Windstar Cruises unveils plans for two new Star Class ships
BY PABLO DIAZ
Windstar Cruises is on the verge of a thrilling expansion with the introduction of two new all-suite motor-yacht ships. An industry leader in small-ship luxury cruising, Windstar in April 2024 revealed renderings of its two new ships: Star Seeker and Star Explorer. Set to join the fleet in December 2025 and December 2026, these ships are designed to take sea travel to dazzling new heights.
“Our goal was to ensure that these ships are unmistakably Windstar,” Windstar President Christopher Prelog says, “and a significant amount of effort has gone into achieving this.” Windstar uses a collaborative design process, underscoring its dedication to blending top-notch innovation with its signature style of intimate cruising.
RENDERINGS OF STAR SEEKER AND STAR EXPLORER
Windstar prides itself on offering more than just sightseeing. The cruise line designs excursions that allow for deep cultural immersion.
Star Seeker and Star Explorer will each feature 112 beautifully crafted suites. More than just a place to stay, these suites boast full private verandas and infinity windows, offering guests endless ocean views. Adding a touch of exclusivity, the two new Owner’s Suites at the aft of each ship feature wraparound balconies that provide the perfect spot for enjoying an evening cocktail or dinner while gazing out at the sea. Designed to keep the ambiance intimate, these ships will allow for the personalized service that Windstar is celebrated for. With room for just 224 guests and a staff-to-guest ratio of 1:2, every aspect of the guest experience is carefully curated to guarantee privacy, comfort, and exceptional service.
As the Official Cruise Line of the James Beard Foundation, Windstar plans to maintain its
tradition of serving outstanding cuisine aboard the new ships. Guests will have four dining options to choose from: the reimagined main dining restaurant Amphora, the Star Grill, a nocharge specialty restaurant, and 24-hour room service.
Amphora will offer al fresco dining and a mix of sophisticated dishes, including specialties from James Beard Foundation–affiliated guest chefs. The Star Grill by Steven Raichlen will also allow guests to dine al fresco, pairing delicious meals with breathtaking views.
Life on the ships is set to be an indulgent affair with Windstar’s signature experiences. The ships will feature the brand’s iconic Watersports Platform, a cozy Yacht Club Café and lounge, a two-story spa and fitness center, and an intimate whirlpool at the bow. The spacious open deck invites guests to bask in the sun or enjoy Windstar’s renowned deck barbecues—a perfect blend of relaxation and fun.
Windstar Cruises offers a unique approach to sea travel that stands out in the world of luxury cruising, especially through its selection of unique small-ship destinations. With the
launch of these two new all-suite motor yachts, Windstar continues its dedication to bringing guests to corners of the globe that remain beyond the reach of larger vessels.
Small ships excel at navigating to smaller, less-visited ports, offering an intimate connection with local cultures and landscapes. This allows travelers to explore off-the-beatenpath destinations without the crowds associated with larger cruise ships. For instance, Windstar’s journeys include visits to picturesque coastal towns such as Seyðisfjörður in Iceland, as well as secluded bays and untouched islands, providing an exclusive glimpse into local life.
Windstar prides itself on offering more than just sightseeing. The cruise line designs excursions that allow for deep cultural immersion. Activities might include culinary tours where guests can taste and learn about local cuisine, workshops with artisans, or private performances showcasing traditional music and dance.
This approach turns each stop into an enriching and educational experience, deepening travelers’ understanding and appreciation of the places they visit.
Reflecting Windstar’s commitment to sustainability, the new ships have Tier III NOx-rated Rolls-Royce engines and can connect to shore power. They also have advanced wastewater treatment systems that meet all global standards, allowing Windstar to sail more sustainably.
This thoughtful approach allows guests to enjoy the natural beauty of spectacular destinations like the fjords of Norway or the coral atolls of the South Pacific without contributing to ecological damage.
Andrew N. Todd, President and CEO of Xanterra Travel Collection®, is optimistic about what’s ahead.
“Windstar Cruises is poised for remarkable growth and an exciting future,” he says. The introduction of these two new ships will also allow Windstar to redeploy the beloved Wind Star ship to Tahiti in 2027, meeting increased demand for sailings in French Polynesia.
Booking details for the Star Seeker will roll out in the summer of 2024, promising new routes and luxurious experiences for travelers keen to discover the world in style and comfort.
Windstar’s small ships enjoy flexibility that larger ships can’t match. They can dock at smaller ports, offer spontaneous stops at intriguing spots noticed along the route, and tailor activities based on the interests of the passengers aboard. This ensures that every cruise is a unique experience, shaped not only by the destination but also by the desires of the travelers.
From hidden Mediterranean coves to quiet Caribbean islands and dramatic Icelandic fjords, Windstar Cruises promises an intimate journey through the world’s most mesmerizing destinations—giving guests a sailing experience that’s truly 180 degrees from ordinary.

Looking for a vacation that will cater to all ages and interests? Try one of these family-friendly destinations.
BY VERONICA STODDART
Whether riding a train to the Grand Canyon, experiencing the geysers of Yellowstone National Park, or kayaking and horseback riding at Sea Island, a multi-generational vacation provides endless opportunities for family bonding.
Yellowstone National Park is one of the most popular family destinations in the United States. With nearly 3,500 square miles of land, it offers an incredible variety of activities, from geysers and hot springs to hiking and horseback riding.
One of the best ways to see wildlife is on the Wake Up to Wildlife tour. From 6:15 a.m. to 7:30 a.m. (depending on the pickup location), you’ll board a 13-seat 1930s vintage bus and venture out to the Lamar Valley. You’ll have a chance to spot elk, bison, and eagles while enjoying the open vistas of the valley. You’ll soon be wide awake marveling at the animals, which are most active in the early morning and the evening.
Of course, no trip to Yellowstone is complete without seeing the geysers. Old Faithful is famous for shooting steaming spray up to 180 feet into the
air every 90 minutes. To avoid the crowds, arrive at Old Faithful before 9:00 a.m. The Old Faithful Visitor Education Center is a great place to learn about the geology and geothermal forces that create geysers and hot springs.
Yellowstone also has a few choices when it comes to Wild West adventures. Take a guided horseback ride through the park at the Canyon Corral. If you have older kids, follow the ride with a hike on Mount Washburn Trail for some unbelievable views. For a different experience, head 19 miles north to Roosevelt Lodge and board a replica of the Tally-Ho stagecoach. Keep your eyes peeled for the deer, bison, and elk that favor this region.
