Scottsdale THE G REAT EST HORSE SHO W ON EA RTH!
............................................................... Every year, we look forward to Scottsdale Arabian Horse Show with great enthusiasm and anticipation. While there were some shows in the Middle East and in parts of the southern hemisphere being held, in the United States, the Scottsdale show marks the beginning of the show season. With many of the shows canceled last year, due to the pandemic, this year, people were more excited than ever to gather and celebrate our beloved Arabian horses. Extraordinary measures were taken by the organizers to assure everyone’s safety and to comply with the strict health regulations. However, even the strong precautions did not diminish the thrill of competition, the jubilation of victories, the pride of breeders and owners, or the beauty and talent of the horses. Perhaps the number one reason the Scottsdale Arabian Horse Show has earned the name, “The Greatest Horse Show On Earth”, is that it truly offers something fun for everyone. There are a wide variety of halter and performance classes offered for youth and amateur competitors, as well as classes in virtually every equestrian discipline for professionals, ranging from reining, cutting, and working ranch horses, to dressage, jumping, western, English, and more. This year marked the show’s 66 Anniversary! Everyone was just happy to be able to attend the show and participate - more or less - as usual. Although there were fewer than normal commercial vendors, the number of horses entered was only slightly less than in past years. One interesting change was the venue for the International Halter and Breeding classes, which were moved to the evening session. Also, they were held outdoors at the Wendell area, which allowed for social distancing and a much larger arena for the horses to show their movement. Each year, the competition has a unique energy. Even with the travel restrictions, there was still a huge international influence in the Halter and Breeding classes. Marwan Al Shaqab continued his dominance by siring four of the top champions including both the Champion and Reserve Champion Senior Stallions, Soul Of Marwan AS and Rhan Al Shahania. Emerald J sired three of the top champion, while RFI Farid and Sultan GK each sired two of the top Champions. Once again, Brazilian and South American breeders were at the forefront with their spectacular horses and breeders from the Middle East also took numerous top honors. SHOWS AND EVENTS
Still, the American dream lives on through the efforts of the “grassroots” breeders, the small breeders in the United States, who pour their hearts and souls into their breeding programs and who produced some of the most stunning and talented horses of the show. Small breeders, although often overshadowed by others, remain the life blood of the Arabian breed in America. On the following pages, we highlight some of the top Halter and Breeding Champions, as well as a few of the top Performance Champions in a variety of disciplines, which demonstrate the exquisite beauty, talents and versatility of the Arabian horse. The dates for next year’s show are already set: February 17-27, 2022. We invite you to make plans now to join us. For additional information please visit our website at: www. scottsdaleshow.com
The Rahere Bronze, a perpetual trophy donated by Alex Chrys, created by Wendy Morris Tank, was presented to the Scottsdale Junior Champion Colt, by the Lois McCrea family. The bronze honors Lois for her 100 year birthday and for her 66 years of dedication to the Arabian Horse.
............................................................... Editorial Note: Due to health and safety restrictions and guidlines, facemasks were required at all times on the Scottsdale show grounds with the exception of handlers and riders while competing in the show arenas. Any violation would result in penalties for the show. We thank the participants for their support and for following the guidlines set for the show by health and welfare authorities.

Haras de Montpezat is a modern and dynamic European Centre with high quality facilities. It is located in Beaucaire, a small town on the Rhône river in the south of France. This area is a perfect strategic location because of its weather and close distance to other important places: the Camargue region on the coast, 80 km from Marseille, 200 km from Nice, 500 km from Milan, 650 km from Paris and 300 km from Barcelona. The location of the farm is ideal from the point of view of close proximity to some major shows as well as the shipment of fresh and frozen semen, which cannot exceed 24 hours throughout Europe. Taking all this into consideration, Haras de Montpezat is perfectly located. Haras de Montpezat was founded as a breeding farm and a training centre and it is open to receive new horses from all over the world. As you can see in the pictures, the Centre extends over 35 hectares and has got great quality facilities.

During our visit, we met Mr. Daniel Souppat, who is the Manager of the stud farm and we interviewed him about the goals of Haras de Montpezat. Tutto Arabi: Daniel, can you tell us something about you. Daniel Souppat: I was born in Lyon, where my grandfather had horses and a big passion for these animals. As I was growing up, my passion for horses also grew. I started with buying a Polish mare (bloodlines of Probat, Eukaliptus), then a Russian mare, G Meneska (Ménes and Kajora), who had

the same mother as Gazal Al Shaqab. I have bred 25 horses over the years with the help of my wife Christiane, who takes care of the stud when I am
STUD working away. I have always been passionate about riding. “The one who has an Arabian horse has not only got a horse but a dear friend.” Personally, I have been a breeder and an ACA member (Association Nationale Française du Cheval Arabe) for 30 years. I have organized many national and international shows. In 7 years, Vichy International Arabians Horse Show gathered horses from 15 countries around the world. After that, I founded an Association (A.C.A.S.) to organize other shows in France. I am also a National Judge, DC and Ringmaster with a lot of experience all over the world and I hope that this can help me and everyone who works at Haras de Montpezat to do this wonderful job for a long time. I can support the growing of the farm and improving the genetics of our products year after year.
TA: Today, we are here at the marvellous Haras de Montpezat. We know that you have built it. Can you tell us the story behind it? DS: Yes, it is true. This Arabian horse farm in France started in 2012 and was built by me - as I am a builder - utilizing all my passion and the best technics and innovations in the field of construction. TA: What are you working on now? What are your goals as a Manager? DS: The construction was finished in 2013 and since then, I have been managing the enterprise. I would like to thank Sheikh Mohammed Bin Saud Al Qasimi for his trust. As this is a large stud, at the beginning we acted prudently. What I would like to see is good results and to achieve them, we are working hard with our team. My goal is to run the Stud Farm with:

THREE TIMES GOLD MEDAL CHAMPION COLT 2019
Family, passion and... Arabian horses by Giorgia Mauri z photos by Alessio Azzali, Antonio Caracciolo, Nicoletta Abelli
On a beautiful Sunday in March I visited Scah Arabians, the breeding farm owned by Stefano and Tiziana Colombo. Their enthusiasm and smile welcomed me as a special guest. Their gaze was always bright when it rested on their horses and when together they talked about their story, of love and breeding. “We are a small breeding farm which made its first entry into the show ring in 2007. We are proud of our achievements to date. Our first broodmare, Pyrea (Psytadel x Priscilla) won a gold and a silver medal. The same applies to her first product Pascal, son of Ajman Moniscione. Another pearl of our breeding farm is Creola (Ajman Moniscione x Cleopatra by Brianz Xaver) who debuted as a futurity with a gold medal in 3 consecutive shows (Boario, Travagliato, Verona) and then continued in the following years always qualifying in the championship and always obtaining a medal. Asyah Scah (Hasman Gyo x Amanthea Moniscione) is another broodmare that has given us much satisfaction
(in 2015 she was bronze at Bergamo show and silver at Verona, in 2016 at the Italian National Championship she was silver and champion fillies at the Italian Cup Italy, in 2020 she was Italian national championship silver broodmare). Every year we breed 5/6 broodmares paying great attention to our breeding programme. We rely not only on famous stallions but we also like to gamble using young stallions that in our humble opinion have the characteristics we are looking for: correct type, correct legs, movement, head. We personally follow all the phases of breeding, especially births, which are the most exciting expression of our passion. In the last year we have been assisted by our daughter Dania

who is showing great empathy with our horses as well as a mix of passion and attitude. Needless to say, this makes us even happier to breed. We try to let our horses “be horses”, allowing them to stay in the paddock all day long, living freely as it should be in nature. Knowing how to wait patiently is certainly one of the lessons passed on to us by our Arabian horses. The 11-month gestation period is an incessant chase

of emotions: when the pregnancy is confirmed you are just happy, then... curiosity, desire, fear, impatience... And you hope that things will go in the best way and that the breeding choices linked to that cross will give the desired result. The first goal is the magic of birth, which emphasises all the feelings. From that moment on, all the expectations on the new born arise” .

At your breeding farm you have not only home bred horses... “Yes, indeed. We are very proud to announce a new addition, coming directly from Michalow Stud. In her pedigree “El Dorada” and “Marwan al Shaqab”. We had the great chance to acquire a part of Michalow’s heritage purchasing this 4 years old mare in foal to Empire: El Dorenna. Three weeks ago she gave us a beautiful filly, Dorada Scah (Empire x El Dorenna).

