Koenraad Detailleur is a well-known international judge from Belgium. In the past he also organized some successful shows in Belgium and besides all this he is also a very good breeder.
TA: Could you give us a small introduction on yourself, your lifestyle and family? KD: I’m a designer/ interior architect, so I have a real passion for beauty. I love cooking as well, which is another passion we share with the family. Since my childhood I’ve been passionated by horses and I was riding a lot in my youth. the ‘Arabica Show’ in Vlimmeren at Mr Joseph Peeters’s property, organized by himself. In that time it was a competition between Belgium and Holland. I’m very lucky that my family loves the Arabian horses as well. My three daughters Louise, Marie and Esther and my wife Katrien, are all involved with the horses at home and we all share the same passion for the Arabian breed. TA: How did you start with Arabian Horses and did this influence your current breeding program? KD: I was once on a wedding, sitting at the same table with a man who owned Arabian horses. He was talking about them and invited me the day afterwards to go riding with his Arabian horses on the beach and dunes. It impressed me so much that a couple of weeks later I bought my first Arabian, a Crabbet colt. I had a lot of fun with him. 26 | TUTTO ARABI - www.tuttoarabi.com

Later on I started to visit many shows in Belgium and abroad. The first horses that had a big impact on me, were from the Plakat bloodlines, in those years the leading stallion in Europe. The crosses with Plakat and Ibn Estasha were extraordinary in that time. In my breeding program I love to cross Straight Egyptian bloodlines with mixed bloodlines.

KOENRAAD DETAILLEUR TA: What is your ideal image of the Arabian Horse? KD: I still love the classic Arabian type, horses that are nice in harmony, big black eyes, big nostrils, small ears, thin skin, good tail carriage and some dryness. Another important factor of a good Arabian horse is of course nice movement. TA: What goal do you want to achieve with your breeding program? KD: One day I would like to participate in Paris with one of my homebred horses and get the ribbon.

KOENRAAD DETAILLEUR TA: How many mares do you own and which foals are you expecting this year? KD: I have five nice broodmares all homebred. Magnolia Apal (El Amin x SA Natsarah) is my foundation mare. This is a female line that created many champions around the world, all related to the most famous mare Saskia. This season we expect 3 foals: Magnolia Apal x EKS Farajj; Amaluna, a daughter of Magnolia Apal with Kais Albaydaa is expecting her first foal by EKS Farajj and Magilla Apal, which is also a daughter of Magnolia Apal with MCA Magnum Gold is in foal to El Ray Magnum. For next year we already bred Emilia Apal (Redwood Lodge Artique x Bk Estera by Esparto) with Emerald J and we’re planning to breed Meia Luna (Eden C x 28 | TUTTO ARABI - www.tuttoarabi.com
Magilla Apal) with Fa El Rasheem. We’re really looking forward to see our next generation of horses, the foaling season is always a very exciting period for us. TA: As a breeder and judge, you frequently travel the world. Are there any new young stallions who you think can have an impact on todays breeding that are still quite unknown? KD: Many times I see some offspring of not so popular stallions, who in fact

are wonderful producers, but not they are not in the spotlights on the show scene, to mention some names: Muranas Jassehr, Kanz Al Nasser, even a horse like IM Bayard Cathare is interesting to reset some horses in body and leg structure. It’s not the World Champions who are producing the next Champions, but the correct build horses with a certain consistency in the pedigree. A new colt who took my attention, is the young colt of Christine Jamar, Muranas Nader he is in my opinion a very promising young colt. TA: Which bloodlines have your preference? KD: There are many nice bloodlines, but I use more and more Egyptian or related stallions. It is very important to keep the characteristics of the Arabian horse in the breed and in my opinion we’re losing it more and more. That’s why I want to bring dryness and

those important details back. TA: Do you like the modern Arabian horse or do you miss some aspects of the past in the modern Arabian horse? KD: Some yes, for example my number one stallion in the world nowadays is “El Rasheem” he is just breathtaking.
PEOPLE But in many others, as we say modern Arabians, they become to long in the body, a super important Arabian characteristic is a short back! Many “modern arabians” become to big and missing big black eyes, they are losing “the Arabian spirit”. TA: We see more and more that old breeding programs are being shut down and not passed over to the next generation, losing some valuable knowledge about bloodlines. Do you think this will give problems in the future? KD: No, not so quickly. It is of course a shame that some nice breeding programs ended up, but there are newcomers as well with a vision, but not so many. Sometimes horses that are sold, out of those programs have new chances as well to be mixed with other lines and creating something new. TA: You are a worldwide respected judge. When did you start judging and what do you find interesting about judging the Arabian show horses of today? KD: I’m judging already more than 20 years, so I’m a ‘senior’ judge with a lot of experience (but I ‘am young of mind ;) ). While travelling around the globe, you have the chance to see many kind of breeding programs, you see quickly the impact of some stallions. It opens your mind and you can always learn something, horse breeding is a never ending story and we must react quicker than rato 30 years ago. TA: Do you think thee is a big difference in showing as it was 10 years ago. Not only talking about the quality in horses but also at the atmosphere and the ways shows are being held nowadays? KD: If you would ask that question 20 or 30 years ago it would be the same answer, yes after a decade things change, some in a positive way, some in a bad way. Big shows become of course very professional, there is nothing wrong with that but our community needs to invest in the basic level of our breed too! TA: What was the most memorable moment of your judging career? KD: There are already a lot of nice moments, but judging for the first time the ”World Championships” in Paris is something special. I also have nice memories

KOENRAAD DETAILLEUR of judging the Brazillian Nationals, the USA Nationals, Dubai show and judging in countries like Azerbaijan, Kurdistan, Oman… TA: Which show is still on your list to judge? KD: It’s a long time ago that I was judging Aachen and so far I never judged Scottsdale so it would be nice to judge these shows one day. TA: How/Where would you see yourself, five years from now? KD: To have some homebred A show winners in my barn. TA: Is there anything specific you want to add to this interview to tell to the readers? KD: Yes, we are in a very bad period for the moment, covid is destroying our daily lives and I hope within a year of here it will be over, so we can continue our life like before. The same in the Arabian horse breeding today, it’s in the bad times that you have to invest and continue to breed, because my slogan is after rain sunshine is coming. Never give up! Breeding today must be done in a clever way, observe your mares individually, look for what they need to become better, do you need better shoulders or shorter backs, longer croups… Look for a stallion that give you that specific point and use him only for that, breeding is not mathematics but a long term way, do it step by step. I have always been attracted to the authenticy and to what represents its essence: the Arabian horse is the essence of the authenticy. I began my breeding career with the purchase of a three year old stallion Parragon who became “my horse”. The inspiration for my career was Roberto Borgato, former president of ANICA, who gave me the broodmare Lyma, from the Royal breeding farm in Jerez de la Frontera and from whom my breeding career began. Following the Golden Cross line I reached some success in shows. I bred from these lines Golden Cross Kalahary Desert from a pure Egyptian stallion son of the famous Moroc. After some difficulties in

finding the right handler for him, I entrusted him to a trainer and so began the national successes: Travagliato, Castel di Sangro, etc... and also across the border, as in Switzerland (Class A) and Austria (Wels and Class B International). A month later Christine Jamar came to my home to buy him and bring him to her breeding farm and make him compete in several shows reaching the result of Champion Stallions. My desire to know and understand made me travel several times in the United States in search of purebred Arabians. There I had the pleasure to meet the owner of Talking Water whose diamond was represented by the stallion Thee Marshal V - Desperado V by Varian Arabian. I then oriented my research towards the pure Egyptian going to Babolna, former royal breeding become state-owned, buying a broodmare Aisa B - which gave me much satisfaction in breeding - and believing in

a new young stallion Royal Colours at his reproductive debut. From this crossbreeding was born Cayenne T (also the result of an unusual bet with a friend) that in the hands of Paolo Capecci won all the Egyptian Event in Italy, and took third place in the category at Lanaken, which was a sort of European championship of Straight Egyptian. Cayenne T was then sold in France. Wanting to know and more and more attracted to the tribal world, after reading a text lent to me by Simonetta Ferrarin, I bought two black broodmares from Spain by the Tahawy Family, descendants of the tribes living on the banks of the Nile, dedicated to breeding racehorses. One of the most important person of my life is Monika Savier, who introduced me to the world of the Middle East and with whom I traveled several times for the curiosity to see and know that authentic Arab world. With her I visited the navel of the world of the Arabian horse, El Zahraa

PEOPLE where the pure Egyptian began and where the genetics of my Aisa started, the pyramids of Sakkara, excursions in the desert on horseback, private farms, shows, a whirlwind of indelible and authentic emotions. Another person who gave a turning point in my life “in the Arabian world” is Laura Mascagna who accompanied me on my way to become a member of the Disciplinary Commission Ecaho National which gave me the opportunity to travel the world meeting new Arabian lovers, breeders and new friends. Meeting the President of Quarab Italy made me curious IRAN – Hahwaz desert - hosted by guests of a nomadic tribe and Ecaho delegation

and after adding my two passions, the Arabian horse and western riding that I had been practicing for 10 years, I began to produce Quarab horses crossing Arabian mares and paint stallions homozygous. The trainer GB in Piacenza gave me professional support and after a short time I came to hold the post of Vice President AICQA (Italian Association
of Horse Quarab). This experience made me meet Enrico Curto, who started with one of my broodmares Sweet Psyche by Psyche Soul, the current quarab breeding farm Follina in Valdobbiadene. Attending a course of presentation by my friend Franck Boetto I wanted to make available my knowledge in the field of ECAHO rules that regulate the

show. I came up with a new project that was then called the Clinic of Handlers. In practice, it was a matter of transmitting to the participants a condensed set of rules and techniques for the preparation and presentation of the Arabian horse in a show. In one weekend, a preparatory course was held for amateurs who wanted to present their horse. In addition, this form was taken as a model for the creation of a real training course of 16 hours that was presented in different parts of the world. Franck Boetto, 4 times world champion handler, taught the techniques and I taught the rules. We structured a paper booklet so that participants could access the notions learned in the course. Also on this occasion Monika Savier introduced us to Iran where we held several sessions of this course invited by Shery Sharzad Amir Aslani of the Iranian Equestrian Federation. In that occasion our text was translated in Parsi language. From those experiences was born the friendship with Kambiz Thaery, show organizer, Hossein the ringmaster, Soheil Sanati, international judge and many other Iranian Arabian horse professionals. The handler clinics multiplied, we were called by the Ministry of Agriculture in Cairo where the courses were held in El Zahraa to train the staff; then in Denmark, France, Italy, and in Russia by the Arabian Horse Federation in NOVGOROD with the supervision of Irina Stigler, international judge that I will thank forever for this incredible experience. Between us and the world of the Arabian horse the magazine Tutto Arabi has always dedicated attention and space to divulge my projects and the friendship with Simone Leo and

Fabio Brianzoni has allowed to connect and divulge all these experiences. Another important project of my life has been the coorganization of shows in Sicily, in Palermo, Trapani, Segesta, Catania, San Vito Lo Capo, where I was called for an inspection by Antonio Culcasi with whom for more than ten years I have been working to give visibility to breeding in Sicily, among the regions with the highest concentration of Arabian horses and with the most important events in the national arena. Time, not spent but invested, and many experiences have shaped a person that I highly respect and that I consider a brotherly friend, Franck Boetto: from Trainer to World Champion, to Teacher, to, today, General Manager of a prestigious breeding in Bahrain.