You and your family will appreciate the views and likely spot wildlife during a Red Bus tour through Glacier National Park. Since 1914, the fleet of 17-seat, roll-back top buses has provided visitors with breathtaking views and unforgettable animal sightings. Choose between an east side or west side tour and let your knowledgeable driver/ guide highlight the natural and historical aspects of the park.
For the ultimate mix of comfort and convenience, stay at Many Glacier Hotel, the largest hotel in Glacier National Park. Located on the shore of Swiftcurrent Lake, this five-story hotel has unbeatable views and amenities, including an onsite restaurant, lounge, and gift shop.
If you’re looking for a year-round home base at the Gateway to Glacier, the 64-room Cedar Creek Lodge is a perfect choice. This property has the look and feel of a mountain lodge with modern style and comfort. Located just outside the park in Columbia Falls, Montana, it’s the perfect spot for hiking, biking, fishing, golfing, and more.
Skip the traffic and congested parking at Grand Canyon National Park and take a journey from historic Williams, Arizona, to the stunning South Rim of the Grand Canyon the way visitors did in the early 20th century—by train. With multiple departures, a trip aboard the Grand Canyon Railway is for anyone looking for a special, one-of-a-kind experience.
Relax and let the train take you through the high desert, prairie, and pine landscapes. Listen to folklore and music that brings the Old West to life, and enjoy the Wild West–style shootout and cowboy musicians that add to the ambiance.
For a more private and upscale experience, book a newly refurbished Rail Baron car. Choose from The Kansas, which can accommodate up to 18 day passengers or 6 overnight guests; The Utah, which can entertain 26 guests and has an onboard kitchen and bar; or The California, which can accommodate 44 guests during the day or 16 overnight and includes a second-story glass dome top with sofa seating for stargazing. The Grand Canyon Railway also offers the ability to book a completely private charter on your own schedule!
The Polar Express™, a 90-minute ride to the “North Pole,” is a must during the holiday season. Sip on hot chocolate, listen to the timeless Christmas story, and watch servers dance and sing along to the music before Santa boards the train. It’s a family tradition you’ll all look forward to every year.
Make fun-filled memories with your extended family at The Oasis at Death Valley, a true American Oasis in the middle of the largest national park in the lower 48. During the day, discover the
mountainous landscape of Death Valley National Park, the desert setting of the original Star Wars films.
Return to the resort to swim in a spring-fed pool and dine at one of our delightful restaurants. The resort has two properties: the historic AAA Four Diamond Inn at Death Valley and the family-friendly Ranch at Death Valley. Both offer activities for every age, including an 18-hole golf course, horseback riding, the Borax Museum, an old-timey soda fountain and ice cream parlor, authentic Western saloon, and new tavern.
Stay at The Ranch, where guest rooms offer a classic mid-century feel with easy access to the pool, sports courts, and playground. The Ranch boasts horseback and carriage rides at the stables, Jeep rentals to explore the park, and The Furnace Creek Golf Course at Death Valley—the lowest-elevation course in the world.
amenities and activities that go above and beyond, with three all-inclusive Wilderness retreats that allow families to reconnect without all the distractions of modern life.
Cloud Camp, perched 3,000 feet above The Broadmoor, is a place for families to reconnect via hiking, mule rides, and the world’s highest pickleball court. The Orvis-endorsed Fly Fishing Camp offers a private five-mile stretch of river with a 1:2 guide-to-guest ratio and all your gear, along with seven guest cabins. The Ranch at Emerald Valley was voted the No. 1 resort in Colorado by the Condé Nast Readers Awards and is the perfect setting for family fun with horseback riding, fishing, archery, and hiking.
These retreats and the resort provide the backdrop for unforgettable family adventures.
Meanwhile, the historic Inn at Death Valley offers quiet comfort for grown-ups and families with older children. The Oasis at Death Valley recently underwent a $250 million renovation, bringing new life and amenities to this iconic property. Escape and spend quality time relaxing by the pool, strolling through date palm gardens to the bubbling melody of natural springs, or watching a glorious sunset from the quaint stone patios.
A luxurious retreat perfect for families, The Broadmoor is situated at the foot of the Colorado Rockies. As the longest-running Forbes Five-Star and AAA Five Diamond resort, it offers a range of
A family-friendly resort on the Georgia coast, Sea Island has a variety of accommodations, including The Cloister and The Lodge (both Forbes Five-Star rated), the Cottages, and The Inn by Sea Island.
Boasting five miles of private beach and an entire Beach Club to enjoy—featuring three swimming pools, a waterslide and splash pad, poolside and oceanfront dining, sweets shop, bowling alley, nature center, Camp Cloister, and bicycle rentals— Sea Island is a vacation destination that everyone in the family will enjoy.

Planning a special vacation to commemorate a milestone moment is an exciting opportunity to create lasting memories in some of the most beautiful places in the world. To ensure that your celebration vacation is truly unforgettable, consider the following tips:
DETERMINE THE PURPOSE AND YOUR TRAVEL COMPANIONS
Start by asking yourself who will be joining you on the trip and what you want the focus of the vacation to be. This will help you decide between an exotic destination or a location closer to home. Consider the interests of your travel companions to ensure that everyone has a great time.
SET A BUDGET AND PLAN THE LENGTH OF YOUR VACATION
Establishing a budget is essential for any trip. Determine the amount you’re willing to spend, and plan the length of your vacation accordingly. This will help you narrow your options and choose the most suitable destinations and activities.
CONSIDER THE TIME OF YEAR AND AVAILABLE ACTIVITIES
Think about the time of year you’ll be traveling and the activities you’d like to experience. Research the destinations you’re interested in and learn about specific events or attractions during that time. This will help you tailor your itinerary to make the most of your celebration vacation.
EXPLORE YOUR OPTIONS WITH XANTERRA TRAVEL COLLECTION®
From romantic cruises in tropical destinations, to iconic national park stays, to exploring Europe on a walking or biking tour, to a historic journey aboard the train, Xanterra has something for everyone. Take the time to explore our collection of travel brands and find the perfect fit for your celebration vacation.
Next: Four types of celebration vacations to consider.