Breeding for us, however, means responsibility of choice and love for horses. By breeding them, we learn to consciously grow together with them and by trying to improve their well-being, our quality of life also improves. We have made a life choice dictated by the desire to retire to a quiet corner of nature and be fascinated by watching our horses free and quiet. Why Purebred Arabian Horses? Obviously because they are the most beautiful". q

The first edition of the Katara International Arabian Horse Festival (KIAHF), held under the patronage of HH the Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, concluded on a resplendent note yesterday. Some of the finest purebred Arabian show horses competed in the championships of the prestigious Title Show. Stallions, mares, colts, fillies, and yearling, finalists in their respective classes, graced the arena, impressing judges and spectators with their graceful trot and absolutely gorgeous looks. Noft Alnayfat, a senior mare, and Sundown K.A, a senior stallion, Arabians
owned by Sheikh Jassim bin Khalifa H A AL-Thani, proudly strutted off with the championship titles in their respective categories. HE Prof. Khalid bin Ibrahim Al-Sulaiti, General Manager, Katara, and Chairman of the Organizing Committee, Katara International Arabian Horse Festival, welcomed a number of Their Excellencies led by His Excellency Salah bin Ghanem Al Ali, Minister of Culture and Sports and heads of diplomatic missions to Qatar. They included HE the Minister www.tuttoarabi.com - TUTTO ARABI | 85

Plenipotentiary Mr. Ali bin Saad Al-Naghmoush AlQahtani, Acting Chargé d’Affaires at the Embassy of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, and His Excellency the Minister Plenipotentiary Mr. Nasser Saqr Al-Ghanim - Deputy Ambassador of the State of Kuwait. HE Prof. Al-Sulaiti expressed great satisfaction that the Festival, which featured a total prizemoney of
QAR13,000,000, one of the highest for an event of this type, had concluded successfully. He also noted that the participation of 12 countries in the very first edition of the KIAHF was an outstanding achievement. HE pointed out that the highest standards of integrity and fairness were upheld during the Title Show, as the entire proceedings were held in accordance with the standards and rules set by European Conference of Arab Horse Organizations (ECAHO). He also thanked all the sponsors, partners, officials, artists, and exhibitors at the Festival for their valuable contribution. The officials, judges, and members of the Disciplinary Committee were also honored by the General Manager. Art lovers were in for a special treat. AlBahie, the Qatar-based auction house, held an auction titled ‘Al Aseel.’ On the block were various pieces of equinerelated artwork by international artists. The five-day Festival had featured several equine-related exhibitions and a postal exhibition. Besides the impressive Title Show, spectators were treated to a taste of Qatari heritage. They were introduced to Hariri Al Shaqab, the poster-child for KIAHF

and a world-famous stallion that has won numerous international awards and championships. Audiences were also presented with a remarkable light and sound laser show accompanied by a parade of Arabians and their riders dressed in traditional costume. Spectacular fireworks display and illuminated drones featured horse and rider along Katara’s waterfront, against the backdrop of traditional dhows. A brightly-lit message welcoming people back to the next edition of KIAHF next year, brought the Festival to a fitting finish. The Festival was held by Cultural Village Foundation, Katara, in cooperation with the Qatar Equestrian Federation, Qatar Racing and Equestrian Club, and Qatar Foundation. More than 300 purebred Arabians were registered for the Title Show, the highpoint of the Festival. Of these, more than 200 horses had met the stipulated requirements and will hence participate in the prestigious Show. These figures rose further, as registrations were made open for horses qualifying in the 23rd Qatar National Arabian Horse Show, that was held the week before from 22 – 26 January. The overwhelming participation
necessitates that the Tile Show dates were amended to ensure optimum conditions of competition. The Show now was a 4-day event, instead of three as previously announced. The Organizing Committee of KIAHF is also geared up to conduct an auction show on 29 January. The auction featured only those purebred Arabians that

have already qualified for participation in the Title Show. It was conducted at Katara’s beautiful esplanade. His Excellency Prof. Khalid Bin Ibrahim AlSulaiti, General Manager, Katara and Chairman of the Organizing Committee, Katara International Arabian Horse Festival, said: “We are pleased with the remarkable response we have received from horse owners and breeders. Registrations have been received from the Middle East and Europe, including Belgium, Kuwait, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, and Qatar. “The Auction is being held as a pre-event to the festival and will offer horse owners an occasion to invest in fine purebred Arabians. It will also present them with the opportunity to be part of the Title Show if they have not registered already. Through the festival, we endeavor to boost the confidence and pride of owners and breeders by presenting them with opportunities to participate in prestigious Arabian horse shows and associated events.” Qatar has earned a place of global distinction in conducting such shows of repute. The nation has previously hosted 29 international shows and

championships for purebred Arabians. This was the first time the premier show was hosted at Cultural Village Foundation, Katara. The Title Show had some distinct features: it was the first event of its kind being held by the waterfront, and the total prize money of QAR 13,000,000 was one the highest awarded for such an event. In addition to the Title Show of exquisite Arabians, the

Sharjah International
by Fabio Brianzoni z photos by Simone Bergamaschi
It is always a great pleasure and we are honored to be present with our magazine Tutto Arabi at the International Arabian Horse Festival in Sharjah, a place well known in the world as the ancient emirate of the United Arabian Emirates and the Cultural Capital of the Arab World (nominated by UNESCO in 1998) where the tradition blends very well with modernity. The event took place at the Sharjah Equestrian & Racing Club which is the best place to host a unique event like this. It has been the first equestrian club in the UAE, established in 1982 by the will of H.H. Sheikh Dr. Sultan Bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Member of Supreme Council Ruler of Sharjah.

The 22nd Sharjah International Arabian Horse Festival lasted three days (4, 5 and 6 of March 2021) and was indeed a continuation of the success of previous editions. As always SERC organizers did their best to ensure that everyone felt welcome and that everything was perfectly prepared and sanitized. The VIP tables left space to single chairs to maintain the space allowed due to Covid-19. The weather was also very welcoming and the atmosphere of the show was very pleasant as always. The show gathered many horses - 282 to be exact. All of the highest quality and important pedigrees. The director of the

show Mr. Sultan Mohammed Khalifa Al Yahyaie managed and organized the Festival from the beginning impeccably with his team of the SERC association, who we congratulate. The show took place in the outstanding outdoor arena which was very well prepared to handle the large amount of horses that entered the show grounds and was also beautifully decorated with the Sharjah Airport logo - the main sponsor of the show - and the 2021 in the center of the arena written with flowers. The show was judged by the international panel of judges: Mr. Ahmed Abdelrazek (Egypt), Mrs. Pilar Cavero Pino (Spain), Mr. Jerzy Bialobok (Poland), Mr. Fausto Scanzi (Italy), Mr. Koenrad Detailleur (Belgium), Mr. Tomas Rombauer (Hungary) and Mr. Eric Gear (France). Ring Master Dr. Abdelwahab Ben Ali Amira who worked flawless as always. During the three days of the show the 12 categories were held in harmony, almost all divided into A and B classes. But the real competition, the cheering of the public has tripled with the championship. This year, however, I noticed new farm names emerging among the elite of historical breeders. This is the result of many years of breeding sacrifices which, however, are starting to bring satisfaction to the smallest breeders. The remote streaming was by the experienced and longstanding “Arabianessence”. The many cameras in the ing were by Arabian HSR. The most important local TV “Sharjah Sports TV” sent its reporter Mr. Zakaria Mestoui, who covered the event and interviewed the gold medal-winning breeders and owners one by one. It was a great pleasure to attend the 22nd Sharjah International Arabian Horse Festival. It was a wonderful event which I obviously hope to return to next year.