For some time now, I have been dedicating myself to yet another project, “The mounted Arabian horse”: this is an organization made up of myself and Christian Da Pos, known as the “horse whisperer”, with whom we propose Arabian horses tamed and trained by him with relative certification of level and type of training, which adds a curriculum to the horse’s passport and can serve in the future to have management information about the subject. I believe in the mounted Arabian horse professionally

managed and proposed with competence. The center of reference is the Arab Center Club in Monselice. Now I am enjoying the essence of everything I have told you, with the birth of Viki Bella born from her mother Bella Bella, which I owe to my friendship with Rita Montalbano, manager of the stallion Wazeer Al Shaqab by Marwan Al Shaqab of the Qatar Bu Thaila Farm. q

This show was just the latest of a great show season 2020-2021 organized by EAHS consisting of the UAE National, the Emirates Arabian Horse Breeder, the Abu Dhabi International and the above metioned Al Dhafrah Arabian Horse Championship. All the shows by EAHS were impeccably organized, paying the utmost attention to compliance with regulations, both in terms of antiCovid regulations and, above all, with regard to the rules of the show, to the hospitality of the guests and to the well-being of the horses and their handlers. Owners and breeders enjoyed to participate in the shows as much as the spectators who had the chance to attend events amongst the most important and relevant ones in the world. Moreover it was possible to follow all the events in streaming through EAHS’ social channels and the Instagram profiles

I’m glad to have started this journey because thanks to We, Women project I’m having the chance to know better and more closely many women in this world who are leaving an indelible mark, with their work and their personalities. Many of the women interviewed have appointed other women as their mentors and as examples to inspire them in their everyday life, breeding and otherwise. What these mentors have done has accompanied them in their choices and in their lives as women. Now the baton is passing from hand to hand and will reach future generations. The women of today are depositing in their writings, in these interviews, words, inspirations and advice that will encourage the actions of the women of tomorrow. If some changes need to be made to the situation today, at every level and certainly on a general and global level, the women of tomorrow will be able to count on the strength and courage of the women of today. I believe that We, Women project is a precious space for those who are writing it and for those who will feel like reading it. Valuable because it represents an emotional exchange. I am Mary Ellen Chavez, Mother, Entrepreneur, Horse Breeder, and World Traveler. I am from New Mexico, USA and I have lived there my entire life. In my non horse life, for the past 25 years, I run a small chain of quick service restaurants that were started by my mother over 30 years ago. I will always blame Walter Farley and his creation of the Black Stallion books as the reason I fell in love with the Arabian horse. As I grew older, I became fascinated with the history and romance of the Straight Egyptian in particular. As I grew and learned, I became fascinated with the art of Equine Reproduction and my passion became breeding Straight Egyptian Arabian horses. There have been many people who have taken me under their wing during my journey, from Veterinarians to incredible breeders of our day and patiently taught me about this incredible beautiful animal we call the Arabian horse. One of the things that I was told by several, is to travel to other farms and see other horses and other programs so that I could witness other horses, programs, and bloodlines and this would make me a better breeder. I have made it by business to travel the World to see horses in many different countries, shows, and farms. I have been from Europe, Africa, the Middle East and China because of the Arabian horse. This incredible horse has given me the gift of friends and family around the world and in many different parts of the industry. I will be forever grateful for the opportunities I’ve had because of the Arabian horse that I would have never had otherwise. As far as being a woman, I don’t believe this has had a big significance in my journey in the
Arabian horse during this time. Although, I have learned that is because of other amazing woman in past decades had many more obstacles that they overcame in the industry in order for it to be what it is today. The Arabian horse industry was not always dominated by women as it is today and that is because of strong, determined women in the past who fought hard to break through the barriers and pave the way for woman today. My greatest obstacles have been growing two businesses at once and not always having the funds to do what I would like to with both. It takes a lot of money to make any money with horses and I’ve not always had the luxury to market and promote as I would have liked. I’ve had to think outside of the box and become creative with what I do. I have learned some valuable lessons along my journey and wouldn’t change it! One has to be very resilient, passionate, and intelligent in order to be involved with horses. We invest many of our hopes and dreams into each foal we produce and each horse we have on our farm. Horses get into your heart and soul and become part of your inner fiber. They also get hurt and sometimes foals don’t survive. We have to be able to set aside our emotion and make business decisions even when it hurts. It is a very difficult thing to pick yourself up, regroup, and go on after a disaster with one of our beloved horses. There are days when we wonder why we are doing this and then, you walk out to the barn, one of those velvety muzzle’s nuzzles the side of your face and makes you smile. This is why I named my farm Sonrisa Farms, Sonrisa is Spanish for smile. That is when you know why you keep doing it.

My name is Dulce Rosas. I was born and live in São Paulo city, Brazil and I breed Arabian horses at Wolf Arabians, Boituva, São Paulo state. I started riding horses when I was a little kid, about five years old, during vacations, in Campos do Jordão, a beautiful city in the middle of the mountains, where my family has a country house. I first met the Arabian horses when a group of friends invited me to attend an auction. Well, my intention was just to watch, but guess what, it was love at first sight and ended up buying an Arabian riding horse, etc. After some time, I started to participate in endurance ridings and was wonderful to be in contact with such beautiful, great athletes, incredibly smart and versatile horses. Few years later, I decided to start breeding Arabian horses, that besides the pleasure and joy of being around these fantastic horses, gave me
the opportunity to meet people from all around the world, attending to shows as a visitor, or as an exhibitor, visiting farms in everywhere and, especially, meeting some truly great friends. As a breeder, since the very beginning, my breeding program was based on horses with powerful movement, structure, big and expressive eyes. As a halter breeder, type and beauty, there is no need to say, has been always there. I am very happy with the evolution of the way I chose and so far, I’ve bred many champions and exported horses to many different countries. I believe that women have a special feeling, a special way to communicate with such sensitive and intelligent animals as Arabian horses. One of my favourite moments is when I’m at my farm and see the new and always so expected babies coming and watch them playing around while their mothers are grazing.

My name is Flávia Torres and I am the proud owner of FT Arabians, located in the city of Boituva, São Paulo state, Brazil. I live at farm with my husband Brasilio Machado that has supported me all the time. I’m a breeder since 1992 when my passion for Arabian horses started, participating in that time at Equine Endurance events. Today, I feel very fullfield for have bred some special horses like FT Shaella and FT Havanna El Keav. Several women have collaborated with the Arabian horse throughout its history. Normally this activity is largely dominated by men and it
makes difficult for us to conquer our space. It is not an easy task. However today the world is evolving and we can see more women occupying spaces in the most diverse areas and this is also happening in the Arabian horse scenery. I believe that with the love, patience and dedication of us women this becomes possible and we can collaborate a lot for the breeding. I trust that on this way we can stimulate the new generations to improve more and more.

My name is Kasia Dolińska-Witkowska, I come from Poland. Since childhood I have been interested in horses. I liked photographing them and as a young girl I used to ride horses. I started my adventure with Arabian horses when I was 17. I loved photographing horses so I put all my love to Arabians into photographing these beautiful animals. I was inspired to photograph Arabians by my friend Lilianna Dembska, who was taking pictures amateurishly and collecting all the books, magazines, postcards, stamps related to Arabians. In 2000 I bought my first pure bred Arabian horse Esent (Elsing - Etylda). It was my riding horse. In the course of time I wanted to have a mare for breeding, from which I could get a foal. And so in 2002 I bought my first Arabian mare named Zaliczka (Borek - Zadziora) (I called her Zalia for short). From her comes the name of the stud “Zalia Arabians”, which I run together with my husband Robert.
Arabian horse breeding is difficult, but I persistently pursue my goal to breed Arabian horses of the highest world level. Breeding requires humility, commitment and you have to do it with all your heart. I fulfill my dreams and I am fully satisfied because I do what I love. Self-confidence is extremely important for a woman in this world. If we are confident, people will also believe that we are in the right place at the right time. We need to know why we are doing all this and what we want to achieve. This will really keep us focused, active and proud to walk forward. A woman in the Arab world has to work with many people. Empathy, understanding and trust are important for her. In this way she will be able to build a community of people who will strive for success together. It is about being able to understand the other person. I am surrounded by women who are also in love with Arabian horses: Patrycja Makowska, Liliana Dembska, Urszula Łęczycka, Angelika Wadas and I can always count on mutual help. We always give each other advice and motivate each other.

My name is Elisa Grassi. I was born and raised in Italy, in a small town close to the city of Parma. I graduated from University in Public Relations and Advertising. What I do now is a bit broader than my studies would suggest. I love photography and it has become in the last years a big part of my life. Arabian horse photography, that is. I also take care of advertising campaigns for several clients and try to manage all their needs as far as public relations and promotion goes. Next to it I cooperate since a few years with Lara Ames and Mieke Opsteyn in the production of the magazine Arabian Horse Times Abroad. I never really approached the Arabian horse world, I was born into it. My dad used to breed Arabian horses and was very involved for many years with them. He’s been for some years the secretary of the Italian Arabian horse association and I used to follow him everywhere to the shows. Let’s say, I never really had a choice… and I am glad so. I grew up with the horses and they have always been a constant in my life. I would like to think that there is no difference between men and women in our world. Some of the greatest breeders in the Arabian horse history are women… And I am extremely lucky to be able to work with some incredible ladies, in different aspects of my job. So I really don’t think there is any difference between men and women in our world any more… nor should anybody
make one. There are powerful, smart and hard working women all around us and I’m proud to know many of them. I didn’t find any difficulties in proposing myself in this world. I strongly believe that WE, Women have a lot to offer, just as much as any men, if not more. Like Voltaire said “God created women to tame men”. I am 40 years old, and there have been women in my mother’s and grandmother’s generation that fought for equality. We might have not reached it to 100% in every aspect of life or in any given job, but I believe we’re pretty close. And rightfully so. I think that to pursue your dream you should never give up. If you believe in your dreams, if you have a vision and you want to reach it, you should never ever give up. You might fall, and you need to find the strength to get back on your feet and pursue your goals. Some might take longer than others to achieve, some might be easier than others… but at the end of the road you will look back and realized you have learned from your mistakes, that you are stronger than you thought and that your dream finally stands right in front of you. I don’t know if my life or my story can be an inspiration to other women. I would hope so. I would hope my daughter will look at me one day and be proud of the woman who raised her. And I wish her to find the strength and passion to pursue her dreams.

My name is Raquel Sorvilo, born in the city of São Paulo and living in the City of Socorro/SP since I was 4 years old. I’m from Haras Vale Formoso, daughter of owners João Roberto Sorvilo and Eliza Sorvilo, and today I work for an Insurance Broker, a family company. Since I was little, when I moved to Socorro in the mid-90s, I had the privilege of living and growing up in the middle of nature and my father’s horse breeding farm. I remember that my brother and I always ran across the pastures, playing and taking care of the horses. I started participating in the exhibitions very early, accompanying my parents and I remember that I always wanted to be in the middle, I even participated in many halter and performance tests. There were countless
memories, smiles, incredible experiences that were provided by this creation. Within the Arabian Horse Universe in Brazil, I was very well received by the handlers who guided me in the best way and supported my development. I even had the privilege of having a wonderful experience in Scottsdale, Arizona, featuring a horse among many other handlers. Making a dream come true requires a number of qualities, no matter how difficult that dream is, it is necessary to always remain firm in your commitment and never give up, always persist, not forgetting your principles. It is very important to be able to focus and have a positive mindset, be flexible and always be willing to learn.

