Welcome to your complete guide to the Celebrate Ipswich Festival, which culminates in the Maritime weekend with thousands experiencing the waterfront and joining in the fun. With activities located throughout the retail heart of the town and the beautiful waterfront, this year’s festival promises to be a celebration of everything great about East Anglia’s premier waterfront town centre. The week sees some great headline activities, including the town’s first ever open air showing of ‘Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs’ at the returning Picnic on the Plaza, and the ever-popular ‘Titan the Robot’. These acts are then followed by a packed weekend, which includes a

stunning fireworks display and the fabulous Beer Festival on Orwell Quay. Or, for something a little bit different, why not book your space on one of our special 'Celebrate' guided walks to learn about the rich and varied history of Ipswich, or take time out to relax on a scenic cruise down the River Orwell. This year’s Celebrate Ipswich Festival is guaranteed to provide you with a unique experience, as East Anglia’s premier waterfront town centre comes alive in August, with residents and visitors joining together to ‘Celebrate Ipswich’.

Information correct at time of going to press, all times subject to change.

The owner of last year’s Independent Business of the Year, Sue Carter of Image Beauty Salon, recently shared with us the secret of her success.

2. We keep noticing fantastic new services that Image is offering. What’s the most popular treatment at the moment?

1. Image Salon has won numerous awards locally and nationally over the last year. What’s the secret to your continued success?

Definitely our eyelash extensions – they’ve been popular since we launched them!

Passion. Our staff take real pride in the treatments and service we offer. There’s no better feeling than making each customer feel special. Whilst it is great to receive industry awards, the best feedback is the support of our loyal customers who return month after month.

3. What is it about Ipswich that you would particularly like to celebrate? For me, it’s about being able to say that I’ve created a successful family run business in the town centre. I grew up in Ipswich and have raised my family here.

FLORAL TRAIL

COME & FIND ME!

‘Celebrate Ipswich’ is all about celebrating everything that’s good about Suffolk’s county town. Not only are we East Anglia’s premier waterfront town centre, we are home to a network of historic areas waiting to be discovered. Blackfriars is an area on and around Fore Street on the eastern fringe of the town centre, and is home to an eclectic mix of eateries, bars, coffee shops and independent boutiques. It is served by more than 500 covered car parking spaces at the Blackfriars Foundation Street car park. A short walk from Foundation Street, you’ll find the historic ruins of a 13th -16th century Friary Church – the only substantial remains of a medieval community’s foundation in the town. The Blackfriars, whose Friary of the Blessed Virgin lay to the south of Tacket Street, is where the area gets its name. It was excavated by archeologists during the 1980's. 14

Pop into Blackfriars coffee shop for a slice of cake and a cuppa, or book into one of the many lovely restaurants for a leisurely lunch or evening meal. You can also book a Blue Plaque Tour (see page 9) to bring to life the history of Blackfriars. For details on all of the shops, restaurants and coffee shops in Blackfriars, visit www.allaboutipswich.com or download the app.

St Peter's Street and St Nicholas Street – The Saints – is one of the main linkages between the town’s thriving retail centre and the leisurely waterfront area. The Saints combines a mix of independent restaurants and bars with clothing, interior and gift retailers. The area is awash with history; the buildings in the area date back to Tudor time providing visitors with a real sense of Ipswich’s heritage. Ipswich’s most famous son, Cardinal Wolsey, was born and lived in Silent Street during the 1400s. He was Cardinal of the Church, Archbishop of York and Lord Chancellor of England for Henry VIII for 14 years, making him the second most powerful man in the kingdom during that time. A new lifesized memorial to Cardinal Wolsey by David Annand was recently erected on Curson Plain, at the corner of Silent Street. Why not take a stroll and browse the shops,

16

and then visit one of the lovely eateries or cafes to soak up the atmosphere. See page 9 to find out how to book onto a Blue Plaque Tour and learn more about the history of ‘The Saints’. Visit allaboutipswich.com or download the app to find out more about The Saints and see the full range of shops, cafes and eateries.

