Once again this year’s February appointment called us to Qatar to report the two most important Arabian horse-related sporting events in the Middle East, organized at the “Katara International Arabian Peninsula Horse Festival” (KIAHF 2023) chaired by His Excellency Prof. Khalid bin Ibrahim Al-Sulaiti (PHOTO). All competitions, shows and events were held as usual inside a large and monumental commercial facility on the outskirts of the capital, named precisely after the location “Katara.” This facility is a large village where culture, dining, shopping and tourism unite the Middle East with the West. Inside, in addition to the countless stores, boutiques, bars and restaurants, there was also a department store “Lafayette”, one of the most prestigious brand stores in the world which wanted to open a branch right here in Doha. In addition, a large amphitheater for theatrical and cultural events was located in the central part of Katara. Regarding the importance this country attaches to culture, sculpture installations and painting exhibitions by world-class artists have been set up in the various outdoor and indoor spaces. Among them a great friend: Mr. Ali Almimar, in my opinion one of the first and best to paint Arabian horses.
Qatar is divided into ten municipalities, and Doha is not only its capital, it is one of the nation’s major centers of interest. Many world-class sporting events, not only equestrian, take place in Doha. Of all of them, one of the most significant was this year’s “FIFA World Cup,” which saw about one million spectators. This major event revolutionized the city with renovations and embellishments that made it even more beautiful. Today the setting, the Gulf waterfront, is one of the most beautiful promenades, with palm leafshaped lights making the nightscape striking.
Doha is also home to Qatar’s largest and most important stud farm, Al Shaqab, owned by the Qatar Foundation. This stud farm is in effect an equestrian city, built to meticulous architectural and landscaping standards. It houses about 900 horses for various sports activities, stables, huge paddocks, a
horse training pool, a veterinary clinic, three covered show jumping arenas, shows and much more. Al Shaqab Stud boasts several world champions, progenitors of dominant lines, who have raised the quality the nation enjoys today in all private stables and local breeding farms. The time was not lacking and for culture lovers it was also possible to visit “The National Museum” in Doha, “The Museum of Arms,” the Souq Waqif in the city center, and within walking distance the completely renovated “Islamic Museum.” Going around the city there are many covered markets where you can buy handmade jewelry and more. These are just some of the places where you can breathe in Qatari culture and traditions. Another important symbol of Qatar’s past history is the Pearl Monument, which testifies to the importance of traditional handicrafts, one of the main activities in the area until a few years ago: pearl craftsmanship.
But let’s come to the sporting event and talk about the “Peninsula Arabian Horse Show” dedicated exclusively to pure Egyptian horses. The competitions, equestrian shows and the whole environment dedicated to the horse were the focus of a festival organized under the patronage of His Highness Emir Sheikh Tamim Bin Hamad Al Thani. The programming of the festival days began on Feb. 1 and ended on the 11th with the closing ceremony, and offered a grand spectacle within the spectacle. A special press room was set up for the Media and an entire part of the booths equipped for electronic tools and wifi dedicated exclusively to the press. To coordinate journalists, videomakers and photographers, Ms. Malika Mohammed Al-Shraim and Ms. Anu Sharma held daily reports and meetings for the best success of the event. A special thanks and praise goes to them for enabling us to do a great job this year.
During the first 3 days of the event, 170 horses competed for access to the championship by winning the various classes. A remarkable and respectable number for the pure Egyptians. Many nations participated in this third edition: Kuwait, UAE, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Palestine, Italy, Denmark, the United States, Germany and Belgium. For impartial and fair judging, 13 judges from all over the world were invited: Mr. Elyas Faraj (Bahrain), Ms. Martine Van Hee (Belgium), Mr. Ahmed Hamza (Egypt), Mr. Klaus Beste (Germany), Ms. Maria Ferraroni (Italy), Mr. Majed Al Mehyawi (Ksa), Mr. Mohamed Machmoum (Morocco), Mr. Sufian Taha Al Hussein (Palestine), Alicja Poszepczynska (Poland), Irina Stigler (Russia), Renata Schibler (Switzerland) and Mr. Ali Ghanem Al Mazrouei. Ring Master Dr. Mohammed Hammad and Dr. Mohammed Mohsen both from Egypt. For such a large number of horses, a careful and experienced
Disciplinary Committee was needed, and in this regard they were invited: Dr. Vet. Patricia Emanuelsen (Chairman of DC) from Denmark, Mr. Roberto Ceccaroni from Italy, Dr. Vet. Bassem Badr from Saudi Arabia and Dr. Vet. Yousef Abusamra from Qatar. Presenters and speakers of the show Ms Nabila Al Ali from Kuwait and Ms. Thuraya Barzan Al Tikriti from Qatar. The music that lit and accompanied the show was by a talented French DJ, Mr. Alexandre Sani. But let’s get into the heart of the competition, below you can read the names of the first two horses placed in their class. Once again this year for the third edition of the “Katara International Arabian Horse Festival” (KIAHF) a large turnout continues with a series of cultural events organized to organized by the Cultural Village Foundation - Katara under the patronage of His Highness the Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani.
