Summer KICK OFF
A
s we kick off the start of the summer season it can’t go unnoticed for what a year it’s been. When we rang in 2020 none of us could have imagined how the months ahead would unfold the way they did. This July 4th will look different but in many ways it will feel like the summers of yesterday when things seemed simpler and when time seemed to stand still. Small family gatherings, backyard bbq’s, playing with sparklers at dusk and watching fireworks on tv will be what we do. Despite politics and the racial divide among us, this year more than ever, let’s come together to acknowledge our nation's birthday. It’s in difficult times when we are presented with an opportunity to do better. This time in history has taught all of us to slow down, to stand still in hopes of achieving a better balance in our lives. It presents all of us with the chance to reflect on what truly matters. To live in the moment and be present. To know that we can all do better. Locally, there aren't many places that are as beautiful as June Farms, our cover story on page 30. Take a trip this summer all the way to West Sand Lake. As you drive into the farm you will feel like you are somewhere far away. It is a true destination in our With love & gratitude,

Lighting TIPS For HEALTHY AGING
As we age, our need for enhanced lighting increases. Changes in eyesight include color distortion, an inability to focus as the lenses of the eye harden, and a sensitivity to glare. But it’s easy to address these changes with a little education and updated lighting. Here are 5 lighting tips for updating your home lighting to help aging eyes.
1
INCREASE AMBIENT LIGHT
With increased age, we need 2 to 5 times more ambient light. Ambient light is the overall light level of a room that allows you to move safely from point A to point B. A typical fixture for ambient light is a chandelier or flush mount ceiling light, which disperses light throughout the room. Check overhead lighting to see if the wattage of this fixture can be increased, for instance from 40W to 60W. Replacing old incandescent bulbs with LED bulbs allows you to increase the overall ambient light, while not increasing the electric bill. Remember never to exceed the recommended wattage of the fixture.
2
ADD SHADED LIGHTING
3
USE LIGHT CONTROLS
Increasing the level of ambient light is a good start, but it must be well-shaded to prevent glare. Consider adding shaded wall lights along a hallway or in darker corners. A quick and easy way to add more light is a table or floor lamp – as long as the cord is tucked away so it won’t cause falls. Select an opaque shade that sheds diffuse light, avoiding glare.
It’s a good idea to install motion sensors that automatically turn on lights when someone enters a room. Look for motion-activated lighting or prominent wall plates
10
with luminescent switches to make them easy to spot. If you’re installing new wall plates, remember to place them low enough to be managed by someone in a wheelchair. Motion sensitive lighting is especially helpful at night, when seniors are navigating from the bedroom to the bathroom and back.
4
INSTALL LED LIGHT STRIPS
5
DON’T FORGET THE OUTDOORS
LED tape lighting is an excellent tool for lighting stair treads, under bathroom counters or under kitchen cabinets. Stairways are one of the areas of the home where older folks are at risk for falling, so tread lighting focuses light and increases safety. Tape lighting in the kitchen provides focused light for cooking or eating, while LED strips in the bathroom – around the mirror, for instance – add extra light for grooming or shaving.
Remember to increase the light levels outdoors, too. All the same recommendations apply: increase ambient light, use shaded fixtures, increase wattage, add layers of light, and light stair treads. An added benefit of updated outdoor lighting is to discourage strangers from lurking in dark areas. With these changes, you and your family are ready to age gracefully and safely. Your best resource for help in selecting the home lighting products is Wolberg Electric Supply, staffed with professional lighting experts. They are trained to help you select the best lighting for any room, and save you time and expense. Call or stop by one of their three lighting showroom locations in Albany, Saratoga Springs or Kingston, New York. Visit www.wolberg.com for contact details and more great lighting tips.

ne of the joys of living in the Capital Region is being able to easily access the Adirondacks. The Adirondack Mountains are home to the largest protected area in the lower 48 of the United States. This area spans over six million acres and features over 100 local communities, mountains, lakes and verdant forests and valleys. The Adirondack Park is one of the most spectacular natural attractions in New York. Most notably it lies within a day’s drive of most of the northeast as well as Ontario and Quebec in Canada. Filled with breathtaking beauty and world class recreation, this area must be seen to be believed. The Adirondacks consist
12
of twelve distinct regional destinations each offering its own brand of adventure: from endless canoeing and kayaking in the Seven Lakes and Tupper Lake region to the extensive hiking trails of the High Peaks Wilderness in the Lake Placid area, one can discover places as diverse in geography as they are in activities and events. One can bicycle between wineries on the Adirondack Coast and dive to sunken shipwrecks in the Adirondack Seaway near the Canadian border. One of the most popular areas is Lake George with its many family attractions including the huge Six Flags amusement park. Lake George is nicknamed The Queen July-September 2020 / Summer
of American Lakes by its admirers. It is a long narrow lake that drains into much larger Lake Champlain to its north and ultimately into the St. Lawrence River. Historically Lake George was the site of conflicts between Britain and France and after a British win, a fort was built on the southern end of the lake. The French responded by building Fort Ticonderoga north on Lake Champlain. Lake George's position along the Montreal and New York water route made possession of the forts strategically important during the American Revolution. Lake George's location on the rail line between New York City and Montreal attracted the era’s rich and famous of the late 19th and early

