David V Jones & Associates Spinal and Musculo-skeletal Therapy In Malvern

Registered Osteopaths with over 50 years experience between us

Non specific low back pain About 80 % of adults will suffer low back pain at some point during their lifetimes. In acute cases over 90% are classed as non specific low back pain. What is it? When no definite problem or disease can be identified using a full range of medical tests, then the pain in the low back is categorized as “non specific”. This doesn’t mean that the pain is imagined or doesn’t really exist. It just means that no current medical investigation can ascertain the exact cause. What really causes it? In reality there are many specific causes for “non specific” back pain. Spasmed, tightened or torn muscles will create pain, as will overstretched ligaments. A minutely bulging disc that doesn’t show on MRI scan may nonetheless cause pain through nerve irritation. The facet joints which control the movements of the spine can also malfunction and cause pain as they too have a significant nerve supply. Pain can be referred to the back from other structures and even the nerves themselves can become injured and create neuropathic pain. What can be done? As osteopaths we see an enormous number of cases

of non specific low back pain. Although all osteopaths are trained to perform a range of medical tests we also perform our own sort of examination of the spine and surrounding tissues. This involves detailed assessment of the movements of the spine as well as postural considerations. We then focus on palpation of the tissues. This means using a skilled sense of touch which can frequently point us towards the structure that is causing symptoms. This is where we differ from some other forms of treatment and why osteopaths are popular. A recent study found that amongst osteopathic patients, 96% had confidence in osteopathic treatment and advice. Treatment Osteopathic treatment is very much hands on. Very specific soft tissue work, as well as different forms of spinal manipulation, is used to coax joints back into action and free off overly tight muscles. This type of approach has been tried and tested over the ages and is often the first type of treatment used by top sports people. We often combine the traditional treatments with high tech equipment and mix in other modalities such as medical acupuncture in order to achieve the best results possible.

Orchard Lodge Clinic is privately run by David Jones, GOsC Registered Osteopath and associates. All treatments are drug-free and use techniques recommended by the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence. Initial consultation (with treatment) costs £50. Follow-up sessions £42.

live at home scheme

As we get older, there are many reasons why we might feel lonely. Family and friends move away, perhaps a husband, wife or partner is lost, or illness makes it harder to get out and about. In St John’s, there’s a well-established charity that tackles loneliness in older people. The West Worcester Live at Home Scheme organises a big range of activities, events and get togethers, which it has been doing for the past 25 years. Elaine Harper manages the scheme and runs through their busy schedule. ‘On Monday and Thursday we run a lunch club. We also have a seated exercise class on a Thursday, we organise escorted shopping trips and there’s even a singing group. We also hold Afternoon Teas with entertainers and there’s an outing or a trip once a month. We visit all kinds of places and spend an enjoyable day out in friendly company.’ Every August, a Vintage Tea Party is organised, where the best vintage china is brought out and a grand afternoon tea is laid on, together with music from the Worcester Ukulele Group. ‘It’s a lovely day’ says Elaine, ‘people bring their families along and some even have a dance!’ As if that wasn’t enough, they’re about to launch ‘Deli and Dance’, a ballroom dance class followed by a tea, generously supported by The Bake House in Lowesmoor. There’s also a new ballroom and light dance class beginning in Ombersley every other Tuesday. Alongside the social activities is a befriending scheme for people less able to get out and about. ‘It’s quite straightforward’ says Elaine. ‘After a

referral, we visit you at home and see what would work for you. We match you with a volunteer who might have a similar background or interests to you and then you can decide when you’d like them to visit.’ Like many organisations, its success is thanks not only to the staff but also the many volunteers who keep things running. ‘Some of our volunteers are retired, others are much younger, and we even have one 16 year old who looks after some of our marketing activities’ says Elaine. ‘We rely on fundraising to run our services. There is help from The MHA, of whom we are a part, and money from various trusts including the Eveson Charitable Trust who have supported us for many years.’ For some of the people who come along, it is truly a lifeline. Joan is 83 years old, is St John’s born and bred, and has been coming for 9 years. She lost her husband Albert after 52 years of marriage and suddenly, living on her own, had very little contact with anybody. ‘I didn’t like being on my own’ says Joan, ‘so I joined Live at Home and it really did save my life.’ WHAT: West Worcester Live at Home WHERE: Based at Bromyard Road Methodist Church in St John's (WR2 5DL) GET IN TOUCH: (01905) 420805 ONLINE: www.mha.org.uk or on facebook, @westworcesterliveathome

