SPANNING MORE THAN 60,000 SQUARE FEET and 127 years of Olympic history, the United States Olympic & Paralympic Museum in Colorado Springs offers an immersive and universally accessible experience into the journey of Team USA’s Olympic and Paralympic athletes. Visitors can explore interactive exhibits, innovative displays, and a comprehensive collection of artifacts.

Colorado Springs is home to the U.S. Olympic & Paralympic Committees and the flagship U.S. Olympic & Paralympic Training Center. The addition of a permanent museum to honor Olympic and Paralympic legends and inspire tomorrow’s legends is a natural fit for “Olympic City, USA,” museum officials say.

The U.S. Olympic & Paralympic Museum was named by USA TODAY’s 10Best Readers’ Choice Awards as the country’s Best New Attraction when it opened in 2020. A visit begins in the U.S. Olympic & Paralympic Hall of Fame and visitors on their own Olympic journeys. Upon arrival, guests receive “credentials” and can choose their favorite Olympic and Paralympic sports to tailor the exhibits to their interests. For example, for those who select track and field, the exhibition experience might start rolling a film of Carl Lewis or Florence Griffith Joyner as guests approach.

Visitors can explore 12 galleries filled with artifacts and interactive exhibits. A museum highlight is the Parade of Nations gallery, culminating in a hallway walk leading into an arena, where a recording of the crowd’s roar offers a taste of the excitement athletes feel when entering an Olympic stadium.

“It takes upwards of a decade to make it to the Games, and then comes this moment walking into the stadium and getting that joyful, celebratory experience,” says Michelle Dusserre Farrell, a senior director at the USOPM and an Olympic silver medal winner as part of the 1984 U.S. gymnastics team. “This event is bigger than any one person, and we worked hard at crafting the exhibit experience to share that moment.

“This is what it feels like to be part of Team USA,” Farrell says. “It’s an incredibly unique experience the museum has created."