The Katara Auction was held on Jan. 6th and started around 5:30 p.m. Starting from 3 p.m. the opportunity to
pay the deposit opened, which allowed buyers to be able to bid and buy.
The Katara Auction for purebred Arabian horses allows new fans to approach the show world by buying subjects that have already participated in competitions of international importance.
In the previous two editions of the festival, the auctions were a real success, and this year again there was no
shortage of staggering sales such as for the breeding right of “D SERAJ” and the embryo of “D SHIHANAH” for about 1 million euros, and others that reached considerable amounts.
The auction is also an opportunity for large horse stables to offer for sale the productions of which they already have the bloodlines, thus enabling buyers to improve their stables and breeding farms.
The big goal of the State of Qatar is the preservation and development of the Arabian horse, excellence in the equine world. Again this year, the third edition of this Katara Festival revived the glorious history of its ancient culture. Speakers for the beating of the horses were for the Arabic language Mr. NASSER GHAZALI and for the English language Mr. Scott Allman. This dual voice in the ring makes it clear how international this event is.

by Fabio Brianzoni - photos by Simone BergamaschiAn oasis in the desert, this is Al Khor Stud. As soon as we arrived, after driving 50 kilometers out of Doha, along a motorway lined with views of the desert, we arrived into a green paradise. Green pastures and paddocks covered with a soft layer of grass, all marked with flower beds completely in bloom. Nasser Al Mesnad, owner of Al Khor Stud, is an admirer of nature, and as such also of beauty and animals in general. In fact, in addition to some 50 horses, the farm had natural conservatories for gazelles, ostriches, peacocks and oryx to name but a few. The oryx for those who are not aware, is the National animal of the State of Qatar. The farm has an inhouse clinic that services every need for these animals.

PSAIAHF 2023
26-28 JANUARY A NEW LEADERSHIP IN THE SIRES OF CHAMPIONS
by Urszula Łęczycka z photos by Ewa Imielska-HebdaFor another time King Abdulaziz Arabian Horse Center in Dirab nearby Riyadh has been hosting one of the most prestigious shows in the winter season - Prince Sultan Bin Abdulaziz International Arabian Horse Festival that includes the highest ECAHO rank title show together with KSA Desert Bred horses that is very much estimated and supported by the Royal Family of the Kingdom. estival 2023 version venue is temporary changed to King Abdulaziz Arabian Horse Center -Dirab due to ongoing maintenance in the permanent location at Alkhalediah Farm.
As usual HRH Prince Fahd Bin Khaled Bin Sultan, General Supervisor of the festival, is following his father HRH Prince Khaled steps in following all aspects and details.
Mr Salah Alali Festival Manager, and Mr. Jamal Abdallah festival Operations Manager were making all efforts as usual to make the event memorable like every version. The show has been on the spot of all international Arabian horse community as it usually gathers some of the best horses residing not only in Saudi Arabia but also from neighbouring countries. The panel of judges has also been truly international with such a 10 breed experts as: Mrs Irina Stigler (IT), Mrs Helen Hennekens Van Nes (NL), Mrs Pilar Cavero Pino (ES), Mrs Sylvie Eberhardt (GER), Mrs Christine Valette (FR), Mr Murillo Kammer (BR), Mr Nashaat Hegazy (EGY), Mr Graham Smith (AU), Mr Jerzy
Białobok (PL), Mr Ebrahim Elyas Faraj (QAT).