A romantic escape is a perfect way to mark an anniversary, vow renewal, or honeymoon. A celebration of love should be everything you’ve dreamed of—and more—in a place and in a way that commemorates your relationship. It should be geared to what you and your partner like to do and what brings you joy—whether that’s foodie forays, cultural experiences, outdoor activities or just relaxing one-on-one.
Windstar Cruises is tailormade for a couples vacation. Aboard luxury, yacht-style ships carrying just 148 to 312 guests, these intimate vessels provide a perfect setting, offering privacy, unique cultural experiences, and personalized service. On a Windstar Cruise, you can expect to discover secluded harbors and immersive cultural activities that you may not experience if traveling on your own.
Windstar provides a level of personalized service impossible on larger ships, with the kind of pampering that enhances the romantic mood. Indeed, Windstar has been
repeatedly voted “World’s Most Romantic Cruise Line” by readers of Brides magazine, Porthole Cruise Magazine, and CruiseCritic.com.
If you prefer a land-based vacation, book your stay at the historic AAA Four Diamond Inn at Death Valley. With an oasis-like setting, the 88-room property (including 22 brand-new casitas) offers surprising luxury in one of the world’s most dramatic desert landscapes—a place of shifting sand dunes, multi-hued rock formations, and hidden canyons.
Wake up before dawn to watch the rugged mountains turn pink with the sunrise; play a round of golf in the world’s lowest-elevation course; go for a swim in the spring-fed pool, complete with private cabanas and a pool bar; get a desert hot-stone massage in the brand-new spa; and then, after dark, gaze up at star-filled skies as the desert wind rustles the date palms. It’s a great way to celebrate Valentine’s Day, an engagement, or an anniversary.
There are times when you may want to celebrate a special event on your own—perhaps a promotion, a new job, or a graduation—or you may not be able to travel with a companion. In that case, you’ll want to consider choices where you’ll have fun and feel comfortable and safe.

There’s nothing like a family reunion or a multi-generational vacation to bring everyone together, develop closer bonds, and create memories that will last forever. But it is important to consider everyone’s needs and desires, from the youngest to the oldest.
A trip on the historic Grand Canyon Railway offers the experience of a lifetime, whether you’re 6 or 96. An exhilarating 65-mile trip from Williams, Arizona, to the Grand Canyon’s South Rim, it traverses Arizona’s 5,000-foothigh Colorado Plateau, while unfolding a unique view of the American West. You can ride in glass-domed historic railway cars with steam engines that have been fully refurbished to their original 1920s grandeur. Onboard, a cowboy singer serenades passengers with classic trail songs as you roll along. What’s more, no matter the size of your group, you have the option to reserve
the train in its entirety or by individual car, if you prefer a more intimate experience. The journey culminates in one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World: the Grand Canyon. Stay overnight at one of the Grand Canyon National Park Lodges—such as the grand El Tovar Hotel—and take a signature mule ride to the canyon floor. Your family will thank you!
Another option is a bucketlist trip to Yellowstone National Park. With various lodging options and a wide range of activities, there is something for each family member to enjoy. Witness wildlife in its natural habitat, stand in awe of the beauty and power of the famous Old Faithful geyser, or hop on a wagon ride through the park’s stunning landscapes. Whether opting for an actionpacked trip itinerary or laying low and reconnecting with nature, Yellowstone is a perfect destination for families.

From hiking and mule riding to river floating and embarking on a historic train ride, adventurers can get their adrenaline flowing at this spectacular natural wonder.
BY KIT TY BEAN YANCEY
This jagged 277-mile-long gorge carved by the Colorado River and reaching depths of a mile is one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World and the centerpiece of Grand Canyon National Park.
You can explore its 1.2 million acres on foot, by bus or bike, on water, and even by mule. Book as far ahead as possible, since popular activities typically sell out months in advance.
Here are seven options for enjoying the majesty of the Grand Canyon.
Descend on a Grand Canyon mule 10 miles from the South Rim to the canyon floor on the famed Bright Angel Trail, built and named by Ralph Cameron and originally a toll trail. Although it’s very narrow, mules have carried more than 500,000 visitors safely since they were first offered in 1887, the National Park Service says. About 5½ hours later, after a picnic lunch, arrive at Phantom Ranch, the only lodging below the canyon rim, in time to dig into a belt-busting dinner served family-style and sleep in a cabin on a bunk bed. Riders must be at least 9 years old and weigh less than 200 pounds, fully dressed. These and other mule trips are so popular that savvy travelers often book a year in advance.
Access to the park’s most popular hiking path is easy. The century-old trail starts in Grand Canyon Village on the South Rim and is not for those afraid of heights, although everyone from children to grandparents enjoys it. Most day trippers turn around (maybe after a picnic) at Havasupai Gardens, about halfway down. A trip to the base and back up can take more than 10 hours, so the National Park Service discourages hiking down and back in the same day. Be sure to hydrate and eat frequently, especially salty snacks. Those who wish to camp overnight will need a permit.
Visitors can enjoy spectacular views from the back of a sure - footed mule while riding alongside the canyon’s rim.
Visitors can enjoy spectacular views from the back of a sure-footed mule while riding alongside the canyon’s rim. Guides leading the four-mile, three-hour trek on the East Rim trail will share information about the canyon’s history, rock formations, and more. Riders must be at least 9 years old and weigh less than 225 pounds, fully dressed.
Pass prairie and ponderosa pine—and perhaps even an elk or two—on your way to the South Rim. Trains depart in the morning from Williams, Arizona, about 30 miles west of Flagstaff, and return in the early evening. Expect surprises from the performers in authentic Wild West garb, who bring the life of the Old West alive, starting with a shootout at the 1908 Williams Depot prior to each morning’s departure. More Wild West entertainment aboard the train features strolling musicians

who roam the train. Passengers have time to explore the South Rim and experience two centuryold train depots.
If you’re staying on the South Rim, you can book van transport to Williams and ride back one way, or you can leave your car in Williams while staying at the park. Train buffs should look into rides featuring a Grand Canyon Railway vintage steam locomotive, now powered by eco-friendly waste vegetable oil.
This one’s a daylong, multi-adventure outing. Fly in a plane to Page, Arizona, enjoying more views of the Grand Canyon and Lake Powell than you see on a typical helicopter tour. See stunning Antelope Canyon with a Native American guide. Then take a 15-mile “smooth water” float trip, suitable for children. A box lunch is included, and you’ll be driven back to the South Rim.
