Gwyn by Comet) came at the very beginning. Then, in the 1990’s, we imported Polonez (Etap x Parma by Aswan), Armagnac (Aladdinn x Grenedyne byb Bask) and Aicyng (Aikon x Porcelyn by Bey Shah). At the beginning of the new millennium, our chief stallions included Sarmata (Pepton x Sarmacja by Gil), Eksport (Europejczyk x Esparceta by Fawor) and Almir SWSB (Alt x Espmira by Ali Mir). The last three, together with Polonez, became Brazilian National Champions. When it comes to our foundation mares, there are four that we consider very precious: the above-mentioned LS Varenna, who started our well-known V-line, with such successful descendants as Vivaldi Rach, Vandalo Rach, Voltaire Rach and Vaidosa Rach; Passion Ltd (Aladdinn x Passing Fancy by Bask), a National Champion Mare and the dam of our most influential stallion, Pavel Rach; Aluia (Ponomarev x OKW Alleluia by Aladdinn), also a National Champion Mare; and, last but not least, Peridot (Nabor x Perdida by Elkin), the progenitor of our P-line, the most successful family of Rach Stud at the moment.

Ricardo and Paulo: Again, it is not easy, but we would probably go for the incredible bay Polonez, bred by the Janow Podlaski State Stud in Poland, for his personal charisma, for becoming our first National Champion Stallion and for being a versatile sire of outstanding offspring that excelled at many disciplines, including halter, racing, endurance and performance. Our own bred Pavel Rach was also very special to us; a National Champion Colt who was a living image of his legendary grandsire Aladdinn. Passing his correct conformation onto his progeny, Pavel Rach was an excellent sire of both halter and endurance champions. 74 | TUTTO ARABI - www.tuttoarabi.com

Kamila: At first glance, your breeding vision reminds me of the old Polish philosophy to breed horses that are both show champions and great performance horses. Is this what you are trying to achieve? Ricardo and Paulo: This is exactly what we aim at in our breeding programme. Our selection criteria for halter horses include athletic capabilities, which means that the horses we choose need to have some successful sport champions in their pedigrees. The discipline does not really matter; it can be racing, endurance or performance. Additionally, all the colts and fillies chosen for breeding are submitted to a rigorous selection to ensure that their size, conformation of legs and quality of movement will enable them to become successful sport horses. We should not forget that athletic capability, resistance, velocity and agility are all componentes of the Arabian horse type. Due to all these qualities, the Arabs protected and preserved the breed for hundreds of years. We cannot afford to lose all of this now. And we are living proof that it is possible to combine beauty and classic type with functionality. At the 2020 Brazilian Nationals, we received the honours for the Best Halter Breeder as well as the Best Performance Breeder. But it has not happened in a day, it has actually been a long process, consisting of a few stages. First, our breeding programme was based on the Polish stallions that we brought from the USA and Poland, including Polonez, Armagnac, Sarmata, Eksport, Aicyng and Almir. All these stallions produced many winners and National Champions in endurance. Then, our own bred Pavel Rach by Armagnac, together with his sons Voltaire Rach and Mister Eros HX as well as his grandsons Vaillant Rach and Vesper Rach, not only became very successful show champions, but also produced great endurance and race horses. At this stage, we also reintegrated two proven stallions, Eksort Rach and Feitizzo Rach, into our breeding programme. After that, we decided to use only those stallions that proved themselves as racing or endurance horses. This includes Erastus Rach, Marei Rach, Bismarck Rach, Rhondo Rach, Lion Kong AA Rach and Araçai AA Rach. At the final stage, in order to accomplish our goal of breeding an internationally competitive Arabian horse, we imported the semen of such world-famous stallions as Mared Al Sahra, Asraa Min Albarq, Sadepers, Djevar de Graves, Seraphin Du Paon, Al Mamun Monlau, Mister Ginoux and Sir Bani Yas. We believe that a blend of our classic pedigrees with these well-known race and endurance producers will bring great results, which has already been proved by their first foals born at our farm that are just stunning!

Kamila: This is an amazing achievement which shows that a clearly defined breeding vision will eventually bring a desired outcome. As highly experienced and accomplished breeders, what could you say about the general approach to Arabian horse breeding in Brazil? Ricardo and Paulo: The halter breeding in Brazil is incredible. In our opinion, the breeders here are the best and the competition is fantastic. It is great to see more and more people breeding sport horses and supporting performance classes. Also, the current board of directors at ABCCA are giving a lot of support to the breeders involved in sport and performance activities, which is a positive thing. For many years, the Arabian horse in Brazil was considered an expensive hobby for the elite. If we want to expand the Brazilian breeding programme, we need to make sure Arabians become more popular in our country. It can be achieved by promoting the breed as a versatile horse capable of performing well in every sport discipline.

However, our most significant success is staying ahead of the competition in various areas of the Arabian horse industry; be it halter, performance, racing or endurance. Kamila: And what was the most memorable moment at a show? Ricardo and Paulo: It was probably our first Brazilian Nationals back in 1987. Nobody knew us then and we won all 3 classes of fillies that morning.

Kamila: In the video made at your stud during the Brazilian Farm Tour 2020, all your horses, including the breeding stallions, seem to have a kind and friendly disposition. What is your approach to training? Ricardo and Paulo: After 35 years of breeding and showing Arabian horses, we have seen all kinds of training techniques in many different divisions. Our own approach is to always be close to our horses and choose the most qualified trainers to school, ride and show them. The same philosophy is applied to endurance and racing. We always keep an eye on training and exercising and we develop a good relationship with our staff, including trainers, riders and jockeys. It is very important for us that they understand how much we care for our horses and that we are not interested in winning at any cost. Obviously, we want to be competitive and succeed but the welfare of our horses is of the utmost importance for us. Kamila: Do all the activities related to training of halter and sport horses happen in the same place? Ricardo and Paulo: No, our main Training and Breeding Centre known as Rach Stud Marco Zero, where we train our show horses and collect embryos from our

best halter mares, is located in Araçoiaba da Serra, 75 minutes’ drive from São Paulo City. The activity in our facility on the Chapada Island is now mainly concentrated on our endurance and race programme. Kamila: If you were to describe an Arabian horse using only 3 words, which words would that be? Ricardo and Paulo: Beautiful, smart and strong. Kamila: They truly are! But what is the most important characteristics of an Arabian horse to you and why? Ricardo and Paulo: As we have already mentioned, they are naturally beautiful; there is no question about it. Also, they have a smart personality. Sometimes we think they will start talking to us. However, what makes Arabians really special is their versatility. Maybe their trot is not as high as the one of a Saddlebred, and maybe they are unable to beat a Thoroughbred on a race track, or perform in barrel racing better than a Quarter Horse, or jump as high as a Selle Français, but they are the only breed capable of doing all these things. Besides, no other horse is able to go 160 km with an average speed of 25km/h; it is just unbelievable! Arabians are surely the most versatile horses on earth!

STUD

Kamila: No doubt they are unique! Are you able to name an Arabian that you consider as the epitome of the breed? Ricardo and Paulo: Talking about halter, there are so many horses around the world that truly inspire us. However, we are lucky to have two mares at our own farm that fulfil many of our expectations of how an Arabian horse should look like in its prime. These two mares, Preferida Rach and Vaidosa Rach, are also the ruling Brazilian National Silver Champion Young Mare and Silver Champion Senior Mare respectively. Kamila: Are there any historical horses that you wish you could use in your breeding programme but it is no longer possible? Ricardo and Paulo: In the past, there were several horses that we wanted to use but some had already been gone and the problem with others was that the export of their frozen semen was impossible at the time. The legendary Polish stallion Bask we were unable to use for the first reason and it was a real shame. As a halter, performance and racing winner but, most importantly, as a sire, Bask changed the Arabian horse breeding forever. We imported many of his granddaughters and grandsons when our breeding program commenced. Additionally, we purchased his daughter Bornaska (out of Borszna by Kasztel) as well as one of his best sons, Gwydion, who unfortunately passed away only 10 months after his arrival. Another stallion that we really wanted to use was the elegant Eukaliptus. Unfortunately, we were unable to import his frozen semen. There was something very special in simply being around him. He had a beautiful head with some of the biggest black eyes we have ever seen, a long swan-like neck and great movement exposing his strong limbs. Obviously, he had his faults and would have to be used carefully, but he had the potential to improve the type of our mares at the early stages of our breeding program.

Kamila: These two Polish stallions are legends in their own right! But can you name one horse that is especially close to your heart? Ricardo and Paulo: So many horses will stay in our hearts forever and we are unable to name just one. Polonez, Passion, Pavel, Voltaire, Marei, Vaidosa, Preferida, Epopeu… I guess this is the problem of being a breeder; we just cannot stop loving them as well as the next generations... Kamila: In your opinion, in which direction is the Arabian horse industry going to develop in the future? Ricardo and Paulo: The Arabian horse has a great future ahead if the breeders never forget that, besides being beautiful, this horse is an athlete! Although we cannot expect from every halter horse to become successful in other divisions such as racing or endurance, we must at least expect that it is capable of becoming a good riding horse. For this reason, such qualities as good temper and correct legs cannot be put aside and considered unimportant. After our conversation, I was left with the impression that there is more than one core ingredient in Ricardo and Paulo’s recipe for success. Their impressive achievements have resulted from a carefully selected blend of deep love and passion for Arabian horses mixed with many years of experience in breeding both halter and performance champions. This successful combination has been further enriched with a clearly defined approach to breeding and seasoned with a strong belief that Arabians are the most versatile horses on earth. But the recipe of Rach Stud is not secret at all! In fact, the Saliba brothers are more than happy to share their vision with other breeders to help them appreciate and preserve all the amazing attributes of Arabians that make them the most unique and versatile breed of horses in the world.

