Haz aL
Ready to Fulfil his
Destiny
There’s a new king on the block at Royal Arabians. Haz aL fills the footsteps left by his sire, Royal Asad, who has headed to a new home in Europe. Oozing quality and type, Haz aL brings together some of Royal Arabians most cherished bloodlines. Making his cover debut here in The Arabian Breeders’ Magazine, we share Haz aL to an international audience, along with the Royal ideal.
Royal Arabians truly is a family affair. Founded by Mark Davis and Cindy McGown, the farm is based in Arizona, USA, and split between three locations. The first in Scottsdale, the heart of the state’s Arabian horse community. Run by Brazilian trainer Guzzo, the Scottsdale base is home to the Royal Arabians halter programme. The second farm is in Mesa, where Amanda Fraser runs their breeding programme. Finally, they have a farm in Rio Verde, which is home to their performance programme and is overseen by Justin Cowden.
Founded over twenty years ago, Royal Arabians is synonymous with two things –breeding beautiful, typey Arabian horses, and being at the heart of the Arabian horse community, not only in the States, but overseas as well.
Having built the foundations of their programme around a group of a beautiful foundation mares, it was in 2015 that Cindy and Mark added the then colt Royal Asad to the Royal name. Foaled in Brazil in 2015, Royal Asad has not only been the farm’s flagship in the show-ring, but also as a sire of note around the world.

Cindy with Royal Asad, sire of Haz AL
Brazil has long been a source for breathtaking Arabian horses, and it is with no surprise that the next step has also come from this part of the world.
For now, it is time for Royal Asad’s son, the incredible Haz AL to shine. Greg Knowles, Royal Arabians Sales and Marketing Director, recalls: “The first time we saw Haz AL was as a baby, a foal. Guzzo, Mark, and Cindy went to the respected breeding farm in Brazil, Agropecuaria Leopoldino LTDA, as they always do each year on our annual visit.
“All of a sudden, one of the most beautiful colts we had ever seen came strutting out of the barn. Someone yelled out ‘who the heck is this?’ The response was that it was Haz AL, by Royal Asad and out of the amazing mare Elegance AL – who just happens to be a full sister of the already worldfamous mares, Andrea AL and international champion mare Bianca AL. Elegance AL is by Halyr Meia Lua (Ajman Moniscione x Halya de Jylbert by Jylbert de Wiec) out of the
beautiful Giuliana AL (ex Kyra K by Nijinsky K out of Donata K) who is by the great sire FA el Shawan (Marwan al Shaqab x Foxbriar Shakita by ZT Shakfantasy). We were so impressed with this beautiful black bay colt, and Guzzo said to ‘keep our eyes on this one, he may be a future herd sire’.
“The following spring, Mark and Guzzo were in Brazil, and they made a point to head back to see the young colt and they were still incredibly impressed. That July, while down in Brazil for the Nationals, the whole Royal team decided they simply had to go see Haz AL one more time. It was on this visit that Cindy struck an agreement with his breeder, Abel Leopoldino, to go into partnership with them and bring this amazing young colt to our Royal farm in Scottsdale. Abel stands as one of the finest Arabian horse breeders in Brazil, renowned not only for his exceptional breeding programme, but also for his deep commitment to preserving the beauty and integrity of the Arabian breed.

Haz AL
His expertise in selecting and breeding these majestic horses has earned him a well-deserved reputation across the globe.
“All of us at Royal are convinced that Haz AL is destined to be a great producer. Last breeding season, Haz was just two years old, so we didn’t want to offer him to the public – we felt he was too young. However, we bred some very special mares of our own, and our closest clients, and we feel like the result will be incredible.
“We are very proud of this gorgeous black bay colt. With his strong pedigree, we feel his future is very bright – and yes, we will stand him to the public this upcoming breeding season!”