Leave the driving to a knowledgeable tour guide on interpretive bus tours, which relieve visitors of the stress of driving and parking and show the canyon in a new light. Taking advantage of the spectacular sunrise and sunset hours, these and other tours are narrated by a driver who also provides information on Grand Canyon history and geology.
For mile after mile of unfolding views, get in your car (or RV or motorcycle) and head east from the Historic Village, where you’ll soon discover even more of the park at places like the Yavapai Geology Museum at Yavapai Point. Don’t miss the Discovery Channel film, A
Journey of Wonder, presented at the Visitor Center, followed by the historic Tusayan Museum and ruins, which include the remnants of homes and kivas created by Pueblo peoples 800 years ago. Roughly 25 miles from the Historic Village, Mary Colter’s 1932 masterpiece—the Desert View Watchtower—gives you a heightened awareness of the Grand Canyon’s majesty when viewed from the top of this classic 70-foot-high observation tower.

One of the world’s most magnificent oasis resorts is closer than you think.
BY VERONICA STODDART
Like shimmering mirages, oases are magical places that have captivated the imagination for centuries. They conjure images of the film Lawrence of Arabia, or the tune “Midnight at the Oasis” sung by Maria Muldaur. Exotic and evocative, they are the stuff of legend.
But oases are more than just romantic wonders. Beckoning with their unexpected bursts of green amid an endless expanse of tawny sand, these extraordinary desert gardens offer a vital life-sustaining source of water in a hostile environment. Fought over for centuries, these rare accidents of nature are prized sanctuaries in the scorching desert and sometimes the only barrier between life and death.
Indeed, they served as a precious refuge for merchants, pilgrims, and weary travelers throughout the decades, a place where they could replenish their supplies of water and food. Oases, in fact, defined the trajectory of ancient trade routes, and for visitors, they offered the balm of a dip in a natural pool, the cool shade of sheltering palms, and a refreshing reprieve for body and soul—just as they do today.
But what, exactly, is an oasis? It’s an area in an otherwise arid region made fertile by a source of freshwater that supports plant and animal life. The water comes from a natural spring or other underground source, making true oases relatively rare throughout the world. The Sahara, the largest nonpolar desert on Earth, supports about 90 major oases in an area as large as the continental United States. South America, meanwhile, has only one.
For travelers seeking these miracles of the desert, a handful of high-end resorts offer stylish accommodations at some of the world’s most beautiful oases. And one of them is right here in America.
“They took paradise and they made it better.”
— Bill Walton
Ancient waters bubble up from the ground to support an entire ecosystem at The Oasis at Death Valley, a secluded resort tucked into one of the world’s most dramatic desert settings, the 3.4 million–acre Death Valley National Park (the largest park in the lower 48). This wondrous winter vacation destination in America’s great desert is just two hours from Las Vegas and a little more than four hours from Los Angeles.
It offers spring-fed pools averaging a comfortable 87 degrees, the lowest USGA golf course on Earth, cascading bougainvillea-adorned Xanadu Gardens, and spring-watered groves of stately date palms. It’s also a natural haven for wildlife: Kit fox, desert cottontails, coyotes, roadrunners, and various species of birds all thrive in or near the oasis.
Dating to 1927, the historic property encompasses two lodgings: the luxurious AAA Four Diamond Inn at Death Valley and the family-friendly Ranch at Death
Valley. The historically accurate restoration preserved the original design, materials, and colors of the buildings, while updating the infrastructure to modern standards.
The result is a return to the elegance of Old Hollywood, when The Inn attracted the likes of Marlon Brando, Clark Gable, and Carole Lombard—and more recently the cast and crew of Star Wars Accommodations at the 66-room Inn marry classic décor with modern amenities. Fine-art color landscape photographs bring the splendor of Death Valley right into the rooms. Want total privacy? Stay in one of 22 new Inn casitas or 80 new Ranch cottages.
In the evening, dine on classic fare regionally flavored with cactus, citrus, date, and even pomegranate from the garden, while gazing at the desert salt pans and majestic Panamint Mountains. Watch a glorious sunset from one of the stone patios, or admire the Milky Way from the Stargazers Deck in this internationally recognized Gold-Tier Dark Sky Park. And hoist a cold one at The Last Kind Words Saloon, a throwback to the Old West.
No wonder the late great basketball Hall of Famer and broadcaster Bill Walton was a regular guest at The Inn for more than two decades.
“It’s everything I love. I love nature, I love
the changing light, I love the desert air here,” he once said. “The spring that feeds this resort is just phenomenal. The quality of the water.
“They took paradise and they made it better,” he added. “They’ve made the hotel even nicer while maintaining the culture and the tradition and the history, the architecture and the stonework.
“It’s such a healing place, it’s such an inspiring place … a place of enlightenment and imagination and creativity. You’re just awestruck by the magnificence and the grandeur of nature in Death Valley.”

While The Oasis at Death Valley is a rare upscale oasis resort, here are four others at some of the world’s most beautiful oases—from the sands of the Sahara to the Arabian Desert.
» The Qasr Al Sarab Desert Resort by Anantara at Liwa Oasis in the United Arab Emirates shimmers like a mirage in the undulating dunes of the world’s largest uninterrupted sand desert, known as the Empty Quarter. This upscale retreat on the outskirts of Abu Dhabi resembles a vision from One Thousand and One Nights emerging from the date-palm producing Liwa Oasis that’s still used by local Bedouin tribes to this day.
» Imagine an allvilla luxury retreat in the middle of the windswept Saudi Arabian desert, in an oasis that has served as a trading crossroads for millennia. That’s
Banyan Tree AlUla, set in the sprawling AlUla Oasis in Saudi Arabia, a lush haven on the ancient Incense Route that has provided life to residents, travelers, and flora and fauna for eons, due to its natural springs. That spring-fed land harbors a profusion of date palms stretching to the horizon like a dense green tapestry.
» The Dar Ahlam is a restored 19th-century kasbah, or fortress, with a storybook setting near one of the most beautiful palm groves in Morocco—Skoura, dubbed “the oasis with 1,000 palm trees.” Springing abruptly from the ochre landscape, the Skoura oasis near Ouarzazate, Morocco, also harbors more than 100 bird species, thanks to its centuriesold underground water canals.
