welcome Another busy year is almost behind us! Putting together this magazine is big job – talking to advertisers, gathering together articles and information, piecing the whole thing together before boxes of the finished magazines arrive for our delivery team to take from door to door. It’s a bit like a very complicated jigsaw puzzle! Altogether, it’s a lot of work for a lot of people, but we genuinely love what we do. As a small, independent, local company serving our community, we are proud of our magazine!

Local Talent:

the poor boys of worcester Who would have thought one of our local bands would be topping the bill at – of all things – a national ukulele festival?

By Dave Webber

s

ince they started three years ago, The Poor Boys of Worcester have been getting more and more gigs across the country. Their warm, foot-tapping sound comes from a skilful combination of ukulele, close harmony singing and a double bass played with some rockabilly rhythm and style. The band’s debut gig was three years ago on a dark November night at The Lamb and Flag on The Tything. The evening was filmed and can still be seen on Youtube! Looking just a little bit nervous, the Poor Boys struck up with ‘Hello Mary Lou’ as their first number and quickly got into the swing of things. From that moment on their following grew, first locally and now nationally. ‘Audiences appreciate our sound’ says Mick Morris who plays the double bass. ‘We mostly perform covers. Some of the popular ones include Call Me The Breeze by the JJ Cale Band. There’s also a great rockabilly number called Mobile Line and Railroad Bill.’ They’ve played festivals in Cheltenham, Norwich and Huddersfield, where they were invited back for more. ‘The first year in Huddersfield, we were so successful they booked us onto the Main Stage for the next festival’ laughs Mick. ‘We do get really positive responses from audiences, they often come up and shake our hands after a gig and that’s helped increase our following

online.’ Two of the band recently moved on and in their place is a new Poor Boy. Richard McKenna will sing and play the ukulele. ‘It might change our style a bit’ says Mick, ‘as we’re losing our harmonica player. We’ll start playing together with the new line up and see where it takes us.’ Alongside Mick and Richard, the line-up includes Dave Pygott, Tom Watson and Andy Tonkinson. They’ve just released a CD. Called Hard Luck Songs, it features 13 tracks including Sixteen Tons, Ooh La La, as well as a couple of tracks the band has become well-known for – La La Blues and My Bucket’s Got a Hole in it. When they played at the annual Ukulele Festival held in Cheltenham earlier in the year, the CDs were selling like hot cakes. After a gig in Northwick at the end of November, the band takes a break for the festive season before starting things up again in January. They They have an active Facebook page and lots of their performances can be viewed on Youtube. www.exuberanthealth.co.uk

All About...

wildgoose rural training Wildgoose Rural Training is a care farm based at Top Barn Farm just outside Hallow. They offer meaningful day opportunities for adults with learning difficulties and young people who may find the school environment a challenge. Jim Hidderley is the General Manager and tells us more.

Tell us what goes on at Wildgoose Rural Training? Our students undertake many activities associated with Agriculture, Horticulture, Animal Care, Woodworking, Cooking and Crafting. Many of our students find the family atmosphere and beautiful calm surrounding very conducive to their wellbeing. We have had many successes with our students and we have seen them go from strength to strength over a period of months and in some cases years.

Tell us about the different kinds of people you work with We work with adults who may find learning, in the standard way, a difficult concept. We also help young people who are not able to cope with the classroom environment to gain valid qualifications that will help them pursue a career or further education in the future. We can work with anyone who loves fresh air and open spaces. We also have a number of dedicated volunteers who support our staff and students, they are amazing people who give up their time so readily.

Do the activities change with the seasons? During the autumn we have been pressing apples to make cider and juice. In the summer months we are harvesting and preparing all sorts of fruit and vegetables to fill the freezers for the winter. Throughout the winter it is not unusual for there to be a warming soup on the stove or some cake to eat with a cup of tea. We love to work with the seasons and use what is abundant at different times of the year, this makes for a great learning experience.

Why is ‘rural’ training so effective, do you think? The Guardian recently ran a story about the benefits of working outdoors and how it helped to

16

improve the mental health of those who worked in a rural setting. I don’t believe that we are wired to work and learn in a concrete box with artificial lighting! Most students ‘get by’ in the school environment, I am sure we have all noticed how kids (and adults) come alive when they can run, play and engage in a practical way.

