BLOODLINE

by Samantha Mattocks ❚ photos by Alessio Azzali, Gregor Aymar, Lore Beckers, Ricard Cunil, Glenn Jacobs, Gideon Resiel, Renato Sorvilo

Elegant, dynamic, ethereal, and charismatic. These are just some words that can be used to describe Shiraz de Lafon. This regal stallion is considered one of the most astute breeding choices for global breeders. Owned by Jadem Arabians in Belgium, he has progeny the world over and he is making a serious mark as a sire of note. A champion himself, Shiraz de Lafon’s progeny are now following in his winning ways, and he remains one to watch. Jadem Arabians is world-renowned as being one of the leading breeding farms over the past forty plus years. Owned by Guy and Christine Jamar, the farm – located near Balen, just outside of Antwerp, is founded on pure Polish bloodlines and is the largest farm outside of Poland to breed this line. As well as being a breeder, Christine is also an international judge and she has travelled the world, assessing some of the greatest Arabian horses of past generations. With most of her mare lines being founded on the Polish lines, in particular daughters of Ekstern (Monogramm x Ernestyna), Christine has always looked for new stallions to bring to Jadem to complement her mares.

As well as her own outcross stallion, Emerald J (QR Marc x Emandoria) who is, of course, more than 50% Polish breeding, Christine knew that she needed that special stallion, that one total outcross to enhance the Jadem programme further. Shiraz de Lafon would become this horse. Foaled in 2013, he was just a few months old when Christine first saw him. “From that very first moment, he showed confidence and pizzazz,” recalls Christine. “He was running away from his dam, and he had just the right attitude that I look for in my horses. I knew then that I had found not only a future stallion to breed with, but also a horse that I wanted to buy and bring to Jadem.” Shiraz de Lafon was the first colt purchased for Jadem in many years, and this truly underlines his quality and the potential that Christine saw in him. Bred by Mas de Lafon in France, Shiraz de Lafon is sired by the universally renowned stallion Shanghai EA, a multiple champion who has earned titles at the All Nations’ Cup, the European Championships, the Paris World Championships, the Dubai International

BLOODLINE

Arabian Horse Championships, and in Menton among many others. Shanghai EA is sired by the ‘champion maker’ WH Justice (Magnum Psyche x Vona Sher-Renea) who, of course, comes from one of the most coveted sire lines of modern breeding, going back to the great 1977 stallion Padron (Patron x Odessa) whose son Padrons Psyche (ex Kilika)

was a sire of note and who remains current today. Shanghai EA’s is out of the Khidar daughter (Ansata Sinan x Elizja) Salymah EA (Libanon Azadika). Thus, Shanghai EA’s dam brings in Egyptian bloodlines as well as Spanish through El Shaklan (Shaker El Masri x Estopa) to complement the predominant Russian lines found in the damline.

www.tuttoarabi.com - TUTTO ARABI | 55

The influence of Khidar – who is a Reserve World Champion as well as champion at the All Nations’ Cup and European Championships among his many titles – on Shiraz de Lafon is reinforced through his dam, Diacira de Lafon, who is a daughter of Khidar. Her dam in turn brings in the Russian lines that Christine loves so much as she is out of Devitsa (Ponomarev x Evitah), who is double Aswan (Nazeer x Yoseria), a stallion who was Egypt’s gift to Russia, reinforcing Shiraz de Lafon’s Egyptian heritage even further.

56 | TUTTO ARABI - www.tuttoarabi.com

With such wonderful bloodlines, there is little wonder that Christine chose Shiraz de Lafon to be the perfect outcross for her deeply Polish broodmares. Before breeding, however, came showing, and as a young colt, Shiraz de Lafon was awarded a Top Five Championship title at the European Championships as well as Most Beautiful Head. He was also named as a Gold Champion at the 2014 West Coast Cup Gold Champion Colt and add the Bronze Champion Colt title to his name at the Ströhen Show. As a two-year-old, Shiraz de Lafon won Gold

at the Emerald Trophy in Brecht and as a three-year old, he took the Silver Junior Male Championship at Al Khalediah European Arabian Horse Festival, Poland. As a stallion, Shiraz de Lafon has continued to shine and took the Gold Senior Male Championship at the Arabian Horse Weekend in 2019. Christine, however, purchased Shiraz de Lafon to be a breeding sire and it is here that he has made his mark. In 2016 his first foals were born, including the exotic filly Rania JK, out of the Borsolino K (Encore Ali x Keepsake V) daughter, Rayyana K (ex MFA Exoticaa), bred by Christine with Murilo Kammer of Haras Aratinga in Brazil. Also among Shiraz de Lafon’s early foals was Galliano J (ex Glamour Girl J), Bronze Champion Foal at the Emerald Trophy and Gold Junior Male Champion at the European C Show at Ströhen. Galliano J was also Gold Champion and Best in Show at the both the 2018 and 2019 AJF Challenge Show. Also from Christine’s breeding is the 2018 grey beauty Montana J (ex Melody J), who won her class at the AHO European Championship as a yearling and took the Gold Yearling Filly title. That same year, Messouda J (ex Miami J), won her yearling filly class at the 2019 Arabian Horse Weekend and took the Bronze Yearling Filly title. Also foaled in 2018 was Pegaze J (ex Paris J), Champion Colt in the Coupe de France 2019 and now owned by José Musetti. Outside of Christine’s own programme, one of Shiraz de Lafon’s most successful progeny has been AV Purple Rain (ex AV Dancing Rain), a 2017 filly bred in the UK by AV Arabians and sold to Bin Hamila Arabian Horse Stud in the United Arab Emirates. As a yearling, AV Purple Rain took Bronze at the European Championships and this year, as a three-year old, she won her class and took the Gold Junior Female Championship at the Ajman Arabian Horse Show. Then there is Ganador AH, out of Golden Sunset J

(QR Marc x Gomera J), foaled in 2017 and named Silver Champion Colt in Israel as a two-year old. “Shiraz de Lafon has been recognised by international breeders around the world,” says Christine. “He has a very nice colt in Brazil – Talal Serondella, out of Ella Dorada (Enzo x El Dorada) – who was bred and owned by Lenita Perroy and is now owned by Haras Aratinga and Haras Serondella. Lenita bought a few breedings for Shiraz, and it was a big privilege for our stallion to be used in the Haras Mei Luia breeding programme. Murilo has also used him a lot and has an extremely beautiful filly, Aaliyah, out of Annika (Magnum Chall HVP x Ardant Carol). Jaime Pinheiro of Haras Villa dos Pinheiros, also in Brazil, has a lovely filly. “This year, the Michałów State Stud is using Shiraz de Lafon. Al Thumama Stud have already successfully used Shiraz and are using him again. And he has had his first foals born in New Zealand at Gerzanne Stud and also with Sergio Gobbi. He has also had his first foal born in the United States, at Quintessa Arabians, and a range of leading breeders across Europe have had some amazing foals by Shiraz de Lafon. It is wonderful to see him being used the world over on some amazing mares.” At just seven years of age, Shiraz de Lafon has more than rewarded Christine’s belief in him. “From the arrival of his very first foals, I knew that my confidence in the then foal Shiraz de Lafon was well placed,” says Christine. “His pedigree is superb, and he has that certain something that stands him apart from the crowd.” Shiraz de Lafon – with his exotic face, smooth body and elegant paces – truly is a sire of note. He remains a stallion for all breeders, and he is a stallion for the future. With foals found as far away as New Zealand, this classy stallion is more than rewarding breeders’ faith in him. Shiraz de Lafon – the one who continues to shine. ❑

by THERESA CARDAMONE

When a few forward-thinking American breeders forged relationships with the Polish State Stud back in the mid-20th century, there was no guarantee their gamble would pay off. Not only were the two countries unaligned politically, making it difficult for any deals to occur, but shipping horses around the world was also sketchy at best in those days. But pay off it did, and Arabian horse breeding was changed forever.

For example, it took tremendous persistence, finesse, and trust for Dr. Eugene LaCroix and his family to purchase eventual U.S. National Champions *Bask and Prowizja (among others) for their Lasma Arabians. (*Bask’s record as a show horse and influence as a sire is legendary; Prowizja was U.S. National Champion Park and dam to four national champions.) Lasma, and other pioneer

breeders, changed the landscape of the Arabian industry forever and laid the groundwork for future collaborations.

In recent years, the Ames family of Cedar Ridge Farm, Minnesota, teamed with David Boggs and Midwest Training Centre to create a modern partnership with Poland. Boggs had already formed a connection by negotiating deals that sent U.S.-bred multi-national champion Vitorio TO abroad to stand at the State Studs on a lease. At the same time, Polish, European, and World Champion Junior Mare, Wieza Mocy, came to America. Led by David Boggs, Wieza Mocy dazzled by earning the American “Triple Crown” of halter competition; championships at the Arabian Breeders World Cup (ABWC), Scottsdale, and the United States Nationals for lessee Oak Ridge Arabians.

Boggs also managed the lease of Polish National Champion Junior Stallion Pogrom from Janów Podlaski State Stud. The pair lit the American show world on fire, winning a Triple Crown that included two United States National Champion titles. When an embryo of Pogrom and Wieza Mocy became available, Cedar Ridge Farm was quick to make the purchase. The resulting filly, Wieza Bella, is everything they had hoped for and has earned two U.S. National top ten titles to date.

Dick, Lollie, and Lara Ames had developed a deep appreciation of Polish breeding through *Bask and his impact, especially on the English performance genre. Bella’s success sparked their desire to add more contemporary Polish bloodlines to the Cedar

Ridge breeding program. “It started when we took a trip to Poland with Gene LaCroix, Scott Benjamin and Anette Madsen,” Lara relates. “We toured all the stud farms. When we got to Bialka, it was a rainy day. We saw, from a distance, a stunningly beautiful grey mare in the mist. That was Perfirka. We fell in love with her and couldn’t stop talking about her. We later found out that she was going to be in the auction, so of course, that was super-exciting for us. I went back to Poland with David and Gerald Kurtz, and we purchased her!”

