A great example is one of Malvern’s historic shop premises that is open for business once again. Malvern Goldsmiths has opened in the old pharmacy on Belle Vue Terrace. Built in 1851, it was a new branch of the Worcester pharmacy Lea and Perrins. Stepping through the fluted pillars at the entrance is like stepping back in time. Rodney Randle runs Malvern Goldsmiths and says as soon as he saw the shop, he knew what a beautiful jewellers it would make. It is worth a visit to see what he has on offer. Enjoy this lovely time of the year and have a Happy Easter.

Advice
Budget 2017: The Devil in the Detail By Independent Financial Advisor Rob Weale from Malvern
M
uch has been made of the Spring Budget delivered by the Right Honourable Philip Hammond - the hike in NI contributions for the self-employed which was swiftly reversed, the cut in tax-free dividend, the reduction in pension contributions post-drawdown. One of the least reported elements, buried deep in the budget documentation is the exponential hike in probate fees set to come this May. These fees are now to be classed as a ‘tax’ in the national accounts, some might say a ‘death-tax by stealth’? Under the current system families pay the government a set £215 fee, or £155 if they apply through a solicitor, to get legal authority to distribute the deceased’s estate, known as probate. However come May these fees are set to rocket to anywhere from £300 to £20,000 depending on the size of the estate being administered. The Numbers Under the new system, there will be no fee for estates under £50,000 which is a big improvement on the current £5,000 limit. After that it is £300 for estates worth up to £300,000; £1,000 for estates worth between £300,000 and £500,000; £4,000 for estates worth more than £500,000 and up to £1 million; £8,000 for estates worth more than £1m up to £1.6m; £12,000 for estates worth between £1.6m and £2m; and £20,000 for estates worth more than £2m. The Problem? ‘Where is the problem, surely it’s fairer?’ I hear some of you cry. 42% of estates are worth over £50,000 so there is an immediate hike of 40% in fees, but given house prices are at an all-time

high, investments are riding the crest of a wave and with pension freedom ramifications, many estates will suffer substantial increases. More to the point, these fees have to be paid up front. This means relatives could be left in a catch-22 situation where they do not have enough cash to pay the probate fees until they inherit the property, but they cannot sell it until probate has been paid. The Solution Some solicitors will pay the probate fees for you on account, however I think this is unlikely given the level of fees required and the time it takes for pay back. Another option is a short term loan but these are expensive, not everybody is eligible and they carry their own inherent risks. Finally, seek independent financial advice as part of a bigger review of your estate. As well as helping to mitigate inheritance tax, the use of life assurance and trusts can help mitigate the probate fee ‘tax’, thus ensuring your estate is administered smoothly and efficiently without delay and without causing extra pressures on those you were looking to benefit after you have gone. Death and tax cannot be avoided, but tax can be mitigated.

Business News CREATIVE SEWING Lisa Harford has been sewing for as long as she can remember, starting as a small child by watching her mother using a sewing machine. ‘It’s been a lifelong passion’ she says ‘and over the years I’ve repaired and altered countless items and garments.’ No job is too big or small for Lisa who will take on anything she thinks can be achieved. ‘I’ve recently altered some large feather cushions that needed reducing in size’ she says, ‘but equally I might repair a zip on a much loved item, take up a pair of trousers or make a pair of curtains.’ Lisa also carries out alterations to wedding dresses and remembers one job in particular. ‘A few years ago I altered the bridesmaids’ dresses for a wedding. They were convinced they couldn’t be improved but I managed it and they looked perfect on the day. They showered me with compliments!’ Based in Colwall, Lisa is happy to give either a fixed price quote for work, or an estimate for more complicated jobs that she always aims to bring in on budget. Cloudy2Clear Announce Trusted Trader Partnership Consumer champions Which? have now joined the thousands of customers who recognise that Cloudy2Clear Windows really are a business that you can TRUST. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has received the coveted ‘Which Trusted Trader’ status after going through a rigorous accreditation process entirely focussed on customer service. Group Managing Director Marcus McGee believes that Which? have endorsed Cloudy2Clear’s long standing company policy
of delivering the highest standards possible at all times. ‘Our service is simple. If your double glazing has misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 25 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps. Whilst a number of tradespeople perhaps don’t focus on customer care as much as they should do, we make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. Locally Cloudy2Clear service the Malvern, Malvern Wells, Welland
& Madresfield areas and manager Paul Papandreou agrees that this approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated as both my customers and, obviously a body as nationally important as Which? now recognise.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Paul a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

