welcome Another busy year is almost behind us! Putting together this magazine is big job – talking to advertisers, gathering together articles and information, piecing the whole thing together before boxes of the finished magazines arrive for our delivery team to take from door to door. It’s a bit like a very complicated jigsaw puzzle! Altogether, it’s a lot of work for a lot of people, but we genuinely love what we do. As a small, independent, local company serving our community, we are proud of our magazine!

Advice
make 2018 the year you spread the risk By Independent Financial Advisor Rob Weale from Colwall hat a year 2017 has been, political and civil unrest around the globe, previously strong currencies plummeting on the world stage, inflation climbing at an alarming rate, interest rates starting to rise…yet markets here in the UK and the US have climbed to all-time highs….is 2018 the year the bubble bursts?
w
Hopefully not. The climate is still right for investing, frankly it always is. So long as the time horizon is sufficient, at least 5+ years, and diversification is employed as a matter of course, any storms that break out can be weathered and no knee-jerk reactions need be taken. Buy high, sell low, is never a good plan.
Investment funds
Asset Choice
Many financial advisers are still guilty, in a somewhat broad-brushed manner, of categorising their clients using three basic levels: ‘cautious’, ‘balanced’ or ‘aggressive’. However there are now many sophisticated risk profile questionnaires and online tools available to financial advisers to help measure your appetite for risk more precisely, and even your tolerance for loss. The more accurate your risk profile, the greater the chance of recommending the most suitable investments for your needs.
The single best way to protect your portfolio is to spread your risk across several different types of investment. There are many different assets in which you can invest, each with different risk characteristics. While the risks attributable to assets cannot be avoided, when managed collectively as part of a diversified portfolio, they can be diluted. Company specific risk Next, one of the best things you can do is to diversify within the assets. For example, you can spread your investments into different shares or bonds to ensure your portfolio is exposed to lots of different types of investments. Sector exposure It is just as important to spread your investments across different sectors. A sector is a grouping of funds with a similar investment objective and make up. By diversifying across sectors you can access shares with high growth and/or income expectations, without over-exposing your portfolio as a whole. Geographical Location It’s natural to feel more comfortable investing in your home market, but this is not necessarily the most sensible option. Because investments in different geographical economies generally operate in different economic cycles, they have less than perfect correlation.
6
Keeping track of lots of individual assets can be a daunting task. A much simpler solution is to buy investment funds containing those assets and leave the diversification worries to professional management. Risk profiling
Summary At Smith Weale Associates we are great believers in diversification at very stage of the investment process. If you have not explored true diversification before might I suggest you do it now and ensure you are prepared for whatever the future holds.
This information sets out the basics of risk and return when investing. It is not designed to be investment advice and should not be interpreted as such. Other factors will need to be taken into account before making an investment decision – Smith Weale Associates can help you with this.

“Recently at Halo we have seen a young person who’d managed to run his first 5k after three months off the cigarettes, a newly retired member who swam for the first time in 10 years, a woman celebrating her 40th and the loss of a stone, the father and son who’d reconnected over a love of badminton, the lone swimmer who’d found a buddy poolside to join for weekly yoga. We’re delighted by all the fabulous feedback about the facilities at the newly refurbished Ledbury Swimming Pool. The pool, sauna and steam rooms are a hit, the bigger gym and exercise studio have made room for more workouts per day and the changing facilities just make life easier. It makes the £2.3 million spent worth the effort! At this time of year we all combine celebrations with resolutions for the year ahead. If you need any help with both we’re the people to talk to. To find out more call 01432 842075 or visit haloleisure.org.uk Here’s to you and a happy and healthy new year!”

