The Crusader Key A Bubbly Fundraiser On June 7th, 2015, the first ever Key Club car wash was held at Frank K. Hehnly Elementary School in Clark. The event was organized weeks prior to ensure that fundraising was a success. The car wash’s money would be donated to Tylor’s Soldiers Relay For Life team. The team was put together to honor one of Arthur L. Johnson’s own student, Tylor Collins, who had lost his battle to cancer a day before his seventeenth birthday. The team was made up of family and friends of Tylor, ALJ’s Key Club and S.M.A.C club. The car wash was organized into stations: money collectors, soakers, washers, rinseers and dryers. Up by the entrance of the parking lot, students took turns hold signs and grabbing passing drivers attention by doing things like dancing. The event was a complete success and everyone had fun participating. Overall, the car wash raised over six hundred dollars in three hours. Hopefully, this service year will incorporate more car washes!

Little League Picnic

On the same day as the Key Club car wash, Clark’s annual Little League Picnic took place as well. It was a great way to end the baseball season and the weather was perfect. The picnic began around noon and went on until the late afternoon at the Deutschers Club in Clark. The planners of the event asked members of Clark’s Key Club to join the festivities and take care of a few things at the event. Matt Gallo, editor of Arthur L. Johnson’s Key Club, had a blast helping out the parents and children by serving ice cream and other delicious foods:

“What better than a little league picnic to end a great season. Burgers, cheesesteaks, and Italian ices all available for the players and parents...kids playing on an obstacle course and shooting hoops at the Deutschers Club in Clark...celebrating the great season and giving BY: Matt Gallo out trophies and MVP medals.”

Relay For Life 2015 Relay For Life took place on Saturday the 13th of June at ALJ High School’s Athletic Fields. Key Club was helping Tylor’s Soldiers Relay team set up at noon and stayed strong throughout the day. This year’s relay was different than most years; the event only lasted from 12 noon to 12 midnight. But the shortened time did not stop everyone from getting their laps in and supporting the team. Tylor’s Soldiers team was the largest team at Relay for Life this year and it was evident with the number of tents the team had. The opening ceremony started at 2:00pm on the turf field. Here, those with cancer currently and in the past, were honored with the first lap of the day. The ceremony was touching to all and opened everyone’s eyes to how many people are effected by cancer. Throughout the day, the team stayed cool under the tents eating hamburgers and hot dogs provided by the fire fighters squad in Clark. Vice President Brianna even bought a Slip ‘N’ Slide for the little kids at relay to enjoy. Towards the end of the day, the last ceremony took place at 9:00pm. The track was decorated with lights in memory of anyone impacted by cancer. Albert Martin, last year’s webmaster, had compiled a short but sweet presentation that was played to remember the loved ones of everyone at Relay. Then, everyone took part in a silent lap with the turf lights turned off. That moment was powerful and gave hope to all those around. Overall, Tylor’s Soldiers raised over 6,000 dollars for cancer research and development. Key Club was happy and honored to help support the mission of Relay for Life. BY: Simonne Sequeira Page 5

The Crusader Key Pre-School Visit

Throughout the year, ALJ Key Clubbers visit the Clark Preschool to teach the children important lessons. On June 5th, five members took a couple periods off from school to teach the preschoolers about stranger danger safety. Tylor Moreira, Dani Concina, Emily Sasse, Katy Shriner and Morgana Haub together put on a small skit that highlighted the do’s and don’t about stranger danger. The preschoolers all had a blast while learning and Key Club hopes they have a safer summer.
