Welcome to the November edition of All About ‘West of the Hills’.
November 2010 Published and edited by: Sascha McDonald All About Local Magazines Ltd sascha@allabout-local.com 07906 573352 Photo front page: Lime Kiln in Park Wood, West Malvern Graphic Design & Layout: All About Magazines Editorial: Sascha - 07906 573352 Advertising: Tina Palmer - 07952 591031 Distribution: All About West of the Hills is distributed to 2,800 homes and businesses Booking Deadline: For December - 11 November
November is a month of reflection. On Remembrance Sunday, 14th November, there will be services in our local churches and in front of war memorials, to remember the many who have died in war. The Poppy Appeal is already well underway, and in our part of the world all sorts of people have been helping out. The Royal British Legion has written to me, praising the children at Cradley Primary School who have raised money through the sale of Poppy wristbands. It’s good to know today’s younger generation still care about those who have gone before and paid the ultimate price for our freedom today. Turn to page 35 to read more. Have a good November Sascha

From Captain to There can’t be many men around this part of the world like John Rowe. After spending four decades of his life crossing the world’s oceans, he’s spending his retirement in landlocked Cradley. A chat about his work with a local charity enterprise led to him telling us the story of his career as a Sea Captain, visiting the world’s great ports and even battling pirates! John grew up in Torquay, with a father who worked for the Royal Navy. He became a merchant navy cadet himself in 1954, training at the School of Navigation at Warsash near Southampton for a year. ‘It was tough’ says John, ‘we had to learn to sail and navigate a sail training ship, the Moyana’. After his time at pre-sea training John joined the Blue Star Line. Joining his first ship in 1955, he began working his way up the ranks. ‘Each rank had specific duties. You started as a deck cadet progressing to Fourth
particular hurricane off the New Zealand coast. Another time we were off the Azores with a massive swell, when our engine broke down. We got it going again, but in the interim the rolling of the ship did some damage’. One Christmas John was captaining a ship off the port of Santos in Brazil when his ship was boarded by pirates. After a confrontation the Chief Officer was shot. ‘Fortunately’ says John ‘one of the passengers was a retired forces doctor who helped treat him until
Officer, then you became Third Mate with secretarial and health and safety duties. After a few years I became Second Mate, responsible for navigation, checking equipment was up to date and sound, and relaying warnings and problems to the Captain. The First Mate was responsible for loading the ship and deciding what went where. This was an important role, not only did even distribution of weight keep the ship safe at sea, you also had to make sure cargoes could be unloaded in the correct order, otherwise you could waste days of time in port sorting out the mess’. Finally John found himself promoted to the role of Captain on a voyage from Cape Town to the Persian Gulf, carrying a cargo of bananas. ‘The Captain fell ill and was admitted to hospital, leaving me in charge’. The job came with serious responsibilities, looking after a large vessel at sea, its cargo and of course its passengers. ‘When crossing the Pacific, there’s a point at which you find yourself seven days from the nearest land, and it did concern me that if anything happened to a passenger we would have to deal with it ourselves’. Memories of ferocious storms have also remained engraved on John’s memory. ‘I remember one
we could get him to hospital’. Was it a glamorous life at sea? ‘Like anything else, it had its good days and its bad days’ John tells me. ‘Certainly it was a very interesting job, something to get your teeth into and enjoy. I suppose the main drawback was being away from home, especially once I got married, but we learned to live with it’. Letters could be posted home and were sorted by agencies in port. John remembers calling home after his second daughter was born and hearing operator after operator relaying the call forwards from South Africa to Britain. Later on it became possible to call home from ships or send faxes, but prohibitive costs meant this only happened for special occasions. John briefly courted fame when he became the first Captain of a British Ship to enter Buenos Aires a few years after the Falklands Conflict. ‘It was a quiet, discreet event as it turned out’ says John. ‘We held a small cocktail party on board for a few key government officials and diplomatic staff. The Argentinians were most welcoming, but don’t forget our company had been sailing there since the previous century and so they knew us well. Our arrival was reported in all their newspapers’. The good moments for John were seeing old friends in port, especially in Australia and New Zealand.
Christmas Cards ‘Melbourne was a city I’d been visiting since 1955, and I went there for the last time on my retirement voyage four decades later’. Other good memories are arriving in some of the world’s great ports; sailing under the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, seeing the sun rise in Cape Town and arriving in Rio, with the giant statue Christ the Redeemer standing above the city. From the mid-1980s things began to change. ‘The ships were getting much bigger at a time when crew numbers were getting smaller.’ Says John. After retirement to landlocked Cradley in 1995 John quickly discovered a new passion; Christmas cards. Today John is busy as chairman of the Midland Charities Association which runs a Christmas Card shop, raising money for charities every year in Malvern. ‘I first went to help in 1995 when the shop was run by Wendy Townsend. Like me, her husband
had been at sea and was running it to raise funds for the Missions to Seaman. ‘ John manages the shop alongside Sue Sellwood from Save the Children, and together with a dedicated group of volunteers they raise thousands of pounds that goes straight to charity. ‘When the group comes together in the autumn’ says John, ‘they might not have seen each other for months but they pick up where they’ve left off and it’s very sociable. Since 1996 we’ve raised a total of £313,207 and a few pence! It makes me feel good, it really does.’ Its obvious that John enjoyed his time at sea, but these days life in our landlocked part of the world suits him better. ‘I have met some wonderful people during my time with the Association. When we send the cheque out to the charity in March they’re very grateful and appreciative. They always write lovely letters back’.
If you’d like to visit the Christmas Card Shop, you’ll find it at the premises of Arcos on Church Street. Its open Monday to Friday between 10am and 4pm, and on Saturday from 10am until 1pm. Its last day of opening this year is Friday 17th December.