Well Being
crazy world The world is always changing. For some people the recent past has been a period of relative stability and prosperity. For some people life has always been a struggle. Whatever your experience, glancing at the news headlines shows us how difficult life is in many places around the world, and shows us that whilst difficult times can turn into good times, good times can also turn into difficult times.
By Kaspa Thompson Keep good company We are profoundly affected by the people we spend time with. We start to soak up their attitudes, their language and their way of being in the world. If we spend time with people who are interested in doing good things, then we start to become interested in doing good things. If we spend time with people who are hopeful, then we start to become more hopeful. Does this mean we should cut ourselves off completely from “negative influences? No. It means making sure we are part of a community which inspires and supports us so that we can go on to have supportive contact with all sorts of people. Spend some time alone We are social creatures, and contact with other people is vital. But as we move through all sorts of different interactions with others, we can become tired. Even good communities can be draining sometimes. Spending time on our own, doing something nourishing, allows us to re-enter life with others feeling energised and refreshed. Feed your mind Our bodies are affected by what we eat. If we eat good food, we feel lively and healthy. Our minds are affected by what we give our attention to. Notice how you feel after getting lost on Facebook, be curious about the hidden assumptions in the novel you are reading, or the TV programme you are watching. Give your attention to things that take you outside of your comfort zone, read things that leave you feeling more intelligent, or that make you feel good. Make a difference When we contribute to making other people feel
22
How can we retain our own sense of balance and stability in the midst of a world like this? better, or improving our communities, or the environment it feels good. It feels good because we are beings that enjoy meaningful activity and the most meaningful activity is that which lifts up others somehow. When we act for ourselves, it can feel good, but when we see our actions allowing other people, or the world, to flourish, it feels even better. The more we can allow ourselves to be motivated by good for ourselves and others, the better we will feel, and this is something that can keep building and building. Find balance Doing good in the world, making a difference and supporting others are all crucial ways of keeping ourselves feeling happy and grounded. And doing those things can also take us outside of our comfort zones and leave us feeling tired. We are ordinary people and we get worn out. We should make sure that we have elements of all the things I have talked about in our lives. Spend some time nourishing ourselves, and then go out into the world and spend some time nourishing others. Work out the right mix that works for you. Different people are different, but we all need some of each of these elements in our lives.

