The Arabian Horse Festival (JAWADI) Second Edition
SAUDI BREEDERS CUP 2nd EDITION
by Lina Abu Shmais z photos by Athbah Arts
The Arabian Horse Festival ( JAWADI) Second Edition concluded on the evening of Saturday, January 6, 2024, after two exhilarating days at the Jump Saudi venue in Al Janadriyah, Riyadh. Organized and implemented by Athbah Arts, the festival included the launch of Saudi Breeders Cup Second Edition, organized by the Arabian Horse Organization (AHO) whose Board of Directors is chaired by His Royal Highness Prince Abdulaziz bin Ahmed bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, and supervised by King Abdulaziz Arabian Horse Center, in which a total of 200 Arabian horses and 113 breeders and owners competed for the gold, silver and bronze, cheered on by an audience of Arabian horse fans. The prizes of the first day of the show were awarded to winners by His Excellency the Minister of Sports, His Royal Highness Prince Abdulaziz bin Turki Al Faisal. Among those who attended the festival was also a number of esteemed guests and prominent figures.
In addition to the Arabian horse show, the festival housed a myriad of activities that satisfied the taste of every visitor. At the entrance, visitors were greeted with an elegant modern art sculpture of a jumping horse, next to it stood an art gallery where talented Saudi artists displayed their passionate work that captured the enchanting beauty of the Arabian horse. Just to the right of the entrance was the lavishly furnished “Diwaniyat Athbah”, a traditional lounge flowing with aesthetics embodying the authentic Saudi culture where visitors lounged and enjoyed the generous hospitality with a cup of freshly made aromatic Saudi coffee and dates of the highest quality. Visitors were also treated to a bountiful variety of restaurants, coffee shops, and stores, as they enjoyed several live performances by a Saudi folklore band who marched around the venue singing with their traditional instruments, adding an air of cheerful celebration to the festival.

ATHBAH ARTS AND JAWADI Athbah Arts is the culmination of over ten years of achievements by Athbah Stud. Its main goal is to preserve the heritage of the Arabian horse by enhancing its stature, raising awareness and educating the public about all aspects related to equestrianism. Athbah Arts thus seeks to design and create purposeful and innovative equestrian entertainment events and festivals that manifest the combined beauty of purebred Arabian horses and Saudi history and heritage, and meet the aspirations of society in line with the ambitious Vision 2030.
In 2022, in the heart of Diriyah, a place vivid with rich Saudi history, Athbah Arts conceived JAWADI, which became the largest event for purebred Arabian horses in Saudi Arabia as part of Riyadh Season 2022.

JAWADI is a captivating world where equestrianism meets entertainment in a cultural celebration of Saudi heritage; it aims to enhance the status of the purebred Arabian horse, and support the national product and talent of all kind. Through JAWADI, Athbah Arts is able to connect artists, performers and local business owners with Arabian horse fans and breeders, and build a platform for them to show their work and products, share their passions, and celebrate the deep-rooted Saudi heritage and the illustrious Arabian horse. In 2023, with the launch of the second edition of JAWADI, Athbah Arts yet again proved its aptitude as a designer and implementer of equestrian entertainment events that meet the aspirations of society. Driven by a vigorous vision and keen eye for detail, Athbah

In 2023, following the success of the first edition, AHO launched the second Saudi Breeders Cup, organized by AHO under the supervision of the King Abdulaziz Arabian Horse Center and implemented by Athbah Arts as part of The Arabian Horse Festival Second Edition ( JAWADI 2023). Just like its precursor, the second edition of Saudi Breeders Cup saw a great success and even greater turnout from Saudi breeders and owners of Arabian horses. q

Arts continues its zealous endeavor to create unique and memorable experiences for people of all ages and backgrounds. AHO AND THE SAUDI BREEDERS CUP The Arabian Horse Organization was founded in late 2010 by His Royal Highness Prince Abdulaziz bin Ahmed bin Abdulaziz Al Saud. It is a non-profit organization concerned with the purebred Arabian horse, its breeders and owners, operating by the ethos “In the service of Arabian horse breeders”. Since its establishment, AHO has sought to organize shows, cultural activities, and programs that aim to motivate and educate Arab breeders of Arabian horses to develop their breeding skills, and preserve and enhance the Arabian horse’s cultural and historical significance. Perhaps what most distinguishes the organization is that it is the first on the international level to sanction and regulate championships for breeders of purebred Arabian horses. AHO thus founded a new scoring system that guarantees clarity, transparency and equality of opportunity to participants, allowing them to obtain judges’ evaluations on a technical level to help them improve their breeding techniques.
In 2022, AHO held one of its largest shows during Riyadh Season 2022 in Diriyah, the “Saudi Breeders Cup” in its first edition as part of the Riyadh Arabian Horse Festival JAWADI 2022 by Athbah Arts. The show was a remarkable success in the local breeder community and was considered the first of its kind in Saudi Arabia. It was received with a strong acclamation and saw a passionate turnout from Saudi studs.