Feature
colwall orchard group the first decade
The time between Christmas and New Year can sometimes be a little bit boring. It can also be put to good use, like the time Colwall Orchard Group’s members came up with an idea for a wassail. With only a fortnight to organise, it was such a success its now a fixed part of village life. Helen Stace from the Orchard Group tells us more. he group began life in 2007 with only three members. We were set up to contribute to a national survey of noble chafer beetles and orchard, organised by the People’s Trust for Endangered Species. We discovered the village had 43 surviving orchards and that they weren’t in very good condition, so we decided to do something about it.
T
In our second year, we recruited more volunteers and trained them in how to manage orchard trees. We also started running events to encourage the rest of the village to enjoy and care about orchards. The first Blossom Picnic was really good fun, we made orchard themed batik artwork with the local primary school and of course there was the (by now almost legendary!) Colwall Wassail. Our first Wassail was awesome. On the day itself, a storm was due to sweep in at 6pm, just as the event started. The heavens opened, but 100 intrepid people gathered at The Yew Tree inn on Colwall Green, so we carried on with the wassail regardless of the storm! Undoubtedly the next highlight was obtaining land on which to create our own orchard, with the challenges being finding the land and finding the funding. We found a field off Old Church Road, with an old Apple Packing Shed, but disappointingly, the promise of Lottery funding fell through. Initially, we were quite despondent, then Tim said ‘Shall we see if people will lend us some money?’ We asked around and within three days nearly all the funding was in place. So, our success is a tribute to the village and shows the level of support we have enjoyed from local people.
24
Once we acquired the land, we had to fence it off and create new allotments, to rent to the Colwall Allotment Group. The orchard took four years to plant. There are 250 trees, plus 4 new hedges incorporating more fruit trees. Our volunteers planted the trees, but it was hard work - sometimes it was so wet, the holes we dug filled straight up with water. In places the ground was stony but we turned up some amazing finds, including part of an old plough and a stone tool from the middle Stone Age – the oldest human artefact ever found in Colwall. Our orchard has every kind of fruit; as well as apples and pears, there are greengages, plums, mirabelles, mulberry, damsons, walnuts, hazelnuts, chestnuts and almond, reflecting the diversity of fruiting trees and bushes around Colwall. Our next enterprise will be to restore the former orchard on our new land at Lugg’s Mill in Colwall. One part will be devoted to cherry trees and the other part to apples with which we can produce apple juice every autumn. Individual trees cost about £70 to buy and plant, so we are asking local people to help again by sponsoring a tree if you’d like further information then please visit www.colwallorchardgroup.org

Local Group
Tools for self reliance Malvern Hills Tools For Self Reliance is a group of local volunteers who refurbish tools that are then send abroad. From carpentry to car mechanics, tailoring, gardening and building, the tools directly benefit their recipients in six countries across Africa. Martin Blamire from the local group gives an update. A few months ago, this magazine featured a short article announcing the launch of Malvern Hills Tools For Self Reliance and calling for donations of unwanted tools for cleaning and sending to craftsmen and women in six countries in Africa. We had no idea what the response would be. I am delighted to report that we have had a fantastic local response, with over 30 generous people getting in touch to donate tools of all sorts: carpenter’s and mechanic’s tools, gardening tools and sewing machines. They arrived in all conditions: some rusty, some broken or missing parts, but we can usually refurbish them: KEEP THEM COMING! Key moments so far have been the moment when the Malvern Hills Trust offered us a workshop,
Lee Hankins Carpenter and General Builder Property Maintenance
the first phone call from a member of the public offering a donation and the day when two new volunteers joined our small team. To crown it all, we were visited recently by the Volunteer Support Officer from our parent charity. He took with him our first two crates, containing 120 refurbished tools plus a very valuable large bench vice and five sewing machines. These will be sorted and sent to projects in Malawi, Tanzania, Ghana, Sierra Leone, Uganda and Zambia. I can honestly say that there have been no major problems – except that we are already outgrowing our tiny workshop and will soon be needing larger premises. Any suggestions or offers, please? Thanks to Wendy, Mike, Margaret, Steve, Jeremy, Greenlink, David, Mary, Avril and all our many donors. Our parent charity is Tools for Self Reliance, you can read more at www.tfsr.org If you have unwanted tools to donate or want to join our friendly group of volunteers, please call (01684) 540491. Thanks.