The show has collected an amazing quality of over 200 horses from which all the top five in the classes as well as in the championships have been winning the prize money certainly worth of this high level competition. The championship day started with the classes of Desert Bred horses that appeared in a good number and quality shown by well-known international handlers. Local bred Arabian horses are continued by many of Saudi breeders and this year’s unquestionable winner was Athbah Stud that grabbed all 6 medals in fillies and colts section as well as gold medal in Senior Mares and two first medals in Senior Stallions! While Al Msn Stud took the silver in senior mares and Al Areedh Stud the bronze in this section as well as the bronze in senior stallions. After the short break the day continued with Yearling Championships where we could see mostly the new generation of Saudi bred and owned horses being the descendants of both the big show stars as well as the good selection of various sires available in Saudi Arabia nowadays. And so all the medals in the yearling fillies went to the daughters of very popular new coming sire EKS Farajj - SF Noora by own by Al Qammra
Arabian Horse Company in front of Loulwah Raghwan – bred and own by al Raghwan Stud and Katara B.K. - bronze champion bred and own by Al Khatib Stud. EKS Farajj was highly appreciated for his amazing show career and despite a relatively young age as for a sire
he has been widely used by Middle Eastern breeders so there is no surprise that also the gold and silver medalist in the yearling colts were his sons - Sari Ajmal bred and own by Ajmal Stud in front of Sahm Sarm silver medal yearling colt bred and own by Sarm Stud. What a great success of EKS Farajj and the breeders who decided to use this stallion, although it should be noted that most of the winners have been representing a various and different pedigrees on dam sides. But Saudi Arabian breeders have been lucky not only with their right choices for using EKS Farajj but also with their own homebred stallions that have been given a chance to prove themselves as successful sires. The only horse not sired by EKS Farajj to win the medal in the yearlings was Akmal Athbah bred and own by Athbah Stud and what is also important for the breeder - sired by their homebred Wajeeh Athbah, EKS Alihandro
son. Junior Fillies Championship was a great success for Al Khalediah Stables - with their gold and silver crowned fillies both sired by Hilal Al Khalediah, a son of unforgettable World Champion Banderoos - Neom Al Khalediah as gold, and Nourah Al Khalediah as silver. As bronze medal junior filly was chosen Kuwaiti bred and own Bint Rshediah Alkhashab from Al Khashab Stud - by no else stallion but EKS Farajj. Junior colts is always a promise of discovering the future sire from the group. Amongst the medal winners we saw a selection of 3 colts of very different bloodlines. The gold went to Hamed Sarm by Royal Asad bred and won by Sarm Stud in front of Thathaa Raghwan by Kanz Albidayer from Raghwan Stud and at the third podium went D Shajei - Dubai Stud bred colt by D Jernas sold to Alhadf Stud. Senior horses championships was a real delight to watch by all the breed enthusiasts. The group of several
white mares entering the arena for the finals could bring a goosebumps. The choice was not easy and results were not unanimous at all but the majority of votes went to the beautiful former World Champion Anood Al Nasser by Ashhal Al Rayyan owned by Akmal Stud in front of silver medal winner - Meshael Al Khalediah IV by El Palacio VO, representing Ajmal Stud now. Al Bakhet Stud was lucky to win in this prestigious company a bronze medal for their Teejan Al Muawd by another rising star amongst the sires - Alexxanderr. From the same sire line descended the warmly welcomed from the USA in Saudi Arabian soil - Pilatus PCF. This handsome young stallion bred by Sam Peacemaker and representing Amer Stud is sired by Exxalt a son of Excalibur, and was scored as high as 92,67 points in his class but in the championships he had to give a leadership to the show veteran bred by Knocke Arabians and owned by
Dosar Stud - Sundown K.A. by QR Marc, who was the winner at the eldest stallions class with just a bit higher note of 92,92 total. The podium in senior stallions was completed by another show veteran Hatem Athbah by EKS Alihandro for Athbah Stud its breeder and owner. A very impressive closing of the show was presenting the Platinium medals in female and male categories to two famous multichampion horses residing in Saudi Arabia - Pepita bred by Janów Podlaski Stud and sold for incredible price of 1 250 000 euro at Pride of Poland auction to represent Akmal Stud now and Emerald J - bred by Christine Jamar and representing Al Rajhiat Stud. Both horses have been warmly welcomed with applause of all the breeders and spectators - it was great to watch them both appearing in the same arena at the end of another successful PSAIAHF show. See you next year.