Gaskonia SOME MEMORIES OF

(Probat - Gizela/Palas)

by Jolanta Gębka z photos by Sylwia Iłenda The eye-catching mare Gaskonia (Probat - Gizela / Palas) was born in 1987 at the Horse Stud in Michałów. She passed away in January 2018 at the home stud six days before turning 31. Probat (Pohaniec - Borexia / Exelsjor) - a stallion bred at Blommeröd Stud in Sweden, who was her father, was born in 1975 and also had Polish roots. Probat’s father Pohaniec, son of Comet, was born at the Horse Stud in Michałów in 1965. Exelsjor (Aquinor - Eleonora / Witraż), on the other hand, was bred in 1963 in Janów Podlaski. He went to Sweden as a one-year-old colt and got the title of the National Champion of Sweden in 1966. His daughter Borexia, mother of Probat, became the National Champion of Sweden in 1974. Probat

stayed in Poland on a lease between 1980 and 1984 and in 1986. His offspring were characterized not only by their beauty but also bravery and stamina. Probat enriched the Polish breeding with excellent herd mares and valuable leading stallions and therefore rebuilt the Kuhailana Afas family. His three daughters and three sons won the titles of the National Champions of Poland. These were, of course, Gascony and the mares: Egzotyk (Elana by Elf ), who triumphed in 1991, and Empress (Emfaz by Eukaliptus), who became the Champion in 1998. When it comes to the stallions, these were: Fawor (Fatma by Anarchist), Garrison (Głownia by El Paso) and Janów’s Pamir (Parma

by Aswan). One of Probat’s most valuable sons is Michałów’s Fawor who did great on the track and on the show rings. In 1983, he became the World Junior Champion Stallion in Paris and in 1990 the Senior Champion Stallion of Poland. Gascony’s mother, mare Gizela (Palas - Gilza / Esparto), was also bred in Michałów. Both Gizela and her mother Gilza were immensely meritorious for Polish breeding. In 1985 Gizela gave birth to the filly Garonne by Fanatyk, who in 1994 became the mother of the “epoch-making” stallion Ganges by Monogramm. Ganges combines the features of an ideal Arabian stallion: beauty, courage, athletic build and efficient, sweeping movement. He also has a successful racing, show and breeding career. Ganges won the title of the Junior Reserve Champion Stallion of Poland twice in 1995 and 1996. He became the International Champion Stallion in Blommeröd and Best in Show (2000), Senior Champion Stallion of Poland (2001), Reserve Champion Cup in Aachen (2001), winner of the

Top Ten US Championship (2002), Stallion Champion in Columbus (2002) and Reserve Champion of the USA (2003). To this day, Ganges still proudly “rules” in Michałów. Beautiful and harmonious Georgia by Monogramm is another amazing daughter of Gizela. This milky-white lady is a dreamy horse. In 2014, at the National Show in Janów Podlaski she won the title of the Reserve Champion of Poland, and her score of 95,17 points was the highest score of the show. This high score was made up of seven “20s”: the whole row for type and movement, and one for head and neck. At the age of 21, at the Pride of Poland Auction in 2015, she was sold for €105,000 to Athbah Stud in Saudi Arabia. The decision of Michałów Stud to sell Georgia raised a great deal of emotion since the mare has a considerable circle of fans. Georgia certainly belongs to the horses who catch the eye and heart of horse lovers and stay in their memory forever. For horses like Georgia the show ring is like a stage on which they give

their own, individual performance. Georgia spent 21 years in Michałów, representing Poland on the international scene with dignity and success. Let’s keep in mind that she was the Reserve Senior Champion Mare of Poland in Janów Podlaski in 2014, Silver Medalist of the Senior Mare Championship at the Al Khalediah European Arabian Horse Festival in Nowe Wrońska in 2014, she was also in the “Top Five” of the Senior Mare World Championship - Salon du Cheval in Paris in 2009. Michałów’s mare is the embodiment of everything that makes Polish Arabians famous together with an extraordinary soul which lights up her hypnotizing eyes to which nobody can be indifferent. In 2000, Georgia became a mother of a future Champion, Galilea by Laheeb. Galilea won the title of the National Senior Champion Mare of Poland in 2005 and repeated her success in Paris, where she was promoted to the World Senior Champion Mare. In 2002, Gaskonia won the Senior Mares Class at the National Show in Janów Podlaski. At the same show, her son Grafik by Eucalyptus, born in 1996, firstly won the 4-8 year old Stallions GALILEA - 2000, Laheeb x Georgia

Class, and then won the title of the Reserve Champion Stallion of Poland. Galilea, Georgia’s daughter, came second in the 2-year-old Fillies Class, and the aforementioned Probat’s daughter - Eskalopka obtained the score of 94.67 points, which then translated into the title of the Senior Reserve Champion. However, XXVIII National Arabian Horse Show in Janów Podlaski in 2006 turned out to be “historic” for Gaskonia. Nineteen-year-old Michałów-bred mare became the Polish Champion and Best in Show! This success was even greater because she had to face other Michałów’s stars: Embra (Monogramm - Emilda / Pamir), Zagrobla (Monogramm - Zguba / Enrilo) and Kwestura (Monogramm - Kwesta / Pesennik). Gaskonia confirmed her great form by also obtaining the highest score of the show, i.e. 93.67 points, which consisted of six “20” (three for head and neck and three for movement). What is more, Gaskonia’s two sons, Grafik and Gaspar by Emigrant born in 1998, also competed at Janów’s ring. Gaspar became a leader in the 4-8 year old Stallions Class after getting the second highest score of the show, i.e. 93.33 points, including

four “20”. Grafik also won his 9-year-old and older Stallions Class with a total of 92.00 points. In the championship, the stallions also decided to divide the titles among themselves: Gaspar won the title of the Senior Champion Stallion, and Grafik became the Reserve Champion. At the auction, however, Georgia’s full sister, Gehenna, turned out to be the most expensive horse as her bidding stopped at €180k.

At the Spring Show in Białka, two-year-old Gaspar (2000) became the Polish Junior Champion Stallion and Best in Show! A year later (2001) he also won the title of Junior Champion Stallion in Warsaw, and in 2005 he won the title of Senior Champion Stallion at the show in Bełżyce. In 2006, besides the title of the Champion of Poland, he won the title of the Reserve Champion Stallion in Bełżyce.

In his show career, Grafik was the fourfold National Senior Reserve Champion Stallion of Poland (in 2002, 2005, 2006 and 2007). In 2008, he finally won the title of the Senior Champion Stallion of Poland. He also won the “Top Ten” title at the Senior Stallion World Championships in Paris twice (in 2007 and 2008). In addition, in 2007 Grafik became the European Reserve Champion Stallion in Verona in 2004 got the title of the Stallion Champion at the show in Falbork and Bełżyce, and in 2002, he also won the title of the Champion at the show in Warsaw.

It should be mentioned that Gaskonia’s first son, Gaskończyk by Russian stallion Menes (Naberg - Metropolia / Priboj), born in 1993 and bred by SK Tiersk, was sold abroad quite quickly. In 1995, the only daughter of Gascony, mare Garsoniera by Wojsław, was born. Garsoniera ended up at the private Polish Agricola Farm Stud, previously known as Tarus Arabians Stud. Gaskonia did not leave Michałów her female successor. However, she played an important role as a foster mother at the stud. q

An eye for vision… with Elba Training Center In the heart of Belgium…

by Talitha Bakker z photos by Alessio Azzali, Glenn Jacobs, Jan Kan, Kelly Delen, Arabian Insider by Paola Drera

In the heart of Belgium, just ten minutes away from Brussels Airport, we visit Elba Training Center, a new and upcoming training facility founded by two young people: Tony Bauwens and Kelly Delen. In the charming village of Kampenhout, we meet up with them and their horses to find out what their “eye for vision” is all about. The stables are easy accessible and only thirty minutes away from two of Belgium’s most vibrant cities: Brussels and Leuven, which makes a visit to Elba Training center even more enjoyable for their clients. When walking into the large, brand new barn you get a serene feeling. The sound of relaxed horses munching away on their hay, in combination with the wide corridors and the spacious horse stalls, (which measure 5m by 3m) give a sense of peace and quiet to any horse lover. Through the stall window of each stable, every individual horse has a view of the entire barn.