What are some of the highlights for you at Wildgoose Rural Training? We have highlights every day and I often say to people that ‘I have the best job in the world, I get to make smiles’. That is what I love to see here, when a student has made progress (in whatever small or great way) they are proud and smile. Recently we have acquired 42 acres of land to relocate the care farm and establish a Wildlife Reserve for the benefit of the local community and Worcestershire in general. Heritage Lottery Fund are supporting us with a development grant towards a new visitor centre and creation of a programme of activities linked to the new reserve. For more information you can find us on Facebook, Twitter and on the web at www.wildgooseruraltraining.org We can also be contacted on (01905) 620840 or enquiries@wgrt.org

RHINO GARAGE DOORS If your garage door has become hard to open or stopped working altogether, Rhino Garage Doors can help. The company fits new garage doors to whatever size or colour you require. ‘Typically, we are called out to look at doors that were fitted 20 or 30 years ago’ says Ross Perrie from the company. ‘Over that time, the doors have been subject to the ravages of time and the weather, resulting in stuck hinges or broken springs.’

After a visit to inspect the door, you’ll be given a free, no-obligation quotation and can decide whether you want to proceed. The work is carried out by fully-trained fitters and all new doors come with a warranty.

Rhino Garage Doors can even fit a remote-control, so your garage door opens at the press of a button on a keyfob. New doors can also be supplied in any colour you choose. ‘We use a powder-coated finish’ continues Ross, ‘so they’re maintenance-free. worcestershire parent and carers community In 2006 a small but passionate group of parents set up a new group for the families of children with a disability or additional needs. Here, they tell us more about their work.

m

y name is Audrey de Garis and I am a part time, joint co-ordinator at Worcestershire Parent and Carers` Community (WPCC). My work role is shared with Sue Evans our other co-ordinator. We have worked at the charity for nearly 6 years, three of those years as joint co-ordinators. We have a small team of three who, in total work 32 hours a week, although we do many more hours as volunteers. This role involves planning activities for our families, one to one support, attending meetings that will benefit our charity and our members, fundraising, and a hundred and one other jobs that it takes to run a small charity. The charity was founded in 2006 by a small but passionate group of parents who had a child with a disability or additional need as they had found that there was nothing in the Worcestershire area that supported them as a family. In 2008 they had registered with The Charity Commission and now over 11 years later we have around 220 families registered with us from across Worcestershire. Worcestershire Parent and Carers’ Community (WPCC) is a Worcestershire based charity providing support and resources to nearly 220 families throughout the county who have a child with a disability or additional needs. We provide family based short breaks and activity days, ensuring that families who have a child with additional needs are able to enjoy quality time together within their community, having new, exciting experiences, and creating lasting memories We also provide a network of support to parent carers including training and workshops in areas of interest and need, as well as coffee mornings

22

and 1:1 support. The average costs for providing these services and events is currently up to ÂŁ3,000 a month; this varies slightly depending on the events and the number of families that attend. We have a monthly youth group based in Pershore for any young person aged 14-19 with a disability. All of our events are based Worcestershire, we have been to many local venues where our children and parent carers make friends with other families that are experiencing many of the same issues. WPCC has an amazing fundraising team, many of whom are themselves parent carers. But as with any small charities, extra support is always welcome. To access any of our events or training you do need to be a member of WPCC. It is free to join, but there is a small charge for the family events. Our offices are based at Crossroads Care, Weir Lane, Worcester, WR2 4AY If you would like more information on either joining the fundraising team, organising a fundraising event for us or to become a member of WPCC please contact Audrey Mobile: 07955 688031 Email: wpccaud@gmail.com Office: 01905 748278 www.parentcarers.org.uk

Everyone is welcome to come along and browse amongst the many stalls, take refreshments or chance their luck on the raffle or tombola. On Wednesday 6th December this is followed by the annual Christmas Tea Party for the senior residents of the village held by the Community Committee. This is an event that is looked forward to by many people. They enjoy a lovely tea in the decorated Parish Hall as well as entertainment which is provided by Hallow schoolchildren and other local entertainers. They play games and catch up on all the local news. The lovely village green in the centre of Hallow will again see the community coming together to celebrate Christmas in two different ways. Firstly on Saturday 9th December at 6.30 p.m. Robert Latham the vicar of Hallow, will conduct the blessing of the illuminated Nativity crib and lead