Perfirka, foaled in 2003, is an elegant grey daughter of Platinum World Champion Gazal Al Shaqab and comes from the same famous Polish dam line as both the earlier mentioned Pogrom and Prowizja. It is one of the oldest Polish foundation lines, tracing back to 1810 when Szamrajowka was foaled at Count W. Branicki’s Biala Cerkiew from desert bred stock.

This powerful “P” dam line emanates from Szamrajowka’s 8-times-great-granddaughter, Wlodarka, and her two Priboj daughters. The first one, Prowierka (1948), is the granddam of Prowizja, the source of park horse performance power, while the full-sister Piewica (1953) founded the world-famous “P” family at Janów through her Negatiw daughter, Pierzga. In turn, Pierzga produced several significant daughters, including the exquisite Pilarka, the greatgranddam to the beloved World Champion, Pianissima. Another daughter, Pipi, is granddam of World Champion, Pinga. Piewica’s 1983 Bandos daughter, Polish National Champion, Pentoda, is the dam of U.S. National Champion Mare, Penicylina. Pentoda is also the dam of Pogrom’s great-granddam Pestka, and Pentoza, the granddam of Perfirka.

Perfirka was imported to America and made her first show appearance at the 2015 Arabian National Breeder Finals (ANBF), where she won the Senior Champion Mare title. After winning the mature mare class at Scottsdale the following February, Perfirka went home to Cedar Ridge Farm, where she foaled a son by Ekstern, Pharaoh CRF. When October rolled around, Perfirka was in fine form and returned to competition to capture the 2016 United States National

Champion Mare AAOTH title with Lara Ames on the lead. It was a very satisfying experience, and a validation for the Polish breeders, who were thrilled with Perfirka’s success.

As she aged, the Ames family began to dream of acquiring Perfirka’s World Silver Champion daughter Perfinka. The latter is by the heavily decorated Polish National Champion Stallion, Esparto, to add to her dam’s legacy in their program. Lollie Ames recalls, “Dick wanted a daughter of Perfirka and told David to get going on it and find him one!” David Boggs was happy to help. “I knew the Ames loved so dearly, Perfirka, and I had heard about Perfinka. I talked to Dick about her, and he grabbed hold of it right away. Dick thought it would be exciting and thrilling. He turned me loose to see what kind of business arrangement we could make with Poland, so I did just that. There was a lot of negotiating back and forth; it was not an easy undertaking to lease such a mare.”

When the agreement was first signed, Perfinka was heavily in foal, and she stayed in Poland until they weaned the resulting filly. Boggs continues, “Dick was excited. He would ask about that mare every day, ‘When is she coming? When’s she coming?’” As Lollie Ames picks up the story, it turns bittersweet, “Dick said to David, when is that mare coming? I’d like to see her before I die. Now, we all make statements like that sometimes, but he did indeed pass away a few days before she arrived, so he never got to see her.”

*Perfinka, at her own U.S. debut, was named 2019 Arabian Breeders World Cup Gold Supreme Champion Senior Mare.

“The lease of Perfinka was the last horse transaction my dad did before he passed away,” Lara adds. “The whole deal was dedicated to my dad. There were some special moments as she won the only three shows that she competed in [ABWC, ANBF, U.S. Nationals]. We’re parting ways with her in August because the lease is over. She is selling in the Polish auction, and we are sad about that, but we look forward to welcoming her 2020 grey filly by the immortal Padron via the miracle of embryo transfer. Perfinka came into our lives at a special time and gave us such happiness

when we had bad days. And I feel like America fell in love with her, just like we did.”

Boggs couldn’t wait to present Perfinka to her public. “She was relatively unknown by the American people other than those who travel abroad, which aren’t many these days,” he says. “Her first exposure to the eyes of judges, breeders, and the American public was the Las Vegas show. She blew people right off their chairs. Wow! She was amazing with her power and with her character.” The judges agreed, and Perfinka was named the ABWC Gold Supreme Champion Senior Mare.

“Perfinka is probably the most beautiful horse I have ever laid eyes on,” Lollie avers. “Everything has faults: horses have faults, dogs have faults, human beings

have faults. But I don’t know if you can find anything to fault on this mare. And I thought her mother was a pretty mare! Perfinka’s got that neck, a beautiful head, big eyes, and she’ll trot all day long. You just kind of melt when you look at her. And she’s much friendlier than her mother. She loves people, especially kids. She loves to eat carrots out of their hands. And she loves to show. You stand her up, and you don’t even have to do anything. She seems to say, ‘Oh! I’ve got to show now! Everybody, look at me!’ She has quite a following; it’s unreal.”

Both Lollie and Boggs point out an unusual characteristic of Perfinka’s, which has helped to endear her to the larger community and her growing fan base. “When she gets to the winner’s circle, she looks up as if she’s looking to the heavens and starts whinnying!” laughs Boggs. “And not just once—two, or three, or four times! As if she’s announcing or calling out, or she’s talking to Dick up there! You can see in some of the win photos that her eyes are looking straight up.”

At Perfinka’s next stop, the Arabian National Breeder Finals, she claimed the champion mare title before heading to Tulsa and her shot at U.S. National Champion Mare honors. Like an unstoppable force, Boggs and Perfinka swept to the championship by unanimous decision of the judges.

“Perfinka is a rare, honest horse who surely is as beautiful out in the pasture, let-down and dirty, as she is clipped up, in show condition, and presenting in the show ring,” states Joe Polo. “As soon as she entered the ring, it was clear that she was a special horse and would likely end up near the top of my card. When she walked into the middle of the arena and we

Triple Crown winner, *Perfinka - 2019 Arabian Breeders World Cup, U.S. Nationals and 2020 Scottsdale Champion Senior Mare.

had the opportunity to judge her from head to toe, I was taken and felt honored to judge her. Her honest conformation, overall classic Arabian type, and intangible, sexy, feminine presence was undeniable.”

It is important to note that Perfinka was not the only offspring of Perfirka to win a United States national championship in 2019. Pharaoh CRF garnered the U.S. National Champion Stallion AAOTH honors, took home a Top Ten Junior Stallion award as well, and earned Perfirka additional nods as a sensational producer.

With the wins achieved in Las Vegas and Tulsa, there was just one more victory needed to complete Perfinka’s Halter Triple Crown—Scottsdale Champion Mare. Judge Christine Ryan is pleased to articulate why she gave Perfinka the 2020 win: “What truly stands out when Perfinka enters the ring is her presence. The championship lineup was stunning—one beautiful, correct mare after another. That presence is what pushed Perfinka to the top of my card. She simply owned the ring.”

Fellow judge Donnie Bullock agrees. “Perfinka has so many excellent qualities. She possesses such perfect symmetry and correctness with pure natural beauty and superior Arabian type in all categories. Just absolute beauty. It was an honor and privilege to judge such superior mares in the same ring at the same time, and Perfinka being named unanimous Scottsdale Champion Mare made it even more special.”

The Cedar Ridge/Midwest/Poland relationship has been a win-win-win situation thus far, where all have flourished. Friendships have been forged, championships have been earned, values have been enhanced, and great joy has been spread. With such documented success, there is every expectation that all three entities will look forward to additional collaborations as they perfect their partnership in the future.■

he history of pure bred Arabian horses at Klikowa starts long before Marek Rzepka, the owner of Klikowa Arabians, bought his first mares and its related to the interesting history of the place where the horses of Klikowa Arabians found their home. The city of Tarnów, where Klikowa is a part of, as well as the land where the new stable of Marek is located belonged to Count Sanguszko family who made the mile stone for world’s breeding of Arabian horses by one of the first breeders in Europe and last importers of original Arabian horses from the desert. Until today we can find the horses imported by Count Sanguszko to Tarnów in the pedigrees

of most famous Arabian horses nowadays. The strains of Kuhailan Afas (great grandsire of Bask or Aladdin), Kuhailan Haifi (the foundation stallion for the Monogramm or El Paso lines) or Kuhailan Zaid (chief Arabian sire for Babolna stud in Hungary) have began thanks to Count Roman Sanguszko and they come from the land where now the Arabian horses of Klikowa Arabians graze the pastures. Even the family of Marek Rzepka have even the personal connections with the Sanguszko properties in Tarnów so we asked him to tell us a bit ofthat story.

Interviewed by Sonja Smaldone

L

ocated in Ströhen, Germany, Gestüt Ismer is one of the most famous and successful private breeding programs in Europe dedicated to international quality production. In the stable of Ismer Stud you can find World, European, and National Show Champions and first class riding horses. Countless victories throughout Europe on international shows, tournaments and races have proved that the breeding goal is maintained to the maximum extent. I had the honour to interview Dr. Nils right after the 2020 edition of PSAIAHF in Saudi Arabia last January, he was very pleased to walk me through the main stages of his lifetime activity as a breeder and spokesman of the Arabian horse.

Hello Dr. I s m e r . Thank you very much for accepting our interview. Let’s start from the very beginning. Please, i nt r o d u c e yourself to our readers. Give us some background to you, your family and education. My name is Dr. Nils Ismer and I was born at Ismer Stud and Tierpark Ströhen. My family has been breeding Arabian horses since 1959, and, today, we have about 200 Arabians at the stud. After finishing my veterinary studies, I was working four years at the Veterinary Clinic in Lüsche to improve my veterinary skills, especially in reproduction. In 2007, I took over the farm of my father and since then I have been running 130 | TUTTO ARABI - www.tuttoarabi.com

it with my wife and my two children. What made you prefer the Arabian breed to all the other breeds? And how long have you been breeding it? I had no chance to escape! Born in one of the biggest Arabian stud farms in Europe leaves certainly a life-long impression. The captivating beauty, the versatility and the very unique character of the Arabian horse caught me already at a very young age. I first showed one of my father’s mares in Aachen when I was only 10 years old. That left a deep mark on me. The overwhelming feeling, when you walk through the meadows with new born foals is irreplaceable. What does the word ‘breeding’ mean to you? What specific qualities or skills do you need to become a good breeder? Breeding m e a n s creation. You need to have a vision of “your” horse and should not just follow icons. Combined with a strong passion and rare talent of being critical to your own program, you can achieve a lot. No horse is perfect; no combination is predictable! That keeps the game fascinating. On the other hand, it helps a lot if you do have a clear picture of the ancestors of your breeding horses. When was Gestüt Ismer created? What’s your philosophy Dr. Ismer? Ismer Stud was founded in 1959 by our late grandfa-

PEOPLE

PEOPLE ther Rolf Ismer, who was born in Silesia, Poland. He married our Grandmother Annemarie, who was in charge of the beautiful farm, which was run by her family since more than 700 years. The idea of my grandfather and my father was to breed a functional Arabian horse with high type and correct structure. The unique beauty should never conceal the importance of performance, health and strengths. By combining bloodlines from the Polish programs with bloodlines from Weil and Egyptian pedigrees, we have tried to improve our own stock year by year, following a consequent selection. Rideability and performance are the basics for a balanced and well- structured horse, which must be the basement for perfect beauty.