Adjacent to the Arabian horse barn, there’s a second corridor which accommodates the warmblood horses. Not only are Tony and Kelly known for their love for the Arabian horse, they are also passionate breeders of dressage horses and take great joy in their riding horses. They love sharing their passion and their excellent facilities with like minded people, who have their own horses in boarding with Elba Training Center and make use of this lovely place. When you walk trough Elba Training Center you see a variety of horses and riders, disciplines at all levels. From Andalusian horses to jumping horses, to dressage horses, competing at the highest level, all call Elba Training Center their home. It’s no surprise that their Arabian horses present themselves in a relaxed and happy manner in the show ring, because, as Kelly says: “At Elba they are and need to be, more than just a pretty face.” In many European training centers the emphasis on the riding aspect is gaining more popularity from the

Living at almost 1000 meters above sea level, on a mountain in the Alps, is not easy. The way up there is hard going. However, once you arrived, you enjoy a good overview and know why you left the valley behind. That is about what must have gone on in the creative life of Maya Jones, a successful Swiss lady breeder and founder of Al Jabal Arabians. She was one of the first women to decide, as early as the late 1970ies, to extend her hobby, which was riding Arabian horses, into an Arabian horse breeding operation. For her, this was not about any Purebred Arabians, but about Straight Egyptians, an Arabian breeding line that is often considered closest to the original Arabians, as they may have looked in their Arabian countries of origin. At that time, Arabian shows were rare. Anybody who owned and rode Purebred Arabians would do so out of passion and as a hobby. “Al Jabal Stud offers an incredible view of the Mountains, but even better is the view inside Al Jabal Arabians’ breeding barn” Maya says with a twinkle in her eyes. We have been knowing each other for 30 years, and I very much respect her active enthusiasm for natural proceedings in breeding. Some of her horses are related to mine via their pedigrees, so it’s usually quite fascinating to talk about successes and failures with her, reflecting what happened. Among our topics, there is often the role and the difficulties that European horse breeding has been seeing since the markets got globalized. How did we benefit from that? What did we lose? Where are we today, and which strategies are useful for improving the horses without losing the positive traits and aspects of the original breed? Find here the interesting interview with Maya Jones.

adequate endurance. I believe they are the original jewels of the desert. And because history has shown that the Abayyan cross well with other strains, especially the Saklawi strain, I started about ten years ago to outcross my mares with mostly Saklawi stallions. I would like to remind everybody of the three most influential broodmares of the last century who were of the Abayyan Om Jurays strain: Magidaa (Alaa el Din x Maysa by Anter), Hanan (Alaa el Din x Mona by Badr) and Marah (Galal x Maysa by Anter).

Latifa by M. Groger - Al Jabal Arabians Foundation mare

Monika: When did Arabian horse breeding start for you? Maya: I first fell in love with straight Egyptians back in 1979 - he was a son of Ibn Galal (Galal x Mohga by El Sareei) named Sher-Gall (Sherifa by Mahomed out of Marah), and he was an Abayyan stallion. He had the sweetest character and was both a lovely riding horse and a family horse. He really captured my heart with his spirit and loyalty. I was a young girl, and things changed forever the day that Sher-Gall came into my life. Monika: How did you get to like the Straight Egyptians, and why the horses of the Abayyan Om Juray strain in particular? Maya: I was fascinated by the history of the Egyptian Horse and decided to concentrate on breeding Abayyan straight Egyptian Arabians. I knew that there were only a few hundred breeding horses of this traditional Bedouin strain, the Abayyan Om Jurays, left in the world and I believe the horses of this line are the modern embodiment of their warhorse ancestors. They all descend from an Abayyah Um Jurays of Muhammad Ibrahim al-Hajj of Cairo, Egypt, who was purchased in 1931 by King Fuad. There are three sub-strains of the Abayyan line, most of them bred by the Shammar and Tahawi Bedouins. They are the Abayyan Seheyli, Abayyan Sherrak, and Abayyan Um Jurays, sometimes spelled Abayyan Om Grees or also called Obayan Om Grees. In the writings of the Orient experts of a few hundred years ago, there are comments about the Abayyans to be found: they were described as being similar to the Saqlawi; beautiful, elegant and showy with a high head and very good tail carriage, the legs of a racehorse and a wonderful shoulder with enormous ribcage and with great speed, agility and

124 | TUTTO ARABI - www.tuttoarabi.com

Monika: How did you finally arrive at the idea of a stud of your own with this clear-cut breeding goal? Maya: It was my cousin’s husband Felix who introduced me to straight Egyptian Arabians. I loved all horses from the time when I was a young girl, but the moment I saw the straight Egyptians for the first time, I fell in love. Felix and I would just sit together for hours; talking about the bloodlines and putting together handwritten pedigrees, going right back to the desert-bred foundations. We would print A3 sheets and write each strain in a different colour. I became so fascinated with this, and this led to an interest in the heritage of the straight Egyptian. I guess it almost became an obsession, analysing pedigrees. Professionally speaking, I studied economy (trust me, I was never able to apply that knowledge with the horses…) and added a Master of Science to my academic career. With this, I was able to travel the world as a consultant in supply chain management for a very big company. In every Country I spent time in, I would always look for Arabian Horses whenever possible. After settling down, I found this place here in the Swiss mountains, and started my straight Egyptian breeding program in earnest. I used to live in a traditional Swiss chalet until not long ago, a fire caused by a malfunctioning power cord completely destroyed my home. Luckily, me and all the animals (horses, dogs and cats) survived with no injuries, but I lost all my material things. As I had always desired to live closer to my horses anyway, I placed a mobile home right on the paddock to live in until the new house will be built. Monika: After this dramatic and existential experience, I can imagine the horses have become even more important to you. Tell us which horses you choose for your present breeding activities. Maya: The mare I started with was the lovely chestnut mare, Latifa by Teymur B x Nadira V, an Ibn Nejdy granddaughter who was bred by the late Sigi Manz in Germany. At the same time as her, I was able to acquire a beautiful Salaa El Dine son in Italy, and the first daughter

of the two was a filly named Rheemah al Jabal. Rheemah was the only filly I got out of Latifa before she died of a colic. Luckily, Rheemah turned into a beautiful fleabitten mare who is still with me and is continuing the legacy of her dam Latifa. Her get is in Switzerland, Germany, and Egypt and recently she has been awarded the label premium mare of our breeding society. Rheemah is the most motherly, loving mare that I could ever think of. She is incredibly special to me – she raised her own foal and adopted another one who had been rejected. intelligence, power, stamina, love, and dedication to humans and she is a great riding horse too. Rheemah has a pretty 2020 colt – Rasheek al Jabal – by the multiple champion stallion Hanine al Shahania (Al Adeed al Shaqab x Shomos al Nasser) and she is pregnant for a 2021 foal from the black pearl HAR Baarez (NK Ibn Leyl x HAR Basara – an Anaza El Farid great granddaughter). The almost four-year-old mare Jumanah al Jabal is a precious daughter of Rheemah al Jabal and my beloved stallion NK Abbas El Dins (see below). Two more almost four-years-old mares join the group of young mares at Al Jabal Arabians: Rayyanah al Jabal (Sharif Ibn Sheikh al Jabal x Layla Bint Ghazira al Jabal), and Masida Halima (Ansata Nile Pharao x Mabrouka Halima, a MaydanMadheen daughter). The true queen of Al Jabal, however, is the soon 24-year-old Fay Sabeena (Fay Sabun x Matala Bint Marah by Jamil), a Marah / EAO granddaughter and the last living Matala Bint Marah daughter. She is the most gentle and sweet mare and if she looks at you with her beautiful large black eye it feels like she was looking deep into your soul. With the addition of the black homozygous mare AR Yosreya (AR Shandiz x AR Sheykha Bint Maymoun) last year, I closed the gap to the beginnings of almost 30 years ago in an instant, as she is tracing back to exactly the same mare as Sher-Gall, my first ever straight Egyptian Horse. She will always stay here with me, as she is one of the few homozygous black Abayyans in Europe. Yosreya is now, in 2020, in foal from NK Abbas El Dine (NK Jamal El Dine x NK Asila), bred by Dr. Hans Nagel of Katharinenhof Stud. Abbas is very typey with a compact body, with lovely eyes, and I am proud of his heritage. He carries the El Din legacy and instils a lot of the famous “Nagel refinement” into my program. Monika: In your breeding, how important is type to you in relation to functionality? Maya: My aim is to breed refined horses with good, solid bodies. It is just my type, I guess. I like horses that I can ride. None of my horses are garden ornaments. Once my babies are sufficiently grown up, I have them trained to be great future riding horses until I find a wonderful 5-star-home for one or the other. Functionality is just as important as type in my opinion, and I don’t breed mainstream show horses. That doesn’t mean that my homebred horses can’t be shown – but I don’t like the so-called industry with mostly horses who look all the same. I love individuality, I love being a bit different. So I prefer to attend shows like the Noble Straight Egyptian Breeders Festival, which Mahmoud Anzarouti initiated 2017. That’s an event that brings together breeders, Arabian Horse lovers, and enthusiasts from all over the world to present their Straight Egyptian breeding programs. These presentations are held in a relaxed and joyful atmosphere, without judgement but with a lot of passion. Most breeders will even present their horses themselves… something you rarely find at mainstream shows nowadays because they are all in the hands of professionals - which is not always an advantage for the horses. This is why I am proud to be a member of the Honorary Board of the Noble Festival and Masida Halima, Maya’s precious Maydan-Madheen granddaughter www.tuttoarabi.com - TUTTO ARABI | 127

strongly support this kind of event. I hope that similar initiatives for horse presentation will soon emerge in other countries as well. We did our successful first step already, which may serve as a model for others. Monika: What about your new stallions on your farm? Maya: I have added two very exciting boys of the Saklawi strain to my stallion barn: With Nabiel Halim, by Sabeh al Salhia and out of Nile Halima (a PVA Kariim daughter), it’s not only that I have a future sire with an excellent pedigree in my stable – with Nabiel Halim, I have a potential sire who will transmit the strong bodies that I like so much in my breeding. The second future sire of Al Jabal Arabians is DF Nafis, a homozygeous tested solid black colt sired by DF Siraj and out of DF Nadeemah by Miad al Shaqab. I adore his small typey ears and his big dark eyes, certainly a trait which is often difficult to find within black SEs. On top of all that he is a great mover and I love to do ground work with this smart young fellow. Both of them represent my hopes and dreams for the future of my breeding program, and I am very excited to have some of their progeny at Al Jabal Arabians soon. Not just to be able to see their foals’ hopefully top-quality appearance, but mainly to eventually know for sure if they are the sires who can advance my breeding program. Monika: How to you plan to go on, living your life as a breeder up here in your alpine surroundings? Maya: I have always chosen to do things „my way“ – I have to finance my horses myself, so I take the liberty to decide what I want and how I Nabiel Halim, young Ansata Nile Echo grandson