SPECIAL My name is Yassmin Atieh, owner of Petra - Arabians in Egypt. I always loved and had enormous passion for horses it was not until 2004 that I started sharing my love with the Arabian Horses. Now I can consider my self a true breeder with my 3rd generation in my small horsy family. I majored in dentistry but I dedicated my life to horses, I am also an Arabian show announcer, writer, translator, painter, artist, animal lover, animal rescuer, and was a DC for a little while. Simply let’s say I’m a female that keeps exploring the Arabian horse world. I love everything related to art, animals, and freedom. I have a mixed origin; I’m a proud Palestinian / Jordanian from my father side and my mother is Egyptian / Greek. I was born and have lived most of my life in Egypt. I was told that I started crying every time I see a horse when I was 2 years old just to touch him, then I kept dreaming everyday to own a horse and keep in my bedroom (I even asked to have an extra bed for him). In 1990 my father promised me a horse, he was working in Kuwait - a gynecologist- but the Gulf war came upon us, so the dream was postponed till 2004. When we went to the Zahraa State Stud Auction, I met my first true love, a free spirited colt whose name was Shalan by Rashdan. He was literally my everything since that day, till his tragic death at very young age. The world crumbled over my shoulders, and hits kept coming, loosing horses, family members, changing places and financial problems. That’s life, I realized that every time I could still stand up again, regenerate my energy and create a whole new thing, sometimes alone and few times with my friends support but I kept coming back. What does it mean today to be a woman like me in the Arabian horse world? Well imagine adding to your question that I’m living in an Arab country, where believe me, women are not treated equally in any aspect, except maybe little. When I started with Shalan we went to the race tracks, I was the youngest and the only female there, was it tough ?!! Yes, it was. You walk around people
and you look like an alien, they see you as a female before seeing you as a human. After Shalan died I left the race tracks - I was young and never knew the abuse that happened in races for horses behind the curtains -. Going to the Arabian horse breeding community was different because there were other females, that already fought the fight long ago and managed to prove that there is no difference between a male and a female in the breeding society of the Arabian Horses in Egypt. The old wise female breeders helped me out without being even aware of it. Somehow I found difficulties in proposing myself in this world. For an example, you are seen first as a female, how you look, what you do and you get judged immediately, then maybe you are seen as a breeder and as a human. For me now my friends are the people that I know they won’t judge me or treat me in any way that I would not like, the other obstacle is abuse for the horses, in farms, in shows and in races, that was one of my battles. Be strong as a stallion yet smart like a mare. Yes, you have to be both smart and strong to overcome all the obstacles of being from the other 50% of humanity that is seen differently. More importantly you should not loose your feminine touch with your horses. Sometimes I literately touch my horses with the back of my hand because they need the softest touch possible. We “women” have the magical touch with horses and no one can deny it. We have to hold on to it, and we have to roar at the same time in the face of sexism, racism or abuse. I never thought my experience and history could be an inspiration for a future generation of women in this world because I’m another girl in this vastly world trying to prove herself. So I never thought I would be helpful. But remember when I said the female breeders helped me out, today I’m doing so without being aware just like they did. Besides my hobby of breeding Arabian horses, I run a consulting company for branding & marketing strategy, I am an international speaker and coach and business mentor for women that want to have it all. My biggest mission is to transform business women into kick ass lady bosses through strategic business mentoring and to become natural female leaders that lead with presence and confidence and believe in themselves through the transformative power and sensitivity of the Arabian horse. I was obsessed with horses since I could talk and walk. When I was 15 years old, my dad finally gave in to my begging and bought a Nagel-bred Arabian Stallion for me. This stallion was a huge part of my life and my best friend, we competed in tournaments (against Quarter horses) and to everyones surprise: we won quite a bit. But most importantly he taught me the power of being confident and to believe in myself. On the days I was insecure or not believing in myself or us as a team, he challenged the living hell out of me, on the days I felt confident and like we could conquer the world, he was the most amazing partner of all times, so I started to learn that the only difference was: ME and my confidence. This was the starting point of using Arabian horses to teach women how to become confident and learn to stand in their power. I am at awe of how the Arabian horse is able to read and transform people in general, and women in particular, sometimes it’s almost like magic and I experience things in this process that are almost unbelievable. I always had this vision of breeding super high quality Arabian horses in black, and started
breeding 6 years ago, in 2015. By following the advice of some amazing mentors and my intuition I hit the Jackpot with the first foal I bred: Shayan de Magnifique. Fast forward 5 years later we are selling horses globally and Shayan is breeding some of the best black mares the world has to offer. It shows that if you believe in what you do, it can go really, really fast. I believe - and found out over time - breeding is like in any business: the beginning is hard, making the first connections is hard, creating a brand is hard, the first sale is hard, but over time and with growing confidence it gets easier and easier. At the beginning I went to shows or breeding presentations and I knew noone there, it was really scary, but I took my courage and did what I had always done: kick myself in the ass, wear heels (maybe this part was not such a good idea), smile, and speak to people about our common passion and their stories about the Arabian horse. I strongly believe that if you are confident, listen to your intuition, don’t care what people think about you, have a vision that lights you like a fire-cracker, and most importantly believe without doubt that what you want and dream of is possible for you, you can achieve anything you desire. I see it every day in women and it lights me up like nothing else. I think my story shows what is possible within a short amount of time if you believe in your vision and yourself. However what I find inspiring is learning from all of the other female breeders that have paved the way before us, and I am so incredibly blessed and grateful to call some of them my mentors. Their stories are the true inspiration of what is possible and how to leave a legacy.

My name is Paola Marinangeli, I am Italian and from 30 years now I am a painter specialised in Arabian Horses and Sighthounds, both are a great passion for me. I have always loved horses, from my youth, and occasionally enjoyed to paint horses but not Arabian, more than 30 years ago reading a magazine dedicated to horses I have seen some Arabian horse photos and realized how special their beauty is so started to collect infos, and through a beautiful book by Gigi Grasso dedicated to Arabian horses in Egypt I have fallen in love with Albadeia horses and became friend with a wonderful person, the late Dr. Nasr Marei who from the beginning encouraged me to dedicate my art to this fantastic breed and so I did. Thanks to my passion for Arabian horses I have been so lucky to meet fantastic people and many of them are women, like me, I strongly believe that women are important in the Arabian Horse Community in all type of activities related to this fantastic breed: breeders, handlers, artists, photographers, there are ‘excellencies’…. excellent women in all these activities. The number of women connected in a way or another to the Arabian horse breed increased over the last years, this makes me feel very happy, I have been so lucky to be appreciated, from the really
beginning, from Italian breeders but also from the most important breeders in several Countries. I had no difficulties of obstacles and the trust and appreciation I always had from my clients and friends is still a ‘challenge’ to make my work in the most possible accurate and passionated way. I am, despite the age, still a dreamer…..have a lot of projects and dream that hope partially…to fulfill. This is typical of people involved with artistic activities, I put a lot of passion and dedication in my projects, in my work and believe this is the secret who helped me to realized many of my projects and have to say, also some important dreams…but have many still waiting. Well, I can not say if my experience and personal history can be of inspiration for a future generation of women but my experience taught me to be determined, passionated and strong in pursuing my projects, working hard and never stop learning. From this point of view, Ithis could be more than an inspiration, a suggestion for future generation of women, we all know that we still have to be ‘superior’ in our activities in order to be appreciated, and there is still a lot to do in order to reach equality in all field of activities but the message, very simple message, I can leave to future generation of young women, is….

My name is Sandra Zänglein, I’m now 50 years old and I work as a dental technician. I live together with my two daughters, 3 dogs and 16 Straight Egyptian horses right in the middle of Germany, in a really tiny village in Bavaria. When I’m not working as a dental technician, I follow my dream and work with horses: I’m breeding Straight Egyptian horses and I’m training both horse and rider. Occasionally, I have also showed my Arabians under saddle and as amateur handler at breeding shows. I have always had this dream: a stud farm of my own, breeding horses and spending quality time with them. When I was 10 years old I got my first horse, an Arabian mix. It was a pure coincidence that I ended up with a pony with some Arab blood in it, but it changed my life. I fell in love with the race! Other horses followed, but I never forgot that first one. In 1992 I visited my first Arabian stud farm and came back home the proud owner of an Arabian mare. Ever since I have known this one truth: Arabian horses are my favorite! I was deeply touched – I felt their energy, their majestic elegance, their spirit and their extreme charisma.
The next steps were the buying the first stallion, finding the perfect place for my stud and starting to breed. Shah Mon Arabian Stud was born, a place with only Straight Egyptian horses, focusing on old, exquisite bloodlines. Also my business feel’n’ride was founded. How did I make that happen? First of all, I was really lucky to have parents that supported me and help me live my dream. But I guess what really worked for me was that I never gave up on my ideas. In the beginning there is always a vision, you have to give it some space to develop and then you have to be brave enough to act upon it. And this is true for all things in life. I never had any negative experience working as a woman in the Arabian horse world. My impression is that I’m always treated with respect. I guess the reason for my positive experience is that the people that I work with, or I share my passion with, are like- minded. Every time I look at my horses, I realise what a lucky person I am, because I still love what I’m doing.

My name is Lisa Brown. Wife to Willie Brown, founder of Elkasun Arabian Stud (EKS) in South Africa. As of 2015, I have been actively involved in the Stud with day-to-day management and riding/exercising of the horses. I also take care of all administrative and PR-related duties. I started riding at the age of 6 and competed in Endurance rides for 8 years before I met Willie. After this, my focus shifted towards the world of showing, and I now ride for my own pleasure and enjoyment. As mentioned above, I started riding at a young age and was introduced to Arabians through Endurance riding. As a teenager I owned 3 Endurance horses and competed in various races across the country. I was always fascinated by the breed and started researching bloodlines from a young age. I became very passionate about the breed very quickly. Whilst I was still in school, for example, I designed a website where I advertised selected Arabians for sale from around South Africa and assisted buyers in finding their ideal Arabian horse. As of recent, I started my own (very small) PR/Design business, since this has also been one of my interests/hobbies from a young age.
In my case, I think that my intense passion and love for the breed plays a part in the way our Stud is run, since I can give Willie valuable support and input. I think it is one of the greatest honours in life to find a partner that shares your passion – especially when it comes to horses, since it is a very all-consuming job/hobby! I haven’t found any difficulty in proposing myself to this world, not as of yet, since my role is more “behind the scenes”. Personally, without ambition, vision, dedication and passion it will be hard to realize your dream in any line of work, but especially in the industry Arabian horses. You need to have a deep love for what you do. I feel blessed that my (our) greatest love and passion is our everyday job! I think that many times it is overlooked when young girls say they wish to work with horses for a living – but just by looking at the many talented women in our Arabian Horse “world”, it is very clear that it CAN be done! And, that there is a place for everyone – we all have a role to play.

My name is Anna Scarpa. I live in Pordenone, a busy industrial town in North East Italy. My father is Italian and my mother is from the UK. I guess this is the part of the family where my love of horses comes from!
The elegance, the beauty and pride of an Arabian cannot be compared to any other breed. Their eyes reach the deepest part of your soul and without even realizing it you are captured and hypnotized for life.
I am an Arabian horse breeder, rider, show organizer, journalist, translator and speaker. I have travelled to many different countries and have been able to meet many wonderful people who I always keep in touch with and exchange opinions about any new developments in the Arabian horse world. I had the pleasure of being part of the Tutto Arabi magazine team for some years and working alongside such a professional team widened my knowledge considerably - an experience I will always treasure.
I spent many years out of the saddle and just attending some of the most important Arabian horse shows worldwide for both work and pleasure. I must admit that, as a woman, I have always been very welcomed and helped a lot by everyone I met. Many successful breeders around the world always made my stays very enjoyable, answered all my questions and satisfied my curiosities. They taught me a lot about bloodlines and history.
I started riding in 1985 and fell in love with Arabian horses as a little girl. I was only physically introduced to the Arabian horse world and to this wonderful breed in 2003 when I bought my first Arabian stallion. He soon turned out to be not only an amazingly beautiful horse but also an excellent riding companion. He was my friend and little did I know we would be taking part in the European Championship for Arabian Sports Horses in Stadl Paura (AT) just a few months later.
When I met my partner in 2014 - who happens to be a very popular quarter horse breeder and trainer at an international level - I was reminded how important it is to ride one’s horses, so I started riding again and suddenly it all made sense. Today my 13 year old daughter Giulia rides our Arabian mare Yuma (a successful show horse and a wonderful broodsmare), in show jumping and dressage. Yuma is also the most enjoyable trail ride horse.