132 | TUTTO ARABI - www.tuttoarabi.com

PEOPLE Which bloodlines are mostly bred at your Stud-farm? Our first mares came from Griesbach stud and belong to some of the most famous bloodlines of the Weil Marbach breeding. Later, my father imported many horses from Janow Podlaski and Michalow and added Egyptian stallions to the program. Based on these, we try to add useful genetic material to our breeding every year. Lately, we have used Pallaton K, Ascot DD and Poseidon OS, which all three left a remarkable progeny. Besides that, we keep running a small straight Egyptian program based on the major impression of the Hadban Enzahi son Madkour I and a strong influence of Hanan and Sabah, both mares from Dr. Hans Nagel.

www.tuttoarabi.com - TUTTO ARABI | 133

Who is/are the most important breeding stallion(s) at Gestüt Ismer at the moment? Why? Ascot DD, because he is combining a unique pedigree with fantastic offspring, especially concerning beauty and movements. But also Pallaton K gives Arabian Horse Show at Ismer Stud us great opportunities, as he is a fantastic horse and producer and has neither WH Justice nor Gazal Al Shaqab blood, which I am afraid you cannot find very often anymore these days! Which of your mares are you mainly using to improve or evolve your breeding program? Currently we are using mares by WH Justice son Altis, by Gazal Al Shaqab son Gazwan Al Nasser, by Excalibur son El Mariachi and by QR Marc son IS Exxpu. The most outstanding mares at the moment are IS Et Tu by IS Exxpu, IS Wimea and IS Ella Nora by El Mariachi. How do you tackle the concepts of ‘beauty’ and ‘functional correctness’ in our modern day Arabians? It is actually a very important question, as our breed is losing the functionality part of it by misusing our show system. Many winning horses at big shows are not very functional anymore and have lost the ability to move in a powerful and balanced way. By using stallions and also selecting mares with strong movement skills, we are trying to keep these major important aspects in our breeding program. Good examples are some of the stallions we are currently using such as: Altis, El Mariachi, Pallaton K and Ascot DD!

Where did your passion for morphology competitions arise from? Please, outline some of the most important victories in the show environment so far. Well, showing a class-winning mare with ten years of age at the European Championships set a dangerous seed! This was the beautiful Mashoura by Madkour I - Shiwa in 1986. In 1989 her full-sister Madoura won Reserve European Champion in Fontainebleau! Lately, it was the Reserve European Champion Title of IS Exxpu, which was bred in the seventh generation in Ströhen! What is it you’d like to still experiment at this stage of your breeding career in the Arabian horse industry? I am still waiting - and hoping - for my first own bred World Champion! But the big challenge for the future will be to find an exceptional stallion with outcrossed bloodlines like HL El Ganador for example. I hope that our breeding society will be brave enough to walk on alternative ways. Otherwise, we are locking ourselves in the trap of inbreeding. What are the objectives you would like your breeding program to reach in the future? Right now we already breed the horses I wish for. IS Et Tu is such an example. She is feminine and elegant, correct but breathtaking! I only hope that we can do this more often and still keep a good variety of dam-lines. When and why was Tierpark Ströhen created? What’s the main thought behind it? It was founded also in 1959 just like the Stud-farm. In the beginning it was a combination of business concept and “living your dream”. My grandfather was an animal crazy person and just got tired of so many people visiting him and watching all his lovely animals, but not paying for it. Over the years, Tierpark has become more and more professional and it is following the main responsibilities of every professional Zoo, which is: education, species protection and recreation for the people. We always try to bring our visitors very close to the animals, especially the children, and try to teach them also the importance of species protection and biological facts. Right this year, we are starting a program to support the endangered species in our Zoo, but also in the region. Besides that, we are running programs where you can have unique experiences with wild animals like the elephants for instance, and at the same time you are part of their entertainment!

Dr. Ismer, will you please leave a final message to the readers of AHM? Let us start a discussion about our breeding! Is it wise to produce 10 Embryos of the same mare in one year? Is it clever to provide semen of stallions worldwide and keep many potential stallions out of the business? Are we helping the breed by using only two sire-lines in the show-breeding? We should be open for new thoughts, even though they may reduce our options in one way, they may open new doors in the other way. Thank you! Thanks a lot for your contribution Dr. Ismer. It was an honor to talk to you. For sure, the issues you have raised deserve more tables for discussion to inspire and envisage alternative viable solutions inside of the Arabian horse industry. Meanwhile, we on the AHM Team wish you all the very best in your future endeavors!

RUSSIA

ARABIAN HORSES AND THE CAVALRY Many Russian breeders in the 1700s and 1800s had the necessary expertise and huge resources to use the Arabian horse as a foundation for the creation of many breeds. In fact, the Arabian heralded in a new era for these astute breeders. They utilised these wonderful animals to increase the endurance, movement, working ability, soundness, and thriftiness, as well as beauty of their native stock. It was noted the Arabian had the amazing ability to transmit these outstanding characteristics onto their descendants for several generations. In fact, the Arabian had a phenomenal effect on Russia’s horse breeding activities.

Russia, being such a vast and sparsely populated country has for centuries depended upon the horse for its transportation needs. Enormous numbers of quality, sound animals were required by the population for farm, carriage, military, and general-purpose saddle work. The Russian people were connoisseurs of the horse and had a great passion for horse breeding, so it comes as no surprise to find the Arabian horse has long been admired by the Russians for their endurance, soundness, thriftiness, and harmonious form.

The Orlov Trotter (and Orlov Riding Horse) is one of Russia’s most famous breeds and was founded by the Arabian stallions Smetanka and Saltan I. The grey Smetanka, reputed to be a magnificent horse, was purchased by Count Alexis Orlov-Chesmenskii from a Turkish pasha in 1774. Smetanka travelled to Count Orlov’s Khrenovoya Stud in Russia with a military escort, the journey taking two years to complete. Smetanka only stood at stud in 1777 and was crossed with a Danish mare to start the foundation of the Orlov Trotter breed. The chestnut stallion Saltan I came to Russia from Arabia in 1775 and died in 1776, leaving three sons (confusingly named Saltan) and one daughter to carry on his influence as co-founder of the Orlov Trotter. Count Orlov also imported many other horses of Oriental blood to his Khrenovoya Stud. The characteristics of the Orlov Trotter appeared to mirror in many respects the excellent features found in their Arabian ancestors. The breed was noted for its exceptional height, excellent athletic movement, long neck, luxuriant mane, tail and forelock, prominent eye, sturdy legs and long-distance stamina. By 1866, the Orlov Trotter was used for the upgrading of local stock and to produce horses for the Russian army. The Arabian stallions Rishan, Kaimak, and Kadi were imported from Arabia to Russia in 1802 by Count Fyodor Rostopchin. He crossed these Arabians with English, Persian, Kabardin, Karabakh, and Don mares, creating a new breed of horse which was aptly named the Rostopchin. The Kabardin horses were a Russian mountain breed noted

for their surefootedness and were used for both riding and pack horses. The Kabardin developed in the Caucasus and is believed to have resulted from crossing Persian, Karabakh, and Arabians with the local equine populations of the Nogai type and eastern steppe horses. The Karabakh horse was an ancient breed which had great presence and substance and the Arabian influence on this breed was prominent. The Don was developed circa mid-1700s and was important to the army as a cavalry horse. From this fascinating foundation came the Rostopchin breed, which were selected on their working ability and conformation for breeding purposes. After the death of Count Orlov, the Orlov and Rostopchin horses were crossbred and initially called the OrlovRostopchin Horse, eventually evolving into the Russian Riding Horse (also known as Russian Warmblood). These horses were used for International Competition in the late 1800s and were most successful in French and American equestrian events. Actually, many Russian horses made expeditions to European horse shows. In 1873, 44 horses were sent to compete at the Vienna Horse Show, and it was stated eight of these were purebred Arabians and many of the remainder were of Arabian descent.

an ancestor of the legendary Skowronek on his distaff side. Obejan Srebrny was originally sold to Slawuta in 1855, where Prince Roman Sanguszko considered him to be lacking in type and was sold in 1857 to the Russian stud Streletz. Whether Obejan Srebrny lacked type or not seems to be irrelevant, as he certainly had the pre-potency to pass on the necessary characteristics required to co-found such a significant line of horses as the Streletsky. This breed was primarily used to upgrade other Russian stock. The Streletsky horses were exhibited at the 1900 Paris Exposition where the entire team received gold medals.