Interview with
CEDES BAKKER by Talitha Bakker z photos by Tutto Arabi archive
In the middle of the Covid-times we were able to meet with (former) Arabian horse breeder, enthusiast and judge Cedes Bakker and asked him a few questions.
TA: You have been involved in Arabian Horses since you were young. Do you think the looks of the Arabian horses has changed over the years? CB: I think at this moment we are losing the vision of breeding a complete horse. Every horse is the same and you can judge them on the same way either its warmblood, welsh or Shetland pony, but you have to know their typical breed features. In my opinion a lot of not very experienced breeders or new breeders are only
looking for the head and losing the rest of the horse. Also we can see that there will be more special directions of breeding like show, endurance, riding or race horses, mostly total different type of horses. I think we have reached at this moment the max about the extreme heads. We have to keep the standard and that’s a complete Arabian horse with the type, not only head, good, strong body and legs, so that we can use them various ways - showing or riding. TuttoArabi: You started your career with horse riding, also with purebred horses. Do you believe that the modern show horses are still capable of performing in sports? CB: Yes of course as long as the constitution of the horse

PEOPLE
is good and also his mind should be good to cooperate and to work for the rider. However we are losing the good bone structure of the legs and that’s explainable, because the horses are getting more and more refined and some people even say that there are stallions that are getting more and more feminine. Tutto Arabi: You started your career with horse riding, also on pure bred horses. What is your opinion on modern show horse breeding that is strongly focused on the shape of the head and expressive movements that in consequence pushes a lot of breeders to run for the pretty heads only. How in your opinion the future show horse breeding will look like? Do you like this development or are there still some features of the old fashion Arabian that you would like to see back in the modern horse? CB: Evolution is unstoppable but we have to be careful to preserve the special features which makes a horse an Arabian. I think that in the future we are getting more and more in different directions to get the Arabian horse better and better in there specialism for example: racing, endurance, riding and showing, BUT to improve one special thing will always cost quality of another feature! 152 | TUTTO ARABI - www.tuttoarabi.com
TA: What is your opinion of the “ideal Arabian”? CB: For me the ideal Arabian horse would have a good type (not only a good head ) , good bodied, good legged, strong movement and a willingness character so that people can have fun with their horse! TA: And what are the particular horses that impressed you the most? CB: There are more horses that impressed me a lot, to impress me the horse has to give me goose bumps or tears in my eyes. I had the opportunity to judge many great champions in the past and hopefully in the future again.
PEOPLE
Interview with
CEDES BAKKER TA: Nowadays the competition in showing has grown rapidly and smaller breeders find it difficult to compete against the big middle eastern countries. What is your opinion regarding this development? CB: if you have money then you can afford the best of the best, so if these high quality and valued horses are competing, then they win also because the owners will use the best trainers and they will show the horses in the best conditions. And I understand the small breeders that they are not keeping up with the money but they should keep the love for the Arabian horse and should try to breed for the best they could. TA: What is the hardest point of judgment for show horse judge? CB: The hardest point is to judge the legs, because there are four of them and you really have to have the knowledge about legs and my riding background is helping me a lot, because of working with big dressage or jumping stables and see and ride so many different horses in the past to know what is functional wrong or right. Over some time Cedes became one of the most popular faces in the international jury panel travelling to judge
different level shows across Europe and Middle East. But his story with the horses began with the career of high level dressage and show jumping rider…of ponies! Cedes Bakker: I am involved with horses since I was six, I started with riding ponies. I was riding both dressage and jumping on a high level. Also I was riding pony stallions for stallion owners. The ponies that I was riding had most of the time 50- 75% Arabian blood. So my parents were getting more interested in the purebred Arabian horses. In 1980 they bought their first Arabian purebred mares from the well-known Van Roosmalen family. They had mainly Crabbet / Russian lines. They were the owners of Bora who was a son of Abdullah. Later we also bought him and I rode him to the highest level of dressage and jumping, which was very unusual at that time, because the opinion of the traditional riders and judges was, that on a purebred Arabian horse, you could not ride, too difficult and hot! After one year their opinion was completely changed, www.tuttoarabi.com - TUTTO ARABI | 153

CEDES BAKKER because I was winning every time riding the Arabians. Then I was showing the horses of my parents on the shows in Holland. After this period my attention was made to be become a judge. In Holland you have to do an government exam to be allowed to become a judge. TA: What was your best show experience by now? CB: I have more favorite shows: Of course there are great important shows, that means A-shows and title shows, like Aachen, Paris Worldchampionships, Dubai, European championships, Las Vegas Worldcup I judged and enjoyed these shows because of the high quality horse and the tension of the shows. Poland is also one of my favourite countries to judges shows because they breed so may good horses. Bialka, National championship Janow, Al Khalediah show. Also I like to judge national championships from all
154 | TUTTO ARABI - www.tuttoarabi.com
countries because for the owners its always a big honor if their horse is crowned as a national champion. But on the other side I enjoy and support also a lot of the smaller shows because the atmosphere is more relaxed for the horses and also for the judges. Most of the times these organizers are doing there very best to entertain the owners, sponsors, trainers and of course to give the horses their best treatment and these smaller shows provide, because of qualifications, the bigger shows the higher quality horses. It also gives the younger horses time to get used to transport, atmosphere and people before they get to the high quality shows. To name a view shows: Bruge, Ismer show, the Italian shows in general, Arabian horse weekend, Tulip Cup. Hopefully we are able to show our beautiful horses this year again , because it was very hard for everybody in this Covid time. q

Flor de Lis Horse Trials opens its competition season by Luis Mericaechevarría (Director de la Yeguada Flor de Lis.) photos by Yeguada Flor archive
After the long break forced by the pandemic during 2020 and the Rinoneumonitis in 2021, the Stud Flor de Lis takes a step forward to position itself at the frontline, by opening its competition season with two national competitions in the same weekend: the National Eventing 2* Competition (CCN 2*) and the National Eventing Pony Competition (CCNP) Stud Flor de Lis. Her Royal Highness Teresa de Borbón y Borbón, Princess of the Two Sicilies and owner of the complex, opens the doors of her house to offer a

unique event in which to exhibit her Purebred Arabian Horses (P.A.H), and where attendees and riders can enjoy the discipline of eventing in a pleasant and safe environment. The Stud Flor de Lis has been breeding P.A.H horses for more than eight decades, developing one of the best-known lines in the world both for its morphology and its sporting abilities. This breeding tradition, inaugurated by H.R.H. Alfonso de Borbón-Dos Sicilias Infant of Spain and Duke of Calabria, and continued, since 1965, by his daughter Teresa, is based on a breeding method based on constancy, security, mutual trust and respect for the horse’s nature. This method has given and continues to give impressive results and many of her horses have been national and international champions. Currently, the Stud Flor de Lis has its own competition team in the eventing discipline, which includes three of the equestrian disciplines: dressage, show jumping and cross country. The event will be held next April 23-25 at the Stud’s facilities, located on the El Canto de la Cruz estate in the Madrid, municipality of Colmenar Viejo. During these three days, the 120 riders attending will compete in the different disciplines (one each day) to obtain the necessary classification for 164 | TUTTO ARABI - www.tuttoarabi.com
SPECIAL the Spanish Championship and to contest for the prizes offered by the different sponsors. Although the main competition is the 2 Star Level Horse Trials, the younger riders and their ponies will also compete in the CCNP, organized specifically for them. The organizing committee of the competition, has wanted to offer a professional and well cared event with sponsors such as the gourmet brands Valles del Esla or Cvne, El Corte Inglés, AECCA, Roeckl, Pinol and I.E.B. among others, and national media collaborators such as ¡HOLA!, CCEventing and Revista Ecuestre, and international ones such as Tutto Arabi among others. In addition, the Stud has renovated its competition arena, new obstacles from the supplier of the Longiness Global Champions Tour as well as new obstacles for cross country, acquired in France from the builder of the famous les Cinq Étoiles de Pau, adding a total of 90 new obstacles. Despite the improvement of the pandemic data, the Stud Flor de Lis will continue to maintain strict health safety measures for the event, always in accordance with current regulations, in order to offer a safe competition for all. The capacity will be limited to 120 riders and a total of 400 attendees, the use of the mask will be mandatory throughout the event by all participants and attendees and the safety distance of 2 meters must be maintained at all times. In addition to these measures, the Stud has a health protocol, both for attendees and horses containing the rules and behaviour guidelines, which will be made available to all riders and staff attending the event and must be accepted and signed before entering the compound. With all this, the Stud Flor de Lis guarantees a unique event in its category where both riders of all ages and companions will be able to enjoy a weekend outdoors

