It is Spring! The two bank holidays in May offer the chance to take some time out and enjoy what’s on our doorstep. The start of May sees the return of the annual Well Dressing and Water Festival. Now a firmly established part of the local calendar, as many as 60 water sources will be decorated this year - see Pages 24 and 25 for details. At the end of the month the Food Festival returns, and if food is your thing then don’t missed the revitalised Farmers’ Market, which returns to Abbey Road once a month, starting on Saturday 20th April. Enjoy the read.

Advice
Who pays for long-term social care? By Independent Financial Advisor Rob Weale from Colwall As a society we are living longer and it is becoming much more common to require long term care in older age. Who pays for it is a complex matter and this should be the very first point to establish. Only then can a suitable solution be properly advised and recommended. Many people face this issue for the first time when an older relative needs to go into a home. It can then become extremely urgent to get clear, reliable and unbiased advice and information, in order to take whatever action is in the best interest of your loved one. As a qualified adviser I make a point of insisting a number of key steps are followed to establish whether the individual’s care needs really do have to be funded in part or in full by themselves or their family. Here is a taster of some key questions that need answering: - Understanding the nature and extent of the individual’s care needs and the cost of meeting them - Understanding what care services can be secured free of charge from the local authority or other third party - Establish whether the individual qualifies for free NHS Continuing Health Care funding (NHS CHC) - Establish whether the individual qualifies for an NHS contribution to Registered Nursing Care - Understand the extent to which the local authority will fund any assessed social care needs - Understand the entitlement, if any, to state benefits An appropriately qualified independent financial adviser can arrange a suitable solution to fund long-term care needs; however, I do not believe that same adviser is best placed to establish the answers to the fundamental questions detailed above. Fortunately there are companies out there that do exactly that.
6
We believe best practice is the commissioning of an independent and unbiased company to answer each and every question, thus ensuring you are fully aware of rights and entitlements specific to the individual’s circumstances. This can often be established by way of a telephone consultation, usually free for the first 15 minutes to answer urgent questions, and then if required, a 1 hour telephone consultation or a more in-depth bespoke care report, each offering information to help know and understand the best way forward. There will be an expense, however when compared to the benefits gained, it is money well spent. Once you are in receipt of this information, and it is established there is a need for self- funding, then the journey of finding the right solution to meet this need can continue, whether it be rearranging existing investments, securing a lifelong annuity to pay some or all of the care fees, or a deferred payment plan, to name a few. What is imperative is that you speak to an independent financial adviser who is both qualified and specialises in this very crucial area of advice; they will will seek out other specialists in this field to ensure each and every individual receives their full entitlement to long term care help.
Rob Weale is a founding partner at Smith Weale Associates. If you would like to find out more about funding long term social care contact us. We welcome your enquiry, initial meetings are at our expense and without obligation.

Clusters Emporium Clusters Emporium, based at The Hop Pocket in Bishops Frome, is a place to while away some time discovering all sorts of miniature gems. It’s run by Sue Hubbard, who has chosen a wide range of stock for all kinds of interests and tastes. ‘We have plenty of vintage and collectable items, from porcelain to items of furniture, which we hand pick from sales. Currently we have some beautiful sideboards, dining tables and welsh dressers as well as retro pieces including kitchen chairs.’ The emporium also has a pick and mix button bar, with thousands of buttons to choose from, stored in sweetshop jars. ‘Some people spend hours sifting through them, just to find the perfect button!’ laughs Sue. Items made by local craftspeople are showcased at Clusters, and there’s a range of crystals, incense and other related items. ‘Once people find us, they return again and again’ says Sue. ‘Our emporium is a place to come and have a mooch, spending as much time as you want to browse. We hope to see you soon.’ Clusters Emporium is open from Tuesday to Saturday between 10am and 5.30pm, and from 11am until 5pm on Sunday. It’s located at The Hop Pocket in Bishop’s Frome (WR6 5BT) just off the A4103 between Worcester and Hereford.