PSAIAHF 2024 25-27 JANUARY
PRINCE SULTAN BIN ABDULAZIZ INTERNATIONAL ARABIAN HORSE FESTIVAL by Simone Leo z photos by Simone Bergamaschi
Once again, this year the International Title Show in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia that for us used to be “Al Khalediah Festival” and since the year 2012 the names known as “PSAIAHF” (Prince Sultan bin Abdulaziz International Arabian Horse Festival), once again the location is confirmed at Dirab King Abdulaziz Arabian Horse Center (KAAHC), Riyadh, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.
Ten judges from all over the world were invited to judge the approximately 200 horses entered in the show: Mrs. Claudia Darius (Germany), Mr. Koenraad Detailleur (Belgium), Mr. Ahmed Hamza (Egypt), Mr. Zico Guardia (Brazil), Mr. Mohamed Oussidhoum (Morocco), Mr. Marek Trela (Poland), Mr. Eric Gear (France), Mr. Cristian Moschini (Italy), Mr. Greg Gallun (USA), and Mr. Ali Ghanem Al Mazrouei (UAE).
This wonderful location is 30 km from Riyadh in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, but of the beauty and magnificence of this center and its historicity I have already written in the article in the February issue.
The show took place in complete serenity and harmony with perfect timing, which demonstrates the quality and professionalism of all organizing staff. This show is certainly the most important in Saudi Arabia, both for the historicity of the event but also for the massive participation of the entrants. The Prize money is also very high. Thanks to the generosity of His Highness Prince Sultan bin Abdulaziz, the even gives breeders and owners who have only recently started in the show world the opportunity to present themselves internationally.
This show took place from 25 to 27 January, 2024 and a sunny and spring-like climate contributed to the event’s usual success. The Arabian horse world will always have to thank the promoter of this show, who for many years has continued the tradition and passed on the family love for the Arabian horse: HRH Prince Khaled bin Sultan bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, Chairman of the show and HRH Prince Fahad bin Khaled bin Sultan bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, General Supervisor of the show. Praise for the excellent work of the Festival Manager: Mr. Salah Al Ali. And Mr. Hakim Abdul Subhan, Festival Operations Manager. The only European Dcs was Dr. Nils Ismer (Germany) together with Mr. Turki Mohammed AlMuqbel, Dr. Bassem Badr, Eng. Obadah Zabadi and Mr. Saad Abdullah Alqassim. The Ringmaster from Egypt the now very experienced Dr. Mohammed Hammad. The ringing voice of Mrs. Nabilah Al Ali gave the show the right liveliness as always.
The prize money for the show is more than two million Euro, a good breeding programme is fostered on a national level. But that’s not all, there are also Desert Bred in the Festival Programme, they have always been there, perhaps even before international shows were held. That is why they also have a reserved space within the days and also a prize money for the each Championships. Now I leave you with what will make you realize how much this show was appreciated by everyone, the pictures taken by our photographer Simone Bergamaschi. q www.tuttoarabi.com - TUTTO ARABI | 61

The Class of ‘58 n by Joseph Ferriss
Article published with the kind permission of Ar a b i a n Es s e n c e
In the previeus article published on Tutto Arabi n.5/2022 about the class of 1956 I pointed out the irony of Nazeer being one of the most heavily used sires in 1956 yet only two of his get would be used for breeding, Morafic and Alaa El Din. We all know how that turned out. These two sons alone could have put Nazeer on the world map of Arabian horses for decades. In 1956 the EAO managed to produce 32 foals but as world politics and economics continued to vary, only 26 foals were produced at the EAO in 1958. Interestingly that same year a young and enthusiastic couple from America met and married in Turkey and began their adventures
throughout the Middle East which would eventually bring them to visit the EAO. That couple was Don and Judi Forbis. Another American had already visited the EAO in 1956 in search of more Arabian bloodlines to go with his foundation mare and that American was Richard Pritzlaff. His 5 EAO purchases were put aboard ship in 1958 and arrived in America bearing the first of Nazeer blood to reach US shores. Europeans were also visiting the EAO so clearly there was a growing interest in the Arabians being produced there and one name was considered a main attraction and that was Nazeer.
Three famous Nazeer yearlings born in 1958 among the “year of Nazeer” who would become influential world-wide, left to right, Ansata Ibn Halima, Ansata Bint Mabrouka and Ansata Bint Zaafarana

Looking back at the foals born at the EAO, without a doubt 1958 was Nazeer’s year. He was the sire of 19 colts and fillies, and there were even already 4 grandget of Nazeer produced. The other sires had to be content with only one or two each, with Gassir being the sire of 2, Badr the sire of 1, Sameh the sire of 1, and Mashhour the sire of 1 foal. Some horses from the
disbanded Inshass stud were being bred nearby the EAO facility under supervision and this resulted in two foals sired by the Inshass stallion Abboud, one of which, a filly named Wedad, would go on to establish a respected family in Europe based on her daughter Bint Wedad (Hassan x Wedad) who had 15 foals, most in Europe and later in Israel.
Ramses Fayek, (Nazeer x Fayza II) known as Fayek in Egypt was the first-born son of Nazeer in 1958. He would become a much admired sire of champions. Forbis photo.

