No ordinary sheep. No ordinary cheeses. Choose to bring unique cheeses to your table. Choose 3 Pecorini. They are produced with 100% sheep’s milk from sheep that are raised freely in very specific regions of Italy, following ancient traditions that shepherds continue to adhere to still today. 3 Pecorini includes Pecorino Sardo, Pecorino Romano and Fiore Sardo, cheeses with a Protected Designation of Origin label that certifies the highest quality guaranteed by their territory of origin. The production of Sardinian P.D.O. cheese is the result of an unspoiled land, a long-standing dairy culture, and the work of a wise team of men. And of sheep. The term “PECORINI” in Italian means cheese made from sheep’s milk.

SIGNATURE ITALIANESS

Since our launch, the spirit of this magazine has been influenced by a deep commitment to a multi-faceted approach. This is because, in our opinion, a mission as important as the promotion of the Made in Italy brand abroad, as represented in every aspect of Italian style needed, to be delivered in a variety of ways. All About Italy has become a more interesting and varied modern project that involves, in addition to the editorial dimension, an economic and cultural strategy. We continue to be committed at every level to encouraging convergence between brands, to increase business opportunities, and to convey the Italian sensibility and style in the world. Our aim is to sustain, enhance, and share with the world the value of the Italian creative culture, and to promote high profile Italian events. It is in keeping with this mission that the magical world of opera returns on these pages once again to highlight the prestigious stages of the Teatro dell’Opera in Rome and the Teatro alla Scala in Milan, as they deliver a good dose of classics and a few strokes of contemporary music. Contemporary culture also permeates the creative adventures of Michele Casadei Massari, one of the most brilliant names in the culinary world. Massari, the founder and executive chef of Piccolo Cafe in New York, shares the full expression of his Italian flavored American dream, starting with the beautiful cover photo and an interview where he expresses his true passion for his native region of Bologna and his Italian culture which is infused in Massari’s unique interpretations of food.

PIEDMONT IS TOP OF ‘BEST IN TRAVEL 2019’ Lonely Planet’s ‘Best in Travel 2019’ guide presents Piedmont as the number one region among those to be explored in 2019, ahead of the Catskill Mountains in the US, northern Peru, Australia’s Red Centre, and the Scottish Highlands. Considering its wealthy offer – which includes lively electronic-music scene, contemporary art fairs, breathtaking alpine paths and scenery, and green valleys where full-bodied red wines and precious truffles are produced – the guide suggests to visit within the next year, because it may not remain a secret known only to the most informed travelers for long. In fact, according to the guide, the northwestern corner of Italy “is adept at playing to its strengths but not always so good at selling its considerable charms to visitors.” Piedmont’s capital city, Turin, not only has a vast (and recently renovated) Egyptian Museum, hosting one of the largest collections of Egyptian artifacts outside of Cairo, but it is also very well kept, flourishing contemporary-art scene, a very special self-portrait of Leonardo da Vinci in the city’s Biblioteca Reale (Royal Library), and has an exceptional view of the Alps. But there are plenty of attractions throughout the region: the sumptuous royal residences built for the once-mighty House of Savoy, the string of ski villages that make up Piedmont’s so-called mountain ‘Milky Way’, and the region’s culinary specialties including hazelnut chocolate and top-notch beef. Obviously, one of the main attractions is the rolling and vineyard landscape of the Langhe-Roero and Monferrato, an area listed as UNESCO’s World Heritage. Indeed, Piedmont, with its red wine, white truffles, and green valleys, proudly represents the national flag. Margherita Pituano

PETRUCCI, THE ITALIAN STAR OF STREET ART Nello Petrucci, one of the most popular artists on the world stage of contemporary art, is the only Italian artist to exhibit in New York in an exhibition called ‘A masterpiece in the sky’ that opened in October at the World Trade Center. The complex owned by the Silverstein Foundation is a reference point for contemporary street art and currently hosts works by about 50 artists from all over the world – including Ron English, Brandon Sines, WhlsBe, Rubin 415, Lauren YS, Chris WRK, and Layercake – with the declared intention of becoming ‘a masterpiece in the sky’. Petrucci has been working in New York since the beginning of September to create an original work titled ‘The essence of lightness’, a mural that covers a 12 meter long and 3.5 meter tall wall of the 45th floor of 3 World Trade Center. Shreds of torn advertising images plastering New York walls find new life in a work that combines past and present in a dynamic way, bestowing the gift of speech on the previously silent surface. Petrucci, 37 years old from Pompeii, is an artist and filmmaker who lives and works in Pompeii and New York. After earning a degree in cinematography in Rome and working with directors such as Martin Scorsese, Ari Taub, Manetti Bros, and Alan Taylor, he began to work on various independent projects – short movies, video art, independent movies – for which he received numerous awards. His artistic journey began when he moved for a short time to Dublin, where he met numerous artists, and continues between Rome and Naples, where he attended the Academy of Fine Arts. He finally found the best way to express his artistic sensibility through collage and decollage overlaying images in order to create a world, a kinetic language, made of intersections and interactions.

