PICTURE PERFECT

Follow these pro tips to bring home your best photographs from any national park visit.

The scenery at any of our national parks will inspire the Ansel Adams in all of us. But capturing those shots — especially when including your traveling companions — can be tricky. “Framing and lighting are the key elements of taking great photographs,” says Irene Abdou of Irene Abdou Photography. A professional photographer in the Washington, D.C., area who likes to shoot families in outdoor settings, Abdou has some advice for shutterbugs to capture those album-worthy images.

Take Advantage of the Day’s Best Light

“In general, the best time to photograph in an open area is 1.5 hours before sunset and about 30 minutes after sunrise,” says Abdou. Called the “golden hour” by photographers, it’s when the sun is low in the sky and the light is indirect and soft, which is much more flattering than the harsh midday sun. Plan to be in some of the park’s most scenic areas at those times, and get there early enough so you don’t miss that magic moment.

Make Sure the Light Is Even

“You don’t want one person standing in the sun and one person standing in the shade. For a group photo, the light should be the same,” says Abdou. Move your subjects if necessary.

Use the Right Positioning for Scenic Shots

How to capture the classic photograph of your family in front of the Grand Canyon or another spectacular and mammoth park setting?

Position yourself and the kids carefully. To include the most scenery, don’t take that iconic shot of the Grand Canyon with your kids against the rim wall. “If you want a wide expanse of landscape in the background, you as the photographer and your family should be at a distance from the background. Position the people close to the camera. That way you get the scenery, but the people aren’t small.”

Focus on the Correct Spot for Action Shots

To shoot an image of something moving toward you

— a child on horseback, for example — focus on an area just in front of the moving object. “If the horse is walking toward you and you focus on the child, when you take the shot, the child is likely to be out of focus because the horse is moving,” says Abdou. “Focus on a point in front of the horse; then wait for the child to arrive there before you shoot.”

Look for Interesting Perspectives

Get away from the predictable group lineup by changing the perspective. “Get down low or go up high to shoot your group, and also take photographs of activities.” Snap your kids putting on life jackets, readying rods for fishing, or entering a hiking trail. This eliminates the standard police-lineup look of family photographs.

STEP RIGHT UP

Preparing for that active trip is easier than you think.

Trekking through Iceland or biking through the hills of Tuscany can seem daunting when imagined from a cozy seat on the couch. But in truth, preparing for an active vacation is easier than you think. “Our tours are geared for people in good physical shape, and most people are already ready,” says Tricia Dowhan, product director for Country Walkers. Dowhan has helped travelers with active getaways for 22 years, and she shares some of her best tips.

GO FOR A WALK .

Simply spend a little more time being active than usual, says Dowhan. “Incorporate some physical or aerobic activity into your routine every day.” Then, once you’re doing that consistently, add an incline. “If you have hills to walk, great. Otherwise just take the stairs instead of the elevator or try doing the StairMaster at the gym.” The better prepared you are, the more relaxed you’ll feel on the trip, she says.

BREAK IN THOSE BOOTS.

Low-profile walking boots or hiking shoes are recommended for Country Walkers itineraries. Give yourself six weeks with new shoes before your trip. “The last thing you want on the trip is blisters,” says Dowhan. For those embarking on a bike tour, expect four hours a day in the saddle. Gradually increase your training until you’re prepared to cycle 15-35 miles daily.

PACK LIGHT

Aim for carry-on luggage, suggests Dowhan. Although the itineraries for Country Walkers and VBT include porters, most travelers will have to manage their own luggage at the beginning and end of their tour. Utilize hotel laundry and save yourself the hassle of managing heavy bags. “I generally recommend laying out all of your gear and then taking out one-third of it.”

TAKE IT EASY.

Once on the trip, don’t be afraid to take a day off, advises Dowhan. The goal is to return with your batteries recharged, so if the hotel spa looks enticing, then take a day and enjoy it. Or maybe just spend the day poolside with a book. “I think especially for firsttime travelers with us, I encourage people to take some time off and don’t ever feel bad about it. It’s your vacation, after all.”

There’s nothing like heading out on an open trail in search of a memorable view. No matter the challenge, the reward can be an Instagram-worthy moment of a lifetime. Here are five trails — from an easy glacier walk to a strenuous uphill climb — where the payoff is a view to remember. So lace up your boots and take a hike.

Oahu,Hawaii

Diamond Head Trail

As iconic as its glittering namesake, Oahu’s Diamond Head Trail offers a steep but thrilling 0.8-mile climb to the 760-foot summit of the island’s volcanic landmark. The walk up the broad, saucer-shaped crater, which gains 560 feet from the crater floor, takes about 30-40 minutes one way and offers a glimpse into the geological and military history of the Diamond Head volcano. The trail was built in 1908 as part of Oahu’s coastal defense system. A dirt switchback path takes you quickly to the first lookout offering sublime ocean views. From there you ascend the first set of 74 stairs up to a dimly lit 225-foot-long tunnel and the bigger challenge of 99 steps. At the summit you’ll arrive at bunkers and yet more stairs leading to the breathtaking — literally and figuratively — viewing platform, where a huge 1917 lighthouse reminds you of the navigational importance of this spot.