20th Century. The Sagamore Hotel at Bolton Landing opened at this time and attracted many visitors. This hotel still welcomes guests and serves as a reminder of the Lake's early tourism days. Lake George remains a tourist destination. Another premier area is Lake Placid. This region gained world attention as the site of the 1932 and 1980 Winter Olympics. The 1980 games will be remembered forever because of the breathtaking victory of the US Hockey team over the favored Russian team. One can tour many of the Olympic venues and can even take a luge or bobsled ride on the tracks no matter the season. Visitors are struck by the awesome 70- and 90-meter ski jumps towering in the
Fort Ticonderoga
sky alongside the High Peaks. An elevator ride will whisk you to the top of the jump providing a bird’seye view of the region. One is also filled with admiration for the athletes who competed here. Another must visit site in the
park is the Adirondack Museum at Blue Mountain Lake. This is now known as The Adirondack Experience, featuring exhibitions in 24 galleries and historic buildings with topics ranging from logging to boating and offering

hands on activities. The New York Times called this museum one of America's finest outdoor museums and a must visit place in the Adirondack Park. There are more than 40,000 square feet of exhibitions , a lake-view cafe and a delightful museum store. Every effort has been made to make the entire site accessible to wheelchairs and walkers and electric scooters are available to rent. In the interest of maintaining public health, and to help contain Covid-19 the museum will reach out virtually in many ways. Each year 11,000 school children are provided with free programming in the classroom and on-site. This year they will be offered new opportunities for remote educational engagement with online lectures and workshops. Another great place to visit is The Wild Center at Tupper Lake. This offers one of the best family activities in the Park, offering interactive exhibits both inside and out, including watching otters swim. Learn why the Adirondack landscape is unique and trek through the enchanted forest to get a bird’s eye view from the Crow's Nest on the Wild Walk. The Wild Walk takes guests along trails and bridges that lead up to the top of the forest. Another highlight of the walk is the Spider Web. This is a large web that becomes a huge playground for the whole family. A unique feature of the

Adirondack Park are the many structures known as the Great Camps. These are grandiose family compounds consisting of huge main houses and cabins built in a rustic style in the latter half of the 19thC. These Great Camps are synonymous with the Gilded Age and names like Vanderbilt and Rockefeller. They were designed to blend in with the natural surroundings. These sprawling compounds spanned the most coveted lake shoreline, as well as some of the most remote from Raquette Lake to Upper Saranac. These camps could take days and weeks to get to. The glittering elite made the trek in the early summer along with their servants and stayed for the season. The Great Camp building boom spanned the years from the 1880's to the 1920's, yet the style remains popular to this day, spreading far outside the region. They were built with local labor and materials that embody the values of the Naturalist movement. Some of the camps are so remarkable they have
been designated National Historic Landmarks. Today many of the Great Camps remain in private hands while others offer professional or self-guided tours throughout the year. Several of the Camps are available for overnight stays. One of these is White Pine which was the summer White House of President Calvin Coolidge. It even features an indoor tennis court and bowling alley. Great Camp Sagamore, the summer home of Alfred Vanderbilt, offers artisan workshops along with boating and fishing on pristine Sagamore Lake. I have only been able to highlight a few of the reasons one must put the Adirondacks on any bucket list.. six million acres of “civilized wilderness is beckoning, filled with quaint towns and lakeside villages, this area is open year round for adventure. I urge you to take advantage of this magnificent treasure truly in our “backyard!" Begin planning your next travel adventure and discover the amazing recreation opportunities the Adirondacks have to offer.