So what became of the Nazeer get from the class of 1958? Of his 10 sons, 6 would be used for breeding and their names read like a “hall of fame” list now. The first born Nazeer son that year was none other than the very handsome Ramses Fayek (x Fayza II) known as Fayek in Egypt. First an important sire for renowned AlBadeia Stud, Ramses Fayek was later imported to the U.S. by Martin Loeber who gave him a great opportunity at stud resulting in a number
of National Champions and other admired show winners descending from him. Nazeer’s next sire of note from the class of 1958 was Waseem (x Malaka) who was also an important sire for AlBadeia Stud. Among his most famous is the lovely Malekat El Gamal, whose granddaughter, Sundar Alisayyah produced the incomparable Al Adeed Al Shaqab.

Just 3 days after Waseem was born, another fine grey colt was foaled with particular class and style. He would become a political gift from Egypt to Russia for its financial and construction support in building the great Aswan dam in Egypt. The dam gave Egypt resources for much needed economic improvement and this colt, who was born as Rafaat but later renamed Aswan, became a symbol of the great dam.
He was out of the splendid producing mare Yosreia and the success of this cross would be repeated 5 times at the EAO. Aswan would become one of the largest patriarchies in the Arabian breed, without ever having left any legacy within straight Egyptian bloodlines. In Russia he would leave many sons and daughters which would make there way into the vast majority of Arabian bloodlines today.
Aswan, (Nazeer x Yosreia) seven-eights brother to his “classmate” Ansata Ibn Halima, Aswan’s role in Russia would make him one of the leading sire lines in the world today. Forbis archive.

Once more Nazeer would prove to be an impressive international influence when in March of 1958 an elegant colt was born and given the name Kaysoon [Kaisoon]. He would be exported to Germany and create a stir there for his unusual elegance and refinement for an Arabian stallion, which was not seen in Europe. It is interesting to note that because of his particular exotic type of elegance, it has been
said that the general horse public did not know how to accept him. This fate was similar to the arrival of Morafic on U.S. shores who was also a very exotic horse like not ever before seen during their time. It should come as no surprise since genetically Morafic and Kaisoon were 87.5% related to each other. In time Kaisoon would prove his worth at stud and his blood is now much admired internationally.
Kaisoon (Nazeer x Bint Kateefa) his extreme refinement and elegance was somewhat shocking to Europeans at the time but he grew to become a very important sire. Forbis archive.

A few more Nazeer sons were born in 1958, one in particular was the very beautiful Ibn Bukra (x Bukra) who raced well but died before being used. Nazeer’s son Nader was foaled in 1958 and he also sired for AlBadeia stud but left only a few foals. However, Nader when bred to his companion Noha, also a product of the class of 1958, the result was the great broodmare Serenity Bint Noha. imported to North America by Hansi Melnyk. Nader also sired the influential German imported sire El Hilal GASB (x Ameena) whose daughter Bint Bint Basima established a family at Alfala Stud in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.
As the year of 1958 was drawing to a close, one more colt sired by Nazeer would be born in the fall. By anyone’s standards he was a handsome dark steel grey foal of noted quality and marked by the most deep dark expressive eyes one can imagine. That special look stayed with him throughout his entire life and endeared many to him and led to the popular phrase “that Halima look”. The colt’s name in Egypt was Ibn Halima and he was exported as a yearling to the U.S., along with two fillies from the class of 1958, Bint Mabrouka and Bint Zaafarana all sired by Nazeer. These three yearlings became the foundation for the Ansata Arabian Stud.
Ansata Ibn Halima (Nazeer x Halima) the last born Nazeer son from the class of 1958 he would become one of the most beloved Arabians in America and later a sought after name internationally. Jerry Sparagowski photo.