Beat the Winter Blues Is your mood like the weather ...dark and gloomy? If you have lost that zest for life then you may be suffering from SAD! When the sun is shining most of us feel happier and more energetic. Conversely, when it’s dark and gloomy, many people feel more lethargic and less sociable. If you find yourself in the latter category you may be suffering from Seasonal Affective Disorder, also known as SAD. For most of us, the end of summer signals the start of cosy evenings tucked up indoors and the excitement and sparkle of Christmas. For those suffering with SAD, it is the start of half a year of dull, grey days and endless nights. It has only gained credence within medical profession relatively recently. Since then various products from pills to light boxes have flooded the market. SAD is a type of depression and is also known as the ‘winter blues’. It is a cyclical disorder, which means that it will appear and then go away at approximately the same time each year. It starts in September and ends in April when the mornings get lighter. No one really knows what causes it but one theory states the chemical composition of the body is changed because of the shorter days. Levels of melatonin, which regulates sleep and mood are disrupted, there are also falls in the levels of a chemical called serotonin. The exact mechanism of how these changes occur is still unknown.
14
So you may be wondering what exactly SAD feels like. The symptoms can be mild, ranging from a change in appetite, sleep problems, irritability or joint pain to extreme tiredness, depression and even despair. On a personal note, in recent years I have a noticed a change in my general well being as September approaches. I tend to lose my vivaciousness, eat more and find myself constantly moaning about the dark evenings and long awaited spring! Could I be suffering from SAD? On a positive note I am going to have a trial with a light box and see if that changes how I feel, if it does then I have the answer. The light box is designed to simulate the brightness of a spring morning. The theory behind it is to stimulate the pineal gland in the brain which suppresses the production of melatonin, a chemical which makes us feel sleepy and ready for bed as night falls. Bright light at daybreak is designed to stop this process, in order for us to wake up. However, when the light is low in autumn and winter, the brain does not receive enough light to stop the melatonin, this increases feelings of lethargy and the symptoms above. Light boxes have been shown to be effective in up to 85 per cent of diagnosed cases. Light treatment is used daily in winter and even during dull periods in summer. It consists of sitting two to three feet away from a specially designed light box, usually on a table, allowing the light to shine directly into the eyes. The user can carry out normal activity such as reading or eating while sitting in front of the box. Treatment is usually effective within three or four days and the effect continues provided it is used every day. Light boxes are not available on the NHS but are available from specialist retailers. If you’d like to find out more about Seasonal Affective Disorder, a charity called The SAD Association (SADA) can help you. Their website is www.sada.org.uk