Maya with her beloved stallion NK Abbas El Dine by NK Jamal El Dine

want it… no matter what other people might say. I am not using famous show stallions to breed with – I’m using the right ones for my mares and these may be “no name” stallions. Besides, I am convinced that embryo transfer on the massive

scale that it was done, did damage to Arabian horse breeding overall. I don’t use embryo transfer at all. I want foals to grow up with their Arabian dams, benefiting from their Arabian character and their way of educating their foals. We need to put effort into improving the quality of the breed, not the quantity. I am glad I’m self-sufficient and independent, meaning I can take my decisions based on what’s in my horses’ best interests. Like so many fellow breeders, I am strong, determined and passionate about what I believe in. And I have learned that even the smallest breeders, like myself, can be the backbone of the Arabian breed, especially during such difficult times as we are all going through right now. q

Nestled between the vineyards in South Africa’s well-known wine region, Elkasun Arabians paints a quaint picture on a balmy summer’s evening in the beautiful Cape Winelands. In 1996, Willie Brown started his breeding program where he also acts as Manager & Trainer. He has been a professional horseman for over 20 years, garnering 12 National Championship

titles during this period. In the early 2000’s, Elkasun Arabians imported their first mares from the United States, which laid the foundation for the successful breeding program we see today. Bloodlines like Marwan al Shaqab, Gazal al Shaqab, Versace, Besson Carol & Padrons Psyche were at the core of the Stud’s breeding program early on. It was only many years later that Willie decided to add something

new – after paying a visit to Marieta Salas from Ses Planes, Willie imported 3 horses from the picturesque island of Palma de Mallorca. A few years down the line, during a visit to Giacomo Capacci Arabians in Italy, Willie fell in love with an exquisite bloody-shouldered mare – heavily in foal at the time. Helwah AA (Al Ayad x Al Halah AA by Laheeb) gave birth to a grey filly by Laheeb shortly after. The filly had a rough start to life and spent the first few months in the clinic – but soon, mother & daughter made their way to sunny South Africa. It was also during this time that KZ Jewel of Malakat was acquired, a gorgeous daughter of the Champion Maker, WH Justice, out of a black SE dam KZ Malakat al Lail (KZ Alone x Lady of the Evening). Having a wonderful group of mares means nothing if you don’t have stallions to breed them to… Importing semen into South Africa has become increasingly difficult, the protocols and regulations make it near impossible. In 2015, Willie was invited to

judge the Abu-Dhabi National Championships. It was here where he saw IBN Farid – a 3-year-old colt at the time. Upon his return to South Africa, the negotiations started, and Dr. Ghanem Alhajri from Al Hawajer Stud graciously agreed to sell the young bay colt to Elkasun Arabians. Willie took a leap of faith by placing his trust in this young and unproven stallion. The following breeding season, all of the mares were covered with IBN Farid – the first one being maiden mare EKS Bint Helwah (Laheeb x Helwah AA by Al Ayad). On a cold and stormy night in June, after much anticipation, the first foal was born. A grey colt… Willie was on a flight to Bruges at the time, and upon his arrival was welcomed with the good news. An iPhone photo sent by Lisa put Willie at ease about his leap of faith. The colt was aptly named EKS Farajj – meaning comfort and a “happy outcome” in Arabic. Four years later, the Stud has retained 8 IBN Farid

daughters. One of which recently had her first foal by Straight Egyptian stallion, Shams al Din AA. In 2018 Lisa & Willie visited Israel and of course, no visit to Israel is complete without paying a visit to Chen & Eliko of Ariela Arabians. It was here that they were welcomed with warm hospitality, beautiful surroundings and exquisite horses. During their visit, Willie & Lisa hoped to discuss the possibility of a collaboration between Elkasun and Ariela, which could be the start of a longstanding business relationship. High-quality Straight Egyptian stallions are few and far between, but when we looked at Shams al Din AA, we could see his potential even as a still-maturing 3-year-old. Shams al Din AA is a son of Shams Sharav AA (Simeon Sharav x Saniyyah RCA), out of a Laheeb daughter tracing back to Botswana on her damline. After some discussion, Chen & Eliko agreed to have the young Shams al Din AA come to South Africa on lease for two years.

134 | TUTTO ARABI - www.tuttoarabi.com

This was exactly what Willie felt was necessary in his breeding program at the time, bearing in mind that the cross between RFI Farid and Egyptian had proven very successful. With broodmares from Spanish, Polish and Egyptian descent, Shams al Din AA promised to be a good match. Backtrack to 2015 again, around the same time as Abu-Dhabi Nationals, Willie was told about a striking yearling colt – already snow-white. Since he was on the lookout for a future stud, Willie was curious about this colt and asked to know more. He was a son of SMA Magic One, out of one of the most beautiful WH Justice daughters of our time – FM Gloriaa. Unfortunately, at that point in time it was not ‘meant to be’ – unbeknownst at the time that their paths were to cross again in future… IBN Farid was sold to the United States after 3 years in South Africa, and so Willie was on the lookout once again.

Willie Brown You own and run one of the most important farms in the world – can you tell our Readers your biggest success and biggest delusion? My biggest success would have to be breeding two World Champions, with 3 World Champion titles between them to date. Our farm is relatively small, we only have around 12 foals each year, so I feel honoured to have produced two stallions like EKS Alihandro & EKS Farajj. I think my biggest delusion would be underestimating the amount of luck that is required for breeding. Together with research and an understanding of what breeding entails, you need a lot of luck on your side! What are some of your breeding secrets? I try to find stallions that compliment my mares, and not only run after big names and show titles. I always say that the best show stallion is not necessarily the best fit for your mare. I have always had this idea to breed with younger generation stallions, that are often overlooked as most people only focus on breeding to the “famous” stallions. The fact that importing frozen semen to South Africa is very difficult, is both a blessing and a curse; we do not have “easy access” to all the stallions. This forces us to innovate and be a bit more creative with our breeding decisions.

148 | TUTTO ARABI - www.tuttoarabi.com

In your breeding program, are you focused on breeding immediately show horses or on breeding mares with genetic power for future generations? Breeding is a long-term commitment; therefore, I aim to strengthen the genetic pool of my broodmares in each future generation. You have already reached arguably the highest achievement by producing two World Champions, what is your next goal? To try and breed the next one… My goal is to uphold the standard of EKS-horses on a global level, and to build on the successes we have already had. Name three stallions and three mares you would like to have bred, and why? Pianissima, Emandoria and Noft al Nayfat. For me, these mares each represent classic Arabian type in their own way. Padrons Psyche, Marwan al Shaqab & Shanghai EA. A diverse selection, but each of them represents something that I like in the Arabian horse. Each of them of course, also contributed to the breed in a huge way. Name 5 of your favourite breeding lines? If I only look at my own breeding program and what has worked for me, I will have to say WH Justice, Gazal al Shaqab, Padrons Psyche, Laheeb & Ali Jamaal.

Bisharat al Dawla (RHR Heir of Marwan x ASE Bisiriya Hlayyil)

The breeding program of Arabian Stud Europe is based on three foundation mares. Manilah (Radamess II x Marischka), Dakaree (Dakar el Jamaal x Ultimate Fancy), who is now owned by Al Shaqab Stud and the lovely Haras Meia Lua bred Geraldyne el Jamaal (Ali Jamaal x Gai Natascha). The farm is based in The Netherlands and founded and still managed by Talitha Bakker, assisted by her partner Louis Vulker. The goal of Arabian Stud Europe is to breed beautiful Arabians who stand out in the show ring, are cherished for their impeccable pedigrees, loved for their abilities as breeding horses and who stand their ground at sport events. Being both beautiful and functional. One of the most important mares of the farm, sadly passed away last year. The impeccable ASE Bisiriya Hlayyil. A mare, famous for her extreme type, exotic head, big eyes and incredible production as a broodmare but also for her fantastic results in endurance. Together with endurance rider Imke Lamsma, Bisiriya successfully finished several endurance races and was qualified to participate at the highest level endurance, CEI 3* of 160km! Besides her great performance as a sport horse, Bisiriya was also awarded with the Elite certificate from the Dutch Arabian Horse society for her fantastic results as a broodmare. Bisiriya has had only champion offspring that was loved all around the globe.

At Arabian Stud Europe, there are still two daughters left and one still due in March 2021. These two daughters are ASE Kamiliya Hlayyil by Kahil al Shaqab and Bisharat al Dawla by RHR Heir of Marwan. Kamiliya was successful shown as a youngster and will be bred to El Jahez WH for a 2022 foal while Bisharat is still young and will turn 2 this year. Another daughter of Bisiriya is still owned by Diaa Karaali, who is a dear friend of Talitha and who is the owner of Al Dawla Arabians. This daughter is the special Adalat al Dawla by WH Justice, who is currently in show training with Elba training Center for the upcoming season. Arabian Stud Europe also stands two sons of Bisiriya at stud. The 6 years old ASE Magnificent (by ZT Magnanimus) who is starting his endurance career this year in the capable hands of Anne Wegner from Germany. Magnificent is also a very good sire and his first foals look very promising! The other stallion is the 5 years old ASE Juilliard, who is making a big name for himself within the Arabian Horse community, one foal at the time.