Alrubatiya International Arabian Horse Championship
It was a welcome surprise that a new show was announced in the Sultanate of Oman. It was also an honor to be invited as a media partner to this first edition of the “Alrubatiya International B Show” on January 20th and 21st, 2023. This show opens its doors to the entire Middle East, in fact there were numerous horses, about 114 mostly owned by small breeders in Oman and the historical stable: “Royal Cavalry,” but mostly came from the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Bahrain. The added value of the show is definitely the impeccable way in which it was organized, the commitment and love for the success of the event I think was felt by all the people involved. Moreover, this land offers a lot for those who have never been there; it is a country rich in history and extraordinarily interesting. Thanks to a short tour given to us by the organization, I was able to get a taste of the enormous natural and cultural heritage this country has to offer. Oman is an Asian state and has been a stable sultanate for many generations, current ruler is HM Sultan Haytham bin Tarik and in 2010 the UNDP (United Nations Development Program) out of 135 countries considered, ranked Oman as the state that has had the most socio-economic development in the last
forty years; the sultanate is considered one of the most developed and stable among Arab countries. The show stems from Mrs. Al Sayyda Dhabia Sami Al Busaidi’s desire and commitment to enhance and support Arabian horse breeding in her country. Thus was born the first major international show in Oman! To do this, however, required an organized staff with experience, so here she called as show manager Mrs. Fredericke Koop and Mrs. Mona Sampat Kumar as show admin manager. The list of excellent names in the world of shows continued with Dr. Nils Ismer (Germany) and Dr. Omnia Tawfeek (Egypt) for the Disciplinary Committee. Ring Master Mr. Mohamed Akl (Egypt). The voice par excellence accompanying us in the most important events is Mrs. Nabila Al Ali who with Mrs. Hawra Al Balushi made the show magical. Very nice was the musical accompaniment by Mr. Fawaz Abu Alsound. The judging was also entrusted to names who have walked in rings worldwide, such as: Mr. Josy Everars (Belgium), Mr. Elyas Faraj (Bahrain), Mr. Cristian Moschini (Italy), Mr. William Oppen (Argentina) and Mr. Sufian Taha (Palestine).

The Snow Polo World Cup St. Moritz organisers pulled out all the stops to make this year’s tournament happen; with doubts over consistent ice depth just two weeks before, the team has worked double shifts, around the clock, even using helicopters to fly in the infrastructure.
As the Godfather of Polo, Reto Gaudenzi, Founder, CEO and Vice President of Evviva Polo St. Moritz AG said “We built the venue in ten days only, with 220 tons of equipment – the equivalent to the weight of 80 elephants! We worked day and night, it’s a miracle that we finished it all and the almighty must be a polo player because he has organised perfect weather – it is cold for the ice, but sunny for the spectators and we are sold out! This has been the best polo ever – the field was fantastic, there was no wind, which means we were able to really enjoy the amazing skill of the players – what an event! We have had fantastic weather, great polo and we have sold every ticket available, the event this year was unbelievable!”.
1985 saw the first-ever polo competition and St. Moritz staging this world premiere. The Snow Polo World Cup has reigned over the last weekend in January 2023 in St. Moritz ever since.
In 2014 leading exponents of snow polo in Switzerland founded Evviva Polo St. Moritz Ltd and signed a longterm contract with the town of St. Moritz, thus securing a sustained continuation of the Snow Polo World Cup St. Moritz.
This year the sun was shining whilst some of the best polo players in the world did battle on the frozen lake. The excitement was palpable as Snow Polo World Cup the most glamorous and spectacular snow polo event in
the world reached its climax. With 250 journalists from around the world, polo enthusiasts and more than 25,500 spectators from St. Moritz and around the world, everyone expected a true clash of polo titans.
After three days of truly world-class polo, which saw nine matches played at the highest level the team Azerbaijan Land of Fire won Snow Polo World Cup St. Moritz 2023. And with this victory also comes the time for the team of 180 people who are employed to make sure the event runs with classic Swiss efficiency to say a fond farewell. Until, of course next year – make sure you join them for next year’s 39th Snow Polo World Cup St. Moritz on 26, 27 and 28 January 2024… I can assure that this is an incredible event that needs to be experienced to be believed and needs to be on everybody’s ‘to do’ list. See you then! q

Picasso di Mar
THE EUROPEAN CROWN HOLDER
Named after one of the best artists in human history, he represents the living piece of art of breeding.
Picasso di Mar, bred and proudly owned by Azienda Agricola Tre Stelle in Italy. He began his international career in 2017 as a yearling colt winning European Breeders Championships in Chantilly and following to the highest trophies in his career so far the year after – gaining 2018 European Gold Champion Colt and Italian Nationals Gold Champion Colt titles. It was not a surprise that he caught an eye of big world breeders being on lease for two years to Al Jassimya Farm. And their success has been just around the corner... Picasso di Mar has returned to the scene for the second time with big kick off– both as a show horse and as a sire. The eyes of the whole Arabian horse community focused on him as a sire in June 2021 when his beautiful daughter named not other than Perfecta Al Jassimya won the class and silver medal at the prestigious Mediterranean and Arab Countries Arabian Horse Championships in Menton scored almost 92 points. About a month after Picasso himself proudly returned to the showring with Giacomo Capacci on the lead at Spring International Arabian Horse Show in Italy. In a strong class of 8 stallions and some big names in he gained as high score as 93, 38 points with all 20 across the judges boards for head and neck and 2x20 for type. Being in his best disposition he won the gold medal in the championship before D Kaheel by Fa El Rasheem and Engulo EEA by Shanghai EA.
