2019 starts for us with a 10 year celebration - we have been publishing All About Magazines for a decade this March. Quite a milestone. You can read about my independent publishing story on Page 36. Some of our long standing advertisers have sent in testimonials of what All About has done for them over the years. I feel very privileged to have played a part in supporting our thriving local business community.

Enjoy the read and here’s to the next 10 years of All About!

MALVERN CUBE PROJECTS Malvern Cube Projects aim to empower young people to be resilient and fulfil their potential. Volunteers are needed (over 18 years) to support a youth worker. Activities will be dependent on the wishes of the young people but are likely to include craft, cooking, art, physical activity, outdoor activities, developing resilience, drama, gaming and films. The roles offered are very diverse and adaptable to the skills and interests of any volunteers. The youngsters are mainly age 11 – 14, although may extend to older groups. News BARNARDS GREEN HISTORY GROUP Barnards Green History Group has uncovered a stash of old paperwork, which gives a fascinating insight into local trades a century ago. ‘We were given over 30 invoices and receipts from Mr Grant Morgan of Morgan’s blacksmiths, Upper Chase Road’ says Barbara Hartley-Woolley. ‘These are mostly dated from the 1920s and show what local people were ordering and buying from traders who lived in and around Barnards Green at that time. We have taken some of the accounts, researched them in a wider social history context, and compiled an interesting and thought-provoking display for public enjoyment.’ The display will take place later this year. In the meantime, the group’s book book ‘Barnards Green – Then and Now –A history of the shops’ has sold well. £1,600 raised from sales has been donated to The Barnards Green Traders Association, as a contribution to their chosen charitable causes. If you’d like more details of the group or book, email bghistorygroup@gmail.com or drop a letter off at ‘Just So’ in Barnards Green

Business News

Wish you had happier feet? Daily wear and tear takes its toll on your feet. Foot pain can be debilitating leading to difficulties with walking and exercise. Taking routine care of your feet can help avoid serious problems. An annual foot health check is as important as a sight or hearing test, as conditions such as diabetes or circulatory problems can be detected by examining the feet. Common problems include: bunions, clawing of the toes, heel pain and fungal infections. Over time we lose the fatty pads that cushion the bottom of our feet, skin becomes drier and we get pressure lesions such as hard skin and corns. Nails can become thickened and more difficult to manage.Uncomfortable feet are not something to ‘put up with’, much can be done to improve comfort, relieve pain and maintain mobility. At the Malvern Foot Clinic we can assist you with every aspect of your foot health care from nail cutting through to foot surgery. In January we welcomed a new member of the team, Andy Miles. Andy is a podiatrist with over 25 years of experience working for both the NHS and in private practice. This means we can offer more appointment times for your convenience. Book today for a foot health check or treatment and let us help you achieve happier feet! 01684 893 820

Charity

Tools for self reliance As a charity, Malvern Hills Tools for SelfReliance has a simple but life-changing goal. Its volunteers gather unwanted tools which are refurbished and sent to parts of the world where they make a real difference. Martin Blamire, the group’s Chair, tells us more. Firstly, a huge thanks to the many people who have donated tools and supported us so far, especially Malvern Seed Swap and Malvern Rotary Club. Please keep them coming! The generous donations of unwanted tools made last year have enabled the charity to send many hundreds of refurbished hand-tools plus almost £1,000 to projects in Malawi, Tanzania, Sierra Leone, Ghana, Uganda and Zambia. We have already sent three full loads of refurbished tools and sewing machines to the head office of Tools for Self-Reliance in Southampton and onwards to partners in Africa. Through local sales of surplus items, we have also sent cheques towards the purchase of welding kits and to support a new project in Sierra Leone.

We now have five regular volunteers at our Wednesday morning sessions where we sort and refurbish. There are two priorities for 2019 - to find a larger workshop and to increase the size of our group, bringing new skills and ideas. We especially need to build a Sales Team to hold sales at local events and raise money from selling tools not presently needed in Africa. At present it is mainly tools for carpenters or mechanics and sewing machines that are being urgently requested by our partner projects in Africa, but please call me to discuss whatever you would like to donate or if you would like to join us. If you’d like to find out more about how to donate or help the local group, call Martin on (01684) 540491. You can also visit the national charity’s website:

the SUMMER CAMPS TRUST In the USA and Canada, France, Sweden, and many other countries, one of the highlights of a child’s year is a week or two enjoying the outdoors at Summer Camp. This is something Chris Green is well-aware of. As a student, he worked on summer camps in France and noticed the benefits to the children who took part. Back in the UK he set up Colony Holidays to offer a similar experience. Later on, he set up another organisation, Active Training and Education, with similar aims.