After the fantastic week of activities throughout the town centre, celebrations continue into the bank holiday weekend with a selection of events including the fabulous fireworks on the Waterfront. On the 200th anniversary of Captain Broke, East Anglia’s premier waterfront town centre will be a hive of activity as we celebrate its impressive maritime history. This year’s line up includes historic vessels, beautiful yachts, a Beer Festival, Continental Markets, Georgian re-enactments and popular music and entertainment. With so much going on, Ipswich is sure to impress for another year.

18

visiting Tall Ships

ASTO The line up of vessels begins with a fleet of 12 large sailing yachts, some of which are nearly 100 years old and are taking part in the race to Cowes. These yachts will be mooring close to the university for you to view and climb on board throughout the weekend, before they set sail for the ASTO race on Monday 26th August. More information will be featured on the website. See overleaf to view an example of the featured yachts.

Jolie Brise One of the most famous tall ships in the world, Jolie Brise is a 56’ gaff-rigged pilot cutter built in Le Havre in 1913. It was launched by the Paumelle yard to a design by Alexandre Paris. Jolie Brise was built to make fast ocean passages, and was the last boat to carry the Royal Mail under sail. Due to steam replacing sail, her career as a pilot boat was short-lived and she became a fishing boat for a time before being bought by E.G Martin in 1923. Following a refit, she competed in the Fastnet race four times between 1925 and 1930, winning three races – including the inaugural race in 1925. After several changes of ownership and home port, including 30 years sailing out of Lisbon, Jolie Brise returned to the Solent in 1975. 20

Dauntsey’s School secured the use of Jolie Brise in 1977 by arranging a long-term lease with her owners at the time, the Exeter Maritime Museum and the International Sailing Craft Association. As Dauntsey’s pupils had maintained and sailed Jolie Brise for 25 years by then, the ISCA offered to sell her to the school in 2003. Jolie Brise now regularly takes part (and wins!) in Tall Ships Races with a novice crew who are all under 25.

Challenge Wales was originally known as Challenge Business 47, and successfully took part in two round the world races; Global Challenge Races, branded as ‘Olympic’ and ‘VAIO’ respectively. Designed by Robert Humphreys and built by Devenport Yachts in 2000, she was one of 12 identical boats that took part in the ‘World’s Toughest Yacht Race’ covering more than 29,000 nautical miles.

onto the deck. She has also taken part in the Ward Evans Atlantic Rowing Challenge where she was a safety vessel. Since 2009, Challenge Wales has been Cardiff based, and was invited to be part of the Queen’s Jubilee Thames Pageant in London. Following this, Challenge Wales raced from London to the Olympic sailing venue in the ASTO Small Ships Race where she took Line Honours and First in Class.

She was built with a steel hull and stainless steel deck and has, over the years, experienced weather conditions ranging from gentle airs to gusts of over 60 knots, seas lapping against the side of the boat and 50 foot waves crashing

Baroque on a Boat

Saturday 24th August two showings from 8pm

No festival would be complete without music, and Celebrate Ipswich is no exception. This year, our line up will include an evening of naval music written in the late 18th and early 19th century by composers including William Shield, Charles Dibdin and James Dale, all played on board the beautiful sailing barge, Victor.

The stunning sound of these classic composers will provide an ideal backdrop for a meander through Ipswich’s premier waterfront town centre during Celebrate Ipswich. Victor will be moored near the Customs House.

There will also be a number of performers dressed in appropriate 18th century attire to create an authentic sense of what an open air concert of the time would have been like. 23

Paint the town

purple in Ipswich which is quite simply Best Bar None!

Ipswich works hard to ensure you have a great night out and is officially the only town in Suffolk allowed to fly the coveted Purple Flag – a national sign that Ipswich by night is well managed. Not only does the place itself have an accreditation but many of the licensed premises have also worked hard to receive a mark of excellence for their very own business. Best Bar None is a national scheme which acknowledges and helps promote businesses which have proven to have the customer in mind in all aspects of the business, from health and safety through to customer service training for their staff.

To find out more about Purple Flag and Best Bar None search for them on allaboutipswich.com or download the All About Ipswich App. All Best Bar None premises are highlighted on it with directions on how to get to them!
