Hello my name is Alkistis Thomidou

I have been recently awarded a Dip. Ing. in Architecture from the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, School of Architecture. I have attended a number of international courses at the Technical University of Berlin (TU Berlin) as part of the Socrates/Erasmus International Student Exchange Program and workshops such as the European Architecture Students Assembly (EASA, 2005 to date in Bergün_CH, Budapest_HU. Elefsina_GR. Letterfrack_IR, Nicosia_CY, Vaduz_Liechtenstein, Copenhagen_DK) as participant, greek national contact, tutor and organizer, the SKG in_flux at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (December 2009) and the Architecture Sans FrontieresUK Workshop at Salvador de Bahia_Brazil (April 2010). In 2005, during my fourth semester of studies, I participated with a team of 5 in the students’ idea competition, “The Node”, organized by the School of Architecture and won the third prize. From February 2007 to September 2007 I worked as an intern architect at the Architecture Office FAT. Koehl Architects, Berlin, in the design and construction of the Architekturpreis Berlin 2009 winning project «eins ist zehn, Strelitzer Str. 53» in Berlin, Germany. Additionally, from November 2007 to July 2008 I worked as an intern architect at the Architecture Office Sauerbruch Hutton Architects in Berlin in various international projects and competitions. Recently, I have collaborated with Prof. NIkolaos Kalogirou in a research on distinguished architectural works in Thessaloniki starting from the past century, aiming to the edition of a book and eventually an exhibition at the Macedonian Museum of Contemporary Art. Currently, I live and work in Berlin, Germany. With a diploma in Architecture and several years of professional experience, I am considering a postgraduate program with an exciting and challenging curriculum. I aspire to enrich my skills and broaden my knowledge by academic research, particularly in design-based research in architecture, urbanism, and other issues related to the built environment. The following exist as a compilation of works assembled to best present my potential as a graduate student in Architecture and Urban Design as well as the skills i developed through my professional experience. Each unique project exists as an individual design problem and therefore contains a range of different processes to achieve the proposed resolution.

The course places emphasis on the building/ landscape and the space/form/use relationship. It analyses the notion of the concept by addressing issues such as movement, geometricity, form, materiality and natural light. The design of a cultural space at a site close to the waterfront and the Thessaloniki Concert Hall evolved through various steps. The first one focused on the concept of building schedule, regulations and types of users, the study of the topography and the special characteristics of the site and the development of a conceptual model based on the reading of the area and the programme. The second, on the development of the concept and its architectural expression. Throughout the semester spatial, formal and material / structural issues were addressed.

The idea was to create a vital open space both on the site as well as on the surounding area and the neighbouring concert hall and at the same time introduce a route which welcomes the visitor and allows him to follow it through the open space into the exhibition spaces of the museum, back to the open space in front of the building and finally to the sea

Fom the design inception to the buildable deliverable, the challenge of designing a small scale hotel and spa complex gave us the oppurtunity to experience the compositional -design and construction- approach to the creation of the built environment. The course extensively focused on the particulars and deliverables of the design phases that support and facilitate the evolution of building concepts into buildings (concept design drawings – final design drawings – implementation design drawings). Stage A – Winter semester The first phase of the course introduced a methodology for analyzing the various synthetic parameters of the design challenge (i.e. operational organization, morphology, natural topography, views, orientation, construction choices, etc). A methodology for utilizing the analyses’ results into forming design proposals was also introduced, aiming to facilitate the production of advanced preliminary building designs –with key construction-related elements identified –by the end of stage A of the course. Stage B – Spring semester Stage B focused on the evolution of preliminary design proposals into detailed design and implementation building proposals. The main objective of this phase was to highlight the importance of a unifying concept driving design and detailing decisions during every phase of the architectural design process. The course insisted on the employment of environmentally sensitive design and construction detailing as means for formulating proposals in response to the design challenge. The small scale hotel and Spa complex is located by the shore of the artificial lake of Thermi (Thermi dam) in the periurban area of Thessaloniki, aiming to utilize the natural thermal springs found in the area. The characteristics of the area, the small torrent, the lake and the dense vegetation of pine trees can attract visitors with various interests which are not limited to the facilities of the complex itself indeed they can cover a wide range of free time and outdour activities.