All About... ...the Hockey Club Colwall and Malvern Hockey Club started two years ago when Colwall Hockey Club and Malvern Hockey Club merged. Coral Handley is the club Chair, and through the years has had many roles including 1st Team Captain.
Who plays for the club?
All sorts of people, we have players from eight years upwards and our oldest player is in her seventies. In all we have over thirty members and two teams. We train on Wednesday evenings at Malvern St James during the season, when the league players are joined by the juniors and players who just want to train to improve their fitness. The best thing about hockey is that it’s sociable, caters for players of all standards, gets you out in the fresh air, and means you can play as part of a team.
And what is so good about your club?
The best thing about our club is that there’s a friendly atmosphere, and we never turn anybody away for not being good enough! We believe the most important thing is for people to be able to play a game of hockey, and to improve if they want to, regardless of their age and standard. Our club’s main aim is to provide recreational hockey in a friendly atmosphere, rather than to be ultracompetitive. Some of our current players have played representative hockey and also played for Colwall when it was in the National League. Today we play in the West Clubs League, the 1st team playing in Severn
Division 1, the 2nd team playing in Severn Division 3. We’re hoping that both teams will end up in the top half of their respective tables this season.
I
s it just about sport or is there a social side to the club as well? It’s not just about sport - there’s definitely a social side to the club as well! After every home match, we entertain the opposition at the Brewers Arms in West Malvern, who kindly provide chip butties for everybody. We also have Christmas and end of season get togethers every year. We run an annual charity fundraising tournament just after Christmas - the Trevor Marston Memorial Tournament, in memory of the former landlord of the Brewers Arms. This season, it’ll be played on the 8th January 2011, and money raised will go to Macmillan Cancer Support.
Where do you play?
The club plays on the artificial pitches at the Malvern St James Sports & Fitness Centre. There’s regular information updates on the Colwall and Malvern Hockey group on Facebook and you can find more information about the club on our web site www.colwallandmalvernhc.webs.com
If anybody would like more details they can also contact me (Coral) on 07773 491203. Alternatively you can just turn up on a Wednesday evening!

Down at Cave’s Folly, Bridget’s busy with her compost... At this time of year I am thinking of tidying up the garden and putting plants to bed for the winter. But by far the most important job I have is tending my compost! The compost heap is the manifestation of the principle of organics, recycling waste and returning it to the soil to enrich further plant growth which in turn will complete the cycle and make further compost. Most gardens have space for a compost heap of some fashion in a hidden away corner of the garden. I make mine in three sided bays made of chicken wire supported by a post in each corner. The materials used to make your bin are not that important, but whatever you use it is better to have clear soil for the base. This enables the worms and bacteria in the ground to easily start work on the heap. The worms that are essential for converting your assorted waste into rich compost are not ordinary earth worms but distinctive, crimson worms called Brandlings. It is amazing how they seem to materialise from nowhere. If you want to help numbers along you can buy bags of worms from www.wigglywigglers.co.uk - you can never have too many!
There is no mystery to making compost but it is essential to have a mix of materials. It is important to establish a high ratio of carbon to nitrogen. In simplistic terms this means that to stop all the fine plant material such as grass clippings ending up as a smelly sludge you have to mix it with coarser materials like dried flower stems, straw, cardboard or manure. With the busy lives we lead it is unlikely that we will have time, but turning the compost heap every month or so helps increase aerobic activity which heats it up more quickly and increases the rate of decomposition. Most compost heaps will take between six months and a year to rot down. I always have two heaps on the go and empty & spread one onto the borders during the winter months. The same principles apply to plastic compost bins, you should empty them sooner otherwise you will need so many bins that the garden will become a sea of green plastic bins! Finally, don’t be too tidy in the garden, it is good to leave plants with seed heads for the birds to finish off and leafy ground cover for hibernating creatures such as toads and hedgehogs. Bridget

We have a large range of fruit, vegetables and plants in season, free range eggs, local honey – including honey comb packs – freshly made cakes, biscuits and savouries, attractive hand made jewellery, knitted garments, embroidered items and hand made toys and pictures.