I think in the Arabian horse world, like with any other breed, there are mainly two different kinds of people: breeders and loving owners. So, the first question one should ask oneself is: “Which do I want to be?” If the answer is a breeder, then you must be prepared to go through a lot as this is going to take up a lot of energy, time and money. Breeding means research, knowledge, experience, patience, love, devotion and sometimes disappointment and sadness as you are dealing with mother nature and she is not always fair. It is not something you become overnight; it takes years and years of commitment; it requires a knowledge of horses from many different aspects. Today, I think it is very difficult to become a successful breeder as the standards have risen considerably. There has been an incredible selection and there has been a very large increase in the number of breeders, especially show wise. What I always reply when asked what I think of shows and breeding is that we need to create a market for all those horses that, although very nice, will never be approaching the show ring or be used in breeding. These horses need a future and loving owners who enjoy them or they will just be sitting in breeders stables. Organizers and major breeders should take example from the USA and seriously start putting their energy into creating and opening a new market and new opportunities.
Trusts have been created for other things, why not create one for ridden horses? After all it is in everybody’s interest to create such an option. I know there are a lot of people willing to do this. Owners of ridden horses should also make an effort to attend these venues when organized. I personally organized a Festival a few years ago in Italy offering free accommodation for the ridden horses and very few horses registered…….. funnily enough, they were all from abroad! We are living in difficult times. COVID has done a lot of damage worldwide. I am sure many breeders are struggling to hang on to everything they have worked hard for all these years. There is something called humanity that is sometimes forgotten by many, and I feel that breeders and above all to today’s buyers when going to buy a horse - whether for your stud or for leisure - should respect the hard work, the commitment and the sacrifices that some breeders go through. A lot of breeders do this for a living, not as a hobby. They make a living out of this and today, under all these sad circumstances, it is most important not to take advantage of other people’s difficulties. We must all focus on working together on something that can put us all back on track and encourage the Arabian Horse World to grow.

DU From the 18th till the 20th of March, Equestrian industry buyers, horse-loving families, aspiring riders and international artists meet in-person once again at Dubai International Horse Fair 2021, held at the Dubai World Trade Centre (DWTC) for the 17th Dubai International Arabian Horse Championship hosted alongside the 16th edition of the Dubai International Horse Fair.
BAI From international equestrian brands to sculptors and advanced equine medicine experts, DIHF is gathering a diverse range of global industry leaders and creators. Held under the patronage of H.H. Sheikh Hamdan bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Deputy Ruler of Dubai and UAE Minister of Finance, DIHF 2021 provided a much-needed meeting point for the equestrian industry as well as a fun family outing, following a year that was defined by virtual interaction and missed business opportunities. Held over three days, the Dubai International Arabian Horse Championship is a showcase and competition of the heritage, beauty and agility of the world’s finest Arabian horses, with prize money of US$4 million. Visitors to DIHF 2021 enjoyed the fun range of familyfriendly features on offer at the show, and were able to experience a variety of attractions; young animal lovers could enjoy free pony riding as well as several stunts and workshops were offered. Meanwhile, the equestrian-themed Art Gallery showcasd creative brilliance from artists from across the world; while the Heritage Village was delving into the UAE’s rich association with horses as well as providing a glimpse into Dubai’s maritime history, while young horse lovers could enjoy the petting zoo. DIHF 2021 was being held under stringent safety and hygiene protocols. Judges for the event were Mr Raouf Abbas from Egypt, Mr. Gianmarco Aragno and Mr. Christian Moschini from Italy, Mr. Eric Gear from France, Mr. Terry Holmes from the United States, Mr. Gideon Reisel from the Netherlands, Mrs. Michaela Weidner from Germany and Mr. Tomasz Tarczynski from Poland.

DUBAI International Arabian Horse Championship 2021
The show started with a nice large group of filly foals all of superb quality, underlining how much the quality has improved over the years within the UAE. Winner of the filly foal class was the beautiful ultra refined AB Bdoor (AJ Azzam x Torfah al Zobair) – bred and owned by Adnan Alsheihhi. Second in this class was the showy Dhai al Hawajer (AJ Mardan x Llucky Star) bred and owned by Dr. Ghanem Alhajri. At the 3rd position we would find FAM Esplendida (D Seraj x D Ra’afah) – bred and owned by Federico Jordan. The show continued with the colt foals. An almost unanimous win for the big moving Falah al Hawajer (Aned al Hawajer x Marami al Hawajer) – bred and owned by Dr. Ghanem AlHajri. Leaving the second place for the pretty Musaab OS (AJ Kafu x Arsenia OS) – bred and owned by Osterhof Stud. Third in this class was SQ Jabbar (D Seraj x My Fair Rose-D) – bred and owned by Al Shaqran Arabian Horse Stud. Some top quality yearling fillies were up next. All scoring above the 90 points! It was a nice battle between the top three. All beautiful and eligible to the class win. With a beautiful score of 92.40 points, the victory of the first group of yearling fillies went to R.A.K. Onood (FA El Rasheem x Ward al Adeyat), bred and owned by Ras Al Khimah Arabian Horse Stud. This filly scored full twenties in head and neck. Later in the yearling filly championships this filly took the Gold medal. Second in this class with 92.20 points was AJ Ghazalah (Shanghai EA x Ghadeer AM) – bred and owned by Ajman Stud. At third place with 91.90 points in this though class was Demasheq Alsayed (Validoro x Delight’s Divah RB), bred and owned by Al Sayed Stud. scored the same beautiful score of 92 points! Due to more points on type, it was the Ajman Stud bred and owned, AJ Alula (AJ Marzan x Ayat Almuawd) who took the class lead, leaving the second place to the equally beautiful D Beisan (D Seraj x Rah Rosalia) – bred and owned by Dubai Arabian Horse Stud. In the yearling championships, D Beisan took revenge and claimed the Silver Medal, leaving the bronze to AJ Alula! A very large group of 17! Fillies aged two years old, was up next. All very pretty and ready to take the lead. The very showy and pretty Al Aryam Banafsaj (Dominic M x Al Aryam Basma) – bred by Al Aryam Arabians and owned by Ajman Stud, took the lead with a great score of 92.70 points! Later in the championships, this filly took the Gold medal with the junior fillies! Second in this class with 92.40 points was D Jooreyyah (D Seraj x D Nawal) – bred and owned by Dubai Arabian Horse Stud. A third position with 91.90 points was for the pretty, big moving filly Cyclana OS (Cyclone OS x Maryse OS) – bred by Osterhof Stud and owned by Al Faisaly Stud. The show continued with another large group of 15 fillies age 3 years old. Clear winner of this class with 92.80 points and later silver medal champion was the pretty D Judi (AJ Azzam x Elle Flamenca) – bred and owned by Dubai Arabian Horse Stud. Azzam x AJ Bahja) – bred by Ajman Stud and owned by Adnan Alsheihhi. After these lovely young ladies, it was time for the senior mare classes. Starting with the mares aged four to six years old. In this class, scoring above the 90 points was more rule than exception. The excitement raise when not one but two fillies scored the massive total of 93.20 points! Both of them scoring almost full twenties on type, head and neck. It were the points on movement of AJ Tarim (Emerald J x Espinilla) – bred and owned by Ajman Stud, who gave her the leading position, leaving the second place to the Dubai Arabian Horse Stud, bred and owned, D Shihanah (FA el Rasheem x D Shahla). Later in the championships, Shihanah took her revenge by claiming the Gold medal with the senior mares, leaving AJ Tarim to take the bronze. At the third position in this though class with 92.50 points, came the big moving Manaret Babel (AJ Barzan x Munirah Albidayer) – bred by Babel Arabian Horse Stud and owned by Al Jawaher Arabian horse Stud. As the day progressed so did the scores. If you thought 93.20 was high, the girls in the next class even topped that, scoring a total of 93.70! And again this time, not one mare scored this massive total, but once again there was a tie between two fantastic mares. Both scoring the perfect line of full twenties on type. It was the big movement of Wildona (Shanghai EA x Wilda) – bred and owned by Michalow Stud that gave her the that extra push for claiming the class win. The second place was for Bint Hazy al Khalediah (El Palacio VO x Hazy al Khalediah) – bred by Al Khalediah
SHOWS AND EVENTS Stables and owned by Al Khashab Stud. In the final senior mares championships, Wildona was left out of the medals while Hazy took home the silver. Worth mentioning were the other ladies in this class. All former champions and loved all around the world. Closing the top five listing were Delights Divah RB (Ajman Moniscione x Honeys Delight RB) 91,90 points, Esperanzza al Ventur (FA el Shawan x Honeys Delight RB) 91,80 points and D Shahla (Marajj x FT Shaella) with 91.60 points. The last class of the female qualifications were the mares aged 10 years and older. Clear winner of this class with 92.70 points was the pretty Perfinka (Esparto x Perfirka) – bred by Bialka and owned by Al Rajhiat Stud. Second in this class with 90.80 points was Nawal by Apolo (TS Apolo x Zaira DR) – bred by Roberto Deluca and owned by Al Jazeera Arabian Horse Stud. The next day was reserved for the male classes, starting with two nice classes of yearling colts. The first group being led with 92.70 points by the charismatic D Sharar (D Seraj x FT Shaella) – bred and owned by Dubai Arabian horse Stud. Later in the championships, this colt took the gold medal. Second in this class with 91.40 points was J Zilzal ( Yas BHM x Shalwa Alkhail) – bred and owned by Jumaa Almarzooqi. The second group of yearling colts had again a Dubai Arabian Horse stud bred and owned colt as the group leader. With 91.90 points the pretty D Rasel (FA el Rasheem x Ladi Veronika) scored a beautiful score on type, head and neck and in the final championships, he took the silver medal behind his stable-mate Sharar. A great success for their breeders and owners! Second in this group op yearling colts with 91.60 points and later bronze medal champion was ALR Burkan (SQ Burkan x Yaqoubiyah al Zobair) – bred by Mohamed al Rasheed and owned by Khalifa Alsuwaidi. The show continued with a big class of 14 colts of two years old. Clear winner with 92.10 points and later silver medal champion was Arjuwan Albidayer (AJ Marzan x Allezandra Albidayer) – bred and owned by Albidayer Stud. Second in this class with 91.70 points was AJ Ajban (AJ Kafu x AJ Saphira) – bred by Ajman Stud and owned by Sheikh Abdullah bin Majid al Qassimi. The last group of junior colts was the class of the three years old. A strong class with some really good colts. Leader of the class with the massive score of 93.20 was the exotic D Sheimaz (FA el Rasheem x Ladi Veronika) – bred and owned by Dubai Arabian Horse stud. This colt scored full twenties on type and in the final junior colt championships, he claimed the gold medal. Second in this stong class with
92.20 points and later bronze medal champion was the charismatic RFI Unique (AF Maden x RFI Ultraa Al Maktub) – bred by RFI Arabians and owned by RFI Unique partnership. After the junior male classes it was time for the big boys! All fifteen stallions in the class 4-6 years old stallions scoring above the 90 points! The top two was between two great colts. Both scoring above the 93 points! In the end it was D Sheraj (FA el Rasheem x Ladi Veronika) who showed perfect twenties on both type and head & neck who took the lead with 93.30 points! Later in the final championships, Sheraj took the silver medal. That the cross between FA el Rasheem and the 2009 Silver world champion mare Lady Veronika (Versace) is successful was once again proven at this show as Sheraj was not the only medal winner. His little brother D Rashel took the silver with the yearling colts and with the junior colts it was D Sheimaz who took the gold! What a great success for their breeder and owner of Dubai Arabian Horse stud! Second in the senior stallion class with 93.20 points was the big moving ES Prince (ES Sarab x Raghad al Nasser) ,bred and owned by Sheikh Abdullah bin Majid al Qassimi, who also scored full twenties on type. Later in the championships, Prince took the bronze medal. Next to go where the stallions aged 7-9 years old. Winner of this class with 92.60 points was the big moving Moharib al Khanza (AB Jamil la Piana x Caterina FM) – bred and owned by Ali Ghanem al Mazrouei. Second in this class with 92.30 points was Jayan de Nautiac (Shael Dream Desert x Joumalia Nautiac) – bred by Rachel Bourasse and owned by Badr Adnan Alali. The last class of the day showed the highest score of the entire show. The fantastic ES Harir (AJ Dinar x TF Magnums Magic) showed himself beautifully, scoring not only a 20 on movement but also straight twenties on type, head & neck and some fantastic 19’s all across the board for his body. With a massive total score of 94.60 points, he took not only the class win with great ease but also won the Gold medal unanimously. A great success for his breeder Sheikh Abdualla bin Majid al Qassemi and his owner of Al Saqran Stud. Second in this class with 92.00 points was the pretty Memphis 27 (El Amin x SA Misha Apal) – bred by James Swaenepoel and owned by Ajman Stud. With this last class and championship, another great edition of the Dubai International Horse show came to an end. My passion for horses... ...
has taken me on a remarkable adventure through the 45 years since I first discovered the world of the Arabian horse. Born and raised in a quiet Canadian farmland community, I began my equestrian experience by joining a local 4-H Chapter with my family’s horses. The focus was to learn about responsibility and caring for our treasured animals. The kids were all a bit ‘horse crazed’ so we had a great time learning together. We often spent summer evenings and weekends trial-riding to a neighborhood gathering or into nearby forests. Those memories are a collection of joyful chatter and moments of serenity as we rode through towering trees on rarely used dirt roads with the sunshine flickering through the leaves and if the season was right, we would stop to pick fresh blueberries. It was a magical time, only now do I fully understand how blessed I was to enjoy those precious days. When I was barely a teenager, my family moved to cattle ranching country. It seemed appropriate at the time to set my sights on breeding Quarter horses. But that all changed when a friend invited me to attended my first National Arabian horse Show. That day changed the course of my life. I embraced the world of Arabian horses with a commitment that continues to this day. After college and a colorful litany of life experiences, I am grateful to all the brilliant and talented mentors I have had and the opportunity to work with them. At the height of my involvement, I cared for many of the most treasured horses in the breed, including *Bask++, *Wizja, Fame, Dancing Flame, *Elkin, and Barbary to list only a few. These legends profoundly influenced and forever changed the future of the breed, as well as my life. Being entrusted with their care was an honor and a privilege that I never took for granted. They were as illustrious then as they are in my heart and mind today. For me, as for others, it is impossible not to be deeply moved by the Arabian horse. The connections we develop with them is so profound, they leave an imprint on our hearts that lasts a lifetime. Each horse, each experience is totally unique. It is amazing what we will sacrifice just to be close to them, to experience their essence - their incredible personality and character, their manifested noble spirit when they snort and blow, or their gentle nature when they softly nuzzle the back of your neck, or the excitement in your heart when they call out to you in recognition. It’s so simple and yet so profound. When you fall in love with an Arabian horse, it becomes a love that lasts a lifetime. I truly believe that some of them become a part of our soul. After many years of working with the Arabians, then traveling to various farms and attending a non-stop stream of horses shows, I found that there were moments when it wasn’t enough to just watch them anymore. I wanted to capture those precious but fractured seconds that stirred my heart; the sight of their powerful, animated movement, their look of pride, their incredible beauty. This inspired me to pick up a camera and focus my lens on the essence of these magnificent Arabian horses. It is a challenge that continues today. I still get such a thrill when I capture something really special. And once in a while, there are times that the horses of today take me back to special moments of my past where I again experience the magic of *Bask++, the floating beauty and elegance of *Wizja, and other legends that are gone. With these déjà vu moments I feel my cup of life overflowing with gratitude to the Arabian horse and the blessings they have given me.