“Behind Every Great Stallion There is a Great Mare” from Arabian Stallions Vol. XVII book
Good Dams are the Basis for Breeding a Successful Stallion. Do we Take the Stallions too Seriously in Breeding?
by Monika Savier
Before the time when worldwide shipping of semen of stallions of all kinds of origin was not yet practiced, almost every European country had their own distinctive type of Arabian, formed by the selection exerted by the natural environment, climate, and food or also by selection criteria applied by their respective region or country. As a result, there are Egyptian Arabians as well as Spanish, Russian, Polish or Marbach Arabians, just to name a few. The state studs took over the breeding Albrecht Adam, Arabian mare and her foal, Oil painting (1845)
168 | TUTTO ARABI - www.tuttoarabi.com
for the selection of stallions and specified the criteria to be used. Functionality was considered more important for the selection than Arabian type, as all horses were intended to be ridden later on. The wind of the legendary old cavalry was still blowing through the barns and training centers for riders and breeders. Private studs used the state-run stallion stations without having to stable stallions of their own. Today, however, almost a hundred years later, riding horses as a means of transportation have vanished from public

spaces and lots of things have changed. Many state studs were closed or it was allowed to convert them into museums of all sorts. Small private breeding enterprises cropped up. Riding turned into a hobby. What connects the different worlds of horses and their owners today is a kind of world religion that provides the space for an enormously wide field of interest, such as sports, representation, or economy. In addition, advanced reproduction technologies evolved, and were not only applied by the state studs for their stallions, but even by private small breeders. Today, Arabian breeding is highly specialized, asking for a completely different kind of selection. There are four flourishing sections of Arabian horses which apply different selection methods: Arabians bred for speed on the racetrack, bred for performance in endurance sports, bred for showing and beauty; and then there is the forth one which is the single branch of worldwide breeding that concentrates on horses of a historical geographic background: the Straight Egyptian Arabians. Even these Egyptian bloodlines are successfully selected for breeding for the same aims, as showing,
and occasionally for endurance and track racing. While on the racetrack and for endurance sports, selection is mainly done by means of racing performance of mares as well as stallions, the selection for show horses, and also the Straight Egyptians is, by and large, a matter of the respective markets. The body language of stallions, often displayed spectacularly on the occasion of shows and stud presentations, is very much dominating the media coverage. It’s just these online pictures of our horses, in particular of the show scene stallions, that have moved the world of horse breeding from the analogous reality in a natural environment into the artificial world of digital horse business – which is much supported by social media. For some of the members of this business world, horses tend to be fabulous creatures which turned into reality and became aspects of their own selves – a dreamed reality – as indicated by the fact that the most beautiful Arabians in this world are usually just owned and admired, but not used in any other way. Stallions represent the other Self, a hidden personality, the
“
Bedouin Horse breeders emphasized the importance of the mare over the stallion in both, warfare and breeding. The love and admiration they felt for their mares, however, is perhaps best expressed through the centuries of Arabic literature. It is here that one can best appreciate not only the physical characteristics the Bedouins prized, but also the beauty and spiritual attributes that make the Arabian mare a treasure beyond price.

aesthetic part or the athletic one, or the gentle or the wild one… Such stallions are the projection of unfulfilled ideals, and at the same time, they are a subject which can be controlled. Both of them have resulted in a complete mastership over the reproduction of horses. With that, the mares are increasingly fading from the spotlight and being pushed into the background. The
possibility of globalizing frozen semen via Instagram, Facebook, or show streaming services made certain stallions famous all over the world, and made their owners rich men. With that, linebreeding that had been locally rooted started to minimize. If you look for a straight Polish Arabian horse today, you have to make a lot of effort by digging into the pedigrees of Polish studs in order to find a proper one. The markets there are just as much dominated by stallions bred according to show criteria and imported from Qatar, with their bloodlines originating from Poland, Brazil and Spain, or Russia, where one is breeding with stallions of different combinations of origin as well. On the catwalks of Arabian shows, we see beauty in perfection, but also sometimes horses bordering on the unacceptable, when the functionality of the horses has only been allotted a minor role. And these could be winners, the super guys who divide between themselves the market for breeding of good mares. Their breeding fee is too high and leaves no room for testing and experiments.
BLOODLINE
All the above was leading to a restriction of the gene pool available for horse breeding today. Taking a look into a modern pedigree, you will often find a high degree of inbreeding - which is, sadly, mostly not based on a consistent breeding strategy, since most of the sires cropped up from the showing scene, and the dams just come from anywhere. And even though these mares are responsible for a greater percentage of a foal’s quality than are the stallions, they are often not considered enough in planning of breeding for the future. It’s not only that the genetic material is split between mares and stallions, but there are also epi-genetic factors on the mares’ side that further shape and influence the foal during pregnancy and even after the it is born. Every breeder knows that a shy dam will produce shy foals, and that a dominant lead mare will transmit to her offspring just this kind of character, that will then be perpetuated into the next generations (the mechanism is called epigenetics). Which is why embryo transfer, if it should ever be necessary, should only be done using good Arabian broodmares as recipient mares. Many traits typical to a breed are only transmitted in the embryonic phase, and further solidified during raising time and educating of the foal after birth. These facts also need to be considered when a mare is expected to produce a good stallion. Mares who became known as „stallion producers“ can be assumed to have had dominant status in their herd, as well as pride and composure, so as to produce a self-confident colt. A shy colt growing up with his subordinate dam will hardly grow into the role of a breeding sire; the genetically implied and epigenetically consolidated behavior of a dominant stallion affects his body language, his gaits, his pride in his way of displaying himself. He will overcome his flight instinct when difficulties arise,
meeting the challenge just as nature intended for him to do. It is also possible, however, that many potential sires simply remain undiscovered; one reason being that they are not submitted to any criteria of selection. To be able to judge colts as required, the whole animal should be checked, not just their heads and necks. Such procedure needs the experience of many years. Apart from that, there are the high cost and risk when one undertakes to present successfully a promising sire to the public. In addition they do not like to try to engage in the inevitable competition with the big studs of the Gulf area. This is a dilemma that calls for suitable initiatives to be taken into the right directions: the breeding associations of Europe might consider joint show events, or other alternatives such as hosting combined shows, featuring stallions and mares presented together with their offspring This would be highly informative. It would also replace partly the social online networks that breeders use now, and would, last not least, constitute a very necessary measure of ongoing education which is in the best interest of quality breeding.

Based on the example of the breeding history at Katharinenhof Stud, Dr Nagel explains about the secrets of his success with his long-time experiment. A lot of world-famous stallions such as Salaa El Dine, Adnan, Asfour, Safir, NK HafidJamil, and NK Nadeer were born there. Some others, such as Madkour I, Mohafez, and Ansata Halim Shah only came to fame after they had been used as sires with a group of carefully selected mares whose offspring, in their turn, would then lay the foundations for the success of their respective sire lines all over the world. What were Dr Nagel’s criteria for selecting his stallions? Who were these dams in the background, and what influence did they have on the whole?
“To Breed Successful Stallions, the Breeders Need to Take the Mares More Seriously” by Hans J. Nagel photo by Joanna Jonientz
How to produce a good stallion? It’s a highly important question. Most breeders of Arabian horses won’t think much about that topic. They are more interested in having mostly fillies anyway – obviously assuming that some when later, when that filly has grown, they are going to find a stallion that is well suited to this mare. The question is getting increasingly more important, however, as the number of good sires is getting ever smaller. Artificial insemination and the show scene are responsible for that, as only show champions will receive enough mares to cover - mostly done by artificial insemination - while other stallions are 172 | TUTTO ARABI - www.tuttoarabi.com
hardly in demand. Our initial question, however, keeps being up to date, and is even crucial in the case of a bigger stud and particularly in the case of one that depends on home-bred stallions: mostly because they will want to breed horses of a type of their own, or with a certain performance capability in mind. The closer such a stud has come to its goals, the more difficult using external stallions will become, as they run the risk of introducing or re-introducing not only the traits they were looking and wishing for, but also unwanted characteristics, or even detrimental drawbacks that had been bred out already.

It’s no problem if the stallions are smallerthan the mares. I prefer the stallions to deliver type, not size. Those highly influential stallions for the last eighty years: Nazeer, and then Skowronek for the Polish lines, and Amurath for the Russian lines - all three of these influential sires did not reach 148 cm. That idea that a stallion needs to be a big guy to get something going, that s macho thinking and absolutely wrong. In breeding, the smaller and more refined stallions have always been those who were far more influential. The size of the foal is determined by the dam, not the sire. Hans J. Nagel, 2009

Successful experienced stud managers in the past were interesting partners for discussing this topic, such as Dr Rudolfski who headed the big Czech stud of Hostau and in whose hands as a director, for some time, the fate of the Vienna Spanish Riding School rested. Later he was one of the foundation members of the German Association for Arabian Horse Breeding (VZAP). Another important contributor when discussing this topic was Dr Krysztalowicz, who headed the Polish State Stud for 30 years, leading this stud to its top-of-the-world position. Basically, there was general agreement on the following points:
The first guideline: “Mate same with same”, or to put that more specifically: “Don’t breed small mares to very big stallions” but do, if necessary, “breed small stallions to big mares”. The second guideline: There ought to be a certain degree of kinship between the horses to be mated. So they should have some common ancestors, they should “nick” with their bloodlines. For example, the sire of the stallion and the grandsire of the mare should be identical, or the grandsire of the stallion and the grandsire of the mare should be siblings, etc. Both of these guidelines are easy to meet. www.tuttoarabi.com - TUTTO ARABI | 173

The next question, now, is: How to recognize the quality of the stallion?
The Polish broodmares at Janow Podlaski state stud are famous in the world