FILIPPO BARTOLOTTA: THE LUXURY OF ITALIAN FOOD, WINE AND ART

XXX XXX

The renowned Tuscan food, wine, and art tour coordinator Filippo Bartolotta is from Florence and there he created, in collaboration with the American Vanessa Held, Le Baccanti Tours, specialized in luxury vacations to all destinations within Italy and unique wine, gourmet, fashion and art events. Experiencing the Italian way of life is the yearning for thousands of Americans who grew up with the dream of ‘La dolce vita’, and Bartolotta and Held make these dreams come true creating memories of landscapes, aromas, and flavors all rigorously Made in Italy. The idea is to accompany the dreamers to the discovery of food, wine, fashion, and art with a customized, tailored approach. One of the most appreciated experiences offered by Bartolotta himself is ‘The Amazing Italian Wine Journey’ during which he tells, through the tasting, the stories of producers capable of transforming intuitions into concrete projects, with stubbornness, taste, and courage. Starting from wine, it was natural to move onto the amazing culinary experiences that Italy has to offer, and soon the idea spread to fashion, art, and the most diverse experiences. Le Baccanti now organizes incredible customized trips: a truffle hunt in the Langhe, trips to discover the best saffron in the world - also known as ‘Red Gold’ -, a visit to a master cheese maker to find out how the burrata is made, a trip on the slopes of Etna to collect pistachios. Plenty of American celebrities have been able to savor Italy living for a few days as a local without sacrificing either privacy or comfort. Actress Jessica Alba asked for a cooking class, while the Obamas enjoyed tailored wine tasting tour; other celebrities who have enjoyed Le Baccanti services include Dustin Hoffman, Emma Thompson, Bryan Adams, John Malkovich, Stephen Colbert, and Eminem. CULTURE

‘ROOMS OF ROME’, LIVING THE ART IN THE HEART OF ROME ‘Rhinoceros’ is the experiment conceived in a historic palace by the Fondazione Alda Fendi – Esperimenti that has been designed and furnished by the great French architect Jean Nouvel, and inaugurated in October. ‘Rhinoceros’ represents the synthesis of the Foundation’s philosophy that since 2001 has promoted artistic experimentation that goes beyond the conventional boundaries between the disciplines: exhibitions, multimedia creations, action, artistic interference involving different experiential areas, visual and performing arts. A real “city of art”: a place to visit through the passageways of the art gallery, to live in its magnificent 24 apartments immersed in the heart of ancient Rome, there where Rome was born, and to be admired for the atmosphere of its dreamy terraces. A hub of attraction, a lighthouse illuminated day and night, where artistic research and creativity find their ideal home. The 24 apartments named ‘The Rooms in Rome’ are located within the ‘Rhinoceros’ together with the gallery restaurant and they offer the opportunity of a unique art and architecture experience through personalized stays in which wishes and ideas have no boundaries. These special and unique fully equipped apartments offer state of the art of technology and domotics while respecting the building’s history and background while offering a virtually infinite range of possibilities when visiting the Eternal City. Prior to their check-in, guests will be able to choose from a pillow menu, from a wide variety of perfumes for their room. Plenty of additional experiences are provided “á la carte” by commercial partners, and they include absolutely everything a person might need, from beauty treatments and massages to any type of lessons or training, from show cooking and entertainment, to museum and city private tours, and even art creation. RESTAURANTS