The objective of the studio is the study of architectural interventions in urban systems ocusing on the openness of urban areas. The projects include the design of a modern multi-purpose pavilion in the Bazaar’s area, Vlali square, which is situated in the central region of Thessaloniki, following the original plan of E. Hebrard. The construction, partially above ground (up to 20% of available surface area) and mainly below ground, will take place, where the covered market is situated today. The course includes issues concerning the past and the present of the market, the city reality and architectural issues relating pairs like: construction –demolition, permanent - temporary, guest-host, etc. The pavilion and the underground square serve certain needs of the market’s merchants, customers and visitors. After mapping the potential of the area, a proposal responding to specific scenarios regarding the future of the markets was developed. During the opening hours of the market, the flows of the visitors are intense and the majority belongs to a specific age category, whilst the rest of the day the area is inactive and the square is beeing used as a parking place. aim of the specific proposal was to create an urban public square refering to a wider group of people with different interests and different age.

The design of the square occured from the combination of a pedestrian flows diagramm and the grid system 0.60 x 0.60 cm which can be used as different cale elements, urban equipment, street lights, abatjours for the underground level etc.

Fundamental parameters taken into account were time and weather conditions and determined the concept of the project. A structural and functional grid allows the surface of the square to continually change, depending on the simultaneous activities above ground and underground on diferent times of the day. The activities included refer to recreation and information : a public library and reading space, wireless internet access spots, exhibition spaces, projection and performance area, as well as open air cinema

The grid develops in three dimensions and receives uses from different scales, for instance urban equipment, furniture and exhibition surfaces. The transformation of the 3dimensional elements depending on time and the users presence creates a new surface on which both aboveground and underground activities are being reflected. Core of the composition is the agora pavillion which concidering its size can be analyzed to its parts and even be multiplied. The pavillion is placed in such place as to be visible from the entrances to the square. Its programm is information point and at the same time indicates the entrance to the space underground.

This studio familiarizes students with the mechanisms of architectural and urban design with the limitations resulting from the integration of a new building in the existing urban fabric. The theme of the project is the design of a complex building in central Thessaloniki. The program is focusing on housing and includes a small shopping center and parking facilities for residents as well as visitors. The view as main feature of the site, raised the issue of multiple view points and a variety of appartment sizes refering to different social groups and ages in the name of ‘‘living together’’ as the concept of the polykatoikia typology.

The course deals with internal and external, natural and artificial, tangible and intangible, social and environmental city boundaries. Cities always have had limits: walls separated them from their natural hinterland, they were internally divided into areas of high hygiene for the rich and highly polluted areas for the poor. Within the context of the contemporary diffuse metropolis, the city of networks and digital technology, of many ethnicities and cultures, of environmental degradation and entrenched ‘security’, the concept of boundary is set with new terms and is materialised in new urban forms. The limit between the end of the city and the beginning of nature is subtle and difficult to discern. Aim of the course was to explore the boundaries of contermporary city. The intertvention takes place in a part of the city of Thessaloniki with acute problems of environmental and social degradation, with elements of a recent and not as yet established multicultural identity. The aim of the project is to improve enviromental conditions in the area (highlight natural features, improvement of microclimate, etc.), to reclaim public space, to reveal multiple identities. The social / cultural boundaries of the area are also being discussed and negotiated (different identities, social exclusion, local market - multinational business center, etc.). The survey and the general project scenario developed at scale 1:5000, while specific focus areas were presented in higher detail in scales from 1:1000 to 1:200.

