THE ART OF HOME RENOVATION
Welcome back dear readers, to another issue of Alive Magazine! This month we focus on the topic of ‘Style’.
Curiously the first thing that came to my mind when I heard the word was fashion, or more culturally accurate for my Melbourne friends in the industry; ‘fashun’. As I gave it more time to percolate, I realised that this topic is much broader than I initially thought.
Being a word nerd, I checked the dictionary definition. There were several but two stood out as the most common and I shared a little, “of course”, moment with myself. Style can be defined as both a noun and a verb.
As a noun; “A distinctive appearance, typically determined by the principles according to which something is designed.”
As a verb; “Design or make in a particular form.”
The couple I got to interview this month, and whom I shall introduce you to very shortly, embody both definitions of the word.
In fact, you could go so far as to say that they have a really unique style to the way that they style.
I constantly find it intriguing when interviewing new people, how often, clearly creative, artistic people fail to see these traits in themselves. More on that later.
Allow me to introduce you to local Wide Bay residents Jaime and Dave Hillhouse, a couple who seemingly fell into the world of home renovation and took it to the next level with their immaculate focus on style.
We meet at their current residence/project “Lagos” in Urraween. Each of their properties have a distinct theme that is reflected throughout in intricate detail. The theme for Lagos is neatly summed up in one word— ‘Mediterranean’.
Mentioning their first completed project in Urangan, “Bay Beach House”, Jaime shares; “Our whole goal with the first one was to bring something different to the bay. We always like trying to think outside the box.”
I noticed quickly that the way they went about the projects, the style of which, you might say, was equally if not more important than the ‘what’ they did.
She continues, “We start with a big item and that drives our vision for the rest of the house.”
I ask how they decide on what that item is and I notice the answer is quite similar to how any number of artists might answer;
“It’s a feeling thing. The important thing with style is to go with your instincts.”
For Lagos, the big item is the arched shape of the entrance above the front door. Covered in a striking white paint, it gives off imagery akin to what you may find on the cliff-sides of Greece.
I notice another familiar feature and I ask if that is in fact an olive tree.
“Yep, we got that from an olive farm. It’ll still produce olives if you take care of it. We actually had to get it lifted in with a crane.”
Dave again, adds context to the ‘style at all cost’ approach to their work.
As the tour and the discussion continue, I feel it necessary to focus now, back on the Bay Beach House (BBH), as it was our couples first full renovation.
This property was also the one that created Jaime and Dave a solid following of home-renovation enthusiasts on Instagram. They share with me that they had no intentions of it growing so rapidly or to the extent that it has. They simply wanted to document their own journey and have a space to see the progress.
BBH was also the first location for the couples somewhat unusual style of renovation. Guided by circumstance during the Covid era, they ended up living in the house during the process.
They speak into how important that turned out to be as they realised how much more of an intimate feel they got for the home. Details like where the sun will be and when and what that means for the lighting come up.
Aesthetically the theme they went for was based on the beautiful Byron Bay area. Dave added a note on the intention for the layout of the property;
“For us it was, coming home and feeling like we’re on holidays.”
They share proudly (and rightfully so) that they did all of the work on the house themselves. One of the reasons for doing so was budget related and I found it quite impressive to hear they actually never took out a loan for it.
I wondered if Dave had always been so handy.
“Not at all actually. Jaime used to call me dodgy Dave!”
Dave always had an interest in landscaping from his childhood and is fantastic at seeing the vision for spaces.
“He’s the visionary for sure.”
Jaime goes on to explain the synergistic nature of their dynamic where she excels at knowing what works or not visually.
I enjoy the way they explain the process and how their respective skill sets yin-yang (used as a verb) perfectly.
“The styling and the furnishing is what creates the emotional connection. If it’s a beautiful house but it’s not colour matched or styled correctly, I don’t get that emotional feeling.”
Putting a full stop on her statement Dave adds;
“And that’s the difference between a house and a home.”
Once the theme is decided and the first big item presents itself, the gardens are the first thing to take form.
“We like to do the landscaping first because it sets the tone for the property and it’s also the part that needs the biggest machinery.”
Function is just as important as form and the live-in approach lends perfectly to perfecting this.
BBH is able to fully open to allow for that beachside, open air feel, yet can also be completely sealed as just one of many examples.
Jaime came into her own with the interior and the furnishing. Each direction you look makes sense and feels just right. The perfect balance of uniquity and uniformity.
With so much work, style, time, resources and passion poured into the piece of ‘Liveable Art’ it makes sense it was highly emotional when it came time to sell.
Of course the original intention all along, it was still a bittersweet time for the family, especially their two children who spent most of their childhood in the home.
Let’s return now to Lagos, as we sit on the elegant oversized timber table demanding attention in the open plan dining area.
We wind up the conversation and I still find it bizarre that they are both full time in the education industry. As I question what is in the future Jaime replies almost as a thought experiment;
“We both have long service leave owing. I wonder what we could do if we went full time into this for a while?”