Later this year, the first six residential summer camps will take place, offering highly affordable places to five hundred children. This Easter, there is also the chance to train as a summer camp volunteer, with up to 70 places on a residential course taking place in Herefordshire. In 2011 Chris Green was awarded an MBE for his work in education. Now in his eighties, the enthusiasm and drive is un-dimmed. ‘What we’re trying to do could be enormously influential’ he says. ‘Society is getting more fractured and divided and to bring children from all sorts of backgrounds together would work wonders.’

Now at an age when most people have long retired, Chris decided the need is as great as ever and has set up The Summer Camps Trust. As a former teacher who worked at The Chase High School, he is well aware of the benefits for young people. ‘Parents say how wonderful it is and see a transformation in their children. On the other hand, it’s hard to persuade many parents to send their children away. I lobbied providers in the outdoor education sector to see if we could form a national body and the outcome is the Summer Camps Trust.’ The plan is ambitious – to offer a seven-day camp for £245 and to double the number of young people taking part in summer camps within five years. The trust represents some of the UK’s biggest providers of residential camps and has a board of trustees of prominent names from the world of politics and outdoor education.

10 years of all about ‘So how did it start?’ is a question I am often asked when people find out I run All About Magazines. Until 2009 my working life was spent in the voluntary sector, but with the arrival of two small children work had to change, which is when the idea of starting a community magazine came along. I really liked the fact a magazine could contribute something to the local community, while helping local businesses at the same time. I was nervous about the idea of starting a magazine, but I took the jump just before Christmas 2008. I gave myself two months to produce the first magazine in time for March and I spent £500 on software to create adverts and to layout the magazine. I had to quickly learn how to use the software and with the money invested, there was no going back! As soon as the New Year came, I had to start selling advertising space, to pay for the cost of

printing. Fortunately, local businesses loved the idea and so the first magazine went to print on time. Together with family and friends, we then delivered 2,500 magazines to homes around Cradley and Colwall. Things have grown a lot since then. Today we print 32,000 magazines, in three entirely unique editions covering St Johns and villages, Malvern and the area West of the Hills. My job is still designing the adverts, laying out the magazine pages, chatting to local businesses and readers plus a hundred and one other tasks involved in running a small business. An idea that started in a back room, with just me and a computer, has today grown into a business employing five people, plus work for dozens of deliverers. Tina takes care of a lot of the sales of

Here is what some long standing customers have said: The book has been brilliant for promoting my business. To be honest, mainly due to its good reputation. I would highly recommend the book to anyone as it has generated a lot of work for me with customers then recommending my services to others. Thanks to Sascha and the team at All About Magazines for your help and support in helping to promote my local business. Congratulations on your 10 year anniversary. Wesley Small, W.S.S Roofing & Building Solutions Ltd 01684 541366 / 07926 861565 As a new business start-up, we were very grateful to Sascha and All About Magazines for finding an advertising package to suit our budget. The phone is always busy after the magazines hit the doormats and we really appreciate the business All About Magazines generate. Colin Hadley, Oven Wizards Hereford & Worcester West 01885 400337 / 07812 440780 I have been advertising with All About since they started 10 years ago, and have nothing but praise for Sascha and her team. They are consistently helpful and professional, and assist with any changes required very efficiently. I wish them every success for the coming 10 years and beyond. Matt Scriven, Branchworks Tree Surgery 36 808 121 / 01684 437481 07931

I knew when I saw the magazine back in 2009 it was a platform I wanted my business associated with, and I haven’t been disappointed. Sascha and her team have been fantastic to work with, they helped promote our business to the unsuspecting public in 2010 and we haven’t missed a month since. It has been a privilege and an honour to be part of such a fantastic product, thank you Sascha for your vision and delivery. Rob Weale, Smith Weale Associates, Independent Financial Advice Practice 01684 577037 We have supported each other from the beginning and the amount of business advertising in All About has generated for me over the years has been astronomical. I would never not advertise in the magazine. It raises my profile, its professional style and attitude fit my business values, it works hand in hand. Thank you very much Team All About, it has been brilliant to be part of the 10 year journey. Congratulations from Nick, That Smy Plumber - 07914 245015