ROMITO’S ‘REALE’ IS THE TOP OF ITALIAN RESTAURANTS In the ‘Guida dei ristoranti d’Italia 2018’ (Guide to Italian Restaurants 2018), Gambero Rosso confirms the three forks to Niko Romito and his sister’s restaurant in Castel di Sangro (L’Aquila) and its first place on the guide’s ranking with an extraordinary 96/100 rating. The adventure of ‘Reale’ (meaning ‘royal’) began in 2000, when Niko and his sister Cristiana took over the osteria that their father Antonio had opened in the village of Rivisondoli (L’Aquila), on the premises of the historic family pastry shop. Neither sibling had any previous experience in the restaurant business, but in just a few years ‘Reale’ seduced customers and food critics with a highly original and personal cuisine that earned them the first Michelin star in 2007, and the second one in 2009. In 2011 the business moved to the present location at Casadonna in Castel di Sangro, in the Parco Naturale d’Abruzzo (National Park of Abruzzo), where ‘Reale’ found its most complete expression. The third Michelin star arrived in 2013. Today this restaurant is the beating heart of the Niko Romito’s ‘system’ – a laboratory where every day the chef and his crew conduct intensive research and give birth to new dishes – and now it has been crowned the top Italian restaurant. During his speech at the award ceremony Niko Romito said that for him is important to deserve three Michelin stars, and three Gambero Rosso forks, as well as being able to bring quality into a hospital canteen, demonstrating that haute cuisine can be done for many, if not for all, and with a sustainable project. In saying this he referred to his ‘Nutrition Intelligence’ project, which has revolutionized the meals distributed in the two hospitals in Rome, “Cristo Re” and “Villa Betania”, improving the nutritional intake for patients and value for money of food cost. LIFESTYLE

ART, FASHION, AND FOOD SOZZANI’S STYLE IN NEW YORK

16

When Carla Sozzani opened ‘10 Corso Como’ in Milan, in 1991, she revolutionized the shopping experience by launching the idea of destination retail. Starting from her art gallery, her aim was to create a “virtual 3D magazine”, a unique and carefully curated shopping experience blending fashion, design, dining, art, and music. After exporting her concept store to Tokyo in 2002, to Seoul in 2008, to Shanghai in 2013, and to Beijing in 2015, now it is the turn of New York, where Sozzani opened her location in the Seaport District. In the Big Apple, ‘10 Corso Como’ found a new identity in the relationship with its context, because, as Sozzani explained: “Each place has its charm and its identity. There are no replicas because the pleasure is to create a new sensibility that comes from the location and the place, from the people and the environment, like a plant that responds to the ground in which it is planted.” In this case, the ground is that of the Lower Manhattan neighborhood that has had many lives: a lively port, a community of artists in the 1960s, the victim of a hurricane, a tourist district full of fast food restaurants. Today Seaport District is transforming into a cultural, culinary, entertainment, and shopping hub. Sozzani commented: “I am very excited to introduce ‘10 Corso Como’ to New York. Almost 30 years after we opened in Milan, to be a part of such an inspiring resurgence in one of the city’s oldest artistic and commercial neighborhoods is a dream.” In Seaport District, ‘10 Corso Como’ occupies the entire first floor of the Fulton Market Building (built in 1822). The 28,000-square foot space is entirely designed, like all the other locations of the store, by American artist Kris Ruhs, and it features an Italian cafe and restaurant, a store where to find clothing, design objects, and books, an art and photography gallery, as well as a central garden. THE MOST SOCIAL SUSHI RESTAURANT IN MILAN The Pittarello brothers, Matteo and Tommaso, from Padua, are the owners of the ‘This is not a sushi bar’ chain, which today opens a new restaurant in Milan, with an innovative marketing formula: the bill is proportioned to the customers’ Instagram followers. The Pittarellos want to advertise their establishment by exploiting Instagram influencers, the most famous ones as well as those on their way to the social media stardom: “We want customers to play with us and feel part of our project,” said the Pittarello brothers. “Today, sponsorships on channels such as social networks and, in particular, Instagram, are the ones that have a better return.” They apply this theory offering customers one or more free dishes based on the number of followers they have on the social media. To receive their free dish, or dishes, customers, after ordering the first dish, have to take a photo of it and post it on Instagram, obviously tagging the restaurant. It is at this point that the number of followers makes the difference: for customers who have between 1,000 and 5,000 followers, the second dish is on the house; for customers who have between 5,000 and 10,000 followers, two dishes are on the house; for customers who have between 10,000 and 50,000 followers, four dishes are free; between 50,000 and 100,000 followers, they get eight free dishes; while the Pittarellos will offer the whole meal to major influencers who have more than 100,000 followers. SCIENCE