This perfect look and the perfect offspring of Picasso di Mar are not a coincidence. He is typical representative of his male line of Versace via his sire – Cavalli, twice silver champion in Menton as junior and senior, silver champion at Elran Cup in Belgium and gold in Arezzo and Chantilly shows. Dam of Picasso di Mar is SG Wendetta – Italian National Champion Mare, Top
Ten in Junior Mares class at World Championship in Paris. SG Wendetta represents the line of famous Michałów Stud bred mare Wernera by Tallin sold at the auction in 1993 to Scuderia Groane in Italy. She produced a beautiful and valuable stallion Wares by Piruet who has been retained for Polish breeding while leased to Michałów in 2020. Bred to a typey Egyptiansired stallion Brianz Xaver Wernera produced Wenus by Wernera – dam of exotic filly SG Wenusia by SDP Taylor. Wenusia entitled Gold Champion at Spring Show in Montefalco and class winner at Italian Nationals in 2016 happened to be a valuable mare in the breeding barn of her owners.
With World Champion Stallion Wadee Al Shaqab she produced Italian National Bronze Medal filly SG Wenere but especially well she crossed with exotic Psyrasic by Psytadel who consolidated the unique type producing SG Walentina - Gold Champion of Italian Class A Show, Top Five at European Championships, and 5th in Menton and her one year older full sister was SG Wendetta - the dam of Picasso di Mar. The success in the summer 2021 was not the last word of Picasso di Mar in the showring - in the autumn 2022 he repeated his success from European Championship once again in Lier winning his class and European Gold Champion title. In the meantime he was used on a group of a lovely broodmares of Janów Podlaski State Stud in Poland, some of them changed the ownership during Pride of Poland auction – like a beautiful Polish National Reserve Champion Filly - Basilia that is expecting her Picasso di Mar foal just now in February 2023.
While he is getting more and more popular as a sire and his large group of offspring will be born this year it may be an era of Picasso di Mar coming into the spotlight in the next months. Stay tuned! q

originality stumbles Ali Al Mimar
I had become captivated by drawing the Arabian Horses ever since I recognized and read about them. Horses have managed to find their way in which has been depicted in numerous roles experienced over time. In my work, I try to paint them with human characteristics by giving them an emotional effect. Not only this, I illustrate and deliver their marvelous visual meanings of pride and human pain through silent neighing. When I present and address that term, I try to move away from the direct concept to freer spaces with a mixture of dreams in expression and a balanced flow between colors and techniques. This is in addition to one of the essential elements that, in its entirety, constitute an extension and an interrelated succession of works with what precedes it. One of the most prominent examples that can be explained perfectly is “The Horse Stumbles”.
I have tried to find another aspect of spiritual communication between the honorable person and “The Horse Stumbles”. That person who searches for ethics and justice in this world, and what this fall or Stumble symbolizes means a lot of symbolic or expressive implications in our heritage.
It is a reference to the repeated fall of some lofty principles and meanings in the personality of the noble knight, embodied by the same horse that we have lost in the maze of our contemporary material world.
I personally paint originality and chivalry at a time when all meanings of chivalry were lost”. q

The “Fattoria Collina d’Oro “(Golden Hill Farm) located on the Golden Hill by the Lake of Lugano is the small oasis I founded in 1997 breeding Arabian horses. Actually not only Arabian horses and not only breeding. I breed Purebred Arabians as well as Straight Egyptians here. Today, 19 horses are stabled on the farm, two of them Anglo-Arabians and all of them accompanied by a lot of other animals such as two donkeys, more than a dozen Tibetan goats, and numerous other species and pets. The
frame offered by green pastures and woodlands gives the animals even more than an enormously high quality of living: they also get a premium view of the lake.
My passion for horses began when I was 7 years old, no one in my family encouraged me, it was born that way and that’s all I could talk about.
I was lucky enough to realise my big dream: to live with my horses and start breeding Arabians. It wasn’t as easy as writing this, like all great dreams to achieve it I went through a lot, but I’m still here.
I do almost everything by myself: show preparation, breaking in and training, equine physiotherapy, and rehabilitation of horses with physical and psychological problems.