I wonder this also as so do almost twenty thousand fans online. I guess we all better watch this space!
Upon reflection I see now that style is so much more than I had first thought. Style is feeling and style is art. Style can also be a lifestyle.
For some, like my new friends Jaime and Dave, style is even more than that—for them, style is home.

STYLE IS IN YOUR FABRIC
You can be old, young, plain, pretty, big or small but if you know your shape, have good shoes and a great haircut Tania Hoult says you can pull off just about any style.
The larger than life 55-year-old is known for her effortless chic style and big personality which has no doubt been sprinkled into the homes of Fraser Coast residents who have shopped in her local businesses over the years.
Not to mention friends and family who often rely on the style guru for fashion advice on what looks good because - let’s be honest – Tania certainly isn’t backward in coming forward.
I just loved her edgy blond short style cut and her colourful ELK brand top and skirt, all accentuated by a beautiful mix of necklaces, bangles and earrings.
“Style isn’t something you can just pin down, it’s in your fabric,” Tania said.
“A cool lady I know once said to me, ‘I’m not pretty and I’ve never been pretty, but I think one has to carry on as if you are’, and I think that’s so true.
“Don’t try too hard, keep anything fake within the realms of possibility or you’re not fooling anyone.
“If people ask for my advice I will give it. I always say to do something unexpected and think outside the box otherwise you tend to get a bit outdated.”
The entrepreneur and her husband moved to Hervey Bay from Victoria when she was 21 and invested in an ice-cream shop on the Esplanade in Torquay where she stayed put for two-and-a-half years. Baby number one was a permanent fixture at the shop but once she could walk it was time to sell.
Three more babies followed, swiftly.
Once the youngest was off to preschool it was time for another challenge so a floristry traineeship was completed.
It was while attending the Gift fair with her friend
and boss from the florist that Pandanus Homeware and Gifts was hatched.
Changing Ocean Waves preloved clothing store on the Esplanade, located next to what was then O’Reilly’s Pizza Parlour, into a destination for beautiful gifts, jewellery, and soft furnishing.
Whatever took her fancy.
The range of unique items Tania sourced is sure to have brought the same warmth, personality and a lived-in feel to many locals homes just as it has her aged Queenslander home in Sunshine Acres.
The same kind of high-quality fashion, homewares, shoes and accessories could be found in Tania’s next business venture, The Sticky Fig Café at Fraser Shores.
For eight years the café side served up some sensational food and drinks, but it was Tania’s stylish and colourful paintings, shoes, jewellery and so much more that always caught the attention of shoppers.
“That side of the shop was definitely what I enjoyed most.”
Tania no longer owns these stores but the eclectic mix of furnishings, paintings, and homewares around her home are a reminder of her illustrious time in business.
She now spends most of her time working inside and out on the acreage property they bought in January and spending time with her precious grandchildren.
“For all my love of ‘things’ what comes first is my family, of course.”
Owning an old Queenslander has always been on Tania’s bucket list and now that the dream has come true; she has spent endless hours using her “edgy nostalgic” flair to make the place feel like home.
Lychee Divine Skin Care
The only manufacturer of Lychee Polyphenol outside China. A hero ingredient known for it’s anti-ageing free radical properties.
The new house was the missing link to Tania’s perfect lifestyle with the previous beautiful “soulless box” missing the mark in what she really wanted out of a home.
She wanted a place where all her antique, vintage and pre-loved furnishings given to her and collected over the years would look right at home.
“I want it to feel inviting and homely. You should be able to walk into your home and go, yep, that’s my house.
“This house was meant to be. I’ve been collecting all this stuff for so long and now I finally have a place to put it.”
The home is full of restored furniture, trinkets from opshops, a lounge from the tip shop, and a circus themed bedroom for the grandkids with flag bunting Tania handmade and red and white striped curtains.
Colourful paintings adorn the walls, some purchased from op shops and some painted by many local artists.
Plus, lots of repurposed items around the yard bought from Facebook marketplace.
“I don’t really like anything new, and what I like that’s new is exorbitantly expensive.
“By the time I put all the old stuff in the house there wasn’t room for anything new anyway.”
Tania insists she’s not a hoarder just a keeper of super cool stuff.
“I’m a collector rather than hoarder… it’s not hoarding if your shits cool,” she said with a laugh.
“You want your home to reflect you because you can’t be anyone else.”
When it comes to any kind of fashion and styling, Tania’s main piece of advice is this.
“Just wear what suits you and listen to your mother.
“If your mother says you shouldn’t be wearing that than you probably shouldn’t be wearing that. But if your mum’s a bit daggy, call me.”
“Know your best features and highlight those, have fun, life’s is too short to waste on chasing perfection, it doesn’t exist.”

HATCHING A FAMILY A
t the start of the Urangan Pier, you’ll find a special little shop that holds a dear place not just in my heart, but in the hearts of many in our community. Originally built 80 years ago as a butcher shop, it has withstood the test of time, now an icon of the bay despite its small size.