Menton Show is all about prestige, ambition and the desire to compete and win. It is the same for every fan, for every breeder, for every person who has felt the fire of passion ignite for the Arabian horse, for everyone who has wanted at least once to be the best. Year after year there have been winners and losers, dropouts and returns. The world of the Arabian horse is a world of strong feelings, extreme at times, it is a world of untameable passions as these horses are. Breeding them means accepting the unknown, trying to grasp it, to understand it, deciding to be bewitched by it.
In 1994 Menton show became The Mediterranean and Arab Countries Arabian Horse Championship, a title fit for an international class show.
Since its first edition in 1991, Menton has been the stage for these great emotions, trying to bring them outside the confines of the breeding world to those who decide to be touched by the incredible beauty of these animals. In 1991 the very first show was born! It was named The Trophee des Alpes, a show with mainly Italian and French exhibitors. 1993 was the year the European Championship was organised in Menton. This event was a turning point, with a record number of participants that triggered enormous enthusiasm in the small town on the Côte d’Azur! After a break of 3 years, in 2004 Menton resumed its place in the international show calendar, classified as ECAHO ‘A’ Show. Menton once again resounded to the hooves of Arabian horses from all over the world; all of Europe, the Middle and Near East, USA, South America, Australia and Africa. 30 years have passed since that first show. The prestige of his name has grown year after year. The fans of the Arabian horse have made the importance of being present at this esteemed and appreciated event grow over time. The founding objective of this event has been achieved. Menton is and always will be the event known not just for the show itself but also as a place to exchange ideas, a show which goes beyond the goal of promoting the Arabian horse by also creating an ideal event recognised not only by all those passionate about the purebred Arabian but to be enjoyed and appreciated by everyone, a place for conversations between breeders about their tastes, their preferences amongst the mythical bloodlines, the dream of what they might produce!
SPECIAL We want to celebrate this important anniversary with a photo gallery of the faces that have animated the shows, starting with their organisers. The photo gallery covers the period from 2004 to last year. Everyone remembers which horses have won the past editions of Menton, but this time we have decided to dedicate all the space to the many people who have been protagonists of these events, who have marked their history, who with their personalities and their presence have made this show special and have enriched an incredible baggage of memories that we will all carry in our hearts forever. “ Interview with Dr. Astrid von Velsen-Zerweck "Landoberstallmeisterin" Director of the State Stud Marbach
Savier: The heritage you took on here in Marbach is a great one. Would you give us some facts and data? von Velsen-Zerweck: For historical reasons, the stud has quite considerable dimensions. We farm 1000 hectares (almost 2500 acres) divided into three studs and four outlying farms. We house 550 horses who are cared for and trained by 85 employees and 45 trainees. In our „Landesreit- und Landesfahrschule” 1000 students per year take courses for riding and carriage driving. About 500,000 visitors per year tour our premises. We maintain four different breeds of horses, Arabian horses being only one of them. The stud is over 500 years old and poses a cultural heritage we wish to maintain. As a state stud entrusted with keeping mare bands and stallions with taking a long-term view in mind, we don’t just ride every “popular” wave. For instance, we do not have “top show Arabians” here, our horses don’t necessarily comply with the

La nostra azienda agricola occupa 1.000 ettari (circa 2.500 acri), divisi in tre allevamenti e quattro fattorie periferiche. Ospitiamo 550 cavalli che sono accuditi ed addestrati da 85 dipendenti e 45 tirocinanti. Nella nostra Scuola professionale regionale, ben 1.000 studenti ogni anno frequentano corsi di equitazione e di guida di calessi e carrozze a cavallo. Circa mezzo milione di visitatori ogni anno ci onorano della loro presenza. Abbiamo qui da noi quattro diverse razze di cavalli e quella Araba è solo una di queste. L’allevamento ha cinquecento anni ed incarna una tradizione che desideriamo conservare. Trattandosi di un Allevamento di Stato, cui è stata affidata la tutela di interi branchi di fattrici e stalloni a condizione di mantenerli a lungo periodo, non ci mettiamo

modern ideals of beauty for show strains. We put emphasis on our horses being good, fine “utility” horses, not extravagantly styled products with a dubious performance ability. Currently, we observe
big changes in horse breeding. Established breeders are quitting, inexperienced new ones come and go. With ever fewer experts engaging in the horse
scene, the state studs in Europe are getting ever more important, in my opinion. With the know-
how and experience of their staff, it’s them who are
able to continue the traditions of horse breeding. Sometimes I find myself thinking that the “Haupt-
gestüte”, the four state studs in Germany whose
job is to keep mare bands in addition to stallions,
ought to take over the more important mare lines left in a void by quitting breeders. That would make for a great, direction-giving task for the state
studs, but there are structural limits to what we can do in that line of action, of course.

Al momento possiamo osservare grandi cambiamenti nell’allevamento equino. Gli allevatori consolidati si stanno ritirando dall’attività, altri nuovi e senza esperienza vanno e vengono. Con sempre meno esperti attivi sulla scena del cavallo, gli Allevamenti di Stato stanno, a mio parere, diventando sempre più importanti. Grazie alle conoscenze specifiche ed all’esperienza del loro personale, sono loro che riescono a continuare le tradizioni dell’allevamento. A volte penso che i quattro principali Allevamenti di Stato in Germania che hanno l’incarico di man-

Savier: That king was, admirably, one of the first to breed the imported horses from Arabia pure. He realized that risky purchasing expeditions were more cost-efficient if he maintained a pool of pure blood in his own country and used that for continuously improving the warmblood horses. So this is the tradition of Weil which was far ahead of his time – in the Polish and Russian state studs, for example, the blood imported from the Orient was immediately mixed and therefore lost. Where, however, are our Marbach Egyptians today? The horses that embody the tradition of Marbach? von Velsen-Zerweck: By the way, that king was also the first breeder to keep a systematic record of Arabian breeding by introducing stud books. In addition to the ancient Weil mare tail line, we tend two Egyptian families in Marbach who arrived here about 50 years ago with Hadban Enzahi. I can understand the wish to be able to tail everything back to the desert-borns. We do put a particular emphasis on these horses. We are also, however, rather successful with our horses bred from the Weil families with Polish blood, such as Pamir I and his sons Dschehim and Said, representing the

