Another busy year is almost behind us! Putting together this magazine is big job – talking to advertisers, gathering together articles and information, piecing the whole thing together before boxes of the finished magazines arrive for our delivery team to take from door to door. It’s a bit like a very complicated jigsaw puzzle! Altogether, it’s a lot of work for a lot of people, but we genuinely love what we do. As a small, independent, local company serving our community, we are proud of our magazine!

Advice
make 2018 the year you spread the risk By Independent Financial Advisor Rob Weale from Colwall hat a year 2017 has been, political and civil unrest around the globe, previously strong currencies plummeting on the world stage, inflation climbing at an alarming rate, interest rates starting to rise…yet markets here in the UK and the US have climbed to all-time highs….is 2018 the year the bubble bursts?
w
Hopefully not. The climate is still right for investing, frankly it always is. So long as the time horizon is sufficient, at least 5+ years, and diversification is employed as a matter of course, any storms that break out can be weathered and no knee-jerk reactions need be taken. Buy high, sell low, is never a good plan. Asset Choice The single best way to protect your portfolio is to spread your risk across several different types of investment. There are many different assets in which you can invest, each with different risk characteristics. While the risks attributable to assets cannot be avoided, when managed collectively as part of a diversified portfolio, they can be diluted. Company specific risk Next, one of the best things you can do is to diversify within the assets. For example, you can spread your investments into different shares or bonds to ensure your portfolio is exposed to lots of different types of investments. Sector exposure It is just as important to spread your investments across different sectors. A sector is a grouping of funds with a similar investment objective and make up. By diversifying across sectors you can access shares with high growth and/or income expectations, without over-exposing your portfolio as a whole. Geographical Location It’s natural to feel more comfortable investing in your home market, but this is not necessarily the most sensible option. Because investments in different geographical economies generally operate in different economic cycles, they have less than perfect correlation.
6
Investment funds Keeping track of lots of individual assets can be a daunting task. A much simpler solution is to buy investment funds containing those assets and leave the diversification worries to professional management. Risk profiling Many financial advisers are still guilty, in a somewhat broad-brushed manner, of categorising their clients using three basic levels: ‘cautious’, ‘balanced’ or ‘aggressive’. However there are now many sophisticated risk profile questionnaires and online tools available to financial advisers to help measure your appetite for risk more precisely, and even your tolerance for loss. The more accurate your risk profile, the greater the chance of recommending the most suitable investments for your needs. Summary At Smith Weale Associates we are great believers in diversification at very stage of the investment process. If you have not explored true diversification before might I suggest you do it now and ensure you are prepared for whatever the future holds.
This information sets out the basics of risk and return when investing. It is not designed to be investment advice and should not be interpreted as such. Other factors will need to be taken into account before making an investment decision – Smith Weale Associates can help you with this.

The tradition of holding a carol concert in the Priory to raise money for charity was started in the late 1970s by Neil Page who was the choir’s Musical Director. Cloudy2Clear Announce Trusted Trader Partnership Consumer champions Which? have now joined the thousands of customers who recognise that Cloudy2Clear Windows really are a business that you can TRUST. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has received the coveted ‘Which Trusted Trader’ status after going through a rigorous accreditation process entirely focussed on customer service. Group Managing Director Marcus McGee believes that Which? have endorsed Cloudy2Clear’s long standing company policy
of delivering the highest standards possible at all times. ‘Our service is simple. If your double glazing has misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 25 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps. Whilst a number of tradespeople perhaps don’t focus on customer care as much as they should do, we make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. Locally Cloudy2Clear service the Malvern, Malvern Wells, Welland
& Madresfield areas and manager Paul Papandreou agrees that this approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated as both my customers and, obviously a body as nationally important as Which? now recognise.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Paul a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