Though it has received numerous coats of paint over the years, the exterior remains largely unchanged.
Inside, the shop has housed many small businesses. Countless people have stepped through its doors, and today, those 80-year-old doors still open to welcome locals and visitors alike. If only those doors could talk!
My personal connection to this special shop began the day I arrived in Hervey Bay nearly 20 years ago. Arriving in our sleepy seaside town, I followed my instincts and guided my GPS-less Kombi toward the beach, exploring our breathtaking Esplanade until I could go no further. Reaching the pier car park, I pulled in to get my bearings and found myself parked across from a small shop, at the time known as the Juice Shack. Funky music echoed from its doors, and it was at that moment I knew I had found a place to call home. A few months later, I found myself behind the counter, making sandwiches and juices for the construction workers busily building what is now known as the Oaks Resort. Since then, the shop I first knew as the Juice Shack has changed hands and faces a few more times.
Six years ago, Nathalie Albouze recognised the potential of this little shop and took over the reins. Now called HATCH- Design and Creative Store, this charming shop may seem small from the outside, but inside it holds a surprisingly large collection of unique treasures, all crafted by local talents. It also serves as a much-needed spot for coffee lovers to get their caffeine fix.
These days, you’ll often find Nat behind the coffee machine, likely chatting with whoever walks into the store. Originally from Dubbo, she brings extensive hospitality experience and a flair for style—it seems only natural that her path led her to open a shop like Hatch. “My parents always had businesses in hospitality—restaurants, motels, cafes, that kind of thing. Everyone I know
seems to have a small business,” she explains.
A mother of two teenagers, Nat moved to Hervey Bay eight years ago to be closer to her extended family. Like many of us, she was seeking a quiet sea change, with a focus on achieving a better work-life balance. She saw the chance to create that balance with Hatch—a business that would allow her to work for herself while still having the flexibility to be there for her kids.
“When I worked as a graphic designer for a printing company, I had very limited flexibility. With my kids being active in sports, music, and dance, I wasn’t able to drive them around. When I opened Hatch, I was still working remotely for a team in Adelaide, but eventually, I decided to let go of the safety net and jump in fully. I got a loan and began asking if anyone wanted to rent space. Dimattina sponsored me with a coffee machine, so the initial cost wasn’t too high.”
Nat’s skills as a graphic designer have served her well at Hatch. Her trained eye for detail and colour is just one of the many talents that have helped her little shop grow and thrive. She admits that, before Hatch, she had never worked in retail, but her natural creative flair for merchandising ensures that the shop pops with colour and draws in anyone passing by to explore its exciting displays of unique merchandise.
Nat explains, “It’s more of a destination for people. Obviously, the locals love their coffee, but many visitors see the gallery and say, ‘Oh, let’s grab a coffee and meander around.’”
Her dream of creating a hub for local creatives to sell their wares has flourished. The shelves are packed full with all sorts of interesting handmade and original goodies—from baby clothes and locally made perfume to stunning resin chopping boards, beautiful leather goods, paintings and photography—every available space is filled with a bounty to explore.
As anyone who has stepped through its doors will tell you, it may be a small shop, but to see it all, you’ll need time to peruse the shelves at least three times—or just one coffee. “Over time, I’ve had up to 140 different creators. At any given moment, there are about 30 artists on display,” Nat says.
As a small business owner, Nat understands the importance of supporting our local community, which has now become her mantra. Everything she sells is created locally, with sustainability at the forefront of her mind—right down to the bottled water.
“I really wanted to eliminate all the plastic water bottles, so I looked into an Australian company called Calm and Stormy. Their bottles are aluminium, which means you can reuse and recycle them till the cows come home. They also offer fresh low-sugar juice and mineral water.” You’ll find the drinks in a cabinet alongside delicious handmade food for those feeling peckish.
At Hatch, creators can rent shelves or sell on consignment, and Nat ensures that all agreements are mutually beneficial. Hatch feels like one big creative family, offering budding artists a chance to start out and gain confidence in showcasing their work.
“When creatives come in, they often have a limited amount of stock. I tell them we’re not Myers. We have foot traffic, but not to that extreme, so they’ll have time to create and sell simultaneously. I have people who live up the road and down the road.
Some send everything to me by post. There’s a lot of communication; I make sure they feel taken care of,” Nat explains.
By giving new creators access to a small space to display their items, Nat provides them with a chance to start out without needing a large amount of stock. Her presence in the shop ensures that she can give direct feedback to the artists, which they might not typically receive elsewhere. She fosters a supportive environment that allows for growth and diversity. As is often the case with businesses created from the heart, the law of attraction runs strong in this little store. “Most of the time, the artists find me. It’s a funny thing about this space—when gaps appear on the shelves or an artist moves on, I’ll start looking around, but then someone usually walks in the door,” Nat explains.