Driving Miss Daisy Driving Miss Daisy is a companionship and transport service helping older people to maintain their independence. Whether it’s a visit to a friend, the supermarket or a trip to the doctors, this friendly, caring service is there to help. ‘It’s not just about driving, it’s also about companionship’ says Alastair Cameron, who runs the service in Malvern with his wife, Katherine Eglington. ‘We aren’t carers, but we do take extra care of our customers. We don’t just drop them at the supermarket, we take them around the store helping them get their items and then unpack the groceries when they are home again. If it’s a trip to the doctor, we can accompany them and even report back to a concerned son or daughter. Three of our vehicles are wheelchair adapted so we can carry just about anyone in our cars. This includes pets to vets too.’ As well as Alastair and Katherine, the other drivers are Bev and Beatrice. They are all first-aid trained and DBS-checked. ‘Some people specifically ask for a lady driver which is fine’ continues Alastair ‘and unlike using a taxi company, you’ll know who is coming to collect you.’
The company has an operator’s licence from the local authority and carries out other duties including school runs. They also take people to airports or cruise drop-offs and pick-ups at any time, seven days a week, with four cars now available. ‘Our catch phrase is ‘We are family when family can’t be there” says Alastair. ‘We run a reliable service and our pricing is very competitive - you’ll be surprised at how cost-effective our service can be. For people concerned about a loved one, we look after them like we would our own child or grandmother’

SUMMER CONCERT TRIP A minibus trip to the summer concert of the Worcester Philharmonic Orchestra is being arranged by Community Action Ledbury. The orchestra teamed up with CAL’s transport service after finding out that some of their audience could no longer attend, because they had transport issues or preferred to travel by minibus to reduce their carbon footprint. A trip to Pershore Abbey on Saturday 15th June, for the concert at 2.30pm, is now being arranged. If you are interested then please contact Janet on (01684) 541988.
News MALVERN CONCERT CLUB This May, Malvern Concert Club holds a concert to mark the centenary of the first performances of three works written by the Club’s founder, Sir Edward Elgar. What’s On
Spring festivals There are plenty of ways to enjoy springtime in Malvern! Over the May Day Bank Holiday weekend, the Well Dressing and Water Festival returns. This year’s festival theme is Flight and both groups and individuals have been hard at work for months, preparing elaborate decorations to adorn local water sources. In all, around 60 wells will be dressed, some easy to reach, some more tucked away. There will be minibus tours to view some of the dressed wells, well blessing ceremonies take place and prizes are awarded for the best-dressed wells. Many of the decorations will remain in place until the following weekend. Well dressers get to work on Friday 3rd May, with the festival formally beginning on Saturday 4th May. There’s a a Health and Wellbeing Fair in Rosebank Gardens and a Spring Arts and Food Market in the grounds of Great Malvern Priory, both on Saturday. On Bank Holiday Monday, 6th May, a family day full of fun activities is planned in Priory Park. For full details, visit www.visitthemalverns.org/wellandwaterfest
At the end of May, the Great Malvern Food Festival returns to the town centre. There will be stalls, demonstrations, activities and entertainment in the grounds of Great Malvern Priory. You’ll be able to sample and buy artisan produce and items from more than sixty stallholders, whose produce comes from no further than a 50-mile radius. There will be cookery demonstrations in a cookery theatre, you can get involved with talks and tastings from local producers, and enjoy live music. Now in its ninth year, this popular annual event attracts thousands of visitors, both local and from further afield. The Great Malvern Food Festival takes place on Bank Holiday Monday 27th May, from 10am until 5.30pm. Admission is free. farmers' markets Great Malvern Farmers’ Markets returns in April with a new fresh look. The first market takes place on Easter Saturday, 20th April.
It’s being run by local company Boffy Arts Markets which already organises regular Arts and Food markets in the Priory Grounds – they also play a major part in Malvern’s food and drink festival as well as the Christmas Lights switch on. ‘We want to bring a sense of occasion and fun to the farmers’ market’ says Steve Boffy. ‘We’ll be using brightly coloured stalls, using designs from an artist we work with, as well as banners which will decorate the area on Abbey Road. On some weekends there might be live music and we’re talking about having a community stall, run by different local groups.’
the senses, not only the visual but also for taste and smell. It must become a go-to destination, a place to meet friends, come and have lunch or be inspired to buy something to take away and cook at home.’ ‘As a local company’ continues Steve, ‘we already work with many artisan food producers, helping to promote what they do. The market should bring more people into the centre of Great Malvern, helping to make it a vibrant and thriving town centre. Do please come along to the first market on Easter Saturday as well as in future months. We’re planning on developing the offer over time and would like to hear your ideas about what you’d like to see.’