Business News THE FOREST SEWING ROOM Whether its buttons, ribbons, cord, thread or fabrics you need, the Forest Sewing Room in Ledbury has something for every sewing need. Based in the Homend Shopping Mall, its run by Anita Davis who has run the business for the past six years. ‘As well as holding a stock of fabrics and haberdashery, we run regular sewing classes and sessions here’ she says. ‘One of our most popular ones is the Saturday morning Children’s Class, which is a lot of fun. We start with the basics, how to thread a sewing machine and wind a bobbin, before using the machine to sew a seam. It’s amazing how quickly the children progress and it’s a pleasure to watch them learn. They start to develop an understanding of how fabric works and how to use it, making everything from a pin cushion to bunting. The children are delighted by their creations and so are their parents!’ The Forest Sewing Room also hosts adult classes, helping everyone from the complete beginner to the more confident. ‘There’s something very satisfying about creating your own items’ continues Anita. ‘With clothing, it’s not

Garden Waste Collection Service SIGN UP NOW !
Convenient kerbside collections Wheeled bin for garden waste Saves on trips to the local tip Only £4.50 per month* *Excludes one off £15.00 start-up fee.
The Green Waste Club is a subscription-based garden waste collection service now available to Herefordshire residents. The service is operated and managed by refuse and recycling contractor Biffa.
greenwasteclub.co.uk 0800 0858 286 Powered by
The Green Waste Club Is Blooming! Wondering how to get rid of your garden waste, not least all that autumn leaf fall? Well, wonder no more – the Green Waste Club (GWC) can do it for you. Since July, this efficient, affordable garden waste collection service (the seventh established by waste contractor Biffa) has attracted hundreds of customers in Hereford, Ledbury, Leominster, Bromyard and Ross-on-Wye. As a result, over 50 tonnes of garden waste has been recycled so far. Its concept is simple and effective. In return for a modest subscription, each Club customer gets a 240 litre wheeled bin which can be filled with lawn clippings, prunings, leaves and leaf fall, small branches and other garden waste. Biffa’s experienced crew then collects and empties GWC wheeled bins into a dedicated 26 tonne recycling truck every fortnight (barring Christmas). All collected green waste is sent for recycling into compost at Rose Hill Recycling in Dymock.
Less Than A Fiver All the benefits of the GWC can cost less than £5 a month. A 12 month subscription costs an initial £69, comprising a one-off £15 charge for bin delivery and £54 for the year (if paying by direct debit) – that’s just £4.50 a month, or the cost of a couple of coffees! Got a larger garden or lawn? Get a second GWC wheeled bin to take care of it. And neighbours with small gardens can club together to share a subscription – that’s real value for money! Subscriptions can be paid by debit or credit card, and monthly or annually, with a direct debit arrangement offering best value. A 10% discount is offered for a 24 month subscription, with a 20% discount for 36 months. Other Club benefits include an informative website, a quarterly e-newsletter with occasional competitions, and discounts on gardening equipment. To join the Herefordshire Green Waste Club, or to find out more: telephone 0800 0858 286 or visit www.greenwasteclub.co.uk

All About...
LEADONITES BASKETBALL Dozens of young people enjoy weekly training sessions and matches with Leadonites Basketball. Training at Ledbury Leisure Centre, the club has grown quickly in the two years since it was formed. Matthew Chalkley is the club’s founder and tells us more.
How did the club start? My son had started playing for a team in Gloucester when they changed the training requirements that effectively excluded him from team selection. So, with my family’s help, I took the coaching award and I set up a club in Ledbury so that he could play matches again. We registered with Basketball England in April 2015, starting training in May 2017 and quickly grew to having three different age group training sessions per week.
Who plays and why? Anybody and everybody, but we seem to have picked up a lot of kids for whom traditional sports such as football and rugby didn’t seem to work out for them. But with time and effort they have advanced to the point where they represent the town with pride and passion. Their skill level and knowledge of the sport are now quite impressive; certainly many of them are very quick to help me with the rules when I referee them during end of training session scrimmage matches! Though the sport is not for all, many parents comment that the club has had a very positive effect upon their child’s life.
What’s a typical week at the club? We currently run four training session age groups from Under 12 through to Under 17s; though in reality many players train twice a week by also attending the next age group, up or down. The Cubs (U12s) and Seniors (U17s) train on Tuesday nights. The Juniors (U13s) and Inter (U15s) train on Thursday nights with an extra session on Wednesday night used as a more skills based session. Then we have teams playing matches most weekends with the U13s and U15s playing in the Birmingham based TBL and all other teams either playing friendlies or central venue tournaments where a team may play as many as four short duration matches in one day.
34
How do you rate the success of your teams? We play teams from much bigger places than Ledbury, including Bristol, Gloucester and the suburbs of Birmingham. Overall we lose more than we win, but for a small town we often punch above our weight. Last season’s Under 16s were our first team to have a winning season, beating the likes of Gloucester, Worcester and Newport. We have high hopes this season for our Under 15s, who are coached by Ian Robb, who comes with a good background in basketball; as opposed to my background which is mainly football.
Is there space for new players? We’re still on the lookout for more players for the U14s (year 9) and at the moment we’re on the lookout for Under 11 and Under 12 players. Being tall helps, being athletic is better, but best of all is being enthusiastic. If a new recruit is enthusiastic then they will want to learn and coaching them is much easier.
It costs £12 a month to train with us. Website: leadonitesbasketball.blogspot.co.uk Twitter: @LeadonitesBball