A sire needs to have developed correctly and according to his age, and may additionally have a special, much desired trait in his outer appearance, such as a typical shape of the head, an elegant neckline, or particularly well conformed hind quarters. To put that in technical terms: the stallion needs to have a good, correct phenotype. In Arabian breeding, there are many stallions today who won shows and embody that phenotype, with some of them even distinguishing themselves by some much desired trait. However, will stallions like these be good transmitters at the same time, animals to be recommended as sires? Yes and no. „Yes“ if the stallion’s genotype is known as well, and „no“ if there is no data available. It’s logical and consistent to consider the genotype of the same importance
as the phenotype, as the genes are what determines the prepotency of a stallion: his power of transmission or heredity. Experienced breeders are able to guess the genotype from a stallion’s pedigree. However, to correctly evaluate a sire, both sets of data need to be known, the phenotype as well as the genotype. The only way to really determine the genotype is by progeny testing. An ancient saying from the bible, “Ye shall know them by their fruits”, expresses this time-proven wisdom. The genotype is expressed in the quality of the offspring. A stallion ought to have produced at least 10 to 15 foals from different dams to make it sufficiently possible to assess his quality. In private breeding, many smaller stallion owners don’t have the opportunity to do this testing, as their stallions don’t receive enough mares

for serving, or else it will take several years to produce a pool of offspring big enough to provide reliable information on the stallion’s transmission qualities. During that time, it’s all up in the air, and the mare owners who decided to use such a stallion are those who bear the risk of whether progeny testing will prove successful. That period of testing is different for big breeders or state studs. They are in a position to present their sire-to-be with a great number of mares within one year, or even more safely, within two breeding periods, and can get the desired information within the shortest time possible. So the following has been substantiated: A good sire needs to be exemplary in his outer appearance as well as in his transmitting potency. Without these data, achieving good breeding results is highly unlikely. It’s not uncommon to find that certain stallions will produce very good female offspring while their male get is of inferior quality, or that they will produce good stallions as well as good mares.
Both sexes will profit from carrying out reliable progeny testing.
Bałałajka (Amurath Sahib x Iwonka) and her daughter Bandola by Witraz were cornerstones in Arabian breeding in Poland
During the 1980ies and 90ies in Germany, the Association for Arabian Horse Breeding (VZAP) was obliged to conduct stallion approval events on a yearly basis – as decreed by state authorities. However, this supplied a great amount of data with interesting contents. At my suggestion, out of my position as chairman at that time, a study was carried out to estimate the transmitting abilities of the successfully approved stallions. For a period of about 20 years of mandatory stallion approval, the results were as follows. Every year, about a hundred stallions aged 3 to 4 were presented to an approval committee. About a third of them, so about 30 stallions, were officially approved/licensed, meaning they received an award that was based on their outward appearance and characteristics. The winner of the event received a gold ribbon, the second a silver ribbon as the reserve winner. What the study investigated was how many male offspring of approval event winners - produced during the lifespan www.tuttoarabi.com - TUTTO ARABI | 175

of that winner or at least during the period when stallion approval was mandatory - were approved in their turn. The astonishing result: in all those years, there were just eight approved stallions who produced one or two stallions who were approved in turn. Just two more of the placed sires had some approved stallions among their progeny, four and five of them, respectively. This disappointing result is based upon the fact that in a stallion approval, it’s only the phenotype that can be assessed, while the genotype is not considered at all. By the way, another fact that’s not involved in stallion assessment is the quality of their dams, which would be of high value and significance. As a consequence of this study and the results of long years of stallion approval routines, the breeding association decided to introduce today’s system of „elite mares“ which assessed and awarded the outwardly apparent qualities of mares. There is a special feature which is highly uncommon, and if it is found, it’s a real stroke of luck. This feature is for a mare to be able to consistently produce 176 | TUTTO ARABI - www.tuttoarabi.com
outstanding offspring, fillies as well as colts, from matings with different stallions. Unfortunately, mares like this are not easily recognized in everyday breeding in small studs. In the big studs in the East, such as JanoszPodlaski in Poland and Tersk in Russia, these mares were placed first when assessments were carried out. In these vast studs, a few such mares became the cornerstones of whole breeding populations. In Tersk Stud in particular, they had a scale for mare quality which put special emphasis on this feature, elevating dams with these qualities to „stallion producer“ status. In the U.S.A., the mare Bint Magidaa had a brilliant career as a stallion producer. She was born in the Egyptian stud El Zahraa and was a member of the Obayan strain. Later exported to the US, she achieved fame world-wide via her three sons. All three of these stallions were sired by the powerful Morafic son Sheikh El Badi. The most well-known among them was to be Ruminaja Ali, whose name is found in the pedigrees of many famous show horses even today. Second in fame was RuminajaBajat, who produced numerous offspring in

“Stallion Producer“ Dams and Their Sons on Katharinenhof Stud

Already within the herd of foals 1968 in El-Zahraa the little bay Hanan appealed as the most brave and elegant one and she remained like this for all her life of 28 years. Her majestic look and her great role as a mother of 11 wonderful foals made her the queen of the stud Hans J. Nagel
“
Outstanding stallion-producing dams are not unknown and have been found in German Arabian horse breeding, too. An example with world-wide influence on breeding happened to take place in my Katharinenhof stud. In 1968, I bought a bay filly named „Hanan“ from the Egyptian state stud El Zahraa. She was a daughter of Alaa el Din, with her dam being Mona of the Obayan strain. This mare’s lifetime achievement was eleven foals, five of them colts, and every single one of these colts went in for a career. Three of them stayed in Germany, two were sold abroad. The first one, Jamil by Madkour I, proved to be an outstanding mare producer with more than 50 female offspring born during his time in Ansata Stud in the US. As a sire in his own turn, it was only his son Ansata Nile Pasha who became known and was every audience’s favorite in shows. The next son of
Hanan, Asfour by Malik, was exported to Australia to stamp Simeon Stud there. He was followed by Ibn Galal I by Ibn Galal, who would ultimately be a main influence for the whole broodmare band of Babolna stud in Hungary. Salaa el Dine by Ansata Halim Shah was the fourth colt. He stayed in Katharinenhof stud where he was the number 1 among the sires for years. Salaa el Dine proved to be an outstanding sire for the next generation of male offspring, such as Safir in Al Rayyan stud in Qatar who went on to produce the stallion Ashhal al Rayyan for their next generation. In Iran, it was his son Mubarak who took Iranian Arabian horse breeding to a new level in all disciplines: shows, the racetrack, and endurance racing. And finally, there was Crusader who came to live in Maxwell Stud in Great Britain and who two times achieved the award of Reserve World Champion in Paris while at the same time being highly successful on the racetrack. The last son of Hanan to be mentioned was Abdallah by Galion, who made a name for himself as a good transmittor for high performance Arabians among endurance breeders. When the previously mentioned Dr Rudofski examined young Hanan during a Katharinenhof visit, his comment was enthusiastic: “With this Hanan, you bought a producer of stallions.” He was so right! Up to today, five to six generations of Egyptian Arabian horses have been born on Katharinenhof stud. For most of them, the bay mare Hanan is listed very early in their pedigrees. This mare together with her stable mateLotfeia, another Alaa El Din daughter but a member of the Hadban strain in El

Zahraa, are the true foundation mares of Katharinenhof stud. Hanan is the mare who had the greatest influence via the stallion side. Lotfeia has, via her exceptionally beautiful daughter NK Nashua – a Salaa El Dine daughter
– founded the Hadban family on Katharinenhof stud and brought it to full flower. This most well-known group of the Hadban strain that is so much famed in Egypt, has made the history books world-wide owing to her.
Research Results Confirm the Practical Experience From Breeding for Several Generations As the final outcome of the above considerations, including the VZAP study on the results of long years of stallion approval events, VZAP officials are not the first ones to come to the following conclusion: In order to increase the probability of breeding good stallions – horses that are able to influence a breeding population on
a long-term basis – the sire and dam of the stallion need to be as similar as possible. Sire and dam of a potential stallion need to nick to a certain degree, to have a certain part of their bloodlines in common. The potential stallion’s sire needs to have produced a sufficient number of foals for his transmitting potency to be assessed. www.tuttoarabi.com - TUTTO ARABI | 179
BLOODLINE
NK Abla (NK Jamal El Dine x NK Aziza), dam of NK Anwar
NK Nadirah (Adnan x Nashua). She is the dam of NK Nadeer and NK Nizam, two cornerstones in the NK breeding concept
These prerequisites are easier to achieve, for sure, when there is a stud with a breeding population composed of a few families only, whose quality and traits are sufficiently well known from long years of breeding with them. In this case, the prerequisite of a bloodline nick - be it more close or more wide - is easiest and most conveniently met. 180 | TUTTO ARABI - www.tuttoarabi.com
It is also known that a top sire is able to influence breeding positively for three generations. After that, his influence is more or less completed; younger stallions have out-competed him and taken over his role. If this is not the case, there was no progress in breeding! In all horse breeding operations, no matter whether for sports horses, racing horses,

or Arabian horse breeding, this is a wellknown fact. The great influence of the dams on the quality of the stallions can also be read from the following results achieved on Katharinenhof Stud. Among the sires who successfully served on Katharinenhof Stud, there was a bay purchased in the USA, the young
stallion Mohafez by Ibn Moniet El Nefous out of Ahroufa. The mares to be served by him were selected according to the breeding criteria mentioned before. As a result, Mohafez was the one who had four approved male offspring under his belt in the VZAP study – so he was found to be one of the best transmittors, a prepotent sire. www.tuttoarabi.com - TUTTO ARABI | 181