I manage everything at 360 degrees around me - from the water pipe connections, to which nails to buy, to organizing the tractor overhaul; to horse management, training, and breeding; to property management, finances etc etc etc; I raise my mares by myself, break them in, train them, mate them with my stallion, I am present when they give birth, raise the foals, train them, break them in, and so on. It’s just the line of work you choose when you breed for generations in a stud. I think it’s better not to delegate much. And for a woman it is not easy anyway, even with employees. In all the roles I have never had any particular problems with men, except - and this is no small thing - in the daily management of employees, specifically stable men. It’s hard to find someone who really does it for passion, and I admit that it’s harder for a woman to be respected, and it’s hard for men (depending on their brain) to accept orders or to know less than a woman. This is why
I stay in contact with my animals as much as possible. Unfortunately in 2011 I suffered a serious accident due to an unjustified attack by a stallion for reasons that are still unknown.
As a result of the accident I lost the mobility of my left hand (the dominant one for me) and my wrist by 70 per cent, permanently.
From the window of the hospital during my recovery I could see a stable where the horses were being ridden, and beyond the hill on the horizon I knew that there were all my beloved Arabian horses waiting for me... I hardly ever cry, but at the time the tears often flowed because I didn’t know if I would ever be able to ride or at least handle them again.
I never gave up for them! In fact, after a year of intensive physiotherapy, I was still able to write with my hand and get on the saddle. It was like living again!
Even the doctors can’t explain how it’s possible and are amazed at how a human body can react and adapt to new circumstances. But deep down I know that it’s thanks to love, true passion. That is the real strength.
Horses and my farm are part of my DNA. I cannot even imagine a life without my animals anymore.
Today my life is entirely dedicated to horses. I would say that they are the ones who manage my life.
I am quite precise and thorough, so there is always plenty to do, for the horses as well as for external maintenance. It’s not easy for me and not even for those who work alongside me, but the welfare and cleanliness of the horses are the priorities for me. I really want them not to lack anything. I would say they are all pretty spoiled, but in the end, they do everything I ask them to do. Working with them gives me a lot of satisfaction. I couldn’t imagine my life without horses, they are part of my DNA.
I am quite proud to have bred some black offspring that earn excellent scores in shows and are successful otherwise too; which is because they have a lightness overall, and short and rather modern heads. But I don’t have Egyptians only, I have several Egyptian-related Arab horses, and two Anglo Arabians that I care a lot about, offspring of my great love HAREM. I like all my horses very much, regardless of the success they have in the show or under the saddle.
As far as Egyptian horses are concerned, I must tell that I am not a great expert of lines. I rather work according to what I see, although I do not even choose the color. By pure chance, my five Egyptians are black. I look at their characteristics in general, with strong points and weak points included, and try to give them a stallion who can improve their progeny. Basically it’s not easy to breed blacks who are elegant and typey. Mine turned out quite well, however: they have beautiful small heads with a wellexpressed dish, they have strong bodies, and both of them are great movers. Regardless of color, I prefer type and charisma. I am not prejudiced against particular Egyptian lines. I get my orientation from the official definitions of Straight Egyptians by the Egyptian State Stud and the Pyramid Society.
For me it’s essential that every single horse is trained to the saddle, in addition to the show work. The mares here are broken in for riding before they are covered for the first time. The same is true for the stallions before they are allowed to mate. In my opinion, that’s a bit like school for children and young people, which serves to create a certain discipline, as well as some extra motivation in their lives. I find that for a horse to be alone in the pasture, or their box stall, or to run their circles on the lounging line – it’s got to be terribly boring. However, training takes experience and competence, of course. A show horse who is or was also ridden needs to be trained in a correct manner and outline, meaning we can’t lounge
him with his head in the air. We would ruin his back muscles that way, and not only that, the neck would also change in a negative way, a ewe neck will easily form. I’m sure you understand why it’s not easy to just hand a horse over to somebody for show training, without applying certain standards of quality.
At the moment I can’t breed more than I do, because I don’t have any more box stalls available. Sounds odd, maybe, but it’s true. I would have to sell horses, but that’s a challenge for me emotionally, as I need to be entirely convinced they will get a good new home. I am not very good at selling a horse, I can screw it all up if the person or the new place doesn’t convince me. So I live on passion as long as I can.