I cavalli che personificano la sua tradizione? von Velsen-Zerweck: Tra l’altro, il re che abbiamo già citato fu anche il primo allevatore a tenere sistematicamente traccia dell’allevamento degli Arabi, introducendo gli Stud Book. In aggiunta all’antica discendenza delle fattrici di Weil, qui a Marbach ci prendiamo cura di due famiglie di Egiziani che sono arrivate qui circa 50 anni fa con Hadban Enzahi. Posso capire che si voglia poter rintracciare ogni esemplare rispetto ai suoi antenati vissuti nel deserto, noi poniamo un’enfasi particolare su questi cavalli. Abbiamo tuttavia avuto grandi successi anche con le famiglie Weil di sangue polacco, come Pamir I ed i suoi discendenti Dschehim e Said, rappresentando la linea paterna di Bairactar. Questi sono interpreti di show per il carattere spiccato con cui sanno muoversi, si prestano al volere dei loro cavalieri, saltano bene e riscuotono successi nelle corse di endurance. Sfortunatamente, quello che oggi ci rimane dei cavalli beduini (Asil) di Weil si riduce a solo poche fattrici. Siamo impegnati a far aumentare questo piccolo patrimonio e perfino ad usare il transfer di embrioni per perseguire questo nostro fine. Naturalmente continuiamo anche ad incrociare con gli Egiziani che arrivarono con Hadban Enzahi, cercando con cura di avvicinarci alla tipologia moderna senza tuttavia perdere i tratti distintivi e le caratteristiche che apprezziamo così tanto: ciò che vogliamo ottenere è un cavallo con la conformazione più corretta possibile, bellissimo, capace e voglioso di esibirsi, lucido di mente e con alcuni punti favorevoli di conformazione da cavallo da monta. Con tutto il rispetto dovuto alla conservazione del tipo dell’Arabo – la nostra filosofia è sempre stata di allevare cavalli che realmente facessero qualcosa, che potessero cioè essere cavalcati e messi in mostra per puro sport, non solo nello Show Ring o per adornare il viale d’ingresso di qualche allevamento. Gli Arabi sono stati allevati come animali da cavalcare e come tali sono stati selezionati nel corso di molti secoli. I cavalli non adatti a questo scopo semplicemente morivano viste le condizioni climatiche del deserto. Oggigiorno

Bairactar sire line. They were typey performers who knew how to move, lend themselves to their riders, jumped well, and were successful in endurance racing. Unfortunately, what we have presently left of the asil Weil horses is no more than a few females.We are engaged in increasing this small stock and even use embryo transfer to this aim. Of course, we continue breeding with the Egyptians who arrived with Hadban Enzahi, carefully striving to come into touch with the modern, typey horse without losing the traits and characteristics we place great value on: what we want is a horse with a conformation as correct as possible, beautiful, able and willing to perform, clearheaded, and with some good points of a riding horse conformation. With all due respect for maintaining the Arabian type – our philosophy has always been to breed horses who can really DO something, meaning who can be ridden and shown for sports, not only in the show ring or adorning somebody’s front yard. Arabians have been bred as riding animals and selected for that for many hundreds of years. Unfit horses died under the conditions of the desert. We can’t test horses today by sending them on the long-distance rides of old, except for endurance rides, but only a small percentage of them are used for serious sports anyway. Savier: Straight Egyptian Arabians of certain families are an aim in themselves for many people: Kuwait’s breeders have weekly meetings in their stables among their horses, exchanging breeding knowhow instead of competing against each other in shows. In Germany, a lot of well-known breeders of Egyptians never participate in shows, as they find many selection criteria commonly used by ECAHO judges debatable. Particularly these horses from ancient desert lines have their own market. von Velsen-Zerweck: Our position exactly. People from all over the world come to see and purchase our horses. My predecessors here have attended to that aspect with varying intensity. I am trying to intensify that again. We can’t obtain the high prices for horses which we got in the 1970ies and 1980ies,

In particolare, questi cavalli, discendenti delle antiche stirpi del deserto, hanno un mercato tutto loro. von Velsen-Zerweck: Esattamente la nostra convinzione. however. There are reasons for that in history: after World War II, Marbach was almost the only big stud keeping Arabian horses, which made it more or less a pilgrimage site. Today, you can find Arabian horses at every corner – but they are not Marbach horses, of course. Savier: What Marbach used to do was base their breeding on the best foundation horses available, and combine them cleverly. Somebody who would like to make a top show jumper out of a desert Arabian, however, is striving for a combination that won’t be. von Velsen-Zerweck: Exactly – it won’t work. In my opinion, Arabians need to lend themselves to their riders to some extent, and they need to have basic paces of a certain quality, just like any other horse – it’s the only way to ensure that breeding products who are not saleable in the market for breeding horses are fit to be sold to normal leisure time riders or as endurance horses. That’s why careful selection is a necessity. There is also an

Però quando selezioniamo stalloni e fattrici, la nostra filosofia è di mettere l’enfasi sul fatto che siano disponibili a lavorare ed abbiano una predisposizione alle attività sportive – equitazione ed endurance. Per una vera eccellenza nelle attività sportive abbiamo i nostri cavalli purosangue, non sono cose che chiediamo ai nostri Arabi. Cavalchiamo i nostri purosangue per la prima volta all’età di tre anni, mentre gli Arabi sono montati per la prima volta a quattro e lo stesso vale per le fattrici destinate alla riproduzione. ethical aspect to this: as animal breeders, we are responsible for the health of the animals we breed, and that health starts with choosing the mare and stallion for the mating. Don’t misunderstand me, even we will often sell foals, to name some, and we don’t know anything about their inclination to be ridden. But when selecting stallions and mares, our philosophy is to put some emphasis on a basic willingness to work and some predisposition for sports – riding and endurance. Really excellent sports performance is what we have the warmbloods for, that’s not something we require from our Arabians. We back our warmbloods for the first time when they are three years old, our Arabians when they are four, and it’s the same for the mares intended for breeding. They will have to pass a standard mare test lasting three and a half weeks, with daily evaluation by the training master and a final evaluation by judges. They are evaluated for their basic paces when ridden, and for loose jumping. For acceptance into the mare band of the state stud, we don’t require the Arabian mares to reach the same high scores we want to see in warmblood mares who are intended to produce sports horses. But of course, the mares are additionally selected for conformation, character, their behaviour as dams, and health. That’s something I take for granted. In addition, a breeding animal needs to display the characteristics of her or his breed and sex. In breeding, you get the normal kind of distribution: there are going to be some top horses, some quite poor ones, and the big middle field. We keep the top horses for our own breeding or sell them for good money – they are easy to place on the market. We have to think about that middle field. These horses need to be as marketable as possible, for a market as wide as possible. They need to be pretty and at the same time of a friendly disposition, easy to handle, and no problem to ride, because they need to be suitable for leisure time riders, who make up 95% of the buyers. I want to be able to tell them that the horse they are considering has been broken in and tested, and that he is suitable for certain areas of riding,

Per accettarle nel branco fattrici dell’allevamento di stato non chiediamo alle nostre Arabe di ottenere gli stessi alti punteggi che invece vogliamo vedere per le fattrici purosangue che intendiamo utilizzare nella riproduzione di cavalli sportivi. Naturalmente però, le fattrici sono ulteriormente selezionate sulla base di conformazione, carattere, comportamento alla monta e stato di salute. Questo per me è un assunto di base. In aggiunta a quanto detto prima, un animale da riproduzione deve esibire le caratteristiche della sua razza e del suo sesso. Nell’allevamento, si tende a trovare un normale equilibrio: ci saranno alcuni cavalli di punta, alcuni molto scarsi, e poi la grande massa fra i due estremi. I cavalli migliori sono trattenuti per il nostro allevamento oppure venduti nei vari sport con buoni guadagni – sono facili da piazzare sul mercato. Dobbiamo pensarci su per gli esemplari intermedi. Questi de-

vono essere il più possibile “vendibili”, per il mercato più vasto possibile. Devono essere belli ed avere al tempo stesso un animo amichevole, essere facili da gestire e non presentare problemi nel cavalcarli, perché devono essere adatti a cavalieri non-professionali, i quali compongono il 95 % dei compratori. Voglio sempre essere in grado di dire loro che il cavallo che stanno considerando è stato domato ed esaminato ed è adatto per certe aree dell’equitazione, ciò significa che non si tratta semplicemente di un cavallo per attività amatoriali, ma di un cavallo da cavalcare nel tempo libero.

She carries the foal and at the same time, often sustains the foal she has at foot. Why do I need to break a horse for riding whose task in life is going to be something else, not to be ridden? It would probably be enough to ride her offspring in order to find out about the transmitting qualities of the mare? Of course, stallions and geldings should be tested for their attitude towards riding. But among the small private breeders, nobody can afford to send every young horse in for performance testing – he would never recoup his expenses. von Velsen-Zerweck: We do not only think about the individual horse here in Marbach. What we think about is the population. Arabians were riding horses even in King Wilhelm I’s times, and they were riding and war horses as well as beasts of burden in the desert. We feel obliged to this heritage. For us, horses are riding horses, which is why we submit our young horses to this small testing. I

Ma tra i piccoli allevatori privati, nessuno può permettersi di spedirvi tutti i suoi giovani esemplari per farli esaminare – non recupererebbe mai le spese. von Velsen-Zerweck: Non pensiamo solo ai singoli individui qui a Marbach, pensiamo all’intera popolazione. Gli arabi cavalcavano i loro cavalli anche ai tempi di Guglielmo I e cavalcavano sia cavalli da guerra che bestie da soma nel deserto. Ci sentiamo obbligati da questa eredità. Per noi, tutti i cavalli sono da cavalcare ed è la ragione per cui sottoponiamo i nostri puledri a questo piccolo esame. Voglio che i nostri animali continuino ad essere adatti ad essere cavalcati. Se non li esaminiamo se non li selezioniamo per questo tratto, smetteremmo di fare attenzione ai geni che lo perpetuano, perdendo in questo modo tratti basilari del cavallo Arabo: vigore, resistenza, volontà ed abilità di esecuzione e la bellezza che è il risultato di tutto ciò. Ecco perché non è abbastanza esaminare solamente i castroni.

If we don’t test and select for this trait, we cease to watch out for the respective genes, losing basic traits of the Arabian horse that way: soundness, toughness, the will and the ability to perform, and the beauty resulting from all of this. That’s why it’s not enough just to test the geldings. Savier: In your opinion, then, it is not enough to regard Arabians as horses who keep up the tradition of their breed and their past, which does not necessarily mean they need to be ridden? After all, the great majority of Arabians is actually never ridden, and the important thing for many breeders and owners is just to keep the breed as original as possible. von Velsen-Zerweck: A breed is created from the requirements people have for it: the breeding goal. Arabians are the most ancient breed of riding horses in the world. The nomads of old required a nimble, sound, tough riding horse. Today, we use performance testing and careful selection of the horses we use for breeding. In the course of hundreds of years of daily practical use, at the same time selecting the best specimens, the breed evolved. If we wish to maintain Arabian horses in the spirit of this tradition, we need to use, test, and select them accordingly. It’s only by riding that I can find out whether the animals I produce are still suitable for this purpose. Populations change as soon as people change the breeding goal, like they do as soon as an ideal of beauty is suddenly more important than riding qualities. With Arabian horses, this is readily apparent. The desert Arabians of old were mostly not very beautiful according to today’s ideals, they were somewhat raw-boned utility horses. Our taste today runs towards highly refined, overly noble horses – the Bedouins of old might have chosen quite different types of horses for their purposes. If you use a horse as a riding horse, you tend to put much more emphasis on, for example, a correct conformation –because you don’t just have that aesthetic requirement, but you will simply want the horse to be sound and ridable for as long as

possible. For me, that’s a very important consideration. However, even we don’t have an entirely fault-free horse in our herd, of course. Savier: Which selection measures can you perceive for small breeders with just a few horses? von Velsen-Zerweck: Of course, selection is easier for us, as we have more horses and can select more strictly. The horses we don’t need for breeding, we sell at the prices that are customary in the market, which is about 10-15,000 Euros for a four-year-old that has been broken to riding. That’s not a winning particularly with the costs of staff we have. We calculate a minimum of 600 Euros per month for breaking a horse for riding. From our point of view, there is no reason why a mare should not be tested as a riding horse. In Marbach, the fillies three-and-a-half-year-old are carefully lounged and broken to the saddle during the winter. The test is in June, the mares are mated a short time before that and give birth to their first foal at age five. Exercising with a rider is not an undue strain for the mare, we rather observe positive effects from challenging the horses to exercise some, as it’s in accordance with their nature and ages-old purpose. For mares meant as broodmares, the first step in selection is to asses them when they are foals. There is a set procedure for that in Germany, with the conformation judged as well, since we want breeding animals who are as harmoniously and correctly