While Cindy and Mark are delighted to have Haz AL in their breeding barn, it was with some sadness that they let Royal Asad go. “First and foremost, great breeding stallions are never for sale!” says Greg. “But, like the saying goes, ‘We will make you an offer you can’t refuse’ – and now, it’s history and Nayla Hayek of Hanaya Arabians in Switzerland proudly owns one of the top breeding stallions in the world. At Royal, we are so proud of Royal Asad and his legacy here. To the rest of the world, he will be recognised like other iconic stallions of our breed. We will miss Royal Asad tremendously, but we have retained some very special mares to use in our breeding programme, plus a couple of very special young colts who will continue his important lines.”
What makes Royal Arabians so unique is that they have a truly global picture of the Arabian horse.

Elegance AL
Royal Asad
I know that I have met Cindy and Mark countless times at shows across the globe – and this interview was even conducted in the skies as they flew back from the Global Champions Arabians Tour finale, such is their dedication to the breed and desire to have a complete picture of the Arabian horses being shown and bred.
Asking about their future plans, Greg replies: “Royal has been very astute in understanding that the Arabian horse world does not exist in one particular continent but is instead a worldwide passion. Over the past few years, Royal has created many strong relationships all over the world. We do business in South America, North America, Europe, the Middle East, and now China. Our business is very active worldwide and we hope to continue to grow and strengthen our relationships with many breeders worldwide.”
It is these personal relationships that set Royal Arabians apart. “As most people know, any company – or farm’s –philosophy always starts at the top and aligns with the complete team,” continues Greg. “At Royal Arabians, Cindy’s love and passion for the Arabian horse is undeniable.
Aria Marchestra
Everything Cindy does as the head of Royal is all about the love for and success of the Arabian horse worldwide. Every cause she supports, be it shows or prize money programmes, is all about recognition of the Arabian horse. For Cindy, breeding Arabian horses is truly about the love and recognition of the Arabian horse. It is not about self-interest for Royal Arabians, it is absolutely about the Arabian horse. And that mandate from the top to all of us at Royal is heard loud and clear. We all work hard to honour and promote the Arabian breed worldwide. For Cindy and Mark, Royal Arabians’ success is not, and has never been, about self-interest. Instead, it is always about the Arabian horse and bettering the breed. We at Royal feel our success has been great leadership on all levels, hard work, and sometimes good things just happen to good people.”
Add to that dedication to the breed an intrinsic willingness to share their passion with the world, it is no wonder that Royal Arabians continues to shine. Just watching them in Scottsdale, with their grandchildren as enthusiastic for the breed as Cindy and Mark themselves, and with a true family feel to the show, underlines that it
truly is passion and love that come first. And it was that passion that led them to Haz AL – the next superstar to call Royal Arabians home. And having spoken to Royal about their feelings for this colt, I am more than sure that Haz AL will surpass all expectations.

13th AHO Breeders’ Championship Egypt 2024
by
Arabian horses are deeply intertwined with Egypt’s history and culture. For centuries, they have been celebrated as symbols of nobility, strength and beauty. Ancient Egyptians cherished horses for their agility and loyalty, using them in battle, ceremonial events, and as prized possessions of royalty.
From the 21 to 23 of november 2024 the 13th AHO Breeders’ Championship in Egypt captivated us with its celebration of arabian horses, blending beauty, competition and culture. This event set in Cairo, a
city steeped in history and hosted at the premises of prestigious Rabab Stud, once again brought together arabian horse breeders, trainers, and enthusiasts in an atmosphere of hospitality and shared passion.
Rabab Stud, a jewel in Egypt’s equestrian landscape, provided an ideal setting for this event. Its pristine facilities and picturesque surroundings offered a professional yet inviting atmosphere. Guests were treated to not only breathtaking horses but also Egypt’s renowned hospitality.
Tomasz Hebda z photos by Ewa Imielska-Hebda
The championship was as much about fostering community as it was about competition. Visitors remarked on the event’s friendly and welcoming atmosphere with the audience cheering enthusiastically for every competitor. Spectators from different cultures came together, celebrating a shared admiration for the arabian horse. The show was filled with energy as fans supported their favorites while embracing the spirit of unity that defines equestrian events.