Two purebred Arabian stallions founded the Streletsky (aka Streletski) breed which was formed in the mid-1800s. Begri Begrein was a grey stallion born in 1826 in the Bahrain Islands and exported into Russia in 1835, where he stood at stud for six years. The grey Obejan Serebrni was born in 1851 at the Polish stud of Count Rozwadowski and was registered by the Poles as Obejan Srebrny. It’s fascinating to note Obejan Srebrny (Obejan oa/Kobey-Han oa) was

By the mid 1800s there were over 40 studs breeding Arabian or Arabian-bred horses. Numerous desert-bred Arabians arrived in Russia during this time. The Imperial Studs Khrevovoye, Derkulsk, Limarev, and Streletz bred very few purebreds, but all were supplied with Arabian and Oriental stallions for cross breeding. Other Arabians arrived from Poland, including the chestnut stallion Hussar oa. He had been presented to the Prince of Wales (Edward VII) during

One of the breeds which the Streletsky horses helped create was the Tersky. This breed is one of Russia’s youngest and was originally used for both saddle and harness work. The Tersky was formed by inbreeding to the Arabian Obejan Srebrny and then crossing the progeny to the Rostopchin horses, later incorporating the bloodlines of the Kabardin, Don, and selected Hungarian horses. The Tersky was officially announced as a breed in 1948. Having many of the Arabian horse’s excellent qualities, the Tersky was well suited as a sport and long-distance riding horse.

his tour of India in 1875 and was shipped to England where he was sold in 1878 at the Islington Agricultural Hall in London and then travelled to Poland. While in Poland he stood at the studs Janiszowka, Uzin, and Szamrajowka before being sent to the Russian stud Streletz. At Streletz, Hussar sired the chestnut stallion Gouneiad (from Egoistka), and Gouneiad was exported to America in 1893, where he held the distinction of being the first Russian horse registered in the American Arabian Stud Book. Wilfrid and Lady Anne Blunt, owners of the Crabbet Park Stud in England, exported a considerable number of horses to Russia in the 1800s. The bay 1876 stallion Pharaoh was purchased in 1878 by Mr Skene in Syria for the Blunts and sent to England in 1879. He was then sold at their first sale to Count Jozeph Potocki for 525 guineas in 1882 for the Antonin Stud in Poland. Count Potocki sold him three years later and he became the principal stallion in the Emperor of Russia’s private stud, eventually moving to the Russian Government stud, Derkoul. It’s noteworthy that the Blunts enquired about repurchasing him in 1891. Colonel Alexandre de Sdanovitch attended the Crabbet Park Summer Sale in 1899 to purchase horses for the Russian Government. At this sale the Colonel bought the bay stallion Naaman (Mesaoud/ Nefisa) along with Dinarzade (Rataplan/Dahna), Dijleh (Ashgar/Dahna), Jeyneyna (Azrek/Jerboa), and Fezara (Merzuk or Mesaoud/Ferida). He also purchased the lovely grey 1879 mare Sobha (Wazir/Selma) for 200 guineas. Sobha was originally imported into England after being purchased from her breeder Mahmud Bey in Cairo. The celebrated chestnut stallion Mesaoud 1887 (Aziz/

Yemameh), purchased from Ali Pasha Sherif by the Blunts in the winter of 1888/9, came to Russia via Poland in 1910. He sired many influential horses at Crabbet Park and a large percentage of these horses went on to create a substantial impact on the Arabian breed throughout the world. It was indeed a tragic loss for Russia and the rest of the world that none of these horses or their Russian descendants survived the ravages of World War I and the Russian Revolution. Two prominent Russians who were fascinated by the Arabian horse in the 1800s were Prince Aleksandr Grigor’Evich Shcherbatov (Sherbatov) and Count Sergei Aleksandrovich Stroganov. They had a great love of horses and after reading about the Blunts’ account of Arabia they decided to travel there together. The Stroganov Family originally came from Novgorod in Russia and had developed vast commercial empires encompassing salt mines, iron mines, fur trading, and farming interests, northeast of Moscow. In 1558 the Stroganov Family were granted virgin lands along the Kama River with rights to establish their own independent province. Eventually, wishing to enlarge their empire, the Stroganovs financed a Trans-Ural expedition in 1581 with their own private army, which was led by Ermak Timofeev, and mainly consisted of Cossacks and a few hundred mercenaries. They defeated Kuchum, the Siberian Khan, and the army claimed the area for the Stroganov family and the Tsar. The Tsar rewarded the services of the Stroganovs with further land grants for opening up the vast Siberian territories. A couple of centuries down the track the Stroganovs were still strong supporters of the monarchy in Russia.

From such a famous and wealthy family emerged Count Sergei Stroganov, who joined with Prince Sherbatov and his wife Princess Olga Aleksandrovich (Stroganov’s sister), to travel to Syria and the North Arabian Deserts in 1888, during the reign of Alexander III. Their journey was organised along the same route the Blunts had travelled six years earlier. I love the fact that the travel agency Thomas Cook organised their trip and the agency supplied an interpreter as well as a Bedouin guide. The guide was Shaikh Nasr Ibn Abdulla. Both Sherbatov and Stroganov wanted to study the Arabian horse in its natural environment in Arabia. During their journey they met many people who remembered the Blunts and they also came across Shaikh Mohammed of the Ibn-Arouk Tribe who had travelled with the Blunts throughout their journeys. On this trip Sherbatov purchased two purebred Arabian stallions and Stroganov purchased two purebred Arabian stallions in Damascus and nine purebred mares were obtained directly from the

Anaza (also known as Anezeh and Anazeh) tribe. Two other stallions were purchased by Count Stroganov, a threeyear-old Kehilan Ajuz and a two-year-old Maneghi Lagra, but they were mated almost exclusively with Kabarda and Kabarda-Arabian mares in Russia. In 1899, both Stroganov and Sherbatov visited Wilfrid Blunt at Crabbet Park in England. They made recommendations to the

Russian Government to purchase horses from the Crabbet Stud. Their next joint venture together to Syria was in 1900. They were fortunate in being able to acquire horses of Oriental breeding from both journeys to Syria. Count Stroganov founded his Arabian horse stud in 1889 at the foot of the Caucasus Mountains in the Stavropol District

Their guide, Shaikh Nasr Ibn Abdulla, visited Count Stroganov in Russia two years later and presented him with two grey Arabian stallions. Visiting Damascus again in 1895 Stroganov purchased three more purebred mares for his stud with the help of Shaikh Nasr Ibn Abdulla. When attending the Paris International Horse

Show in 1900, he bought the grey mare Makbula (Wazir/ Makbula) from the Blunts. Wilfrid Blunt took several horses to Paris to exhibit them at this show. Count Stroganov had great success when he crossed the young Kehilan Ajuz and Maneghi Lagra strained stallions he purchased in Syria with the Kabardin and Kabardin-

Arabian mares. These horses found a ready market with the Russian Army. Count Stroganov believed Arabians had to be bred close to the conditions of those in Northern Arabia, which included a dry continental climate with hot summers, stony soil, and, if possible, good quality ground fodder. He suggested horses bred in stud conditions should be subjected to speed tests on racetracks so as to preserve the Arabians main qualities of speed and endurance. Count Stroganov’s horse management techniques were quite advanced for his era as he fed oats all year round to his purebred stock, except for when grass was plentiful. The horses were shepherded out onto the Steppe at dawn to graze, then brought back at dusk and were given access to water twice daily. The mares were usually ridden at three-years and frequently had their first foals at four. As with many of the earlier importers of Arabians, he found they achieved greater height in future generations than their desert-bred parents.

does not seek to produce any particular type of Arabian, so that no special attention is paid to such points as the shape of the head or the size of the eye.’

He wrote, ‘In selecting the sires and dams, the following should be borne in mind: their over-all leanness, especially lean and strong tendons; a good bone-structure with properly set legs; a good hoof; sound lungs; and, lastly harmonious lines with a proportionate development of each part of the animal: in other words, overall beauty. Then its movements should be correct, powerful and vigorous. On the other hand, the stud

Prince Sherbatov’s horse stud was established in central Russia, and he crossed his purebred Arabian stallions with half-Arabians and Don mares. He wrote an informative booklet entitled ‘The Arabian Horse and its Importance’, which was circulated to studs of that era by the Russian Main Administration for Horse Breeding for feedback about the publication. RUSSIA was required to have the qualities of soundness, hardiness, agility, great constitutional strength, a harmonious but utilitarian build, and, hopefully, a good disposition. These horses were required to carry 265 pounds (120.45 Kilograms) or more in weight and had to be capable of safely carrying a rider at all paces over very diverse terrain. The cavalry horse had to remain sound under adverse weather conditions that included cold, rain, mud, snow, heat, and humidity, often suffering great hunger as well. Many Russian horse breeders considered the Arabian to be the ideal light cavalry horse due to its excellent temperament, soundness, endurance, and frugality with feed and care. To cope with the problem of Russia’s severe climatic changes and enormous distances, it was felt their saddle horses had to be extremely resilient. Due to his vigour and desirable size, the Arabian was considered the perfect horse for these arduous conditions. During the Crimean War (1853/1854) the English Cavalry lost the majority of their Thoroughbred horses due to the privation and miseries of the campaign. The French Light Cavalry rode oriental-bred horses and they easily outlasted the English cavalry. This helped to substantiate the fact Arabianbred horses were much more capable of withstanding the rigors of war than the Thoroughbred. Captain Lewis Edward Nolan, a noted author on cavalry training and tactics who was killed in the tragic Charge of the Light Brigade, wrote in 1852, ‘For ages the finest cavalry in Europe was undoubtedly that of the Turks.’ The Turks rode horses which rarely exceeded 14 hands and these horses were ‘nimble, spirited, and yet docile’ and were of obvious Arabian descent. Russian breeders were not the only people who considered the smaller size and agility of the Arabian horse to be advantageous for their light cavalry. The famous Hungarian Hussars as far back as the 1700s rode horses with more than a fair dash of Eastern blood and these horses were small and lively. The Arabian was favoured by the Russian, Turkish, Hungarian, and Polish aristocrats for hundreds of years. During the invasion of Russia in 1812, Napoleon’s Grand Army lost between 130,000 and 175,00 horses. Even with these horrendous losses many horses survived this wretched ordeal. Hundreds were captured by the Russian peasants, who eventually used them to help improve local breeds. Interestingly, many of these horses were of Arabian bloodlines. Both the French and Russian cavalry were similar in most respects including quality, organisation, and tactics. Perhaps the main difference was the Russian horses on a whole were smaller. These horses were robust animals that had a distinct advantage over the French horses, as the bulk of these were incorrectly shod for the appalling weather conditions they encountered during the retreat from Moscow. A great number slipped on the icy

