We work hard to find beautiful local scenes to feature on our front cover and this month’s picture was taken last year when the bluebells were at their best. It’s been a long hard winter and I think we’re all in need of some sunny spring weather which will bring out the best of nature! This edition of the magazine is packed with things to do and activities to try. The ever-popular well dressing festival returns at the start of May (Page 32) and at the same time there are other events going on in Great Malvern (Page 64). There are dozens more ideas here for things to do so carry on reading for some inspiration. Have a great start to Spring!

Advice

Equity release should be advised, never sold... By Independent Financial Advisor Rob Weale

L

et me be clear, equity release is an area of financial planning that should never be sold to a client, only ever recommended, and then only once all other avenues are explored and dismissed. An obvious statement you might say, however I am aware of firms which sell an equity release product without having either the qualifications or permissions to advise on the other aspects of financial planning, something only an independent financial advisor can do. The Process The first priority is to establish whether or not an equity release is actually suitable. Sometimes the property is not acceptable or the ages of the individuals does not meet lending criteria, sometimes, after careful consideration, it is a straight forward decision that this type of solution does not sit happily with those concerned. I encourage clients to have as many meetings as it takes to reach an informed position, with no pressure, no fees and no timescales, in order to ensure the next step is the right step. Alternative Options The alternatives must be considered, for example, do nothing, downsize, utilize pensions or investments, arrange an interest only mortgage, to name a few. I encourage the participation of other family members where appropriate and that all angles be explored, only then can you make an advancement to the product itself.

Independent advice Equity release products can be complicated and it is important one gets specific tailored advice from an independent specialist as everybody’s circumstances and needs differ. It is essential the advice you seek is independent and from the whole of the market, and only from firms regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority. Charges There are many different charges associated with arranging an equity release, none of which should be payable unless you go ahead, such as providers arrangement fee, valuation fee, legal fee, advice fee. I would encourage you to seek out a fixed fee solution for the advice aspect, not a percentage, as then you can be safe in the knowledge you have not been encouraged to take a bigger loan than you need. An advisor fee of between £500 and £600 should be more than enough to cover their time, anything higher, ask questions, and shop around. Get Informed Here at Smith Weale we have a supply of free impartial booklets to help you make an informed decision, if you would like to receive a copy please contact us.

The Products Equity Release can take on many different forms and within the product itself there are also other variants like lump sum payments, income payments, a drawdown facility giving ad-hoc payments. There are pros and cons to each and every type of equity release and the correct solution will only become apparent once all circumstances are considered.

MALVERN PARTY & BALLOONS Malvern Party and Balloons has a new owner. Phil Packer took over at the shop on Church Walk in February and says he’s been heartened by the response from customers. ‘Almost everybody coming through the door has said our shop is such a valuable resource’ says Phil, ‘and we’ve been given such a warm welcome!’ Phil had a career in IT before deciding to return to retail, where he started his working life. ‘My daughter had a serious illness, which was a moment I decided it was time to change direction. My wife’s family has run a successful dance shop in Worcester and we’re very excited to join the business community here in Malvern.’ The shop has a wide range of stock which includes fancy dress costume, make-up, birthday badges and banners, table dressings – in fact almost everything you’ll need if you’re planning a celebration. The shop is also a stockist of Qualatex balloons and if you’re planning a bigger event, they can create balloon arches and displays as well as indoor balloon drops. ‘Once I’d audited the stock, I was amazed at what we’ve got!’ laughs Phil. ‘We are truly a one-stop party shop and if there really is something we don’t have, we can normally source whatever it is you require.’ The shop on Church Walk is open from Monday to Saturday between 9.30am and 5.30pm. You can pop in for a chat or call on (01684) 566511. www.malvernpartyandballoons.co.uk

News PAINTING COURSES by CHRIS HUGHES

NEW PAINTING COURSES in MALVERN with Christopher Hughes

There are new painting courses starting in Malvern, organised by Chris Hughes. ‘I am arranging watercolour painting classes for beginners, improvers and competent painters at Malvern Cube. There will be lots of demonstrations to help with technique, composition, drawing and developing your own style. I have been teaching and painting professionally for over 30 years. My classes are relaxed, non-pressured and good value! As you will see on my website or at my gallery in Clusters at The Hop Pocket in Bishop’s Frome, I have a passion for watercolours. As well as the wonderful Malvern Hills and Worcestershire countryside, I have painted extensively in Greece and Tuscany. I have found by sketching regularly, not only does your drawing improve dramatically but you build confidence and importantly, speed.

The walk starts and ends at Malvern Cube, taking in The Priory and Malvern Theatres. There will be challenges to complete along the way, related to everyday tasks such as buying a cup of coffee.

that lie ahead, and my husband Tony will be with me so that he can help and support me to adapt our lives to overcome these challenges.’

Among the first people to sign up for the Malvern event was the Mayor of Malvern, Councillor Cynthia Palmer. ‘I was diagnosed with Macular Degeneration four years ago and I’m gradually losing my sight. I’ll be walking the Blindfold Mile so that I can experience some of the challenges

5 causes of pain in the hip region Pain in the groin, thigh and buttock can have many causes but here are some of the more common ones.