T.I.F._XL is a project based on the scenario of translocation of the Thessaloniki International Fair. The project looks into a design of a new exhibition center to the suburban area of Thessaloniki, specifically in the farm of Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, next to “Macedonia” Airport. The project mainly emphasizes in scale issues, in issues regarding accessibility of the zones situated at city’s edges and also the mix of uses which guaranties viability. Achieving viability in the new complex led to the enrichment of the initial program, aiming to a vital new center with visitors during all day and all year round. Additionally, the initial parking spaces are cut down to the half after taking into consideration the new means of transport which are under development and will serve the area in the near future, such as the extension of the underground and the sea transport system. After the enrichment process, the final program includes a variety of recreation areas, a marine for yachts, a conference center, hotels, a shopping center, exhibition pavilions and a business center. The central idea divides the plot into three zones-poles. Each pole has a size that guaranties its autonomy but at the same time retains the ability of being a part of one complex. Each different pole has its own identity based on the special characteristics of it. Thus, the business center is situated to the zone next to the highways that offers great accessibility, the main exhibition area is situated to the more neutral zone due to the introversion which characterizes the exhibition buildings. Finally the recreation area is situated close to the seafront where the old dried lake Ntalianoudi is reconstituted. Despite the special identity each zone has, none of them has just one use. A green route connects the three zones and also connects the complex with the neighbour areas. The green route changes character as it crosses each zone. My written dissertation was based on a research that I conducted on the new political, economical and social circumstances in the global scale and how they affect the urban landscape. Α text of 20.000 words was developed in 4 individual chapters, which alone constitute subjects for further investigation and analysis. In the first chapter, there has been an attempt to systematically describe the contemporary urban phenomena, aiming to the comprehension of the intense informal urbanization in the developing world as consequence of the new global economic order and a second wave of urbanization. In the second chapter, there is an effort to describe Africa with continental terms via one geographical zoning, in an attempt to determine the typology of the African city and its role in the globalized world, as a physical expression of contemporary urban phenomena. In the third chapter, the focus is set on the Nigerian mega city of Lagos with the aim to describe and understand its exploding urban growth, through a critical illustration of the research program of Rem Koolhaas and the postgraduate program of the university of Harvard ’’Project on the City’’, underlining the kinetic


qualities that create unprecedented conditions of social cohesion and self organization. All the above were eventually summarized in the description of the ‘‘global informal south’’ as a way to introduce new theories on the city. Terms such as informal city- informal settlement, informal vs. formless, static city vs. kinetic city can describe a ‘‘new urban revolution’’, while the global slum appears to be a natural reaction of urban residents to the problems emanating from the extensive growth of urban accumulations. For the description and analysis of all these subjects, the research turned in different scientific fields for information and theories; urban geography, sociology, architecture and urban planning, economy and modern philosophy. The aim of the project was never to give answers or solutions. It expressed a reflection and an alternative point of view concerning the contemporary urban questions and theories that are being developed regarding the image and the production of contemporary cities and an approach to the discussion on the present and the future of cities. At the same time it was setting the question on the role that we as architects can play contributing effectively in the contemporary urban crisis in a century where the globalization of economy and the mass urbanization are the basic factors that shape the world urban landscape.

In 2005 the Technical University of Thessaloniki celebrated its 50th Anniversary. The school of Architecture organized a student idea competition with the title KOMVOS_The node, aiming to collect interesting ideas on the regenaration of the most important circulation junction of the building complex of the Polytechnic School, a modern building of the ‘50s designed by Patroklos Karantinos. The brief refered mainly to the spatial problems of the building of the architecture department but focused on the point where the department, the student’s cafeteria and the main circulation axis meet. In other words on the NODE. The interventions had to be realistic to some extend but at the same time inspiring. The proposal focuses on the absence of a proper amphitheatre of the Architecture School, as well as on the opening of the school’s entrance to the whole department not only physicaly but symbolic as an act of opening the doors to the rest of the Technical School. A new mobile cafè is located outside the building but close to the existing one, under the loggia which connects the schools on the LEVEL 0, intensifying the conection on the other direction too. From the parking area to the big public green space. On LEVEL -1 a new area for the student’s community to meet and exchange ideas is proposed as well as a magazine library, open 24/7. Last but not least, the main staircase of the school is beeing redesigned into an element which with its transparency and lightness will comprise the spine of the new charachter of the school.

