P R I M A RY C A R E CLINIC FSU SCHOOL OF MEDICINE

In an effort to provide medical care to an underserved population, the Florida State University School of Medicine has proposed a Primary Care Clinic. Located in a low income district of Tallahassee, the clinic provides urgent care services, behavioral health, preventative health services and family medicine practices. A key element of the design is the patient and physician pathways. These are designed separately in order to provide privacy as well as streamline travel distances for both patients and providers.

design intent Inspired by a canyon, the space harnesses energy and chaos and guides users fluidly to a calmer, healthier state. The constant movement and change is harnessed in the adapting yet strong geology of the canyon walls. There are many sectors and views in healthcare, but all are driven by the need for wellbeing for all people. This drives the design for the FSU clinic. With a strong structure of wayfinding inspired by a canyon, patients and providers alike feel supported and guided towards healing. Separate pathways support care providers by allowing for internal exit and entry into exam rooms which enhances privacy. Patients are aided through corridors with ceiling features inspired by the form of a canyon.

R E C R E AT I O N + E N R I C H M E N T CENTER As big box stores such as Toys R Us close, the existing spaces are left vacant. This “Big Box Blight created the opportunity to address a local issue in the Tallahassee community. Currently, the city lacks a recreation center for all ages that would provide health oriented programs and an open community space. Designed with partner, Hayleigh Englehardt, the space adopts a modern design aimed to promote a change to a more health conscious community. With classrooms, spin studio, basketball court, climbing wall, and open fitness center with floating track, every age is accomodated and welcomed.

Inspired by Abstract Regionalism, the design will both integrate and celebrate the local Tallahassee community while introducing modern and minimalist design to inspire wellness. Abstracting traditional linear design into curved and playful forms, provokes imagination and creativity in youth while giving the community a refreshing and modern design to spark change. Interior spaces such as a central community room and teaching kitchen will bring generations together to learn healthy habits. Open gym and play spaces will accommodate both youth and caregivers to socially interact and cultivate an active community. Tallahassee is a historic city with a need for a fresh space to connect the community to modern health and wellness.

In order to promote intergenerational interaction, the play area provides ample space for all users to socialize and connect. Caregivers are ensured of their child’s safety through maintaining supervision, while allowing kids to creatively play. The minimal design of the play structure encourages imaginative play, and socialization between youth. The climbing wall adds excitement to the space as well as an alternative activity for older children. With access to the track and gym above, caregivers have the opportunity to better their personal health while also remaining in touch with their child. Following the concept of abstract regionalism, forms are minimal and modern, while providing the Tallahassee community a place for engagement, that currently is not available to the local community.

As modern workplace design shifts to adopt the open office over traditional closed cubicles and offices, companies are challenged to support employees in this shift. Providing spaces like phone booths and break out meeting spaces allow for privacy and flexibility in the open office. Mobile drawers with personal storage and seats along with individually controlled lighting and sit-to-stand desks allow for user control and promote a sense of belonging. Large windows along the facade bring in natural daylighting, enhancing the user’s experience and happiness.

KEURIG DR. PEPPER C O R P O R AT E H E A D Q UA R T E R S

As Keurig and Dr. Pepper become a joined company, the need for a new office to support the merge is critical to their future success and growth. Located in Frisco, Texas, the KDP headquarters has tenant spaces on the top 5 floors. Through an internship with Corgan Inc. in Dallas, Texas, I joined the KDP team from concept ideation through construction documentation. Each team member conquered various spaces; mine was the beverage bars (featured here). These provided an open break room and flexible workspace for employees in a casual setting. Each floor features a “beverage bar with a connecting staircase that integrates bench seating and an understair niche to maximize use of the understair space.

internship experience Between my junior and senior years, I spent a summer living in Dallas Texas working as an Interior Design Intern for Corgan. I was exposed to large commercial projects and was specifically given the opportunity to work on the Keurig Dr Pepper design team. I gained experience contributing to design development through construction documentation. I also learned how large commercial firms operate and how the various team players communicate with each otherand with the client.

MOOD BOARDS

Utilizing handsketching, I was able to communicate my ideas for the design of the custom connecting staircase that would be located on all 5 floors of the office. After many renditions, the final design adopted the version that includes an understair niche and surrounding bench seating (shown to the right).

PURE BEAUTY GROCERS INC.

Many beauty companies are seeking grocery stores to sell their products without losing the consumer experience. In an effort to increase success of personal product sales within a grocery store, Pure Beauty aims to create a unique experience that promotes plant-based, organic beauty while seamlessly integrating into the grocery aisle. A green house “roof feature visually separates from the grocery experience to a beauty consumer space. Connecting the space to its surroundings however, are herb grow boxes located on the tops of the shelves.

LIGHTING DESIGN

Golden Lighting, a national lighting fixture design company, with their headquarters in Tallahassee, Florida partnered with students at Florida State University for a design competition. As a part of the Lighting Fundamentals class, all students were tasked with designing a fixture that would house a single LED strip. Using an atomic mass as the concept, I designed the light fixture to be multi-dimensional and fluid. From every angle, the fixture appears different, creating multiple focal points from anywhere in the room. Like an atomic mass, the fixture radiates energy in all directions, allowing for an even distribution of light that fills the room. Using Revit modeling, I was able to bring my vision for the complex yet sleek fixture to life. Overall, I gained skills in lighting design such as understanding lumens and CRI, as well as the electrical complexities that lighting designers face. My design was showcased in the Golden Lighting showroom in the Dallas Trade Mart summer of 2019.

Skills in detailed drawing, and construction documentation came from both coursework in “Construction Systems” and “Construction Documents” as well as during my internship with Corgan. In Construction Systems, we were tasked with completing detailed drawings by hand. I also learned the basics of building systems. From the framing and structure of the building through plumbing, HVAC and electrical systems. Consruction Documents then gave me the opportunity to apply my knowledge through completing a sheet set for the construction of a new office building in Tallahassee, Florida. This set included finish plans, reflected ceiling plans, power and data plans, sections and elevation and detailed ADA restroom design. This enhanced my competancy in Revit in drawing various systems, millwork details and wall types.