170 | TUTTO ARABI - www.tuttoarabi.com

roads, never to rise again. The bigger and heavier animals of the French Cuirassiers suffered cruelly as hunger, thirst, and bad weather killed them off like flies. It is perhaps a little ironic that many of the French Cuirassiers either walked out of Russia or rode the incredibly hardy little Russian ponies they begged, borrowed, or stole. The heroic French horses that survived the 1812 campaign were comprised of many Arabians. These noble animals were greatly prized by their owners in recognition of their valiant efforts in reaching the safety of their homeland. Russian breeders also stated the breeding of Arabian and Arabian-bred horses was not as expensive as breeding the Thoroughbred horse. The Thoroughbred required more feed and care than did the Arabian, and this made them a costly animal to produce. The cost of supplying war horses for armies was quite expensive and each cavalry trooper may have required in excess of three horses per year in peace time. While under battle conditions and on the campaign trail, the loss of horses could be quite staggering. For example, horses became a rare commodity during the English Civil War (1642/1649) and the ‘quartermasters on both sides resorted to theft, confiscation, and compulsory purchase in order to mount their troopers’. The King imposed the death penalty for anyone found trying to reclaim their horse from his army. Such was the value of the humble cavalry horse! During the Battle of Assaye, Western India in 1803, every mounted field and staff officer serving with Major General Arthur Wesley (whom became The Duke of Wellington) lost a horse, and one officer had three of his horses killed. Marshal Ney, a principal member of Napoleon’s army, had five of his horses slaughtered in a matter of hours during the battle of Waterloo (1815). The Spanish had several thousand horses killed each year in the wars against France and Portugal. The Prussian Army lost over a million horses in eight months in the Franco-Prussian War of 1870. Maintaining a reserve of horses for military use was imperative in those troubled times. As can be seen, it was not beauty alone that drew the Russian horse breeder’s attention to the incredible Arabian horse. It was certainly due to the foresight and dedication of these Russian breeders in the Nineteenth Century that the Arabian horse was instrumental in both the development and improvement of so many breeds. As Russia marched forward into the Twentieth Century many of these marvellous horses vanished as a result of the death and devastation of World War I and the Russian Revolution. Fortunately, due to the indomitable character of the Russian people, they were able to rebuild their studs and breeding programs in the 1920s and 1930s. The renowned Tersk stud was established during this period and exported its purebred Arabians worldwide. These remarkable Arabians have contributed their own unique qualities to the gene pool of many countries.

The annual Stallion Parade at Jadem Arabians in Belgium is an excellent opportunity to appreciate the beauty of stallions at liberty and to meet other enthusiasts of the Arabian breed. I was lucky to spend the afternoon with the owner of the stud, an experienced judge and an equine expert - Christine Jamar-Demeersseman, who told me an exciting story of how Jadem Arabians has developed over the years into what we all know today – a world renowned stud and the home of many outstanding representatives of the Arabian breed. Over a glass of wine, we talked about her passion for Arabian horses and her appreciation of the Polish bloodlines. Suitably for the occasion, the International Women’s Day, Christine explained how it is to be a woman in this male-dominated industry and highlighted the importance of following one’s dreams. When asked whether she had any advice for me, she said with the utmost certainty: ‘Never give up!’. I believe this is one of the secrets of her own great success.

EKSTERN (Monogramm x Ernestyna)

Kamila: What is so special about Arabian horses that made you choose them among many other horse breeds? Christine: Horses have always been my passion, but those days there were not that many Arabians around. I have always liked sports so when I was 12 years old I took up show jumping and I fell in love with it. Then I got engaged and my future husband did not like the idea of me being away every weekend to take part in a competition. He was quite old fashioned in this respect, preferring his wife to stay at home. I think he was also a little jealous (laughs). What is more, he did not have a clue about horses. So I stayed at home until I was 25 years old. In the meantime, I occasionally took care of my neighbour’s’ Arabians when he was on holiday. This was when I fell in love with the breed and decided to buy my first purebreds. I travelled on my own all over Belgium and Holland in a search for the right individuals. In the north of Holland, my journey was crowned with success. I managed to buy our first two Arabian mares, one bought by me and one bought by my

174 | TUTTO ARABI - www.tuttoarabi.com

fiancé, a few months before our marriage. I started breeding them shortly after. When I decided to show the offspring for the first time, the success exceeded my expectations. The colt that was only 3 months old at that time became a champion beating all yearlings, two- and three year olds. At the same show, the yearling filly won her class. I was over the moon! I never saw it coming. Kamila: That sounds like a really good start and I imagine that also encouraged you to carry on with your breeding. Was it difficult to make your vision come true and what were the challenges? Christine: I think the biggest challenge I faced was that my husband was not so passionate about my hobby as I was. However, I have always wanted to be independent and do things my way. To support my hobby, I wanted to make my own money from selling the foals. In this way, I was fully responsible for my breeding programme and I was free in making decisions. But that also meant my budget was limited and I had to select the breedings very

carefully. At the begging, it was difďŹ cult because I was not as famous as I am now. Luckily, I inherited the great genes of a good horse breeder from my grandfather and great-grandfather, also horsemen. I suppose, breeding is in my blood. Kamila: Has it become easier with time to sell your horses? Christine: My breeding programme is what I love and cherish the most. I also like helping people that have just started their adventure with Arabian horses. I love to buy horses for other breeders and then see them winning in the show ring, which proves I was right in my choice (laughs). There are a lot of things in life which we do not like but we still need doing. If you are truly passionate about something, you simply learn to accept them. No breeder can keep all the foals. On the other hand, there is no greater joy for me than to see the babies born every year. It makes me forget about all the unpleasant things that I need to do. Many times

I have also been asked whether it is more difficult to be a woman in this male dominated world. The answer is: no, it is not. At least not for me. What really matters is your character. I was raised with two brothers though, so I must have been well trained (laughs). Kamila: Why have you chosen Polish bloodlines as an important part of your breeding programme? Christine: This is not a difficult choice when you know the history of Polish breeding. Polish aristocracy started to import breeding stock directly from the Middle East as early as 1800’s. Therefore, their breeding programme is more than 200 years old and very well established. The Poles carefully selected their horses for both beauty and performance. Training on the racetrack has always been a part of this selection process. When I started my breeding programme back in 1978, the first horses I bought were a mix of Crabbet, Polish and Russian bloodlines. As the Russian breeding programme was extreemely popular at that time, I bred my mares to Russian stallions. Their progeny were amazing movers, very refined as young horses, but when they matured, they were gradually losing type. In 1985 I visited Poland for the first time. When I went to the famous Michalow Stud and I saw their mares, I realised that this is exactly what I want to breed! During my trip to Russia in 1986, I had the opportunity to see the Michalow bred stallion Gwizd (Probat x Gwiazda by Elf ) as well as some of his offspring. I was quite impressed with the babies and I fell in love with Gwizd, but then I never imagined that he would become a part of my life and of my breeding programme one day. It all changed in 1990 with the downturn in the US Arabian horse industry, when a lot of horses came on the market. Many Arabians that had earlier been sold at high prices became more affordable for small breeders. Using this opportunity, I bought 11 Polish mares and I leased a son of Bandos – Pyrrus (x Pascha by El Paso). He was my all-time favourite riding horse, an excellent race horse and an amazing show horse in the US, but his progeny were not typey enough. My breeding strategy at that time was to use the Polish bloodlines and even if the foals were not pretty enough, I could still sell them for their performance abilities. The modern Arabian horse has become more and more refined, but we need to be extremely careful not to lose the horse and its riding abilities. In the end, Arabians are exceptionally beautiful horses, but we cannot forget that they are horses and not living statuettes. The challenge I am facing at the moment is to find the balance between beauty and performance. My horses need to be both pretty enough to compete in the show ring as well as good riding horses. With a limited number of available bloodlines, it has become more and more difficult. So

176 | TUTTO ARABI - www.tuttoarabi.com

what I am trying to do now is to continue what worked for me in the past. I try to introduce stallions like Gwizd to my breeding programme and cross them with very typey mares. Foals by Gwizd showed a substantial improvement in type when compared to their dams. At the same time, they inherited big dark eyes, a good neck and an amazing trot. Next year we will see whether this strategy works out yes or no! (laughs). Kamila: Is it always so difficult to predict the final outcome? Christine: It is all about having a dream and trying to make it come true. Another important thing in life is to never give up. If there is something that you really want, never ever give up in your pursuits. 9 times out of 10 it works! A good portion of luck, comes always in handy! Kamila: Speaking of dreams, let us talk about Ekstern. You had chosen him for your breeding programme before he became famous. What was so special about him? Christine: When I first saw him, he looked like a ball of fur! I went to Michalow to see Werbum (Wojslaw x Werda by Piechur) because they were selling him at that time. I liked his damline but when I saw him I knew that my breeding programme would not benefit too much from him. And then I saw Ekstern - a white ball of fur trotting like crazy over the frozen ground in the middle of the Polish winter. He had the most beautiful dark eyes and a very pretty face. I was mesmerised! Besides, he has a short back and a long croup, which I thought would work perfectly for my Eukaliptus and Bandos bred mares that had longer, softer backs and shorter croups. Mrs. Urszula Bialobok, who saw I was interested in this stallion, took me by the arm and led me to her husband’s office. She showed me the pictures on the wall with beautiful white mares that all belonged to the same family as Ekstern. I immediately decided to lease him, but I was told he was not available for lease. I was so determined to have him that later in the evening I called my husband and asked whether we could come back to Michalow in the following week to offer double the usual lease price. Fortunately, this time it worked! I was so happy! I remember when the two directors ( Jerzy Bialobok of the Michalow Stud and Marek Trela of the Janow Podlaski Stud) visited Jadem to have a look at the first foals by Ekstern. The look on their

faces is something I will probably remember for the rest of my life. They could not believe what they saw. They both believed more in Ganges, another Michalow bred son of Monogramm (x Garrona by Fanatyk). Ganges is a very good horse but not really my type. Ekstern was exactly what I wanted. And when he returned to Poland, his best foals were born in Janow Podlaski, possibly due to the fact that the Michalow mares were genetically too close to him. The foals by Ekstern out of the Janow Podlaski mares were both typey and successful on the racetrack. Esktern himself won two races, but according to his trainers, he liked the show ring much more than the racecourse (laughs). Kamila: The Janow mares by Ekstern were usually a massive improvement over their dams. His offspring inherited a lot of his amazing attitude. I remember

when I saw Ekstern in one of the shows in Poland. Mariusz Liskiewicz, who was his handler at that time, could not run as he had gone through a serious illness a few months before and was not completely recovered. He walked and Ekstern was dancing around him. It was a truly unforgettable moment! Christine: Ekstern has always loved to be in the show ring. When he was on lease to Jadem, he was shown by Erik Dorssers. There was a special bond between Erik and Ekstern – they truly loved each other and they were very successful in the show ring together. Everybody will agree with me that it was a pleasure to see Ekstern in the showring. Kamila: Let us talk about another very successful horse – Emerald J. I am really curious how it all started. How did