ASE Juilliette (ASE Juilliard x ASE Sayuri) sold to Israel

ASE Juilliard (Da Vinci FM x ASE Bisiriya Hlayyil)

ASE Juilliard was born in 2016 and is a son of Da Vinci FM by Versace. From the moment he was born, he stood out by his extreme type and ultra exotic type with huge friendly eyes and showy movement. As a younger he won the Silver medal at the International B-show, Tulip Cup in Holland. Besides his incredible head, Juilliard also has size, strong correct legs and hoofs and a strong body. And in addition to having a famous father, Juilliard also comes out of a double blessed mare, being both a show mare and a top level CEI 3* endurance mare. This attracted breeders from both the show world and the endurance world to send their mares to him for his first breeding season. At the age of two, Juilliard already served mares all over Europe. By the age of three, 190 | TUTTO ARABI - www.tuttoarabi.com

Juilliard already sired a bronze medal champion foal and a National reserve champion filly! Slowly breeders where noticing that ASE Juilliard was working magic on all types of mares. Breeding show type fillies with plain endurance mares and still keeping the foals in balance and showy, full of snort and blow and to still retain that calm and friendly character which makes them a great companion as well. Juilliard foals were becoming popular and with the first two daughters being sold to Israel, the interest in Juilliard is growing by the day. Also this year, Juilliard will stand at stud for a limited number of mares before he will go to Elba training center to be prepared for his show debut as a senior stallion.

ASE Falaree (Fadi al Shaqab x Dakaree)

Falaree is a successful sport horse in dressage, jumping and endurance

When the mare Dakaree was sold to Al Shaqab stud in Qatar, Talitha retained her last filly, ASE Falaree by Fadi al Shaqab, for her future breeding program. ASE Falaree will turn eight this year and has not only turned out to be a great brood mare, she also doing very well as a sport horse. In 2019, ASE Falaree gave birth to her first foal, a beautiful grey filly named ASE Faiana by the farms junior stallion ASE Magnificent. After weaning, Falaree was brought back in condition and won the 40km endurance in Ankum, Germany. She continued this success by winning the 53km in Leende, The Netherlands in 2020. Due to Covidrestrictions, she was not able to continue much in endurance and in January this year, she gave birth to a very pretty filly named ASE Falicia. Sire of this filly is multi champion ASE Farhan (RFI Farid x ASE Bisiriya Hlayyil) who was sold to Ultimate Stud in Switzerland in 2020.

ASE Faiana (ASE Magnificent x ASE Falaree) sold to Belgium

The plan for Falaree is to build out her endurance career and compete internationally in 2022. Along with competing in dressage and cross country, which she also loves to do! For now, her daughters ASE Faiana and ASE Falicia will continue her line in the Arabian Stud Europe breeding program.

ASE Zad Shiraz (Shiraz de Lafon x Glamour Girl J)

In 2015 we had the opportunity to get involved with the breeding program of Christine Jamar when an embryo right of Glamour Girl J was used with the young exciting stallion Shiraz de Lafon. This resulted in the flashy colt ASE Zad Shiraz. A grey colt, full of type with mind-blowing movement. A gift he inherited from his Polish grandmother Georgia and which he is passing on to all his offspring as well. ASE Zad Shiraz, who goes by the name of Shiraz, has grown up to be a beautiful stallion. In 2019 he was named Gold medal champion at the show in Bunschoten and was also named 2019 National reserve champion colt, behind his stable mate ASE Farhan. In 2020 he was not shown due to the Covid restrictions but will hopefully make a comeback in 2021. In January this year, ASE Zad Shiraz was also approved with the Dutch studbook for Sport horses (NRPS). From all the Arabians that participated, he was the only one to get approved and was praised for his jumping techniques. Shiraz is also ridden under saddle in dressage and in endurance he shows very low heartrates and very fast recovery times. A true versatile Arabian. In 2020, the first foal crop of Shiraz was born. One of them was a beautiful colt out of ASE Konooz (Hariry al Shaqab) named ASE Hafez el Shiraz. This colt was shown at the International B show in Ströhen, Germany where he got through to the final overall foal championships, where he got one vote for Gold and ended up with the Overall Bronze medal, charming everyone with his fantastic movement. Hafez is now sold to Morocco. 192 | TUTTO ARABI - www.tuttoarabi.com

ASE Aaliyah Hlayyil (Hlayyil Ramadan x Manilah) bred to El Jahez WH for 2022

ASE Mayana (ASE Marajó x Geisha P) with Talitha and her partner Louis

Most famous stallion of Arabian Stud Europe is probably still the big black stallion Jazzmeen. A son of World champion Essteem (Fame VF) and out of Jasmyne (Nyhl el Jamaal). Jazzmeen has gained thousands of fans around the world with his versatility as an Arabian, doing both dressage and

cross country, but most by his amazing character. Kids all over the world come to visit him on a yearly bases and he loves to be hugged and brushed by them. Geraldyne el Jamaal (Ali Jamaal x Gai Natascha)

Geraldyne is also a very successful endurance horse. Together with Talitha Bakker they are participating at competitions between 80 and 120km.

One of the Queens of Arabian Stud Europe is 19 years old Geraldyne el Jamaal. Bred in Brazil by Lenita Perroy of Haras Meia Lua, Geraldyne was exported to The Netherlands in 2016 at the age of 14. Here Geraldyne started a whole new chapter of her life. She was introduced to the saddle at the age of 15 and started to do some endurance races. She showed a lot of talent and is currently competing in endurance races over 80+ km! Showing a great attitude to run and low heartrates with quick recoveries. Of course Geraldyne her main focus stays in the breeding barn. Being one of the youngest direct daughters of Ali Jamaal in the world, Geraldyne also comes out of a fantastic damline! Her dam, Gai Natascha was bred by the Gainey family in the United States and is a daughter of the great Bey Shah and the beautiful Gainey-bred mare Gai-

Radiance, who is the full sister to the famous Gai Radiant. While with Arabian Stud Europe in the Netherlands, Geraldyne has produced some extraordinary offspring! Geraldyne is a true filly-producer. While it might be the stallions influence, Geraldyne always knows how to flip the balance by giving one filly after the next. First filly to be born in The Netherlands was the beautiful, big moving, dark bay ASE Gabriella al Gazal by Gazal al Shaqab, followed by ASE Genevieve el Marc by QR Marc. Both of these fillies are still owned by Arabian Stud Europe today. After these two fillies, Geraldyne was leased to Al Jood Stud of Qatar for whom she produced again two fillies. The lovely Qamar al Jood (by Qaysar al Jood) and the flashy Alicia al Jood (by Alixir), the last one to be resold to Morocco earlier this year.

STUD In the last years, Geraldyne has proven to be a consistent producer of Black foals. In 2019 Geraldyne surprised everyone by giving birth to a Black colt by WH Justice. This colt, ASE Justice el Jamaal, got the attention of many, as he was not only Black but also very beautiful and refined. He was sold to Al Dawla Arabians from Australia as a yearling and is currently standing at stud with Elba Training center in Belgium. The expectations are high! Early 2021, Geraldyne had a unbelievable pretty filly, born by embryo transfer, sired by Magic Magnifique. This filly, named Guinevere PKA, was bred and owned by Peka Arabians, who purchased the embryo right of Geraldyne the year before. Guinevere is the perfect cross of her parents. The extreme face of Magic Magnifique, the big eyes of Geraldyne el Jamaal as well as her long neck, her body and her beautiful movement. We are looking forward to see her in the show ring this season!

For 2021, two more foals of Geraldyne are expected to be born. One sired by the great sire ASE Juilliard and one sired by D Angelo. The last one will be bred and owned by Elizar Arabians, who purchased this embryo right of Geraldyne. For 2022, the breeding plans already taking place. So has Geraldyne be bred to the young exciting stallion AJ Yas (by Vervaldee) for a 2022 foal. There is also still one embryo right for sale for the upcoming season. Geraldyne has been a true gift to Arabian Stud Europe and it will be excited to see what the future will bring! q

BAHRAIN 7TH BREEDERS SHOW 1ST STRAIGHT EGYPTIAN SHOW

The beautiful Kingdom of Bahrain is a relatively new land when it comes to Arabian horse breeding and showing. However, the ambitious and determined breeders of the smallest Gulf State are doing their best to catch up with other Middle Eastern countries, like Qatar, United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia. In fact, all the hard work they do already pays off and brings great results in both breeding barns and show rings. Not only can the Bahraini breeders boast about some widely-recognised Arabian horse studs, but also they can take pride in making every effort to present the outcomes of their breeding programme to the world. It was an immense pleasure for me as a representative of Tutto Arabi Magazine to take part in the 7th Bahrain Breeders Show and 1st Bahrain Straight Egyptian Show that were held in the beautiful scenery of Jazaer Beach between 28th and 30th January 2021.