Group

handmade in hallow Now almost five years old, Handmade in Hallow is a friendly local crafting group that meets regularly in the village. Stella Reeve, who is one of its founder members, tells us more. We think that our logo ‘Handmade in Hallow’ gives a bit of a clue about what we do and where we do it, but some people have asked to know a bit more about how we started and what our plans are, so here goes! In late 2014, a small group of ladies started to meet in Hallow Scout Hut, with the aim of making hand crafted gifts and decorations to sell at the Hallow Church Christmas Fair. Handmade in Hallow was born and we look forward to celebrating our 5th anniversary in September. We have grown to 30 members, all ladies at the moment but gentlemen are always welcome too. We meet monthly from January to June and in September, October and November. Meetings at Hallow Scout Hut begin at 10.45am with refreshments, ready to start at 11am and finishing at 12.30pm. There is a £10 subscription for nine meetings in the year. We have a planned programme, including speakers and demonstrators from outside the group as well as group members who share their own expertise. Dates for the coming year are 12th April, 17th May, 21st June, 20th September, 18th October, 15th November. We are also planning an outing one day in the summer.

In the past we have had a go at many different crafts including paper crafts, book folding, beading, felting, flower arranging, knitted prayer squares and shawls and numerous items for Christmas decorations. We also include one or two social mornings for a ‘knit ‘n natter’. We like to support local charities by making items we can give away. For example, last year we made many ‘fidget’ cuffs and blankets for dementia patients in local nursing homes. This year we hope to support the Footsteps charity who work with bereaved children and their families in Worcestershire. Come and hear more about that at our meeting in April. The group is very much part of the Hallow community and we are keen to take part in village events. We were especially pleased to be busy making poppies for the Remembrance Day commemoration in church. We enjoy holding sales in the pre-Christmas period and this year promises to be our busiest yet, with events at Park Heath, The Firs nursing home, Hallow church Christmas Fair, the Hallow Community Group seniors tea and more tbc! The money raised from these sales ensures that we can remain as an autonomous and self-funding group.

You are very welcome to come and join us – we are an informal and friendly group. No experience necessary! To find out more please contact: Stella Reeve on (01905) 640982.

heritage grain When Dave Outhwaite wanted to malt his own grain to make homebrew, he ran into a problem. Modern varieties of viable grain, ready for growing, can only be bought in large quantities, which isn’t much use to an enthusiastic homebrewer. When he began to look further, Dave realised the grains developed for modern farming techniques didn’t really match his needs. ‘Modern varieties are ‘short straw’, with just a few types sown in huge quantities. This isn’t how things were done a couple of centuries ago - farmers would keep a blend of their best grain for planting the following year, seed was shared between farms and a large variety of grains might be sown in the same field.’ Three years ago, the UK Seed Library sent Dave just a few grains of heritage varieties, which he sowed at The Fold in Bransford. After two years, he was harvesting several kilos of grain and, if all goes to plan this year, he could be harvesting a lot more again, all derived from those few original seeds. ‘Half of it is wheat’ says Dave, ‘I’m growing some barley for the homebrew and there are oats which are fed to our chickens. Each year I make enquiries about different varieties which are available. The French seed library has a UK grain from the 1830s. Likewise, the American seed library has a variety called Michigan Amber. These are all types of grain sent from this country abroad more than two centuries ago, which I am now planning to try out.’

‘The ground is a medium-heavy Teme valley clay and we need a week or two of dry weather before we can start planting in March or April’ says Dave. ‘As it ripens, the birds begin to take an interest so we have to keep them away. When it’s ready to harvest, a prolonged period of wet weather can ruin it.’ Despite all these hurdles, Dave is optimistic about the coming season. ‘I need to discover which varieties are best for baking bread or brewing, so we need to grow enough to experiment with. At the end of harvest time this year, we’re planning a ceilidh with music, food and dance – a proper harvest celebration event.’