The competition featured diverse classes from foals to senior horses and a panel of international judges: Ms. Gabriela Thiry (Poland), Mr. Abdelaziz Al Marzooqi (United Arab Emirates), Mr. Fausto Scanzi (Italy), Mr. Hassan Al Mannai (Qatar), Mr. Jassim Al Mesbah (Kuwait), Dr. Mahmood Faraj (Bahrain), Dr. Mahmoud Mohsen (Egypt), Mr. Mohamed Badrawy (Egypt) and
Mr. Taha Khoudri (Morocco) ensured high standards of evaluation.
Set against Cairo’s historic charm, the championship became a celebration beyond competition. It offered breeders, trainers, and enthusiasts an opportunity to connect, share expertise and celebrate their love and passion for arabian horses, which often is a passion passed through generations. The event’s lively atmosphere and warm reception made it a standout experience, reinforcing Egypt’s role as a leader in equine culture.
The 13th AHO Breeders’ Championship was a resounding success, blending competitive excellence with community spirit and it was a pleasure and honour to be a part of it. q

The 2024 Global Champions Arabians Tour, the most prestigious Arabian horse show series, concluded its season in Riyadh, marking a historic finale at KAFD X from November 13-16. This event capped a seven-stage series that showcased the grace, beauty, and heritage of the Arabian horse, drawing over 230 horses from the GCC and Europe. The total prize pool of the Riyadh stage reached €5,115,000, making it the most lucrative in the industry’s history. And what a journey it has been. The incredible quality of horses on display brought together people from around the world, from diverse cultures, to celebrate the most prestigious breed of all, the Arabian Horse. The grand final in Riyadh was the perfect stage.
CEO of the Global Champions Arabians Tour, Bader Al Darwish, noted that the decision to choose Riyadh as the final stop of the GCAT series was no coincidence: “Saudi Arabia is a homeland for Arabian horses and a crossroads between Arab cultures. We were thrilled and pleased that during the past four days of Arabian horse competitions, we managed to delightfully host owners, breeders, judges, and guests from around the world,” he stated on the GCAT website.
The atmosphere at the event was remarkable, filled with excitement and joy. Attendees enjoyed excellent food, entertainment, and, of course, the best horses in the world.
The finale featured an impressive panel of 20 international judges from diverse backgrounds, enhancing the event’s high standards and ensuring fairness. The judges included Luiz Rocco from Brazil; Josy Everars and Julie Maden from Belgium; Peter Birch from Denmark; Ali Shaarawi and Tarek Hamza from Egypt; Marc Veray from France; Manfred Hein and Michaela Weidner from Germany; Abdelouahed Maagoul and Mohammed Oussidhoum from Morocco; Karin Zeevenhoven and Gideon Reisel from the Netherlands; Sufian Taha Al Husseini from Palestine; Jerzy Bialobok and Lucas Gozdzialski from Poland; Caroline Reid from the United Kingdom; Leslie Connor and Greg Knowles from the United States; and Urs Aeschbacher from Switzerland. Their collective expertise ensured that each horse was evaluated with precision and respect for the Arabian horse’s heritage. The judges upheld the reputation of this premier global event, further enhancing its credibility and prestige.
Yearling Fillies
Day one began with the qualifying classes for the show’s youngest participants. The competition featured two full classes of yearling fillies, each with 19 participants. Only the top three from each class would advance to the final yearling fillies championships. It was a close finish, but with her dazzling beauty and strong movement, Sultana al Thamer (Dominic M x Weaam al Jassim),
Yearling Colts
The show continued with two strong classes of yearling colts. The top-scoring horses displayed exceptional quality. The clear winner of the class, with an impressive score of 92.64 points, was the undefeated Afreen Al Shaqab (D Meyzan x Siwar Al Shaqab), bred and owned by Al Shaqab Stud. This colt embodies Arabian beauty with his type, head and neck, solid body, and exceptional movement. In the final championships, he was awarded the Gold medal, capping off a phenomenal season for this young superstar. Second in the class, scoring 91.14 points, was Mubeen Athbah (Fahd Al Tinhat x Leen Athbah), bred by Athbah Stud and owned by HRHP Abdulaziz Bin Ahmad Bin Abdulaziz Al Saud. Despite an excellent performance, Mubeen could not secure a medal in the final championships. The third-placed colt, Meshal The Line (Ghaith Al Zobair x D Gezaila), bred and owned by Abdullah Almeshal, scored a total of 91.07 points but also did not advance to medal placement.