Local Event
Ledbury community choir There’s no better way to get yourself into the seasonal mood than at this December’s performances by Ledbury Community Choir! Titled ‘Our Favourite Christmas’, the concert runs over two evenings and features a host of popular seasonal music, sung in harmony across the choir’s Bass, Tenor, Alto and Soprano sections. ‘All the music has been chosen by choir members and local people in Ledbury’ explains Tina Jackson from the choir.’ We’ve received suggestions from all sorts of people, old and young, which means we’ve gathered together a beautiful and diverse selection of music.’ The programme includes firm favourites like ‘Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas’ to numbers like ‘The Christmas Candle’. The choir, with more than 80 active members, is known for its heart-warming performances, delivered with genuine feeling and occasional humour. ‘There’s usually a novelty song at the end’ continues Tina. ‘This year our Musical Director Mal Hughes has combined a number of songs from our repertoire
into a unique performance of The Twelve Days of Christmas – expect something a little different but very entertaining!’ The choir hosts three main performances every year as well as singing at other local events. They raise around £2,000 each year for charity. With their 20th anniversary year in 2018, they’re gearing up for a year of celebration and would love to see new members swell their numbers. There’s no audition, you can simply come along to one of the rehearsals and try it out. ‘Our Favourite Christmas’ is a concert of festive music for all the family, performed at The Market Theatre in Ledbury on Thursday 21st and Friday 22nd December, raising money for Salter’s Hill. Tickets are £10 each, available from Tessa on (01531) 634630 or Dee on (01531) 634105. www.ledburycommunitychoir.co.uk

Gardening
green fingers Down at Caves Folly Nursery in Colwall, Bridget has some planting tips for brightening up the winter and early spring garden.
As I write this there are still some leaves on the trees, their skeletal shapes gradually emerging in the autumn mists as winter approaches. Colours in the garden are probably appreciated more in winter than at any other time of year. The neutral colours of winter make an ideal background to the bright colours of stems, flowers and berries. Trees such as Betula utilis, Prunus serrula, Salix britzensis and Cornus alba Sibirica varieties all produce vivid coloured bark. For the best results and multi-stems make sure you prune the Cornus and Salix down to two or three buds from the base in March. Berries have the bonus of adding colour to the garden and providing much needed food for wildlife. Shrubs such as Ilex, Hedera, Callicarpa, Skimmia, Cotoneaster, Clerodendron, Euonymous (spindle berry), Pyracantha, Rose Geranium (hips), Viburnum Opulus and Gaultheria all provide a fabulous selection of vibrant berries through the winter months. Two of my favourite winter flowering shrubs are both scented and provide essential early food for pollinators. They are Mahonia Charity which
44
is evergreen with yellow flowers and Lonicera fragrantissima which is full of scent for most of the winter. The flowers are cream. Early spring bulbs such as Aconites, snowdrops and crocus will brighten up February. Many of these vibrant coloured stems, flowers and berries make excellent subjects for flower arrangements for Christmas and into the New Year. I always enjoy making wreaths or table decorations from plants in the garden. Plants such as Holly and Ivy make a good evergreen base for a wreath or table decoration. This can then by highlighted by variegated shrubs from the garden such as Euonymous, Holly, Lonicera and then finished off with some rose hips or berries and winter jasmine flowers. There is always plenty to do if you are a gardener from new projects to sorting out borders so get any disruptive landscaping done before the spring, order those new plants and seeds, and prepare for the new season! For now though, relax with a cup of good cheer and raise a glass to nature in all its glory! Happy Christmas and New Year.