The SIX
RULES For STRETCHING Properly
Stretching might seem like a straightforward activity. The right way to stretch can appear to be something that is obvious and easy to understand. However, in truth stretching is a little more complicated than you might think. Here are the six essential rules for stretching properly you should know.
3 1
Stretch regularly. No matter your fitness level, your muscles and joints are put under strain and stress every day. If you don't stretch regularly, your muscles will become steadily tighter. Your risk of eventually suffering injury will rise. A good rule of thumb is to stretch every major muscle group two or three times a week.
2
Use proper form. Every particular stretch has a proper form. Failing to imitate form means your stretching may do more harm than good, potentially resulting in injury. If you aren't sure how to properly target a particular muscle or perform a given stretch, try looking up a guide online. Consulting with a physical therapist or personal trainer is also a good idea.
Move slowly. Forcing your body into a stretch with harsh movements is a sure path to injury. Particularly harmful is the practice of working into a stretch by rocking back and forth, creating a bouncing motion. Bouncing causes muscles to tense up, rather than relax -the opposite of what stretching should do. Gradual, even, slow movements are the proper method.
4
Pay heed to pain. Stretching should feel good. While encountering resistance and a little soreness and discomfort can be a sign you are accomplishing something, outright pain is your body's way of telling you to stop. Be especially wary of sharp, sudden, or intense pain.
5
Don't stretch serious injuries. While stretching is good for relieving soreness and tightness, matters are different when the muscle is actually injured. A torn muscle needs rest to recover. Stretching is likely to slow recovery and can even exacerbate the injury. 55PlusLivingGuide.com
BY CARLTON RYAN
6
Warm up with dynamic stretching. There are two kinds of stretching: dynamic and static stretching. In static stretching, the body is held in place as the muscle is stretched as close to full range of motion as is comfortable. Dynamic stretching, in contrast, involves movement and places less intense demands on muscles. While worth doing at other times, static stretching before exercise can actually impair performance by stretching a muscle too far. Stretching is important to health and fitness, particularly as the body ages. Regular stretching serves to boost athletic performance and increase flexibility and range of motion. Stretching is also one of the best ways to relieve pain and soreness, and helps greatly to protect from injuries during exercise. Since improper stretching can, in contrast, actually increase risk of injury, getting stretching right is something you need to do.

PRESERVING a VACATION HOME or CAMP for Future Generations
BY DAVID A. KUBIKIAN, Esq.
When people own something of sentimental value, they are sometimes unsure of how to pass it down to their family for future generations to enjoy. This is especially the case with a vacation home or camp that has been in the family for years. Example: You own a beach or lake-front vacation home for years in a now sought-after area. You have seen your children (and grandchildren) grow up there and recall memories of watching sunsets over the water, roasting marshmallows over a campfire, and teaching the kids how to swim. It may be difficult to think that this home will be sold out of the family when you die and would like to preserve it for enjoyment of generations to come. • How can you best insure this property will be there for future generations to enjoy (and at times cohabitate), as your family tree grows or in future after your passing? • Who will be responsible for paying the Insurance? Taxes? Repairs? Maintenance? Fees? • Who decides which family members or friends use it and when? • What impact would future divorces or bankruptcies have on the property? 18
• How can you protect the property from a Medicaid spend down? While all of your children probably would like to inherit the property and enjoyed the vacation home growing up, some may no longer live in the area or use it on a regular basis. Other relatives may also like to use the property when it is not in use. If you leave the vacation property as part of your estate and divide it among the children, the risk is that some or the majority of siblings may want to sell it. Some of your children may not want to pay to maintain an asset they rarely use. Those that do want to keep it may not be able to afford to buy the others out. I t can also create sibling squabbles when it comes to its use, cost of repairs or allowing non-family members use the property.
To alleviate your concerns, there are a number of Estate Planning options you should consider for the transfer and management of a vacation property. July-September 2020 / Summer
Transferring a Vacation Home to the Next Generation You can always transfer the property to one of more children during your lifetime, or leave it as a bequest upon your death. However, this “direct” or outright gifting strategy comes with many risks and potential tax implications. Since no one can predict the future, your family’s vacation home may become a part of future divorce proceedings, bankruptcy, lawsuit or probate. Without proper planning, a vacation home may need to be sold to pay for long-term care costs. The asset may now also be counted for purposes of college financial aid. Worse yet, due to second marriages or death, the house may be inadvertently inherited by in-laws and not stay in the family. The situation may become more complicated if the property is located in a different state or foreign country. There may be a better legal solution that might work for your family. Several options include: • Co-ownership. Ownership among family members could include being tenants in common or joint tenants with rights of survivorship. Risks above may still apply, especially if siblings do not get along. • A Trust. You, the grantor, set up a trust and appoint a trustee to carry out your wishes. Your children (and possibly grandchildren) play a fairly passive role while you are alive. Decisions about the property come from you. The trust would have to be funded with enough assets to pay expenses. With the property held in trust, it may be sheltered from future divorces, an unforeseen bankruptcy, a child who needs public benefits, becomes disabled or in case of their unfortunate death, while simultaneously keeping strategic tax benefits. After your death, the property could continue to be managed within the trust. • A Limited Liability Company (LLC). The LLC can own the home and would be managed by its members (the beneficiaries – ie. your children) or an independent property manager. The rights and responsibilities of the members are spelled out in the LLC operating agreement. An LLC can contain specific provisions on the use of the property, sharing of costs, and the transfer, inheritance or selling of member interests. An LLC helps centralize the man