Christine & Guy

the idea of breeding Emandoria to QR Marc become at all possible? Christine: I was the one who discovered QR Marc in the USA. I purchased him for Mr Gheysens of Knocke Arabians. I loved this stallion very much. At roughly the same time, Emandoria was leased to the USA. When I bought QR Marc and went to collect him, I was accompanied by Greg Gallun as the one that knew the stallion’s owner. On the way to Florida, Greg mentioned that one of his clients leased Emandoria and they had an embryo for sale. My immediate reaction was: I need to have it! So without thinking twice, I decided to buy it. It was very expensive! My own husband had not found out about the purchase until a few weeks before the foal was born. And it took us two years to obtain the embryo. But it was worth a try! I loved Emandoria very much as to me she has always been an embodiment of femininity. A cross of QR Marc with Emandoria was a dream come true and I was obviously hoping for a filly! Two or three weeks before the baby was born I had told my husband that after the Las Vegas show we needed to visit Om El Arab because I was expecting a foal there. He did not say much. I suppose he was well aware that I knew what I was doing. I was a bit disappointed when Sigi Siller called to inform me that it was a colt. When she said that it was a cute colt, but nothing spectacular, I could live with it because his pedigree was really important. I first saw Emerald J when he was about three weeks old. Sigi was right. It was a cute colt with good body and very correct, but nothing outstanding. However, as a yearling Emerald changed completely. I remember that a trainer at that time, suggested that we should try to clip the colt. I asked him to wait till the

178 | TUTTO ARABI - www.tuttoarabi.com

winter was over as it was still pretty cold weather and the horses spent most days outside. The trainer then started to gradually condition Emerald and it was when the colt changed. His offspring are exactly the same. When they are 12 – 18 months old, they change completely. I think it is thanks to the presence of Gazal Al Shaqab in Emerald’s pedigree. Kamila: I thought you might have hoped for a filly. Christine: But now I am really happy that it was a colt. He is such an exceptional stallion, a dream come true. The most important is that he crosses very well with my broodmares. Kamila: I know that it is always a difficult question, but if you were to choose one horse that you have loved the most, which horse would that be? Christine: Ekstern. He really means so much to me! I owe him so much! The mares I bought in the US were good but not exceptional. At that time, I could not afford to buy the pricey mares sold at the Polish auctions. Ekstern managed to vastly improve my breeding programme in just one generation. Some may think it is ridiculous, but I have so much respect for this horse! Every time I saw him in Michalow, he touched me so deeply that I started crying. Please do not laugh at me! Kamila: I would never laugh at you! I feel exactly the same when I see some horses. You cannot help it, they just make you cry! Christine: They do! Director Bialobok knew I felt this way about Ekstern, so every time I visited Michalow, he

PEOPLE liked to add oil to the fire when presenting this stallion in public as he knew it would make me cry (laughs). Ekstern has a special place in my heart. But the truth is that I love all my horses. Emerald J is now on lease to Ariela Arabians in Israel and I know they take very good care of him, but I still miss him a lot. Kamila: I wish I could have seen him today. Christine: I am sure you would love him. He is bigger and much more masculine than his sire. Playing and showing off is what he loves the most. QR Marc is a very sweet horse who does not really like to play, which is quite unusual for a stallion. Kamila: There is no doubt that you are a very successful breeder, but if there was one thing that you could change, what would that be? Christine: When I purchased horses from the US in 1990, I would have bought fewer mares but of higher quality. I had two very good ones, with the rest being just mediocre. Buying higher quality mares would have probably saved me some time. Luckily, Ekstern managed to vastly improve my breeding stock. He saved my life (laughs). Kamila: Actually, Ekstern also owes you a lot. It was you who discovered him. His breeders were not as excited about him as you were when he was back from the racetrack. Christine: Both directors could not believe how successful he was. I still remember that he received the score of 14 times 20’s in the Towerlands Championships in the UK, the first A-show that he attended. To be honest with you, I was equally surprised to see him showing off like that. Even the judges were curious about where I had found this stallion. Kamila: Let us talk a bit about judging. As an accomplished international judge, what advice have you got for a person that would like to pursue this career path? Christine: I believe that one of my strongest points as a judge is the fact that I spent a lot of time learning from people that judged sport horses. For almost 10 years I was shadowing one of the best judges of warmblood horses in Holland. Observing sport horses teaches you

Jadem Arabians bvba Christine Jamar-Demeersseman

all about the structure and conformation of a horse, i.e. how a good leg should look like. If you think you do not need it as a judge of Arabian horses, you are wrong! You need it to tell the difference between a very good horse and a superhorse. Preparing to be an independent judge involves a lot of studying as well as shadowing more experienced judges. Another highly effective method is to learn from the experts that spent most of their lives breeding horses. One very important thing I have learnt from an American breeder is that a horse must be happy to win. This is what I always tell my trainers. Kamila: You have an amazing team of handlers at Jadem! Christine: I do, but I have to train them too! Sometimes I ask them to take the pressure off. The horses cannot cope when stimulated too much. You really need to know when to stop. It feels as if the horses talked to me. I can always tell when something is wrong. Kamila: Is it one of the secrets of your success that you understand the horses so well? Christine: I think it is true about all the breeders who truly love their animals. If one of mine feels unwell, I will immediately know that I need to go to the barn. It is something I cannot explain. Maybe in a few years I will find out what that is. It may be just a lucky guess, but I think it is the love and passion for Arabians that make Christine understand the horses so well. If you could only see the sparkle in her eyes every time she mentioned Ekstern… She dedicated her whole life to breeding and promoting Arabians, being one of the greatest ambassadors for the breed nowadays. It was a great privilege and honour to be the one with whom Christine shared the amazing story of her success. The success that required a lot of hard work, determination and risk-taking, but was definitely worth the effort. ‘Never give up!’ - a cliché that I had heard a hundred times before, acquired new meaning when used by a person who actually put this belief into practice. The story of Jadem Arabians could be an inspiration to anyone who is unsure about pursuing their dreams. Without a doubt, it has been an inspiration to me! ❑

Endurance riding with show horses is it even possible? Frequently we get the question If it is possible to start a show horse in endurance. Our first answer is YES you can! That being said there are some things you have to keep in mind when starting your show horse in endurance. Let’s start with the benefits your show horse has compare to endurance horses. 1. Your show horse has already learned to travel long distances to the show so it has no stress on the trailer and calmly eats his hay until he arrives at the showground.

ASE Marajó (Marajj x Manilah) during the CEI 2* in Pisa

2. Your horse is used to spent the night in a strange stable surrounded by horses he doesn’t know. Therefor it is used to eat hay which tastes different than the hay he has at home and is used to drink different water and also to drink out of buckets. 3. Your show horse is already familiar with all kinds of noises so he will not spoke easily. 4. Most show horses have a very low heartrate and fast recovery which can give you a lot of benefit during the endurance race. Of course there are also some down sides of the show horse

Endurance in endurance. Nowadays the focus on the modern show horse is more on head and neck. The more upright the horse, the steeper the shoulder will be, the more difficult it is to show free movement from the front, which is essential in endurance. Also the modern show horse pays less attention on the legs and movement than in the older days. And with no legs, no horse! With the legs I don’t just mean the correctness of the leg itself, but also the size of the hoofs. Are they equal in size? What else you need for endurance. A strong back. Not long and soft which most of the times comes with the long neck

Also you need to have a nice character. A horse that likes to work together with you as a team and loves to work in general. When you find a show horse that can check most of the features mentioned above, than you have a good chance to go far in endurance, even when your horse has a beautiful face!

your training to about 4 hours a week. I normally train the young horses 30 minutes every other day in the riding arena to build up strength and in the weekend I go to the forest for 1,5 to 2 hours. Just relaxing, doing mostly walk, a little trot and just a few minutes of galop. After three months of training the horse is ready for it’s first endurance race of 20-30 km. At the start of the endurance race, there is a vet check. Here they check the heartbeat of your horse and if he had enough to eat and drink so he is fit enough to start. Also they check the locomotion. This means you have to trot your horse in a straight line from the vet and back. We sometimes see that the show horses recognize this from the shows and put their tail up complete with snort and blow. 20km sounds like a long distance but it is really easy to do and normally takes 90 – 120 minutes to complete. Just take your time and enjoy the ride! Step by step you go further and faster and before you know it you are participating at the long distances of 120 and 160km!