So where did the other medals go? They were claimed by the colts in the next class. All horses in the top five of this class scored over 91 points, but it was the outstanding D Borkan (FA El Rasheem x D Ajayeb), bred and owned by Dubai Arabian Horse Stud, who dominated with a remarkable score of 93.29 points. With perfect 20s in type, head, and neck, alongside strong marks for body and movement, this colt was unbeatable in the class. However, in the final championships, he competed against Afreen and had to settle for the Silver medal. Second in this highly competitive class was the outstanding mover, Shahab Al Shaqab (EKS Farajj x Samar Al Shahab), bred by Al Shahab Stud and owned by Fadhel Abbas Aljamri, with 91.86 points. In the final championships, Shahab yielded the medal to the thirdplaced horse in the class, Sinan Al Bahya (AJ Redan x AJ Saray), bred by Ajman Stud and owned by Abdullah
Alotaibi. With 91.21 points, Sinan secured his place in the final and claimed the Bronze medal.
Junior Fillies
After this exciting class of yearling colts, it was time for more excitement as two strong classes of two-year-old fillies were up next! The top three scoring horses stood out in this class. However, it was the magnificent Shahbrys HVP (Royal Asad x Rebecca HVP) who took the lead with 92.86 points. This Brazilian-bred filly, bred by Vila Dos Pinheiros, had already enjoyed a fantastic season for her owner, Turki Alothman. In this final edition of the GCAT, Shahbrys demonstrated that she belongs among the best fillies in the world. Unfortunately, she had no chance in the final championships, underlining the exceptional quality of the competition. The same held true for the second-placed filly, Almaha RC (Fadi Al Shaqab x Mahera RC), bred and owned by the Royal Cavalry of Oman, who scored a total of 91.43 points, and for the third-placed filly, Bianca (EKS Farajj x Ramla Al Zobair), bred by Omar Khalid Alhowaidi and owned by Abdullah Alotaibi, scoring 91.29 points. The second class of two-year-old fillies was also of exceptional quality. With an astonishing score of 93.50 points, the reigning world champion filly Shahalel Al Shaqab (Namous Al Shahania x Siwar Al Shaqab), bred and owned by Al Shaqab Stud, took the lead with ease. This filly is the epitome of perfection, earning full 20s for type and for head and neck, along with strong scores for body and movement. Later, in the final championships, Shahalel was rewarded for her efforts by claiming the Gold medal, marking a perfect end to a fabulous season. Second in this strong class, with 91.50 points, was Sabah ERD (Dinar Al Erdh x Nora El Erdh), bred by Abdullah Aljebreen and owned by Mohammed Aljebreen. Placing third, with 91.29 points, was the stunning Lady R RAR (AJ Radman
x Falcons Love Note BHF), bred by Regan Rohl and owned by Abdulrahman AlQahtani.
The three-year-old fillies were shown the following day in another large, high-quality class. The winner of the class, with an impressive total score of 92.93 points, was D Najlah (D Seraj x Elle Flamenca), bred and owned by Dubai Arabian Horse Stud. This filly received perfect 20s for type, head, and neck, and later secured the Silver medal in the final junior filly championships. Placing second, with 92.21 points was D Sanayen (Wortex Kalliste x D Seeneyyah), bred by Dubai Arabian Horse Stud and owned by Akmal Stud. This filly showcased exceptional movement, earning multiple 20s in this category, and went on to claim the Bronze medal in the championships. Third in this class, with 91.64 points, was the beautiful TM Bella (TM Itaipu x TM Fahdeelah), bred by Jose Orlando & Teixeira Junior from Brazil and owned by Al Jumail Stud. Although she received some votes for Bronze in the final championships, it was not enough to secure a medal this time.