Pincer impingement in which the socket is overgrown such that the neck of the femur bumps into it. In both cases groin pain and stiffness can occur.

Osteoarthritis is the wear and tear type of arthritis. In the hip it commonly causes groin pain and pain down the front of the leg which becomes sharp on certain movements. Usually a thorough physical examination and history will reveal the tell tale signs and an old-fashioned X-ray will usually confirm the diagnosis. Some arthritic hips grumble on for years. Others go downhill fast and require replacement.

Acetabular labrum tear

Osteoarthritis

Trochanteric pain syndrome/bursitis

This pain normally runs down the outer side of the buttock and thigh but hip movement is relatively unrestricted. There is a fluid filled sac (bursa) which can become inflamed on the outer side of the thigh. However many of these cases are now thought to be caused by a dysfunction of one of the buttock muscles.

Hip impingement

This is where something interferes with the smooth working of the ball and socket. There are two types: Cam impingement in which the head of the femur is not round so cannot move properly in the socket and

The rim of the socket of the hip is lined with tough cartilage which can become torn leading to clicking and catching as the joint is moved. This is diagnosed more commonly since the advent of MRI scanning. Surgery is usually required.

Nerve irritation from the spine

Some pain around the hip may not actually be coming from the hip itself. The nerve roots in the lumbar spine may become irritated and give the sensation of pain in the groin, thigh and buttock. Usually a spinal examination will reveal problem areas that are associated with these specific nerves. Orchard Lodge is a good first port of call for any hip pain. Although not all of the above problems can be treated at our clinic, we will treat you where we can, or point you in the right direction to get a resolution when we can’t help. Please phone for an appointment or book online at theosteopaths.com

Orchard Lodge Clinic is privately run by David Jones, GOsC Registered Osteopath and associates. All treatments are drug-free and use techniques recommended by the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence. Initial consultation (with treatment) costs £45. Follow-up sessions £40.

well dressing Preparations are now underway for this year’s Malvern Well Dressing festival which begins on Saturday 5th May. Every year well dressers choose the festival theme and this year they have chosen to decorate their wells with the topical ‘Year of the Woman’ theme. ‘2018 marks the year that women were first given the vote’ says Emma Green who is one of the festival’s organisers. ‘It seems only fitting we remember this and other female achievements. I can’t wait to see the dressings it inspires.’ Now in its 18th year, the festival is run by the Malvern Spa Association and a committee of volunteers. Last year more than fifty sites were dressed. ‘We could decorate even more’ says Rick Banbury, Chair of the committee running the festival, ‘but we’re running short of accessible wells! Every year we welcome newcomers and we offer helpful tips and advice. Other individuals and groups return year after year and what’s lovely is they start to feel a real affinity and ownership of the water source they decorate.’ As in previous years, wells and springs are dressed on Friday 4th May and the decorations stay in place for the following week. A team of judges visits all entries and makes awards for the best decorations. The weekend sees lots of activities including water blessings from different faith groups and tours of the dressed springs and wells are organised. The Malvern Well Dressing Festival runs from Saturday 5th May until Thursday 10th May. You can find out more by visiting the Tourist Information office on Church Street. More details can also be found on the ‘Malvern Well Dressing’ Facebook page or by following the Twitter hashtag #malvernwelldressing.

SUE DAKIN, WELL DRESSER This is my fourth year and I have formed ‘Team Gaia’ together with friends to dress our well. This year we will be decorating Hayslad and we’re quite nervous! It’s a big space and it gets a lot of visitors. We already have our design and although we can’t give too much away, we hope it will be both weird and wonderful. I always view as many other wells as possible and love how we have one theme but so many different interpretations. One of our group is my sister in New Zealand. She does a lot of the knitting needed and sends it in the post. We have a certain style which is to use natural materials as much as possible. I do love it – it’s so creative and therapeutic. The festival is run by a really nice bunch of people and it brings the town together.

Recipe

Makes 1

soda bread

Ready in 50 minutes

Soda bread is really quick and easy to make. Bicarbonate of soda is used rather than yeast. Perfect with soup or delicious toasted for breakfast!

500g plain white flour/wholemeal flour mixed 1 tsp bicarbonate of soda 1 tsp salt 300ml ‘buttermilk’*

1. Preheat oven to gas 6/electric 200°C. 2. Place the dry ingredients into a large bowl; add the liquid. 3. Mix to make a rough sticky dough. 4. Tip dough out onto lightly floured work surface. 5. Shape the dough into a ball. 6. Dust the dough with flour and score a deep cross on the top with a bread knife. 7. Bake for 35 minutes, or until the bread is cooked through. When you tap the base it should sound hollow. Cool on a wire rack.

Ingredients

*Dairy free ‘buttermilk’ can be made by adding 4 tsp cider vinegar to 300ml soya milk. Stir and leave for 10 minutes before using.