Savier: Quali misure di selezione suggerisce per i piccoli allevatori con soltanto pochi esemplari? von Velsen-Zerweck: Naturalmente il processo di selezione è più facile per noi, dato che abbiamo più animali. I cavalli che non ci sono necessari per la riproduzione sono venduti a prezzi contenuti sul mercato, che sono gli 10-15.000 Euro per un quattro anni che è stato addestrato ad essere cavalcato. Questo è un business modesto, specialmente con i costi del personale che abbiamo noi. Infatti calcoliamo un minimo di 600 Euro al mese per addestrare un cavallo a quel modo. Dal nostro punto di vista non c’è ragione per cui una fattrice non debba essere sottoposta ad esame come cavalcatura. A Marbach, le fattrici di tre anni e mezzo durante l’inverno sono lavorate alla corda e domate per la sella con cura. Il test si svolge a maggio, le fattrici vengono fatte montare poco tempo prima di allora e danno poi alla luce il loro primo puledro all’età di cinque anni. Fare esercizi con un cavaliere non è uno sforzo eccessivo per la fattrice, anzi osserviamo effetti positivi dovuti alla stimolazione del cavallo a fare un po’ di esercizio, il che, d’altra parte, è in accordo con la loro natura ed il loro scopo tramandato dalle ere passate. Per le fattrici destinate alla riproduzione, il primo passo nel processo di selezione è una valutazione condotta mentre sono ancora giovanissime. Esiste una procedura prestabilita in Germania per questo, con un giudizio anche sulla conformazione, dato che vogliamo animali da riproduzione che siano di

costituzione quanto più possibile armoniosa e corretta. Perfino una fattrice esclusivamente dedicata alla riproduzione riceve benefici da una corretta conformazione, in quanto la aiuterà a superare la gravidanza senza inconvenienti. Viene poi effettuata la registrazione delle giovani fattrici nello Stud Book – a questo scopo vengono giudicate anche le andature di base, oltre alla conformazione ed al tipo (ovviamente rispetto alle caratteristiche proprie del sesso e della razza). Dopo questa registrazione, le fattrici sono esaminate per le loro prestazioni con cavaliere “in groppa”. Ogni allevatore serio dovrebbe arrivare perlomeno fin qui. Ogni allevatore di animali dovrebbe sentirsi eticamente obbligato a produrre animali che siano vigorosi, capaci delle attività proprie della loro specie e potenzialmente destinati ad una lunga vita. Next is the registration of the young mares in the studbook – for that, basic paces are judged as well as conformation and type (understood as the characteristics of the respective breed and sex). After the registration, the mares are tested for their riding performance. Every serious breeder should make this much of an effort. Every breeder of animals should feel ethically obliged to produce animals that are sound, able to perform, and potentially long-lived. Savier: Your ancient lines here, however, are not intended to decay to a museal state? von Velsen-Zerweck: We are carefully trying to keep in contact with today’s tastes. Our breeding philosophy, however, definitely outranks all other considerations. We are concerned with the beauty of our horses, of course, but not in today’s exaggerated sense. Centuries ago, they would idealize their horses when painting them; today, they do it by editing photographs – or the horses themselves, even – and all of that just to obtain something that

Tuttavia la nostra filosofia allevatoriale prende il sopravvento su qualsiasi altra considerazione. Ci occupiamo della bellezza dei nostri cavalli, naturalmente, ma non nel senso esagerato d’oggigiorno. Secoli fa, nel dipingere i propri cavalli si tendeva ad idealizzarli, oggi lo si fa “truccando” le fotografie – o addirittura i cavalli stessi – e tutto questo solo per ottenere qualcosa che si adattasse e si adatti ai desideri della gente. Lavorando un po’ nello stesso schema, per noi tenerci in contatto con la scena dell’Arabo significa includere nei nostri programmi allevatoriali nomi illustri come Al Lahab, in modo che i compratori interessati possano trovarli nei pedigree dei nostri cavalli. Ma se riusciamo a trovare, giusto per fare un nome, stalloni discendenti da Bairactar, daremmo loro la nostra preferenza, anche se in quel momento non fossero altrettanto di moda. Ritengo sia importante mantenere gli antichi lignaggi, e mantenerli come erano nel passato, che poi è il modo in cui la

fits peoples’ wishes. Working within that frame, keeping in touch with the Arabian scene does mean, for us, to include in our breeding illustrious names such as Al Lahab, so interested buyers will find them in the pedigrees of our horses. But if we can find, to name one, stallions from Bairactar lines, we are going to prefer them, even if they are not such much en vogue at that time. I believe that it’s important to maintain the ancient lines – and to maintain them the way they used to be, which is the way people expect them to be. That way, we have horses that can be crossbred with any breeder’s own population, and every breeder can go on mating the products in accordance to his own breeding philosophy. It is probably going to take some time for us to become established in Arabian breeding again. A horse generation spans 8 years, I will probably be here for 25 years – 3 generations is not that much. I am highly suspicious of quick successes. They are just a flash in the pan, so to speak, and don’t usually yield much for the next generation.

Savier: Do you perceive any specific problems in Arabian horse breeding? von Velsen-Zerweck: Our experience with stallions we have here temporarily, or we get semen from for freezing, tells us that ferBoiselle tility in Arabian stallions is an issue. Things seem to be quite OK with our own stallions. It looks as if this were mainly genetically determined and not just a question of stable management. In the Arabian horse population as a whole, I fail to detect some overall breeding programme. Things taking place in world-wide Arabian breeding don’t always comply with the basic principles of good animal breeding for me. Certain studs and small populations do a good job, of course. Animal breeding, however, consists of performance testing and selection, the best animals are used for further breeding, and that way the population as a whole is influenced. I am often considered an advocate of the “pure doctrine”, but that’s quite how I see myself. We can talk about breeding goals and breeding programmes, about the outer appearance of performance testing and of the evaluation of transmitting abilities. But all of the above need to exist and be done, I am fully convinced of that.
Per quanto riguarda l’intera popolazione di cavalli PSA, non riesco a percepire un programma globale di allevamento. Certe cose che accadono nell’allevamento di PSA in tutto il mondo, secondo me, non sempre rispettano i principi di base di un buon allevamento di animali. Ovviamente, alcuni Allevamenti e certe piccole popolazioni si comportano ottimamente. Tuttavia l’allevamento di animali consiste nei test delle prestazioni e di selezione su quella base, con i migliori esemplari che vengono poi utilizzati per ulteriore procreazione e, in questo modo, si influenza l’intera popolazione. È un peccato. La WAHO dovrebbe prendere posizione chiaramente su questo argomento, poiché l’allevamento sistematico di animali ha certamente qualcosa a che vedere con la protezione degli animali nel mondo reale. A volte mi si considera una sostenitrice della “pura dottrina”, che è esattamente come vedo me stessa. Possiamo discutere di obiettivi e programmi allevatoriali, dell’aspetto esteriore degli esami delle prestazioni e della valutazione della capacità di trasmettere caratteri ereditari. Savier: Substituting the yearly Arabian Horse Show according to ECAHO rules, there is a „Day of the Arabian Horse“ in Marbach now. Do you see a chance for this show to establish a profile of its own and become part of the selective measures employed for the breed? von Velsen-Zerweck: In staff council, there was the question of whether we should go on having Arabian shows here at all – because again and again, the horses are treated so very unacceptably. During the show, there were trainers who would retreat behind the tent stables to give their stallions a good beating before entering the ring – while we teach our trainees never to beat a horse. Of

course, the same can be observed in warmblood sports, but still, the Arabian scene does not enjoy the best of reputations, not even with our staff. Instead,what we present nowadays in cooperation with the German Breeding Association for Arabian Horses (VZAP) is a mares and foals inspection within the frame of the public „Day of the Arabian Horse“. This way, the numerous spectators who had come to see our ridden and in-hand Arabians in the arena also had the opportunity to see for themselves the current state of breeding in Germany and of the selection criteria used. For the owners of the horses presented in Marbach stud on that day, that was an enormously successful demonstration advertising their own studs. More than two thirds of the horses presented also earned a premium. The horses were presented without make-up, unclipped, and with no ruffle or excitement. That way, the natural character of these Arabians could be expressed. This is the direction we wish to take for the future, and we also have some more ideas for that.

In questo modo, i numerosi spettatori che erano venuti a vedere i nostri arabi cavalcati e in fila nell'arena hanno anche avuto l'opportunità di constatare l'attuale stato dell’allevamento in Germania e dei criteri di selezione utilizzati. Per i proprietari dei cavalli presentati nella struttura di Marbach quel giorno, fu una occasione di enorme successo per pubblicizzare i propri stalloni. Quest'anno, oltre due terzi dei cavalli presentati hanno anche guadagnato un premio. I cavalli sono stati presentati senza trucco, senza tagli e arricciature o eccitazione. Così si potrebbe esprimere il carattere naturale di questi arabi. Questa è la direzione che vogliamo prendere per il futuro, e abbiamo anche altre idee per questo.

breeds entering Arabia from the east, west and south. During the great conquests of the 7th-8th centuries, the Arabs, moving westwards, encountered Berber horses in Africa, and then the aforementioned breeds were mixed — that is, horses from southern Arabia with horses from northern Africa. It should be assumed that such horses came to Spain and southern Europe. After the conquests ended, with the rise of

the caliphates and kingdoms, Arabia itself remained on the margins of the great Arab-Muslim empire. The Bedouins, on the other hand, lived their old way of life, keeping their traditions and customs. It was also then (around the 13th century) that the flow of foreign blood to the Arabian horse breed probably ended. In the following centuries, Bedouins and their horses only migrated across the deserts of Arabia: Central Arabia, Syria, Mesopotamia and Palestine. These movements were conducive to maintaining a uniform breed of Arabian horses. In the specific environment of the Arabian Peninsula, the characteristics that distinguish this breed were formed: bravery, beauty, dry tissue, speed and the typical gentleness of character. Europeans traveling in Arabia between the thirteenth and nineteenth centuries agree that the best Arabian horses can be found among members of the Anaza tribe, once nomadic in the interior of Arabia, who left the Nejdu deserts and settled in the desert areas of Syria and northern Arabia. Among the Bedouins, the descendants of the former nomadic horse breeders, various ancient traditions concerning the genealogy of Arabian horses are still alive today. They are mentioned by
the first European explorer of Arabia, Niebhur (ca 1779), as well as by Count Wacław Seweryn Rzewuski, who wandered in the deserts of Arabia at the beginning of the 19th century and left the famous manuscript from this journey, which is a unique source of ethnographic knowledge about the life of the Bedouins and the horses they bred. It has undoubtedly been established that the type of the modern Arabian horse was developed at the beginning of the 7th century and was directly related to the rise of the Muslim religion. On the borderlands of the Republic of Poland The vast territory of the Republic of Poland and related interests, starting from the 15th century, inevitably led to a confrontation with the aggressive Ottoman Empire, which also included the Arabian Peninsula. Military and trade contacts in peacetime made it possible to import first oriental and then Arabian horses to Poland. Arabian horse breeding from the beginning of its existence in Poland has been distinguished by special care and diligence. www.tuttoarabi.com - TUTTO ARABI | 211