advertising space and looks after our customers, Julie works from the office on finance, sales, our website and a host of other tasks. In 2013 my husband James came on board to look after the articles, What’s On listings, and magazine distribution, which is also managed by Mike in Malvern and Martin and Diane in Worcester. We are supported by a huge team of deliverers who walk the streets in all weathers to deliver the thousands of copies through the doors of homes each edition. A big thanks to all of them! I would genuinely like to thank the staff for their hard work and support over the years. It is only thanks to them that All About Magazines continues to thrive. There’s also a big thank you to you, dear reader, for reading the magazine and using the businesses and services advertised

in the magazine. Not only that, our readers contribute so much, from articles and events to ideas and comments about how we can constantly make the magazines even better. Last, but by no means least, I would like to thank our customers, the businesses and individuals who advertise with us. In ten years we have supported more than one thousand businesses locally, some of which are long-established, longterm customers and some who are starting up. We are proud to be a local, independent company, celebrating everything that’s good about the area. My work as magazine editor over the past decade has been a pleasure. I’m looking forward to the next ten years of supporting everything local!

Many many congratulations to Sascha and all the Team at All About Magazines on your 10th Anniversary. It’s a great achievement. (We are also celebrating 10 years of business in March too!) We have been advertising in the All About Magazines regularly for several years now – it’s so easy to work with Sascha to update our advert for each edition. Customers always mention they have seen our advert so we know it works for us... GOOD LUCK for the future and at least another 10 years of All About Magazines promoting all things local to our area. Mark, Newent Plant Centre - 01531 670 121 We have been delighted with the All About West of the Hills magazine and with the personal service Sascha has given us over the last ten years - in fact we find it hard to believe that ten years have gone by! The All About brand has gone from strength to strength and we regularly receive good quality leads as a result of our advertising. Sascha and the team are always on hand to help with any design or changes and pride themselves on giving the best of service to their clients, as we do to ours, and we wish them many more years of success! David V Jones & Associates Spinal and Musculo-skeletal Therapy In Malvern

Registered Osteopaths with over 50 years experience between us

Acute injury treatment: RICE or MEAT? Initially this may sound like a bizarre question. However RICE and MEAT in this context are acronyms. RICE stands for Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation and this has been the standard medical advice for many years when a patient has an acute injury such as an overstrained joint that is swollen and painful. MEAT on the other hand stands for Mobilization, Exercise, Analgesia and Treatment and this is an altogether new approach. RICE The idea behind this approach is to cut down the inflammatory process using the ice, reduce the swelling with a compression bandage, reduce fluid build by elevation of the affected limb and resting it to help it recover. Some people advocate using non steroidal anti-inflammatory medication too for further inflammation reduction. MEAT This approach is more about resuming normal activity as soon as possible, increasing movement quickly, not worrying about inflammation but merely controlling pain and getting early treatment to free things up quicker. So which approach is best? Clearly science has caught up with injury management. Previously it was thought best to reduce inflammation

as much as possible. However latest research suggests that inflammation is an important initial stage in the healing process. Infections, wounds and tissue damage would not be able to heal without an inflammatory response. Suppressing it with drugs or ice may ultimately slow down recovery. That is not to say that the RICE approach is always wrong. For example: Acute Compartment Syndrome can occur when an injured muscle swells within its fibrous sheath and can lead to permanent damage due to the pressure build up. In this instance ice would be useful initially to control swelling until the patient receives emergency hospital treatment. You should consult a medical professional before deciding whether RICE or MEAT is best for you. Personal perspective Some years ago I badly sprained my ankle playing squash. The next day the foot was black and blue and I could hardly weight bear when I got up. I did however have a bike ride pre-arranged which I decided to attend anyway. I could hardly get my cycling shoe on due to the swelling and felt that I shouldn’t really be participating. However the more I pedalled the better it felt. By the end of the 20 mile ride I could use my foot normally and the swelling had reduced. The next day the ankle felt better still and went on to make a very quick recovery. Anecdotal of course but maybe the science stacks up!?

Orchard Lodge Clinic is privately run by David Jones, GOsC Registered Osteopath and associates. All treatments are drug-free and use techniques recommended by the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence. Initial consultation (with treatment) costs £45. Follow-up sessions £40.

