Christchurch Mansion

This beautiful Tudor Mansion is set in the picturesque surroundings of Christchurch Park and boasts over 500 years of history. Visitors are welcome to explore the building for free where they can wander around the period rooms including the Tudor kitchen, Georgian saloon and Victorian wing. Christchurch Mansion is also home to a stunning collection of John Constable and Thomas Gainsborough paintings that can be viewed in the Wolsey Art Gallery. Thanks to Heritage Lottery Funding, until January 2016, the collection also features Sailsbury Cathedral from the Meadows (1831) by John Constable, a major “six-footer” of which he wrote: “I am told I got it to look better than anything I have yet done”.

TOU RS TOURS

The friends of Ipswich Museums offer free daily tours of the Mansion and these will take place throughout the summer from Tuesday to Saturday at 11am and on Sundays at 2pm.

Guided Walks

If you want to delve in to the history of the town with the help of an Ipswich town guide, then there are plenty of opportunities to join a guided walk around the town and learn all about the people who lived here and the architecture that remains. Follow in the footsteps of King Henry VIII and Cardinal Thomas Wolsey as you explore the Tudor buildings which decorate the town. Blue plaques line the way and help you discover the towns connections with many famous names, including Charles Dickens. A variety of walks are available to choose from throughout the summer and take place on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 2.15pm. Other walks are available during the evenings and weekends on selected dates throughout the year. Most walks begin at the Tourist Information Centre and last around 90 minutes. All walks cost £4 per person, unless otherwise stated.