» A gateway to the legendary Sahara, the luxurious Anantara Sahara Tozeur Resort & Villas sprawls near the mountainous, spring-fed Chebika Oasis at Tozeur in southwestern Tunisia. Here you can sample classic desert experiences: Witness a desert sunrise from your own pool villa, feast on Middle Eastern cuisine Berber style under the stars, and traverse the shifting dunes at sunset astride a camel. Relax in the marble Ottoman hammam and soak in a traditional Berber bath. And enjoy the Arabian Nights pavilion, where chefs roast lamb and belly dancers and snake charmers move to traditional music.
Discover why visiting during the secret season should be at the top of your bucket list.
BY JAYNE CLARKE
Winter is Yellowstone National Park’s quietest season, but we’ll share a lesser-known fact: It’s actually one of the best times of year to visit. Many insiders will attest that the key to a magical, once-ina-lifetime trip is experiencing the wonder of the park in winter.
Some of the best wildlife, geyser viewing, and photography opportunities arise in the dead of winter, when the snow-white landscape provides the contrast that makes animals and thermal wonders appear even more dramatic.
Two iconic park lodges— Old Faithful Snow Lodge and Mammoth Hot Springs Hotel, about 50 miles apart— remain open from midDecember to early March to accommodate winter guests. Starting in mid-December, a plethora of fun activities cater to all kinds of visitors. If you dream of exploring the stunning landscapes, strap on some snowshoes or cross-country skis for the ultimate adventure. Or take a whirl around the ice rink for an outdoor activity the whole family can enjoy. If lower-key pursuits are your objective, witness wildlife from the comfort and warmth of a snowcoach. Or simply cozy up with a good book in front of a lodge fireplace. There’s something for everyone at the world’s first national park. Have we convinced you to book your next bucketlist trip during this often overlooked and underrated season? If so, here are some expert tips for planning the ultimate vacation.
Yes, bears take to their dens for a long winter’s nap, but other Yellowstone denizens are up and about. Moreover, they can be easier to spot, thanks to their heightened contrast against a blanket of pristine snow. Plus, their snow-outlined footprints make animals easier to track.
TIPS: A premier viewing spot is Lamar Valley in the park’s Northern Range. You’ll find serious wolf watchers here along the roadsides behind powerful spotting scopes. Watch for bison herds trudging through the unfettered landscape, their breath steamy in the winter air.
Bison often convene near the park’s thermal features for an impromptu steam bath.
As in other seasons, wildlife is most active at dawn and dusk.
Stay at least 25 yards away from bison, elk, and pronghorn, and 100 yards or more from wolves and bears. (During warm winters, bears have been spotted as early as February.)
It’s easy to go car-free in winter. Snowcoaches shuttle visitors between Old
Faithful and Mammoth Hot Springs and venture into territory beyond on guided outings. The Madison Wildlife Excursion follows a scenic seven-mile corridor in search of wildlife. On the Lamar Valley Wildlife Tour, a specially equipped mini-bus departs in the early morning from the Mammoth Hot Springs Hotel and includes a breakfast snack and boxed lunch. Most park roads close to regular traffic during the winter (usually from early November to early April). If you do drive outside the park or on the one park road—open to private vehicles from the north entrance in Gardiner, Montana, through the Northern Range of Yellowstone to Cooke City, Montana—make certain your vehicle has adequate tires for driving on snow and ice.
Pack essentials, such as binoculars, a foamrubber mat to stand on and prevent the cold from penetrating your soles, a thermos filled with a hot beverage, and food to fuel your wanderings. (You can order boxed lunches from the Mammoth Hot Springs or Old Faithful Snow Lodge dining rooms.)
Yellowstone’s dramatic landscapes become all the more breathtaking against winter’s icy backdrop, when the muted light brings an ethereal quality to photos.
TIPS: The pros get out early to take advantage of the dramatic light.
Leave the details to the experts by booking an all-day Winter Photo Safari along the Firehole and Madison river corridors. Guided instruction and lunch are part of the tour. Dress in layers and wear warm boots with thick soles. Consider wearing thin, rubbertipped gloves while shooting and slip a pair of mittens over them afterward.
Keep your camera cold but your batteries warm. If your camera is warm, the lens will fog up when cold air hits it. Batteries drain more rapidly in cold weather, so tuck extras in a pocket or other warm place. If you’re using a cellphone camera, protect your device by keeping it close to your body for warmth.
Protect your camera lens near erupting geysers, as silica in the water of thermal features bonds to glass and plastic.
The simple yet efficient snowshoe enables you to stride somewhat effortlessly over untrodden paths without getting mired in snow. It’s a wonderful way to experience off-thebeaten-path spots. A bonus: It’s easy. If you can walk, you can snowshoe.
TIPS: Join like-minded souls on an Old Faithful
Snowshoe Tour. The threehour trek maintains an easy pace on mostly flat terrain, and it ventures into forested wonderlands and along the Firehole River. Or rent a pair of snowshoes at Mammoth or Old Faithful and go it on your own on one of the snowshoe trails or on a ranger-led hike.
Dress in layers so you can shed outerwear as you warm up. Moisture-wicking fabrics—such as silk, wool, and some synthetics—are best as base layers. Tote plenty of water.
Gaiters—waterproof leggings worn over the lower pant legs—prevent snow from getting into your boots. You can even rent a pair in the park.
Sunscreen is essential, even on cloudy days. So are sunglasses.
Yellowstone’s dramatic landscapes become all the more breathtaking against winter’s icy backdrop
Protect your phone by using a waterproof case that allows you to take pictures through the plastic. Carry a foam rubber pad to sit on.
With a variety of groomed ski trails for all ability levels, Yellowstone is paradise for cross-country aficionados. You can download helpful National Park Service maps online, but before setting out, check in at the Bear Den Ski Shop at Mammoth or Old Faithful for current conditions. The shops rent ski gear, and you can even book a lesson.
TIPS: Ski shuttles operate three times daily, ferrying visitors from Mammoth Hot Springs to the Indian Creek Cross Country Ski Area. Another shuttle carries skiers from Old Faithful Snow Lodge to nearby trails.