All About...
malvern joggers From its origins as a small group of runners, Malvern Joggers now has more than 200 members. They meet every week for evening runs and organise their own local events, as well as offering Couch to 5k courses for people wanting to start running. This friendly group caters for all abilities of runners and Paul Newman who is one of their members tells us more.
When did you start running? I started running as I was getting close to my 40th birthday and fearing it was all downhill from there! Like a lot of others, I joined a gym and got introduced to running. I started running with the Malvern Joggers founder Chris Barker on a Tuesday and Thursday - when he started up Malvern Joggers, I began running with them on a Wednesday night. I haven’t looked back, it’s the best decision I ever made. Never in my wildest dreams did I think I’d end up running Marathon events.
How many members are there ? We have just passed 200 full affiliated members, but you don’t have to be a member to run with us so we do get a lot of casual members. There are however lots of benefits to joining, including discounts for race entry, discounted gym membership and the chance to be in our own ballot for three London Marathon places every year.
When do you meet and what do you do? Our main get together is on a Wednesday night. In the winter months when its dark, we stick to the pavements and meet at Malvern St James Gym on Barnards Green Road. In the summer months we move to the countryside and run on the hills or commons around Malvern. We also have informal get togethers of runners on other nights of the week.
What are some of the highlights of the year for the Joggers? There are lots of highlights because we always have a large contingent doing lots of events at home and abroad. A big support crew normally travels to London to cheer on our runners at the marathon. We have our own 10k event held
20
on Castlemorton common, we have an annual Pubathon where we collect for local charities - the list goes on.
If people want to take up running but are nervous, do you have any advice? Not to worry! Twice a year we host a Couch to 5k training plan and from our January intake a number who started from a low fitness base are now running 10k races. A few have moved onto half marathons and a few are even considering full marathons in the future. We cater for all abilities and we always muster back for people so that nobody is ever left behind. We have lots of different paced groups starting from ‘walk-run’ up to our fast group. In that way, it’s easy to progress between the different paced groups. As well as helping adults, we also have a healthy junior joggers section that meets on a Sunday morning, for further details see our website. If you’re interested in joining or finding out more, you can email joinus@malvernjoggers.co.uk, search for Malvern Joggers on Facebook or visit www.malvernjoggers.co.uk

Volunteering
help local families The local charity Home-Start South Worcestershire is asking parents to volunteer and share their life skills and experience with families who are finding life tough. Established in this area for over 35 years, Home-Start offers weekly home visits from an experienced parent befriending volunteer, to help lighten the load for stressed mums and dads. ‘Someone to lend a hand, someone to listen, someone to share some of the daily ups and downs of parenting just for a couple of hours once a week, can make a vital difference to parents who are finding life tough through illness, disability, financial or housing pressures, loneliness or relationship breakdown’ says Jess Bird, the local charity organiser who is based in Malvern.
The office is open from 10am to 3pm and then 5.30pm to 7.30pm. Home-Start staff will be available to answer your questions, so drop in any time convenient to you for a cup of tea and a short informal chat.
‘Volunteers play with children, help families go to the park, shop, get through life admin, and sometimes just have fun. We work hard to match each family with a suitable volunteer local to them, and provide training, support and travel expenses for all our befriending volunteers.’ ‘Our volunteers tell us they find the role rewarding and interesting, so call us today and find out how you can join in. You may have skills to share such as budgeting, cooking and meal planning, or writing a CV, or you may simply remember how challenging early parenthood can be, and want to help. Please use your parenting experience to help someone else rediscover the joy in family life.’ There are regular New Volunteer meetings in Worcester and Malvern, where you can find out more. You are very welcome to come along to meet the team and take the next step towards helping a local family. The next date is on Thursday 30th November in Malvern at the Home-Start office at 52 Prospect Close.
24
If you are interested in finding out more, please call (01905) 29377 or email enquiries@home-startsw.org.uk. All Home-Start volunteers are helped to undertake DBS checks and provide references - travel expenses are paid for the weekly family visit. You can read more on the local Home-Start website which is www.home-startsw.org.uk, the national site is www.home-start.org.uk

people-powered booster rocket out of potential despair. The mission of Zest4Life is to provide a friendship group, fuelled by conversation, games and laughter, alleviating loneliness, supporting bereavement and improving cognitive reserves to help people live longer.’ “The price sensitive £3 banquet-style menu is described as legendary and is complemented by free surplus food to take home. On 20th December the two course meal and Christmasthemed gathering means that we will need to price at £5; we would also appreciate knowing beforehand if you are attending.“ You can find out more by calling 07505 053175 or write to 89 Poolbrook Road, Malvern, WR14 3JW

malvern blindfold mile Imagine for a moment you have to navigate your way around Malvern blindfolded. Would you still recognise the town? How would you deal with things like crossing the road?
n
ext April, the local charity Sight Concern is holding Walk the Blindfold Mile Malvern. The event aims to involve at least 100 people walking in pairs around Malvern. One of the pair is blindfolded while the other is sighted. Along the way there will be a number of sensory challenges to complete. Starting and finishing at Malvern Cube, the route will include the Library, the Priory, Malvern Theatres and Priory Park. Participants experience some of the challenges that blind and partially sighted people overcome each day. The event will help to raise money for Sight Concern, which ran a similar event in Worcester last year. That was described as a very powerful, memorable and attention-grabbing experience by many of the people who took part. Friends, family, work colleagues and schools are all invited to take part on Saturday 21st April 2018 (children will need to be supervised). There is an entry fee and each participant is encouraged to raise sponsorship. You can get more details from the Sight Concern website, www.sightconcern.co.uk/blindfoldmile or by calling (01905) 332902