Skilfully organized by Bahrain Royal Equestrian and Endurance Federation, the two ECAHOaffiliated shows were held under the patronage of His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa, the King of Bahrain and His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, the Crown Prince and Prime Minister of the Kingdom. The difficult task of evaluating 153 participants was undertaken by five experienced judges: Mr Cristian Moschini from Italy, Mr Tony Van Der Auwera from Belgium, Mr Eric Gear from France, Mr Medhat Gaber and Mr Mohamed Badrawy, both from Egypt. The disciplinary committee consisting of Dr Mohammed Mohsen from Egypt, Dr Mohammed Salah and Mr Abbas Al Jabal, both from Bahrain, were responsible for the wellbeing of all the contenders, while two ringmasters, Ms Irena Cieslak from Poland and Mr Ali Jameel from Bahrain, ensured the smooth running of the event.

SHOWS AND EVENTS

THE 7TH BAHRAIN BREEDERS SHOW 28-29TH JANUARY 2021

The show started at 10 a.m. with two classes of yearling fillies, ten contenders each. The first place in class 1A was awarded to an exotic bay Naseem Al Rashediah daughter, TFK Ghalia (out of Godiva CF by Psyche’s Legacy), who just a few weeks before became Bahrain National Gold Champion Yearling Filly. With a high score of 91.38 points, Ghalia outdistanced her competitors: the grey Mayar Al Manama (Saadoun Alzobair x D Kaseeba by QR Marc), the dark bay BFS Shomookh (Forelock’s Shaheen x Valeria F by Valerio Ibn Eternity) and the bay SR Rawda (D Fayez x Haneen Al Khawaled by El Fejr). Class 1B was conquered by another fine daughter of Naseem Al Rashediah, the gorgeous grey Joury Al Zain (out of Alanood Al Zain by Ameer Al Shakhoura). One of the judges showed his appreciation for her refined type and well-proportioned head and neck by awarding her with the first two 20s of the show. With the same total score as the winner of the previous class, Joury Al Zain qualified for the championships, leaving the competition far behind. The first class of 2-year-old fillies was an unquestionable triumph of the highly trotting bay Reem Almaha (Naseem Al Rashediah x Ameera Almaha by Soker). Her amazing score of 91.75 points and the fact that Naseem’s progeny won the first three classes of fillies that morning, highlights the value of this young Straight Egyptian stallion as a sire. The class winner was followed by another bay beauty, Reem Al Jabriyeh, sired by the reining Bahrain National Gold Champion Stallion Qotob Al Shaqab and out of a D Fayez daughter, Bedayat Al Jabiyeh. The third place in the class went to a typey grey Ora Haala (S.M.A. Magic One x Magnum’s Fortune K.A. by QR Marc). The following class belonged to the bay 2-year-old daughter of another world-famous sire, RFI Farid. The exciting presentation of the harmoniously built AA Victoria (out of Miss Valentina PPA by DA Valentino) resulted in a score of 91.13 points and her leading position in the class. A strong competition in the first section of the 3-year-old fillies ended with the victory of the exotic bay Ghurrah (D Fayez x Tallaht Al Bashayer by Hattim Al Nasser), closely followed by a refined bay

daughter of Qotob Al Shaqab, Reem Al Nawader (out of Zsuzette by Psytadel). Qotob had also sired the winner of class 3B, the exquisite bay Jawhara Al Jabriyeh (out of Yewel F by SA Movin Star), who’s presentation concluded with a 20 for movement and the overall score of 91.38 points. The senior female classes were definitely not as crowded as the junior ones. From among ten mares competing in the 4-6-year-old section, the judges chose the well-built grey A.Y. Shereen (Boustane Bouznika x Eustomia by Poganin) as the class winner. The second place belonged to Alanood Al Zain (Ameer Al Shakhoura x RC Jameelah by Laheeb Al Nasser), who also happens to be the dam of Joury Al Zain, the outstanding yearling filly that took her class by storm a few hours before. Another mare that qualified for the championships was the grey 4-year-old Aali Shaikha (Tabaque x RRA Marriana by Marajj). With only three entries in the 7-year-old and older mares’ class, Kamila Al Rashediah (Rashdan Al Rashediah x Kareymah Ezzain by NK Hafid Jamil) had very little competition. Being blessed with aristocratic presence and feminine beauty, this 10-year-old grey mare received an overall score of 91.13 points, which took her straight to the championships. The results of the Yearling Fillies Championship, which was held late afternoon that day, did not really reflect the placement in the classes and the judges were far from being unanimous in choosing the three medallists. The final comparison of eight yearling fillies resulted in the victory of the refined Joury Al Zain, the pride and joy of her current owner, Dr Bashar Mustafa Jaafar Alsayed. With only 2 points difference in the final score of the gold and silver medallists, the second place and the title of Silver Champion Yearling Filly went to Mayar Al Manama. Only a few weeks after becoming Bahrain National Bronze Champion, this lovely yearling filly made her breeder and owner, Mr Saeed Jaffar Abdulla Mohamed Almaheshi, even more proud by going one step further and winning a silver medal. Quite the contrary, the reigning Bahrain

SHOWS AND EVENTS

National Gold Champion Yearling Filly, TFK Ghalia, proudly bred and owned by TFK Stud, was awarded ‘only’ the bronze medal at this occasion. Again, the difference in the final scores of silver and bronze champions was 3 points only, so it could have gone either way.

General Al Manama (E.S. Harir x Sanaa Al Muawd) was the winner of the second yearling colts’ section, but the elegant dark bay Shamekh Al Muharraq (Drea Al Shaqab x Kunooz Jumanah) nipped at his heels as the difference between their scores was as little as 0.25 points.

In the Junior Fillies Championship, the judges made a more unified decision while electing the gold medallist, though they were still quite far from being unanimous. After an exhilarating presentation in the championships, the elegant bay AA Victoria took her rightful place at the top of the podium. This classy and correct 2-year-old daughter of RFI Farid was bred by Aali Arabians and is now owned by Mr Ali Abdulla Ali Alaali. Second place on the podium was taken by the refined bay daughter of Naseem Al Rashediah, Reem Almaha, bred by Almaha Stable and owned by Mr Osama Abdulla Ahmed Al Haram. The battle for a Bronze Champion title was a tie, with three fillies having exactly the same score. However, the tie was resolved by comparing the class scores, which made Jawhara Al Jabriyeh together with her breeder Al Jabriyeh Stud and her owner Sh. Mohamed Ali Sabah Al Sabah the lucky winners.

A maternal half-brother to the Silver Champion Yearling Filly, the typey grey 2-year-old Sarab Al Manama (Aali Farid x D Kaseeba by QR Marc) took the lead in class 7A. His dam, the feminine grey QR Marc daughter D Kaseeba is not only the reigning Bahrain National Gold Champion Mare but also a prolific producer for her owner, Mr Saeed Jaffar Abdulla Mohamed Almaheshi. The top place in the second section of 2-year-old colts belonged to the beautiful bay AMS Alfahad (Avalon LBA x Forelock’s Jawaher by Makisa Adaggio). During the award ceremony, Alfahad was joined by the beautifully trotting grey RFI Farid son, Farid Al Layal, a maternal half-brother to Ezz Al Layal, who won one of the yearling sections earlier that morning.

Senior Mares Championship did not bring any major surprises. The winner of class 5, the noble grey Kamila Al Rashediah, bred by the world-renowned Al Rashediah Stud and owned by Mr Ali Abdali Ali Ahmed Fakharawi, was honoured with the Gold Champion Senior Mare title. She was joined on the podium by the Silver Champion A.Y. Shereen, bred by A.Y. Arabian Stud and owned by Mr Abdulla Yousif Ahmed Mohammed. With only one point less than the Silver Champion, Aali Shaikha, bred by Aali Stud and owned by Mr Ali Abdulla Ali Alaali, was awarded the bronze medal. The second day of the show was all about the handsome boys! Each of the two classes of yearling colts featured eight horses. Class 6A belonged to the refined grey Ezz Al Layal (Aali Farid x Zaafarana Al Shaqab by Marwan Al Shaqab), who enchanted the judges with his animated trot, surely inherited from his powerfully moving sire. Two other colts in this class that qualified for the championships were the bay Fadi Al Shaqab son, PS Bin Fadi (out of TF Magic Kamilah by FS Bengali), and the grey Bahraini Al Mohanna (D Mahboob x Pandora Al Mohanna by Muhanad Al Bidayer). The charismatic chestnut

The class of 3-year-old colts was a decisive victory of the charismatic snow-white AT Al Borak. His refined type and amazing attitude must surely be the influence of both his unforgettable sire Shanghai EA and his magnificent maternal grandsire Al Ayal AA. Being a successful blend of such esteemed bloodlines, Al Borak distanced himself from his competitors with his remarkable overall score of 91.50 points. The beautifully trotting bay Saher Aldamestani (Zothar x Shahnaz Aldamestani by Tabaque) finished the competition on the second position with a total score of 90.00 points. Similarly to the female classes held on the previous day, the senior stallions were rather thin on the ground. The first contender to be presented in class 9, the elegant bay trotting machine SR Saif (Forelock’s Alfahad x A.F. Kamilah by A.F. Cupido) with an overall score of 91.38 stayed ahead of the competitors until the end of the class. Another excellent mover, the grey 6-year-old Zaeem Al Jabriyeh (Mountassar Al Zobair x Yewel F by SA Movin Star), who is also a maternal half-brother to the winner of class 3B, came second. The last qualifying class of the day for the most mature males featured only three contestants. However, with quality being far more important than quantity, it is worth noting that all the participating stallions received total marks above 90 points. The first place in the class with

the overall score of 91.25 points was taken by another marvellous mover, the grey 7-year-old Aali Sultan (Tabaque x RRA Marriana by Marajj), who was also the only male contender fortunate enough to receive a 20 on that day. In the Yearling Colts Championship, the judges were almost unanimous when choosing the gold medallist. The correct and classy chestnut General Al Manama, bred and owned by Mr Saeed and Mr Husain Jaffar Abdulla Mohamed Almaheshi, was elected by four out of five judges to win the laurels of a Gold Champion. Second place on the podium was occupied by the winner of the first yearling colts’ class, Ezz Al Layal, bred by Al Layal Stud and owned by Mr Mohsen Ali Abdulla Husain. The situation was reversed as compared to the Bahraini Nationals, where Ezz Al Layal won a gold medal, with General Al Manama being awarded the silver one. The third place and the Bronze Champion title went to Bahraini Al Mohanna, which must have greatly added to the happiness of his proud breeder and owner, Al Mohanna Stud. It was hardly surprising that the exquisite Shanghai