MARCHESAN AND VACCHIANO, TWO OF THE BEST YOUNG RESEARCHERS IN THE WORLD Silvia Marchesan, of the University of Trieste, and Giorgio Vacchiano, of the University of Milan, were selected by Nature magazine among the 11 leading up-and-coming researchers making their mark in science across disciplines in the natural sciences. They were chosen among 500 researchers from around the world who have published at least one article in the 82 journals of the Nature Index (which tracks the affiliations of high-quality scientific articles) in 2017 and whose first scientific paper appeared less than 20 Years ago.Silvia Marchesan, the ‘mini-molecule manipulator’, is associate professor of the Department of Organic Chemistry, and she developed cost-effective and effective hydrogels made of self-assembling proteins that can be used for repairing body tissues and releasing drugs.Graduated in Trieste in 2004, Marchesan completed a Ph.D. in Chemistry in Edinburgh and continued her research career in London, Finland, and Australia. In 2013, she returned in Italy and two years later she obtained the public research funds that allowed her to open her own laboratory at the University of Trieste.Vacchiano, the ‘forest modeler‘, is a researcher at the Department of Agricultural Sciences in Milan’s Statale University. The focuses of his work are: forest management, for which he has paved the way for the use of mathematical models; the resistance and resilience of forests to climate change; and the consequences of forest fires and other “natural disturbances” on European temperate forests. Vacchiano spent 15 months working on forest modeling for the European Commission before joining the Statale University in February 2018. John Daporto

CAR

PININFARINA’S PF0, THE PERFECT MIX OF DESIGN, LUXURY, AND SUSTAINABILITY Automobili Pininfarina revealed the first official images of the PF0, the temporary name of the electric hypercar prototype that the new automotive brand will unveil to the public during 2019. The occasion was the Monterey Car Week, in Pebble Beach, California, with a limited number of lucky people who were able to take part in a first launch event. To find out the name of the first Automobili Pininfarina’s car, it will be necessary to wait until March 2019, when the new hypercar will be revealed at the Geneva International Motor Show. In the meantime, the first images do not reveal much, but it is possible to see that the innovative car will be perfectly in line with the high standards of the famous Italian design brand, with the usual extreme attention to details and the line will be extreme. Michael Perschke, CEO of Automobili Pininfarina, said: “For a new automaker, this launch in the United States has been extremely stimulating, exciting and ultimately rewarding. Our guests at Pebble Beach were passionate about classic, performing cars and felt that the PF0 design combined the right balance between beauty and functional visual performance. They came to see a classic Pininfarina and they were not disappointed.” While, Automobili Pininfarina Design Director Luca Borgogno, explained: “Our ambition for the PF0 is based on the classic Pininfarina principles: combining elegance and beauty with a functional design that defines a new vision of the product. From 2020, the world will see the emergence of luxury electric hypercars that will set new standards of performance.” Marco Bertollini

ALL ABOUT ITALY | Winter is here

Can’t wait to launch yourself down some of the most celebrated ski slopes in Italy? Do you consider yourself an “ambassador of the snow plow” but still want to get good at this sport? Here are our recommendations for the winter season

Winter at high-altitude

T

he Alps are not just a gathering place for expert skiers, but a great place for amateurs who try to do their best in this sport. At the end of the day, it does not matter if you skied the way you had planned, or you spent some “cozy” moments in a mountain hut in front of a lit fireplace sipping hot chocolate. Or, you ventured out on a high-altitude hike. So, for those on track to becoming the next Alberto Tomba - the first Italian Alpine skier to win medals at three Olympic Winter Games - and for those who are simply trying to stay upright, the charm of the mountain is something to be experienced.

Madonna di Campiglio Madonna di Campiglio is one of those winter destinations we’ve heard about since childhood. Italians grew with the “myth” of this place. It’s also the destination of many VIPs who every winter flock to its ski slopes. Madonna di Campiglio gained its fame in the 70’s and to this day still retains its aura in all seasons but especially in winter. Surrounded by the Brenta Dolomite mountains, the views in this region are to die for. Madonna di Campiglio is a stone’s throw from the extensive Adamello Brenta Nature Reserve. It’s an ideal starting point for many hiking and cross-country skiing trails. Whether you want to experience the thrill of speed on the celebrated slopes, or want to enjoy a quiet excursion admiring the wonderful nature in this area, Madonna di Campiglio is a destination for everyone.