HomeInstead is very different to other care agencies you may have heard of. Currently we are Worcestershire’s only CQC ‘Outstanding’ rated home care agency and hold the Queen’s Award for Enterprise for Innovation in Care, as well as being rated the UK’s No 1 Quality Care Agency by Industry watchdog LaingBuisson. We don’t do the short calls others do, and there is always time for our carers to give companionship to their clients as part of the call. Our Caregivers go back to the same clients time and again, getting to know them as friends. We don’t ask our Caregivers to wear uniform because when they take clients out and about it is much nicer to be seen with someone who could be a friend or relative. We have excellent initial training programmes, and will add to your skills with courses such as our City and Guilds in Alzheimer’s and Dementia, and QCF (NVQ) Level 2 & 3 in Social Care if you choose. We offer industry leading rates of pay, starting at well over £10 per hour, including guaranteed holiday pay and we offer hours to suit your lifestyle. Some of our Caregivers have just one or two clients in their own local area, while others work on a full-time basis. Because we like you to be able to take clients out and about you do need access to a car.

Trigger Point Pain in the Muscles As an osteopath many of one’s patients present with muscle pain of some sort. There are certainly many different types of muscle pain ranging from post exercise soreness through to spasm, muscle strain and viral myalga. It can even be seen as a side effect of medications such as statins. Some muscle pain defies explanation but is often attributed to trigger points which may be “active” or “latent” depending on whether they are causing pain or not.
lead to continual activation of certain parts of a muscle. The overworked area contracts and this limits the blood flow leading to lower oxygen levels and an accumulation of calcium ions. In turn the acidity within the contracted muscle increases and this leads to pain and further contraction such that a vicious cycle is established leading to ongoing problems.
What are the associations?
A number of common musculoskeletal problems are often associated with trigger points. These include: headache, jaw problems, neck pain, tennis elbow, shoulder pain and pelvic pain. Treatment of the trigger points may lead to an improvement in the associated problem.
What are trigger points?
There are specific diagnostic criteria for trigger point pain. The current definition is that a trigger point is the presence of a hyperirritable nodule within a taut band of skeletal muscle. The nodule will be tender to pressure and any pressure on it will produce pain in other areas (referred pain). Patients being treated often describe “knots” in their muscles.
What causes them?
There are several theories as to how trigger points develop. Overload and overuse are two key factors that
How are they treated?
Trigger points are usually treated with manual pressure such as deep specific massage and dry needling / acupuncture. Medically, local anaesthetic and corticosteroid injections are also used in some circumstances.
Orchard Lodge Clinic is privately run by David Jones, GOsC Registered Osteopath and associates. All treatments are drug-free and use techniques recommended by the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence. Initial consultation (with treatment) costs £45. Follow-up sessions £40.

HAIR BY RACHEL Hair extensions offer the chance for a completely new hairstyle, according to stylist Rachael Asquith. Based at The Malvern Hair and Beauty Emporium, Rachael professionally adds extensions to clients hair before giving them a new style. ‘Extensions have a standard length of between 16 and 20 inches, which can then be cut and styled’ she says. ‘I use a system of fixing which allows the extensions to be adjusted or removed easily. Usually they will need tightening every six weeks and some clients keep them in for up to a year.’ With ten years of experience, Rachael offers a broad range of styling, to suit the individual. ‘Some clients come in weekly for a blow dry, others will have a cut and blow dry every 6 to 8 weeks.’ You can book an appointment with Rachael on Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays at Malvern Hair and Beauty Emporium on Court Road in Barnards Green. If you prefer, she can see you on a weekday evening, if booked in advance.