the singing of favourite carols. A brass band will accompany the singers and the Star of Bethlehem will shine above. Mulled wine and mince pies will be served. Everyone is welcome, bring along your lanterns and don’t worry if its wet, gazebos are erected just in case! On the following Saturday, 16th December, Santa arrives on the Green in his musical, illuminated sleigh at 6pm. This provides great excitement for the children of Hallow as they gather to watch and listen as the large float travels through the village. They love climbing on board, during its hour long stay to speak to Santa and receive a small gift. New Year’s Eve is also celebrated in the Parish Hall, organised by the Community Group. This includes a professional disco and a ‘pooled savoury platter’ table, which means the committee members don’t have to spend hours in the kitchen!

Recipe

Meg's Quick and Easy Mincemeat Tart The festive season is racing up once again. With each year my culinary preparations take a more pragmatic approach and recipes like this are in the forefront of my mind when I am stocking my freezer and grocery cupboard. Ideal because it is quick, tasty and easy to personalise.

If you have been very organised you will have a stash of delicious homemade mincemeat on which to draw. If you have had your mind on other things (like most of us) then buying a good quality mincemeat and adding a few “twiddly bits”, a finely chopped fresh apple, a slosh of brandy, a handful of chopped almonds will transform your tart and make it individual. You can of course make a homemade puff pastry, rubbing butter into flour, bringing the pastry together, folding and layering it with more butter. Not difficult. But it’s Christmas and to cheat a little and keep a pack or two of ready-made puff pastry in the freezer makes sense to me. Just don’t forget to take it out in time to defrost.

Ingredients 500g Ready-made Puff Pastry 400g Jar of Mincemeat Fresh Apple / Brandy / Chopped Almonds … add to taste 1 Egg (beaten with a little cold water)

26

Line a baking sheet with baking paper.. Pre-heat the oven to 170˚C. Roll out the pastry to fit the rectangular or square shape of your baking sheet. Neaten the edges cutting a straight line with a sharp knife along a rolling pin. Score around the edge of the pastry about 2cm inside the edge of each side (like a picture frame). Move the pastry to the baking sheet. If you are making individual tartlets, just cut smaller squares. Spread the mincemeat with any additions you have made over the pastry base but keeping within the scored frame. Brush the egg wash over the pastry on the edge of the tart. You can use spare pastry to add lattice work, cut out stars, spots … don’t forget to brush these with egg wash too. Place in the hot oven and bake for 25-30 minutes until the pastry edge is well risen, golden brown and the mincemeat piping hot. Slide onto a serving plate or chopping board. Sprinkle with icing sugar and serve immediately with cold cream or good vanilla custard.

christmas tree for hire! Roots Family Farmshop in Rushwick has come up with a novel way to enjoy a traditional Christmas tree without throwing it away afterwards. Their Rent-a-Tree scheme means the tree has a life to look forward to once Christmas is over. Will Edmonds from the farmshop explains.

raditionally, the Norway Spruce is the tree of choice for Christmas in this country. It gives your home a wonderful pine scent although once cut off at the root they do begin to shed their needles.

a half feet tall and will fit into a car. The largest trees are up to eight feet tall and we can place a net around them to help with transport, or we offer a local drop off and pick up service for an extra charge.

Fortunately, there is a way to enjoy these trees without needle drop. By planting them in pots, they continue to live once you have them at home. As long as you water the tree regularly, you’ll have very few needles to pick out of your carpet after twelfth night!

Some people describe it as like having a pet to look after! They enjoy caring for it, topping it up with water and even seeing it grow by a couple of centimetres over the festive period.

Our trees grow slowly and steadily in their pots at our nursery, hooked up to a pipe system for regular watering. After they’ve enjoyed a growth spurt in the spring, we trim them into shape ready for December. Rental charges vary between £30 and £50 - after paying a £15 deposit you can take one home for Christmas. The smallest trees are about two and

All we ask is for you to return the trees to us by 10th January when we refund your deposit and place them back in the nursery for another year of growth. We’re currently experimenting with placing tags on the trees, so in future you can even ask for the same tree year after year. We have a scanner that works on sheep and we just need to fine tune the system to work on trees! If you prefer to buy rather than hire, we also sell small trees in pots which are easy to keep on at home and look after once Christmas is over.