well dressing A record number of springs, spouts and troughs will be decorated this year as more people than ever get involved in this popular event. ‘The Tree of Life’ is the theme for this year’s festival which takes place over the early May bank holiday weekend. Run by Malvern Spa Association, well dressing around the hills has been running every year since 2000 and this year more than 45 sites will be celebrated with colourful displays. The theme was chosen to celebrate the life of Lionel Shorestone who single-handedly organised the event for eight years and who sadly passed away last year. There’s a new trophy for children’s entries called The Shorestone Trophy and Lionel will also be commemorated in a special token which can be found at each well, giving visitors plenty of fun as they search for them all. After dressing work takes place on Friday, the decorations remain in place for the following week. A judging team from Malvern Spa Association then tours all of the entries on the Saturday with the winners competing for gold, silver and bronze rosettes. Once again there will be a People’s Award which is an easy way to join in. Last year hundreds of votes were received via text and messages on facebook. Throughout the bank holiday weekend, there will be a plethora of activities including minibus trips and water blessings by different faith groups. This year also marks the 150 year anniversary of the death of Dr James Wilson MD, founder of Malvern’s water cure. Wilson’s Memorial on Abbey Road will be decorated to commemorate the anniversary.
26
This will be the sixth festival for Rick Banbury. Here he explains how he got involved and what he enjoys about it. “I got into this because a friend said ‘This is something you’d like to do’ and so the first year we dressed a bench under a chestnut tree in Great Malvern. After that I began dressing the Eye Well which is on the hills behind Holy Well. While some of the ladies make magnificent things I’m afraid I haven’t really got the hang of decorating. Previously I have made a willow lady and I did also create a display around an old wicker chair. Last year I hung an awful lot of ribbons on a line above the well which looked lovely when blowing in the wind. That’s the beauty of well dressing – whatever your skills you can have a go and do what you want. I haven’t got a clue what decorations to produce for my well at this year’s festival – I shall keep thinking and in the meantime I’ll buy some plywood and get my jig saw ready. What I love about the festival is that it’s a way to say ‘thank you’ to the hills. It enables us to say ‘thank you’ to this fabulous place we live in.” DATES Decorated wells can be viewed between Saturday 29th April to Thursday 4th May. All About...
hanley voices A celebration concert on Saturday 8th April marks the 25th anniversary of Hanley Voices. This local choir started under the leadership of Alan Johnston who was the Headteacher at Hanley Castle High School. Since then, it has performed countless times and helped to raise thousands of pounds for charity. Helen Astill joined the choir around ten years ago and sings in the alto section – here she tells us more.
How many members do you have? There are nearly seventy members of the choir, some of whom have been members since it formed. Ten of our members joined quite recently. We normally perform three or four times a year with our main concert in the spring, followed by a fun get together musical event for friends and family in the summer. We sometimes have another concert in the autumn and we also perform at Hanley Castle’s School Christmas service in December.
What have been some of the choir’s highlights? Over the last couple of years, we have done well at the new Upton Choir Festival for community choirs. In 2015 we won the Judge’s Cup and in 2016 we won the overall competition. We also recently held a workshop to learn how to sing in a jazz swing style in preparation for our next concert. More than a hundred people attended, many of them guests from other local choirs and it was great fun
What do you personally enjoy about being in the choir? I enjoy the challenge of performing some seemingly quite difficult pieces, but having fun at the same time. This is achieved though the guidance, patience and enthusiasm of our talented musical director Ben Sawyer.
What kind of music do you sing? Can anybody join? We are a community choir and welcome anyone who wants to sing - there are no auditions. Being able to read music is helpful, but not essential. Our repertoire ranges from the standard classical choral works like Fauré’s requiem to more
30
fun pieces, such as Alexander L’Estrange’s Zimbe and Ahoy! We’ve also performed songs from shows such as West Side Story and Les Misérables as well as other popular classics.
When can we hear you perform? Our next concert is on Saturday 8th April in Upton upon Severn’s Parish Church at 7.30 pm. We are singing Will Todd’s Mass in Blue. The Mass will be performed with special guest soprano soloist Joanna Forbes L’Estrange and Alexander L’Estrange’s ‘Call Me Al’ jazz Trio. We will also be singing some of Hanley Voices’ favourites from the last 25 years. Tickets are £10 each and can be purchased on the door or in advance by calling (01684) 592014. Hanley Voices rehearses at Hanley Castle High School on Wednesday evenings during term times from 6.30pm to 7.45 pm. If you are interested in finding out more, contact Suzanne Hirons on (01684) 593737 or by email, suzanne.hirons@virgin.net. You can read more at at www.hanleyvoices.org