Join a group for a fullday ski tour in the park’s spectacular Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone region. A shorter five-mile guided Lone Star Excursion hugs the Firehole River. Or let experts guide you on custom ski tours departing from Mammoth.
Pack snacks and water, and follow all the recommendations outlined for snowshoeing.
These geothermal dynamos appear even more stunning in winter. Ice formations on nearby trees and structures add to the otherworldly setting. You can even get a sauna effect by standing in a geyser’s steamy wake.
TIPS: Check with the National Park Service for updated predictions for when eruptions are
expected. Bring a pad to sit on while you wait. Protect your camera and glasses lenses from the steam of thermal features.
Yellowstone has two outdoor rinks: at Old Faithful Snow Lodge and Mammoth Hot Springs Hotel.
TIPS: Ice time is free, and if you’re a hotel guest, you can rent skates at no cost. Work up an appetite for dinner by taking an evening whirl around a lighted rink.
Sit back and enjoy the ride as an expert takes the wheel in one of the park’s custom snowcoaches. The drivers know the lay of the land and are on the lookout for wildlife and other features you might miss on your own.
TIPS: Several tours offer the comfort of a heated snowcoach. Try the three-hour Firehole Basin Winter Adventure and enjoy spectacular scenery and wildlife watching. Or the two-hour evening Steam, Stars, and Winter Soundscapes Tour that focuses on sounds rather than sights. Or the five-hour Norris Geyser Basin Tour, a well-kept winter secret. Bring your camera. The coaches’ panoramic windows are photo friendly. Pack a small bag with snacks, drinks, and other essentials.
Staying in the park is the best way for visitors to experience all it has to offer. Once the day-visitors leave, Yellowstone remains for the in-park overnight guests alone. Yellowstone National Park Lodges offer tours and activities guided by Certified Interpretive Guides that help create memorable experiences. For more information on lodging, tours, and vacation packages, visit Yellowstone NationalPark Lodges.com or call 307-344-7311.

With a ban on large cruise ships to protect against over-tourism, small luxury ships are the key to intimacy, romance, and embracing the legendary islands
BY VERONICA STODDART
Across the Pacific and under the Southern Cross are the fabled islands of French Polynesia— considered by many to be one of the most beautiful and romantic destinations on Earth.
So as not to be “loved to death,” French Polynesia, commonly referred to as Tahiti (also the main island in the chain of 100+ islands and atolls), has banned large cruise ships from calling on the islands. Only ships with 2,500 passengers or fewer can berth in Tahiti and Moorea, while Bora Bora allows only 1,200 passengers a day. These regulations, designed to protect the destination and lessen crowds, only enhance
the experience provided by the 312-guest Star Breeze, an all-suite luxury yacht operated by Windstar Cruises. Given the limited number of hotels and resorts, one of the best ways to see more of the destination is aboard a small cruise ship. It’s also the most economical because it already includes both accommodations and dining, and there is no packing and unpacking as you move from island to island, ports, bays, and atolls.
Sailing the islands of Tahiti on Windstar Cruises’ Star Breeze takes you from one legendary French Polynesian destination to another. With more than 35 years of cruising in Tahiti, Windstar is the most experienced cruise line in the region, and the award-winning line has developed strong relationships over the years, creating programs that give back to local communities— like a partnership with Moorea-based nonprofit Coral Gardeners that both protects and enhances the coral reefs that make Tahiti so vibrant.
Windstar’s recently renovated Star Breeze calls Papeete its homeport year-round, meaning that there are ample opportunities to plan a romantic sailing whenever you have time to escape. You’ll fall in love with this destination that is just a few hours farther than Hawaii, but a whole world away. Small
ships mean big access to Tahiti’s stunning tiny bays, hidden lagoons, and pristine beaches so beautiful they’ll take your breath away. Star Breeze also overnights in destinations like Bora Bora and Raiatea to give guests time to explore, relax, taste, and embrace these almost mythical islands. Windstar offers an elevated sailing experience given the ship’s multiple dining options, enlarged spa/ fitness center, and spacious all-suite accommodations. Star Breeze is large enough to pamper and entertain, yet small enough to tuck into delightful tiny harbors and hidden coves that others can’t reach. The all-suite yacht’s accommodations all have ocean views (there are no interior cabins on Windstar) and at least 277 square feet of comfort featuring separate sleeping and living areas. Expect a full-size tub or luxurious shower, as well as Egyptian cotton linens, walk-in mirrored closets with ample space, plus granite
vanities with a magnifying mirror and chair. Two specialty suites designed to invoke the ambiance of Forbes FiveStar sister properties, The Broadmoor and Sea Island, recently picked up interior design awards in London. These cruises are so intimate, you’ll feel like you’re sailing on your own private yacht.
A staff-to-guest ratio of 1:1.5 ensures that there is attention to every detail of this romantic escape. And because there are at most 312 guests on board, there is no wait list to dine, no multiple seatings to force into your schedule (or tables filled with strangers you have to make small talk with), no upsell for specialty restaurants—plus included 24-hour room service. With dishes created by James Beard Award–winning chefs; local seafood; aged spirits; an innovative plant-based program; and fresh produce purchased from local markets by Windstar chefs (often with guests in tow), Windstar Cruises caters to all palates and culinary interests. All guests receive a personal set of complimentary snorkel equipment for the duration of the cruise and have access to Windstar’s Watersports Platform, which means the South Pacific is your swimming pool as you float, paddleboard, and kayak right off the yacht. That’s right, the warm blue waters of the South Pacific are your infinity pool.
Naturally, there is an extensive array of shore excursions to choose from, like outings to lush rainforests; shopping (and even diving) for black pearls;
drift snorkeling among coral gardens; and experiencing Polynesian culture—from tikis to taro to tiare flowers. All Windstar guests get to delve into Polynesian culture on a deserted Tahitian motu, watching the local fire dancers light up the night during a complimentary Bora Bora Destination Discovery Event. Onboard lectures on Tahitian
culture (like tattoos) give more insight, while local musicians take center stage for a dose of authentic entertainment.