Cube Youth From skateboarding to mural painting, Malvern Cube has lots going on for young people this spring. There’s a new project called Thrive, described as a safe, supportive space for young women aged between 11 and 18 years old, where they can make friends, have fun and learn how to be good to themselves. ‘We meet every second Tuesday from 5pm to 7pm, but we’re happy to change the day and the time if it suits those coming along’ says Kelda White, who co-ordinates youth activities at The Cube. ‘We run sessions based on whatever the young women coming along want to do. This could be anything from advice on healthy eating, exam stress, self-confidence or forming healthy relationships. We’re also setting up a peer-mentoring group so the young women can support each other.’ The sessions are free and very informal so anyone interested can just come along and see if they like it. As well as Thrive, there are several other regular sessions for young people taking place at Malvern Cube every week. Each Monday

between 5pm and 7pm there’s a skate jam and DJ workshop, with ramps set up outside and music inside. ‘The people coming tell me its ‘sick’ and ‘phat’ which I take as a compliment!’ says Kelda. On Thursday (4.30pm to 6.30pm) the Youth Café is a chance to enjoy a snack and chill out with gaming, crafts and chat. Once a month the Youth Forum is held, where young people can have their say about the things that matter to them. ‘The young people do take up issues with the powers that be and can achieve results, its been amazing’ says Kelda. ‘We’ve also completed a mural on the back wall of the building, showing what might happen if we don’t address climate change.’ SKY Autism Support also meets at The Cube, and there are plans to set up a group for young mums (up to 21 years old) which will take place on Tuesdays. You can read more on facebook by searching for @malvernyouth or on Instagram @malvernyouthy. Theatre
priory mystery play A modern Mystery Play comes to Great Malvern Priory this April. With a cast of almost 50 local people, the play challenges the traditional view on the world, with Lucifer cast as a woman and Adam and Eve reversing roles. The play is being directed by Rob Swinton. ‘This is a contemporary story dealing with gender issues and political scenarios’ he says. ‘It is based on a historical tradition but it looks at life as we live it now. It is not a comfortable, cosy story. It is red and raw and reflects scenarios that are as current today as they were centuries ago. We only have to look at what is happening in America, North Korea, Syria to know this.’ Rob is using two professional actors for the parts of God and Lucifer but local students and residents will fill a further 46 roles. The production takes place inside The Priory which will be dramatically transformed for the performances. It is anticipated that over a two-week period it will attract a large audience. ‘I will be combining texts from the 15th and 16th centuries and the Townley Cycle, which is a script
that is quite political’ says Rob. ‘The cast will be in modern dress because I wanted to make the point that two thousand years later we still have evil characters like Herod.’ Rob Swinton came for a walk on the hills 33 years ago and made Malvern his home. He is a prize-winning professional actor and director, a member of the Royal National Theatre and has been artistic director of the Stafford Shakespeare Festival. He produced a Mystery Play in The Priory in the year 2000 and also produced a Son et Lumière in 2010. Following recruitment of cast and backstage staff, rehearsals begin at the start of April. Performances of the mystery play will take place between Wednesday 24th April and Wednesday 8th May. For further details and tickets can be obtained from the Priory Shop, the Priory Parish Office, the Tourist Information Centre and online from

malvern cricket club The junior section at Malvern Cricket Club is preparing for another busy season. Last year there were 80 junior members, which is expected to grow even further as the training starts this April. ‘We only started with junior cricket six years ago’ says Anthony Arnold, who organises it each season. ‘At first we only had the very youngest age group and now we have seven junior teams, all the way from the Under 8s to the under 15s.’ This year, the club will field two girls’ teams in the under 11 and under 13 age groups. Through March and April there has been indoor training in the nets at Malvern College, with the training moving outdoors as soon as the weather improves. ‘Junior players learn many things, not least team building’ continues Anthony. ‘It’s about winning and losing gracefully, it’s learning about themselves both as an individual and a team member. There’s an awful lot within the technical aspects of the game, including hand-eye coordination, balance and core skills.’
H M S
HEATING MAINTENANCE SERVICES LTD
www.malverncc.co.uk The club is busy fundraising for a number of different projects. They plan to add an additional two practise nets to their training facilities. There are plans to improve the playing surface, as well as extending the outdoor area around the pavilion. ‘The more successful we become and the more games we host, the need increases to improve our facilities’ says Tony. ‘There’s a few of us within the club working really hard to achieve this and we are always keen for more volunteers. Any extra help is very welcome.’ It’s not only junior cricket - there’s a new third eleven side starting this season. ‘The children we began with six years ago will begin to filter into the adult teams’ says Tony. ‘They are the lifeblood of the club and will contribute to its success in the years to come.’ Junior training takes place on Friday evenings from 6.30pm to 8pm – the date of the first session in April will be confirmed once the weather improves. To check the date and for more details, visit the club website or search for them on facebook.