The dam lines were (and are) carefully cared for by Polish breeders. Among the 15 dam lines that are present in the Polish breeding program, five are the heritage of the famous Polish Borderlands studs, dating back to the second half of the 18th century. This extraordinary continuity, despite the historical cataclysms that swept through our country, invariably prompts us to wonder why Poles valued Arabian horses so much that for many generations, despite wars, plunder and, above all, the lack of state sovereignty, they maintained and even successfully developed the breeding of these horses. As a result of many generations of breeding work, a type of Polish Arabian was created, significantly different from the original Arabians brought from the desert. The refinement and consolidation of features have become a characteristic of Polish Arabians, significantly different from their ancestors and Arabians in the so-called Egyptian type. The foundation for the type and tradition of Polish breeding and its vision is basing on and cultivating dam lines of females born in these studs.
Biała Cerkiew studs The oldest Arabian stud farm of the Borderlands was the one established in 1778 by the Grand Hetman of the Crown, Franciszek Ksawery Branicki, in the Szamrajówka chutor, belonging to the Biała Cerkiew estate in the Ukraine. Its many years of operation left in Polish breeding just one (recovered with great difficulty after World War I, and then also after World War II), but extremely valuable, dam line: Szamrajówka, 1810 bred by Biała Cerkiew. Sławuta dam lines (Antoniny and Gumniska) Among the studs of the Borderlands, the effects of which have survived in the form of dam or sire lines, the stud of the Sanguszko princes, originating from Sławuta, definitely stood out. for horses to Arabia. From that moment, until 1945, the Sanguszko breeding was carried out invariably in the Arabian direction, i.e. for 141 years (also in Antoniny and Gumniska near Tarnów). The number of their breeding was significant, which allowed for the selection of the best horses and the production and then preserving of entire families. 12 dam lines were established there: “the oldest of the Sławuta families was descended from a mare without a name, born around 1790, which survived until the 1930s, reaching 10 generations, but no longer exists.”* From among the Sławuta families, there are currently four in Polish breeding: Szweykowska b. c. 1800, Milordka b. c. 1810, Wołoszka b. c. 1810, Ukrainka b. c. 1815. Equally important is the heritage of the Sławuta breeding in establishing sire lines. Until now, two lines have survived, which have issued many generations and are continued in Poland and successfully in the world. They are lines descending from the stallions: Ilderim or.ar. imp. 1900 to Sławuta, Ibrahim d.b. imp. 1907 to Antoniny. Jarczowce dam lines (and Jezupol) In the interwar period, the leading role in domestic breeding was played by horses derived from three mares brought from Arabia in 1845 by Juliusz Dzieduszycki, i.e. Gazella d.b., Mlecha d.b. and Sahara d.b. The Dzieduszycki stud in Jarczowce, much older, dating back to 1791, adopted the Arabian-only direction in 1845. It was then that Juliusz Dzieduszycki brought seven desert stallions and four mares from Arabia, including the three mentioned above - as it turned out - founders of dam lines that are so important today. The stud in Jarczowce (then continued in Jezupol) had operated for 73 years, that is until 1918. The well-reproduced Jarczowce dam lines are an extremely valuable breeding legacy of the Dzieduszycki family. Jarczowce also started two sire lines, of which one has survived to this day: Krzyżyk d.b. (born in 1869, imp. 1876 Jarczowce).

The end of breeding Arabian horses in the Borderlands came in 1918, when the studs, devastated during the Great War, were, along with the horses, completely destroyed (burned, murdered, demolished, looted) by the Bolsheviks. Only thanks to their export to other regions or countries, the priceless breeding material from many excellent studs has survived to this day. Including the most outstanding ones, i.e. Sławuta, Antoniny, Biała Cerkiew and Jarczowce with Jezupol. This allowed, after the rebirth of the Polish state, to start rebuilding breeding basing on the old families of Sławuta (and Antoniny), Biała

Cerkiew, Jarczowce (and Jezupol). During the partitions, on the Polish lands of the Russian Empire, the only existing state stud, founded by Tsar Alexander I in 1817 in Janów Podlaski, contrary to popular belief, did not breed Arabian horses. Thus, all Arabian farms in Poland at that time were in private hands. Stud books In the studs of Polish magnates, from the second half of the 18th century, breeding was conducted in a modern way, establishing stud books and registers of purebred horses. It is thanks to this that Polish Arabians have such deeply documented pedigrees today. The need to use a brave and reliable mount in war and the problem of communication in vast areas during the period of peace forced the need to breed Arabian horses which were strong and sound, which in turn led to the extraordinary stamina of Polish Arabian horses. Polish breeders also understood this. After regaining independence, already in 1926, in place of the former war training, they launched performance trials on horse racing tracks. Until recently, these attempts were the basis for the selection of elite material in Polish breeding. Until the 1970s, the population of Arabian horses in the world was not strictly defined. Different countries kept books and registers, but they were not kept on a uniform basis, which often led to misunderstandings and limited export opportunities, as well as broadly understood international cooperation. Even in the 1960s, well-known English breeders, Patricia and Sonia Lindsay, bought Arabian horses in Poland and only after they were entered in the English stud books, that is they were recognized as Arabians in Great Britain, they could be re-exported to the USA due to the fact that the American stud book did not recognize the Polish stud book. It is difficult to say whether this was due to the reluctance of the Americans to cooperate with the authorities of a hostile communist regime, or simply because of the business calculations that could be attributed to them, especially at a time when they were getting their own breeding on their feet. In July 1967, at the initiative of the British Arab Horse Society, the first Arab Horse Breeders Conference was organized in London, attended by representatives of Great Britain, the USA, the USSR, Sweden, South Africa, Denmark, Spain, Portugal, the German Federal Republic, the Netherlands, Jordan and Israel. Despite the invitation, there was no Polish delegation whose attitude of the then Polish authorities towards Arabian horse breeding was negative. It was at that time that the official

Gomułka propaganda tried to convince the public that horses eat oats needed for pigs, so as unnecessary parasites — Arabian horses, had to be liquidated. The absence of the Polish delegation at the conference in London was very unfavorable for our breeding, because at this conference a public debate began on the type of Arabian horse and the rules of keeping stud books. Despite the negative attitude of the Polish authorities to this initiative, Polish interests were officially represented by Stefan Zamoyski, a member of the British Arab Horse Society. The same Zamoyski, thanks to whom Poland owes the recovery of Polish Arabians taken by the Germans from occupied Poland. And the same Zamoyski, who was forbidden by the Polish state to return to his homeland, had taken all his property and hope for life among his countrymen, was now fighting for the good of his country and Polish breeding. Thanks to his involvement, Polish interests were constantly and effectively represented. The result of the first Arabian horse breeders’ conference was the decision to create an international association of Arabian horse breeders. However, it was in the 1960s that the lucrative export of Polish Arabians began, which made the then authorities see the source of priceless currencies in Arabian horses. At the next conference, which was held in 1970, also in London, the Polish delegation was present this time. Materials were previously prepared to present a position on the important issue of recognizing our horses as purebred, and thus the international recognition of the Polish stud book. The most important point of this stance was to oppose the theory promoted at the time that an Arabian horse can only be considered a horse whose pedigree in all lines is derived from the original Arabians imported from the desert (abbreviated as: d.b.). Such was not acceptable for Poland, because many of our horses, the pedigree of which could not be derived in all lines from d.b. horses at that time, had a proven descent up to 15 generations or more, i.e. around 150 years back. It was a phenomenon, incomprehensible to the world, because the existence of such deep pedigrees was a phenomenon in Arabian horse breeding in the world and it concerned almost exclusively Polish horses, hence the postulate not to recognize these pedigrees for Polish breeding was very dangerous. An unfavorable stance towards Polish breeding was presented despite the participation of Polish horses in western, and in particular, American breeding. Apart from numerous exports, incorporated into breeding (but illegally) were: the son of Ofir, Witeź II, the stallion Lotnik, as well as Iwonka III and Wierna with her offspring, the two-year-old Werra and year-old Wierka, taken to the

United States in 1945 by the US Army. Perhaps the fact of looting the mentioned horses was also the reason for the fear of recognizing the Polish stud book, and thus the strengthening of Polish claims to these horses, as the Polish government issued an (ineffective) protest against their looting. Although the pedigrees of the above-mentioned horses can be traced to d.b. horses, but in the pedigree of the highly valued Skowronek, we have the dam line of the mare Iliniecka 1815, bred in Sławuta. It is difficult to find a sire with an older, more proven pedigree than the one presented by Skowronek, and therefore also his offspring, because it is Polish Arabian horses that have the deepest pedigrees in the world, although it is often impossible to prove the origin of the d.b. Many registers and studbooks were lost during the wars that passed through Poland in the 19th and 20th centuries, but it was their use that also influenced the fact that Polish horses represent the purest type of Arabian horse and display a reliable power of inheriting the characteristics of their breed. An additional argument was the influence that Polish Arabian horses had on world breeding through stallions exported to other countries, apart from Skowronek and Witeż II - Ursus, Van Dyck, Wyrwidąb or Towarzysz Pancerny, and then Bask. WAHO — the definition of a purebred Arabian horse For the second conference, which took place in August 1970 in London, the Polish delegation prepared and equipped itself with the substantive foundations and arguments regarding the purity of Polish Arabian pedigrees developed by prof. Witold Pruski. The conference was attended by a Polish delegation composed of: K. Molendowa (PASB editor), A. Krzyształowicz and Z. Brylski. As before, Polish arguments were actively supported by Stefan Zamoyski, acting on behalf of the organizer. The result of the conference was the establishment of an international organization under the name of the World Arabian Horse Organization (WAHO). The eight-person Temporary Committee was composed of a representative of Poland, director of Janów Podlaski Stud, Andrzej Krzyształowicz, who then served for many years as a member of the WAHO Executive Committee. The international rules for keeping stud books as well as the rules for the identification and entry of horses in the books were established during several successive meetings of the WAHO Executive Committee. International regulations have been developed gradually, introducing the obligation to mark horses’ blood types and carrying out detailed checks of the studbooks in individual countries. After all the conditions were met, the studbooks were recognized in subsequent countries. Most of the Polish postulates
regarding the recognition of Polish dam lines were soon fulfilled. Currently, an Arabian horse is a horse entered in a stud book recognized by the World Arabian Horse Organization. The Arabian horse population was closed under these books. This means that a country that does not have its own stud book may establish it, but may only enter horses entered in the stud book already recognized by WAHO. The right to enter, of course, applies to the formal side. The entry itself does not decide what an Arabian horse should look like. WAHO defines the Arabian horse standard as a certain Arabian ideal that breeders strive for. The breeders who shape this breed will decide what the Arabian horses of the 21st century will look like. Currently, it is difficult to say whether the Arabian breed will manage to maintain its most valuable breeding traits, i.e. stamina and beauty, and especially the balance between these traits that is not easy to maintain. What we have been observing in the last 20 years in world breeding does not fill us with optimism. The divergence of the Arabian horse type into the show (decorative) and racing (mini Thoroughbred) horse is not conducive to the breed’s development. Bi-direction in breeding is contrary to the Polish breeding program. Polish breeding, as the only one, has developed a model of a harmonious combination of beauty and stamina, which is supported by the stamina trials conducted continuously since 1926 on the racetrack. Maintaining the balance between beauty and stamina is the only chance for Polish Arabian horses to maintain their identity and high quality developed over generations. * W. During four days, starting with Handtrail & Rookie classes in all disciplines, from Western over Classic
with Show Jumping up to the ECAHO Pleasure classes with the highest numbers of entries. A large wellknown showground south of Vienna, two excellent Sport arenas with solid stables, give the participants the chance to arrive earlier to settle down and practice. Nice sightseeing in famous city of Vienna is a positive side aspect!