agement function for the property. Any structure for a vacation property should account for the possibility that eventually, the family may no longer want to own the property, it has become cost prohibitive, or receive an offer that they can’t refuse. Whether it be a modest cabin in the Adirondacks, a beach house along the Jersey shore, a condo in Florida, or a ski chalet in the Swiss Alps, a plan needs to be in place.
10 Questions to Consider
1
Do family members get along and want to keep the vacation property in the family? If no one is interested in keeping the property, it could simply be sold after your death.
2
How should siblings pay for regular maintenance and expenses of the property? Should there be a property manager or will each person pitch in to help with routine and emergency repairs, cleaning, yard work, winter storage, etc.? How are real estate taxes, insurance and utilities paid for? What about remodeling or improving the home or other structures on the property?
How will disputes be handled among family members? Sometimes conflicts arise on the use of the property or if someone doesn’t contribute their share as agreed upon. Arbitration may help resolve some conflicts.
4
How will time at the vacation home be scheduled? Often, summer months or school vacations can be particular popular times for its use. Will families stay together (space permitting) or will each sibling get a certain number of weeks? Is scheduling time first-come, first-served, rotational or do families “draw straws” for popular times? Will other family members or friends be allowed to use unused times?
5
Can the home be rented to non-family members to help pay for the expenses? Are there tax, insurance, or liability implications in doing so?
6
What if one sibling wants to sell or cannot afford to pay his or her share of the expenses? Can the others buy him or her out? Can one family member force the sale of the home? Keep in mind that family dynamics can change and life circumstances happen (job loss, divorce, death, disability, bankruptcy or even fights among relatives).

What will happen in the case of a death of one of the family members? How will his or her share of the property be transferred? The share of the property could be transferred to the surviving spouse, grandchildren or split among the remaining siblings.
8
Will the property arrangement (trust, LLC, joint ownership, etc.) provide any asset protection in case of financial problems or government benefits (such as disability or Medicaid)?

If the property is sold, how will the cotents of the home, watercraft and other equipment be divided? Often, there are sentimental items that have been in the family for years that may need to be addressed. Will the sale trigger any federal and state estate tax or capital gains tax implications?

Up CALL BY PETER CROMWELL
Covid-19 has had a huge impact on our daily lives. People struggle to make up for lost income, the economy is hurting, and and infection rates are increasing daily in many states across the U.S. Through it all, though, there might be a silver lining to this crisis. While restrictions are easing up in many states, it goes without saying that people are not traveling much. As of April, air travel was down by 95%. In fact, early on in this pandemic, around 2 billion people in the world were on "lockdown." Activity outside the home was and still is greatly reduced, and we're seeing a strange thing happen as a result: Mother Nature is moving in to fill the gaps left.
As humans stayed home... nature returned Pictures shared on social media have given first-hand accounts of this in action. For example, in Punjab, India, thanks to a decline in air pollution from factories and cars, people can clearly see the Himalayas, from a distance of 120 miles, for the first time in 30 years. In Venice, Italy, dolphins have been seen in the canals as far fewer boats are out on the water. In the United States, the Environmental Protection Agency rated Los Angeles's air quality as "good" for the first time since 1995; blue skies have returned to L.A. We don't want to downplay the human cost of Covid-19; the coronavirus pandemic has been terrible. If we can get one positive thing out of it, though, it's that our response to it has shown that people can work together and, actually, we can make changes to the environment. Most people agree that
changing their normal behavior - for example, by staying at home - is a good idea to help get us through the pandemic as smoothly as possible. As a result, some have wondered why we can't make an effort, together, to allow our planet's environment a chance to heal.
The Connection Between Human Activity and the Spread of Coronavirus It's interesting to realize that there's a connection between environmental damage and the spread of the virus. For example, pollution can make peoples' lungs weaker and more susceptible to these kinds of diseases. We see that environmental health and human health are connected in more ways than one global health is human health. According to Forbes, it's possible that the reduced air pollution in many areas of China has saved around 77,000 lives. This is borne out by actual statistics: in preparation for the 2008 Olympics in Beijing, the Chinese government cleaned the air around the capital, and infant and

elderly mortality rates sharply declined. Taking care of the environment is beneficial to everyone in both the short- and long-term. Besides the current virus, there's a direct link between pollution and overall health: according to the World Health Organization around 3 million people die each year from conditions related to air pollution. Air pollution and health play off of each other, for example leading to diabetes and heart disease so that, when a global pandemic strikes, people who live in areas more susceptible to pollution are more likely to be infected or die.
A Model for Climate Change Many people have compared and contrasted the response to coronavirus and the response to climate change. Both are pandemics of different types Covid-19 is a global health problem, whereas climate change is a global health problem, if you'll forgive the pun. In spite of the idea that it will be impossible to change human behavior on the scale necessary to reduce the progression of climate change, observers