And I try to spread my passion as much as possible. I tried in many ways to promote Arabian horses in my country with interviews in television programs etc, but unfortunately here in Switzerland most people here have a false picture of Arabian horses. They have a reputation for being difficult to ride, and to be too small for many people – to sum things up in two keywords. Luckily, among us fans of Arabian horses, we understand each other and laugh because we know that the warmblood riders don’t know what they are missing. I tried to breed quality offspring, but even so few people know how to distinguish between a typey and a non-typey head. Maybe they are more color-oriented. But I must emphasize that great demands are made on the qualities of Arabian horses under saddle, ignoring their proper intrinsic qualities. Those who choose Arabian horses, choose them simply as their bestlife companions.
I have a background as an athlete, lots of sport from childhood, even at competitive levels, and the good fortune to have spent years in close contact with great athletes, trainers and physiotherapists of a great Italian football team. With them and from that experience I learned a lot, certainly that you need discipline, sacrifice, perseverance and athletic training.
I personally believe that laziness does not go hand in hand with success.
Success requires passion, love, dedication, sacrifices. And also luck!. q www.haremstud.com www.hglamours.com www.fattoriacollinadoro.ch

Comunicare la Passione Communicating the Passion Mario Brunetti
The work of the graphic designer in the complex world of Purebred Arabians between tradition and innovation
In Italy in the early 1990s when I decided to publish the ASIL Book IV of the Asil Club with its 970 pages, I was looking for a suitable graphic designer for the layout and artwork. The subject of the book was the Arabian horse, its cultural history and its representation in art and painting in the areas of its original breeding, the Arabian Peninsula. I knew Mario Brunetti from various joint cultural projects. At that time, he was already a first choice graphic artist in connection with the Spoleto “Festival of the Two Worlds” and municipal public relations. Spoleto is now kept on the UNESCO World Heritage List, with the cooperation of Mario’s and his works of visibility.
The Asil book was a great success and the next step was to start advertising Arabian horse breeding in Europe and especially Italy. Advertising at that time was exclusively analogue manual work and appeared in specialised magazines and books. Advertising primarily served to inform readers about events with horses. Or it was meant to draw attention to a stud and motivate visits to the stud. In the past, one had to plan several
visits to a stud in order to find a stallion. Today, advertising comes non-stop to our smartphones, and computers because horse breeding has long since become part of the
digital business. Accordingly, the craft of graphics has changed, and it is only digital technology that makes new ways of marketing quickly possible. The content is still about horses but a good graphic designer needs to know the change in public opinion about the appreciation of Arabian horses.
“Hi, I’m Mahmoud, I saw your mare on Instagram, how much is she? Send me pictures and videos via WhatsApp!” We get messages like this or something similar from all over the world these days, as fans, breeders, trainers, poor and rich owners and their grooms communicate day and night, around the globe. The times are over when the neighbours came with the mare to be covered or when horses were sold at the Open Day. In principle, Arabian shows, horse by horse, have long since been moved to online social media. This is also
Tuttavia,
reflected in the real world of horse breeding. Today, the neighbour and breeders from around the world, can buy the covering on the internet after seeing photos and advertisements of the stallion and his offspring on Instagram, Facebook and other social media. Frozen semen of a dream stallion may easily be sent from continent to continent.
The globalisation of the Arabian horse market has made equine photography and highly specialised graphics necessary. A beautiful graphic online or in the remaining print media, is the worldwide door opener, because without access to the international markets there is no refinancing of the analogue work around one’s own horses today.
Advertising represents “reality”, its amplifier and accelerates the economic and aesthetic change of horse breeding through the fast data streams on the internet. However, one does this in both a positive and negative sense. It is an advantage that advertising online is largely free of charge and is necessary to ensure that the stud and its horses are seen internationally. In the past only the big stud farms could afford to place advertising pages in Arabian magazines. Today every breeder, rider or simply lover of horses can advertise for free via social networks. However, the pictures and the advertising must be good, because in the mass of posts, horse and owner must attract attention in a positive sense. This is when a good graphic artist is invaluable. The disadvantage is that visits to stud farms to see and get to know the horses live are no longer a matter of course. This is a pity, because it is not only a matter of checking whether the pictures in the advertisements are true, but because otherwise we lose sight of a very important factor in the decision-making process. The good thing is that the nature of the Arabian horse cannot be experienced through the transition to the digital age.
bellezza.
Mario Brunetti was fascinated by the beauty of Arabian horses. He did not want to own them, but he filled his digital archives with art-historical paintings and photographs of Arabian horses so that he could always have them at hand as part of his work.
Commissioned by Tutto Arabi magazine, Brunetti designed a series on horses in the history of art over the last 2000 years. Together we produced reports on the origins, the course of history and the performing arts of Arabian horses in Morocco, Pakistan, Albania, Italy, Kuwait, Bahrain and other countries.