Nat shares a heartwarming story about a woman whose husband suddenly left her. Struggling with the grief of the separation, the woman turned to crafting as a means to improve her mental health. Upon hearing her story, Nat offered to sell the creations, helping her regain a sense of purpose during those difficult times. It’s evident that Nat has a strong connection with everyone who supports her dream— from the creatives to the customers—and in return, they support her as well.
“This shop is like your living room; you’re chatting with people all the time. The community has been incredibly supportive over the years, helping out with painting doors, electrical work, and plumbing. It feels like a family, and it shows that you don’t need a huge budget for a business to thrive.”
So, wherever you find yourself in the days to come, be sure to make time to venture down to the Urangan Pier and visit this special little store. With the silly season approaching, we once again have the opportunity to vote with our wallets. Will you choose to support our local community this Christmas? The Hatch family certainly hopes so!

LIZZIE LEARNS TO... ARRANGE FLOWERS
There’s something truly magical about walking into a room and being greeted by a stunning floral arrangement.
The way it can instantly lift your spirits, add a pop of colour to an otherwise drab space, or simply make you pause for a moment to appreciate nature’s beauty.
For as long as I can remember, Bloomers Florists and Gifts has been my go-to purveyor of these little pockets of joy, delivering high-quality, unique signature blooms that unquestionably brighten up homes all across the Fraser Coast (including mine, of course!).
But what goes on behind the scenes to create these masterpieces?
How do florists transform a jumble of stems and petals into something so… captivating?
This month, I had the absolute privilege of stepping behind the counter at Bloomers to learn the art of flower arranging from the expert herself, owner Leeanne Jasse.
Now, I must confess, while I’ve always loved flowers and admired how they can transform a space, I wouldn’t know the first thing about making a stylish arrangement.
I may be a creative, but that creativity ends at writing - when it comes to design and style, I tend to adopt a ‘more is more’ approach, which inevitably turns out to be complete chaos.
So to learn how to arrange flowers ‘properly’ was not just an honour, but a much-needed lesson in restraint and artistry.
As I arrived at Bloomers’ new location (just down the road from the old store, but oh my, So. Much. Bigger!), I was greeted by the familiar sight of colourful blooms and gentle fragrances.
We started with the basics - preparing the flowers for their new home in the vase.
Next came the foundation of our arrangement - the greenery. Leeanne guided me as we arranged the leaves in a cascading order, tallest at the back and tapering downwards.
We focused on balance and contrast, as well as choosing flowers and greenery that would last as long as possible.
It’s this attention to longevity that sets Bloomers apart - their bunches are renowned for lasting an incredibly long time, a testament to the quality of their blooms and the skill of their arrangement of them.
With our leafy canvas in place, it was time to add some colour. Leeanne presented me with a bunch of disbud chrysanthemums, wrapped protectively in paper. As we carefully removed the wrapping, I was struck by the delicate petals and gentle pink colour. For someone who typically gravitates towards bold, loud colours, I found myself utterly captivated by the subtle beauty of these blooms. It was a moment of revelation - perhaps there was more to this ‘less is more’ approach than I’d given credit for!
As we continued to build our arrangement, adding in some special beehive and torch gingers, I couldn’t help but marvel at the variety of flowers at our disposal.
Leeanne explained that she has the pleasure of sourcing flowers from all over the country to make sure there is always a diverse and high-quality selection on hand.
This also means they can accommodate just about any request for custom arrangements, whether it’s for a specific colour scheme, a particular bloom, or a unique style.
It was at this point disaster struck - in my enthusiasm to place the torch ginger ‘just so’, I managed to destroy one of our precious chrysanthemums.
**The shame!**
To their credit, Leeanne and her team assured me that this was neither the first nor the last casualty of floristry.
Yet… I remain unconvinced.
Freshest flowers in the
MON TO FRI 7:30AM – 5:30PM SATURDAY 7:30AM – 2:00PM
Chances are high they were kind enough to simply be sparing my feelings, but hey, I’m choosing to believe ‘it happens to us all’!!
As we added the final pieces of greenery to fill in the gaps, Leeanne stepped back, encouraging me to do the same.
She invited me to take in the full view of our creation.
I was utterly amazed.
What had started as a random assortment of stems and blooms had been transformed into a breathtaking arrangement.
Looking at our creation, several realisations struck me.
Firstly, no two bunches are ever the same, thanks to the unique qualities of each individual leaf, stem and flower.
Secondly, there is a huge amount of artistry and experience involved in this craft.
Watching Leeanne work was like watching a painter at their easel or a sculptor with their clay.
Floristry, I realised, is a little bit like jazz, but for nature - there are rules and structures, but within those, there’s room for improvisation and personal flair.
What impressed me most was the versatility of the arrangement we’d created.
Leeanne explained that this style would be just as suitable in a home entranceway as in a corporate setting.
It’s this adaptability that has made Bloomers such a cornerstone of our community, serving both businesses and individuals with equal poise.
As our session drew to a close, I found myself reluctant to leave.