Well Being

asking for help Change for the better rarely comes from within. Left to our own devices we tend to go around in circles, thinking the same old thoughts, repeating the same old actions. We may be so stuck in these loops that we just think, “This is who I am.” Thankfully we don’t exist in isolation, otherwise we’d be stuck. Thinking of the times when I have changed for the better in my own life there has always been something from the outside that has made the difference. Sometimes it was that I was deeply listened to and felt understood, and in that understanding I was able to put down a burden. Sometimes it was that the consequences of my own foolish actions shouted so loudly I was jolted out of my usual habit patterns and into something different – into asking myself what have I done, and what could I have done differently. When I look back across my life it is often the most difficult times that have been the greatest teachers. Sometimes change came from taking myself to another place. When we are surrounded by the same people, the same things, and the same views, it is harder to get out of our stuck patterns. Once I was struggling with something a friend had done and I couldn’t shake my frustration. I took this frustration walking in the hills. It was the beginning of summer and a butterfly landed on the path in front of me. At first I didn’t notice it. As my loud footsteps got nearer it flew away, just for a moment, before coming to land on the path again. This time I noticed. My friend was as fragile as this butterfly I realised, and my heart softened. Sometimes changing our community can support healthy growth. My friends in recovery usually have to keep their distance from friends still in active addiction, for example. This kind of move on its own is not always enough and usually has to be alongside some personal reflection if it has any chance of lasting. Asking for help from another person is one of the most powerful conditions for change, particularly if you can find someone who is not invested in

40

By Kaspa Thompson any particular outcome for you, and can listen, understand and be a mirror for you. What stops us from asking for help? The first step is admitting that there is something we need help with. Perhaps we get a clue from seeing the consequences of our actions but not knowing how to change them, or perhaps from other people letting us know. We usually get stuck in the same old patterns Magic of Christmas Concert because there is some underlying fear about what might happen if we were to do something differently. Finding someone you trust can support you to change even though change can be scary. We may believe that it’s weak to ask for help. If we notice ourselves thinking this, or something like this, we can ask if it’s really true, or remind ourselves of where not asking for help has got us. Places to go for help: • Ask a friend or family member • Reach out to the Samaritans hotline: 116 123 • Talk to your GP • Join a supportive community • Book an appointment with a therapist or counsellor If we can overcome our resistance to asking for help we are doing one of things that is most supportive of change, growth and wellbeing.

All things BRIGHT & BEAUTIFUL Stuart Callister and Eve Winkler’s award winning, eco-friendly cleaning company keeps homes across Malvern sparkling… Your home is a special place. As a sanctuary from the outside world, it’s a place to relax and unwind, entertain friends and spend time with your family. For many people, however, there are simply not enough hours in the day to balance the demands of family, home and work, or perhaps you are retired and just need a helping hand. A tidy, clean and sparkling home creates a real sense of calm and order. Bright & Beautiful can help you keep it that way. Using a professional cleaning and housekeeping service is a great way to remove this burden and can be surprisingly affordable. That’s where Bright and Beautiful, a locally-based professional domestic cleaning and housekeeping service, can help as they provide eco-friendly cleaning, tidying, laundry and ironing to a consistently high standard, tailored to each client’s needs. Business owners Stuart Callister and Eve Winkler started their business as a result of finding it difficult to find a reliable and accountable cleaning service for their home. They now pride themselves in caring for and offering a personal and bespoke touch to families, business professionals and the retired people in the local Malvern area. Stuart and Eve’s trusted team of 16 local professional housekeepers are carefully selected, referenced and police checked and follow strict security procedures to give clients peace of mind, whilst keeping their homes safe.

“You might need a light clean to help getting on top of the house, or you might need everything from cleaning to laundry and ironing, but whatever your needs, we will always work to provide you with the best possible service to match your budget.” The company’s managed service means there is always someone available for feedback, and if you’d like anything to be done differently, or change the frequency of the service, you can give them a call to arrange this. “Our aim is to provide the best possible service in the Malvern area” says Stuart. ‘We take our customer feedback extremely seriously and are constantly looking at how we can continue to deliver an exceptional cleaning service that exceeds our clients’ expectations.” Not only does the Bright & Beautiful team deliver great service at the heart of the community, but they have also won some prestigious awards, including Bark Certificate of Service Excellence 2019 and West Midlands Enterprise’for Best Domestic Homecare Service 2018 in Worcestershire. Based at the company’s office in the high street in Malvern Link, Louise, the Client Service Coordinator is very happy to talk to you about how Bright & Beautiful can help you. Feel free to call or email Louise for a no-obligation chat. Please get in touch with Bright & Beautiful and see how they can help you: 01684 217 625 malvernadmin@brightandbeautifulhome.com www.brightandbeautifulhome.com/malvern-hills

“We make a point of using highly effective ecofriendly products and equipment which are kinder to the health of our clients, their children and our team members”, adds Stuart. “Our team is all trained in proper cleaning methods and bring all their cleaning products and equipment with them, taking the hassle away from our clients.”

