FILM & LECTURES National Trust lecture NEWS FROM KNOLE Monday 14 March Recital Room

7.30pm Tickets £12.50 (£10 concessions) Death of a Gentleman is a documentary about international cricket. Written and directed by Sam Collins, Johnny Blank and Jarrod Kimber, the demise to which they refer is the death of a glorious game played at the highest level which is organised in a transparent way, freely and openly available to men and women worldwide. Test cricket, they argue, is becoming a corrupt closed shop for England, Australia and India; the rest of the cricketing world is being wilfully left behind, crying, ‘It’s simply not cricket!’

Julian Munby, Oxford Archaeology The appearance of the coach in the mid-16th century was a social innovation with widespread consequences. Although there were at first few technological changes from medieval carriages, the new opportunities for display of the highly decorated coach bodies were exploited by the crown and aristocracy. Important travellers arriving at Dover might find themselves being taken to London by coach, while the ownership of a coach was a status symbol that soon became widespread. A remarkable gift of a coach from the London Muscovy company was taken in 1603 from Gravesend to Moscow as a present for Boris Godunov, and survives today in the Kremlin Armoury Museum. As a superb example of Jacobean craftsmanship, its highly decorated body has elements that can be compared with work at Knole. www.thespacesevenoaks.co.uk/whats-on

The Sevenoaks School Symphony Orchestra presents a concert of music from the 19th century. The first half opens with Rossini’s witty overture to the opera The Italian Girl in Algiers. Lou Warnett and Rachelle Lam share the stage in a performance of Beethoven’s 4th piano concerto. The leading string players open the second half with Mendelssohn’s beautiful 9th String Symphony in C before being joined by a massed woodwind, brass and percussion section for a performance of the ballet music from Gounod’s opera Faust to end proceedings.

This concert opens with Prokofiev’s short but charming classical symphony (Symphony No.1 in D major) and also features the triple concerto for violin, cello and piano by Beethoven with three amazing soloists. Mozart’s imposing Don Giovanni overture starts the second half which concludes with Brahms’s Serenade no.1 for Orchestra, written when he was just 25 years old.

Sevenoaks School Certificate Drama & Theatre Arts Assessments TRANSFORMATIONS FESTIVAL New plays from Sennockians Tuesday 8 and Wednesday 9 March Ordovsky-Tanaevsky Drama Studio See website for times Admission FREE Year 11 Drama Students at Sevenoaks School present a minifestival of their Devised Public Productions: a key assessment for the Sevenoaks School Certificate Year 11 public exam course. Three sets will each present an original one-act play devised, written and produced by the students themselves. The performances are a product of an extensive period of research, exploration and rehearsal – in and out of lessons. As with the inaugural festival last year, expect to be thrilled by the skill, creativity, commitment and passion that go into each production. Last year’s plays included Maggot Moon, Sailing into Darkness and Hide and Seek. This year’s plays are connected by an exploration of the family, including specific focus on freedom, divorce and the search for grandchildren stolen by the Argentinian Junta.

Lisa Jones is on a journey. It’s a colourful and exciting off-kilter trip in search of one lost hour that has tipped the balance of her life. The inhabitants of the wonderful world she finds herself in – Dissocia – are a curious blend of the funny, the friendly and the brutal. Produced originally for the 2004 Edinburgh International Festival, The Wonderful World of Dissocia wowed critics and audiences alike, cleaning up at the Critics’ Awards for Theatre in Scotland. This original play, both magical and moving, confirmed Anthony Neilson as one of the major voices in contemporary British theatre. ‘Bubbling with inventiveness that is distinctly its own.’ Telegraph.

Duration: approximately 1 hour each.

An exciting interpretation of Coleridge’s famous poem combining atmospheric sounds with physical imagery and text. Part live radio drama, part-theatre, the company will explore abstract voices and music to transform a wedding reception into the Mariner’s haunting story.

NORSE! Long Ships, Tall Stories. Come on a journey through the nine worlds of Norse Mythology. See what happens when Odin and the gods of Asgard rebrand themselves. Sevenoaks School Theatre Company’s Middle and Lower School Production tackles the questions the Vikings couldn’t handle: who stole Thor’s hammer? Is Springsteen a rock giant?
