Welcome to the August edition of All About ‘West of the Hills’.

As I write this it is only a few days away from the school summer holidays. The children are excited and parents are starting to plan how to keep them entertained for more than six weeks. Personally, I am making sure I have the time to have fun with my family whilst still managing to put together the September edition of the magazine. It’s a good job I like challenges! In this edition you will find many different ideas on how to spend your free time. There are two pages of What’s On information, where I have included events that happen around the area, and many businesses letting you know what they have coming up this month. One event that caught my attention is a brand new idea for West Malvern, an Art Festival based on a French idea. You will read all about it on page 16, I hope you have the time to go and enjoy it. It sounds like fun! As a native of the Netherlands I often pinch myself as a reminder of what a beautiful area we live in, somewhere that’s a holiday destination for many other people. We have it on our doorstep! I am looking forward making the most of it this summer, and hope you do too.
Have a Sunny August Sascha

This year sees the 35th anniversary of a group in Colwall that’s become a cornerstone of village life. Bright Sparks pre-school began in 1975 and since then many hundreds of children have attended the many thousands of sessions that have been held in the village hall. ‘People definitely feel a lot of affection for Bright Sparks’ says Jean Holley, one of the dedicated team who help run the group. ‘In fact my babies are now coming back with babies of their own!’ Jean was ‘roped in as a volunteer’ almost 30 years ago after moving into a house almost opposite Colwall Village Hall. ‘There wasn’t much else around back then’ she tells me. The name for the group was chosen through a competition, after starting life as ‘Colwall Playgroup’ by

our activity’. ‘Children can start with us at the age of two and a half, and continue until they start school. We can help all children including those who have special needs.’ Bright Sparks has always run from the village hall, but now there’s an ambitious plan to move into new accommodation adjacent to the local primary school. Jean Bryant, who’s the Chair of Bright Sparks is overseeing the plan and says it should offer a fantastic facility for families in the area. ‘Its all very exciting!’ she says, ‘we and the school hope very much to bring about even greater co-operation and

Carol Davies and a group of volunteers, too many to mention here. ‘We’ve grown quite a bit since then,’ says Jean, ‘expectations are different these days, we have many criteria to fulfill including Ofsted inspections’. But the group’s core ideal remains the same. ‘We believe in learning through play and always have done, the children learn so much through play. Over the years we’ve added to and renewed much of the play equipment. We’ve had donations, and bought new toys through a lot of fundraising which is a continuous part of

links by being based next to each other. Plans have been drawn up for the longer term with additional Primary School classrooms, but with current financial restraints we may have to accept a slightly scaled down model for the short term at least. There’s no strict time scale but we’re very keen for it to happen as soon as possible’ Jean says. In the meantime the group continues to use the village hall in Colwall and is grateful for the versatile premises that allows them to provide so many lively activities. There are 26 children on the books at the moment, and still some spaces for the autumn term. If parents would like to find out more they can call Jean Holley on (01684) 540061.

trips as well as winning a county challenge competition called The Trek for two years running. But like all youth organisations it cannot survive without its team of volunteer leaders and the Tigger ESU unit in Colwall urgently need a new leader to join and head up the team. Like all roles within scouting it does mean a bit of commitment but the rewards are well worth it. At the moment the Unit meets on Fridays so if you believe that you have time and the ability to inspire, support, motivate and lead young people please contact me, Adrian Ward, on (01684) 541250 or email malvern.desc@talktalk.net.

Scouting in the Malverns has been going strong for many years, I myself started in Scouting in Colwall as a Wolf Cub back in 1967 and then went on to Scouts. After a brief spell in the forces I went back to the Group and became a Leader of the older section which was then Venture Scouts. With the big change that happened in 2002 with Scouting I found myself as District Explorer Scout Commissioner for the Malverns District. The Explorer Scout Unit in Colwall, called Tigger ESU, has now been operating for nearly two years. Since its formation we have been on many challenging activities including a number of camping