have noticed, the global response to coronavirus has shown that it is actually possible According to scientists, climate change is, like coronavirus, an immediate problem. What if we were to treat climate change in the same way in which we have treated this virus? Just as almost everyone around the world has gotten on board with taking steps to lessen the effects of the virus - which has, by the way, reduced air pollutants by as much as 40 % in Europe and Asia - they could get on board with taking steps to reduce the effects of climate change. It's no longer hard to imagine a society where jobs, transportation industries, and regular people cooperate to mitigate a public health crisis, and climate change is, of course, the granddaddy of all public health crises. One problem, though, is that the existence of climate change is not as obvious to people as the existence of coronavirus is: it takes living on a remote island to notice the rise in sea levels, or the use of scientific instruments to measure long-term changes in temperature.
What if we were to treat climate change in the same way in which we have treated this virus? Not only does our response to coronavirus show that we can work together to make positive changes, but it shows we can work together to make the right changes. The primary culprit of climate change is, of course, the greenhouse gases. NASA satellites recorded a decrease in 30 % of nitrogen dioxide one of the most damaging and widespread of the greenhouse gases - in China back in January. This shows that change can take place rapidly, even within a month or two, which begs the question of why emissions reduction targets are usually planning a reduction over a decade or two - we can make a change within a few months. In a way that none of us could have imagined, the coronavirus pandemic has served as a wake-up call in more ways than one. Maybe the planet is letting us know that, if we work together, we can cause change.

Popsicles HOW to MAKE
Popsicles are an incredibly versatile food, and very easy to make. Popsicles are timeless. We’re never too young or old for one. They bring out the childlike quality in all of us no matter what your age. They are basically a smoothie that you freeze into popsicle molds. They keep well and can be pulled out whenever you, or your kids, need a little snack. This makes them a great convenience in the summer months when schedules and meal plans often get pushed aside to accommodate more relaxed days. Homemade popsicles can be made with whatever you have in your fridge. Keep reading for several different ways you can make this wonderful food and enjoy a refreshing snack whenever you want.
FRUITY POPSICLES
When making a fruity popsicle, you really have endless options. You can keep it simple with just a couple different fruits, or you can add an entire fruit salad to your blender and get a more complex flavor. Try 1 Banana with a cup of strawberries (frozen or fresh) and a half cup of orange juice. If you're up for it, add a handful of shredded carrots to the mix. If your blender needs some help mixing this up, add a little water (or juice or milk) until the ingredients are mixed well. 28
July-September 2020 / Summer
For a different approach, try a half cup each of pineapple, mango, strawberries, blueberries, and cherries, with a handful of spinach. Sometimes a fruity popsicle is especially fun if it isn't completely smooth, but has small chunks of fruit inside. After you blend your popsicle ingredients, drop in a few strawberries or blueberries or chopped up bananas. This will give the popsicle an extra fun twist and make it visually more appealing. Remember that blending citrus with dark berries will likely give you dark purple popsicles. If you want to stick to a lighter colored popsicle, make sure your ingredients are mostly the same, yellow and orange colors.
“ICE CREAM” POPSICLES
For a more decadent popsicle, try two tablespoons of peanut butter (or your nut/seed butter of choice) with one banana, one tablespoon of cocoa powder, and one to two cups of almond milk (or other milk of your choice). To this popsicle, you may want to add honey or some soaked dates for an extra sweet option. This kind of popsicle lends itself well to chocolate or vanilla flavored protein powder. Frozen bananas blended with a little milk yield a wonderfully creamy, ice-cream texture. This
type of popsicle can be tricky to get blended all together, so you may need a food processor. You can keep it bananaflavored, or stir in coconut shavings, or chopped strawberries, or drizzle a little honey through it.
ADD-INS
With any popsicle, as with any smoothie, you can always add greens or protein powder or chia seeds, hemp seeds, or flax meal. These ingredients will give your popsicles a nutritional boost and help you stay full longer. While fruit-only popsicles are delicious and healthy, they are mostly sugar, so depending on your dietary needs, you may need to add some other things.
For healthy fat and a natural thickening ingredient, add flax meal. It doesn't taste like much, and a little bit will go a long way. For a protein boost, find a protein powder you like. Make small batches first because some protein powder can significantly change the texture of a popsicle. Adding yogurt is another way to add protein (especially Greek yogurt), and this will also add gut-healthy probiotics to your popsicle. Yogurt can make a popsicle a little tart, so as with protein powder, try a small batch first. Popsicles are such a wonderful way to stay healthy and full during summer months. Just blend up what sounds good to you, and likely it will yield a summer staple to your kitchen. Remember that vegetables like spinach and shredded carrots go well-hidden inside a popsicle, so they are always a great addition to your recipe.

June Farms is located in West
Sand Lake, NY, but if you didn’t know it, you might think you were on a vineyard in Napa Valley. The beautiful setting is a credit to Matt Baumgartner’s hard work, imagination and vision. “Coming out here and seeing animals is really calming and brings joy to people,” he said. Baumgartner’s idea for the farm came from childhood visits to his grandmother’s home as a child. She lived in an upstate New York town surrounded by dairy farms and he loved exploring the neighboring farms and being around the cows. After successfully running several local restaurants, he found himself spending too many hours indoors. He missed animals and having his hands in the dirt. So he decided to return to his childhood dreams and create a farm he could enjoy and share with others. That dream is June Farms. The farm consists of a variety of buildings designed for different uses. The main structure is the Pony Barn, a beautifully crafted post-and-beam barn decorated with Baumgartner’s attention to detail. From May through December, the Pony Barn is open for visitors to enjoy a craft beer, fine wine or a specialty cocktail from an impressive drinks list that includes both old favorites and new twists. In the age of social distancing, gatherings at the farm are perfect for hot, summer nights. An outdoor kitchen and pizza oven offers plenty of dining options, from simple finger foods, to burgers and pizzas featuring fresh ingredients from the farm. The view from the outdoor patio is breathtaking — a must see as the sun sets. Upon visiting this spot for the first time Matt remembers, “It was really a beautiful night, I immediately fell in love and put an offer in that night.” 32