Group
40 years of malvern quilters Malvern Quilters is 40 years old! This friendly group started life in 1979 as a class run by Brenda Cox, who had learned the craft from a friend in the United States of America. The early group had around 30 members and exhibited its work for the first time at Malvern Winter Gardens in the early 1980s. Since then there have been many hundreds more members. Today, the group welcomes all abilities, from absolute beginners to those with more experience. There are two meetings every month with a varied programme of speakers and demonstrations. Recent and future topics are as diverse as a Procion Dye workshop and creating quilts on a geological theme – the group also holds a summer party in July. Before all of that, the fortieth anniversary is being marked with a Ruby Anniversary Exhibition over the weekend of 6th and 7th April between 10am and 4pm. Taking place at Colwall Village Hall (Mill Lane, £3 entry), it’s a chance to see some of the group’s work such as The Ruby
Quilt, made to mark the anniversary year. Inspired by the work of Charles Rennie Mackintosh, it was first exhibited last year at the Festival of Quilts, held at the NEC in Birmingham. Not only beautiful to look at, the quilt serves another purpose. A raffle to win the quilt is being staged, with the proceeds donated to Young Minds, a charity offering support and advice for young people affected by mental health issues. If you can’t make it along to the exhibition, photographs of Malvern Quilters’ work will be on display along Church Walk between Waitrose and Church Street. This takes place in the fortnight leading up to the exhibition weekend. If you’re interested in joining the group, you’ll find more details at the exhibition, or you can visit the Quilters’ website, www.malvernquilters.co.uk

David V Jones & Associates Spinal and Musculo-skeletal Therapy In Malvern
Registered Osteopaths with over 50 years experience between us
Non specific low back pain About 80 % of adults will suffer low back pain at some point during their lifetimes. In acute cases over 90% are classed as non specific low back pain. What is it? When no definite problem or disease can be identified using a full range of medical tests, then the pain in the low back is categorized as “non specific”. This doesn’t mean that the pain is imagined or doesn’t really exist. It just means that no current medical investigation can ascertain the exact cause. What really causes it? In reality there are many specific causes for “non specific” back pain. Spasmed, tightened or torn muscles will create pain, as will overstretched ligaments. A minutely bulging disc that doesn’t show on MRI scan may nonetheless cause pain through nerve irritation. The facet joints which control the movements of the spine can also malfunction and cause pain as they too have a significant nerve supply. Pain can be referred to the back from other structures and even the nerves themselves can become injured and create neuropathic pain. What can be done? As osteopaths we see an enormous number of cases
of non specific low back pain. Although all osteopaths are trained to perform a range of medical tests we also perform our own sort of examination of the spine and surrounding tissues. This involves detailed assessment of the movements of the spine as well as postural considerations. We then focus on palpation of the tissues. This means using a skilled sense of touch which can frequently point us towards the structure that is causing symptoms. This is where we differ from some other forms of treatment and why osteopaths are popular. A recent study found that amongst osteopathic patients, 96% had confidence in osteopathic treatment and advice. Treatment Osteopathic treatment is very much hands on. Very specific soft tissue work, as well as different forms of spinal manipulation, is used to coax joints back into action and free off overly tight muscles. This type of approach has been tried and tested over the ages and is often the first type of treatment used by top sports people. We often combine the traditional treatments with high tech equipment and mix in other modalities such as medical acupuncture in order to achieve the best results possible.
Orchard Lodge Clinic is privately run by David Jones, GOsC Registered Osteopath and associates. All treatments are drug-free and use techniques recommended by the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence. Initial consultation (with treatment) costs £50. Follow-up sessions £42.

Theatre News Oscar Wilde’s
The Picture of Dorian Gray
Tilted Wig Productions are proud to present an exciting and bold new production of Oscar Wilde’s The Picture of Dorian Gray starring Jonathan Wrather, known for his roles on both stage and screen, as Lord Henry Wotton. The play, based on the classic novel, celebrates Wilde’s wonderful language and will appeal to audiences old and new. The Picture of Dorian Gray tells the story of a cultured, wealthy, and beautiful young man’s downfall through moral corruption and seduction. Dorian, who, fearing that his good looks would fade as he grows old, wishes that a portrait painted of him could bear the burden of the ageing process, leaving him forever young. But at what cost...? Featuring Wilde’s famous wit and a stellar cast, The Picture of Dorian Gray is a fast-paced thriller that will keep you on the edge of your seat right up until the final scenes of the play – providing an entertaining night out for all. The Picture of Dorian Gray will be appearing on stage at Malvern Theatres from Tuesday 7th to Saturday 11th May. Tickets are on sale at the Box Office 01684 892277 and online at malvern-theatres.co.uk
