TRANSFORMATION POTENTIAL OF EXISTING BUIDLINGS ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN, ENVIRONMENTAL, ECONOMIC AND SOCIAL IMPACT
THESIS ABSTR ACT
Construction industry accounts for almost 40% of CO2 emissions through construction and operation of buildings. While cuts in the use phase of the buildings is addressed through more strict energy efficiency requirements, that is not the case with the construction phase, and the emissions from the new construction are still increasing. Thus, the main question this thesis is trying to answer is: "Is demolishing of the existing buildings necessary and justifiable?"
OF TRANSFORMATION EXISTING BUILDINGS
A mapping of performance of existing buildings will be done to illustrate the transformation potential of them. It includes 3 pillars of sustainability and analyses, possible outcomes with arguing whether it is better to be transformed or demolished and replaced with a new building.

Building transformation guide, also called RE, serves as condensed summary of the master's thesis. The most important takeouts, workflows and guidelines on how the transformation project could be approached are described. Instead of having a blank plot to start with, an existing building and its history needs to be analysed in search for opportunities to reuse already invested values.
Furthermore, sustainability is defined through three pillars environment, society and economy. Special atention was invested in order to take all three pillars into account, rather than focusing only on one, which unfortunately can be seen in a lot of occasions.

The tower is visual focal point for the campus with its iconic SkyBar, but it is scaled appropriately to its surroundings, respecting the character of the campus and limiting its shading impact to the area. The podium occupies the lower three levels, offers ample common space for memebrs of the public, students and buidling tenants to interact with one another. The 303 integrates its public space into the fabric of the campus and also houses all the occupants transportation needs with an underground parking for cars and bicycles. It is designed for rapid construction using sustainably sources Scandinavia timber which is assembled in an innvovative modular construction system for a low embodied energy and carbon footprint. Working with wood brought also several constrains and contribute into the final building shape. Shorter spans with narrower floor plate and stringent fire safety and evacuation requirements were integrated into the design from the start. On the other side, the core material wood is being celebrated with materials choices and spaces compositions. One of the goals for the buidling was to be well connnected to its surroundings and ensure easy pedestrian traffic. It ment to preserve the North and South axis between the xisting buidling 310 and newly designed 303. The Cafeteria was positioned along the central courtyard as well as access to the bicycle parking. In fact, all high - usage facilities are located in the pedestal for easy access to students and members of the public.

The organic shapes of the vertical shading fins which are made of folded perforated steel panels creates a dynamic fac;ade which draws the eyes upward. Their white color reflects a diffuse light into the interior. The ground floor atrium uses the warm colors of wood, the massive columns and the irregular everchanging light filtering through the green wall to create an inviting calm space, reminiscent of a forest floor. Throughout the building's interior and exterior the ubiquitous presence of plants freshens the air and lightens the atmosphere in the public spaces

An optimized shading strategy was crucial to reducing the cooling load during the summer as there is a high percentage of glazing. The vertical fins we have developed are made of a folded perforated steel sheet. Krone brand PassivHaus certified Danish windows were selected as they have an exceptionally low U-value, a low emissivity coating and very low linear losses, which is important as the building has a high glazing percentage to ensure daylight autonomy in the office. The fiber cement panels were selected for their finish, durability and fire resistance.

We found that increasing height of the window off the ground had a more beneficial effect on daylight penetration into the spaces than the window width, that window area below the desk height had no discernible benefit for lighting, and that fewer and larger windows reduced the amount of linear losses, thus improving energy performance. To increase the clear height, the suspended ceiling was offset as far as possible from facade and the window placed furthur off the floor.

UNDERSTANDING THE TASK
BUILDING SYSTEM CONCEPT
The architectural concept of the CASMAZ buidling sytem has been developed based on the existing leisure house at Hejrevcenget in the northern part of Sealand (photo above). The one storey house was built in 2018, with the primary structural and design material being timber. The sloped roof of the house allows light to enter, and thereby states that room depth and room height are important factors when creating quality buidlings.
The concept of the CASMAZ building system aims to improve traditional vacation homes by accelerating the often slow and tedious building process.
Original buidlnig process is rather long, since the structural system of the house is being built and assembled on the site. Especially in Scandinavia a bad weather often poses a threat to strucutral system that is being made on the site, since the moisture can develop into mold and create bad and potentially harmful indoor climate. That is one of the main problems that developed CASMAZ system is adressing.
CASMAZ is based on a time saving modular approach that has several advantages such as prefabricated elements, no risk of weather delay, lower volume of waste, and significantly reduced labor costs - because no building prerequisites are needed!