THE PAYOFF Get your camera ready for showstopping 360-degree views from the top: sprawling Honolulu, the lush Koolau Mountains, the Koko Head Crater, and the Pacific Ocean stretching to the horizon, which may even include passing humpback whales in winter.

Snaefellsjökull Glacier Hike

One of the best glacier hikes in the world, the walk to the Snaefellsjökull (sneye-fells-yokle) Glacier takes you on a safe and easy journey through stunning scenery to explore a wonderland of ice sculptures, ridges, and deep crevasses. Snaefell Mountain, one of the most picturesque in Iceland, is a volcano rising up to 4,800 feet in the middle of the Snaefellsnes Peninsula, and is visible from more than 62 miles away. But its real fame derives from Jules Verne’s novel Journey to the Center of the Earth, in which the book’s heroes begin their adventures by entering one of the volcano’s lava tubes.

Best done in the early morning or late afternoon, when the light is ideal, the hike is fairly short at four miles round-trip but requires some exertion near the summit to climb a series of steep switchbacks. You’ll ascend a total of 1,278 feet, getting outstanding views all the way. On the lower slopes, you’ll find a bird’s-eye view of Golden Gate and Glen Creek canyons, with the Hoodoos and Mount Everts visible in the distance. You’ll pass a stand of dead trees with an otherworldly feel before you reach a large rock formation known as Cathedral Rock at about 1.4 miles. Be sure to snap a shot of Mammoth Hot Springs and

Mount Everts as they pass into view. Then come those challenging switchbacks covered with loose scree until you finally reach the backside of Bunsen and the weather station at the summit.

The Old West Meets 21st Century Luxury at The Oasis at Death Valley.

REIMAGINING A CLASSIC

Always a standard in luxury, The Oasis at Death Valley has provided guests the ultimate desert experience for more than 90 years.

In 1907, an April Fool’s Day joke sarcastically beckoned travelers to Death Valley, claiming the region “has all the advantages of hell without the inconveniences.”

But when the luxuriously appointed 12-room Furnace Creek Inn opened in 1927, wealthy travelers instantly took to this oasis, now reborn as The Inn at Death Valley. Why bother building a hotel in such an isolated and seemingly inhospitable spot?

The origins of this desert icon encompass the iconography of the Wild West and good oldfashioned American ingenuity.

ORIGINS OF A DESERT ICON

When borax mining by the Pacific Coast Borax Co. began to decline in the early 1900s, the two railroads that depended on the industry needed to find new customers.

So the Tonopah and Tidewater Railroad and the Death Valley Railroad turned to tourism for the solution and designed a well-appointed resort they hoped would attract wealthy travelers.

The 12-room Furnace Creek Inn opened its Mission-style doors on February 1, 1927. Built by local Paiute and Shoshone tribe members, who worked on-site making adobe bricks, the building’s construction took only a year. Designed to blend with the landscape, featuring red-tile roofs and walls made of desert stone, The Inn embodied the history of the Old West and evoked

California’s Spanish past. An additional 10 rooms were added in 1928, and with a pool fed by a nearby spring, scores of palm trees, and gorgeous tennis courts, the Furnace Creek Inn felt like an oasis straight from a Hollywood film.

However, the owners soon discovered that luxury travelers preferred the convenience of their personal cars rather than train travel, and the Death Valley Railroad was officially abandoned in 1930.

The original inn design by famed Los Angeles architects Albert C. Martin and Daniel Hull intentionally placed the structure at the mouth of the Furnace Creek Wash. Its red-tile exterior seemingly built into the hillside, Martin and Hull smartly married landscape with luxury in their U-shaped structure.

DESERT DREAM

Rather than obscure The Inn’s history, the recent renovations have helped to bring out more of its traditional character. In the lobby, a combination of terra cotta and decorative tile adds to the Spanish atmosphere, while classic American West artwork links The Inn to its frontier past. In the dining room, a beamed ceiling and newly installed dark plank-wood floor, as well as more Western-themed art, create a setting of rustic elegance.

It’s easy to immerse yourself in the ambiance of the Old West in other ways, too: Saddle up for a trail ride to spot roadrunners, coyotes, bobcats, and jackrabbits. Hike the breathtaking terrain to discover ghost towns and abandoned mining pits. Marvel at the genuine desert oasis with towering date palms and a spring-fed pool. Visit a museum that documents the region’s mining past. And experience a classic Western atmosphere with stables, wagon rides, and real cowboy spirit.

Photographers love to shoot this surreal scene. It’s like a soft blanket has been stuffed into every curve and fold of the Grand Canyon.”
