Ipswich is a town steeped in history and there are so many places to explore during Heritage Fortnight to give you a glimpse into our past. ‘Heritage Open Days’ runs from 10 to 13 September and gives people the chance to explore a range of fantastic buildings and other places which are not normally open to the public. This guide will help you as you delve into the past. But, please don’t just stop there. The open days may only last for four days but there are plenty of other opportunities to explore our heritage throughout the year and this guide contains details of many of these.

RITAGE E H OPEN•DAYS WELCOME IN Buildings and other places in the town that are normally closed to the public will be open between 10 and 13 September for visitors to explore for free. Heritage Open Days is England’s biggest heritage festival and involves 40,000 volunteers. The days help us to celebrate our history, architecture and culture, allowing people to try out new experiences and discover places that are normally hidden to the public. THE IPSWICH INSTITUTE, THE ADMIRAL'S HOUSE, 13-15 TOWER STREET, IPSWICH, SUFFOLK IP1 3BE This building was probably built in the reign of Charles II (1660–1685) with a later Georgian front. The interior is a mix of architectural styles. Once the home of Admiral Benjamin Page, visited by Wellington in 1820, it houses the Institute members’ restaurant, coffee lounge and lecture room. TOWN HALL
TOWN HALL, IPSWICH, SUFFOLK IP1 1DH Opened in 1868, this is a good example of high Victorian civic architecture with external features of classical columns, statues and sculpted heads. The grand staircase has oak balustrade and cast iron work. The Mayor’s Parlour will be open during the heritage weekend. For tours of the Town Hall, Mayor’s Parlour and Corn Exchange, guests are asked to meet in the foyer. OPENING TIMES

ARLINGTONS BRASSERIE
ARLINGTONS BRASSERIE, 13 MUSEUM STREET, IPSWICH, SUFFOLK IP1 1HE A Grade II listed, three storey building with an attractive façade including Doric columns, a grand classical styled staircase (1550 from the old Seckford Hall) and a vaulted entrance hall. Built in 1847 as a museum, Darwin’s tutor Henslow gave free lectures to the public here. It is now a brasserie, serving delicious homemade food, with afternoon tea from 2.30 until 5pm daily. WILLIS, PO BOX 71, IPSWICH, SUFFOLK IP1 1TA Celebrating its 40th year in Ipswich, the iconic Willis Building in Friars Street will, after two years of refurbishment, be open to the public for Heritage Open Weekend. Guided tours of the building will be given including the swimming pool, one of the office floors and the roof garden. The coffee bar will also be open. Norman Foster gets the credit for the Willis building, for it was his idea of hanging glass as curtain walls and large open plan offices, that were revolutionary in the early 1970’s. However architects (Sir) Michael Hopkins and Ipswich born Birkin Haward (Junior) also worked on the scheme. OPENING TIMES

The heritage bus, organised by Ipswich Borough Council, will depart from the Old Custom House at 30 minutes past the hour. A full timetable, with details of stops, is available from the Tourist Information Centre. Please note, the Heritage Bus may not be accessible to mobility impaired passengers. CHRIST CHURCH, TACKET STREET, IPSWICH, SUFFOLK IP4 1AU Christ Church was designed in 1856, by local architect Frederick Barnes in the Gothic Revival style, and built in Kentish Ragstone with Caen stone quoins. The interior has a large gallery, cast iron work and a stained glass east window. OPENING TIMES

UNITARIAN MEETING HOUSE
FRIARS STREET, IPSWICH, SUFFOLK IP1 1TD Built in 1699 and one of the architectural gems of Ipswich, original box pews, a magnificent pulpit carved in the style of Grinling Gibbons, Dutch 17th Century candelabra and a clock from an even earlier date feature. It also has fine entrance doors, one even has a spyhole for use against visits from opponents of nonconformist worshippers. OPENING TIMES

Pykenham Gatehouse NORTHGATE STREET, IPSWICH IP1 3BX
The Pykenham Gatehouse was built in the late 15th Century for William Pykenham, Archdeacon of Suffolk, as the entrance to his residence. The Ipswich Building Preservation Trust carried out a major restoration project in 1982–1983.

Travel back in time to meet the builder of Pykenham’s Gatehouse. Talk to the Archdeacon about his work, as well as crime and punishment in 15th Century Ipswich. Hear tales of swine in the churchyard and stolen bells melted down for scrap, and learn how the culprits were dealt with in the church courts.
Make your own medieval document complete with seal, or draw the 15th Century gatehouse building (small prize for the best creation). Explore our historic buildings treasure trail around the town centre – a fun activity for families as part of this special Heritage Open Days event. GATEHOUSE VISIT
‘Creating a future for the past.’ Join a special walking guided tour of historic buildings at risk, past and present. Learn more about the important work of the trust in preserving Ipswich’s buildings for future generations to enjoy. The tour will include special access to the cellars and some first floor areas of the trust’s most recently completed project, ‘Curson Lodge’. The walk starts at Pykenham’s Gatehouse, ends at St Peter’s Church and lasts approximately 75 minutes.
On Sunday there is another rare opportunity to visit the Gatehouse, one of the earliest domestic buildings in Ipswich. OPENING TIMES

AT CHRISTCHURCH MANSION UNTIL 31 JANUARY 2016 Some of the finest paintings by a British artist are included in the Mansion’s Wolsey Art Gallery, including the iconic Salisbury Cathedral from the Meadows 1831. Pictures loaned from the Tate and others, complement Ipswich Borough Council’s collection of Constables – the largest outside London. Constable’s work in the Tate Collection was secured for the British public through the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF), The Manton Foundation, the Art Fund (with a contribution from the Wolfson Foundation) and Tate Members. The acquisition and display is part of Aspire, a five-year partnership supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund and the Art Fund to enable the work to go on almost constant view across the UK.