Well Being
what are you paying attention to? Perhaps half your attention is on what you are doing right now, and the rest is worrying about something that may or may not happen in the future, or something that happened in the past that doesn’t sit well with you. If I pause for a moment and notice what my mind is doing, I can see that as well as anticipating the next sentence in this article, I’m also wondering how it will be received, and comparing it to a good piece of writing that I read earlier. It’s good to pause and pay attention to the things that we don’t usually notice. There’s some tension in my lower back. The act of noticing leads into a shift in posture without thinking about it. I can still feel the warmth of my cup of tea on the inside of my cheek. Noticing that warmth tunes me into temperature and I realise that my legs are a little chilly. Keeping my attention on my body, I become aware of some aches in my hand. Is that the result of too much typing (for which I use just a couple of fingers)? I catch the speculative thought. That’s the kind of place my mind usually goes to: thinking, thinking, thinking. Glancing through the window next to me I notice grey clouds moving across a white sky. I keep my focus there for a while. It takes about a minute for the clouds to pass from one side of the window to the other. They shift and change shape as they move, their wispy edges curling out and then back in on themselves. As I keep my attention there my mind settles and becomes quiet. This is the benefit of noticing the things we don’t usually pay attention to: it drops us out of our habitual ways of being, out of our thinking – busy – minds, and into the present moment. This kind of awareness notices without judging. I try to step out of ‘good’ and ‘bad’, and just notice what’s here. That’s the question I keep coming back to, “What’s here? What’s here? What’s here?” If we can broaden our awareness in this way it can lead to wisdom and kindness. We
48
By Kaspa Thompson become curious about ourselves and the world. We discover that we feel a wider range of feelings than we usually give ourselves credit for, and – if Christmas Concert we keepMagic paying of attention without judgement – it gives space for those feelings to shift and change so that we don’t get stuck in any one place. Our experience of the world becomes both richer and more spacious. There is a strange move towards noticing just how much is going on – how many different processes are at play – and an increasing stillness of the mind that goes alongside that. The sky is full of grey clouds now. The slate tiles on the roof outside my window are damp with mist. When I shift my head a little I can see golden leaves swaying in the morning breeze. With that shift in posture I can feel some tension in my neck. Just noticing it seems to allow something to begin to relax. Can you take this article as an invitation to pause and give your awareness to something different? What are you paying attention to now? Can you pay attention to more subtle things?

Trigger Point Pain in the Muscles As an osteopath many of one’s patients present with muscle pain of some sort. There are certainly many different types of muscle pain ranging from post exercise soreness through to spasm, muscle strain and viral myalga. It can even be seen as a side effect of medications such as statins. Some muscle pain defies explanation but is often attributed to trigger points which may be “active” or “latent” depending on whether they are causing pain or not.
lead to continual activation of certain parts of a muscle. The overworked area contracts and this limits the blood flow leading to lower oxygen levels and an accumulation of calcium ions. In turn the acidity within the contracted muscle increases and this leads to pain and further contraction such that a vicious cycle is established leading to ongoing problems.
What are the associations?
A number of common musculoskeletal problems are often associated with trigger points. These include: headache, jaw problems, neck pain, tennis elbow, shoulder pain and pelvic pain. Treatment of the trigger points may lead to an improvement in the associated problem.
What are trigger points?
There are specific diagnostic criteria for trigger point pain. The current definition is that a trigger point is the presence of a hyperirritable nodule within a taut band of skeletal muscle. The nodule will be tender to pressure and any pressure on it will produce pain in other areas (referred pain). Patients being treated often describe “knots” in their muscles.
What causes them?
There are several theories as to how trigger points develop. Overload and overuse are two key factors that
How are they treated?
Trigger points are usually treated with manual pressure such as deep specific massage and dry needling / acupuncture. Medically, local anaesthetic and corticosteroid injections are also used in some circumstances.
Orchard Lodge Clinic is privately run by David Jones, GOsC Registered Osteopath and associates. All treatments are drug-free and use techniques recommended by the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence. Initial consultation (with treatment) costs £45. Follow-up sessions £40.
