MUSIC AND THEATRE
at Grier
MUSIC At all hours of the day, Grier School hums with music. The Music Department provides a well-rounded curriculum geared towards individual interests and goals, and opportunities to develop as musicians include private instruction, individual and ensemble performances, and interactive classes such as AP music theory, recording technology, and beginner piano. Both new and accomplished musicians participate in private lessons to develop their technique and repertoire. With over 40% of students enrolled in at least one music lesson per week — and sometimes many more — the Music Department boasts four full-time faculty members and another ten part-time instructors.

THEATRE Each year, Grier produces three full-length productions: straight plays in November and February and a musical in May. These productions are celebratory culminations of all the creative departments at Grier. Girls apply lessons learned in acting and musical theatre classes, musicians and dancers perform on stage together, and artists design costumes, sets, and promotional materials while also assisting with special effects and video productions of the performances. Students training to improve their craft can enroll in electives that include introduction to acting, intermediate acting, acting for the camera, introduction to musical theatre, and advanced musical theatre. As students in these performance-driven classes, girls shed their inhibitions and work to develop their capabilities related to technique, character analysis, improvisation, and scene study. Units of study within the acting and musical theatre classes as well as other electives in stagecraft, recording technology, and video production introduce girls to the world behind the curtain.
