What are the SDGs? The SDGs are a set of goals and targets aimed at making the world a better place. People everywhere face significant social, economic, environmental and political challenges at both a local and a global level. However, there is hope for the future. All the member states of the United Nations (UN) have committed to 17 goals, which, if achieved, will make the world’s environments, economies and societies significantly better by 2030.

improving the quality of
education for all children, achieving gender equality and taking action to protect the climate and environment in partnership with World organizations. These goals apply to all people, young and old, and in every one of the 193 countries that signed up to them in 2015. ď ś THE 17SDG AGENDA 2030 is a plan of action for people, planet and prosperity. It also seeks to strengthen universal peace in larger freedom. Eradicating poverty in all its forms and dimensions, including extreme poverty, is the greatest global challenge and an indispensable requirement for sustainable development. All countries and all stakeholders, acting in collaborative partnership, will implement the plan. We are resolved to free the human race from the tyranny of poverty and want and to heal and secure our planet. Organisations are determined to take the bold and transformative steps which are urgently needed to shift the world onto a sustainable and resilient path. As we embark on this collective journey, we pledge that no one will be left behind. The 17 Sustainable Development Goals and 169 targets which we are announcing demonstrate the scale and ambition of this new universal Agenda. They seek to build on the Millennium Development Goals and complete what these did not achieve. They seek to realize the human rights of all and to achieve gender equality and the empowerment of all women and girls. They are integrated and indivisible and balance the three dimensions of sustainable development: the economic, social and environmental.

GOALS AND TARGETS FOR MANKIND The Goals and targets will stimulate action over the next fifteen years in areas of critical importance for humanity and the planet: People We are determined to end poverty and hunger, in all their forms and dimensions, and to ensure that all human beings can fulfil their potential in dignity and equality and in a healthy environment. Planet We are determined to protect the planet from degradation, including through sustainable consumption and production, sustainably managing its natural resources and taking urgent action on climate change, so that it can support the needs of the present and future generations. Prosperity We are determined to ensure that all human beings can enjoy prosperous and fulfilling lives and that economic, social and technological progress occurs in harmony with nature. Peace We are determined to foster peaceful, just and inclusive societies which are free from fear and violence. There can be no sustainable development without peace and no peace without sustainable development. Partnership We are determined to mobilize the means required to implement this Agenda through a revitalised Global Partnership for Sustainable Development, based on a spirit of strengthened global solidarity, focussed in particular on the needs of the poorest and most vulnerable and with the participation of all countries, all stakeholders and all people. The interlinkages and integrated nature of the Sustainable Development Goals are of crucial importance in ensuring that the purpose of the new Agenda is realised. If we realize our ambitions across the full extent of the Agenda, the lives of all will be profoundly improved and our world will be transformed for the better. ď ś
There are many different ways in which schools can engage with the sustainable development goals, including advocating, implementing and championing the goals. At the heart of each of these, is the focus on introducing the Global Goals to the school’s student community, and on engaging students in taking concrete action towards the Goals.

“NO ONE IS LEFT BEHIND” Democracy is a system of governing where the citizens exercise power by voting, allowing them to choose who should run a particular community. There are different types of democracies, for example: direct democracy and representative democracy, both of them having different approaches to the communities. The Charter of Fundamental Rights is representing the basic rights that every human is entitled to have, such as the right to live, liberty and property, freedom of expression, pursuit of happiness and equality before law. As Article 1 of the United Nations “Universal Declarations of Human rights” (UDHR) says: “All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights. They are endowed with reason and conscience and should act towards one another in a spirit of brotherhood” . In my opinion, those fundamental human rights are the most important aspects in our daily lives. Freedom of expression is a synonym term for freedom of speech, which includes any act of seeking, receiving and imparting information, regardless of the medium use. This very brief presentation of those fundamental rights, represent just the peak of the complexity which truly stands behind the European Union. It is of great value to be reminded what the European Union stands for and provides to its own citizens. Our generation has been living through the longest period of peace and the greatest level of prosperity since the end of the Cold War. Never before, that many countries came together and worked together despite their differences in values, cultures and mindsets. Each and every single country which is part of the European Union, ended up in compromises and agreements for the benefit of the youth and future. Some crucial aspects that achieved peace and harmony throughout the European continent are the common values. A world without values would never be able to achieve great things but hate, conflicts and anarchy. Our European values must never be taken for granted, and must be valued and defended every day because they brought us peace, opportunities and hopes for a better life. They represent the ground foundation of what the European Union really means and should never be assumed as a given. The European Union is a political and economic union made up of 27 member states which are located on the European continent. The European Union creates a ground full of values and provides to each European citizen fundamental rights such as: human tolerance, freedom of expression, the right to live, the mass media liberty and so on and so forth. If those values are promoted in every country in the World, the young ones can get a taste of what liberty really is and would never fear the idea of a coming war. Values get us united, create opportunities and make fears vanishing. Nevertheless, every single time in our world history, it is proved that the greatest things were achieved when the people were united and were driven by common beliefs. Diana S. - Liceul GEP Romania

The associated targets aim: - to reduce the global maternal mortality ratio; - end preventable deaths of newborns and children; - end the epidemics of AIDS, tuberculosis, malaria and other communicable diseases; - reduce mortality from non-communicable diseases; - strengthen the prevention and treatment of substance abuse; - halve the number of deaths and injuries from road traffic accidents; - ensure universal access to sexual and reproductive health-care services; - achieve universal health coverage; - and reduce the number of deaths and illnesses from hazardous chemicals and pollution.

Facts and figures ABOUT GOAL 3 400 million At least 400 million people have no basic healthcare, and 40 percent lack social protection. 1.6 billion More than 1.6 billion people live in fragile settings where protracted crises, combined with weak national capacity to deliver basic health services, present a significant challenge to global health. 15 million By the end of 2017, 21.7 million people living with HIV were receiving antiretroviral therapy. Yet more than 15 million people are still waiting for treatment. 2 seconds Every 2 seconds someone aged 30 to 70 years dies prematurely from non-communicable diseases - cardiovascular disease, chronic respiratory disease, diabetes or cancer. 7 million 7 million people die every year from exposure to fine particles in polluted air. 1 in 3 More than one of every three women have experienced either physical or sexual violence at some point in their life resulting in both short- and long-term consequences for their physical, mental, and sexual and reproductive health.