As you wander through the Saints and Blackfriars areas of the town, the gorgeous Tudor buildings that line the streets help you picture yourself in 16th Century Ipswich.
BLACKFRIARS Monastery The historic remains of the Blackfriars monastery can be found in this area of the town and information boards guide you around the ruins, helping you to imagine what the area looked like hundreds of years ago.
THE THOMAS WOLSEY PUBLIC HOUSE The Thomas Wolsey was originally a wool merchant’s house, built in the15th Century. Over the last 500 years, it has been used for a variety of purposes but since the 70s it has been known as a local drinking establishment.
cardinal wolsey statue A memorial to Cardinal Wolsey by sculptor David Annand was erected on Curson Plain at the corner of Silent Street, opposite where Wolsey lived in his childhood. This memorial is a life-sized bronze statue of Cardinal Wolsey, shown seated facing south towards St Peter’s Church teaching from a book, with a cat at his side. D E ID U G WALKS If you’re looking to explore Ipswich but don’t quite know where to start, join a guided walk and let someone else take you on a journey through the history of the town. From May to September, members of the public can enjoy guided walks on Tuesdays and Thursdays, leaving the Tourist Information Centre at 2.15pm. Each walk takes around 90 minutes to complete and costs £4 per person.
Free Heritage Open Days guided walk To mark Heritage Open Days, two free walks have been organised as part of the annual Europe-wide celebration of architecture. These will leave the Tourist Information Centre at 10.30am on Saturday 12 and Sunday 13 September, taking in many of the properties open over the weekend.

Join the experienced guides on the first Thursday of every month as they take you on a guided walk with a difference. Learn the stories of some of the most haunted places in the town and who is said to haunt them. The ghost walks leave from the Tourist Information Centre at 7pm and cost £7 per person.

Sustainable features include green roof, architectural climate adaptation, insulation and glazing, cycle facilities, heat recovery system featuring a heat wheel ventilation, sensory lighting, building management system for efficiency and water saving. OLD CUSTOM HOUSE
ABP IPSWICH, OLD CUSTOM HOUSE, COMMON QUAY, KEY STREET, IPSWICH, SUFFOLK IP4 1BY The Old Custom House was built in 1844/5 and is now home to the offices of Associated British Ports. Whilst the waterfront area has undergone a massive transformation over the years, the Old Custom House still stands as a reminder of historic significance. The classical style of the building is particularly impressive from the dockside, with its four columned porticos bearing the Ipswich Coat-of-Arms of lion rampant and the stern of three ships supported by sea-horses, a reminder of the town’s maritime heritage. The building is Grade II listed. OPENING TIMES

ISAACS ON THE QUAY
ISAACS, 7 WHERRY QUAY, IPSWICH, SUFFOLK IP4 1AS Found in a group of buildings, parts of which date back to the early 1400s, Isaacs is the best example of a merchants house, warehousing and sales room (auction house) in the country. When Ipswich was a prosperous trading town, corn, wool and coal were sold from the building. Isaac Lord purchased the buildings around 1900 and they continued to be used for trading coal and corn until the 1980s. Many original features remain throughout the building and many pieces of equipment used during the building’s long and industrious past are still on display today. OPENING TIMES

SAILING BARGE VICTOR
SAILING BARGE VICTOR, COMMON QUAY, KEY STREET, IPSWICH, SUFFOLK IP4 1BY Built in 1895 in Ipswich, this is one of the oldest working Thames Sailing Barges. Commissioned for work in the linseed trade, SB Victor worked in the general cargo from the 1930s. During the war she survived a bomb blast and since then has had a varied career including as a strip club and a houseboat. Restored to her traditional 19th century rig, the barge can be found opposite Old Custom House. OPENING TIMES

QUAY PLACE, IPSWICH, SUFFOLK A beautiful medieval church being restored by Suffolk Mind and the Churches Trust, with help from a £3.6m Heritage Lottery fund grant. The church will re-open next year as a well-being and heritage centre known as Quay Place. Activities will include brass rubbing and an archaeology and information display. OPENING TIMES

ST PETER’S CHURCH, COLLEGE STREET, IPSWICH, SUFFOLK IP1 1XF St Peter’s by the Waterfront has displays about the history of St Peter’s Church from the 12th Century to the present day. Marble Font, the magnificent East Window and the many architectural features by Cardinal Thomas Wolsey century can all be discovered. During Heritage Open Days St Peter’s by the Waterfront will be open with special events including a craft and gift fair, local live music and children’s activities on the Saturday. This Heritage Fortnight we'll also be welcoming stage seven of the Aviva Tour of Britain as it culminates in Ipswich on Saturday 12 September. The town will welcome riders as they come to the end of the penultimate and longest leg of the 2015 race. Beginning in Fakenham, riders will travel through Norfolk and Suffolk before they cross the finish line along Princes Street. Competitors will be entering Ipswich around 3.30pm via Wherstead Road and their route will see them ride along Burrell Road in front of the railway station before turning on to Princes Street for a straight sprint to the finish line.