Ansata Ken Ranya (Salaa El Dine x Ansata Prima Rose). She was the dam of NK Jamal El Dine and NK Kamar El Dine
Helala (Salaa El Dine x Ansata Gloriana). She was the dam of NK Hafid Jamil and other important NK horses
And then there was USA-born Ansata Halim Shah, a stallion who just blew the statistics. His performance was totally out of the ordinary. Licensed with a very pleasing phenotype, he was leased to Katharinenhof Stud for two years by Ansata Stud of Arkansas, USA. At that time, he was just three years old and had a famous sire and a dam of equal value. He did not yet have any 182 | TUTTO ARABI - www.tuttoarabi.com
offspring – nevertheless, Katharinenhof Stud choose this hitherto unknown stallion who, in the course of these two years, served 30 mares, with 19 fillies and 11 colts born. One of these sons became a sire for Babolna State Stud. Two others were successfully approved as sires in Marbach State Stud, seven others received stallion awards during the VZAP stallion approvals in
BLOODLINE Kranichstein. Among these, there were Salaa el Dine, Maysoun, and El Thay Ibn Halim Shah. Just a single one of the eleven colts was not presented for approval. Never before and never afterwards did a stallion achieve this outstanding result. How was this kind of success even possible? The answer: both of these successful stallions had only been presented selected mares, females chosen with the greatest care, with a quality similar to that of Ansata Halim Shah, and with more or less of the bloodline nick that is so desirable. His daughters were gorgeously beautiful and correctly built Arabian horses who were sought after world-wide later on. So 95% of the offspring produced during his stay in Germany were of top quality. On his return into the USA, this success in Germany meant high demand for the stallion. Lots of mares were served by him, mares of all levels of quality. Later analysis showed that just 25% of the foals born succeeded in reaching the quality that had been achieved in Germany.
Later on, Ansata Halim Shah was sold to Qatar and served the mares of Al Shaqab Stud. Unfortunately, he died in an accident only a short time later, only leaving 15 to 20 offspring on the Gulf – and among all of them, just one achieved world-wide fame: Al Adeed Al Shaqab out of Sundar Alisayyah. This one was a wonderful stallion and sire, a true son of Ansata Halim Shah. Of all the other offspring produced there, nothing special has been heard. Obviously, nobody paid attention to finding the right mares that would have been the most suitable ones for Ansata Halim Shah. Everything said above clearly outlines how important and influential mares are when it comes to breeding horses. It’s an amazing fact that historically, the Bedouins cast their lot with the mares, basing their breeding strategy and recording on the dam lines. In Bedouin genealogy, the stallions were not even mentioned. Today we know that the influence of the dam on the progeny is 60% and more. A number to be kept in mind. q

My name is Sandra Platzeck, I am 41 years old, I am a breeder of Arabian horses, a veterinarian and I work with equine breeding. I have been in love with horses since I was a child. My first contact with the Arabian horse was when I was around 11 years old through my father when he took me to the National exhibition that took place at Parque da Água Funda in São Paulo, and it was passion at first sight! Women have gained a lot of space in all areas of the equine market. The Arabian horses are intelligent and sensitive and women have a greater tact in dealing with them. When we do what we like with love and dedication the doors open and opportunities arise. I am
responsible for the entire breeding process, from mating, mare insemination, washing and embryo transfer. Each birth is the fulfillment of a dream with a lot of work behind it. When a foal is born with the desired characteristics, satisfaction is enormous and indescribable. Persistence is the quality one should have, in my opinion, to make her dream come true. I believe that everyone can fulfill their dreams and projects as long as they never give up, even after negative or frustrating situations. I hope my experience can be an inspiration for a future generation of women in this world and I hope that more women will fall in love with the Arabian horse and follow this path because it is very rewarding.

My name is Raquel Jacovas, I am from Rio Grande do Sul, a student from the 5th semester of Medical School, but my passion and hobby have always been the Arabian Horses. My family has been creating horses for 33 years, I was privileged to be born in this environment that shaped who I am today. I grew up on the back of a horse, I learned since a young age to live with the responsibilities that are included in the daily life of the farm. Dealing with horses is a unique experience, as you are dealing with a large and majestic animal, but at the same time, so sensitive and understanding too. It’s a difficult task, but a very rewarding one. It was from that first contact that I developed this passion until my first competition at the age of 5, of endurance, and I continue competing in the modalities of barrel race, pools and cross country. Being a woman like me in the Arabian horse world for me means freedom. Being a woman who rides horses is to be an empowered woman, who conquers her place even where she was not well regarded, a woman who shows that victories come with a lot of training, sweat and effort, and not only physical strength. Being a woman who deals with horses shaped in me a very unique character, since I am in the middle of a world that a few years ago was predominantly sexist. But horses are for those who like them, not for those who want them, and I always liked having them around, that must be why I always had the determination to move on! Since I was very young, my trajectory started with the most basic work, from picking up my horse in the pasture, tackling, moving around the arena, riding in the field, training etc ... I never allow anyone to do it for me because I wanted to do everything for myself, always watching what
the professionals were doing. The beginning of a winning career came from there, where I learned to really know the horse. Know their signs. Even when I wasn’t dealing or riding, I was studying bloodlines, going to shows and auctions, always trying to learn more about this unique animal. All the knowledge that I gathered and continue to gather, I try to apply it in the competitions and pass it on to the people who ride with me today. To deal with horses you need to be a sensitive person, having sensitivity to hear, feel and interpret the signals that your horse gives to you. And to be able to win in the equestrian world, you have to be a very focused person, predisposed to try hard to understand your horse and achieve your goals. If you find an obstacle, you must try harder to overcome it, and never give up, believe in yourself! These days I heard from the parents of some girls who ride with me that they wanted to ride and be like me. I replied that I wish they were even better than me. Because it is too rewarding to be able to inspire someone to follow in my footsteps and to be able to evolve further with my teachings. My career with Arabian horses has been going on for some years, but it’s the future generations that will continue all this, with even more knowledge, since nobody knows everything. It’s better to help someone than to be helped. It’s empathy and putting yourself in the other’s lives, and that’s just too beautiful. To be able to celebrate the victory of someone who one day came to you with a difficulty and ends up leaving with a smile on the face. It was in the most difficult moments when I found myself at a crossroads, not knowing what to do to make it work, that I ended up learning the most.

My name is Magdalena Muraszko-Kowalska, I am probably the only archaeologist in the world of artists drawing horses. And certainly in Poland, where I come from. For several years I have been drawing, Arabian horses occupy the most space in my work. Although I have been fascinated by the Arab world for years, also professionally - by education I am an archaeologist specializing in ancient Egypt, I have only recently entered the world of Arabian horses. Many times, when I was in Egypt on excavations, I admired horses in the desert, although only from a distance. At the beginning of my fascination there were sport horses, jumping horses with which I was associated since I was a child. However, the Arabian horses had something eye-catching about them. Since I quit my job in a corporation and started drawing horses, it is Arabians that appear most often in my drawings. No other breed of horses has so much expression, can pose so perfectly and show themselves to the public. As if they wanted to be admired. It is impossible not to love them! The world of horses is dominated by men (often followed by women). Swapping roles is tough, but it’s worth trying to go hand in hand with the guys. It is a specific world, hard work, but also an exceptionally beautiful topic. In the world of Arabian horse art, this is easier than working directly with horses. There is a group of women in the Arabian horse world who are very supportive, and fortunately I found them.
I really owe a lot to the support of many wonderful women, their inspiration, encouragement and faith in me and my abilities. Thank you girls! The world of fine art is very hermetic, as is the Arabian horse lovers community. Therefore, the subject is doubly difficult. You have to be very persistent and try again and again without losing your enthusiasm. If you do what you love and do it well, the world will finally see you. And although there are times when you have tears in your eyes, I think you come out stronger. In such situations, I grab a pencil and draw only for myself, and such works are always the best. To reach your goal is important to be persistent, systematic, not to close yourself to the world, smile at it and smile at people, and above all - not to lose distance from yourself and be able to laugh at yourself. And when you stumble, when it gets sad - it’s worth having a horse’s mane nearby so that you can cry at it. Horses are perfect friends! And when you’re angry, hard work in the stable is the best way to improve your mood. I hope that I am only at the beginning of my adventure with the world of Arabian horses, I believe that from year to year I will gain more experience, friends and knowledge about this environment. I also hope that I will be able to support and inspire more girls, just as now I am helped by women who have known this world longer than me.

