BUSINESS OF THE YEAR 2014
This year, All About Ipswich is running its third Independent Business of the Year competition.
From vintage clothing boutiques to charming cafÊs, East Anglia’s Waterfront Town has so many fantastic independent businesses to choose from. Voting could not be easier too and here is how:
1. Vote via Twitter or Instagram @allaboutipswich 2. Vote via www.ipswichstar.co.uk 3. Fill in a voting form at any participating independent business 4. Email the name of your favourite independent to info@allaboutipswich.com
The five independent businesses that receive the most votes will then be mystery shopped by a panel of expert judges who will determine the winner.
Media partner:
The winner of last year’s Independent Business of the Year was Jacey’s Coffee House, a family run café in the heart of Ipswich. • How long have you had your business in Ipswich and what is the key to your success? We started the coffee house in December 1999 and were lucky enough to get established with a good number of regulars who have remained loyal throughout the years. I think our success comes from sheer hard work, and keeping the ethos on good home cooking whilst still being willing to change with the times. • Can you tell us a bit about your favourite dish at the café? Oh, we have so many! But if we had to pick one it would be our range of melts, they are so much better than normal paninis! We particularly love the Classico (brie and bacon with cranberry) the ‘Times Square’ (barbecued pulled pork and cheddar) or the ‘Billy Goat’ (caramelised onion, peppers and goats cheese). • What are you most excited about for the festival? The atmosphere! During festival time there is generally a great atmosphere, created by all the events and markets, it’s just a fun time. • Are you doing anything special for the Celebrate Festival? We are doing a special Maritime Menu during August and will feature a delicious ‘Creamy Sea Food Tagliatelle’. The menu will include two courses and cost £16 for two people. It will also include a glass of red/ white house wine or tea/coffee and will be available all day. You can download the offer from www.allaboutipswich.com or visit the All About Ipswich app to get the offer on your Android or iPhone.

G N I T I S VI This year there will be a selection of visiting vessels for you to view and climb aboard during the weekend. There will also be a number of tours running on the Saturday and Sunday on board the ships, to discover the vessels’ significant heritage.
Pudge
Built in 1922 by London & Rochester Trading Co., Pudge is a Thames sailing barge with a hull construction of pitch pine on oak with a flush deck. Pudge was one of the last wooden barges to be built before steel vessels were introduced. Its working life began as a cargo carrier until it was interrupted in spectacular fashion by the Second World War when it was requisitioned in May 1940 to aid the Dunkirk evacuation. Pudge is one of only four of the Dunkirk Spritsail Barges that survive. Pudge and Centaur will also be moored on Orwell Quay for you to discover more about their intriguing history.
Vic 96
The VIC 96 (or its full name Victualing Inshore Craft) is one of the last surviving steamships. The vessel plays a significant part in English Maritime history, built as part of the war effort to supply naval dockyards and the fleet. The ship will be moored at Orwell Quay during the weekend so make sure you visit its crew to discover more about the steamships important history.
Centaur
Centaur, built of wood, was a coasting barge – able to trade all around the British coast and to the near continent. The barge was launched in 1895 by John and Herbert Cann. The barge is a slow but steady vessel built to carry over 160 tons or 600 quarters of wheat through the heavy seas in the 18th Century. Centaur is now owned by Thames sailing barges, a charity that exists to preserve barges in sailing condition.
May
May was built in Harwich in 1891 by Cann for Cranfield Bros of Ipswich. The barge was transported to Canadian Lakes for the Olympic Games and was a successful racing barge under Dave Copsey between 1972-1993. During the weekend visitors will be welcomed on board with refreshments.

Ipswich is England’s oldest continuously settled town and it was the first to be built by the Anglo-Saxons after their conquest of Britain. Ipswich was a prosperous trade town as evidenced by a Saxon mint operating here from about 970 and such wealth attracted the attention of the Vikings. In the late 9th and early 10th centuries Vikings held the town but were later expelled in 917. The Vikings also raided again in 919, 991 and again in 1010 and even after the Norman Conquest a further raid ravaged Ipswich, in 1069, when Sweyn of Denmark was defeated in battle near the town by a force headed by Robert Bigod.