BLOODLINE
If 1958 was Nazeer’s year as described by the legacies of the above stallions, it is interesting to realize that of the 9 fillies sired by Nazeer in 1958, eight of them were used for breeding. Among these future queens were the aforementioned Ansata Bint Mabrouka and Ansata Bint Zaafarana. While Ansata Bint Mabrouka did not have a long life and left no daughters, all 3 of her sons are “hall of famers” with Ansata Ibn Sudan being U.S. National champion, and all 3 sons found in many international champions. Ansata Bint Zaafarana has both sons and daughters to represent her and is a part of the beloved Glorieta line so admired in the Arabian gulf region.
Bint Maisa El Saghira (Nazeer x Maisa) as a yearling in Egypt. Like Bint Mona, she would become one of the most globally influential mares largely via her son Shaikh Al Badi, sire of Ruminaja Ali and many others. Forbis photo.

Ansata Bint Mabrouka had a full sister in blood in the form of Bint Mona (Nazeer x Mouna). Bint Mona was also born in 1958 as was Bint Maisa El Saghira (Nazeer x Maisa) both being imported by the Marshalls of Gleannloch Farms. When one considers that Bint Mona produced The Egyptian Prince (x Morafic) and Bint Maisa El Saghira
produced Shaikh Al Badi (x Morafic), the heavy use of both of these stallions and their being a part of the pedigree of Thee Desperado, the most heavily used straight Egyptian sire in the world, it is easy to see that just by this example Bint Mona and Bint Maisa Saghira have a huge impact worldwide on Arabian breeding.

One final Nazeer daughter from the class of 1958 deserves special mention and that is the mare Bint Om El Saad who will be forever immortalized in her magnificent U.S. National Champion daughter Serenity Sonbolah (x Sameh). The role that Serenity Sonbolah would play in the Serenity breeding program, the Imperial breeding program and the Zichy Thyssen breeding program as well as others has assured her name in the rolls of great Arabian mares who have influence on the breed internationally.
We have talked about the class of 1958 from the EAO, but what about the two private breeders of that year, Hamdan Stud and AlBadeia Stud? As mentioned in the last newsletter, the Hamdan stud was building up its early herd from the 3 lovely Tahawi bred mares and again in 1958 each had a foal with Bint Barakat producing the stallion Baricat, Futna produced the mare Rhita, who was retained for breeding by Hamdan, and Folla produced Durra who went to the Police Academy for breeding.
Serenity Sonbolah (Sameh x Bint Om El Saad), this unforgettable U.S. National Champion mare would be her mother’s claim to fame making Bint Om El Saad another important Nazeer daughter from the class of 1958. Johnny Johnston photo.

AlBadeia Stud, as already mentioned would later be using a number of Nazeer sons from the class of 1958. As for horses produced in 1958 at AlBadeia, the stud bred its mare Zabia/Zobeya to the EAO stallion Gassir and got the filly El Aziza. She would eventually become a founding mare at Babolna in
Europe and is famous as the female line of World Champion 218 Elf Layla Walayla B, who is the dam of muti-international champion El Nabila B. The other 1958 foal at Albadeia was the mare Bushra sired by Serenity Ibn Nazeer x Zahia. Bushra is found in numerous pedigrees of French bred Arabians today.

So all things considered even though fewer Arabian foals were produced in Egypt in 1958, that year will go down as one which was to produce many legends that are now a part of Arabian breeding worldwide. Just one example is Al Adeed Al Shaqab who is a product of four from the class of 1958, Ansata Ibn
Halima, Ansata Bint Mabrouka, Bint Maisa El Saghira and Waseem. Even famed sires Marwan Al Shaqab and WH Justice benefit from the class of 1958 within their pedigrees. And there are many other examples making 1958 truly a year to remember.

VERSATILITY OF ARABIAN HORSE
use of The
ARABIAN
horses text by Maria Bemong z Tutto Arabi archive
For many people Arabian horses are associated just with the beauty. Kind of art to be admired and watched over, the pleasure of experiencing something sophisticated and unique that people can feed their senses with. Sadly many times it is forgotten how Arabian horses can be powerful and what a wide spectrum of their use there is. Arabian Horses proved themselves to be wonderful saddled horses, their intelligence make them extremely trainable, they are very strong physically as also mentally with huge spirit of fighting. Arabian Horses are characterised with highest level of stamina from all the breeds, and small demands in feeding make them surviving at most extreme conditions. Surely it is not realised by many, that the efficiency of using a feed among Arabian horses is three times better then at warmbloods. That means for the same amount of work Arabians need three times less food. This feature undoubtedly comes from their originary habitat where they had to survive in hot deserts of the Arabian Peninsula. The use of Arabian horses under saddle covers many disciplines, probably this is the only breed that can
152 | TUTTO ARABI - www.tuttoarabi.com
be used in so many different ways. Starting with the widest and most popular endurance races, as well as speed races on the racetracks, going through many pleasure classes, western reining and trails, cross country, ending on strict classic disciplines like dressage or show jumping. Surely Arabian Horses are the most successful in endurance, there is no other breed that can keep running for several hours more than 160 km. Arabians have amazing capability of recuperation that probably makes them so irreplaceable in this discipline. Overall we might talk about many disciplines but we must always remember that Arabian horses are wonderful riding horses just for pleasure, they are our companions so we will never be bored while going to hack out with them. Perhaps Arabian horses have as many lovers as haters, we cannot make everybody loving Arabians but undoubtedly the one who had worked and trained Arabian horses will remain in love with them forever. Due to their amazing trainability and intelligence and the most honest heart ever, these horses are capable to do any performance and break any stereotypes. “Keep calm and ride Arabians”. q