Scouting has been in Colwall for nearly a hundred years, but in order for it to continue we need volunteers who have skills and talents; people who work, people who are retired, people who have children, people who don’t, people who like to organise, people who like to play games, people who like to keep records, people who have been Scouts, people who haven’t…the list of people we need is endless and the number of people we need is evergrowing. Beautiful Skin So you think beauty is only skin deep? It actually goes much deeper. Beauty has a lot to do with your diet says our resident health expert Allison Maxwell from Colwall. Beautiful skin is healthy skin. As we age, collagen and the skin’s natural protective barriers tend to break down and we end up losing moisture and firmness; the two vital components of healthy, glowing skin. The most beneficial method to get glowing, healthy skin is to begin from the inside out. Stop drinking sodas and coffee which contain high amounts of caffeine. Caffeine is a diuretic, which causes an increase in urine output, contributing to the depletion of moisture from your skin and body. Wrinkles and lines will become more defined if your skin is suffering from a lack of moisture. Trying to combat this by using moisturisers is not the best solution. Putting moisture into your body will do more for you in the long run. You truly do need to drink plenty of pure water, un-processed fruit juice or coconut milk! Coconuts are thought to be anti-viral, anti-fungal and anti-microbial. Lauric acid which is contained in coconuts is also used to heal digestive tract disorders such as Leaky Gut Syndrome. Since it regulates the functioning of the intestine, the coconut water can help achieve a smoother and more radiant skin.
Other requirements for a Radiant Skin Antioxidants. These protect your skin from the damaging effects of UV radiation. Foods high in antioxidants include green
12
tea, berries and citrus fruits. Selenium. This mineral is used by your body to create a protein with antioxidant properties. The absolute best source for selenium is a handful of brazil nuts. If you can’t find those, other nuts will do. Fish, turkey, wholewheat pasta and brown rice will also help, but nothing compares to nuts! Omega-3 Fatty Acids. Omega-3 maintains healthy cell membranes to keep your cells hydrated and free of toxins. Hemp and flax oil are excellent sources of Omega-3. Wild salmon, walnuts and sardines can also give your skin cells a boost. Vitamin C. Glowing skin blooms with a diet of citrus fruits, mangoes, kiwis, tomatoes, broccoli, red peppers, and even baked potatoes, all of which contain a healthy dose of vitamin C. In addition to nutrition yoga is not only good for the muscles, it can actually improve your skin. Some practitioners swear by the anti-ageing benefits of yoga’s inverted poses. The benefits are produced in two ways; firstly, circulation is stimulated, so that oxygen-rich blood flushes the body with good nutrients and removes toxins. Secondly, you become more relaxed in the course of a yoga session, so there’s less tension and muscle contraction in your face. Try Downward Dog and Lion Face, just open your mouth wide and roar!
Allison Maxwell has an MSc in Public Health Nutrition, a BSc in Nutrition & Food Science and 20 years experience in the field of food and nutrition. If you need advice ring 07771694490 for Private Nutritional Consultations.

All About... ...The West Malvern Arts Festival Laurie Gregory from West Malvern came up with the idea for an arts festival after seeing a similar event in France. From Friday 20th August until Sunday 22nd August visitors can follow a trail around West Malvern, and view or buy the art on display.
Tell us about the idea behind the festival.
The idea was conceived in France and is based on an Arts Festival run in a small and ancient village in Southern Normandy called Saint-Cénerie-le-Gérie. Our Festival will feature the work of up to 50 artists. A small Festival Committee, made up of eight people, has been established to help ensure it’s success.
And where will the art be on display?
enthusiasm at a local level which is most encouraging.
W ho’s involved? A large proportion of the village is involved
either as volunteers and helpers, venue hosts or as visitors to the festival, and we hope it will become an annual event with growing interest and support. Children will also be involved in the festival, including the WEST MALVERN opportunity to produce their own art under Arts Festival supervision at the 20th to 22nd August 2010 village school.
The Festival will follow some aspects of the french model by using garages, gazebos and living rooms in which to display the work, but we’ll also benefit thanks to the use of the Brewer’s Arms pub, St James’ C of E Primary School, St James’ Church and the Elim College. We’re hoping the artists will be closely grouped together between the Brewer’s Arms and the College, a distance of about 200 yards.
IWest s this a good place to display art? Malvern is delightfully situated on the western slopes of the hills and is likely to lend itself well to this festival. There’s never been an event like this here to our knowledge, but our area does attract a wide range of artists and those that appreciate art. There is much
What kind of Art can we expect?
All kinds of visual arts, the majority will be painters, we’ve got a little bit of sculpture, photography, jewellery, some weaving and some calligraphy.
Where does any profit from sales of art go?
The artists are free to exhibit and there’s no admission charge for the public. Where items are sold, we hope the artist will make a contribution of 15 percent to the Malvern Hills Foundation. This is a registered charity, set up in 2005, which we hope can build up a significant pot of money to benefit local causes in years and decades to come.
If you'd like to attend the West Malvern Arts Festival, look out for signposting to the event around the village between 20th & 22nd August. A programme for the event will also be available.

Green Fingers School Gardens
Hello there. This month I thought I would write something about the Royal Horticultural Society’s Campaign for School Gardening. Over the last 20 years at Caves Folly we have been encouraging young people to grow plants and work in the nursery. Many school children have left us with their imaginations running riot, after I asked them to go away and draw pictures of what they thought worms could compost! Teenagers on work experience have learned about being considerate with people and plants. Some former young employees have gone on to study and work in horticulture. One young lad I met in Ledbury some years afterwards told me that he now worked as a welder, but that he really enjoyed working on the nursery and was now growing vegetables in his parents garden! When I read about the RHS’s Campaign for School Gardens, I was delighted that such a prestigious charity was reaching out to young people from all backgrounds. The scheme encourages schools to
22
create gardens, teach the skills of growing plants and in turn enable pupils to learn outside the classroom. Many children, especially in inner city areas have no immediate connection with the natural world. It is essential if we are to survive as a society that children are taught to appreciate and respect the natural world. This campaign is helping provide an environment for all levels of learning, and most importantly providing a practical and visual learning experience for children who are not academic. So if you are a teacher or a parent why not suggest that your school investigates this opportunity. You can contact the Royal Horticularal Society by calling 0845 260 5000 or logging on to http://apps.rhs.org.uk/schoolgardening/