Farm tours and enchanting getaways Farm tours are one of the many highlights of a June Farms visit. The farm is open daily to visitors of all ages and at night to adults only. Whether you choose to walk the farm or rent a limo style golf cart to get around, it’s an adventure worth taking. Tours led by friendly, knowledgeable guides are available Tuesday through Saturday from 4-8 p.m. On your tour expect to see Shire Horses, Scottish Highland Cattle, pigs, ducks, chickens, goats and bees. “Part of the experience here is coming and seeing animals you typically do not see that often,” said Baumgartner, noting that you might also see June Farms’ two barn cats or his black lab, Frank. Other attractions include relaxing and quirky Goat Yoga classes, and the June Farms Scavenger Hunt, a fun diversion as you tour the farm. Check out the June Farms’ website at junefarms.com for the latest list of events. Whatever you choose, you’re sure to have a phone full of great photos to remember your visit. If you want to spend more time at June Farms, it offers four unique ways to spend a night or two away from home. The Lodge at June Farms is a luxury cabin featuring a gorgeous king-sized bed on giant timbers, a stone fireplace and full kitchen and bath. The screened-in porch overlooks the farm, and allows you to enjoy the outdoors insect free. Anytime of year is the right time to book this space. The Stone House is a studio-style space attached to the Pony Barn with a king bed, kitchen and full bathroom — the perfect one-night getaway. If you’re feeling a bit more adventurous, TimberTown offers three cabins set in a pine grove with a hammock and fire pit. It allows you to rough it without really roughing it. Get your friends together, rent this space for the weekend and pretend it’s a sleep-away camp. If that’s not your style, check out the completely refurbished Airstream at June Farms, complete with deck, hot tub and fire pit for your enjoyment. You’ve never stayed in a camper like this. A teepee is in the works too. All of these amazing places are available through Airbnb. Best of all, June Farms is less than 30 minutes from downtown Albany and Troy meaning you can get away without really leaving home. At June Farms, the opportunities are endless for outdoor enjoyment. So, for your next walk, outing or staycation, consider June Farms. Your soul will be glad you did. 55pluslivingguide.com 33

paving the way for a positive, progressive future of aging There is no one size that fits all. Everyone as they age has a unique set of needs and challenges. Aging Consultants recognizes that later life transitions can be challenging, so we partner with our seniors, their family, and the community to alleviate those challenges. We develop non-medical person-centered plans including concierge services, later-life planning, and companionship for explor-ing new things. A snapshot from our family of clients: MARY J., a recent widow, was a care-giver for her husband Ralph who recently passed after battling cancer for seven years. She was looking for help to navigate the social aspects of her life. We worked with her to help her get involved in her local senior center where she was able to participate in yoga classes, sign up for an art class and enjoyed meeting new friends. JOHNATHAN P. lives out of state and had concerns about his father’s decline in health after a recent hospitalization. He asked us to attend the care plan meeting when his father was in the hospital, to help come up with a plan that would help facilitate independence for his father’s transition back home. TOM R. reached out to us after suffering a stroke in 2014, to help him coordinate lawncare, housekeeping and meal preparation. After a few years, Tom decided he would take a leap of faith and move into a retirement community. We helped to educate Tom about his options, joining him during the tours and assisted him with the transition into the community
KAREN W. reached out to help her to get involved in the community. Karen is new to the Capital District, relocating here to live closer to her family. Karen explained that her move has made her a little isolated, even though she has family near they work, and she finds herself without a purpose during the day when they are at work. As a retired Director for a nonprofit organization she was aware of the value of volunteerism and had a desire to give back to her new community. We discussed her interests and she now volunteer at the local library, hosting a story hour for children and shelving books to assist the staff. dsmith@aging-consultants.com aging-consultants.com • (518) 364-1047 55pluslivingguide.com 35