EA son, AT Al Borak, bred by Atyab Stud and owned by Mr Mahmood Maki Salman Ebrahim Albahraini, was chosen almost unanimously by the judges to become Gold Champion Junior Colt. Al Borak was joined on the podium by the Silver Champion, AMS Alfahad, bred and owned by Al Mudhahka Stud, accompanied by the bronze medallist, the reigning Bahrain National Silver Champion Junior Colt, Farid Al Layal, bred by Al Layal Stud and owned by Mr Mohsen Ali Abdulla Husain. As might have been expected, the winner of the last qualifying male class, the 7-year-old grey Aali Sultan, bred by Aali Stud and owned by Mr Sayed Faisal Hasan Kadhem Hashim Ali, was crowned the Gold Champion Senior Stallion. Although the placement in the class could suggest otherwise, Zaeem Al Jabriyeh, bred by Al Jabriyeh Stud and owned by Mr Jaber Saeed Ali Kambash, became Silver Champion, while SR Saif, who won in the qualifying class with Zaeem, was awarded the bronze medal. No doubt his breeder Alrowaiei Stable as well as his owner Mr Salman Hamad Yusuf Ahmed Abdulla Alrowaie were both happy and proud of their handsome boy.

1ST BAHRAIN STRAIGHT EGYPTIAN SHOW 30TH JANUARY 2021

After the two exciting days of the Breeders Show, there came a time for the Straight Egyptian horses to shine in the show ring. It was a great shame that one of the biggest contenders, the world-famous Al Rashediah Stud, had to withdraw as many as eighteen horses due to the serious injury of their handler. Although there were only 33 participants across all the qualifying classes, there are surely some names that need to be mentioned. With only five yearling fillies competing in the show, the qualifying class 1 became a Yearling Fillies Championship at the same time. The astonishing grey Joury Al Zain repeated her amazing accomplishment from the Breeders Show and, with the total score of 91.30 points, became Gold Champion Yearling Filly. The gold medal in the Junior Fillies Championship was unanimously awarded to the stunning grey daughter of Nadeer Al Rashediah, PS Eldana (out of Imhalima by Al Whaid El Dine), bred by Prime Arabian Horse Stud and owned by Mr Mustafa Isa Abdulla Almarkhi. Another unanimous gold medallist was chosen from among four elegant senior mares. It comes as no surprise that, with the spectacular score of 91.90 points and with 3x20 for type and 2x20 for head and neck, the feminine and refined 8-year-old grey Rayyana Al Shakhoura (Naif Al Rayyan x Falha Al Rayyan by Alidaar), bred by Shakhoura Farm and owned by Mr Mohammed Waheed Hasan Alaali, was eventually crowned as the unanimous Gold Champion Senior Mare. Quite the opposite, the final verdict in the Junior Colts Championship was far from being a joint decision of all the judges. With only a 2-point lead over his main rival, the exotic dark bay 2-year-old Ward Tamim (Nadeer Al Rashediah x LF Khasala by The

Verdict HG), bred by Tamim Arabian Stud and owned by Almanarah Stud, became Gold Champion Junior Colt. In the Senior Stallions Championship, the judges again voted unanimously in favour of the charismatic chestnut 5-year-old Naseeb Al Jabriyeh (Awal Al Zobair x Roudha Alriffa 1648 by Shahm Elkuwait), bred by Al Jabriyeh Stud and owned by Almanarah Stud. Naseeb’s exhilarating presentation in the class, which resulted in the highest score of the show - 92.10 points and a 20 for type, undoubtedly helped the judges in making their final decision. These three exciting days proved that the Arabian horse breeding in Bahrain is going in the right direction. The quality of horses has undoubtedly improved in the recent years and breeders have promising future ahead of them. The rapid enhancement is highlighted by the fact that younger generations tend to receive higher scores than more mature horses, which is quite the opposite in most shows, simply because Arabian horses mature slowly, often being at their best later in their lives. Additionally, many junior contenders are the offspring of horses presented in the senior classes, and if they score higher than their own sires and dams, it surely indicates a considerable progress in breeding. But instead of just reading about it, all Arabian horse enthusiast should visit this amazing place on earth at the next available opportunity to admire the bewitching beauty of Bahrain and its horses as well as to experience the kindness and hospitality of Bahraini people. To me, it has surely become a must-visit place on the map of the Arabian horse world.

WE, WOMEN by Giorgia Mauri

We, Women project is involving more and more women from all over the world. It is a great satisfaction to realise and then find confirmation of the fact that women want to tell their stories and bear witness to their experience for the benefit of future generations. So we are not stopping. We continue to collect contributions and trace the path. We can only suppose what the destination of this project will be. The goal is to hand over to future generations a testimony that will act as a guide, that will help them find their way. All women together can do this, can achieve this ambitious goal. Thanks to those who have participated and those who will participate for their valuable contribution to this great dream.

Breeder and Businesswoman

SPECIAL

My name is Kathleen Ohlsson, Im 37 years old and an Arabian horse breeder in Sweden.

A couple of years later, I imported my first two breeding mares.

I had my first Arabian horse when I was 13 years old and been stucked with the breed since that. My mother who I lived with, was not involved in horses at all, but she kindly built a tiny little stable with two boxes in our garden were I kept my Arabian horse and a pony.

Today, I run our stud farm together with my husband. We have around 15 horses, an approved EU stallion station and I’m educated in insemination, lab work and everything around. We ship semen and are selling horses all over the world. I love this work!

When I was 20 years old, I bought my first Arabian stallion and was working in a stud farm for Warmbloods. I learned a lot about breeding, insemination, foals and so on. It was at that time I decide I want to be a breeder and focus more on that part instead of riding.

I think, like in the rest of the world and in all business, theres both plus and minus to be a woman. I think it was harder when I was younger. You had to proove yourself more to other people and people sometimes had bad thought about you and above all, preconceived notions. If I was a young man with a rising stallion and a owned stud farm, I think people would had applauded me instead.

SPECIAL

My name is Ally Nelson, I reside in Scottsdale, Arizona and was born and raised in Southern California. I was not raised in a equestrian family, however, my parents always supported my dreams and ambitions, instilling a strong work ethic within me. As a small child my closest friend had Arabian horses and I was uncontrollably drawn to the barn. By age 11 my parents accepted that this was not a phase for me, they bought me my first show horse and I’ve never looked back. My entire childhood I competed with Arabian and Half Arabian performance horses, I also dabbled a bit in the halter. I attended college in Los Angeles with a focus on Animal Science and Marketing which has led me to the exact place I am now. I currently own Ally Nelson PR, a marketing firm that assists Arabian horse breeders all around the world with their annual marketing strategies. Along with ANPR I manage the farm Sahara Scottsdale, a herd of approximately 150 Arabian horses, many great stallions and on average 35 foals per year.

I’ve always approached the Arabian horse with great intrigue and respect! It is so important to not forget what brought us here, the horse! The titles and trophies only get you so far, the roots of passion for the Arabian horse carries one through all aspects of this wonderful industry! I have never been one to look at my ambitions or career in the sense of man vs woman. I know that if I apply myself and do the best job that I am capable of I will be successful. I feel the most important quality one must have for success is passion. If you are passionate about a specific project you & that project will shine! I also believe it is very important to stay humble, appreciating your successes but also not being afraid to ask for help when it is needed. I would love to think that we as women are paving the way for future generations. Together we are stronger and I will always be open to helping the next generation just as I have had mentors help me along the way.

To future generations of young women I would like to say:

Breeder and Film Producer

SPECIAL

My name is Mindy Peters. I am a third generation Arabian horse breeder. I am living in Santa Ynez, California USA. However, I was born and raised on a farm in Iowa next to my grandparents Arabian horse farm. I have been working in the film industry for over 20 years but my full time passion is working on my Arabian breeding program. I see the Arabian horse industry as a global family. For all of us who love Arabian horses we have a connection that is deep and mostly inspired by passion. Therefore, I believe we must honor and respect this mutual love that we share by listening and respecting each other’s ideas and philosophies. As we all have different visions and taste in what we like. Even though we follow breed standard it is important to honor each individuals vision and to help each other by sharing information and personal experiences with our horses. I believe there is always room to be seen and heard and to create opportunities to help elevate our breed. Women have a soul connection to these creatures much like a mother loves her child and family. There is tremendous power in that. We as women have the ability to have great effect and contribution because of this. I believe anything attached to love has great power. As with any endeavor in life there are always difficulties. I choose not to focus on difficulties I focus on solving problems. Most especially if you are trying to make a difference or create change and evolution. What does this mean to me? It

means that you must forge forward with these key elements; passion, curiosity and discipline. Most importantly find people with long term experience who you respect, who have been successful, and learn from them as much as you can. Along with the elements I mention in the previous answer I think it is vitally important to have an open mind to learn and continuously leveling up. Full commitment to your goals is also essential and maintaining your vision. However, one thing very important to me is to help each other to succeed. We must do this by being generous with our knowledge and sharing what we have learned with others so we can lift each other as we climb. I was fortunate to have so many wonderful mentors like My grandfather, Sheila Varian, Sigi Siller, Lenita Perroy, and My aunt, Shelley Hjelm. I enjoy helping new young Breeders and Arabian enthusiasts. This brings me great joy! I think my experience and history can be an inspiration for future generations of women. As much as I don’t focus on difficulties I have had many and I have worked through them. I have also had great successes and have a clear idea of how I reached those successes. Women are generally great listeners and will sometimes even work harder than men to reach their goals. There is great value in that. I also have many wonderful stories about Arabian horses and how they have been the ribbon that has interlaced my life together from a young girl on a farm to moving across the country to work for an Arabian horse breeder to Hollywood to traveling all around the world. It all started as a dream.