Egypt has been recognized as one of the first countries to have introduced horse racing. Historically, horses were used in battle as early as the 17th Dynasty and following the invasion of Hyksos during the period known as the Middle Kingdom in Ancient Egypt. Beside the wars with horses and chariots, hunting was a common occupation. Hence, a retrospective look emphasizes a profound interest in preserving this noble creature in ancient times. The ancient Egyptians knew horses since the Stone Age, and rock drawings recorded pictures of horses. These majestic creatures were so much loved and prized possession for the Egyptian elite, particularly the Pharaoh. Although Pharaoh rarely shared the credit for a victory with people, Ramses II mentions his horses in the Poem of Kadesh, acknowledging them for their part in the famous Kadesh battle. Hence, due to their value in royal culture, in battle and hunting purposes, some historians pointed out

that breeding horses was a common practice in Ancient Egypt. At the beginning of the nineteenth century, another chapter has begun in horse breeding with Muhammad Ali Pasha, the founder of Modern Egypt and the Dynasty which ruled Egypt from the beginning of the 19th century until the middle of the 20th century. Muhammad Ali Pasha, knowing well the strength and power of Arabian horses as an important war instrument, decided to build the finest Arabian horse breeding program Egypt had ever experienced. He imported around 1100 Arabians from the best horses of the Arabian Peninsula and stabled them at Shoubra stables. Abbas Pasha, grandson of Muhammad Ali Pasha, followed the same concept of his grandfather and succeeded to make his own collection of finest Arabian horses from the desert of Arabia. His horses were very well kept in palaces and became legendary horses to the

extent that some people said to rival those of King Solomon! This passion and love for Arabian horses were transmitted to their descendants. Apart Aly Pasha Chérif and Lady Anne-Blunt, most of the influential Egyptian horse breeders were from the royal family such as the Khedive Abbas Helmy II, Prince Ahmed Kamal, Prince Muhammad Ali Tawfiq as well as Prince Kamal Al Din- Hussein. In 1908, the Animal Breeding Department of the Royal Agricultural Society was assigned to start breeding purebred Arabian horses at Bahtim farm, and in 1928 the Society purchased around 60 acres in Kafr Farouk in the Ain Shams desert, east of Cairo in order to create a farm with similar conditions to the natural environment of Arab horses. The Horses had to move to the new farm known as El Zahraa farm affiliated to the Royal Agricultural Society (RAS) later on, renamed the Egyptian Agricultural Organization (EAO). After the collapse of the Egyptian Kingdom in 1952, the Royal stud of King Farouk “Inshass Stud” was dissolved and a very small and carefully selected group of horses were introduced into the existing herd of El Zahraa horses. Since that time, the legendary Zahraa farm is considered as the only existing state stud farm in Egypt and no further horses were allowed to enter the breeding program. Few years later, the quality of horses bred out of this closed breeding program received world acclaim and many modern breeders from the Unites States and Europe decided to acquire such bloodlines. This being said, one has noticed in the last few years a rising interest from public authorities concerning the well-being and preservation of Straight Egyptian Arabian horses. In this respect, the government has built recently a new state stud facility for El Zahraa horses based on modern international standards in the new Administrative Capital of Egypt located East of Cairo. The project is surrounded by a new race track and many land parcels offered for sale to private breeders. As a matter of fact, the
160 | TUTTO ARABI - www.tuttoarabi.com
project seems to be a priority on the government agenda according to the Egyptian local press. The relocation expected date has not yet been announced to the public. On another level, the show scene looks quite interesting with a lot of shows taking place at their scheduled dates where one can still meet old and new generation breeders. One of the remarkable facts dominating the halter shows in Egypt, is that a lot of the newcomers of the show business are among younger generation breeders. In this respect, one has to mention that most of the private farms are located in greater Cairo either at Giza, close to the pyramids, or in the north east of Cairo in Oraby city and surroundings. Visiting farms in Egypt needs several days to be able to go from one side of the city to the other. Therefore, we decided to shorten the trip to our readers and conduct interviews with a group of new and old breeders to learn more about the breeding context in Egypt. Some of these breeders have been very successful in the show ring and have achieved very good results. Others don’t participate anymore and prefer more to focus on the preservation of their breeding program. More interviews are to be conducted with other Egyptian breeders in the following issues of the magazine to provide a more comprehensive overview of the breeding scenery in Egypt.

e Eng. Omar Dorra, you have been very successful in the last couple of years as a horse exhibitor in various halter shows in Egypt. Can you tell us when did you start breeding SE horses? And what are your breeding goals? First, I would like to thank you and your highly regarded publication for the opportunity to share with your readers my
breeding vision which started back in 2009, almost 15 years ago. Generally, I have a lot of passion for animals and especially horses, which I really love. Moreover, I also focus on having equal height of legs, strong movement and type. In short, I am trying to breed a horse that is close to the ideal of the breed itself.