New this year, Windstar is introducing a shore excursion taking guests to the Coral Gardeners’ facility to meet the team, visit the nurseries, and plant their own coral. Guests will learn about the importance of protecting the coral in a hands-on and interactive way. Staff from Coral Gardeners explain their process of selecting heatresistant coral, growing coral in nurseries, and replanting
healthy coral on damaged reefs to restore the entire ecosystem and bring back marine diversity. To continue to raise awareness, Windstar Cruises has also recently launched an engagement speaker series onboard Star Breeze when in Moorea. The informative lecture by a Coral Gardeners team member raises awareness and educates guests on coral reef preservation. To date, Windstar, along with its guests, have adopted over 2,500 corals. Windstar’s goal is to open
a dedicated nursery supporting 5,000 corals in 2025.
For couples looking to make their Tahitian cruise the ultimate romantic getaway, Windstar can set up a dinner under the stars and a champagne breakfast in bed, plus a romance-inspired turndown service each night. If that’s not enough love, Windstar can arrange for an exchange of vows ceremony (led by the captain) with a flower bouquet, elegant cake, and a champagne toast with canapés for 10 guests.
While some guests choose to make this their unofficial wedding ceremony, many opt for a renewal of vows to signify a major anniversary milestone. Cruise-only pricing is available, but Windstar also offers several Tahitian cruise and air packages that have round-trip airfare from Seattle and Los Angeles to Papeete on Air Tahiti Nui, making trip planning even easier. These
include pre- and post-cruise overnight accommodations; arrival and departure transfers between airport, hotels, and yacht; and for the Seattle flight, a three-night pre-cruise stay at the Hotel Manava in Moorea, among other perks.
There are also options to extend or add to a cruise.
The new Tahiti & Moorea Foodie Cruise Tour is a three-day extension to
Windstar’s seven-day Dreams of Tahiti cruise, with three nights in a garden bungalow at the Hotel Manava Beach Resort & Spa Moorea; a halfday Moorea food adventure including locally produced liquor and juice tastings, traditional Ma’a tinito (a Tahitian twist on Chinese food), and stops at exemplary roadside stands; a full-day Moorea snorkeling tour of
Cook and Opunohu bays with lunch and cultural demonstrations; and transfers.
The Overwater Bungalow & Tahitian Paradises Cruise Tour is a romance-filled threeday extension featuring accommodations in an overwater bungalow at a four-star resort including three nights at the Hotel Manava Beach Resort & Spa Moorea, a breakfast delivered to the bungalow via canoe, a romantic beach dinner, a half-day private car tour, and all transfers.

A growing fleet of electric bikes is expanding horizons for travelers on two wheels
BY VERONICA STODDART
Bob White, 76, is such an avid cyclist that he typically logs 8,000 miles a year, including the 19 bike trips he has taken with VBT Bicycling Vacations. But despite his extensive experience, he credits the company’s introduction of e-bikes in 2017 as a gamechanger for him and his wife, Karen. “When you’re in a place you don’t know, you have hill anxiety,” White says. “But when you have an e-bike, you don’t care what’s around the corner. You’re always going to be able to make it up a hill.”
Electric bikes, or e-bikes, use a nearly silent electric motor to amplify riders’ pedaling power, which helps propel them up those challenging hills or extend the distances they can ride comfortably. Though not as powerful as
“Since guests on e-bikes can indeed bike faster and longer, we have started adding additional ride options on our tours.”
motorbikes or mopeds, e-bikes provide a boost of power on demand while riders are pedaling, to complement their own propulsion and speed. Cyclists can choose from multiple levels of assistance—or no assistance at all.
Not surprisingly, the extra push an e-bike rider enjoys is expanding the bicycle touring industry by attracting a wider range of people, according to Jamen Yeaton-Masi, Vice President of Worldwide Operations for 53-yearold VBT. Now people of all ages and mobility are joining its trips—from spouses and friends of experienced riders who never thought they’d be able to keep up to older guests who thought their cycling days were over to those put off by fears of an elitist cycling culture.
Today, VBT offers electric bikes from its fleet of 1,100 on virtually all of its 62 tours around the globe—from Austria to Vietnam. Its guided and self-guided tours, which average 20 riders each, range from five to eight days.
In addition to broadening its reach, VBT has seen other changes, too. “Since guests on e-bikes can indeed
bike faster and longer, we have started adding additional ride options on our tours,” Yeaton-Masi says.
For example, Croatia is now one of VBT’s most popular regions, often selling out, even though these tours are rated moderate due to the hilly terrain. The e-bike usage on these tours is often more than 80% of the guests. Plus, VBT has always wanted to offer tours in Switzerland but hesitated because of the mountainous landscape. In 2025 the company will offer its firstever e-bike-only self-guided biking tour in that country.
Motorized bikes offer other benefits as well. “They have also kept our groups closer together … since there’s less waiting around for slower cyclists, which makes timing more enjoyable for group meals and activities,” Yeaton-Masi says. “Most importantly, e-bikes have given our guests more leisure time to truly enjoy our beautiful boutique hotels and to pursue optional cultural activities. We’re seeing more demand for optional off-bike experiences.”
Guests still get a good workout, but on e-bikes, they have enough energy at the end of the day to explore their destinations on foot. Indeed, seeing a place at ground level is one of the most rewarding features of a cycling trip. It opens up accessibility to places and
experiences unavailable to cars or tour buses.
“What I especially like about VBT is the combination of riding and the off-the-bike experience—the excursions and museums. The guides are mostly exceptional,” White says. “And with biking you cover a lot more miles than hiking—20 to 50 miles a day.”
Plus, cycle tours offer the opportunity to travel with like-minded companions, who can become lifelong friends. “You’re with people who like to bike—we have that in common,” White says. “Most of them I still email with six years later.”
Beyond tours, e-biking has taken off around the world. The global electric bike market is projected to grow at an annual rate of 15.6% from 2023 to 2030, as more cities close some roads to traffic and add dedicated lanes for two-wheelers. According to the North American Bikeshare & Scootershare Association, bike-share systems using e-bikes increased from 28% in 2019 to 44% in 2020.
But the biggest reason White and his wife choose e-bikes is “because we’re on vacation,” he says. “We don’t want to get back to the hotel and be too exhausted to go out to a concert or whatever. We want to look around and see the sights.”

Here are some of the most innovative, groundbreaking ways Xanterra Travel Collection® helps minimize its impact on the environment to support a cleaner, greener future.
The trains’ two steam engines run on recycled vegetable oil collected from local restaurants.