Business News BRIGHT & BEAUTIFUL
WLS SOLICITORS Business is steadily growing for WLS Solicitors. Since moving into new offices in Malvern Link earlier in the year, they’ve taken on a number of new staff. ‘We’ve just appointed a conveyancer to deal with residential work’ says Chris Morgan from the company, ‘so if you’re planning to move home then do pop in for a chat with her.’ Based in the heart of Malvern Link, their location makes them easily accessible. ‘We offer a range of services to look after the needs of individuals’ says Chris, ‘including the writing of wills, estate planning, probate and probate litigation. In fact, whatever your individual legal needs might be, we are confident we can help you.’ If you have a legal query or issue, you can call them or pop in to meet a member of staff. ‘This initial consultation is completely free’ continues Chris, ‘and nobody is charged anything until deciding whether to proceed further. It will cost nothing for an early stage meeting to map out possibilities and a route forward before deciding whether to engage our services.’ The company also advises on the setting up of trusts, a potentially complex area in which they have extensive experience. ‘We also provide advice and assistance for setting up Lasting Powers of Attorney’ says Chris, ‘which will allow loved ones or a trusted professional to make decisions about your financial affairs or healthcare, if you become unable to do so.’
Stuart Callister and his Bright & Beautiful team keep the homes of Malvern and Worcester clean and sparkling. His client numbers continue to grow as our work and home lives get ever busier. Stuart says: “We still tend to think we can and should be doing it all. More people than you think now have a cleaner, not because they have huge houses but because they want to make the most of their weekends and would rather not spend it cleaning. By choosing a managed service like ours you are also providing fair employment to a local person. All our housekeepers are fully trained and enjoy full employment rights, holidays and sick pay and they’re also fully DBS checked and insured for your security.” Find out more about how Bright & Beautiful can help you by contacting Stuart Callister stuart@brightandbeautifulhome.com Malvern – 01684 217 625
You will find WLS Solicitors opposite the United Reformed Church in Malvern Link. You are very welcome to pop in for a chat during office hours or call them on (01684) 216777.

Well Being
what are you paying attention to? Perhaps half your attention is on what you are doing right now, and the rest is worrying about something that may or may not happen in the future, or something that happened in the past that doesn’t sit well with you. If I pause for a moment and notice what my mind is doing, I can see that as well as anticipating the next sentence in this article, I’m also wondering how it will be received, and comparing it to a good piece of writing that I read earlier. It’s good to pause and pay attention to the things that we don’t usually notice. There’s some tension in my lower back. The act of noticing leads into a shift in posture without thinking about it. I can still feel the warmth of my cup of tea on the inside of my cheek. Noticing that warmth tunes me into temperature and I realise that my legs are a little chilly. Keeping my attention on my body, I become aware of some aches in my hand. Is that the result of too much typing (for which I use just a couple of fingers)? I catch the speculative thought. That’s the kind of place my mind usually goes to: thinking, thinking, thinking. Glancing through the window next to me I notice grey clouds moving across a white sky. I keep my focus there for a while. It takes about a minute for the clouds to pass from one side of the window to the other. They shift and change shape as they move, their wispy edges curling out and then back in on themselves. As I keep my attention there my mind settles and becomes quiet. This is the benefit of noticing the things we don’t usually pay attention to: it drops us out of our habitual ways of being, out of our thinking – busy – minds, and into the present moment. This kind of awareness notices without judging. I try to step out of ‘good’ and ‘bad’, and just notice what’s here. That’s the question I keep coming back to, “What’s here? What’s here? What’s here?” If we can broaden our awareness in this way it can lead to wisdom and kindness. We
60
By Kaspa Thompson become curious about ourselves and the world. We discover that we feel a wider range of feelings than we usually give ourselves credit for, and – if Christmas Concert we keepMagic paying of attention without judgement – it gives space for those feelings to shift and change so that we don’t get stuck in any one place. Our experience of the world becomes both richer and more spacious. There is a strange move towards noticing just how much is going on – how many different processes are at play – and an increasing stillness of the mind that goes alongside that. The sky is full of grey clouds now. The slate tiles on the roof outside my window are damp with mist. When I shift my head a little I can see golden leaves swaying in the morning breeze. With that shift in posture I can feel some tension in my neck. Just noticing it seems to allow something to begin to relax. Can you take this article as an invitation to pause and give your awareness to something different? What are you paying attention to now? Can you pay attention to more subtle things?

The beloved rags-to-riches tale will be transformed into a spectacular musical extravaganza for all the family to enjoy!