Living the
life BY JACKIE FULBRIGHT
Q. Why did you choose to live in an RV? A. My husband, Eric & I began talking about the RV lifestyle in 1995 when we first started camping. Q. How did you transition from traditional homeownership to one on the road? Did you start with a pop up and slowly graduate to the full blown RV lifestyle? A. Like many campers our first camper was a pop up, however, short lived. The first time I spent the night in our pop up and had to hike to the bathhouse I was finished with that! Within a couple of months we traded for a travel trailer (pull behind) with a bunkhouse and no slide outs, only to realize that with no slide outs and Eric being 6’4 we quickly realized we were going to need the extra room so we ordered another travel trailer with 2 slides for the room. Slide outs give you more room in areas that

can otherwise feel cramped, such as galley kitchens and master bedrooms. The extra space that slide outs provide is something to consider if you plan on spending most of the year traveling in your RV vs using your RV primarily as a summer camper. Q. How did you know what type of RV to choose? A. It was merely trial & error, until you RV for some time you really don’t know what works best for your situation. Once we camped in the travel trailer for awhile we decided we needed a motorhome for even more room. Q. Do you ever get tired of living on the road, in a small place? A. We have been on the road with no house since 2006. 14 years is a long time but we have met so many new friends along the way that it has gone by fast. As far as the small space,we have everything we need and live a very simple life. We had a beautiful home but it was only stuff and when we’re gone we can’t take it with us so we felt that we really didn’t need all the stuff. Q. What kind of downsizing did you need to do before you set forth on this new lifestyle? A. Honestly, not that much. When we decided to go on the road, we put our house on the market and within a couple of weeks the house sold and the couple
that bought it also bought all the furniture and rugs so all we had to remove was our personal belongings and clothes and off we went.. Q. Do you primarily stay in RV parks? How much does overnight RV parking typically cost? A. Yes, always in RV parks. They are the safest places to stay and you meet the nicest fellow Rv’ers there. Cost varies from $35.00 a night to $100.00 a night depending on location. Camping isn’t cheap, it’s a lifestyle. Q. Do you map out your year and where you will travel too or is it more spontaneous? A. We plan a year in advance because some of the areas we enjoy are quite popular and book out a year, such as Bar Harbor Maine in the summer. Q. How long do you typically stay in one place? A. Usually 2 weeks but we stay in Myrtle Beach longer certain times of the year and Bar Harbor from mid-July to after labor day. Q. What does a typical day look like? A. Like I said we live a simple life so we do similar things that everyone does. We enjoy the area we are visiting, run errands, do shopping and we love to visit local mom & pop restaurants. We want to support small local businesses and eat where the locals eat. Q. Is health insurance difficult to get living the RV life? A. Not difficult to get but can be very expensive, although now we are both on medicare with supplements so it’s much better now. Q. What's your favorite place/trip that you've been to or taken? A. We love Bar Harbor Maine which is why we stay so long there. There’s so much to do and see with Acadia National Park so beautiful and the area’s climate so comfortable we just really enjoy it there. Q. How do you stay in shape while on the road? A. The RV resorts, parks and campgrounds are a great place to get out to walk and meet others along the way, plus some have exercise facilities as well. Q. What about pets? A. We traveled for 12 years with our Yorkie, Bo. He passed away a few years ago, but most RV’ers travel because of their pets! The parks have great dog walks and understand that most every RV’er has pets with them.

Sangria
SUMMER SAYS
BY ROD MICHAEL
It was 1964 and the United States got its first real introduction to Sangria at the World’s Fair in New York. Its humble roots started in Spain and today it is served in every establishment with their own spin on it. It is without question Spain’s most popular drink. It is served chilled and goes with just about anything. In my own words, “this is so good, it even goes with bad conversation.” Sangria means bloodletting and can be traced back to the 18th century. I had my first run in with it in 1971 and since then we as a family, have been coming up with our own summer blends. It fits just about any occasion and makes everyone a lover. Who does not like a little wine with fruit and possibly other spirits mixed in? The main ingredient is wine. Until modern times, water was not always safe to drink. People would bathe in it and even wash their horses in it. The only 46
safe liquid had to have some alcohol in it. Do not forget that Spain is known for its vineyards dating to 200 BC and most households made some wine from fruits, grapes, or berries. It was easy to liven things up by adding some fruits and other ingredients to give something a different flavor. Sangria got it name from the locals, perhaps by watching the red juice flow out of the grapes when they were squeezed, hence “Bloodletting”. Sangria is traditionally a red wine punch. The red version is typically made with a Tempraneillo grape from the Rioja Region. It can also be made with white wines or even Roses. The white version is called Sangria Blanco. In the south of Spain Sangria is typically called zurra and is created with peach or nectarine. If you want, you can even use a sparkling wine to make a nice bubbly version. Typically, this beverage is made from red wine,
July-September 2020 / Summer
fruit juices, soda water, fruit and sometimes brandy. The beauty of this, you can do whatever strikes your palate and make it yours. Chill your wine overnight, add fruit let it get happy, and mix in a traditional Sangria pitcher. It is worth buying a pitcher, that you will use throughout the summer, plus it also prevents all the fruit from flying into your wine glass. Do take some fruit out of the pitcher and add to your glass to create a lovely piece of artwork. When choosing a wine glass, try one that can hold your drink and fruit. You will become the mixologist, be sure to think about what fruits will go with a red wine and ones that will go with a white wine. We are using local fruits, so think peaches, nectarines, berries, apples, pears, pineapples, limes, and orange slices. I like tossing in a little Vodka, gin, a flavored liquor and some simple syrup to finish it off. Making sangria should be fun, so please smile and taste as you proceed. The red version will take a splash or two of brandy or whatever you think might make it taste better. Try to make this a day ahead so all the flavors get to meld, and you get a second chance to tweak the blend. Do experiment with different fruits and see what tastes you can come up with, all will taste good, some just a little better to your taste buds. When did ELDERS become "the elderly?"
M
BY WILLARD WASHBURN
any of us have buried parents, family and friends. We celebrate 40th or 50th high school reunions and mourn the loss of classmates we didn’t even know were gone. We approach an age when thoughts of mortality are also about our own. There are psychologists who have identified death as our biggest fear and underlying unconscious causal factor of many behaviors throughout our lives. We devote unfathomable resources and money to keeping people alive. There are medical protocols to insure health service providers do everything they can to keep us alive, unless we have made legal provisions otherwise. Keeping people alive beyond when it is time to depart is for another discussion and not to be twisted into a justification to not provide safety and effective medical and personal care to elders. The Covid-19 pandemic has certainly illuminated many important matters, especially about ourselves, society, the nation and the world and yes, potentially the opportunity to see how all of life on the planet is interrelated