The energy in the shop, the camaraderie between Leeanne, Nekeeta and the entire Bloomers team, is always infectious.
It’s clear that this fabulous workplace is more than ‘just a business’ - it’s a wonderfully tight-knit unit, a family bound together by their shared satisfaction from bringing beauty into people’s lives.
As I reluctantly bid farewell to Leeanne and her team, knowing with great satisfaction that these spectacular blooms were going to a very deserving home (happy 80th birthday Rosemary!), I couldn’t help but reflect on the role Bloomers plays in our community.
For years, they’ve been there for our celebrations, our condolences, our declarations of love and our expressions of gratitude.
They’ve added colour to our homes and offices, brought smiles to countless faces, and contributed to the vibrant tapestry of our local business community.
In learning to arrange flowers, I gained so much more than a new skill.
I gained a deeper appreciation for the art of floristry, for the dedication and passion that goes into every bunch.
And perhaps most importantly, I gained a reminder of the power of beauty to lift our spirits and connect us to one another.
So, the next time you’re in need of a little pick-me-up, or you want to bring a smile to someone’s face, why not pop into Bloomers?
Who knows, you might just discover your own hidden talent for flower arranging.
And if not, well, you can rest assured that you’re in the very best of hands with Leeanne and her wonderful team.
With deepest thanks and gratitude to Leeanne and her incredible team for welcoming us into their brand new store! You can drop into Bloomers Florists and Gifts at Shop 4 / 59 Torquay Road (Corner Neils Street) Monday to Saturday, or order online at floristherveybay.com any time.

1. What first got you into music? And who inspired you to make music?
My family would say I sung before I could talk, my grandma who recently passed used to sit and teach me the piano and how to sing opera since I was little. She inspired me to start music. I had quite the career when I was younger having released my first cd at 11, I recorded my first ep at 14 but life took a different turn for me at 16 and I became a mum and I took the next 12 years off music publicly to open a business to support my young family and only picked up the guitar again 3 years ago.
2. What is it about music that makes you feel passionate?
Music is its own universal language. It’s a beautifully delicate way of expressing ourselves and connecting with others where words cannot. Music got me through some of the darkest times of my life and also some of the happiest.
3. What is the best piece of advice another musician has ever given to you?
The best advice I’ve ever been given is, to always stay true to your authentic self, write from the heart and your music will naturally find where it’s meant to be.
4. Who’s your dream musician to collaborate with and why?
Oh this one is easy. Stevie Nicks! Gosh, she has always been an inspiration to me - a force to be reckoned with and it would be a dream come true to collaborate on a song with her or even just share the same stage. I love her so much I even incorporated her into one of my songs I wrote in 2021.
5. Do you write your own music? Where can we find your music?
Yes I do, I have a catalogue of original music I am yet to have produced. I do have some of them on social media (Facebook & Instagram) but hopefully will have some music on Spotify within the next couple of months. www.facebook.com/marahleighmusic

By the time you read this, Paolo Esposito, namesake and founder of Paolo’s Pizza Bar, will have zoomed off to Mexico to start the next chapter of his life.
And while Paolo may have moved on to new adventures, his legacy remains. What he’s leaving behind - has left behind - is the product of 16 years of dedication, craftsmanship and commitment to quality Italian cuisine, that has become a Fraser Coast institution.
Fret not dear reader, this may seem like an ending, but in fact the epic tale of Paolo’s is really only just beginning, thanks to new owners and passionate foodies, Sebastien and Isabelle.
Chances are, if you’ve dropped into Paolo’s over the last few years, you’ve already encountered head chef and co-owner Sebastien’s signature interpretation of traditional Napoletana cuisine with flashes of the contemporary sprinkled throughout.
Having enjoyed life back-of-house in restaurants all over Australia and beyond, Sebastien and partner, Isabelle decided that the Hervey Bay life was the life for them and their growing family way back in 2019.
As fate would have it, Paolo’s proved to be the perfect backdrop for Sebastien to express his love for food, and further cement a visit to the restaurant as a must-do experience for locals and visitors alike.
And to let you in on a little secret…
You may not even have realised it, but tiny tweaks and embellishments have been creeping in (including tasty little pillows of handmade gnocchi) as the transition to new ownership has crept closer.
In fact, it has been months now since Paolo had even stepped into the kitchen in a cooking capacity, opting to give Sebastien complete creative freedom to set the tone for the future.
And what a bright future we can enjoy.
Patrons of Paolo’s can expect the same standards of quality and flavour as always with some delectable new additions:
• ‘Lievito de madre’ (sourdough) pizza basesmade from a signature sourdough starter named ‘Ozzy’ designed to be easily digested and always enjoyed
• Lazy weekend brunches are expected to become a Fraser Coast staple experience, with a new brunch menu including X and Y recently released to an enthusiastic reception
• Additional vegan offerings that honour traditional flavours and techniques whilst embracing the tastes and needs of all comers
• A tantalising expansion of the dessert menu, including ‘loaded’ Zeppole, so make sure you come ravenous and save plenty of room for these sweet morsels!