Junior Colts
The show continued with two large classes of junior colts, beginning with the two-year-olds. This was an exceptionally thrilling class, with the top four colts achieving closely matched scores. Standing out with outstanding movement and refined type, the charismatic D Shahkar (D Shahkat x D Shamkhah), bred and owned by Dubai Arabian Horse Stud, led the way with an impressive score of 92.43 points. This colt had already enjoyed a successful season at GCAT but had to settle for Silver in the final championship. Polish Arabian Horse Sport League
by Urszula
Primastella Stable located near the capital city of Poland - Warsaw, has come up with a bold and much needed initiative to promote the Arabian horse in sport for the fourth time. It is a response to the demand of the breeding community to manage a large number of horses and also to the expectations of its owners who want to start their adventure with competition on horses of this breed and from year to year appear at the competitions organised by the owner of the Primastella StableBogdan Maślanka, in increasing numbers. Organised for the last three years, the series of competitions is held from April to September in various disciplines and is called the Polish Arabian Horse Sport League. Every year it gathers about 21-25 pairs, and riders on Purebred horses have competed in various competitions a total of more than 40 times, which, on the scale of Poland, where riding Arabian horses is not popular, is quite an achievement. The Arabian Horse Sport League is an excellent chance for those who, for various reasons, do not want to compete in overall horse competitions, as well as for those who are just starting out in competitions in general. It was not uncommon for horses known for winning medals at shows to make their debuts under saddle in the Polish Arabian Sport League.
In the 2024 season, in addition to the Sport League, Primastella Stables organised the Amateur Handlers’ Championship for the first time, which was a consequence of organising training courses for amateur Arabian horse handlers for a long time.
As there is a growing interest in both the participation in Arabian horse sport events and training in various fields by people who so far have been dealing with the breed
completely amateurishly, owners of individual horses or small stables Primastella Stables intends to organise competitions and training on a larger, also international scale, from the next season on. This is an important initiative because there are few such activities in Europe in general. And the production of horses is still high and not every horse has the chance to become a champion in shows, flat races or endrurance. On the other hand it is important for breeding to promote the use of the Arabian horse as an intelligent companion animal, family friend.
In order to meet the demand of breeders and owners of Arabian horses, Primastella Stables intends to include in its calendar also breeding oriented classes - like covering and insemination, preparing mares for breeding season or selecting stallions. Yet another initiative that will start in the 2025 season thanks to the organisers from Primastella Stables will be the organisation of the Children’s Riding League - promoting horse sports among the youngest, but also among the older ones who want to try their hand at professional competitions, not only on Arabian horses.
The passion and commitment of the organiser, Bogdan Maślanka, has found great recognition not only among the participants but also among large breeders and companies that see the importance of organising such events and are more and more willing to join as sponsors of the events at Primastella Stables, although the organiser himself is still responsible for the biggest costs and commitment. Thanks to sponsors and organisers, everyone leaves the competition with a trophy or a gift, which, apart from the satisfaction, reward the effort of preparation and the courage shown. As its initiator and

organiser, Bogdan Maślanka, emphasises, it is courage that the League is all about. The cyclic competitions are meant to encourage and mobilize all lovers and owners of Arabian horses, who would like to publicly present the effects of their work and friendship with these unusually intelligent and sensitive horses.
However, not everyone has the courage to compete in national championships or in competitions for horses of other breeds - and this is why an alternative has been created, which from an intimate competition is slowly becoming an initiative attracting the interest of the community from all over Poland, and perhaps in the long term - also from beyond.
At this point, on behalf of the organiser, we would like to thank all previous sponsors, donors and volunteers, without whose contribution it would not have been possible to organise the previous editions and plan the next ones - of even greater scope. We warmly invite you to participate and support this initiative! q