and interdependent. The coronavirus effects expose the disparities in our society, including people who are in extended care facilities or elders in general. Notice the shift in language. Language matters because it conveys our values. We have the choice to see those who are growing older in “new” ways that are old ways for many who gathered around elders to listen and learn from them as they grew-up with their presence and tutelage. This difference is a way of life for Native Americans. As we grow older we physically degenerate, no matter how devoted we may be to exercise. The mind is not immune to the aging process, yet, we continue “to see” from where we have been in relation to what is happening around us. I learned as much from my mother’s grace when she suffered from dementia as I did growing-up with her and my father’s love & encouragement. Besides, just being together is what matters most. Why do we need to know what day it is when we are together or what we talked about last time? So we meet someone again that we knew before. Or reacquaint by reconstructing the relationship. Enjoy telling or hearing the story again. Is it our own fears about ourselves that compel us to bring elders into our world rather than 52
My hope will remain with our younger people and how they can “learn something” from the wisdom of elders in the many forms it may take, as we also learn from them.
understanding and continuing to relate and learn from theirs? The “Aging & Saging” phenomenon speaks to how we continue to learn, including how to live with growing older. That is different, as we may remind millennial sons & daughters, than referring to us as “old”. So when did elders become “the elderly”? I’m sure there are those with more expertise to offer perspective on its origins and history, but it certainly seems evident in modern day perspectives of Western originated societies. Sadly, it parallels how the “disadvantaged” perspective became the dominate educational paradigm and policy that contributed indelibly to the “other” language, phenomenon, and reference to people who are different from “what counts” in society and history. While perhaps not intended, disempowerment becomes the effect for far too many people, including elders. Yet, what was it we said to our children at times or in thought about people not being smart and safe during the pandemic? “You know better.” And elders do, often by example. My wife and dear partner in life reminds us there are fewer days ahead of us than are behind us. We like to think July-September 2020 / Summer

Free Books and Magazines in Audio or Braille there is a depth and lightness to our being, kinda like the glow of a beautiful sunset at the end of the gift of another day. Like life, beauty can take on such meaning as we grow older. I am a hopeful realist about any and all that I share. My hope will remain with our younger people and how they can “learn something from the wisdom of elders in the many forms it may take, as we also learn from them. Lastly, perhaps with some wisdom I may offer, the multifaceted aspects of loss inherent in the question posed is perhaps one of the greatest opportunities to learn and alter how we see and value each other, other forms of life, and the earth itself. Educational and human possibilities emerge in the dynamic of human experience. The collective future of our species depends on it.

CAMPFIRES
There is nothing as captivating and comforting as the crackle, flames and warmth of a campfire.
I
am easily transported to those days gone by and reminded just how quickly time passes. Nights sitting around a fire at Boy Scout camp learning how to build a fire with my friends. Nights sitting with my friends, who I grew up with, in someone’s backyard keeping the neighbors awake. Nights at our camp overlooking the lake discussing life with my children and their friends. These nights have prepared me for the new memories I will make around the fire this summer. I feel that life goes into slow motion as I sit and gaze into the warming glow and beauty. So many times I have sat before this flickering of flames and shared wonderful moments with family and friends. A campfire is a moment in time where we gather to connect. Staring into the captivating fire’s flames,
58
there is an opportunity to find your spirit. Fire is a magical and mysterious element. As we sit together warming our souls, we can steal a glance into the star laden heavens and come right back to earth into the comfort of it’s hold. It is the soul enriching campfire that enables us to tell and listen to those stories that make life so beautiful and wonderful. No matter our station in life, before the fire we are all one. Staring dreamily into its warmth and light, campfires reassure us that there is hope. All are welcome. So, may the campfire open your heart and your mind, put a smile on your face and enable you to dream the dreams that only you can make come true and maybe you can even sneak in an extra s’more!