My endurance horses I myself started in endurance with my mare ASE Bisiriya Hlayyil. She is a granddaughter of Hlayyil Ramadan (Salaa el Dine) and comes out of our foundation mare Manilah who is by Radamess II (Salaa el Dine) and out of Marischka (Plakat). Bisiriya has a very extreme face and was a silver medal show champion as a junior filly. She has a lot of workeffort. She has won multiple races of 20, 40 and

Later she took the 3rd place at the CEI 2* of 120 km in Babenhausen, Germany with an average speed of 15.59 km/h. She was also selected for the world championships endurance in 2017. Which we skipped due to her breeding obligations. Another show champion in endurance is the breeding stallion ASE Marajรณ. As a junior he won the gold medal at the show in Milan as well as a silver medal at several shows in Holland and Belgium. ASE Marajรณ is a son of Marwan al Shaqab and comes out of the mare Manilah, who is also the mother of the mare we mentioned above. Marajรณ was Bronze National Champion endurance over a distance of 60km with an average speed of 16,70 km/h. He also won numerous 60km and 40km endurance races and won the 4th place at the CEI 1* of 80km in Neustadt-Dosse, Germany. The stallion ASE Myandour won in 2016 the CEI 1* in Kilkis, Greece with Arianne Venizelou. He is a son of Marhaabah (Marwan al Shaqab) and comes out of the champion show mare Dakaree, who is by Dakar el Jamaal and comes out of Ultimate Fancy by WN Ultimate Star. Dakaree was later sold to Al Shaqab stud. Dakaree is also the mother of ASE Falaree who is by Fadi al Shaqab. This mare, Falaree, won the 40km in Ankum, Germany in 2019 where she won the prize of best condition. In 2020, she won the 53km in Leende, The Netherlands. 212 | TUTTO ARABI - www.tuttoarabi.com

The best show lines for endurance It is hard to tell which lines are the best for endurance. At the moment, Gazal al Shaqab offspring are very popular as they are known for their low heartrate and incredible fast recovery. Some of the successful progeny of Gazal in the endurance are: ASE Bisiriya Hlayyil at the CEI 2* in Babenhausen

Zloty Wiatr out of Zlota Wieza. This horse won the CEI 1* of 100 km at the HH Sh. Khalid B Hama al Khalifa cup with an average speed of 21 km/h. He was also second at the CEI 2* 120km race in Shakhir with an average speed of 23.3 km/h. The horse MSA Silver Gazal won several CEI 2* endurance races in the States. He is out of of G Silver Rain by Menes. The gelding Emimbor out of Emika (Eldon) won the CEI 1* in Dubai with an average speed of 28.08 km/h. ASE Bisiriya Hlayyil

The gelding Bazyliszek won the CEI 3* in Zakrzow with an average speed of 16.3 km/h including other wins and second places at the CEI 2* events. The bay gelding Hilal S out of Waltz Away (Gondolier) also had a fabulous endurance career with many second places at CEI 2* events in Europe.

Manilah (Radamess II x Marsischka

It’s been said that the endurance features of Gazal come from his sire Anaza el Farid. His son named Al Adham (originally named ZT Faraventure), coming out of ZT Garaventure not only won the CEI 3* three days endurance of in total 240km in Bouthib with an average speed of 22.14 km/h but a month later he also won the CEI 3* 160km President Cup in Abu Dhabi in 2007 with an average speed of 23.91 km/h which was very fast in that time. He was also known for his low heartrate and very fast recovery. Over the years Zichy Thyssen horses proof to be quite good endurance horses.

Rahyeelah ďŹ nished several CEI 1* and CEI 2* races successfully. Most recent she won the 2nd place at the CEI 2* of 120km in Denmark with an average speed of 16.15 km/h.

My experience taught me that also Ali Jamaal bloodlines can give low heartrates and they have a very strong determination which can help you on the longer distances. They are no quitters! Personally I ride my direct Ali Jamaal daughter in endurance as well and she is always the first one to be presented at the vet, despite her older age of 18! I also like the Egyptian lines in the endurance. They also have a great mindset.

Do you want to stay at the lower endurance level until 80km? Then it doesn’t matter what pedigree your horse has or how much he looks like a pure show horse. Just relaxed and have fun! Any horse can successfully finish the 20-30km’s and even until 80km most horses get through! It is worth the try! ❑

ASE BISIRIYA HLAYYIL 2008 - 2020 †

by Talitha Bakker ❚ photos by Gregor Aymar, Glenn Jacobs, Arabian Stud Europe archive

Once in a lifetime, you come across a mare that is so special, she affects the life of many people around the world. Bisiriya was that mare. She touched the souls of so many people. Her loss was more than saying goodbye to a horse. It was saying goodbye to a friend, a legend, an icon in the Arabian Horse world. They say it is always those special ones who are the first ones to leave. In the nearly twelve years that she was with us, Bisiriya changed the lives of many and left a strong footprint in this world. A legacy carried out by her four sons and four daughters and by many of her (great) grandchildren.

www.tuttoarabi.com - TUTTO ARABI | 217

B

The beg beginning The story of Bisiriya began in a small town called Hierden, close to the city of Harderwijk, The Netherlands. It was here, at Arabian Stud Europe, where her mother Manilah gave birth accompanied by her owner Talitha and two of her best friends, Lineke and Hananja. Looking back on that day, the delivery of the foal did not really go to plan. Everything went well, but the little filly didn’t take a breath. While Lineke watched in horror, Hananja and Talitha tried to get the filly to breathe. Nothing seemed to help. Then suddenly, out of the blue, the filly took a huge breath of air, spooking Talitha and Hananja, who ran to the far end of the stable, looking like they had just seen a ghost. The filly however, was very much alive and her first whinnies echoed through the full moon night sky. From that day, Bisiriya was the clown of the farm. Always happy, always in for a joke, and from day one already so loved by everyone around her. In her first years, she grew up as a strong independent girl, often wandering off to see if the grass was greener on the other side. No fence could stop her. She would go under on her knees or would just squeeze her body in between the two lower and upper bars of the fencing. If her head would fit, she would find a way to escape. She even escaped her stable and found her way inside the house and into the bedroom where she eat not only all of the plants but also some jewelry! She continued to be an escape-artist until she was in foal for the first time. Thank God! Since that day, she felt she had responsibilities and took good care of her baby.

Offspring Offsp Her first foal was ASE Faraaj, a son of the then still unknown stallion RFI Farid, who was just imported from Brazil. Faraaj was extraordinary. Always with his tail up, ready to give a show. He won many champion titles at the show, including the title Best in Show and National Reserve champion colt. After his top Five win at the futurity in Aachen, he was sold to Kuwait where he started a legacy of his own.

The last photo to be taken of Bisiriya and her unborn foal, March 2020

When Faraaj was weaned, Bisiriya was started under saddle by top endurance rider Marijke Visser who was working at the farm at that time. It was then that we discovered that Bisiriya had a great talent for endurance riding, showing low heartrates and fast recovery times. She also had a great work ethic and a strong will to please. In 2013 Bisiriya was leased to Simone Leo from Italy, who she gifted with a beautiful filly from Amir Ashiraf. That filly was later sold to a friend of Talitha’s, not far from Harderwijk.

Endurance Enduran After this filly, it was decided to only breed Bisiriya by embryo transfer, so she could pursue her endurance career. She had such talent, that within two years, she was already racing her first International endurance race in 2016. Together with Marijke Visser and her Reserve World champion endurance mare Laiza de Jalima, Bisiriya, ridden by Talitha Bakker finished the CEI 1* with so much ease and an average speed of 16,8 km/h, finishing the last round with 19,18 km/h and great recovery times. Later that year, in October, Bisiriya also finished 3rd at the CEI 2* of

120 km in the hills of Babenhausen, Germany, ridden by the talented young rider Imke Lamsma. In between the races, we were able to get two embyos from Bisiriya, and in 2017, we bred her again to self-carry by the stallion RFI Farid. The outcome was a fantastic colt, born in 2018, named ASE Farhan. Farhan had big shoes to fill as his full brother had done so well in the showring. But ASE Farhan not only fulfilled his promise, he exceeded all expectation by winning 8 golden medals, one Best in Show title, One title of Best bred Dutch horse and the title of National Champion colt. He is currently sold to Ultima Stud in Switzerland.

There are still three offspring of Bisirya at Arabian Stud Europe. One beautiful filly by Kahil al Shaqab named ASE Kamiliya Hlayyil, who is a reflection of her mother, showing the same exoticism and dancing moves. The second one is a stallion by ZT Magnanimous named ASE Magnificent, who is currently in endurance training with Anne Wegner in Germany. The third one is the stallion ASE Juilliard by Da Vinci FM, who is slowly building a legend for himself. At the age of three, Juilliard already sired a National Reserve champion and a bronze medal champion! With his ultra-exotic face, beautiful eyes and strong body, legs and movement, he embodies everything Talitha was looking for when searching for the perfect cross. His first filly, ASE Juilliette out of ASE Sayuri shows great potential and was recently sold to Israel to pursue her show- and future breeding career.

It w was also in the winter of 2017 that we met Diaa Karaali of Al Dawla Arabians, Australia. He had heard from Bisiriya and wanted to come and see her to hopefully add some of her magical genes to his breeding program. He leased her for two seasons and was gifted with two amazing daughters. Bisharat al Dawla by RHR Heir of Marwan and the exotic Adalat al Dawla by WH Justice, who was just born a month before her mothers passing. It is special to see such a happy, lively filly dancing through the fields of Arabian Stud Europe, knowing her biological mother just passed away. Both Diaa and Talitha feel blessed to have these special daughters in their lives and to know Bisiriya will live on, not only in these two, but in their children and grandchildren.