All About...

malvern festival of ideas A notable line-up of speakers, alongside fun science demonstrations come to Malvern this March for the annual Festival of Ideas. The theme this year is ‘Crisis’ which will be explored in a series of talks, discussion and debate. The Arts and Science programme of events will appeal to curious minds of all ages. Andrew Webb helps to organise the festival and tells us more.

What are some of this year’s highlights? There are many highlights this year. Every session is special. We are particularly pleased that Lord David Owen will open the event for us. Professor Kate Pickett, co-author of Spirit Level, will prove very popular on Saturday afternoon at The Chase School, as will Professor Danny Dorling. Professor A.C. Grayling is coming back to Malvern and we expect that his session with the historian Dr Neil Faulkner will be fully booked. Professor Alastair McIntosh, co-author of Spiritual Activism, closes the session. Again, we expect a full house. The mathematics sessions are new and are specifically aimed at a general audience (teenage and above). We are hoping that there will be a lot of interest in those. All the talks are free. There is a charge for the Explorer Dome sessions taking place on the Saturday morning at Malvern Cube.

How is the event funded and who supports it? The event is largely funded by donation and some small grants. Attendees are asked to make donations at the sessions that they attend. We hope to cover costs. There is a small organising team, but many people are involved in the delivery of the event, in particular people at the various venues where the talks take place (The Chase School, St Matthias Church, Malvern Cube and The Friends Meeting House). Without their support the event could not happen. We are also very grateful to the Malvern Book Co-operative. All the presenters this year are authors and a bookstall will be available during the Festival. The event started as Malvern Science and Faith Weekend in 2012, but has evolved in scope and

54

reach since then. The 2019 event will be the eighth weekend. Each year, the audience has grown. We expect that many of the sessions this year will be fully booked, so book early! MALVERN FESTIVAL OF IDEAS - A programme of Crisis-themed speakers opened by Lord David Owen, with the philosopher Prof. AC Grayling, the author of ‘Spirit Level’ Prof. Kate Pickett and Prof. Dinesh Bhugra CBE who is President of the BMA. - Hands on Science and Art activities, maths show and The Explorer Dome at The Cube Website: www.malvernfestivalofideas.org.uk CONTACT AND BOOKING Friday 1st to Sunday 3rd March Events can be booked via the website, Eventbrite, or by phone. Anna Mitchell is a ceramic artist based in Malvern, whose work is inspired by nature and walking. She has a degree in Fine Art and Forest School Training. Her love of clay and all things wild can be traced back to her childhood; days spent digging clay from the stream at the bottom of the garden for her own creations. If this sounds like your child, they would love a ‘Wild Art Party’! Choose from set themes, such as ‘Bees & Bugs’ or ‘Magical Creatures’ or Anna can work with your own theme. A typical party would begin with a scavenger hunt – exploring your garden or venue to collect objects that may then be used in the main nature-inspired art activity. These include wild clay play with seed bombs, map making, magical masks and more. A weekly dose of outdoor creative fun begins again soon - ‘Wild Wednesday’ sessions for children and parents or carers. Contact Anna for details. Anna is also available for booking for schools and community events. To find out more, you can speak to Anna on 07903 902329 or email anna@creativeclay.co.uk www.creativeclay.co.uk Facebook: AnnaMitchellCreativeClay

Theatre News Bill Kenwright Presents

the lady vanishes

Inspired by the Hitchcock classic

Win a pair of tickets to this show at Malvern Theatres.

the lady vanishes Celebrated Emmy award-winning actress Juliet Mills and her award-winning husband Maxwell Caulfield lead the star cast in the latest instalment of the Classic Thriller Theatre Company. The cast also features Lorna Fitzgerald, fresh from her shock departure from the role of Abi Branning in BBC’s EastEnders, Matt Barber, Atticus Aldridge in Downtown Abbey, Robert Duncan (Drop The Dead Donkey), Philip Lowrie (Dennis Tanner in Coronation Street) and Ben Nealon (Soldier Soldier). Socialite Iris is travelling home to England on the train when an accident introduces her to the mild-mannered Miss Froy. After her travelling companion suddenly disappears, Iris is perplexed to find that all the other passengers deny ever having seen her. With the help of urbane musician Max she turns detective and together they become drawn into a complex web of European intrigue as they try to solve the mystery of why the lady vanished. The Lady Vanishes will be appearing on stage at Malvern Theatres from Tuesday 19th to Saturday 23rd March. Tickets are on sale at the Box Office 01684 892277 and online at malvern-theatres.co.uk