“XL, L, M, S, FL” During the EASA INCM _Intermedeate national contacts meeting of 2009 in Liechtenstein, the organsation team decided to launch a competition on the theme XL, L, M, S, FL. Every year more than 40 countries participate on EASA all over europe. While everyone knows his own country very well, a deep investigation of Liechtenstein is unrealistic. However one of the most dominant parameters of Liechtenstein is its dimension, 27km x 5km x 2 km. So we were asced to use our intuition, imagination, skills of visual communication and insert our country there! Squeeze it, shrink it, melt it, rip it off and reassemble it in the size of Liechtenstein and compose one strong A1. All countries were represent in a public exhibition in one of the most exciting cultural spaces of the region, in the heart of Liechtenstein, the Kunstmuseum Liechtenstein. *Is a country defined by its size? Lichtenstein having the size of a Greek island, totally self-sufficient but strongly connected to its neighbors, like the islands do depend on Piraeus Port concerning accessibility, proves the contrary. The building is- more conceptualy than spatially- structured as a narrow and broad „hause“ which is from the outside identified through a vertical Facade notch. Following this idea, a certain range at dwelling types was developed such as four maisonettes (160, 180 and 190 square meters), five flats (80, 120 and 200 square meters) and a small office unit. The apartment in the fourth floor extends to the entire house width, which demonstrates on the one hand the flexibility of the construction, on the other hand the concept counteracted. Each apartment experienced an individual approach according to the desires of the owner which would not be transfered to these detailedness a second time. This intensive contact with the eight clients was more important than the elaborated detail. The apartments are larded with concreted special details, additional strairs structures, custommade installation unicums, which consider most diverse view axles approaching dwelling as an experiment, which never ends. The house keeps its internal complexity for itself , the brittle and somehow random facade design leaves some traces of the life going on mainly into the inside. My tasks focus was on construction drawings in the scale between 1:50 and 1:1. Furthermore i built many models and detail drawings for the different clients. One of my major occupations was the development of the idea of the collapsible balkony through drawings and models.

During this competition the aim has been to discover an architectural language for the heart of Doha that will bring to the city a new and particular identity. In the course of our explorations into the possible character of the new central square, Barahat Al Naseem, and that of its neighboring superblocks, we have been researching the nature of public and private space. This in a context that has both a very refined sense of privacy and very extreme climatic conditions. We have been using these ‘constraints’ to help us create a distinctive urbanism and architecture. Attempting to understand, respect and reinterpret the traditions of Qatari living, equally informed by both cultural and environmental considerations, we have been researching a sense of place that runs through the public realm to the private dwelling, to the individual room. How this room may feel like ‘home’ and give a sense of well-being to the individual, how light will enter, how maximum comfort will be obtained, what is its relationship of this room to its courtyard or and to the other rooms in the house, to the external space of the city, and how has one crossed many thresholds to reach this room from Barahat Al Naseem - these are all questions that we have been posing. We have been exploring these spaces and their thresholds in both urban morphological terms as well as architectural ones, considering the spatial atmospheres, surfaces, as well as the overall integration of the spaces with landscape elements such as trees and water. I took part in the development of the urban concept and the final design of the proposal as well as the final illustration of the final drawings. This includes in particular the urban analysis and design of the town houses according to the special and spatial regulations and costums of Quatar

The ‘Fireej’ or Courtyard Gardens three courtyards are seen as key places within the scheme, forming the interface between the semi-private and the private realms of the Qatari homes. Clusters of six to nine townhouses group themselves to form courtyard gardens each with a different scale and character. The courtyard gardens are reached via three metre wide gated passages that lead discretely off from the internal streets of the block. The entrances into the houses are narrow (1.5m) passages of the same height as the wider one leading into the courtyard garden. Timber entrance gates would be recessed. Window openings are treated in one of two ways: either they are small openings within the structure of the stonework; or these small openings can be grouped together to form rectangular fields that perforate the stonework. When the private courtyards of the townhouses abut the wall of the communal garden, then the ‘face’ of this courtyard projects slightly into the space of the communal garden as a large suspended timber screen. The floor of this communal urban room is edged with stone. A wind tower located within the mass of the surrounding houses feeds the communal garden with cool air. It is anticipated that the Fireej will have very special and somewhat intimate atmospheres.