While there is plenty of ‘newness’ to celebrate, the essence of Paolo’s will always remain constant. The emphasis on honouring flavour with simplicity, the tight-knit family of staff members (special mention to Seppe, pizza chef extraordinaire for the last eight years), the unmistakable bustling atmosphere of one of the most popular spots on the Fraser Coastall these beloved elements will remain the beating heart of Paolo’s Pizza Bar.
These cherished traditions, combined with Sebastien and Isabelle’s fresh vision, ensure that Paolo’s will continue to be a cornerstone of the Fraser Coast’s culinary landscape for years to come.
THE BEAUTY THAT IS THRIFTING
It’s a uniquely personal thing - stylesubjective, experimental, and constantly evolving with a myriad of outlets for expression. Style, I think, is in your DNA. It speaks to originality and courage. To truly know one’s authentic style, we must first find ourselves. Know who you are, then work at it - I dress, therefore I am.
For me, thrift shops and pre-loved clothing stores are among my happy places. The melting pot of fabrics, textures, colours, forms, and ideas offers an endless palette of opportunity and inspiration, waiting to be explored in the moment.
As much as I’d love to say my passion for thrift shopping stemmed from pure altruism - “I’m saving the planet, you know... closing the loop, reducing landfill!” - in truth, it’s more about having Zimmermann tastes on a Zara budget and a strong aversion to the generic.
Thrift and charity stores are treasure troves of clothing, accessories, trinkets, and all manner of flotsam and jetsam. Glorious finds you won’t encounter anywhere else, each with a story from another era, another place, and another life.
Not a week goes by that I don’t find myself rifling through clothes racks like a bowerbird hunting for shiny treasures and hidden gems that I can give a loving new home to. There’s joy in that. Without a preconceived idea of what I’m looking for, the exciting challenge of finding a piece out of context and giving it space to make sense within my own style feels like pure self-expression. You have no glossy magazine or retail assistant “recommending” you pieces for your capsule wardrobe or this season’s spring catalogue trends…. it’s entirely between you and your little pre-loved piece to tell your story.
Thrift stores can push the boundaries of your style in the best way. You can either dip a toe outside your comfort zone or dive right in. Mixing

and matching becomes a thrill! Let’s pair this 1950s wasp-waist full circle skirt with a fabulous 1960s patent leather belt, a vintage (2010!) oversized T-shirt, and some white trainers from Zara’s 2024 winter collection - bam! Style, baby!
Thrifting also makes it easier to achieve a realistic budget. When compared with high street prices, pre-loved items allow you to take home a bag full of finds and experiment with what feels right, while still encouraging you to push the boundaries - because you make your own style.
Here are my top five tips for thrift shopping:
1. Check the brand names – For example, an Oroton piece is more likely to last and be of higher quality than a Zara or Anko (Kmart) item.
2. Choose store locations wisely – Shops in affluent areas or higher socio-economic zones are more likely to carry big-brand names and possibly better quality pieces.
3. Check the tag – If the tag is in good condition (not faded or torn), it’s likely the piece hasn’t been over-washed or worn too much.
4. Inspect seams – Gently pull seams apart to ensure they’re sewn well, with no missing stitches.
5. Be open-minded – Often, when you stop searching for something specific, the perfect piece finds you.

PINNACLE OF STYLE
Of all the iconic fashion brands in the world, Zimmerman stands out as the most famous Australian export. It is a brand I love for its sophisticated femininity, clever colour combinations and delicate original prints. The luxury label was founded by sisters Nicky and Simone Zimmermann in 1991. To date, they have over 56 stores in both Australia and globally, including throughout the United States, United Kingdom, Europe and China. It is astonishingly successful. Valued at $1.5 - $1.75 Billion, it represents the highest-ever valuation of an Australian fashion brand.
Yet they began from humble beginnings. Their parents, Joan and Erich, owned a spray-painting and smash repairs shop. Joan sewed her own clothes, and Simone and Nicky’s, too. The beach was a constant; on weekends, they swam at Cronulla, holidays were spent at Surfers Paradise. It was during those years that their passion for fashion design developed.
So this month, in tribute to this iconic brand, we have chosen a collection of our most opulent fashion pieces, from casual to the most feminine evening wear.
1. Multi-stripe sequinned cross-over crop top over pure silk sleeveless beige maxi-dress with minimalist crystal adjustable necklace.
2. Palest pink multi-layered pure silk sleeveless maxi-dress with dusky pink Italian fabric waterfall jacket and freshwater pearl necklace.
3. White 100% cotton multi-layer flouncy maxi-dress worn under beige sumptuous sequinned classic jacket and a necklace with gold and silver ornaments.
4. Dark grey Italian relaxed pants featuring a leopard print in gold, teamed with 100% embroidered cotton shirt, angora blend cardigan, multi-layer freshwater pearl and rose gold necklaces.