For details of cookery classes and parties see www.ourlizzy.com or contact Lizzy on 01684 892 688. Lizzy also offers tailor made cookery sessions.

QUAKER PEACE GARDEN Have you ever visited the Quaker Peace Garden? Situated outside Malvern Cube, it greatly enhances the attractiveness of the site. But it is more than a pleasant garden; the Quaker dimension and the four-part symbolism it embodies lend it a deeper significance. Melanie Jameson tells us more. You enter the Garden by one of four quadrants; Peace, Truth, Simplicity and Equality. All lead to the centre and each segment is carefully planted to reflect its theme.

paths, some stop to sit quietly. June has been approached by bereaved people wishing to pay for a plant in memory of a loved one. It has even played host to a wedding party (see photo).

The Peace quadrant includes three Peace Roses, reaching up above the other plants. The pathway across this quadrant is broken and haphazard, just as the road to peace-making is fraught with obstacles and diversions. Unlike the path within the Truth section: this is straight and unbending; the planting is erect and distinct while strong colours speak of different truths.

This garden is for everyone to enjoy, so come and sit, think and enjoy the special ambience.

A simple path meandering path signifies Simplicity. Spring bulbs are first seen here. The Equality quadrant is planned as a celebration of opposites – different but equally valued. All will grow together as the garden matures. This wonderful vision and the regular work of caring for the Garden is thanks to June Baguley. She has revived a rather overgrown plot and re-imagined it in a way that has enhanced its original creation. It was originally designed for the 2010 Spring Garden Show by Matthew Jackman who had attended a Quaker school. He envisaged his garden as ‘a calm thought-provoking and focused space’ to reflect the atmosphere at a Quaker meeting. It was awarded a silver medal. Malvern Quakers decided to buy it and set it up in its present location. Over the years it has been adopted by the local community; passers-by wander along the

Well Being

out of control

Remember when it snowed in February? The temperature dived below zero. On the Wednesday evening of the cold weather the temperature inside the temple started to fall as well. Minutes before our public service I noticed the boiler had cut out. The condensate pipe was frozen solid. Whilst Satya led the service, I spent the evening trying to thaw out the pipe. My footsteps crunched on the frozen snow. The cold wind whipped up snow powder from drifts into the air around me. The hot water I was using to thaw the pipe created clouds and clouds of water vapour.

Sometimes that isn’t enough and the worry remains. Sometimes we see how little we are in control of and that in itself feels unsettling. What then?

Ten kettles of hot water later and the pipe was as frozen as it was before I had started. I made sure our residents had electric heaters in their rooms, and gave up for the night.

Count your blessings. It’s a cliché, but it really is a powerful antidote to worry and stressful Magic of Christmas Concert situations. This isn’t about ignoring what’s troubling you, but is about also connecting with what is supportive and good and wholesome.

The next day the plumber helped me unplug the pipe from the boiler, we drained the condensation into a bucket in the boiler room, and the heating came back.

I remember my friends. I remember the bounty of the natural world that sustains me. I remember Christine who left her house to our Trust in her will, which allowed us to buy this temple building.

Two of our neighbours were without running water.

We can go further than remembering our blessings and take action to reconnect with them. Talk to our friends, go out in to the natural world or the places that support us.

One of our outside wastepipes froze and a toilet overflowed. When the snow began to melt it found its way through the roof above our guest bathroom, dripped onto the floor, and water filled the light fitting. There is so much that we are not in control of. A few days later when everything had thawed out, the overflows had been mopped up, and we were all warm again, I felt my body relaxing. I hadn’t even known I was holding tension through the week. What supports us to feel settled and stable in the midst of chaos? One thing we can do is be clear about what we are actually in control of. Sometimes in times like this I ask myself, “What can I control, what can I influence, and what is completely outside of my control?” Being clear about what I can do often allows me to let go of worrying about the rest.

Think about what already supports and nourishes you, be grateful for those and ask how you can root yourself more deeply in those places, relationships and experiences. When we feel connected in this way, we are much less likely to be overwhelmed with stress, and much more likely to feel resourced and able to deal with what life throws at us.

Theatre News Sherlock Holmes:

the final curtain Could this be the final curtain for the world’s greatest detective? Sherlock Holmes lives in retirement on the South Coast. He keeps bees, occasionally casts his fly fishing rod, even plays his Stradivarius when the rheumatism allows. All too aware that he’s older and slower, he’s concerned that he might have lost his touch, paranoid that he is an easy target for his enemies: there have been so many over the years. He never truly believed Moriarty – his arch nemesis – died at the Reichenbach Falls. So when Mary Watson tracks him down to tell him she has seen her long-dead son, James, through the window of 221B Baker Street, apparently alive and well, Holmes is determined to solve the mystery and confront his own demons at the same time. Chilling, gripping and filled with unforeseen twists and revelations, this new thriller stars Robert Powell and Liza Goddard at Malvern Theatres from Monday 21st to Saturday 26th May. Tickets are on sale at the Box Office 01684 892277 and online at malvern-theatres.co.uk
