As a Colorado dad and avid hiker, I feel a responsibility to introduce my children to the state’s natural beauty and the many outdoor adventures that can be enjoyed here. The Broadmoor’s prime location at the foot of the Colorado Rockies offers numerous opportunites to fulfill this goal.
The moment we approached the Broadmoor Outfitters desk and saw the extensive menu of activities, my daughters’ eyes widened with excitement. Surrounded by trail maps, hiking boots, helmets, and other gear, we could feel the thrill of the unknown experiences waiting for us.
Our choices included hiking to waterfalls at Seven Falls, a half-day falconry adventure, The Broadmoor Soaring Adventure, a Wild West experience, and The Broadmoor Manitou and Pikes Peak Cog Railway, which takes you to the top of Pikes Peak. In short, we couldn’t go wrong.
My children are each different, with different likes and interests. The oldest is more curious about the history of the places we go, while my youngest enjoys scrambling over boulders and swinging from trees. My middle daughter thrives on competitive challenges. All three love animals.
Given this diversity, falconry seemed like the perfect choice to satisfy everyone. The next thing we knew, we were in the falconry center, beginning our lesson where my kids were, well, rapt by the raptors. We began our experience by examining each raptor up close. My children were captivated by these magnificent creatures, as we learned more about them and the “Sport of Kings.” We then ventured outside to watch the raptors fly and witness their incredible abilities in action.
We also walked up Cheyenne Canyon to Seven Falls, the multi-tiered waterfall in the heart of the canyon. The cascading water provided a scenic backdrop for our lunch at Restaurant 1858, where we enjoyed an outdoor table and sampled menu items like Colorado Rocky Mountain Red Trout, Inspiration Point Hikers Salad, Prospector’s Bison Burger, and House Made Texas Wild Boar Green Chili.
We also tried the Wild West Experience, driving up an old stage-coach route with a guide to throw axes and shoot arrows and air rifles. We also enjoyed exploring other trails and features around The Broadmoor property, hiking at Garden of the Gods and hand-feeding the giraffes at Cheyenne Mountain Zoo. Here’s a breakdown of some of the most genuine Colorado activities to be had when you belly up to that adventure desk at Broadmoor Outfitters:
The Broadmoor Soaring Adventure
PUT SOME ZIP IN YOUR TRIP
The Broadmoor Soaring Adventure takes guests traversing above the secluded Cheyenne Canyon for an unbelievable zip lining experience. You’ll soar high above rocky outcroppings and forested canyons on zip lines ranging in length from 250 to 1,800 feet, with some moderate hiking. Start your adventure at Broadmoor Outfitters’ headquarters, where you’ll be transported to the start of the course. Participants are fitted with top-of-the-line gear and then receive extensive instruction on a practice zip line. Participants must weigh between 90 and 250 pounds. Guests may choose one or both of our high-wire courses: The Woods Course and The Fins Course. The Woods Course features five zip lines, while The Fins Course has five zip lines, plus two 200-foot suspensionbridge crossings and a thrilling 180-foot controlled rappel at the end. Each course takes two hours to complete or, combined, they make up a four-hour adventure and the ultimate soaring experience!

Falconry Experience
ENJOY A CLOSE ENCOUNTER OF THE BIRD KIND
Led by a resident master falconer, The Broadmoor Falconry Experience is designed to teach about the birds themselves and the history of falconry. You’ll have the chance to handle a bird of prey, including hawks, falcons, and owls.
Start with the Beginners Lesson, where you will get the chance to interact with a variety of captive-bred, trained birds and hold a trained hawk on your fist. During the Intermediate Lesson, you’ll venture out onto one of The Broadmoor’s scenic trails, where under supervision of an expert, you will cast the hawk into a nearby pine and watch as it follows you from tree to tree, returning to your glove for a small reward. Both experiences are about 1.5 hours long and may be combined.
Wild West Experience
TRY YOUR HAND AT ESSENTIAL OLD WEST SKILLS
Your Wild West Experience begins with a chauffeured ride up Old Stage Road. You’ll park in a forested canyon where you will learn and hone the skills once necessary to survive in the Wild West. Our staff will teach the fundamentals of each activity and test your skills with challenging games, allowing for friendly competition.
Perfect your aim using standing archery targets and proceed onto a walking range populated by a variety of targets. Your guide will then show you the proper technique for tomahawk throwing, and you will have the opportunity to throw at three timber targets. Finally, have fun plinking away on the pellet gun range, where a plethora of targets provide many options for a satisfying hit. This experience lasts about 2.5 hours and has a minimum age of 5.
Hiking
TAKE THE SCENIC ROUTE WITH SELF-GUIDED AND GUIDED HIKES
Trails abound on and around The Broadmoor’s campus, which gives guests immediate access to North Cheyenne Canyon Park and Pike National Forest. You’re also a short drive from Colorado gems Garden of the Gods, on the other side of Colorado Springs, and Florissant Fossil Beds National Monument, about 35 miles to the west. Of course, you’re welcome to strap some shoes on and start walking the paths and neighborhoods surrounding The Broadmoor. You can also ask the concierge about nearby trailheads and head out on your own. Or, better yet, sign up for guided hikes up Mount Cutler trail or any number of area trails