5. Finest cotton gauze frilled sleeve longer line shirt with pin stripe leaf green linen resort pants, wide leather belt, layers of semi-precious stone necklaces.

OSTYLE CRISIS
nce upon a time, in a land dotted with cargo shorts and oversized Hawaiian shirts, I lived in blissful ignorance of fashion. To say I had missed the style boat would imply there was even such a thing—instead, it was more like a rickety old bus that had broken down somewhere around 1997. Last Saturday, while sipping coffee and scrolling through Instagram, I had an epiphany: it was time to understand style.
Armed with nothing but a credit card and a misplaced sense of confidence, I set off on a journey of self-discovery at my local mall. My first stop (mistake), was a boutique aimed at tall skinny men, populated by beard wearing hipsters. As I entered, the warm glow of trendy lighting did little to calm my nerves, while the wafts of organic cotton clothing and citrus based aftershave only emphasised how out of place I was.
One of the hipsters looked up from his Mens Health magazine. “Can I help you with something?” He was immaculately groomed with a long beard and pomaded hair that defied gravity.
“Uh, I’m looking to... you know... style up,” I declared,
trying to sound cooler than a polar bear on an iceberg.
“Great! What’s your vibe?” he grinned, clearly unbothered by my thongs and distinctly non-trendy dad bod.
“What’s a vibe? Is that…? Is that like a flavor?” I stammered, suddenly aware I was swimming alone in a deep ocean. He blinked at me, probably wondering how long I’d been living as a fashion hermit.
After several failed attempts to grasp various ‘vibes’— which apparently involved a lot of layers of linen and expensive shirts with inexplicably rolled-up sleeves—I decided to take matters into my own hands. I snagged a pair of skinny jeans, a leather jacket, and a scarf that looked like it belonged to a flamboyant 70’s singer. “If I can’t be stylish, at least I can look like I’m in a David Bowie tribute band!” I thought.
The following weekend, I was entertaining guests for lunch. Following their arrival, I strutted into my kitchen, proudly decked out in my new ensemble, only to be met with bemused looks from my so-called friends.
“Mate, are you… going to a concert?” The rudest one asked, mouth agape.
“Did you take a detour on the way back from the 90’s?”, another ex-friend piped up, “It looks more like you’re part of a cheesy, ‘90s boy band.”
With the raucous laughter of my friends echoing around me, I stood there, a garish beacon of a midlife crisis I didn’t even know I was having, it became abundantly clear that style is an undefined concept that everyone seems to recognise, but few emulate. I also realised that I was cruelly taken advantage of by uncaring hipsters.
Retreating to my well-loved Hawaiian shirt and cargo shorts, I was struck that the reality of style is that everyone has their own version of it. I’ve decided to stick with what makes me happy; oh, and I’ve decided to grow a beard ...
ALBUM OF THE MONTH
‘Belladonna’ by Stevie Nicks
Stevie Nicks’ first solo album, “Belladonna,” released in 1981, marks a compelling blend of rock, pop, and mysticism that showcases her iconic voice and lyrical maturity. Opening with the haunting “Edge of Seventeen,” the album captivates listeners with its driving beat underscoring themes of resilience, love and renewal.
Collaboration with legends such as Don Henley enriches the album, particularly on the duet “Leather and Lace,” which highlights their harmonious interplay and the simplicity of love. Nicks’ lyricism shines through in tracks like “How Still My Love,” where her poetic imagery evokes longing and vulnerability.
The album’s production values allow Nicks’ emotive vocals to shine, while varied instrumentation across songs such as “Nightbird” and “The Highwayman” highlight her musical versatility.
At its core, “Belladonna” is an intimate journey that resonates with its listeners, exploring themes of empowerment, love, and sorrow. More than just a debut, the album solidifies Stevie Nicks’ status as a powerful solo artist. With its timeless expressions of artistry and emotion, “Belladonna” remains an essential listen.

WHERE STYLE MEETS STRATEGY
Why High- End Property Styling is the Smart Choice for the Time-Poor, Interstate Seller?
When it comes to selling an Investment property from afar, a polished and professional styling presentation is the key. For the busy business owner, corporate client, or real estate portfolio expert, balancing high- level demands with the need to maximize their property’s potential, high end styling offers an edge that can make all the difference.
1. First Impressions Last : Enhanced Appeal for Online Buyers
In today’s market, buyers are making their first decisions with a swipe or a click. A beautifully styled property captures their attention immediately, standing out in a sea of listings. High-end styling turns digital views into serious inquiries. For interstate sellers, this means your property shines online, even when you’re not there to present your property.
2. Style Equals Value : Increased Property Value
Luxurious styling isn’t just about pretty pictures : it’s about elevating perception. When a potential buyer sees a space thoughtfully designed with high-end touches, they see a property that’s worth investing in. This boost in perceived value can lead to a higher sale price, appealing directly to clients who understand that sometimes, the details make all the difference.