Today’s horse photography and advertising is comparable to fashion photography in its methodology and function. Horses, especially show and breeding stallions, are supposed to symbolise longings for freedom and wildness, but also fertility and beauty. In the diverse advertising that Brunetti creates for this purpose, creative graphic art is kept in the foreground. The horse’s personality is preserved, or even underlined, as is its background.
“A Picture can say more than a thousand words” is the motto. Brunetti loves to design a stud logo. By making minimal changes over time, he creates excitement while maintaining a recognisable effect.
The brand is the key to remembering previous advertisements and accompanies the horses for generations. It includes the prefix in the name of the horses to show customers the way to the right horses in the jungle of images and information. All in all, there has long been an increasing
Mario Brunetti è diventato il nostro grafico, che ha dato alla rivista un'interfaccia grafica professionale. tendency in the print and online media of the Arabian “Horse Industry” to neglect facts and figures and instead focus on advertising and images. Entertainment through imagery is perfectly suited to the horse world. Brunetti picks up on this, but processes the imagery in an honest and historical way. Information is kept in the foreground again. In 2008, the ANICA (national agency of Italy for Arabian horses) decided to create a quarterly Arabian horse magazine for its members. Mario Brunetti became our graphic designer, who gave the magazine a professional graphic interface. After many designs and articles for Desert Heritage Magazine, Tutto Arabi and other magazines, in 2012 Dr. Nagel, former President of WAHO, Mario Brunetti and I founded a publishing company, Nawal Media, dedicated

to publications about the breeding, history and culture of Arabian horses. In 2013 we produced and published the 560 page book The Arabian Horse - Nature’s Creation and the Art of Breeding by Dr Hans Nagel in three languages.
only the media and their professionals will be able to turn a good horse into a world-famous icon, while the horse itself can relax and eat at home in the pasture.
Today, the economic situation of most European stud farms is critical. Home-made problems as well as the negative effects of the globalisation of the markets are the reasons. In addition, keeping and reproducing Arabian horses according to today’s standards is much more expensive than the possible income from breeding. Only by reducing to quality breeding can there be survival in Europe. Small but Beautiful could be the motto for breeding. For this, professional public relations and good advertising will be necessary for survival.
Quattro domande a / four Questions to mario Brunetti
Why have you been representing arabian horses in the world of graphics and art for 30 years?
The passion arose naturally from a professional meeting with you who were then working for a major German company, active in the field of European projects. Working with you, it was inevitable to discover your horses and, little by little, the glittering world of Arabian purebreds. A world with many faces: the glossy and somewhat snobbish one of contemporary shows and the much more interesting one made of history and millenary traditions and knowledge, of love for beauty and harmony, the authentic cultural values that these animals express.
What is the meeting point between arabian horses, history and art?
For a draughtsman, portraying a horse is a major stumbling block: its complex anatomy is frightening, but then leafing through art history books you come across the galloping horsemen of the Parthenon or the studies of Leonardo da Vinci, the fantastic watercolours of Eugene Delacroix, Carle Vernet or Alfred de Dreux, to name but a few, and you discover that few subjects have ever fascinated artists as much as horses, and in particular the Arabian with its incomparable grace and harmony. The encounter between art and Arabian horses is a long story worth exploring and publicising.
What is the role of advertising or a brand today in the international commercial world of arabian horses?
Communication is an ever-evolving galaxy that daily considers the demands of those who produce and offer but also those of the end user, the community. This exchange does not always take place in a positive way. Like all languages, the language of communication can fall short in the form as well as in the content of the message, it can be elegant or sloppy, emphasise ‘healthy’ concepts or indulge in clichés and stereotypes. From a theoretical point of view, good communication should be ethically

honest, not lying. In my work I try to apply these concepts and not state things that are obvious and taken for granted, but express them at the highest possible ‘high’ level, without the fear of being misunderstood, language must be enhanced to avoid flattening and banality. Communication in the world of Arabian horses is, with due exceptions, of good quality even if rather standard, so it is important to raise the level of language with elegance and attention to detail.
What role can the graphic designer play to support breeders in promoting the arabian horse in the future?
The graphic designer is first and foremost a designer, his task is to plan the breeders’ communication strategy in the best possible way, directing it to express valid messages. Clear language and elegant aesthetics are, perhaps, the right tools to enhance the qualities and cultural peculiarities of this breed. Breeders must arm themselves with this enormous baggage of tradition and history, aware of the great responsibility they have in preserving and enhancing the extraordinary uniqueness of the Arabian horse.