There are pros and cons to growing old varieties of grain. Once planted, they don’t need a lot of fertiliser and can be more hardy. Dave describes them as ‘mongrel’ rather than ‘pedigree’ varieties which are robust nonetheless. Growing them is a labour-intensive process. At least fifteen people have been involved in the project at The Fold, preparing a quarter-acre plot for sewing, then caring for the growing crop and finally harvesting it. Many things can go wrong.

Well-Being

Natural Order, Balance and Well-Being The Therapy Centre, The Fold, Bransford With spring in full swing and daylight saving time just around the corner we are reminded of the beautiful natural order of the world. Life is built on cycles and repetition of cycles. It is said that the more we have rhythm in our lives, the more we have well-being and some say that it is hard to be in a state of peace without rhythm. We see evidence of these natural rhythms in the seasons, farming, plant and animal life. The most predominant daily rhythm in our lives is the sleep-wake cycle. This and other daily rhythms make up ‘circadian rhythms’; 24 hour cycles governed by our internal clock. Our bodies are inextricably linked with the natural circadian rhythms and scientists say that our health is dependent on harmonising with these rhythms. Our ‘system’ performs optimally when we have regular exercise, sleep and meal times. Even babies in the womb develop regular sleep-wake cycles. The delicate balance of our bodies can be very easily disrupted. Chronobiology or the study of the human body clock tells us that synchronisation with our natural rhythms is more important to our health and wellbeing than was previously thought. What are the health implications of modern day living with our increased access to social media, entertainment and a mobile office 24/7? Combined with the use of caffeine, alcohol, fast food and modern day medication, is modern living interfering with our most basic natural human rhythms? Someone with a body clock that is out of whack can expect to experience increased risk of a range of conditions, for example; obesity, diabetes, anxiety, depression, infertility, memory difficulties, headaches, fibromyalgia, an increase in chronic pain including worsening of arthritis pain.

There are steps that we can take to support our natural rhythms: 1. Spend time outdoors in the mornings; exposure to sunlight boosts serotonin, the brain chemical associated with good mood. 2. Take a ‘siesta’; post lunch ‘slump’ is a part of normal circadian rhythm and research has shown that a 30 – 40 minute nap can be helpful! 3. Eat within an 8 – 10 hour period to help your body synchronise with natural circadian rhythms. This allows the body 12 – 14 hours to restore and repair. 4. Create regular sleep, exercise and meal time routines. 5. Review your intake of sugar, alcohol, caffeine and processed food. 6. Avoid electronics an hour before bed. Screen lighting suppresses the production of the sleepy hormone melatonin. 7. Create a cool and dark bedroom. If life is feeling frantic, chaotic or stressful for you, your child or your family, you may wish to look at the rhythm of your personal world and see if you can introduce more balance. Don’t be afraid to reach out and ask for support in restoring the balance in your life. Dr Elise Kearney (Consultant Clinical Psychologist)

All About...

fossils cricket What began as a casual suggestion over two decades ago, is today a successful cricket team that welcomes older players. The Fossils Cricket team was the brainchild of John Reynolds, who tells us more.

How did it all begin? We started in 1995, in a year when our founding members all reached the grand old age of 50! I was at the dinner for what was the Malvern Wells Cricket Club and I overheard someone say what a shame it was that older people couldn’t get a game. I replied, ‘Why don’t you start an over 50s side then?’ and wandered off, not thinking anything more of it. Before the end of the evening, a guest said to me ‘Let me know when you start the over 50s side, and I’ll play.’ The next day I’m walking up the Shambles in Worcester and someone said exactly the same thing! A few more days go past, and I’m phoned by a friend asking ‘when are you starting this team?’ Thinking about it some more, I realised I knew lots of people in and around Worcester of a similar age who could play. Originally, I thought we could play a couple of games, which turned into twelve in the first year. Since then its grown to the point where this year’s fixture list has 45 games, including a fourgame tour of Wales.

How does the team operate today? The Fossils Cricket Team doesn’t have a permanent home. We play at Birlingham (near Pershore) and at Malvern Cricket Club. This year we’ll also be playing at The Nomads ground in Bransford. All ages are welcome to play in our friendly games, while older players take part in national league games for teams varying from over 50s to over 70s. These take place on a county basis. We also play against teams from Warwickshire, Somerset, Wiltshire and Leicestershire. Until three years ago I was managing everything, but it was getting a little too much with up to three games a week to organise. Brian Norfolk and Paul Thompson stepped in and now run the mid-week teams. I help with Sunday fixtures along with Martin Woodward.