Memories of ASE Bisiriya Hlayyil “Bisiriya to me was the love of my life. My soulmate, my loyal companion. I have great memories of her, roaming the hills of Belgium, galloping the forest lanes… One memory that will particularly stay with me is how she would always react to clients coming over to see her. When they called to see the Queen Bisiriya and I pointed to the big round mare in the field, quietly eating the grass, they would all raise an eyebrow. Is this the great Bisiriya they heard so much about? I would then take a lead rope, put it around her neck and she would slowly follow me. Her head low, close to my shoulder. Then I would turn her loose and she would just stand there, in the middle of the arena. But the moment that I would pick up my whip with the plastic bag, she knew just what to do. Putting her tail up, snort and blow, dancing around the arena, circling around the clients, rear up, jump forward, show some more and then to end her performance, just in front of the client, blowing so hard that their hats would fly off. Leaving the clients bedazzled with their mouths open. Totally in awe with her beauty and charisma. Bisiriya would always do this. It was her thing. As she truly was the clown of our stud and we loved her for it. Loosing Bisi has left a huge emptiness in my soul, shattered my heart. Although I still feel her strongly around me every day, it still feels unbearable to continue this life without her. I take strength from watching her daughters dance in the fields and with the thought of the last gift she granted us at her deathbed. Thank you Bisi, for always giving us everything you got. For being you and for being my soulmate. I will miss you and will never forget you.. Until we meet again!” ~ Talitha Bakker – Arabian Stud Europe, The Netherlands “It was December 2017 I made my trip from Sydney Australia to Netherlands. My final destination was Arabian Stud Europe, my aim was to meet ASE Bisiriya Hlayyil. A well trusted European breeder, Talitha Bakker, has bred a highly recommended mare by all those involved in the art of Arabian horse breeding whom I have come across during my many passionate conversations while in European shows and farms. Having the honor of meeting her for the first time was a then cold winter morning where everything and everyone was resisting motion. The only thing my memory captures to have emerged from a still image is Bisi firing away with a steaming motion and a warm emotional memory burning its traces into my memory, never to ever be forgotten from that moment on. Having two dream fillies out of this beauty Queen by my favorite two stallions, RHR Heir of Marwan and WH Justice has taken this experience from my world of fantasy to the real world of Arabian breeding through which Bisi will live on and continue to influence my life.” ~ Diaa Karaali – Al Dawla Arabians, Australia “I met Bisiriya in 2011 and I was immediately in love with her. She was one of those mares that really live up to your imagination when you meet her. She was a lovely quiet mare to just have in field. To watch her, enjoy her. She was lovely with kids and a great mare in endurance, where she was full of fire. She was also a great broodmare as she produced only champions. I tried to lease her. I asked Talitha many times. And finally I got lucky and was able to lease her and to share part of her life. Bisiriya is a mare the world will miss. It is not easy to find a mare like Bisiriya. Such good type, such easy character, her huge eyes and extreme good face. She was a great mover too, although she didn’t like to show it at the shows which was smart as she could enjoy her time at home instead! I am really sad about her loss. I hope Bisiriya will live on in her children and grandchildren. And when we remember her name, we will think about her with a smile as she gave only good things to this world. ~ Simone Leo – Tutto Arabi, Italy It was early 2016 when I planned an endurance race with one of my own mares. Just hours before the start of the race, Talitha called me with the request if I was interested to ride her mare Bisiriya in the race instead as Talitha had hurt her back and was unable to ride. I didn’t know Bisiriya back then but when I saw all the pictures and video, no was no longer an option. I have enjoyed 80km of this amazing mare. Right from the start I felt a connection and loved her comfortable galop and her happiness and how proud she was. She would glow when you would tell her what a good girl she was and was so sweet to someone who she never met. Later that season, I started her also on the CEI 2* of 120km in Babenhausen, Germany. Bisi was really fit and did some happy jumps prior to the start. We were both really looking forward to this race. I enjoyed her so much, that full 120km. She has such a good work attic. Even though she might got a bit tired on the way, she refused to give up and in a fresh and happy galop she passed the finish line! A successful finish of the 120km and a 3rd place! Who says show Arabians cannot perform in sport! I am so grateful for all the memories I have of Bisi and she will be greatly missed. ~ Imke Lamsma, The Netherlands Bisiriya was the perfect example of our breed. She was a Unicorn and had all the perfect features we love so much about the Arabian Horse. I was in love with her big dark eyes that had such a loyal and caring look but that could also be full of fire and joy. Bisi has always had a special place in my heart. She was so sweet and made me laugh countless of times. Especially when I was cleaning her paddock and she would show us her “Bisi-move”. This contains of a buck, followed by a circle and then a perfect rear. A thing she also passed on to her children. Even without any reason, Bisi could just decide it was show time and she loved it when you would cheer her on. I had the honor to be the first one to ride her under saddle and she was so gentle and easy to ride! She was so soft in my hands, always thinking along. With her intelligence she was just like all Arabian horses should be and she is what I picture to be the perfect endurance horse. So beautiful, so sweet. Such a great work attic and with her incredible fast recovery she was unique in the sport, doing her job so well! I loved Bisiriya and she is my perfect example of an Arabian horse. She will be greatly missed ~ Marijke Visser

Tre Balzane Stud was founded almost 30 years ago in the Umbria region of Central Italy, Here, horse breeding is done the traditional way and when it yields successes, they are not just accidental. We take responsibility for our horses, as we have learned that whatever we give to them, they will return: only a happy horse is a beautiful horse.

However, Espadrilla’s brilliance is a mirrored reflection of her dam, Emanacja, a daughter of Eukaliptus and one of the most important Polish broodmares of all time, Emigracja. Espadrilla’s bloodlines are priceless as they are a combination of the most

important ever bred by Michalow and Janow Podlaski State Studs. It is Equiborn’s irreplaceable dam line that makes him so unique and sets him apart from every other son of QR Marc. It is also the reason he is such a tremendous asset to breeders around the world. A gift like Equiborn K.A is meant to be shared with others. In November of 2018, David Boggs met with Paul Gheysens and Tom Schoukens of Schoukens Training Center, Belgium for a presentation of horses including Equiborn K.A. David was awestruck by the pearl white stallion. Mr. Gheysens expressed his desire to position QR Marc’s best sons around 238 | TUTTO ARABI - www.tuttoarabi.com

the world and to make them available to breeders everywhere. Plans were immediately made to bring Equiborn K.A. to America. David Boggs cannot contain his excitement about this special stallion, “We are honored to represent Paul and Ria Gheysens, Knocke Arabians, and Equiborn K.A. at Midwest Training and Breeding Centre. We are so proud to present him to breeders here in America. Equiborn K.A. has a great pedigree and most important, he embodies all the great horses in his pedigree —stallions and mares—which is critical for breeding. He has so many wonderful traits: big, beautiful eyes, great ears, correct conformation, a well 240 | TUTTO ARABI - www.tuttoarabi.com

laid-back shoulder, a naturally high tail set and great movement; he should get 20’s for movement! “Equiborn has been very well received here in the United States by judges and breeders. He’s been shown on a limited basis, due to his breeding schedule. However, he has already won important titles including Arabian Breeders World Cup, Las Vegas Bronze Champion Stallion and Gold Champion Stallion at the Arabian Breeders National Finals in Scottsdale. Breeders will have more opportunities to see him during the upcoming show season. Most important, we look forward with indescribable excitement to his first foal crop arriving in the spring of 2020.

Interviewed by Sonja Smaldone Interviewing DC’s is something we do not often do, so I wanted to bring to light and underline the constituent parts of this profession by talking to Mr. Farhang Fazeli from Iran. He was very pleased to walk me through the main aspects of his personal experience as a Disciplinary Commissioner inside of the Arabian Horse show industry.

Who is Farhang Fazeli? Please share with us some background to you and your family. I was born in a horsey-family. My father is still a Veterinary practitioner, so I have been with horses since I was a teenager. After I finished university, I started breeding Arabian horses seriously, actually I was the first person after Islamic Revolution in Iran, in 1979, who concentrated on breeding and promoting a new generation of the Arabian horse. As you might know, Iran is one of the oldest countries in the world with Arabian horses, but, what I was looking for it was new bloodlines and new breeding programs. My daughter Neela is a big fan of Arabian horses although she is only 7, but, we talk a lot

about this beautiful creature so I hope she will continue what I have done and I still do for my native country. Farhang, when did you meet an Arabian horse for the first time? The journey with a new generation - or let’s say a new type of Arabian horses - started in Poland in 2005-2006. I could visit private breeders and state-studs for my very first time, and I got simply hypnotized by the stunning quality and beauty of their horses. Ever since that time, I have been travelling to Poland every year and I still have many good friends which makes Poland like a second home to me. When and why did you start this profession as a DC? That’s a nice question! I was sitting in a restaurant with Tomasz Tarczynski, who is still one of my best friends, talking about horses on the way to visit Sylvatica Arabians. At some point, Tomasz came up with an idea and said to me out of the blue: “Let’s try to become ECAHO officials, I will maybe start as a Judge and you as a Disciplinary Commissioner”. After many years, he has become an A-list judge, for sure one of the best, while I am an A-list Disciplinary Commissioner. Pity that Tomasz didn’t come up with the idea of being on the list of Forbes top 100 billionaires in the world! 244 | TUTTO ARABI - www.tuttoarabi.com

What is the core of your work? What does a DC exactly do during an Arabian Horse show competition? I believe many people still underestimate the job and jurisdiction of DCs at shows. The main responsibility is to work for the welfare of the participating horses; the second one, it is to ensure a very fair com-

petition for all the exhibitors. As matter of fact, the job of a DC starts before the show and finishes after the show, it is not as easy as it looks. During a show if everything goes wrong, it’s the job of DCs to take care of it. So, as a DC, I have to stay sharp from the beginning until the end of the show, making sure that everything is under control and that the rules of Blue Book are being applied in details. All sorts of complaints are made to DCs during a show and, sometimes, in less than a second, I am required to decide what to do to solve the issue.

If any, which is one of the most frequent complaints that you can hear about the disciplinary process at shows? “Don’t interrupt my horse presentation!”. This is what my DC collegues and I commonly hear at shows…Of course, it is never our intention to interrupt some handlers, but, sometimes, we have to!

PEOPLE

In your opinion what really defines a good and reliable DC? 6. I believe honesty comes first, then you have to have some natural ability to serve as a manager but, even more than that, you got to have personality! When you appear in a showground, you should forget about all the friendships. The Blue Book is the only friend during a show! Being a manager with an ability to handle multiple tasks is also important as sometimes, in some shows, you can also be required to assist as an accountant, as a speaker, as an organizing team member, as a show officer, and so forth‌ A lot of animal activists would argue that horses are often subjected to ill-treatment at shows. Any thoughts? In general, this is NOT the case, but, there are many cases with evidence that the answer is YES unfortunately! This is more likely to happen among unprofessional handlers whom are trying to be like the famous handlers without knowing the basics of the horses. Any specific goals for the next year? For the year 2020, I am going to organize an event in Tehran to promote Arabian horses. This will be some time in May, after which I am looking forward to being on the National list of judges to get more experience about horses in general. Fahrang, anything else you want to add and say to our readers? Please read the Blue Book at least once. If you are an exhibitor, this will be very helpful both for you as a handler and for us as DC’s in order to have a better cooperation at shows. Finally, all of you are more than welcome to come and visit my Farm in Tehran. You will have a very pleasant and unforgettable stay. I promise! Thanks a lot for your contribution Mr. Farhang. It was such a pleasure talking to you. On behalf of the entire AHM Team, I wish you all the best in your future endeavours.