When do bad apples help our planet? When they’re fed to the famous mules in the Grand Canyon and come out as manure used by local nurseries and farmers. Since 2013, a mule named Vista, along with 147 of his fellow park mules, have feasted on 35 tons of shriveled apples and other food scraps such as melon rinds, broccoli stalks, and carrot peelings generated by Grand Canyon National Park Lodges restaurants. Not only does that keep the food waste out of landfills, but those hardworking mules also produce up to 2 million pounds of manure per year.
Through what it calls “Operation Shrivelly Apples,” Xanterra has returned tons of food back to the Earth by using beasts of burden to lighten the load we put on our planet. Thank you, Vista, for that.
The best way to arrive at Grand Canyon National Park also helps to keep about 50,000 cars outside the park each year. You can ride the Grand Canyon Railway from Williams, Arizona, on a scenic 65-mile, 2.5-hour route across the Colorado Plateau to the edge of the canyon’s South Rim. But this train does more than just replace those polluting cars. Instead of using coal or diesel fuel, each locomotive’s two steam engines use
for an unforgettable journey and help preserve the park in the process.
Who better to preside over efforts to reduce greenhouse gases than great visionaries like George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt, and Abraham Lincoln? Just a few years ago, Xanterra built a 975-panel solar carport at Mount Rushmore under the watchful eyes of these past presidents. This structure now generates over half the electricity used by the restaurant and gift shop, while the remaining power comes from a nearby wind farm. Thanks to buying carbon offsets for the remaining direct emissions, Mount Rushmore is now a carbonneutral operation.
The Oasis at Death Valley, a beautiful eco-resort in the middle of the 3.4 million–acre Death Valley National Park, has plenty of sun but not much water. So the property harnesses the power of one while carefully conserving the other. It generates reliable solar energy with one of the hospitality industry’s largest solar photovoltaic systems.
And because the park is the driest place in North America—it averages less than two inches of rainfall a year—the resort recycles the precious water from natural springs to feed two pools, water the golf course and gardens (planted with drought-tolerant species), and eventually return it to nature’s watershed.
about 1,200 gallons of recycled waste vegetable oil collected from local restaurants per round-trip journey. This significantly reduces waste and emissions compared with using ultra-low-sulfur diesel. Think of that with your next order of fries!
In addition, Xanterra harvests rainwater and snowmelt to operate its steam locomotives, taking advantage of a renewable water resource in this water-stressed area. As a result, it has reduced potable water consumption by more than 1.2 million gallons to date. So ride the rails
Did you know that you can feast on sustainably raised beef at the Yellowstone National Park Lodges restaurants and help support native grasslands in a first-of-its-kind project in the U.S.? Xanterra helps four ranches outside the park participate in a 209,000-acre project to improve soil health, provide forage for cattle, and remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere to help reduce the effects of climate change. The project also offsets all the emissions from electricity used at the lodges while restoring a damaged ecosystem and improving biodiversity. All from regenerative ranching practices.
Stargazers, rejoice! Xanterra, along with the National Park Service, helps the stars at night shine big and bright in Grand Canyon National Park. By reducing light pollution and greenhouse gas emissions, Xanterra preserves views of the
dazzling night sky and protects nocturnal animals and ecosystems in the park. Because nearly 2,000 light fixtures have been replaced since 2013—nearly half of them by Xanterra—DarkSky International recognized Grand Canyon as the International Dark Sky Place of the Year in 2019.
Xanterra uses similar outdoor lighting best practices at The Oasis at Death Valley and Waterton-Glacier International Peace Park (which contains Glacier National Park), which
contributed to them all becoming designated International Dark-Sky Parks by DarkSky International.
Xanterra’s many national park operations boast some of the most inspiring scenery on Earth: stunning vistas, deep canyons, and desert peaks. But purple plumbing pipes? Yup, they’re used for reclaimed water, one of the key ways to reuse and conserve this precious resource in Grand Canyon National Park. Quite simply, reclaimed water is wastewater that is treated and reused for a variety of purposes, such as drip irrigation and toilet flushing in the lodges, including Grand Canyon’s Bright Angel Lodge. By reusing water rather than pumping it from the nearby springs or aquifer, the Grand Canyon lodges save about 4 million gallons of freshwater every year.
When you eat at Xanterra’s 56 restaurants, you can expect food that tastes good—and also does good. That’s because the eateries strive for 70% of food and beverages to be sourced locally (within 500 miles) and sustainably, while reducing chemical additives, saving water, reducing transportation, protecting local ecosystems, treating animals humanely, and reducing waste.
Locations such as Mount Rushmore have even created on-site gardens to provide hyperlocal produce, and they compost waste to enrich the soil and avoid synthetic fertilizers. In fact, in 2021 Xanterra composted 23.5% of its total food waste in five national parks, preventing the vast majority of it from heading to landfills.
Meanwhile, at Glacier National Park, composted food waste nourishes the flower beds at Lake McDonald Lodge and Many Glacier Hotel—a lovely example of beautifying the environment while preserving it. What’s more, only 40 (out of nearly 700) Certified Green Restaurants in North America hold the coveted, highest 4-star certification. And five of them are Xanterra-operated restaurants in Yellowstone, Grand Canyon, and Mount Rushmore (whose Carvers’ Café is the second greenest restaurant in North America, according to the Green Restaurant Association)—thanks to on-site gardens, compostable tableware, water reduction, solar power, recycling, and more.
In a case of bigger is better, three of Windstar’s small, yacht-style cruise ships were audaciously lengthened and re-powered to improve their environmental performance on the high seas. Star Breeze, Star Legend, and Star Pride were each cut in two to insert a new middle section, which features more-efficient and less-polluting propulsion and generator engines, along with new cabins and restaurants.
This increased the capacity on each ship from 212 to 312 passengers, reducing fuel use and greenhouse gas emissions by about 20% per passenger nautical mile. The ventilation systems on the three ships were also upgraded to include HEPA filters and UV-C disinfecting lights to purify the air. Plus, onboard incinerators were removed to eliminate their air emissions. It was a stretch, but it was worth it.
In 2020, the Concession Building at Mount Rushmore, which includes a restaurant and gift shop, became the first building in all of the 428 National Park Service units to earn LEED Platinum certification for Operations and Maintenance. LEED—Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design—is the most widely used green building rating system in the world.
And then it becomes clear. You have not escaped at all. You have arrived.