26

Is cricket a game you can continue to enjoy as you get older? Without a doubt, Fossils cricket certainly suits the older player. It’s not only about winning but about enjoying each and every game. It’s also about the camaraderie, playing a game with like-mind people of your own age and with the same sense of humour. Nobody worries if you drop a catch or the ball hurtles past you. We always try our best but there’s no point wasting energy on getting irate!

Are new players welcome? Absolutely, and although we are ‘fossils’, players of any age are very welcome to come and play in our friendlies. We have kick-started the cricketing careers of many young players who have gone on to play and even captain other local teams. The league games are open to the older players and there’s always space for a new face. If you’d like to find out more, then give John a call on (01905) 427007

Recipe

meg's fruit fool from Meg at Roots Family Farm Shop My cookery repertoire is more than smattered with recipes which allow me to respond to the seasons and the availability of seasonal produce. This dessert is a perfect example, one which can be adapted to whichever fruit is in season. Making a fruit compote, poaching or roasting the fruit is the place to start. I wouldn’t add sugar until I have tasted the fruit for natural sweetness. Sometimes it is surprising how little additional sugar is needed when the fruit is in season. Made ahead, these desserts will sit perfectly in a refrigerator for twenty-four hours before you need to serve, dressing at the last moment.

Ingredients 250ml double cream 250g natural Greek yoghurt (a good one!) 500g rhubarb (or seasonal fruit) Honey or caster sugar to taste

Early to late spring is the perfect time for rhubarb. Tall, slim sticks of peachy pink rhubarb emerge from the soil reaching up to the light unfurling their lime coloured leaves, but not before they have been plucked from the ground. Harvested early like this, the delicate flavour and natural sweetness are sublime. Begin with preparing the fruit. Rinse, top and tail the stems of rhubarb then cut them into chunks of about 4cm. Lay them out in a single layer on a baking sheet or a large dish, sprinkle with a little caster sugar or honey and 50ml of water. Roast in a preheated oven at 170ÂşC for twenty minutes until the pieces are soft but holding their shape. Lift the rhubarb pieces carefully out of the dish with a slotted spoon, allowing the juice to drain away from the fruit and place it in a separate bowl to cool. Pour the juices into a small saucepan and carefully reduce the liquid until it is syrupy. Allow to cool fully and then transfer to a small jug. Chill until serving. Whip the double cream to soft peaks and fold in the yoghurt. Reserve a little of the fruit to dress the top of the fool before serving. Fold the rest of the fruit through the creamy base. Now you must taste the fool. You may need to add a little more sugar or honey to sweeten a little more. Fill the serving dishes, small wine glasses are ideal and chill for at least an hour before serving. When you are ready to serve, dress the top of the fool with the remaining fruit and a drizzle of syrup. Serve with a crispy ginger biscuit, a brandy snap or a tuile on the side.

Theatre News Oscar Wilde’s

The Picture of Dorian Gray Tilted Wig Productions are proud to present an exciting and bold new production of Oscar Wilde’s The Picture of Dorian Gray starring Jonathan Wrather, known for his roles on both stage and screen, as Lord Henry Wotton. The play, based on the classic novel, celebrates Wilde’s wonderful language and will appeal to audiences old and new. The Picture of Dorian Gray tells the story of a cultured, wealthy, and beautiful young man’s downfall through moral corruption and seduction. Dorian, who, fearing that his good looks would fade as he grows old, wishes that a portrait painted of him could bear the burden of the ageing process, leaving him forever young. But at what cost...? Featuring Wilde’s famous wit and a stellar cast, The Picture of Dorian Gray is a fast-paced thriller that will keep you on the edge of your seat right up until the final scenes of the play – providing an entertaining night out for all. The Picture of Dorian Gray will be appearing on stage at Malvern Theatres from Tuesday 7th to Saturday 11th May. Tickets are on sale at the Box Office 01684 892277 and online at malvern-theatres.co.uk