SPECIAL
My name is Helena Jodie Byrne. I am 15 years old and young girl passionately involved with pure bred Arabians. I have been riding Arabians since I was born as my Mother and Father are involved in breeding pure bred Arab’s. I have been around this breed of horse since I was born. I have a very special connection with horses but in particular with the Arabian breed. There is just some other X-factor when working with this breed. I have ridden and trained many many different breeds of horses but my focus the past 3 years has been completely on working with the pure bred Arabians. When I was 3 years old I lived in Ireland which is a country famous for equine sports. My Mother had 3 Arabian mares and a Stallion in Ireland and this is where I fell in love with the breed. We moved from Ireland to Denmark when I was 4 years old where my Mother and Father took over the running of the horse stud. “Taarup Arabians” is the name of our horse stud and my mother has had a lot of success the past 25 years both in show and riding. We have had national champions and top 5 in both Aachen and Paris. I always tagged along to the competitions with my Mother and learn a great amount as a young girl. Today my focus is mainly on the riding of the Arabians and not so much the showing, but the in hand showing also excites me a great deal. I feel this breed is very underestimated as a horse under saddle. So many people have a perception that Arabians are wild and very difficult to ride. I found this to be completely untrue and have found them to be extremely easy to handle and work and train with. I have had a lot of success in Dressage all over Europe with a number of different Arabians. Being a woman in the Arabian horse world for me
is very easy. I love working the horses I own and also my client’s horses. A lot more people are using their horses for riding the past couple of years where before the Arabian horses were mainly used for in hand showing. It is great to be able to use this wonderful breed for jumping, dressage, hackouts, long distance and the many other ways we use them. I ride 3 Arabians every day after school and currently have 2 which I am getting ready for the dressage season coming up. It is hard work and can be very difficult, but I am 100% focused and have great ambitions for winning competitions. All my time goes on the horses and I am dedicated to the Arabian breed. I love just going out to the paddock and spending time with these horses, just being around them and enjoying their presence. They really are such a special breed to be close to. I think anyone that has been luck enough to have an Arabian will know what I am talking about. I think the qualities you need to pursue your dream is have complete dedication if you want to be at the top. I have always learned from my parents who breed horses and dogs that if set yourself a goal or project, it must be something you feel is worthwhile and you must be willing to sacrifice your time and work hard to reach your dream. I am proud of the success I have achieved in the dressage competitions and have numerous 1st place wins on Arabians over many different breeds. It always gives me so much satisfaction to win on an Arabian. Recently I have set myself another goal on breeding top level riding Arabians. I will be putting some of my mares in foal with a very special stallion who I also ride and am very impressed by.

M ANUELA LU C I N I
Breeder, Rider, Trainer, Handler, Manager and Groom
SPECIAL My name is Manuela Lucini, I was born in Switzerland, on the Italian side; I speak Italian, think and eat Italian. I am honoured by Giorgia’s request to try to give some advice extrapolated from my experience with horses to those who would like to start this fantastic adventure with Arabian thoroughbreds. I’ll try ..... My passion for horses began when I was 7 years old, no one in my family encouraged me, it was born that way and that’s all I could talk about. I was lucky enough in 1997 to realise my big dream: to live with my horses and start breeding Arabians. It wasn’t as easy as writing this, like all great dreams to achieve it I went through a lot, but I’m still here. Since then, I find myself managing everything personally at 360 degrees: owner, breeder, breeding management, trainer, handler, saddle taming and sale of show products, as well as groom. In all these roles I have never had any particular problems with men, except - and this is no small thing - in the daily management of employees, specifically stable men. It’s hard to find someone who really does it for passion, and I admit that it’s harder for a woman to be respected, and it’s hard for men (depending on their mind) to accept orders or to know less than a woman. This is why I stay in contact with my animals as much as possible. I delegate little. With breeders, trainers and handlers, I have never had any problems, maybe some good-natured teasing from the latter when I entered the ring with a stallion, or for how I spoil the horses, but I am interested in the final result and the compliments gratified and encouraged me. Unfortunately in 2011 I suffered a serious accident due to an unjustified attack by a stallion. I always avoid talking about it, I don’t like being a victim, but I will do so in this one exception, just to encourage you never to give up! For reasons that are still unknown, the horse had suddenly become aggressive and I can only assume that he had been mistreated by the stableman on duty at the time because when I returned from my brief absence I noticed that the stallion had definitely changed in his attitude towards people. As a result of the accident I lost the mobility of my left hand (the dominant one for me) and my wrist by 70 per cent, permanently.
From the window of the hospital during my recovery I could see a stable where the horses were being ridden, and beyond the hill on the horizon I knew that there were all my beloved Arabian horses waiting for me... I hardly ever cry, but at the time the tears often flowed because I didn’t know if I would ever be able to ride or at least handle them again. I never gave up for them! In fact, after a year of intensive physiotherapy, I was still able to write with my hand and get on the saddle. It was like living again! Even the doctors can’t explain how it’s possible and are amazed at how a human body can react and adapt to new circumstances. But deep down I know that it’s thanks to love, true passion. That is the real strength. I can no longer tame horses or do any kind of acrobatics, and I have more difficulty, but I can be with my horses all the time, and this is already a success. I must say that I have a background as an athlete, lots of sport from childhood, even at competitive levels, and the good fortune to have spent years in close contact with great athletes, trainers and physiotherapists of a great Italian football team, MILAN AC. With them I learned a lot, certainly that you need discipline, sacrifice, perseverance and athletic training. I personally believe that, regardless of gender, laziness does not go hand in hand with success. It takes passion, love, dedication, sacrifices. But also LUCK! Trying to achieve your goals according to your possibilities, step by step and then adding new ones. But the hardest thing is to keep your dream. Here the work is just as hard. So, dear women, let’s roll up our sleeves and honour our determination. And our intuition too. We have this extra weapon...an immediate and I think more disinterested feeling with horses, let’s say less competitive and they feel it.... In the role of manager, a woman needs a lot of diplomacy. This is where I fall short. I admit that a woman must have an extra dose of diplomacy in every role in life. We need to be adept at using “carrot and stick” with everyone and even our horses. It would also be important to enjoy one’s dream fulfilled...this is my current goal.