Hello, my name is Rosangela, Rosy to my friends, but I would have loved to be called Ginevra, I have never liked my name, I don’t find myself in it. I live in northern Italy, in a small town near Bergamo, and for a couple of years now I’ve been working with my fiancé in managing the stable. I approached the world of Arabian horses when I met Luca Oberti 15 years ago, at my first Arabian horse morphology show. To be honest, I was baffled. I didn’t understand... the method. As I got to know more, thanks to Luca, who is now my partner, I began to worship the beauty of this breed. I like to watch them dancing freely and happily in the paddocks. The mares in the group, wow, I love their haughtiness, as they seem to be challenging each other for the most attitude.... goosebumps. It wasn’t always like this, until recently it would have been unthinkable for me to physically approach them, I feared them, in fact I was terrified of them. I don’t presume to call myself a horsewoman. Those

who are have my admiration, I envy their courage, the free relationship they manage to establish with this splendid animal... But I am working on it, I will slowly eradicate this ancestral fear of mine, I promise. To tell the truth, the birth of my horse, (it would be Luca’s, but I like to think it’s mine) Invictus, born 6 years ago, has helped me a lot, I love him. I would also add thanks to Desire Faraone, “our” stable girl, a blessing and a curse who, despite her young age, manages to be very convincing with her very authoritative but necessary ways. In this ‘crazy world’, I initially had to face certain difficulties ... not as a woman/person, but because of my holistic approach to horses, an approach that has helped me and many people close to me for decades, so I said to myself ‘why not use it also for animals?’ It wasn’t easy to get people to understand its importance, but I can be extremely convincing and insistent, and by now, when there is a health problem in the stable, I put my own spin on it, calling in veterinarians who practice this discipline, which ranges from homeopathy, acupuncture, osteopathy and, to finish, I would mention the wonderful quantum medicine. I love seeing horses come back to perfect health and observing the regained serenity in their eyes.

I am convinced that what we think and what we say makes all the difference... “the word becomes flesh”... Arabian horses have changed my way of thinking and consequently changed my life path in love and work.

Videomaker

SPECIAL

My name is Elena Vignato, I live close to Venice and I’m a videomaker. I am a part of the Arabian Essence Team and through the years I’ve covered multiple roles inside the company, until I became production and video editing manager. This beautiful adventure in the world of the Arabian Horses began in 2015, at the Wels show to be precise. My father asked for my collaboration as a camera operator for the livestream of the show. I was immediately struck by the appearance of these horses, even though it took some time to deeply understand and appreciate all of the details that makes them so special. But I think if I have to identify the specific moment in which I did, definitely and hopelessly, fall in love with this breed, then we go back to the moment I met this italian filly - Nemesi Regalis. From the moment I saw her I got completely lost in the depth of her big black eyes. That’s when something inside of me clicked and I started visualizing videos, short films, mini series, tv ads with these magnificent animals as the leading role. I personally love to be a woman in the Arabian horse world. It is an environment very open and welcoming towards talented people, be they photographers, groomers, trainers or even helpers and supporters. I’ve met so many fantastic women who made their way into this business and are living their best lives surrounded by the love of these special animals. I can say in total honesty that I was very lucky, as both Marco Vignato (my father) and Elvis Giughera

have been supporting me and my projects since the beginning. I didn’t found any difficulties in proposing myself in this world. Arabian Essence has always been a benchmark for art related to Arabian horses, and perhaps the biggest difficulty I face is living up to the company name. It wasn’t an easy path, to capture the beauty and the uniqueness of an Arabian Horse in a video is always challenging. I want to thank once again Elvis and Johanna Ullstrom, for helping me understand the details in these animals, allowing me to show them to the world through my videos. I think the base of a successful project as a video maker/photographer/graphic designer in this particular business is represented by the ability to see through the eyes of the breeder. Many professionals have been in and out of this business in no time because they were not able to understand the subject they were filming to the fullest. It is safe to say my experience as a Maine Coon breeder for over 15 years has helped me a lot in getting the right approach to comprehend the morphology of the Arabian Horse and what a breeder actually wants and needs to see. I hope my experience and history can be an inspiration for a future generation of women in this world. I hope there will be other women who will decide to put themselves into this field. I believe, for those who are talented and work honestly, this would be a beautiful challenge.

My family and I, Zico Guardia and my daughter Fernanda, live of Arabian horses. I met my first Arabian horse 30 years ago with my father Claudio Durante and we started breeding. I have been on the board of the Arabian Horse (ABCCA) for over 10 years with ABCCA woman and kids; today my position is director of promotion, responsible for the Arab horse television program. I have been an amateur handler, I am a judge at ABCCA and I live every day with Arabian horses

and my family. I love horses and I love Arabian horse! The horse gives the woman a sense of companionship, friendship and also makes her understand the limits. But affection is a necessary ingredient at any stage, and animals immediately correspond to what they receive. Women who can be with a horse to look after should do so because it is therapy. The biggest difficulty is managing time with other activities as a mother, wife, with my profession as a nutritionist that don’t allow me to have more time with the horses, but as much as I can I am in contact with them.

My name is Talitha Bakker and I am an Arabian Horse breeder from The Netherlands. Besides breeding them, I also compete with them in halter competitions and endurance riding.

the Arabian horse, I came to respect and enjoy their culture as it is part of the Arabian horse. When all share the same love and passion for a horse, then you feel all equal.

The world of the Arabian horse is incredible. The Arabian horse has this amazing ability to connect people, making us feel we are all part of this big Arabian horse family. Sharing that one great passion, the love for the Arabian horse. It doesn’t matter where you come from, which language you speak or what your religion is, when it comes to the Arabian horse, we all speak the same language and the passion is shared.

In any business, you need to have a vision in mind. Along your journey towards this vision, you learn to adapt and perfect this vision, making the journey towards it maybe even more valuable than the goal itself.

Personally I do not feel much different in being a woman in the Arabian horse world. I feel that I am respected as much as the male breeders do. For a long time it was not allowed for us woman to participate in endurance races in Saudi Arabia, but recently this was also changed which makes this country open to us woman as well. I do not find any difficulties or obstacles. I have dealt with the Arabic culture while growing up with

Determination, the quality to adjust and the will to learn are all key factors in order to achieve your ultimate goal. The new generation often is used to get what they want. In this world, everything is accessible to them, while we, in the pre-internet years, really had to work hard to achieve something. I think that the new generation of woman needs to understand that you only get to where you want to be by working hard, being willing to learn from others and to keep believing in your dream, despite what others say.

My first approach to Arabian horses was thanks to my brothers who had a passion for Arabian saddle horses. Even though I grew up among them, my fear for this “particular” animal was always present. In 2012 I visited Roberto Zaniboni’s training centre and there I decided to buy my first Arabian mare together with my family. Thanks to her and to Roberto’s teachings I began to feel that a real passion for the world of morphology was growing inside me. From then on, together with the team of the centre, my presence at the shows was constant. In 2015 someone noticed that I probably knew how to do something in my own small way. So in the summer Luca Oberti called me and asked me if I could join his team for a few months. Five years have already passed since that day. These years have given me real professional growth. Today, I cannot say that I am completely familiar with everything that concerns the world of the Arabian horse, but I try at every opportunity I am given to learn as much as possible and then put it into practice. Very often people believe that the figure of a woman in a training centre is necessary to give the horse that extra peace of mind and attention to detail. I see it a bit like a mother to a child.

From the moment I joined this world I was lucky. I was helped to learn the basic concepts and to put them into practice without any pressure. When I arrived at Luca’s I was welcomed like a daughter by both him and Rosangela and this gave me even more ways and a desire to want to learn and enrich my passion. I was given the opportunity to work with horses of a certain level, together we achieved great results and thanks to Luca I was able to gain experience outside Italy that I would never have expected to have. To undertake any role in the world of Arabian horses you must certainly have a lot of determination, a great desire to do, to learn, and not be in a hurry to immediately aim for the best you can give or do. Certainly many of those who do my job from the start aim to become a great trainer and handler. But for me it’s not the same thing. I prefer to stay “behind the scenes” and with every victory I bring home, to be satisfied with what I have done, to see the results of horses that I devote my time to every day, but also to see the joy of their owners and the gratitude they show you for what you do for their horses. It is also true that the minority of women working in this field is remarkable. This makes me a little pensive because I think that many see this passion as something that does not bring a future. But I can assure you that this is not true.