REDESIGN During the recent years in Denmark, a tendency in increasing square meters per person for leisure houses can be seen. But with sustainability in mind there are significant benefits to be gained by the opposite - reducing the living area of a person, since lighting, heating, cooling, and waste management all depend on building size.

MODULAR APROACH
BUILDING PROCESS
The CASMAZ building system consists of multiple components with the purpose of accelerating and facilitating the common/prevailing building process.
The buidling process consists of six easy steps that could be done by anyone and no proffesional is needed. The foundations are not included in the visuals below but the process is being descriped in the full project proposal.
Components are to be prefabricated with great precision in manufacturing facilities with necessary tools and materials. The system can be divided into three main categories; wall, floor and roof, which are each subdivided into 3 subcomponents; structural, internal and external components. For simplicity and recognizability all components are made using the same prnciple.

AURORA HOUSE
SOLAR DECATHLON CHINA 2021
''Aurora is the morning light. It shines the hope for the new day. A home is a place, you feel good. Aurora will be such home, where sustainable and Scandinavian-rooted ideas create a flexible home for the universe market "
The design-choices discuss to what extend the house needs to be agile and technically 'smart'in order to be sustainable and create a healthy environment. The project strives for "less" rather than "more" - "passive" rather than "active". The smart connections are in the inhabitants' mind and the house can, with simple features, help and encourage the user to make choices that are truly smart. These choices make life better without excess consumption of anything.
IV.
DESIGN CONCEPT The Aurora house is designed in a unique period where multiple drivers of change, such as climate change, biodiversity loss, urbanization, and pandemics are coming together and causing unexpected and rapid changes to human life and society. The house needs to provide its inhabitants with safety, social and private life, creative activities and fit life within the privacy of the home. The Aurora house is where public and private action spaces interact in a flexible way. A lot of things has changed with pandemic resricions and many public activities became not possible and were moved to homes. With the correct attitude, these new experiences can lead to a new type of happy and healthy lifestyle.
Aurora is designed to have public, semi public and private spaces which are flexible and easily adaptable through minimal physical changes. The concept also anables the possibility to create multi-story or raw housing options with very littlle changes to the main structure and initial design. This ability of a house to be flexible and last through time is what Aurora aims to achieve with its 1.5 concept. The 1.5 home, contains a home for a family of 3 and a smaller second 0,5 home that could be used as a studio, work-space, fitness area, etc. It is flexible towards the people living there and the many functions it might have in its lifespan. The house is smaller than the average European house at around 25 m2 per person. A smaller house means lower embodied energy, lower heating and cooling needs, less used material, less work for maintenance and a smaller price tag. Small housing is becoming a conscious choice, not only due to economics but increasingly as a preference for a lifestyle that minimizes its impact on the environment .

DESIGN PROPOSAL The design proposal takes place in close proximity to Vysehrad, a historic fort in Prague, that was the oldest seat of Czech princes. Right on the opposite side of the street, three famous villas are located, with the cubistic Kovarovic villa being the most famous one. Those facts played impotant role in material selection and shape concept. Simple rectangular shape with bricks reflect strenght from the fort while large windows enlighten the structure and provide with sufficient daylight. Villa has great public transport connection with the whole city as well as pedestrian accecc to the city center. The final design provides home for three families in apartments with separate access, garden or terrace and common underground parking. The total floor area of the house is prox. 300 m 2 .

Different types of drawings has to be prepared. Example above shows a step-by-step process of how a new elevator shaft is created in the existing building. Firstly, construction need to be shored next to the edges of the opening. Next, the opening is being slowly made by jackhammer from the top floor to the basement. Before buidling a shaft, a new foundation will be casted and steel piles installed. After the shaft frame is ready, brick walls will be done and new beam, paraI el to the facade, will be casted.