Do you have any particular preference towards breeding certain Straight Egyptian dam lines? I am breeding several dam lines. However, I found my ideal horse coming out through a bloodline grouping of the renowned Alidara, Helala, MB Daleeya, Hodhoda and Wasfia dam lines. I was very lucky with one of my foundation mares Nadrah Al Rayyan Misr which gave me several high-quality offspring. Her filly Zolfah DORRA by Seif Sakr was crowned Gold Medal Champion in 2021 here in Egypt at Al Marasem show at Rabab stud. In addition, I have a very special colt out of this same combination named Hassib

Another root mare in my program is Asrar El Adeyyat who is a daughter of Ansata Hegazi and out of NK Ahlam. Asrar gave me very nice offspring so far and I am really very proud of her progeny at my stud. In short, these are two very important foundation mares in my program apart from other broodmares I am using now in my program. What are the stallions you are using in your breeding program? My main Stallion used at DORRA Stud is ‘Seif Sakr’ who is the son of Ansata Marengo (Ansata Marengo is fathered by Ansata Hegazy and mothered by Sara Sakr), whilst ‘Shaheen Al Habiel’, is a sire line in my program. I used him often to cover a lot of my mares and the results were really outstanding. Mainly that’s my program (breeding formula) so far, but I like from time to time, to change it up a little bit and add some ‘zest’

It is extremely challenging, but I am very happy with the results obtained so far. Moreover, I would like to emphasize that I am intending to introduce a new young stallion recently acquired from Sakr stud who is, Nawaf Sakr from the renowned family of Ansata Nefisa and by El Habiel son Shaheen Sakr. For the time being, I am incredibly satisfied with what I achieved at the show ring in Egypt. My horses (mashallah) get most of the golden medals in the Egyptian shows and I’m looking forward to competing on an international level by 2025 - God Willing. It is just a matter of choosing the right time to compete on an international level in certain major shows. What does El Zahraa bloodlines represent to you nowadays? El Zahraa bloodlines are the main source of all our Straight Egyptian Arabian horses. It is still an important component of my breeding program. As I mentioned earlier, I have some Zahraa bloodlines in my herd of mares such as the Wasfia family bloodline and the Hodhoda family bloodline both from the Obeyyan families. I really admire the outcome when out crossing these bloodlines with my main stallion Seif Sakr. Therefore, I can assert that El Zahraa bloodlines represent to me a part of my breeding

formula. In my opinion, these bloodlines are very important to refresh the bloodlines from time to time and to introduce new elements in my breeding program. Nowadays, a lot of breeders use embryo transfer in their breeding program. Please tell us your opinion on using such a breeding tool? Would that help you get a better chance of winning in the show ring? What is the outcome of embryo transfer in terms of the quality of offspring given the high cost of the procedure? Embryo transfer is considered for me a breeding method only used in a limited number of cases such as when mares are either too old or too sick, so they cannot conceive easily and the delivery may comprise risk or harm for the mare and/or the foal. I try as much as possible to avoid using this breeding method and avoid any mistreatment that may happen to my horses. Many thanks dear Omar for interviewing with us and wishing you all the best in your show career.

breeding stallions and it is a recurrent question that is often raised by many breeders at the beginning of each breeding season. Hence, can you tell us how do you usually select your stallions? In other words, what are the traits that you look for when you are selecting a new stallion? Yes, it’s always a very challenging task, but let me tell you this among other things is what makes breeding pleasurable. You do your homework by trying to find the best suitable stallion and then you wait for eleven months to see the result. I believe you must first be objective in judging your mare. You must know what she has and what she lacks, then you start to find which stallion she needs accordingly. You start with your mare and then search for the suitable stallion, not the other way round. Traits you have to take in consideration when searching for the stallion is to vigorously study the stallion's dam and her tail female, and to make sure what lines his sire did a good job with.