3. Move Quickly, Sell Faster : Reduced Time on Market
Time is Money, especially for the seller with a demanding schedule. Properties that are impeccably styled don’t just look better- they sell faster. That means less time on the market, less back - and forth, and a quicker path to closing the deal. For clients who prefer a streamlined process, this is a game - changer.
4. No Hassle, Just Results : Minimal Effort for the seller
Let’s face it - styling a property is time - consuming, and your time is better spent focusing on what matters most to you. High-end styling services take care of everything, from selecting designer furniture to perfecting the layout. This is the definition of a turnkey solution, allowing you to stay hands - off while still ensuring your property presents at its absolute best.
5. Reach Beyond Borders : Enhanced Marketability Across Locations

STRANGE ENCOUNTERS
After several months of discussing the deeper mysteries of life, such as our soul’s purpose and life after death, this month I’m sharing some of the unusual and perhaps even spooky things I’ve encountered on my spiritual journey.
People who know me understand that I’m reluctant to believe anything unless it happens to me, or I hear it from a very trusted source. My rational brain is alive and well. However, I will not be disappointed if some readers shake their head in disbelief at what I’m about to describe. Neverthe-less, hand on my heart – it’s true.
Let’s start with the old parlour trick of tabletipping. I say ‘old parlour trick’ because table tipping was a popular form of entertainment in England, especially in the late 1800s and early 1900s. Mediumship and psychic phenomena drew large crowds in concert halls, and many mystical seekers held weekly spiritual circles in their own homes (as I have for about 15 years).
Although I’d heard of table tipping before studying at the Arthur Findlay Spiritualist College in England, I was a sceptic.
Here’s why. Table tipping involves a group of four or five people (psychics or mediums) lightly touching the top of a table with their fingertips. There’s no pressure exerted, but with the build up of psychic energy from the participants, soon the table starts to rock on its legs and then ‘dance’ around the room. If the participants remove their fingertips, the table stops.
Crazy, right?
That’s what I thought, until I attended an evening of table-tipping at the College and experienced
the wooden table I was lightly touching, rocking and then moving rapidly around the room. There were four of us in our group.
First, I could feel the energy building across the surface of the table. The energy grew until it became a steady vibration, which was followed by the table beginning to rock rapidly and move in a circular direction. It was hard to move fast enough to keep up with it while keeping our fingertips in pace.
Psychic energy, when applied by people who know how to direct it, is powerful, and that night I learned that it can definitely move a wooden table. I attended a couple of these evenings, but the attraction soon wore off. I was there for more serious studies.
The final examples of ‘spooky stuff’ involve Spirit’s ability to focus energy.
My Dad was an electrician, and one night shortly after he died, I was in the lounge room alone, talking to him in my mind about how much I missed him. Suddenly I heard a noise coming from the kitchen, where I discovered the electric jug had been turned on. No-one else in the house was awake, so I made a cuppa to ‘have with my Dad’.
I have many more examples of how our spiritual friends use energy to communicate – flickering lights, radios turning on and television channels changing may be signals your loved ones are close. During a Reiki Masters’ Workshop I was hosting with my friend Julie-Ann, a power-point actually blew out of the wall due to the build-up of energy; however, more on that another time.
I hope you enjoyed this column.

EMBRACING STYLE AND STAYING TRUE
Finding my style through the lens of fatherhood, freedom and transformation.
Style is something I used to associate with clothing, trends, and how I was perceived by others. Growing up, I always believed style was about fitting in, following what was popular, and presenting an image that was accepted by society. But as the years have passed, I’ve come to realise that true style goes far beyond the clothes we wear, it’s the embodiment of who we are, how we live, and the values we hold close to our heart.
For me, style has evolved into something much more meaningful. Living on the road with my family and wearing the same few pieces of clothing, I now understand that style isn’t about material possessions, or how we look to the outside world, it’s about authenticity. My style reflects my journey toward freedom, empowerment, and connection. It’s about comfort and choosing clothing that feels aligned with my values, like the natural cotton and linen I wear daily, which resonates with high vibrations and feels true to who I am. Gone are the days of dressing to impress others, now, it’s about
dressing for myself, for the life I lead, and for the legacy I want to leave behind.
Style also shows up in how I approach life. Whether I’m facilitating breathwork, holding space in ceremony, or being a father, my style is grounded in being real and raw. In a world where there’s so much emphasis on appearances, my focus has shifted to creating deeper, conscious connections with the people I work with and the family I hold. My “style” is to ruffle feathers, plant seeds of thought, and encourage others to step into their truth, just as I have.
Ultimately, my style has become a reflection of my values. Family, empowerment, and freedom.
It’s about living life with intention, dressing for the life I want to lead, and showing up in my raw, authentic truth. Style isn’t just about what’s on the outside, it is how we live, love, and lead with integrity.
So, as I continue my journey, I invite you to explore what style means for you… Not in terms of trends or fashion, but in the way you express your values and live your truth.