SPECIAL Who am I? A woman born in the Midwest of the United States. Sassy, opinionated with a great sense of adventure, humor, and kindness. My approach to the Arabian horse world is with great emotion: Joy, curiosity, and gratitude for the horses and the people in my life. Hopefully, I will have more opportunities to inspire people to become involved with Arabian horses through speaking, teaching, and writing. Like many others, I am a library of experiences, willing to share those with others. I was a breeder for almost 30 years, I have garnered a lot of knowledge. It shocks me how long I am involved with Arabians. It seems like yesterday that I met my first Arabain horse in 1988. Since this article is about women in the industry, I will write from that perspective. Women by nature, for the most part, are caretakers and nurturers of emotional wellbeing. These qualities may bring criticism; we are too emotional, too kind, not objective enough, or intelligent enough. I say, “Phooey.” Women are good at the Arabian horse business using these specific qualities. Like Sheila Varian, Sigi Siller, or Barbara Griffith, Judith Forbis, Lenita Perroy, Marieta Salas, Lucy Whittier, the women of Kehilan Arabians. So many more that I cannot name them all. Brilliant women, creative women, and I can make pages of women that demonstrate these qualities. Many are friends now, and they also contributed to my knowledge either directly or indirectly. I try to give credit where it belongs, and it is important to me to recognize those who have contributed to my knowledge base. Never forget anyone who contributed to your career. Many people that contributed to my almost 30 years are gone now, like Bazy Tankersly. She was an amazing woman with an intriguing history, plus she taught anyone willing to learn. I learned to ask questions from anyone willing to answer. I had zillions of questions, smiling now because I am relentless in my pursuit of information; I love to learn. Have an avid curiosity too. Curiosity and learning will keep you involved with the people and the horses; they are a never-ending storybook. Since falling in love with Arabian horses in 1988, they have become my creative passion in life. As
I grew up, I was the typical horse-crazy girl who never dreamed I would one day have an Arabian breeding farm. Silver Maple Farm, Inc. Judy Jones of Atallah Arabian Farm started my journey. She nurtured my interest and supplied educational books on Arabian history, especially the Straight Egyptian Arabian, a “breed within the breed.” And she taught me hands-on about breeding and riding these magical creatures. The first time I went to her farm and saw the horses, I felt their connection through the use of their extraordinary eyes; I was captivated. To breed Arabians, you need a base of knowledge and at least one mentor. You must have a passion that calls for a dedication to understanding all aspects of a farm. It takes approximately 12 years to develop a breeding program, a fact I learned from Paul Husband. That requires observation and genetic knowledge; know your horses. Most of all, it requires patience. Then you have to decide what your mission for the horses is? Entertainment, show ring recognition, preserving a specific bloodline, or just for personal use, it’s all good. You may start with one goal in mind and change direction; I did. Today, I no longer breed Arabians, but I ride for pleasure, and I also write about them. I watch the women involved now and men too. Here are just a few women on my radar, Johanna Uhlstrom (breeder, trainer, and educator), Antonia Bautista (breeder, manager of other horses, and excellent marketing strategist), Ann Sophie von Elm (breeder), Huda and Hoda El Gabry, (second-generation breeders, Pharmacist, and Jewelry Designer), Viktoria Tauske (second generation breeder and Veterinarian,). Evie Tubbs Sweeney (rider, marketing expert), Janina Merz (second generation breeder at OM El Arab), Johanna Kale (second-generation breeder), Catherine “Cat” MacKenna, (Marketing, graphics, rider), Hilke DeBryker (breeding and marketing manager, now a new mother). Mia Shoukens (Reproduction expert). Photography and writing, Beth Ellen Hunziker, Lisa Abrahams, and April Visel, Christine Emmert, and Kelly Keneally. HH Sheikha Sara Al Sabah of Kuwait. I have two more personal favorites, Mohamed Jaidah (breeder); yes, I know he’s not a female! And Dana Al Meslemani (breeder and photographer.)

Couture and Show Photographer and Graphic Designer
SPECIAL I am Dana Russo, Sydney, Australia. I am a couture and show photographer as well as a graphic designer. I studied photography in high school firstly and this is when I got the photography bug and continued on with photographic courses through TAFE whilst being a make up and fashion assistant for over 7 years, this then led me into couture photography, I fell in love instantly. I started in the Equine industry with shows and events over 20 years ago before then becoming and independent photographer mainly focusing on Miniatures and Arabian Horses, I have been grateful that my ideas and vision have come to life and the support I have received has been inspirational to my shoots. I set myself goals to reach and learn more on photographing the Arabian breed that led me to a chance to photograph Internationally, in my international career I have had the privilege to photograph some of the most amazing horses in the world and meet some of the amazing people of the industry. I have been fortunate to live my life through my camera, as a female I’m very blessed to be treated as an equal in our industry, I must say I have had a few great mentors and they have always supported me and been honest from the start. I will always say I’m a show photographer 1st, but my passion is my couture and fashion shoots that make me want to create more. I don’t think I would truly be where I am without the inspiration and confidence of those who supported me including my Tutto Arabi Family as this has helped me to do more and travel
the world and lead to other opportunities within the industry. As an Australian female in this industry we are free to pursue our goals and achievements freely and am lucky to have been part of this wonderful industry. Sadly we all come up against obstacles when it comes to certain individuals, I have had to put up with a limited few forceful people wanting to take over my magazines and contacts and although upsetting that people think they are entitled to this, hard work and dedication has seen my contacts and magazines show unconditional loyalty. I have been and seen people bullied and it does need to stop, many people think they can do and say what they want and it can hurt and damage people, there is really no need for this in our Industry. To pursue your dream I think you should remain honest and true to yourself, make sure you do what you say you can do, I don’t believe in over enhancing or manipulating images just to get a job I feel it is misrepresenting, I know we need to do basic edits and we need to adjust colours to match or to alter images for graphic design work etc but I do not agree in altering conformation this is something I have seen over the years has been issue and I would not personal subject myself or clients to be misrepresented. I do think my experiences and history can be an inspiration, I think of myself as a very easy going person. I will always support and try and help any upcoming photographers, I don’t believe in undermining other photographers just to get a job, I have seen my fair share of good and bad of the industry and there are things I agree with and don’t, I have always tried to be fair in what I do,

Equine Photograper and Embroidery Designer
SPECIAL
My name is Patrycja Makowska and I am an equine photographer. I was born in 1992 in the central part of Poland, where I live to this day. I am an embroidery designer by profession. Half a year ago, I decided that I wanted to live on my own and quit my job. Today I am working on establishing my own company, which driving force will be the love for Arabian horses. Although I have been interested in Arabian horses since I was a kid (2004), when Pianissima was winning in the show rings as a yearling, I entered the world of Arabian horses, including show horses, by accident, in 2013. It was then that I met my childhood idol, Kasia Dolińska-Witkowska - the owner of the Zalia Arabians stud, whose photographs have shaped my image of Arabian horses over the years. Her own horses were the first I had contact with. Kasia welcomed me with open arms, and over time she also opened the door of her stable and gave the opportunity to photograph her horses. And, since 2014, Arabian horses have been my whole life and the most photographed theme by me. Kasia was and still is the person, the woman, who has had the greatest impact on my current life and the path I follow in the world of Arabian horses. Thanks to her I have the opportunity to learn to look at horses through the eyes of a breeder, which in my opinion is extremely important in the work of a photographer. The photographer has to shape what the breeder sees. The breeder notices much more and pays attention to more various important details than a person who has not bred a single horse. Kasia is my guarding angel who motivates me to continue working, learning and developing. She also had a significant impact on my perception of the world and taught me to always think positively and smile at life, even if it is not smiling at me. Women are particularly present in the Arabian horse community - they are breeders, photographers, trainers, publishers, groomers, veterinarians and judges. I have met many fantastic women in this world, full of passion for Arabian horses, sensitive to what surrounds them. As a photographer, you have to be double sensitive, see more. But when you are
enchanted by the beauty of an Arabian horse, you don’t have to worry about this sensitivity - but you have to care for it. Due to the big number of women associated with Arabian horses, I have never felt discriminated against in this world because of my gender. I believe that if you do something well and persistently improve in what you do, you have a set goal, it does not matter if you are a woman or a man. It is worth noting, however, that the better you are in your field, the more you achieve, the more often you may experience hostility from other people. It is sad that sometimes women can cut the wings of other women more harshly than any man. However, you have to be prepared for it and just do your thing, don’t give up on your dreams because of those kinds of people. That is why you need to be vigilant, isolate yourself from toxic and jealous people, and surround yourself with people who care about you, who will support you in difficult times and help you stand on your feet again. If you love Arabian horses and want to live with them, their world will be open to you. If you want to develop, you have the willingness to act and propose yourself in this world, and you have a deep faith in yourself, I think you will make your dreams come true. Life teaches humility, being critical of yourself and what you do, and I think that this humility is the foundation of success, next to love for Arabian horses. Of course, it is known that patience is also essential in overcoming the encountered obstacles, in pursuing your dreams step by step, day by day. Daily work on yourself and the desire to improve are necessary to achieve the set goals, which in my opinion should be updated from time to time and set new ones. You also have to be brave and ready to achieve these goals. When the world gives you the opportunity to take a step forward, opportunity to make one of your dreams come true - don’t hesitate for a moment! Chances given by life must be used because new ones may not happen. I believe that my story can be an inspiration and motivation for the future and the present generation

of women in the Arabian horse world, but of course not only. I come from a poor family with problems. The world of Arabian horses seemed distant and hermetic to me, so much, that I never dreamed of being part of it. Many people, looking at my life, through the knothole of where I come from, drew the wrong conclusions and built an unfair opinion about me. These people also did not understand my love for horses and the fact that you may want to spend your life with them without having much. Today I know and I can say with full responsibility that you decide yourself who you are and who
you will be. You decide what your dreams are and when you will make them come true. You decide what kind of people you surround yourself with and what kind of person you are. If you feel that something is standing in the way between you and your dreams - change it! Change your job, place of living, find new friends. Arabian horses, photographing them have changed me. Thanks to them, I have become a confident woman who knows every day what is the next goal I want to achieve, and believes that everything will succeed.