Do you use embryo transfer as a horse reproductive tool in your program? Would that help you achieve better results in breeding show quality horses? I don’t use embryo transfer. I feel it is partly the cause of the problem of the poor market today in Egypt. You have too much supply and very little demand. For example, if a stud with ten mares uses embryo transplants at the end of the year instead of having 10 new foals it will have twenty which is beyond the market needs and needless to mention the high financial costs and expenses. I believe that embryo transplant should be done only if you have a mare who has a medical problem that hinders her from carrying her own baby. Actually, my relationship with Arabian horses began in 2007 when I attended a show jumping championship. At that time, a distinctive horse caught
my attention—a horse with a small head, medium-sized body, wide eyes, a curved neck. Inquiring about the horse, I was told it was an Arabian horse. That sparked my interest, leading me to read and learn more about Arabian horses, particularly the Egyptian Arabian horses. I felt proud and fortunate to be in a country that is home to such magnificent horses. Our breeding goals for Arabian horses are commendable. What does El Zahraa horses mean to you? Do you use this bloodstock in your breeding program? El Zahraa horses hold great significance for us. We consider them valuable and integral to our breeding program. In fact, that made us already own two key mares, both indirectly produced from a sire and dam originating from El Zahraa. Additionally, having a pure bloodline mare directly from El Zahraa adds a valuable dimension to our breeding program. This demonstrates a strategic approach to integrating the esteemed bloodlines of El Zahraa into our own collection. The bloodstock from El Zahraa contributes to the diversity and excellence we aim for in producing high-quality Arabian horses. Their lineage and traits are carefully integrated into our breeding strategy to enhance and maintain the quality of our horse breeding program. I learned from you that you are trying to create a very appealing and comfortable
environment for horses at your farm. Can you tell us more about this music story and how it affects your horses? Certainly, creating an appealing and comfortable environment for horses is a top priority. At our farm, we focus on providing spacious and well-designed stables, ensuring proper ventilation, and maintaining clean surroundings. Additionally, we incorporate soothing music into the stable environment. Studies suggest that calming music can reduce stress and anxiety in horses, creating a more relaxed atmosphere. This approach aims to enhance the overall well-being of our horses, promoting a positive and stressfree experience for them. What are your goals in the breeding process, and to what extent do modern methods influence those goals? I believe that a successful breeder needs a clear vision at its core, and must define the goals of that vision. We see that it is preferable to acquire horses of moderate size, with distinctive movement and well-

proportioned bodies. Consequently, our plan relies on selecting mares that possess these key traits through research and observing their offspring with various stallions, paying attention to the most inherited characteristics. When we find the suitable mare, we purchase her and choose the appropriate stallion to achieve the vision’s goals. Of course, there are moments of joy and others of frustration, but this is part of the enjoyment of horse breeding. We learn more from moments of failure, guiding us towards better choices in selecting stallions. Additionally, we engage in a somewhat modern process involving embryo transfer from donor mares, with diversity in selecting stallions, helping us refine our choices more effectively and saving time. practices, emerging technologies, and the ongoing efforts to preserve the purity and qualities of the SE Arabian breed. Advancements in genetic research and reproductive technologies may play a role in shaping the future by allowing breeders to make more informed decisions and maintain the authenticity of SE bloodlines. Additionally, the dedication of breeders and organizations to uphold the standards of SE breeding will likely continue to influence the breed's future positively. For the most accurate insights, consulting experts in SE Arabian horse breeding and staying updated on industry developments is recommended. What does the shows mean to you? Competitions in the field of Arabian horse beauty hold significant importance for
breeders. Here are some key points: 1. Quality Assessment: Competitions help evaluate the quality of horses and their adherence to the specific standards of the Arabian breed. This allows breeders to assess the success of their efforts in improving and developing the breed. 2.Marketing and Reputation: Winning competitions provides breeders with an opportunity to market themselves and increase the visibility of their reputation. Winning horses gain fame, attracting the attention of potential enthusiasts and customers. 3. Community Building: Competitions encourage interaction and knowledge exchange among breeders. These events can foster a community based on collaboration and the sharing of expertise.