Orchard Lodge Clinic Spinal and Musculo-skeletal Therapy In Malvern
David Jones Heather Else Stuart Wilson Registered Osteopaths with over 50 years experience between us
Topic of the month: Long term low back ache A common problem
Up to 80 % of the population will suffer low back pain during their lifetime. The majority of these cases are classed as acute and will resolve within a few weeks or so. However this still leaves a large number of people who are left with a long term problem. One famous sufferer is George Clooney who tore his dura mater (the tough fibrous covering of the brain and spinal cord) in an action sequence he was filming in 2005. The actor admits he has never made a full recovery.
The causes
A high percentage of low back pain is medically classed as “non-specific”. In other words no-one can be quite sure what the underlying cause is. However there are also many known causes of pain. These include disc injury, facet joint pain, muscle, tendon or ligament strain, spinal instability, nerve root irritation, occupational factors, referred pain from internal organs and poor posture to name but a few.
What can be done?
Medically many different treatments have been tried.
First line of attack includes medication ranging from anti-inflammatories through to anti convulsants, anti-depressants, muscle relaxants and even opiates. More invasive approaches include steroid injections into facet joints, nerve root blocks, epidurals and even surgery.
Our approach
Firstly proper diagnosis has to be considered. A full and thorough medical history and examination is essential. If so called “red flags” are present then further investigation is vital to eliminate any serious medical conditions. This may include MRI scanning, blood tests etc. Fortunately however, in the majority of cases this is not necessary. Most chronic low back pain will involve muscle tightening and loss of normal mobility. This needs assessing and then specific hands on work can be applied to restore normal muscle tone and joint function. Very shortened muscles may respond to intra-muscular acupuncture and weak areas of the spine may benefit from specific exercises. As ever prevention is better than cure so a run through of potential aggravating factors often pays dividends.
Orchard Lodge Clinic is privately run by David Jones, GOsC Registered Osteopath and associates. All treatments are drug-free and use techniques recommended by the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence. Initial consultation (with treatment) costs £45. Follow-up sessions £40.
For appointments and enquiries ring: 01684 568744 48 Church Road, Malvern Link, WR14 1NG Registered with BUPA and all major health insurers

Gardens
Hanley open gardens Hanley Swan is getting its gardens ready to welcome visitors to its gardens over the early May Bank Holiday weekend. Howard Hutchings helps to organise the Open Gardens weekend and tells us more.
w
e have seventeen gardens opening this year, with lots for visitors to see. You can simply turn up, buy your ticket at any of the gardens and then spend the rest of the day looking around. Tickets cost £6 and are valid over the entire weekend, so you can always come back for more! The gardens vary from small to large, pristine to wild, with the owners in attendance if you want to chat with them or perhaps be shown around. Preparing the garden can be a lot of work but it results in a lot of pleasure for ourselves as well as those who are visiting. May is a good time of year to hold the event and we usually welcome around a thousand visitors over three days. This will be the sixth year we’ve held the open gardens event in its current form. It’s a pretty
well-oiled machine, people know what’s expected when preparing their gardens for visitors and making them warmly welcome. We work hard on the catering and our volunteers prepare lunches and cream teas which contributes to us raising up to £6,000 for our local churches each year. There’s a photography competition for visitors to take part in and ‘Go Potty’ at St Gabriel’s Church is a chance for all visitors to vote for their favourite and most innovative pot-planting. Open Gardens at Hanley Swan takes place on Saturday 29th, Sunday 30th April and Monday 1st May between Midday and 5pm. Entry is £6 for all three days, with the money donated to local churches. Theatre News
waiting for god A comedy by Michael Aitkens Directed by David Grindley Starring Roy Hudd and Nichola McAuliffe Roy Hudd (The News Huddlines) and Nichola McAuliffe (Surgical Spirit) star in this premiere stage production of the BAFTA Best Comedy Series nominated Waiting For God, which delighted TV audiences across several BBC series in the 1990s. This all-new script is penned by the sitcom’s creator Michael Aitkens, and directed by Tony Award winner David Grindley. The cast of nine is led by Hudd and McAuliffe, brilliant performers who have each won best performance accolades in the prestigious Olivier Awards. All the favourite characters from the original series are reimagined for 2017, facing the challenges that come with growing old disgracefully in the era of the silver surfer. At Bayview Retirement Home, battle-axe extraordinaire Diana Trent conspires with new resident Tom Ballard to give the conniving manager his comeuppance through a hilarious conspiracy with unexpectedly heart-warming results. Waiting for God will be appearing at Malvern Theatres from Tuesday 30th May to Saturday 3rd June. Tickets are on sale at the Box Office 01684 892277 and online at: malvern-theatres.co.uk