Seeing their horses succeed in competitions encourages more effort and innovation. 5. Preserving Heritage: Competitions contribute to preserving the distinctive genetic traits of the Arabian breed, crucial for maintaining its genetic diversity and continuity. In general, competitions are an integral part of the breeder's experience, reflecting their efforts and contributing to the development and enhancement of this unique aspect of the Arabian horse breeding world. an outcross alternative for all other Arabians including show horses. Therefore, it is our duty to try to maintain these horses and bloodlines in a good health and shape. In light of your long experience as an International ECAHO judge and an SE Breeder, do you think that Straight Egyptian horses have still a chance to compete in international major shows? Yes, for sure high quality Straight Egyptian Arabians can compete in the show ring even though their numbers in terms of quantity of horses bred are relatively less than the numbers of the non-straight Egyptian Arabians bred worldwide. I remember a coincidence for example when I was judging the world Arabian horse Championship in Paris in 2016 when Royal Colours entered the arena and the horse was really fascinating and impressive for all the judges and the crowd and he won the platinum award. Also, we have seen previously some years ago many Straight Egyptians who succeeded to win in the show ring like F Shamaal and Al Lahab. So, I believe it is still possible with selective breeding and knowledgeable breeders especially that high quality Straight Egyptian Arabian horses have always a unique type. great contribution of Lady Anne Blunt to the breed. The challenging part in preserving these horses nowadays is to try to breed them as close as possible to the original Arab horse of the past. These horses have to remain sound and in good health and condition in order to be able to maintain these genotype and characteristics. I am a strong believer that these horses and bloodlines can serve one day and help to be
A lot of breeders in our Straight Egyptian world affirm to adopt breeding programs that focuses more on preserving the Straight Egyptian horses? What’s your opinion about that? First of all, let me say that the term “Preservation” is truly employed extensively in our Straight Egyptian glossary. Effectively, the term has a multiform meaning. It can connate for example to maintain and protect a group of horses from any loss, danger or

care for horses is indeed a prerequisite for preservation of Straight Egyptian Arabians as for any other breed. Breeding in terms of horse reproduction is for sure as well one of the other essential elements for Straight Egyptian Arabian horse preservation but it does not cover the whole concept. Thus, in my opinion the mere horse reproduction process by adding to the horse population new offspring cannot be considered as horse preservation. bInDJI ( Messaoud x bukra bint salam)
illness. It can also mean to breed them away from another group of horses as well as it can mean to make some improvements in the bloodlines. Hence, the term preservation can still have a variety of significance but in all cases it implies for sure the necessity to adopt breeding techniques allowing to reassure that the intended herd of horses continue to exist in a healthy and sound manner. Good

Regrettably, a lot of breeders use this term of preservation out of context. Some others use the term solely for promotion reasons and they don’t even mind to discriminate against certain bloodlines. In order to be able to truly preserve the Straight Egyptian Arabian horses, it is very important to build our breeding decisions on evidence based facts. this breed but it cannot be sufficient. In addition, it has to be mentioned that our breeding decisions have to be supported by science to make sure that we do not replicate certain hereditary and genetic diseases in our Straight Egyptian Arabian horses such as the well-known CA disease for example. Otherwise, I believe that the term is misemployed. In your opinion, what would have to change to make breeding Arabian horses more exciting again? This is an interesting question. Well one has to admit that breeding Arabians is still exciting though one can notice that
the purpose of breeding has changed overtime. In this respect, I would like to raise the attention to the importance of breeding not solely to the purpose of winning in the show ring. For sure, this can be a goal but the Arabian horse is more an athletic horse who is supposed to be bred for other purposes. Bearing this in mind, this will affect our selection and vision how horses are being bred. Actually, one has to highlight that for each particular purpose or function of horses, there is a particular form of breeding and selection that will enhance that function. In this respect, the overall horse conformation plays an important role in the ability of

Usually, when choosing a breeding horse for instance, one should be able to distinguish between standard conformation and conformation faults in order to try to match the selected horses to fulfil a certain task or purpose. Arabians can fit in many disciplines. One can notice that, in many countries, Arabians have been used as an endurance horse that has proven itself in that field. I believe it is very important to try to revive the race industry again in Egypt as this was the original
domain of breeding sound athletic horses long time ago which contributed to the promotion of the SE horses worldwide. A lot of our famous Arabian horses used at the state stud of Egypt have existing race records. Unfortunately, this is not the case anymore in Egypt but we hope with the new establishment allocated in the new administrative Capital of Egypt to see again the revival of this important discipline for SE horses. Many thanks dear Ahmed for sharing your opinion and interviewing with us.
TAREk HAMZA is a recognised international ECAHO judge and breeder of straight Egyptians in Cairo. His love for Arabian horses is already anchored in his genetic code. For generations, members of his family have successfully bred Arabian horses. Tarek studied at
the Sorbonne University in Paris and is a successful lawyer. Following the tradition of his
family, his great passion became horse breeding and he started his own breeding program in 2005, which is based on four root mares. Tarek has a very good knowledge and expertise in
El Zahraa bloodstock. Years ago, he managed to acquire two of the finest quality remaining Hadban Enzahi fillies at an auction at El Zahraa State Stud. He wanted to preserve the old
lines and at the same time breed straight Egyptians with a lot of type and good functionality.
He is a strong believer that successful results can happen when out crossing and infusing the closed EAO bloodlines with horses from modern breeding programs. Through his small
stud, this approach made himself internationally well known. Tarek wrote this article for Desert Heritage Magazine, interviewing a group of interesting breeders. Although they are very different, they reflect the diversity of Arabian horse breeding in Egypt.
